Harlem Globetrotters’ 12th Annual Holiday Tour Draws Large Crowd at Support Site By MC3 Luis R. Chavez Jr., Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Det. Europe

The Harlem Globetrotters performed a show for the military community at the Naples American High School Gymnasium on the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples Support Site during the team’s 12th Annual Holiday Tour, Dec. 11. The show featured special performances by the Harlem Globetrotters and an exhibition game against the International Elite team. The Globetrotters came away with the win. “It’s a true honor to be able to perform for the troops and their families,” said Eric “Hacksaw” Hall. “It’s a great feeling to be able to give back to them for the sacrifices they have made.” The Harlem Globetrotters held activities for the crowd to participate during the game and win memorabilia. One member from the crowd earned the chance to perform with the team. “I think it’s important for us to share our talent, entertain the troops and show our appreciation for the sacrifice you’ve made for us,” said Joyce “Sweet J” Ekworomadu, guard for the Harlem Globetrotters. “This is my first year with the Globetrotters and this tour is such a privilege to be able to put smiles on the faces of our troops and their families; especially all the children.” Kenyon, 7, son of Senior Chief Petty Officer Joel B. CNIC-Directed Facility Service Reductions

By Cmdr. Jay Driskell NSA Naples Executive Officer

It is an exciting time of year to be in Italy, especially as a member of the NSA Naples family. Relatives are visiting, and holiday parties with delicious food and beverages are found in abundance just about everywhere you look. Unfortunately the holidays are not without risk. Naples, as any major city, is not without its criminal element. Please remember to lock your doors and windows and turn on your alarms at night. When you leave your car, remove all your valuables, or anything that could be mistaken as valuable. If you must leave valuables in your car, make sure to keep them out of sight. Don’t let your holidays be interrupted by crime that could have possibly been prevented. The holidays also mean lots of travel. There are a wide range of things to see in the area, the light shows in Salerno, the beautiful coast of Sorrento, Rome decorated for the year’s end, and many other easily accessible sights. Remember to stay safe on the roads and to have an alternative if any alcohol is involved at your destination or departure. For those of you staying in the local area, be sure to check our PAO Notes and various events calendars around Support Site for our most up to date listings. Personally, I am looking forward to the free New Years party on top of the Capodichino East parking garage. Starting at 10 p.m. on the 31st and running until 1a.m. in the New Year. There will be a chili cook off and lots of hot beverages to enjoy while watching the fireworks erupt around the city. Please take note of the closings around both Capodichino and Support Site in the coming weeks. Not everything will be open during normal business hours so please plan accordingly for those last minute errands. Along those same lines, please work with the Commissary to order food for any large events you may be planning. There is a high demand for edibles, meats in particular, around the holidays and proper planning will ensure everyone’s needs are met. This week Capodichino was visited by Colonel Roger Donlon, U.S. Army retired and the first Medal of Honor recipient of the Vietnam War. It was an honor and privilege to hear the experiences and insightful perspective of his storied career. Colonel Donlon’s career is one we can all draw on for inspiration. I hope you all have safe Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Beginning in January, CNIC facility reductions will impact installation janitorial and grounds keeping services. These are CNO-approved service level reductions. For NSA Naples, sweeping, mopping and general cleaning of all spaces will be impacted. Deskside waste and recycling pick-up in administrative and operational areas will no longer be performed. This will require personnel to dispose of waste in central collection points. Restroom cleaning frequency will also be reduced. Reimbursable tenants are not impacted at this time. Additional details will be distributed when available through leadership and in future PAO Notes.

Holiday Email Scam Alert Scammers are taking advantage of the holiday shopping season with fake email shipping notifications that pose as FedEx, UPS or the United States Postal Service. An email will appear in your inbox that looks like tracking information for a package, but when opened will download a virus. Typically, these viruses phish for personal and banking information on your machine. This season, don't let these scams fool you into opening a virus on your computer.

Sojourner’s Permits Required for Holiday Travel Reminder from RLSO: check your sojourner permit to ensure that it is still valid for holiday travel. If not, come to Region Legal Service Office, Legal Assistance Department, at Capodichino on the 1st floor of Admin II. Legal Assistance must be notified at least one full week prior to anticipated travel in order to facilitate the process of providing you with a sojourner permit or a receipt that will allow your reentry into Italy. Please contact Legal Assistance with any questions at 081-568-4576.

