Craig Clapperton, commanding officer, USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20). “Mount Whitney served as the command and control platform, enabling ESG-2 to oversee both forces, guarantee the safety of all operations, issue orders, val-
idate procedures, enforce rules of engagement, and ensure each group was accurately assessing their enemies’ intentions and responding with an appropriate level of force.” Taking place in the Baltic Sea, a region bustling with merchant and fishing traffic, maintaining a safe navigational environment during the wargame phase can be challenging. “Operating in the confined waters of the Baltic…there is a lot to think about in the plan-
ning and executing of the exercises in order to keep working safely…communications are the single most important issue to solve,” explained Danish Cmdr. Peter Henegouwen, commanding officer of the Dutch/Danish Mine Counter Measure (MCM) ship task unit. “Working together means finding out about each other’s capabilities and limitations; this cannot be done from an office.”

The first mistake was looking down. The second mistake was looking up. Refocusing directly ahead through the thick glass, all of the structures on the River Thames were coming alive with light against the dusk. Watching the landscape grow wider as we gained altitude, soon the other capsules and long arms attached to them were no longer visible on each side. Fighting queasiness, I focused on Big Ben and the House of Parliament, glowing gold below as the daylight dimmed. We were on top of the London Eye watching the sunset. This lofty perch over one of Europe’s greatest cities was one I had never experienced during my many trips to London throughout the years. London, like Paris or New

York, is a place many travelers dream of seeing sometime in their lives. But like those cities, there are multiple layers with complexity throughout the many boroughs that surround the city. Exploring those neighborhoods is getting a taste of real life outside the tourist zone. In years past, I’d rented apartments and B&B’s in
Kensington, Chelsea, Camden and Hammersmith. Those neighborhoods have a character all their own, and digging into local life was a passionate pursuit. Going to local flea markets, neighborhood restaurants and small grocery stores created a feeling of living in another culture for a short time. See An Eye on London Page 6

