Service members from the U.S. and Italy came together during a Memorial Day ceremony at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Nettuno, Italy, May 27. Adm. Bruce. W. Clingan, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, and commander, Allied Joint Force Command Naples, described how inspiring the actions of the fallen heroes enshrined at the cemetery were and how they should be remembered. “The nearly 8,000 men and women buried in this beautiful cemetery and thousands more like them believed in, fought for, and died for ideals that we still cherish today,” said Clingan. “Their actions, some heroic, some mundane, all selfless, achieved a victorious end to the horrific battles of World War II.” U.S. Ambassador to Italy David Thorne, also a guest speaker, encouraged the attendees to remember not just the sacrifices, but the reasons for their sacrifices. “On memorial day, we remember those we have lost, not only for what they fought for but who they were, proud Americans, often far-tooyoung, guided by deep and

abiding love for their families, for each other, and their country,” said Thorne. “Our debt to them is one we can never fully repay, but we can honor their sacrifice and strive to be a nation equal to their example.”

During the ceremony, Clingan joined Italian and U.S. dignitaries in a wreathlaying ceremony, honoring the 7,861 buried and the 3,095 still missing. “Let us never forget those who have given and those who

are given to the noblest of causes. May their sacrifices and heroism continue to inspire us to rise up in the face of adversity, to act boldly in times of need and to give selflessly in the pursuit of enduring freedom,” said Clingan

Principal’s Note to Seniors of 2013

Principal Duane Werner, Naples High School

Seniors of 2013! The end is near. Though actually, you are just beginning on the road to adulthood. There have been many milestones in your high school years and there are many more that you will pass as you move forward. It has been my pleasure to be the principal at Naples High School this year and to be a part of what you have accomplished. You have represented yourself, your family, our community, and our school well as future members of a truly global society. The accomplishments of your senior year and of your high school career will be a part of your legacy. You have helped shape Naples High School. Now the road widens; there will be more responsibilities, more work, and your opportunities are limitless as you take that road leading to being a citizen of the 21st Century workforce. Your parents and teachers have worked to provide you with the tools to make a huge impact on our society. The challenge is there; embrace it, accept the challenge, work towards making a difference in society. I believe in you and that you will make a difference! Remember your high school days. As a freshman you were probably unsure what that first year would be like. You were no longer the ‘new kid’ as a sophomore, but still learning the ropes. When you were a junior you started thinking about ‘life after high school’ when you and your parents were planning ACT and SAT test dates. As a senior, the question ‘where will I go next year’ came up, do I have a date for Homecoming, and where will the prom be held? You also had other decisions to make: college, job, military, what to do next year? Oh, almost forgot, seniors were allowed off campus for lunch! Some of the highlights of this year include: Model United Nations in Prague, Czech Republic; our Academic Games entry traveling to Hambachtal, Germany; the marching band traveling to Baumholder, Germany; and performing at the Super 6 Football championships. Do not forget the memory of being in the European championship football game, the championship basketball game, the cross-country run in the snow at the European championships with the boys coming in second, or the championship by the girls team on the Baumholder course. Remember the girls’ volleyball team taking on all-comers for championship honors in Ramstein, Germany. Not to be outdone, the girls’ soccer team claimed another European title, the softball team claimed third place in Europe, and the baseball team won its first European title. We also had teams travel to Germany for Europe-wide competition in culinary arts, music, and the STEMposium. What a year to remember. You were part of it! You have some great memories of Naples High School and our host nation community. Don’t forget your roots as you prepare for the future. Proud to be and always a ‘Wildcat’! I wish you the best.

In a couple of weeks, American dads will be celebrated for the love and bond they share with their families. Make them feel special with gifts they would enjoy. Looking beyond the usual special cards and neckties, consider the events below to bring pleasant treats for the celebrants. Be aware though that some exciting events are scheduled this weekend only that would make for great pre-Father’s Day ideas.

