Yuletide Spirit Fills the Air around Naples

W hat ’ s I nsIde

Christmas warmth and joy radiate in the city with handcrafted Nativity scenes in the historic center as well as in churches and museums all around town. Christmas trees now also twinkle at shopping malls and shops reminding shoppers ‘tis the season for gift giving. On selected dates through midDecember, Verdi’s “Aida” opera will mesmerize audiences with outstanding scenes, costumes and songs to be followed towards the end of month by the holiday ballet favorite, “The Nutcracker.” Also enhancing the joyful season is the opening of the annual “Showcolate” today in Piazza Plebiscito while some Campanian towns are busily planning their upcoming gastronomical events or musical shows.

Presepe Traditional Neapolitan Christmas art lives on To recall Christ’s humble birth, St. Francis of Assisi is said to have celebrated Mass in front of a cave with a manger and animals in 1223. The representation subsequently inspired church clerics and Italian nobles to commission centerpieces for their own use, generating the spread of the art. Today, a favorite Neapolitan tradition you can share is to add a new figure to the family Presepe each year. Nativity craftsmen in the narrow San Gregorio Armeno Street are living proofs of the art that developed in the city during Bourbon times. To date, the Cuciniello Crib in the San Martino Monastery Museum, donated by the local architect and playwright Michele Cuciniello, is the city’s largest and most exquisite achievement of the art. This is a great one to share with your holiday guests. Described by critics as a “theatrical event,” the work features the Holy Family in the midst of nearly 600 villagers and shepherds dressed in traditional Neapolitan costumes going about their daily lives — farming, cooking, entertaining, dining or dancing. Galleria Umberto, with its designer shops and boutiques across from the San Carlo Theater and the Royal Palace, is a favorite gathering point for Neapolitans during the holidays. Remembering Pearl Harbor An Account of the Pearl Harbor Attack by Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Lee Soucy, crewman aboard the USS Utah (AG 16) From the Naval History and Heritage Command and courtesy of the Historian, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery

I had just had breakfast and was looking out a porthole in sick bay when someone said, "What the hell are all those planes doing up there on a Sunday?" Someone else said, "It must be those crazy Marines. They'd be the only ones out maneuvering on a Sunday." When I looked up in the sky I saw five or six planes starting their descent. Then when the first bombs dropped on the hangers at Ford Island, I thought, "Those guys are missing us by a mile." Inasmuch as practice bombing was a daily occurrence to us, it was not too unusual for planes to drop bombs, but the time and place were quite out of line. We could not imagine bombing practice in port. It occurred to me and to most of the others that someone had really

goofed this time and put live bombs on those planes by mistake. In any event, even after I saw a huge fireball and cloud of black smoke rise from the hangers on Ford Island and heard explosions, it did not occur to me that these were enemy planes. It was too incredible! Simply beyond imagination! "What a SNAFU," I moaned. As I watched the explosions on Ford Island in amazement and disbelief, I felt the ship lurch. We didn't know it then, but we were being bombed and torpedoed by planes approaching from the opposite (port) side. The bugler and bosun's mate were on the fantail ready to raise the colors at 8 o'clock. In a matter of seconds, the bugler sounded "General Quarters." I grabbed my first aid bag and headed for my battle station amidship. See Remembering Pearl Harbor Page 11