This last weekend, many people got out to enjoy the great weather and take advantage of USO and MWR events. The pool was packed. Kids were playing. And someone was bitten by an off-leash dog. It’s vitally important that we do relax in our downtime, enjoy all of the great things the surrounding area has to offer, or kick back for a “weekend in” of cookouts, get-togethers and simple fun. We cannot afford, however, to get lax on things that matter. There are reasons that rules and procedures exist for our pets, and unfortunately last weekend’s incident highlights those reasons. Since the dog bite, our security teams have been out checking up on dogs around the support site. Don’t be surprised if they ask to see your dog’s tags, or ensure your pet’s weight. Folks who are not complying with our policies will be ticketed. We need to keep a safe environment for our families; this extends to common sense steps like not allowing dogs into fenced off children’s play areas. Everyone should be able to enjoy what the summer has to offer, and we’ve got a lot coming up. Heading into the 4th of July and Festa Americana celebrations, there are a lot of opportunities to enjoy in the coming weeks. This afternoon, the British Fete at the JFC Base in Lago Patria is free for all U.S. service members, NATO personnel and families. The USO has another cookout upcoming over lunch on June 24th. This is a great time to bring the kids along, as the event also kicks off the children’s summer reading program at the Support Site library. On June 28th, the USO will host Sesame Street from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the High School gym. This is going to be a fantastic show. The next day is Festa Americana out at Carney Park, which despite being a one-day event this year is packed with music and shows, including a high-wire act. The 4th of July will kick off a 4-day weekend, capped with a performance from Scarletta, a Nashville country/rock band, on July 7th. There are golf tournaments on the horizon, with the USO on June 21, the MWR’s Red, White and Blue on July 4, and with the Tiger Sharks on July 19. Daily options for different types of sports lessons, day trips and extended tours, music events and classes are available to all of us. Take a look at PAO notes for more information. Gold Star Families Designated Parking Spaces Now Available Surviving families of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines are known as Gold Star Families (GSF). Four designated parking space for GSF will be available in Gricignano at the Fleet and Family Service Center, Village Forum, the Naples Commissary, the Navy Exchange, and the US Navy Hospital. One designated parking space for GSF will be available on the ground floor of the East Parking garage at Capo. Reminder: Fall Furlough Dates for Schools at NSA Naples The Mediterranean District office for Department of Defense Dependents Schools has announced the furlough schedule for regional schools. School Year 20132014 will begin as scheduled on Aug. 26; however, Naples Elementary School and Naples Middle/High School will close as a result of scheduled teacher furloughs on the following dates: Aug. 30, Sept. 9, Sept. 16, Sept. 23 and Sept. 30. Reminder: NEX Offering Online School Meal Payments for 2013-2013 School Year The Naples NEX will soon offer parents and guardians the convenience of making secure, cashless payments online through MyPaymentsPlus, for their children’s school meals. The online system, www.MyPaymentsPlus.com, will also offer mobile apps for smartphones and tablets, and is scheduled to be utilized for the 2013-2014 school year. It will allow parents to make one-time or auto payments, check balances, and receive reminders via email. Now – June 21: 5th Deck of Capo’s East Parking Garage Closed The fifth deck of the East Parking Garage at Capo will be closed from 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19 to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 21. Commander, Submarine Group 8 is schedule to hold a change of command ceremony in this location. Base security will tow vehicles left in the area during the time period reserved for the top-deck closure. Extra shuttle bus runs from Support Site to Capo are being put in place to ease parking strain during morning and evening commutes. Extra shuttle riders should plan to park in the lot adjacent to the Navy Exchange. All personnel are asked to plan accordingly. June 21: Capo Motor Vehicle Registration Office Closure Due to Italian Rest Day Friday, June 21, the Personal Property Office and Support Site Motor Vehicle Registration Offices will open for information and for emergency services only. Capo Motor Vehicle Registration Offices will be closed on Friday, June 21, while the Vehicle Processing center will remain open for normal operations. Both offices will be open for normal business on Monday, June 24. June 21: British Festival in Lago Patria The British military community is scheduled to host a festival called British Fete 2013 on Friday, June 21, at British Forces School and the new British Forces community center near the JFC base in Lago Patria. The festival will be held between noon and 5 p.m. All U.S. service members, NATO personnel, and their families will receive free entry. ONGOING/ON THE HORIZON Fiat 500 Passion On Sunday, the cities of Cesa and Aversa will celebrate the 10th national meeting of the Fiat 500. There will be a parade through the streets of Cesa starting at 8:30 a.m. and finishing at 11 a.m. with breakfast and live music offered by the Fiat 500 Club, Italy. Then the parade will go through the historic center of Cesa and Aversa where after showing off, participants will go to a local restaurant to end up the day after taking a photo with the mythical vehicle. The event is dedicated to young road victims, this year.
Colosseum Restorations Begin According to authorities, the restoration of the Colosseum is going to begin in the first week of July. The Council of State needs to give the final word on two final appeals to the project. One of the appeal was submitted by Codacons, a consumer group that complaint the bidding process on the project and the other appeal was submitted by a a contractor that lost its bid for the restorations. The 25-mil-
lion-euro restoration should be paid for by Diego Della Valle, the owner of the Tod’s shoe company. The construction of the Colosseum began in 72 AD and is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. It covers an area of 24,000 square meters. The Roman Superintendency of Archeology began in January to create a safety zone around the arena to prevent injuries from possible falling materials. The Colosseum was used for gladiator fightings, executions, mock sea battles and it could host about 50,000 spectactors.
Local Water Conditions Improve The Italian health ministry’s report said that Italian beaches, seas, rivers and lakes are in better shape this year as overall water quality improved by almost 5 percent. Since last year, bathing and swimming water has improved in quality by more than 4.7 percent. The report is based on data provided by Italy’s regional government and covers 5,509 different swimming sites including 4,880 coastal areas. The rest are river
and lakeside beaches and swimming holes that were measured for various kinds of bacterial contamination that could threaten human health. About 85 percent of water measured was judged to be excellent. The best water quality was found in Veneto and Emilia-Romagna regions while the worst was found along the coast of Abruzzo and in lakes in Lazio region.
Property Battle over Sports Car An Italian businessman bought a Ferrari F106 for about 35,000 euro ($47,000) in 1997. After three years, he transferred the Ferrari to his girlfriend for tax reasons. He made her sign a document in which she recognized him as the only and exclusive owner of the car, acknowledging he had paid for it. After the relationship ended, she managed to obtain all the proper documents necessary to sell the sports car to a dealership for 40,000 euro. The court has now ruled that she has to pay her former partner back the 40,000 euro, as well as 5,000 euro in "moral damages" and court costs.