West Side Story High energy American production set to enliven San Carlo Theater Inspired by Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” the American Broadway classic combines the talents of author Arthur Laurents, choreographer

Jerome Robbins, lyricist Stephen Sondheim and composer Leonard Bernstein. BB Promotion Company, in colwith Sundance laboration Productions, Inc. of New York, will stage the musical June 2228 at the renowned 18th century Neapolitan venue. Set in the 1950s in New York, the work recounts the gripping rivalry between two New York teenage gangs (the PolishAmerican Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks) along with the love story between Tony of the Jets and Maria, sister of the Sharks’ leader. Critics cite the work as a comment on the rise of juvenile delinquency and racial tensions in the U.S. at the time. Lively dance scenes along with memorable and romantic songs such as “Maria,” “America,” “Tonight,” “Somewhere,” and “One Hand, One Heart” have helped earn its world acclaim.

Italy and Beyond Lou Freed is a regular contributing culture and travel columnist for Panorama. She has traveled and cruised Lou Freed extensively in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Her monthly column offers cultural and travel insights locally and further afield.

The musical debuted to rave reviews in 1957 on Broadway and was made into a film in 1961, winning ten Academy Awards out of eleven nominations, including Best Picture. Performances will run through June 28. For bookings and details, visit http://www.teatrosancarlo.it/ or call 081-7972331.

Nasty Back talk From Love and Logic Institute, Inc. Once there was a mom who walked out of the teacher's room after a long discussion about her son's lack of motivation and failure to do homework. When she told him to put on his coat, he snapped, "I don't have to. It's not cold." She said. "I mean it young man. You listen to me!" He said, "Oh, all right. I'll do it, but you are a retard!" She said, "Don't you talk to me like that. You show a little respect young man!" Turning to the teacher, the mom asked, "What do I do with this kid?" The teacher empathized with mom and told her about having some of the same problems before learning about Love and Logic. She told her how she was tempted to try to solve all the problems immediately but started to make progress when she tried to use only one skill at a time. She told mom how she started dealing with back talk by refusing to react. Every time her son said something nasty she simply said, "Bad decision. I'll have to do something about that after I cool down." That was her mantra. After cooling down, she waited for him to ask for something. When he did, she delivered her other mantra, "I'm happy to do the things you want when I feel respected," and he didn't get what he wanted. He hated the fact that she always said the same thing. The teacher went on to say that for a while, those were the only changes she made with her parenting. But it got her off to a great start and life changed for the better.

JFC Naples Team Trains NCOs from Serbia By Master Sgt. Justin Philips, JFC Naples

The Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Naples Joint Mobile Training Team (JMTT) trained 26 noncommissioned officers (NCO) from a Serbian military police platoon at an army base near Bujanovac, Serbia, May 13-17. This was JMTT’s third mission this year in support of NATO’s Partnership for Peace program—which directly supports one of JFC’s key tasks of engaging with partners. The main mission of the team is to travel into non-NATO countries and introduce a different kind of training to their armed forces. The overall program is led by the JFC Command Sgt. Maj. Manfred Jerabek. Under the leadership of U.K. Warrant Officer Ian Venables, a team of instructors travelled four hours from Belgrade, Serbia and facilitated classroom-based leadership training. The training material covered various NCO development and leadership topics; including ethics, communication and counseling. The JMTT training material doesn't include any country-specific doctrine and is a based on the NATO School and Swiss NCO School’s leadership course. “We had a great team deploy on this mission

and we were able to provide a wide range of experience, culture, and viewpoints to our audience,” said Venables. “Additionally, we met some really experienced and professional NCO’s in Serbia. The Serbian military were great hosts and I look forward to returning soon.” Venables’ team members included French Navy Chief Petty Officer Francois Monatte, Canadian Army Sgt. Rob Blanch, U.S. Navy Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Brian Smith and German Army Sgt. Joshua Passaro. The training location was chosen due to its importance to the Serbian military. At the grand opening in 2009, President Boris Tadić of Serbia stated that the base is located strategically, and offers key guarantees for security and peace in the south of Serbia. During the graduation, the base deputy commander thanked the team for their hard work and professionalism. The Naples team successfully delivered the training content, but more importantly they established relationships and shared ideas with other NCOs from a valuable partner country. Overall, the Naples team graduated 26 Serbian NCOs and fulfilled the motto of the JMTT program: "We train our own!"