Sojourner’s Permits Required for Holiday Travel

By Capt. Scott Gray NSA Commanding Officer

Tomorrow, the United States commemorates the 72nd anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. NSA will commemorate the event this morning at 10 a.m. in the Capo piazza. The attack resulted in the death of 2,403 Department of Defense personnel and precipitated our entrance into the Pacific theatre during WWII. The attack began at 7:55 a.m. on Dec. 7, 1941. Japanese naval forces included six mighty aircraft carriers, 2 heavy cruisers, 35 submarines, 2 light cruisers, 9 oilers, 2 battleships and 11 destroyers. The attacking forces came in two waves, the first consisting of 183 aircraft which included 40 torpedo planes, 49 level bombers, 51 dive bombers and 43 fighters. The second wave included 170 planes, 54 of them level bombers, 80 divebombers and 36 fighters. Over 350 Japanese planes were involved in overall attack which devastated the Pacific Fleet. Please join us in remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice during this morning’s brief ceremony. There are many ways we can come together during this holiday season, for celebration, introspection or reflection. Last night, the tree lighting ceremony and annual holiday Navy Band concert were held aboard Support Site for hundreds of personnel and their families. Over the coming days, many command Christmas Parties will provide an opportunity to enjoy the holidays with friends and co-workers. Tomorrow, the annual Army/Navy game will kick off at noon at the Naples High School football stadium. Next Wednesday, Dec. 11, the Harlem Globetrotters will perform at Naples High School at 7:30 p.m. Though all the advanced tickets have been distributed with single Sailors receiving the priority, there will be about 250 seats available the day of the event on a first come, first served basis. The annual Christmas Cantata concert will be held at the Support Site Chapel on Saturday, Dec. 14. The cantata begins at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the community. The following day, Sunday, Dec. 15 will see the third annual Operation Buon Natale at the Support Site Teen Center gym, where children from a local orphanage are invited aboard to receive gifts provided by military community members, enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner, and participate in cultural exchange with our local military community and their families. For those still waiting to mail gifts back to the States, be aware that our “guaranteed by Dec. 25” dates have already passed for Parcel Post, Space Available, First Class and Priority Mail. Express Mail Military Service is due by Dec. 16. Do not delay, and as always, ensure that you purchase insurance for packages as uninsured packages receive no protection from loss, theft or destruction. Enjoy these last few weeks of 2013 as we ramp up for the holidays, and remember to stay safe!

Reminder from RLSO: check your sojourner permit to ensure that it is still valid for holiday travel. If not, come to Region Legal Service Office, Legal Assistance Department, at Capodichino on the 1st floor of Admin II. Legal Assistance must be notified at least one full week prior to anticipated travel in order to facilitate the process of providing you with a sojourner permit or a receipt that will allow your reentry into Italy. Please contact Legal Assistance with any questions at 081-568-4576.

Positive Balances on School Lunch Accounts Required To ensure your child receives a nutritious school lunch, sponsors should keep a positive balance in their child’s account at all times. Student accounts with a negative balance severely affect the ability of the School Meal Program to be self-sustaining. The NEX, your food service provider, does not have the financial resources to provide student meals without reimbursement. Payments are accepted at NEX Customer Service. You can also set up a free account at www.mypaymentsplus.com to keep track of your child’s account balance and set up low balance alerts. For a small fee, you can add money to your child’s balance from your home or office computer, tablet, smart phone, or other mobile device.

Reminder: No Pets Allowed on School Grounds Community members are asked to refrain from walking dogs while dropping off or picking up children from school. The Pet Policy for NSA Naples includes three areas on Support Site where pets are unauthorized: TLA, the Commissary/NEX shopping center, and the school facilities. Waste Burning in Italy can Bring 6-Year Prison Sentence Waste burning without authorization in Italy can be punished with penalties up to 6 years of prison. This has been a plague particularly in the southern Campania region, said Premier Enrico Letta Tuesday. The decree introduced provides tougher controls on agricultural land, harsh penalties for those found guilty of burning waste, and allocated an additional 600 million euros to the 300 million already granted to Campania to clear land used for illegal garbage dumps. The measure is effective immediately though it needs to be approved by both houses of parliament to be converted into law. According to environmental group Legambiente, 14 percent of environmental crimes in Italy take place in Campania, where 6,000 illegal waste fires and 2,000 toxic dumps were reported between January 2012 and August 2013. Italian farmers' confederation, CIA, welcomed the decree, stressing that the waste crisis has led to a 35 percent to 40 percent drop in sales of typical food products from Campania, like buffalo mozzarella cheese, fruit and vegetables, with annual losses for the regional food sector estimated at around 5 billion euros.

Naples to Open New Metro Station Naples inaugurated a new metro station called Garibaldi, which will connect the suburban area of the city to downtown Naples and the railway station by the end of December. Many officials attended

Since the film’s debut, Rodriguez’s music has been enjoying a revival sparking high-grossing record sales and a worldwide tour. He will perform two concerts in Italy, one in Bologna, March 22, and one in Milan, March 23.