Navy Lodge Naples Receives Carlson Award By MC2 John Herman,Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe
The Navy Lodge Naples received the Carlson award in a ceremony at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, 13 June. The Edward E. Carlson award is presented annually to recognize Navy Lodge’s who excel in the performance of operations and customer service. A ceremony was held on the patio of the Naples Navy Lodge where Kathy Olow, Navy Lodge Naples general manager, received the pyramidshaped Carlson award and presentation plaque for all of the Navy Lodge staff. “It’s an honor,” said Olow. “Navy Lodge Naples wouldn’t have achieved this without the staff and the hard work they put in everyday to support our military community.” The ceremony marked the first time that the Naples Navy Lodge has received the Carlson award. Captain Scott Gray, commanding officer NSA Naples, was a guest at the ceremony and congratulated the Navy Lodge team on their achievement. He commented on how important the Navy Lodge is to service members transitioning to and
from commands and the lasting impression Navy Lodge Naples made on him when he first arrived. “What I remember most about coming here was how easy the Navy Lodge made it for us,” said Gray. How nice the facilities were. How friendly and helpful the staff was. It really went a long way towards comforting us and making us feel right at home. I have no doubt that that is why you won this award.” Francine Faison, regional manager for Navy Lodge Naples, said she was extremely proud of Olow and her team. “It’s hard to win this award,” said Faison. “You have to balance all the elements: finances, your guests and making them happy. It’s a hard, but she balanced all that and still came out on top.” Faison also said that Navy Lodge Naples’ location overseas makes this award even more significant. Overseas, Navy Lodge staff has to deal with the ever changing currency exchange rates, coordinating with local contractors, importing supplies from the United States, which Faison said were challenges that state-side Navy Lodges do not deal with. Olow stresses they are here to help and provide for the military community as a home away from home.