The Neapolitan Presepe Christmas in Naples is very famous for its nativity scenes or presepe. Italians set up their presepe on the day of the Immaculate Conception celebration, Dec. 8. The one place in Naples that is a mustsee is the pedestrian street, via San Gregorio Armeno. It is located in the historic district of Napoli with hundreds of “botteghe artigianali” (artisan workshops) where artists produce handmade pastori or shepherds, most referring to the Nativity scene. Lately they also specialized in the reproduction of characters that represent politicians, cultural people, entertainers and other famous people in the world normally not included in the traditional presepe. On the same street, the Church of San Gregorio Armeno was built in 930 on the foundations of a classic temple dedicated to Ceres where the Naples population originally used to offer small votive clay figures made by local artisans. In 1208 the church was dedicated to San Gregorio Armeno. In 1223, St. Francis of Assisi represented the Nativity with a live scene and celebrated mass. The first sculptural representation of Italian Nativity scenes is from the late 1200s when it only included eight figures. The Neapolitan nativity scenes started mixing the sacred and profane in the late 1600s, and in the 1700s the making of the presepe in Naples became an art. At the beginning, the presepe was made to adorn the houses of the aristocracy and after-

wards became a widespread tradition. The most famous Nativity scene is located at the Museo Nazionale di San Martino in Naples. The Presepe Cuciniello includes over 160 characters, 80 animals, 28 angels and over 400 miniature objects and it was created between 1887 and 1889.

St. January’s Blood Liquefies The blood of St. January liquefied Dec. 16, at 5:45 p.m. after 8 hours of prayers. It is the last known occurrence of the miracle of the patron saint of Naples. The first occurrence was on Dec. 16, 1631 when a terrible eruption of Mount Vesuvius, after having destroyed the town of Torre del Greco, threatened the city of Naples. The lava was about to enter the city when Neapolitans appealed to their patron saint with a procession of the saint’s bust. The blood liquefied and the lava stopped before entering the city.

Sphinx Head Returned to Naples The head of the sphinx that decorated the statue of the Nile in Naples was found after more than 50 years in Austria. The head of the marble statue mysteriously disappeared at night in the mid-50s. The head is a few centimeters high and weighs no more than six pounds. The buyer, who lives in Austria, didn’t hesitate to give it back to the Carabinieri military police for the Protection of

Cultural Heritage in Naples. The entire block of marble was carved almost 2,000 years ago, most likely by an Egyptian artist, who arrived in the Greek-Roman city of Neapolis. The statue will be restored with funds raised by citizens and visitors who buy two or five euro postcards sold at the many shops in the historic center of Naples.

Jail for Veneto Thief An Italian man was sentenced to five months and ten days in jail for stealing hundreds of euros from church collection boxes in a village located in the Veneto region. He was caught red-handed after he made the sign of the cross, lit candles, and measuring stick wrapped in tape to fish money out of the charity box. Police had been staking out the church for days after surveillance footage caught the man, in November and earlier in December, stealing hundreds of euros aiming to help the poor.

Holocaust Survivor’s Saviors Awarded During World War II an Italian couple from the town of Anghiari, in Tuscany, risked their lives to hide four members of a German-Jewish family in their apartment for two years. The couple received the Righteous Among Nations award. The Holocaust survivor who now lives in a kibbutz north of Tel Aviv nominated the couple for the award.

Naples Sailor Chosen as chapel hosts christmas cantata Region Sailor of the Year By MCC Travis Simmons, NSA Naples Public Affairs

Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Chanieta Bradley, assigned to U.S. Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, was selected as the Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia’s (EURAFSWA) 2013 Sailor by the Year (SOY). Rear Adm. Jack Scorby, commander EURAFSWA, announced the selection, Nov. 26. Scorby said all the nominees are performing well above standards, are recognized experts in their ratings and are inspiring leaders, motivators and trainers in their commands; they are the future chief (Official U.S. Navy photo) petty officers and officers of our Navy. Bradley competed against Master-at-Arms 1st Class (EXW) Rex Boblett from NSA Souda Bay, Greece, Masterat-Arms 1st Class (SW) Calvin Lambrix of NSA Bahrain, Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class (SW) Thania Lopez of Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, and Navy Counselor 1st Class (SW) Marblanch Giardini from Naval Station Rota, Spain. “I think what helped me the most was the driving force behind me; I have a wonderful team that grooms me and who believes in me,” said Bradley. “When all else dwindles away, I think the passion to make a difference perseveres and I'd like to believe the members saw that in me.” This year’s competition was held through a video teleconference that gave each board member an opportunity to interact with the nominees for as long as they needed. Each Sailor was able to provide insight into their career while introducing themselves. Bradley said she didn’t feel as scrutinized or intimidated as other boards she’s participated in and felt board members were able to focus more on her answers and thought process through the teleconference. “Each and everyone preformed superbly, however Petty Officer Bradley stood out as a dedicated leader of Sailors and as a cornerstone of the Naples Area First Class Petty Officers Association,” said EURAFSWA Command Master Chief Petty Officer (SW/AW) Richard Hatton, SOY board chairman. “In addition to leadership and mentorship of Sailors on the deckplate, the board looked at each Sailor's involvement in the CPO 365 Program.” Bradley will now represent EURAFSWA for Commander, Navy Installation Command SOY competition. “This means I can be that positive and living proof to any and every young Sailor who believes their hard work is for nothing,” said Bradley. “This selection means that I can share the tools that have been given to me and promote growth and prosperity to all that I cross paths with.”

Il Coro Polifonico performed more than a dozen songs for community members at the Support Site chapel, Dec. 14. The choir was formed 19 years ago by Annibale Messore and has performed several concerts at St. Peter's Basilica and the Abbey of Montecassino, including the celebration of Vespers for Pope Benedict XVI. Maria Grazia Messore, the choir's musical director, allowed time between each song for a brief description and some of its history. (Photo by MCC Travis Simmons)

A Christmas Trip to Sorrento

Shoppers stop to chat or have coffee in Sorrento’s Piazza Tasso on a Saturday night. During the holiday season, concerts and special events are regularly held in the piazza. For a list of special events, visit www.milluminodinverno.it/en/.

Summer resort town lights up for the holidays Story and photos by Melissa Kabukuru

If snow and evergreens don’t sound like your idea of Christmas fun this year, try traveling to a land of citrus and palm trees instead. The southern Italian town of Sorrento, about a 75 minute drive south of Naples, takes on a new character in December and

January, with festive lights and Christmas shoppers replacing the crowds of foreign tourists that swarm the city in summer. A stately Christmas tree rises in the city’s main square, Piazza Tasso, during this time of year, while garlands hang above the city streets. Even the palm trees and orange trees are decked with lights.

Stores get in the spirit as well, placing snow globes and ornaments in their windows along with chocolate Santa figurines and Christmas pastries. As night falls in the city, it begins to fill up with shoppers. Stop for an espresso or a cioccolata calda at one of the bars in Piazza Tasso at twilight and watch Italian families stroll from shop to shop. By the time you’ve finished your drink, you’ll have all sorts of new ideas for winter accessories to buy. Then, head down Corso Italia to admire the pastries in the windows

of the pasticcerie. I couldn’t help buying a bag of roccocò, nutty Neapolitan Christmas cookies shaped like donuts. If those aren’t to your taste, there are always struffoli, the plates of fried doughballs mixed with honey and small candies; or raffioli, sponge-cake desserts filled with a layer of ricotta cream and chocolate chips, then covered with a sugar glaze. As you walk, you’ll notice more people glancing inside windows than actually entering stores or carrying shopping bags. Feel free to do the same — Sorrento’s temperate climate makes perpetual window shopping fun even in winter. If you’re staying the night — which isn’t a bad idea given Sorrento’s low winter rates — find a trattoria after the shops close and warm up with a plate of gnocchi alla sorrentina, a traditional Sorrentine dish. The baked, cheesy potato gnocchi in tomato sauce will keep you warm as the evening chill sets in. If Sorrento’s gnocchi aren’t your favorite, note that in winter the city’s culinary offerings vary from those in summer. Many restaurants