YULETIDE SPIRIT Continued from Page 1

Angels, animals, varied village and landscape settings enhance the spectacular explosion of color and drama, inspiring many viewers of the piece to visit more creches in the city. Impressive tableaux of the sort are also displayed at the Royal Palaces in Caserta and Naples.

Opera San Carlo Theater set to amaze with Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Aida’ Profuse pomp and glory opens the 18th century venue’s lyrical season with the world-acclaimed opera, “Aida”. Well-remembered for the triumphal march music and Egyptian pharaohs and other symbols, the masterpiece follows a rivalrous love triangle. The story unfolds with the Ethiopian slave, Aida, in love with the military commander, Radames, who in turn is loved by Amneris, the Pharaoh’s daughter. Radames is secretly in love with Aida and is torn between the country he serves and the woman he loves, a dilemma that is sorted out through passionate arias, duets and choruses in the four-act work. Joining forces for the spectacular event are musical director Nicola Luisotti, choirmaster Salvatore Caputo, ballet corps director Alessandra Panzavolta and stage director Franco Dragone. Besides Lucrecia Garcia and Kristin Lewis sharing the role of Aida, Jorge De Leòn and Fabio Sartori are interpreting Radames on specified evenings. The San Carlo orchestra, chorus and ballet corps are also in the program. Other cast members can be identified at http://www.teatrosancarlo.it/. Performances run through Dec 17. Book online through the theater’s website or call 081-7972331.

Ballet ‘The Nutcracker’ ballet to enchant audiences Magical, “The Nutcracker” returns to the San Carlo Theater with stellar dancers Giuseppe Picone, Ambra Vallo and the San Carlo Ballet Corps under the direction of David Coleman Dec. 29-Jan 5. A holiday staple in many theaters for the dance routines and winter wonderland scenarios (Christmas trees, snowflakes, dolls, toy soldiers, gifts and food) the work provides heaps of heartwarming spirit and cheer. In the story, a nutcracker prince comes to life then leads the young and pretty Clara to the enchanting

world of the Sugar Plum Fairy for outstanding winter ambiance and entertainment. Based on Ernst Hoffman’s "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice," Marius Petipa choreographed the ballet in the 19th century, music for which Tchaikovsky later composed. For the production, credits go to Ballet Corps Director Alessandra Panzavolta; Children’s Chorus Director, Stefania Rinaldi; Nicola Rubertelli for the sets and Giusi Giustino for the costumes. Did you know that chronic stress is one of the major causes of overeating and, at the same time, a trigger for weight loss dieters? What happens is that cortisol-a hormone released by the body as a response to stress-is responsible for our cravings of carbs and sweets. Cortisol provides this extra energy to the fat cells near the liver where they are quickly converted into glucose so we can fight or fly. On the other hand, cortisol affects liver functionality and slows down the entire digestive system inducing even more cravings. And the more fat that is stored, the harder it is to lose weight! Managing stress then becomes critical for weight control. Diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, mindful eating, guided imagery, journaling, yoga are some of the techniques discussed and experienced in the Stress Management class. Call 081-811-6533 for more information.

Naples Community Health Awareness

Nimitz Visits Pearl Harbor

From Naval Support Activity Naples Public Affairs

The Naples Public Health Evaluation (PHE) was an extensive effort to learn more about the potential environmental health risks present in the Campania region of Italy. The Navy established health protective policies based on the study’s findings to protect the health of U.S. personnel and their families, which includes bottled water advisories and health protective lease clauses. The PHE found the potential health risks for living offbase can be mitigated by following established risk-management actions. The enduring health protection policies are as follows: • Maintain the July 2008 bottled water advisory for U.S. personnel living off base. • Maintain the New Lease Suspension Zone (NLSZ) areas, based on U.S. Navy and Italian environmental sampling data. In these zones, U.S. Navy personnel are not permitted to sign new rental home leases. • Maintain the U.S. Naval Support Activity Naples PHE website and the U.S. Navy Regional Water Quality Board. • Maintain the health-protective U.S. Navy lease clauses for private off-base rental homes: – Landlords must provide containerized water service from a Navy-approved vendor. – Leased homes must be supplied by city water or permitted wells. Landlords must disconnect all non-permitted wells and provide proof of connection to the city water system or that the well is permitted. – Landlords should clean and disinfect domestic water holding tanks every six months. • The U.S. Navy will continue to share data with designated Italian public health officials.