In an official 2013 Graduation Recognition Ceremony hosted by the Naples’ Navy College Office, 61 service members and civilians were recognized as graduating with higher-level degrees at the base theater on Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, June 14. The all-encompassing graduation ceremony recognized students for having received diplomas during the 2012 and 2013 academic calendar year from an array of accredited higher-level educational institutions both on base and in the U.S. The degrees conferred during the ceremony included associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The ceremony, held to recognize students’ hard work and dedication, honored 61 graduates during the processional, but the program recognized all 160 Naples-area graduates. All services were represented at the graduation, as well as civilian employees and family members. Capt. Scott Gray, commanding officer of NSA Naples, presented the welcoming remarks. “Going to school while having a full-time job and perhaps juggling the requirements of a family is no easy task, so congratulations, this is the beginning
of a whole new world of opportunities,” said Gray. Master-at-Arms 1st Class Eugene Scott, attached to NSA Security, is an example of someone who has used his time in Naples to his benefit. Scott is graduating with his Associate’s of Applied Science in Criminal Justice from Central Texas College. Scott’s wife was also recognized for graduating with her bachelor’s degree. Both have been in Naples for about two and a half years, taking advantage of the time by working on their education. “It’s been a long time coming,” remarked Scott, “I’ve taken 2 to 3 courses per semester and it’s finally paying off.” Keynote speaker Javier Miyares, president of the worldwide University of Maryland University College program, reminded graduates of the importance of their college education through his own story of success and fulfillment in education. “Higher education opens the doors of opportunity and the impact of higher education can be farreaching,” said Miyares. After the ceremony, the graduates had an opportunity to enjoy refreshments and mingle with coworkers, family members and friends at a graduation reception.
If you haven't taken the following steps towards water conservation in your home, then today is the day to start. • Fix all leaks. This is the most obvious thing that you can do to stop wasting water at home. • Replace your showerhead with a low-flow alternative. You shower every day so it's important to reduce the amount of water that you're using when you do. • Install aerators in your other faucets. Your showerhead isn't the only faucet where too much water is coming out at once. Add aerators to your other faucets to reduce the amount of water flow. • Convert your toilet to a low-flush toilet. Waste less water every time that you flush. One simple way to do this is to fill a plastic milk jug halfway with pebbles or gravel and put it inside of your toilet tank. • Insulate all of your hot water pipes. You waste a lot of water by running it to heat it up. This is a lot less likely to be a problem if your water pipes are properly insulated. • Water your plants with your extra water. Collect rainwater as well as safe water around the house and use this in landscape watering around your home. • Turn off the water when you are at the sink. When brushing teeth and shaving at the sink, stop letting the water run. Learn to wash your face with cool water instead of letting it run to heat up. These little things do make a difference day after day. • Do full loads of everything that requires water. Dishwashers and washing machines should never be run when they are only half-full. It's a waste of water. • Find ways to replace water use with other options. For example, if you usually use running water to thaw your frozen meats then consider stopping that practice and thawing them in the refrigerator instead.

AN EYE ON LONDON The two occasions I had stayed in hotels were on business assignments. So despite a lot of time in this great city, I had truly never been a tourist doing the more touristy things. This trip was a fresh look at London the way most people see it the first time; from the top of a tour bus, deck of a tour boat, and from this glass capsule at four hundred, forty-three feet above the River Thames. Over three million people ride this Ferris wheel, the largest in Europe, every year. Skeptical about it since it opened in 1999 - one of the years I had been in London during the winter - now it was easy to understand the appeal. Looking down at Westminster Palace, Big Ben, Waterloo Station and a long stretch of the river on one side, the view is 360 degrees if you walk the perimeter of the roomy space where about 25 of us were housed for the 30-minute rotation. Directly below, Jubilee Gardens and the London Aquarium were congested with tourists jockeying for tickets to the other attractions along the pier. I had to admit, even with the crowd and waiting in line 30 minutes, this view over London was worth seeing once. The next stop was the river cruise purchased online as part of a package with the London Eye ticket. Racing against the darkening sky, we caught the last boat of the day and were two of only six people on the Silver Bonito’s expansive deck. Despite a brisk breeze, the perspective of the

Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral and Tower Bridge from the water felt strangely intimate. Cruising under the London Bridge, it was easy to feel a sense of awe motoring beneath an icon we used to sing about as children on the playground. The tourist thing was turning out to be fun, but part of that fun was due to the comparative lack of bodies. It was the dinner hour on a week day in April, no doubt very different from a Saturday in August. Disembarking at the Tower Millennium Pier, we walked to the Tower tube station for our ride back to the hotel. Along the way, a stroll through Trinity Gardens and the Tower Hill Memorial was a sobering experience. Commemorating both world wars, a huge sunken garden contains the names of 24,000 British Seaman who died at sea during World War II. A reminder that much of what we are seeing here in London, survived 76 consecutive days of bombing by Nazi Germany during World War II. The next day was doing what a lot of newcomers know to do in a new city, ride the open top, hopon-hop-off bus. Picking the route that focused on the city center tour, the bus lumbered through all parts of downtown London I had seen before, taking on a new life from an elevated open-air seat. Lucky enough to have sunshine for part of the day, the driving tour past Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abby, Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden and over both Westminster and Tower