I passed were serving dishes with beans (fagioli), walnuts (noci) and even boar (cinghiale). My travel companion’s risotto con noci e provola (risotto with walnuts and cheese) at one restaurant was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. Throughout the holiday season, concerts take place in Piazza Tasso and in many churches in Sorrento, while museums offer free admission on weekends. Several special events are scheduled for Christmas Eve, the day after Christmas and New Year’s Eve; visit www.milluminodinverno. it/en/ for a complete schedule. Though the city is buzzing with activity this time of year, it seems like a different Sorrento from the one that greets visitors in summer. The mood, while lively, is more tranquil than during the summer rush: you won’t find yourself fighting with other tourists for the attention of a Limoncello vendor. Since the Christmas season in Italy continues through the Epiphany on Jan. 6, you can enjoy the holiday atmosphere in Sorrento even after Christmas and New Year’s Day have come and gone.

Getting there Sorrento can be reached either by train, using the Circumvesuviana line that connects to Naples’ Stazione Centrale, or by car. If you’re driving, take the A3 autostrada toward Salerno and then exit at Castellamare di Stabia. Then follow the signs for the Penisola Sorrentina/ Costiera Amalfitana to merge onto the SS145. Continue to follow the SS145 into town, following the signs for Sorrento or Sorrento centro. Traffic can get heavy entering the town in the evenings this time of year, so you may want to arrive earlier in the day to beat the crowds on the road. For more information about events in Sorrento during the holidays, visit www.milluminodinverno.it/en/.

Chioma “Chi Chi” Adaku-Griffin and her Chi Chi Peture luxury dog boutique, an entity of Chilebrity Pets LLC, launched her first international pet fashion exhibition this fall at the Foof musem in Mondragone, Italy. Chi Chi’s designs captured the attention of Gino Pellegrino, Foof museum director, when she took a tour of various design houses and pet-related venues in Europe. She designed and produced a dog wedding gown that was exhibited at Foof along side other European designers such as CoCo Channel, Louis Vutton and BerBerry. “The pet apparel and accessories indus-

try has increased and is seen more of a lifestyle for pets than a product being distributed,” said Chi Chi. In spite of the ongoing recession, global sales of pet products continue to increase with worldwide spending reaching $81 billion. As more consumers consider their pets family members, they continue to spend more on discretionary purchases such as treats, clothing and high-tech gadgets. “Consumers place considerable value on the companionship that pets can provide, but there is also a lifestyle trend that has developed for pets with really lovely accessories like leather bow and dress ties, casual clothing, sports wear, collars, leads

or bowls in fashionable colors,” she said. Chi Chi is a military spouse and during her time in Naples has worked to support home businesses. She founded the MarketPlayce where spouses can display their arts, crafts and businesses. She spent time as the vice president of the Naples Overseas Support Club and managed their Thrift Store on Support Site. Chi Chi also became coordinator for the Blue Star Families in Naples, a foundation offering valuable wellness, morale, education, and employment programming for military families. Chi Chi and her designs can occasionally be seen set up outside the Navy Exhange on Support Site.

Geoff Pollitt's attempt to enter the American PX led to a meeting with a Major General (Photo Courtesy of Geoff Pollitt)

The Tale of the Brit’s Snail Mail George A. Smith

A 78-year-old British man felt so passionately about the American military that he wrote down his thoughts in a five-page, single spaced letter, guessed at an address, stuck it in the mail and wondered if anyone would read it. Two months later, someone did. But only after the bulky letter with the vague address was opened by customs, examined, put into a plastic bag, forwarded, then forwarded again to the American Forces Network Europe (AFN) Headquarters in Ramstein, Germany. Geoff Pollitt’s carefully penned letter had one-cross out, no misspellings and seven neatly trimmed copies of photos. While Pollitt has an email account, he decided to write because his one-finger computer “pecking” wasn’t fast enough. As a ten-year-old boy Pollitt recalls saluting American GI’s leaving for World War II’s Day-day landing. “I remember my teacher telling me some of the brave lads would be killed, leaving little boys like me in the States without a dad,” said Pollitt. “Afterward, I went home and cried.” It was weighty stuff for a small boy. Years later, around 1950, Pollitt renewed his connection with the United States when he started pushing the side of his face against the speaker of his dad’s radio with a cushion over his other ear to keep out stray sounds. He was tuning in a faint AFN radio signal drifting over the English Channel from Germany. “I liked listening to country,” said Pollitt. “I really liked Hank Williams’ ‘Lovesick Blues.’ I started mimicking his yodeling at school. They all thought I was crazy!” When he turned 16, Pollitt set up a pirate radio station in his bedroom using walkietalkies connected to a recordplayer. The signal went two