Nominations Sought for Bob Feller Act of Valor Award By MC2 Jesse L. Dick, Navy Office of Community Outreach Nominations are currently being sought from the Navy's chief petty officer community for the Inaugural Bob Feller Act of Valor award. Established by the Bob Feller Act of Valor Foundation, the prestigious award is named in honor of Major League Baseball pitcher, National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, and Navy veteran Bob Feller. This unique award is intended to recognize a representative from three critical areas of Mr. Feller's life: his baseball career, his service as a Navy chief petty officer, and his enshrinement in the Hall of Fame. As such, the award will be presented to one Major League Baseball player, one Navy chief petty officer, and one member of the Hall of Fame on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2013, at the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. "It is important to recognize Bob Feller's unselfish devotion to our nation and Navy," said Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Mike Stevens. "He made the personal choice to give up money and fame for the service of others and placed himself in harm's way with his shipmates during a time of war. The chief petty officer selected for the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award will embody these same traits." In recognition of Mr. Feller's significant accomplishment in attaining the rank of chief petty officer, nominees must be a chief petty officer (E-7 only), active or reserve, must be outstanding military professionals, and must embody the Navy's core values of honor, courage, and commitment. Mr. Feller enlisted in the Navy shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor while he was with the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first American professional athlete to enlist. He served on the battleship USS ALABAMA (BB-60), and while doing so, the ship fought in both World War II theaters and earned eight battle stars. Mr. Feller was released from active duty achieving the rank of chief petty officer, and is the only chief petty officer in the Hall of Fame. Nominations must be submitted to the Navy Office of Community Outreach by June 17. For more information on eligibility requirements and the selection process, see NAVADMIN 138/13.

Navy Researchers Push to Combat Hearing Loss By Eric Beidel, Office of Naval Research

As more military service members report hearing loss, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) is hosting nationwide experts on how to combat the issue, May 29. Sponsored by ONR's Warfighter Performance Department, and coinciding with Better Hearing and Speech Month, the meeting will feature academic and military health professionals dedicated to finding solutions to this most common disability among veterans. "Hearing preservation is not just about ear plugs," said Kurt Yankaskas, ONR Noise-Induced Hearing Loss program manager. "We're looking at everything from making stuff quieter to better operational hearing protection as we go forward in understanding this complex issue." Daily, Sailors and Marines work on aircraft carriers or in cockpits, engine rooms and other locations where noise levels are in excess of the effectiveness of current hearing protection devices. Similar situations have contributed to an increase in auditory problems across the military. In its most recent report, the Veterans Administration (VA) estimated that more than 1.5 million veterans, almost double the number from 2006, were receiving compensation for hearing loss and tinnitus, typified by ringing in the ears. In 2011, the VA reported nearly 150,000 new cases of hearing loss and tinnitus, over three times the number for post-traumatic stress disorder. ONR and its research partners are attacking the problem from different angles with a focus on: • Tailoring hearing protection devices to individual users • Measuring noise exposure in real time • Developing pharmaceuticals to maintain and restore hearing Extensive modeling and simulation can provide researchers today with a better understanding of how to measure noise and determine the susceptibility of individuals to hearing loss and tinnitus. Researchers are seeking a way to regenerate damaged hair cells in the cochlea, a spiral-shaped part of the inner hear, essential for hearing. A challenge is to link these ear sensors to auditory nerves that carry messages to the central hearing processing center in the brain. "Early investment from ONR proved that timely delivery of antioxidant compounds helps to mitigate the effect of noise exposure," said Dr. Rick Rogers, Harvard School of Public Health scientist. Rogers has worked with ONR to investigate the potential for inhaled antioxidants to protect against noise-induced hearing loss in theater. "We are hopeful that we may be able to reduce or reverse these symptoms in the near future," he said. Studies by ONR and other entities indicate that medicine already approved by the Food and Drug Administration could reverse the effects of both noise-induced hearing loss and mild traumatic brain injury symptoms, including dizziness and memory loss. "Researchers across the Navy and other services are making significant strides in gaining a better understanding of these critical issues," Yankaskas said. "It only makes sense that we work together more closely to accomplish our goal, which ultimately is the welfare of our warfighters." ONR provides the science and technology necessary to maintain the Navy and Marine Corps' technological advantage. Through its affiliates, ONR is a leader in science and technology with engagement in 50 states, 70 countries, 1,035 institutions of higher learning and 914 industry partners. ONR employs approximately 1,400 people, comprising uniformed, civilian and contract personnel, with additional employees at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C.