Interactive Customer Evaluation (ICE) surveys submitted by the patients seen at NBHC Capodichino boast a robust satisfaction rating of 99 percent. These surveys are filled with comments such as, “highly respectful and professional staff,” “their informative patient care speaks for itself” and "best service I've ever had in my 16 years in the Navy." Currently, there are over 1,700 active duty members that receive medical care at NBHC Capodichino. The clinic offers many services, from the face-to-face appointment scheduling by Helen Carbonaro, to the one-stop Periodic Health Assessment (PHA) process, which allows patients to update their medical readiness in one visit. The healthcare services offered at NBHC Capodichino include Primary Care, Military Physicals, Occupational Health, Preventive Medicine, Immunizations, General Dentistry, Radiology, Laboratory, and Pharmacy. The clinic aims to promote healthier lifestyles by offering a variety of health programs, such as the Health 2 Health (H2H) Program and Clean Week. Both of these programs provide incentives to Sailors to lead a healthier lifestyle. The H2H program provides participants with three different ways to follow their dieting and physical training. One H2H program participant lost 33 pounds and dramatically improved blood pressure levels in just two months by using one of the recommended nutritional techniques. This technique, known as "juicing," encourages participants to increase their fruit and vegetable intake by liquefying them through a juicing blender. During the recent Clean Week, nutritional documentary films were on display in the patient lobby. "Clean Week has revolutionized the way we think about what we eat and has immensely improved the diets of the commands," Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class [FMF] Cave. Information Technician 1st Class Shawn Holder watched a film that was included in Clean Week. He used a juicer to blend his fruits and vegetables and drink them. The end result was a loss of 34 lbs. in about 2 months. After seeing the results IT1 Holder and I are currently working on a new project titled 'Clean Class'. This class is a fun modern approach to leading a healthier and happier lifestyle. Wellness classes are offered every other Wednesday (by appointment) and provide guidance to help maintain a strong, healthy heart through proper diet. NBHC Capodichino's four healthcare teams placed first overall in the Department of Defense’s “Crews into Shape” program. An outstanding 72 percent of clinic staff participated in the H2H program. NBHC Capodichino's Dental Department staff received high praise during the Medical Inspector General (MEDIG) Inspection in March in recognition of their exceptional patient care processes and the meticulous operation of their Central Sterilization Room. Praise was not only levied upon NBHC Capodichino's Dental Department but also on the clinic overall. Medical Inspector General Capt. Celia Horton proclaimed Naval Hospital Naples and NBHC Capodichino as in "the top 1 percent of all commands I have surveyed." Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with the exception of 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Thursday afternoons when the Clinic is closed for staff training.

Bridge, was quick way to see London’s busiest highlights comSurprisingly partmentalized. relaxing, it was pleasant to sit above the foot traffic and take in the bustle of London’s heart without the challenge of navigating it on foot or from the Underground. After four days with the same itinerary as millions of others, I felt like some of the city I’d actually seen for the first time, and a different perspective. As it turned out, it was easy to enjoy London through the wide-eyes of a tourist.