miles. “My call sign was the Golden Rocket,” Pollitt said. “I played Hank Williams and Tennessee Ernie Ford records and I spoke with an American accent!” Pollitt joined the British Army of the Rhine when he was 18. He was stationed in Northern Germany. “Back then nobody listened to the BBC,” he said. “Nearly all of our radios were permanently tuned to AFN. We didn’t turn the radio off when we went to bed. AFN would sign off the air at midnight, but around six the carrier signal woke us up, followed by the Stars and Stripes national anthem.” Around that time, Pollitt had a small encounter that made a big impact. “My buddies and I wanted to go to the Frankfurt PX, but it was forbidden. Someone sent us to the U.S. Army Headquarters,” Pollitt said. “We thought we were in big trouble when we were escorted in to see a Major General. But he talked to us, then after a while called in a girl, and told us to follow her and she would get us PX passes. He shook our hands and wished us well. We could not believe a Major General would give us the time of day like that!” Pollitt left the British Army

and returned to life back in England, but his U.S. connection continued in a surprising way. After his father died, Pollitt’s family researched and discovered that Pollitt’s grandfather fought for the Union Army in the U.S. Civil War as a private with the 33rd Infantry Regiment of Pennsylvania. After the war, Pollitt’s grandfather owned and operated a cotton mill in Pennsylvania before immigrating to England in 1887. Pollitt believes his father never told him his grandfather was American because when his grandfather died in Southport, England, in 1915, he left a considerable amount of money, but none of it went to his dad or mother. Today, Pollitt lives in Bolton England, happy to hear his wayward letter eventually found its way to the U.S. military. The two-month journey of his penned thoughts started after he read an article on a U.S. military Web site about the American military’s impact on European culture. Pollitt said it “brought a lump to my throat and a great nostalgia.” Now, his shared experiences are part of the story. A tale of how Americans repeatedly impacted the 78-year life of Geoff Pollitt.

Except for those living at the Support Site and Capodichino, bottled water is recommended. Treated water is provided free of charge at a dispenser located outside the Capodichino east parking garage. All economy leases negotiated through the Housing office have a bottle water clause, which requires the landlord to provide bottled water. Work with landlords to have any water holding tanks disinfected twice a year and ensure your tap water is disconnected from non-permitted wells and connected only to the city water system.

Naples Toastmasters Opens Doors for Members By Michael Maddox

Toastmasters teaches speaking, communication, and leadership, which are valuable skills for work and community service. Toastmaster clubs can be found worldwide, and one is here in Naples. New club members learn the fundamentals of speaking by completing ten projects from the manual, Competent Communication. They cover topics including speech organization, body language, vocal variety, inspiration and others. As a Toastmaster progresses through the manual and writes, pracJanet Murdoch speaks during a club meet- tices and delivers ing. (Photo courtesy of Naples Toastmasters) speeches, they inevitably improve. Yasandra Brown founded the Naples Toastmasters club and she’s been teaching speechmaking ever since. Brown, who teaches math and reading to fifth and sixth graders at Naples Elementary School, became involved in Toastmasters while she was in Germany. She regularly speaks at military spouse clubs, churches, and volunteer groups about the art of speaking. “What I learned in Toastmasters has enabled me to connect with others and to teach them speaking, and it also set me up for my second job,” said Brown, who intends on being a motivational speaker after she retires from teaching. Toastmasters also learn leadership through the roles and responsibilities they fill at meetings and by completing the manual. The manual focuses on essential leadership skills like listening, goal setting, critical thinking, how to give feedback, time management, planning and implementation, organization and delegation, facilitation, motivation, mentoring, and team building. John Lepkowicz could hardly be in front of a group of people last year because he was so nervous. He worked hard on his speeches and stood up in front of the Naples Toastmasters again and again. His speeches steadily improved. Lepkowicz earned his “Competent Communication” award this year after having completed his first ten speeches. He is now progressing through advanced-level manuals and was elected president of the 20132014 Naples Toastmasters club. He’s gone from barely being able to stand up in front of the group to leading them. Another founding member of the Naples club, David Carson, spoke about how it has helped in his job of speaking with high-ranking individuals. “Toastmasters has made me a more confident person; not only when it comes to public speaking, but also in my everyday dealings with individuals,” said Carson. “Before I joined Toastmasters, I was nervous, shy, and quite frankly, I would shake whenever I would get up to speak in front of more than two people. After joining Toastmasters, and successfully preparing and reciting speeches, I became a more confident speaker in both my voice and my stature.” Wherever you go, speaking clearly, thinking clearly, and communicating effectively is in high demand. Toastmasters is a terrific venue to learn and practice communication skills. “I'm more confident in my everyday life thanks to the tools I learned in Toastmasters,” said Carson. “People notice confidence by the way you walk, and of course by the way you talk. Toastmasters can help you obtain that confidence.” The Naples Toastmasters club meets the first and third Tuesdays of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Support Site Community Center.