Throughout the Public Health Evaluation, the U.S. Navy established health protective policies and took immediate action, when necessary, to protect the health of U.S. personnel and their families. The risk management analysis determined that many of the health protective policies established during Phase I and Phase II will continue, as well as new policies implemented to ensure continued health protection. The Phase I and II reports, along with fact sheets addressing commonly asked questions and a detailed timeline of study components, are available through a link on the Naval Support Activity Naples website: www.cnic.navy.mil/Naples. If you have a concern about your specific health risk and how the study relates to you, please contact the U.S. Naval Hospital Naples at DSN: 629-6299 or commercial: 081-811-6299.

Seeking Nominations for the 2014 Women's Leadership Awards From Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs

The Navy's Office of Women's Policy announced in NAVADMIN 293/13 that the Navy is accepting nominations for the 2014 Capt. Joy Bright Hancock and Master Chief Anna Der-Vartanian Leadership Awards. Presented annually, the awards recognize and honor the inspirational and visionary leadership of Navy service members whose ideals and dedication foster a positive working environment, while reinforcing and furthering the integration of women into the Navy. Nominations are now being accepted for four award categories: senior officer (O-4 and above), junior officer (W-2 through O-3), senior enlisted (E-7 through E-9), and junior enlisted (E-5 through E6). One award winner will be chosen for each category. Nominees should embody inspirational, innovative and imaginative leadership demonstrated by example both on and off duty. Additionally, applicants should be mature leaders who have shown exceptional leadership over time and have overcome challenges while serving. Nominations should also address the professional accomplishments, leadership style, and community involvement of the service member. Candidates must be nominated by their commanding officer or officer in charge and receive an endorsement from the command's immediate superior in command (ISIC). Nominations are open to both active and Reserve service members. Nominations are due no later than Jan. 17. Packages must be submitted electronically via the command's ISIC to Chief Petty Officer Jessica Myers, senior enlisted advisor to the Office of Women's Policy, at jessica.myers@navy.mil. Previous award winners include Command Master Chief (SW/AW) Susan Whitman, who served aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) when she was selected as the 2011 Capt. Joy Bright Hancock Senior Enlisted Leadership Award winner. Soon after receiving her award, Whitman was selected to serve as the Naval Safety Training Center command master chief. In October 2013, Whitman will become the force master chief for Commander Naval Surface Forces Atlantic, becoming one of only two enlisted women in the Navy serving in the position of a force master chief. Chief Petty Officer Sonseeahray Walker, of Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, and Chief Petty Officer Virginia L. Horton, of Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, Wash., were recipients of the Master Chief Anna DerVartanian Junior Enlisted Leadership Award as first class petty officers in 2011 and 2012 consecutively. Both Walker and Horton were promoted to the rank of chief petty officer last month. "It was an honor to receive the award, and it means a lot to me, being in the military for 17 years," said Walker. "When I found out, I was actually shocked for being awarded above all the outstanding women in the Navy. It means more than anything to be recognized and acknowledged for what I do." Joy Bright Hancock and Master Chief Anna Der-Vartanian Leadership awards or to download an award template, visit http://www.public.navy.mil/bupersnpc/organization/ bupers/womenspolicy/pages/hancockaward.aspx.

Myth Busting - Addressing Sailors' Concerns By Vice Adm. Bill Moran, Chief of Naval Personnel

Shipmates, Just back from a five-day trip to the West coast where I had several opportunities to meet with Sailors stretching from the Pacific Northwest (Bangor, Everett and Bremerton), south to Monterey and finishing up in San Diego. In Washington, Fleet Beldo and I visited USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG-60), USS Alabama (SSBN), USS Nebraska (SSBN) and USS John C. Stennis (CVN74). In Monterey we met with Naval Post Graduate School faculty and staff and addressed the combined service student body at a SECNAV Guest Lecture. Finally, in San Diego, we spent half a day underway onboard USS Fort Worth (LCS3), spoke at an all hands call with HSC and HSM Sailors on Naval Air Station North Island, before finishing the day meeting with Sailors at Naval Special Warfare. At every interaction with Sailors (and even in the questions we received on social media sites) it was clear that there is still bad gouge, rumors and causing Sailors and families a fair amount of anxiety. At each stop questions about pay and benefits, the budget, and advancement opportunities dominated our engagements. So, let me share with you what