91-year-old Sailor Graduates Boot Camp By Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) Public Affairs
World War II veteran and Battle of Midway survivor, Mr. Joe Sanes, Wilmette, Ill., became an honorary graduate of Recruit Training Command (RTC) here at Naval Station Great Lakes, more than 70 years after enlisting in the Navy, June 14. Sanes enlisted in the Navy on Nov. 14, 1941, and attended boot camp at Great Lakes. However, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, four weeks into boot camp, Sanes was immediately assigned to the destroyer USS Hammann (DD 412). He never graduated.
During the Pass-In-Review (PIR) recruit graduation ceremony, Capt. John Dye, commanding officer of RTC, recognized Sanes' service, presented him with an honorary graduation certificate and designated him an honor graduate of the PIR. "When we say the Sailor's Creed, when we say the words 'I represent the fighting spirit of the Navy and those who have gone before me to defend freedom and democracy around the world,' we are talking about men like Mr. Joe Sanes," said Dye to the new Sailors their friends and family members. During the ceremony, nine divisions comprised of 701 Sailors, or 702 including Sanes, graduated from RTC, the Navy's only boot camp. The ceremony was attended by more than 1,500 friends and family, including Libby Sanes, Joe's wife of 65 years. "After 72 years, I am proud and happy to be a part of this graduation," said Joe. "The Sailors today are better looking than the Sailors of my time. I was impressed with what I saw today. I am sure the graduations back in 1941 wouldn't have been anywhere close to this." Joe was aboard Hammann during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Hammann helped rescue more than 500 Sailors from the crippled USS Lexington (CV 2). On June 6, 1942 during the battle of Midway, Hammann was assisting USS Yorktown (CV 5) recovery after the carrier had been damaged during the battle. While participating in a defensive screen of Yorktown, Hammann was struck by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine and
sank in less than four minutes. Seventy-nine enlisted crew members died along with 10 of the 14 officers. "My battle station was on the port side, I saw the torpedoes coming at the ship. I was in water up to my ankles by the time I got to the deck," said Joe. "Most of the casualties came when the Hammann exploded underwater after she sank. I was lucky. The survivors are not the heroes. The real heroes are the ones who never came back." Joe also took part in the Solomon Islands Campaign, the Aleutian Islands Campaign, and the Mariana Islands Campaign, before receiving an honorable discharge on Nov. 14, 1947. "The first thing the Navy Taught me was discipline," said Joe. "It's very important in battle. Everyone has to be coordinated; everyone has to do their job. Without discipline there will be failure." Sanes participates in speaking engagements throughout the country educating the public, ensuring the legacy of Naval heritage, and honoring his fallen shipmates. RTC is overseen by Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), commanded by Rear Admiral Dee L. Mewbourne. RTC trains more than 35,000 volunteers annually, transforming civilians into basically trained Sailors. During the summer, many people like to spend time outside in the sun for work, physical fitness, and recreational activities. When doing so, please remember overexposure to the heat can cause heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion or most serious, heat stroke. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) Index is the most effective means of predicting heat stress effects on the human body. The WBGT is a composite temperature developed in 1956 by the U.S. Marine Corps to reduce heat stress injuries in recruits and is used to estimate the effect of temperature, humidity, wind chill, and radiant heat. The WBGT is derived from a formula that takes the sum of 70 percent of the natural wet-bulb tem-

perature, 20 percent globe thermometer temperature (radiant heat), and 10 percent dry bulb temperature (actual air temperature). During summer months, heat related injuries are more likely to occur when the WBGT readings rise to 75 degrees Fahrenheit and above. This is why appropriate individual and unit physical training (PT) protocols should be instituted and adhered to. The U.S. Naval Hospital Naples has automated heat-stress systems (AHSS) located at the Navy Support Site and at the Branch Health Clinic at Navy Support Activity Capodichino. The AHSS collects and analyzes WBGT data 24 hours a day now through Sept. 30, 2013. In the event of unseasonably warm weather, U.S. Naval Hospital Naples will continue monitoring after Sept. 30. Current heat stress/heat flag conditions, WBGT Index readings and additional information are available through the U.S. Naval Hospital Naples’ website at www.med.navy.mil/sites/napoli.