Navy Beats Army 34-7, Longest Winning Streak By Jessica Clark, U.S. Naval Academy Public Affairs

The U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen beat West Point's Black Knights, 34-7, at the 114th Army-Navy football game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia Dec. 14. The Navy football team's win provided its twelfth-straight victory against the Army squad in the annual contest and gained Navy the Commander-in-Chief trophy for the second-straight year. Navy has won the trophy nine times in the last 11 years. The trophy is awarded to the service academy with the most victories in games between the three service academies: Navy, Army and Air Force. Navy's 12-year winning streak is the longest in the history of the rivalry between Navy and Army, which began in 1890. They lead the series 58-49-7. Navy was the first on the scoreboard with a field goal in the first quarter, bringing the score to 3-0. With 8:15 left in the second quarter, Navy's Noah Copeland made a 39-yard run for the first touchdown of the

game, bringing the score to 100. This was a career-long run for Copeland. Still in the 2nd quarter, Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds, of Antioch, Tenn., ran 47 yards for another touchdown against Army. The extra point left the game at 17-0 at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, West Point cadet Angel Santiago put Army on the scoreboard with a touchdown plus the extra point, leaving the score at 17-7. Navy quickly answered back with a 34-yard field goal, extending its lead to 20-7 with just over a minute left in the quarter. Early in the 4th quarter, Navy's Reynolds made his 28th rushing touchdown this season, breaking the NCAA single-season record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, formerly shared by Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein and former midshipman quarterback Ricky Dobbs. With the score at 28-7 after the two-point conversion, and wintry weather getting increasingly worse, Navy finished with Reynolds' third rushing touchdown and 29th

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Contact Connie Henderson, RLSO EURAFSWA liaison advisor, at 081-568-4639 for more information.

Naples Wrestlers Give Back to Community From Naples High School Coaching Staff

The Naples High School wrestling team picked up trash and cleaned the dumpster areas, Dec. 10, in an effort to give back to the Support Site community that supports the team. “Cleaning up the Support Site was the least we could do,” said Vito Vitulli, wrestling coach. “It was a nice way to give back to the community that does so much for us. It was wonderful to do this around the holiday season. Many of our parent volunteers live on the Support Site.” A focus of this year’s Wildcat wrestling team is to give back to the community. The team is privileged to benefit from the military community and wanted to share their admiration by holding a small cleanup project. “Part of being a citizen in any community is active involvement,” said Duane Werner, school principal. “It is extremely gratifying to see our future citizens become involved in our community in a project such as this.” The wrestling team is worthy of recognition for their athletic accomplishments, but it was their work off the mat that gained them a little respect. “The Booster Club, NOSC, PTSA, and the community at large volunteer their time all too often for our benefit,” said Luca “Big Claws” Melendez, wrestling team captain. “This was a small token of our appreciation.”