we talked about, help ease some of the uncertainty and do a little "myth busting": Myth: we can expect to see pay cuts, benefit cuts and changes to our retirement benefits? Not True. I'm not seeing any proposals to cut pay or benefits, and Sailors serving today will not be affected by changes to the current retirement system. However, and here is where I need your help in passing correct info, I do expect pay raises to level off and there is a good chance that future generations of Sailors could sign up to a different retirement system that looks different from the one all of us will receive. Bottom line - if you stay for 20, you'll receive the retirement benefits on the books today, regardless of what comes down the road - those changes only affect Sailors who come in after the law is modified. Why all this churn over pay and compensation - well, it's fairly simple – we have to get our arms around growing personnel costs if we are to remain a technologically relevant and forward operating Navy. With perhaps more than half of every dollar we spend in the Department of Defense going to personnel costs, our ability to buy new equipment or modernize what we have, or even operate at levels we need to in order to stay ready will be reduced. Myth: The current budget environment means fewer ships and the Navy will be forced to send Sailors home, leaving us undermanned at sea? Not at all. Little doubt that the current budget environment will have some affect on the size of our future Navy, both in terms of ships and Sailors. If there are cuts to force structure (ships, subs, aircraft, units, etc.) then and only then will we reduce the numbers of people in the Navy. If we do get smaller, we are well positioned to make reductions to our total number of people without having to use harsh or unpopular involuntary actions-for example, by slowing down our accessions in Great Lakes and raising the quality bar for those who are reenlisting.

Over the last couple of years we put a lot of effort into filling gaps in our at sea billets, including added accessions. As these added Sailors continue to graduate A and C schools, at sea manning will continue to improve. So if we do have to get smaller, we will do so in a manner that keeps us whole and prevents us from being undermanned where we need people the most-at sea. Myth: The threat of manpower reductions means advancement rates for this exam cycle are way down. No way. As you will soon see this week, overall advancement opportunities remain above historic averages, and even still better than the average for the past ten years. Overall opportunity decreased slightly (-1.23) this cycle as compared to last, but again, above the norm and I expect future advancement opportunities will stabilize along historic norms. As in every cycle, some rates will see improvement while others see decline. This is normal. What we are trying to do is to avoid large swings in opportunity between cycles. So, for our shipmates who didn't advance, now is not the time to get frustrated and lose faith. Get with your Chief and LPO, figure out why you didn't advance and look for ways to improve your chances for the next cycle-keep studying, continue to improve your performance and if needed consider transitioning to undermanned rates with higher advancement opportunities. Keep the faith, your time will come to stay Navy and advance. Those are just a few of the bad myths we ran into on this trip. Thanks to everyone who asked good, probing questions or provided feedback during this trip or on social media. Keep that feedback coming-this doesn't work unless I hear from you. Fleet Beldo and I will continue to use all hands calls and this blog to bust these myths. Help us out by sharing this info with your Shipmates and familieshelp put an end to rumors and unnecessary worry. See you around the Fleet, CNP

Do You Qualify for Free or Reduced School Meals? By Annise Winslow, School Liaison Officer

Bottled Water Advisory By MC2 Eva-Marie Ramsaran, NAVFAC EURAFSWA Public Affairs

Healthy meals can positively impact a child’s ability to learn. The Support Site schools use the NEX School Lunch Program to offer a healthy lunch every school day for its students. In order to ensure all children have access to healthy meals offered at the schools, Department of Defense Dependent Schools, NEX, and the School Liaison Office offer free or reduced price lunch for qualified families under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Free lunches are available to those who qualify, along with reduced lunches priced at $.40. Community members can submit applications, with a copy of your family household income and Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) for the current month, to the Naples school liaison officer, Annise Winslow. The application form may be obtained from the School’s Administrative Offices. Some common questions regarding free and reduced lunches are: Do I need to fill out an application for each child? No. Use one Free and Reduced Price School Meal application for all students in your household. Please ensure that you have completely filled the application form as we cannot approve an incomplete application. Return the completed application to Annise.Winslow@eu.navy.mil

Except for those living at the Support Site and Capodichino, bottled water is recommended. Treated water is provided free of charge at a dispenser located outside the Capodichino east parking garage. All economy leases negotiated through the Housing office have a bottle water clause, which requires the landlord to provide bottled water. Work with landlords to have any water holding tanks disinfected twice a year and ensure your tap water is disconnected from non-permitted wells and connected only to the city water system.