What should I do to keep my skin safe during the warm summer months? Always practice safe sun! Protect your skin- no matter what skin type all year around. Never is this more important than during the warm summer months when people tend to wear less clothing. Many people look forward to the first warm day of the year, so they can go to the beach and get some color. But it is very important to always use sunscreen. Being tan may be cool, but it poses many risks. Intense, periodic exposure to ultraviolet light is strongly linked to melanoma, deadly skin cancer. Indoor tanning, like tanning beds, is also very unhealthy. Just one indoor tanning session increases your risk for melanoma by 20 percent. It is also very important to protect children of all skin types, but especially blondes, redheads, and children who have fair skin and freckle easily. During the hours that the sun is brightest 11am to 3pm, sunscreen should be reapplied frequently. It is also recommended to wear hats and to cover exposed skin, especially during outdoor recess or long days at the beach. No matter what the age, make sure all surfaces of the skin are covered with sunscreen. The most frequently forgotten areas are the tips of the ears, the nape of the neck, the tops of the feet and the back of the legs. You should also check to make sure that the sunscreen has not expired, as it loses its effectiveness. If you have frequent sunburns, or lots of irregularly shaped moles, it is recommended to get a yearly skin exam by your Primary Care Manager. Service members stationed at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples conduct a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Stand-down at the Capodichino base theater, June 18. The stand down is part of a larger SAPR stand down directed by the Secretary of Defense for all service members and Department of Defense civilian employees in the military. Capt. Eric Gardner, chief of staff of Navy Region Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia, was one of those facilitating the train-
ing and said that sexual assault is a problem in today’s Navy and goes against the Department of the Navy (DoN) core values and standards. “This stand down is all about preserving Navy culture and the kind of Navy we want to have, and it is up to us to decide how we want our Navy to be,” said Rear Adm. Anthony E. Gaiani, commander, Navy Region Europe, commander Maritime Air Naples. “The way we’ll do this is by understanding what sexual assault is and how we can prevent it.” The training in the theater stepped out from traditional slide presentations, keeping them to a
minimum, and instead focused on engaging audience participation through the discussion of the importance of SAPR and to emphasize the importance of fostering a climate of dignity and respect in the Navy. Gardner said that the DoN has created several training programs in order to raise awareness of sexual assault such as SAPR-Fleet, training for E-6 and below, SAPR-Leadership, training for E-7 and above, and SAPRGMTK, also training for E-7 and above. These programs ensure every Sailor throughout the fleet is properly informed about what sexual assault is and how it can be prevented.

Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. In the Spotlight HMSN CRYSTAL CUMMINGS Originally from Montgomery, Alabama, HMSN Crystal Cummings is a highly motivated Sailor and skilled Surgical Technician. After first being assigned to the Main Operating Room eight months ago, Cummings was recently hand selected to fill a staffing gap in the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Clinic. Cummings has demonstrated true flexibility and teamwork during the transition and is quickly developing her clinical skills, proving herself a key asset to the ENT Clinic. Her new duties include temporary assignments to Rota, Spain and Sigonella, Italy to assist the Otolaryngologist during the delivery of specialty medical care that would otherwise be limited for patient living in those areas. Outside the ENT Clinic, Cummings is an active member of the Junior Enlisted Association and her hobbies include traveling, music and hiking. “It is such a privilege to be part of such a team of professionals who are dedicated to providing outstanding patient care to all of our beneficiaries. In addition to free weights and machines, MWR Fitness established classes to promote the improvement of fitness, mood and overall health for service members, DOD civilians and their dependents. “The benefits of taking these classes is to improve overall fitness, stamina, weight loss and also increase in strength and muscle tone,” said Sara

Free and prepaid group exercise classes are offered at The FitZone including Super G.A.G., a legs, abs and glute program, Zumba, the worldrenowned aerobic workout program using music, Fit Boxe, a high intensity program using boxing techniques, Fit Pump, a program to work major muscle groups using weights, X Cardio Fit and Fit Corps, total body workout that involves cardio and calisthenics, Indoor Cycling, pilates and yoga. “We have different classes for the military here like spinning, total body workouts, fit pump, and pilates and yoga,” said Donatella Carafa, professional trainer for the yoga and pilate class. “We have all these
classes because of the good facilities we have.” MWR Fitness also makes group exercise classes available at NSA Naples Support Site, and Carney Park.