U.S. Naval Academy 2014 Summer STEM Program Looking for Students By Lt. Teng K. Ooi, U.S. Naval Academy

Each year in June, the United States Naval Academy launches a Summer Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Program to expose young people to STEM concepts and technologies. The 2014 Summer STEM Program is designed to encourage 8th11th graders to pursue a course of study in STEM-related subjects throughout high school, college, and beyond. The aim is to integrate STEM-focused concepts across the curriculum and pave the way for students to succeed academically in mathematics and science and help put them on a path towards successful STEM careers. An effective and practical way to stimulate student interest in STEM is to show how mathematics and science are applied to create exciting technologies. The 2014 STEM program will showcase the latest in technological advances in a wide variety of science and engineering topics to include energy and light, infrastructure, transportation, cybersecurity, environmental challenges, flight and fluids, automation, simulation and modeling, biometrics and robotics. Students are able to participate in project-based modules using a hands-on, real-world approach to solving design and analysis problems in the Naval Academy’s world-class laboratory facilities. This unique learning environment promotes engineering “habits of mind” such as systems thinking, optimization, innovation, creativity, and team work. It exposes students to a problem-based environment, outside the traditional classroom. The tuition to attend a session is $350. Scholarships are available based on financial need. Each student will be responsible for arranging transportation to and from the Naval Academy. Buses and midshipmen escorts will be on hand to transport students to and from BWI and the Naval Academy. Applications open Jan. 6, 2014 at www.usna.edu/admissions/stem for 2014 session dates: June 2 - June 7, for rising 8th & 9th graders; June 9 - June 14, for rising 10th graders; June 16 - June 20, for rising 11th graders.

A Guide to Naples’ Dolci Natalizi Story and photos by Melissa Kabukuru

This time of year, every pastry shop in the Naples area has stocked its shelves with the region’s typical Christmas sweets, called dolci natalizi. If you’re unfamiliar with traditional Neapolitan pastries, the array of options can be confusing, especially since the offerings at your local pasticceria will change from season to season. Here’s a guide to the most common Neapolitan Christmas pastries and biscotti that you will see when you walk into a pastry shop this time of year.

PASTE DI MANDORLE (PAHS-tay dee MAN-dor-lay) These sweets, made of almond paste and sugar glaze, are carefully shaped and painted to look like real fruit. They also are known as pasta reale, a name that dates back to the era of the Bourbon King Ferdinand IV of Naples. It is said that the king visited nuns at the convent of San Gregorio Armeno in Naples and was presented with a sumptuous feast of fruits, lobster and fish. When he declined to eat, saying that he had recently had lunch, the nuns urged him to have a taste. When he did, he was surprised to realize that the entire feast consisted of sweets that were sculpted and painted by hand. Outside of Naples, Sicily is also famous for making these desserts.

ROCCOCÒ (Roh-coh-COH) RAFFIOLI (raf-FYO-lee)

These round-shaped cookies look like donuts, but they have a much different texture: they’re normally hard rather than soft. The dough is spiced with nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon, and includes chopped almonds. They have a distinctively nutty flavor.

The base of this dessert is pan di Spagna, a type of sponge cake. The cake is then covered in a white sugar glaze to form the simplest version of the dessert, raffioli semplici, which are essentially oval-shaped cookies. Other versions, called raffioli a cassata or raffioli ripieni, include a layer of ricotta cream with chocolate chips, and often are topped with a layer of green pistachio paste or dried fruit.

PANETTONE (pah-nay-TON-ay)

PASTIERA (pahs-tee-AY-rah) Though this Neapolitan pastry is eaten most often at Easter, you’ll see it lining the shelves of your favorite pasticceria around Christmas as well. It is essentially a pie filled with a soft mixture of cooked grain, ricotta cheese and candied citrus. If you go to buy one, you’ll receive not only the pastry, but also the round pan it is baked in, as it is deemed to delicate to be removed. Look for the decorative crisscross pattern on top to identify it.

STRUFFOLI (STRUF-fol-ee) Neapolitan struffoli are a longstanding Christmas tradition in Campania. The fried dough balls are tossed in honey, then mixed with candies and sprinkles. They are served in piles on a plate, and are available in any pasticceria this time of year. If buying a large platter of fried dough and confetti seems intimidating, try a small plate, as they’re usually available in varying sizes.

This type of sweet bread loaf originated in Milan, not Naples, but it has become a common Christmas dessert throughout all of Italy. Typically, the tall, domed loaf contains candied citrus fruits and raisins, but some versions include chocolate and other flavorings. It is usually cut into vertical slices and served with a sparkling wine like spumante during Christmas or New Year's celebrations. Another type of sweet yeast bread, pandoro, is similar to panettone, but lacks the candied fruits and raisins. Pandoro is also eaten during the winter holidays, but originated in Verona and has a base shaped like an eight-pointed star.