Kids Talk: My Trip to Barcelona By Ferdinando Johnston (age 9)

Who can get free or reduced priced meals? Your child may receive free or reduced priced meals if your household’s gross household income is within the established Federal Income Eligibility Guideline limits outlined in the following table:

SY 2013/2014 Income Eligibility Guidenlines Household Size 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Reduced Price Meals Annual 35,853 45,159 54,464 64,770 73,075 82,381 91,686

Monthly 2,988 3,764 4,539 5,315 6,090 6,866 7,641

Free Meals

Annual 25,194 31,733 38,272 44,811 51,350 57,889 64,428

Monthly 2,100 2,645 3,190 3,735 4,280 4,825 5,369

My child’s application was approved last year. Do I need to fill out another one? Yes. Your child’s application is only good for that school year and for the first 30 days of the following school year. You must submit a newly completed application for all subsequent school years. I get WIC; can my child get free meals? Children in households participating in WIC may be eligible for free or reduced price meals. Please complete an application to determine your eligibility to the program. Will the information I give be checked? Yes, and we may also ask you to send written proof. If I don’t qualify now, may I apply later? Yes, you may apply at any time during the school year. For example, children with a parent or guardian who becomes unemployed may become eligible for free and reduced price meals if the household income drops below the income limit. May I apply if someone in my household is not a U.S. citizen? Yes. You or your child do not have to be U.S. citizens to qualify for free or reduced price meals. Who should I include as members of my household? You must include all people living in your household, related or not (such as grandparents, other relatives, or friends) who share income and expenses. You must include yourself and all children living with you. If you live with other people who are economically independent (for example, people who you do not support, who do not share income with you or your children, and who pay a pro-rated share of expenses), do not include them. What if my income is not always the same? List the amount that you normally receive prior to deductions taken out. For example, if you normally gross $1,000 each month, but you missed some work last month and only grossed $900, put down that you made $1000 per month. If you normally get overtime, include it, but do not include it if you only work overtime sometimes. If you have lost a job or had your hours or wages reduced, use your current income. Are there any military benefits not considered as income? If you reside overseas, currently two military benefits are NOT considered as income: overseas housing allowance (OHA) and cost of living allowance (COLA). For additional questions about the free and reduced price lunch program, please contact your school liaison officer at DSN: 629-6549 or 081-811-6549.

Recently, I went on a trip to Barcelona, Spain with my family. I really wanted to visit Spain to see a new place and explore more of Europe. I specifically wanted to visit Barcelona because I love art and architecture, and Barcelona has the famous Picasso Museum. We stayed in an apartment close to Las Ramblas Street, where many museums and famous buildings are located. It’s in the old part of the city. My favorite buildings were designed by Gaudi, an amazing architect who lived in Spain a long time ago. His architecture continues to amaze people today. One of his most famous designs is the La Sagrada Familia, a church in Barcelona. Casa Batlló and Casa Mila were also Gaudi works. His architecture was a little too crazy for most people during his lifetime, but he was appreciated later as a genius. Our trip to Barcelona was a lot of fun and also very inspiring. My favorite part was exploring Casa Batlló.

Ask the Doc: How do I know that my supplements are safe? By Lt. Elizabeth Fidler, U.S. Naval Hospital Naples

More and more service members, their families and members of the community are turning to over-the-counter supplements for disease prevention, performance enhancement, and muscle building. Certain supplements, like prenatal vitamins in pregnancy or vitamin D for the treatment of a deficiency, are routinely prescribed by providers. Others are self-prescribed and carry some degree of risk. It may be the looming weighins, the desire to be appealing to your partner or potential partner, fear of illness, or the pursuit of an optimal level of health that encourages the use of supplementation, but it is important to research your supplement to ensure that it’s safe and being used in an appropriate manner. Supple-

ments are not tested or regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Thus, their safety or any claimed benefits are unproven. Some supplements can be downright harmful. Recent concerns related to soldier deaths have resulted in GNC and other military outlets removing products containing 1,3-dimethylamylamine (DMAA), a weight loss and bodybuilding agent, from their shelves. If you are unsure about the safety of your supplement or have questions about its use, please visit the Department of Defense’s Human Performance Resource Center at http://hprc-online.org. The website contains important information about healthy lifestyle changes, tips on wellness, and resources for your family. We are always here to help.

If you have questions or concerns about supplement safety or are starting a new weight loss program, consult your Medical Home Port Team by calling 081-811-6000 during business hours or through secured messaging at www.Relayhealth.com.

REMEMBERING PEARL HARBOR Continued from Page 1

A number of the ship's tre mors are vaguely imprinted in my mind, but I remember one jolt quite vividly. As I was running down the passageway toward my battle station, another torpedo or bomb hit and shook the ship severely. I was knocked off balance and through the log room door. I got up a little dazed and immediately darted down the ladder below the armored deck. I forgot my first aid kit. By then the ship was already Image courtesy of Naval History and Heritage listing. There Command were a few men down below who looked dumbfounded and wondered out loud, "What's going on?" I felt around my shoulder in great alarm. No first aid kit! Being out of uniform is one thing, but being at a battle station without proper equipment is more than embarrassing. After a minute or two below the armored deck, we heard another bugle call, then the bosun's whistle followed by the boatswain's chant, "Abandon ship...Abandon ship." We scampered up the ladder. As I raced toward the open side of the deck, an officer stood by a stack of life preservers and tossed the jackets at us as we ran by. When I reached the open deck, the ship was listing precipitously. I thought about the huge amount of ammunition we had on board and that it would surely blow up soon. I wanted to get away from the ship fast, so I discarded my life jacket. I didn't want a Mae West slowing me down. Another thing that jolted my memory was how rough the beach on Ford Island was. The day previous, I had been part of a fire and rescue party dispatched to fight a small fire on Ford Island. The fire was out by the time we got there but I remember distinctly the rugged beach, so I tied double knots in my shoes whereas just about everyone else kicked theirs off. I was tensely poised for a running dive off the partially exposed hull when the ship lunged again and threw me off balance. I ended up with my bottom sliding across and down the barnacle encrusted bottom of the ship. When the ship had jolted, I thought we had been hit by another bomb or torpedo, but later it was determined that the mooring lines snapped which caused the 21,000-ton ship to jerk so violently as she keeled over. Nevertheless, after I bobbed up to the surface of the water to get my bearings, I spotted a motor launch with a coxswain fishing men out of the water with his boot hook. I started to swim toward the launch. After a few strokes, a hail of bullets hit the water a few feet in front of me in line with the launch. As the strafer banked, I noticed the big red insignias on his wing tips. Until then, I really had not known who attacked us. At some point, I had heard someone shout, "Where did those Germans come from?" I quickly decided that a boat full of men would be a more likely strafing target than a lone swimmer, so I changed course and hightailed it for Ford Island. I reached the beach exhausted and as I tried to catch my breath, another pharmacist's mate, Gordon Sumner, from the Utah, stumbled out of the water. I remember how elated I was to see him. There is no doubt in my mind that bewilderment, if not misery, loves company. I remember I felt guilty that I had not made any effort to recover my first aid kit. Sumner had his wrapped around his shoulders. While we both tried to get our wind back, a jeep came speeding by and came to a screeching halt. One of the two officers in the vehicle had spotted our Red Cross brassards and hailed us aboard. They took us to a two- or three-story concrete BOQ (bachelor officer's quarters) facing Battleship Row to set up an emergency treatment station for several oil-covered casualties strewn across the concrete floor. Most of them were from the capsized or flaming battleships. It did not take long to exhaust the supplies in Sumner's bag. For more of Soucy’s story or that of others, as well as photo collections, fact sheets, and ships present, visit the Naval History and Heritage Command at www. history.navy.mil.