MOSTACCIOLI (mohs-ta-CHOL-ee)

SUSAMIELLI (Soo-sah-MYAY-lee) These cookies, shaped like a letter “s,” are a challenge for the teeth. Biting into one is unexpectedly hard and chewy, but the texture grows on you after a while. They are made from a dough of honey, flour, ground almonds and sugar, and spiced with cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla. Some versions are called sapienze.

These Neapolitan Christmas cookies, shaped like a diamond or rhomboid, are covered with dark chocolate. Some bianco versions are covered in white chocolate. Inside, the firm cookie is usually spiced with nutmeg, lemon zest, cinnamon, cloves and cocoa powder.

NAVFAC EURAFSWA Italian National Retires After 39 Years of Service

Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Europe Africa Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA) Commanding Officer Capt. Robert McLean presents Italian national, Lorenzo Pece, with a letter of farewell and appreciation during Pece's retirement ceremony at Naval Support Activity Naples, Dec. 10. An Italian national, attached to Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Europe Africa Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA), the host nation political advisor, retired at Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy after 39 years of service, Dec. 10. In October 1974, Lorenzo Pece, joined the NAVFAC team as a mechanical engineer. He served as supervisor engineer for the Director of Facilities Support Section until 1986. He later worked as the Engineering Field Activity Mediterranean regional facilities coordination engineer until 1992. “This type of civilian retirement ceremony may be a bit out of the ordinary, but so are Enzo’s contributions and many decades of service and I think this is a fitting tribute,” said Capt. Robert McLean, NAVFAC EURAFSWA commanding officer. “You should be most proud of your accomplishments, the many lease/construct projects which you ran for the U.S. in Italy, shaping our force lay down and community support for literally decades. The capacity of our operational facilities and the quality of life of our members have improved greatly with your efforts.” Pece, a native of Messina, Sicily, earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Palermo University in Italy, July 1972 and has been a professional engineer since December 1972. He has been responsible for technical and management assistance to U.S. Navy installations around Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, including special projects, military construction projects, energy conservation programs and utility contracts. McLean noted that one of Pece’s projects stood out to him the most during his time with NAVFAC. He cited a clip from a brag sheet that was on the Assistant Secretary of the Navy website 10 years ago. “The Naples Improvement Initiative is a comprehensive design, construction, lease, maintenance program aimed at the total re-capitalization of the Navy community in Naples, Italy. Program objectives to improve life safety, quality of life, security, operations and control escalating lease costs are being accomplished through a combination of over $650 million in lease construction and MILCON [military construction] at two sites. It is the largest undertaking of facilities development through lease, design, construct and acquisition process ever undertaken by the Navy, if not the Department of Defense.” Pece has been responsible for the procurement, negotiation and execution of lease-construction projects, for Host Nation Government Land Acquisitions and for the management of the U.S. section of the mixed commission. He has served as liaison with the Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC) of the U.S. Embassy in Rome and with the Italian Ministry of Defense for the approval of U.S. Armed Forces construction projects in Italy. Pece received the U.S. Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1999 for execution of lease-construction projects in Naples and Sigonella. He also received the U.S. Army “Scroll of Appreciation” in 2007 for his accomplishment of lease-construction projects in Vicenza and Camp Darby.

Harley Owners Deliver Toys to Military Kids

Above: The Harley Owner's Group (HOG) Naples Military Chapter, connected area military children with the holiday spirit and toys during their toy give away outside the Support Site bowling alley, Dec. 17. (Photos by Joseph Piccolo) Left: Members of the Harley-Davidson Owner's Group (HOG) Naples Military Chapter escort Santa Claus on the Support Site to prepare for a holiday visit with children outside the bowling alley, Dec. 17. The group collected more than 200 toys to hand out, not including an anonymous donation of more than 300 ninja LEGO packs and approximately 200 miniature Disney dolls. The organization started doing the collection last year. "We wanted to give back to our military children for all of their sacrifice while their military parents are working late or deployed, to show them we are all one big family," said Fleet Master Chief JoAnn Ortloff, the chapter's Ladies of Harley officer.