Learning the Baby Basics By MC3 Caitlin Feddersen, Navy Public Affairs Support ElementEast Detachment Europe

The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) aboard Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples held a Baby Basics class to help parents prepare for their new arrivals, May 16. The free class covered various topics and hands-on training for the first six weeks of a baby’s life including swaddling, bathing, diaper changing and what to expect after birth. “It was a very informative class, I really enjoyed the hands-on portion,” said Culinary Specialist 1st Class Jorge Martinez. “The nurses are full of knowledge and everything they covered is useful.” Baby Basics has been offered at NSA Naples since 2007 and is open to civilians

and all military personnel, including NATO. It takes place on the third Thursday of every month. For those interested who are unable to attend, NMCRS also offers one-on-one classes that cover the same topics as the Baby Basics class. “You can’t expect that parents are going to retain every little bit of information we give them, because we present a lot,” said Registered Nurse Ann Donohue, NMCRS visiting nurse and class facilitator. “But I honestly have to say that I’ve noticed over the years with parents that have attended this class and the

other classes available that they are better prepared simply because of the information they are given through the classes.” In addition to the class, NMCRS also has a visiting nurse program that provides in-home visits for new parents after the birth of their baby to offer assistance and answer any additional questions they may have. NMCRS also offers a Budget for Baby class that help families prepare for their new arrival. For more information about upcoming classes or to sign up, call DSN: 626-6164.

Sonya Rayford Cage, spouse of Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Naples service member Maj. Ernest Cage, was awarded the 2013 Joan Orr Air Force Spouse of the Year for the U.S. Air Force for her outstanding support to local military personnel and their families. This honor follows closely on the heels of her U.S. Air Force NATO spouse of the year award. "To me, the Joan Orr award is recognition of serving others within your community,” explained Mrs. Cage. “It is a pleasure and an honor to serve our Air Force and NATO communities. Serving the families is a team effort. I accept this award on behalf of all the spouses. They volunteered their time and talents to ensure our Air Force families’ needs are met.” During the last year, she spent countless hours supporting the U.S. Air Force element, as the U.S. Air Force Key Spouse, and the JFC Naples community with everything from welcoming new members to supporting multiple fundraisers for the local and military community. Her leadership and volunteer efforts were pivotal in creating a positive environment for families. As the Air Force liaison to the Naples Overseas Spouses Club, she helped guide the Thrift Store, which funded $40,000 in scholarships in 2012. Cage stated that she did not accomplish this award alone. She explained, "I would encourage all spouses to get involved, to make a difference no matter how big or small. This great military journey we are all on has its ups and downs for sure, but together we are stronger - stronger together.” Another of her main contributions was creating a pre-deployment family support program, which provides pivotal information to the dependents in the Naples area while their spouse is deployed. JFC Naples leadership understands the importance of having the support of the service member’s family. This is a key component to the success of the JFC Naples deployable warfighting headquarters concept. “Sonya sees the role of a Key Spouse as an opportunity to continue serving her country and the Air Force by taking care of families,” said Maj. Gen. Garry Dean, Director of Operations at JFC Naples. “They are near and dear to her heart and she works tireless striving to be a resource of information and most of all a source of support. She is a valuable member of our community and we are thankful for her efforts in providing top-notch support to our military families.” “I am ecstatic and extremely proud of my daughter-in-law,” said Bessie Cage, Sonya Cage’s mother-in-law. “What an honor to be recognized as the prestigious Air Force Joan Orr Spouse of the Year. I am a firm believer that with desire, discipline and dedication, one can accomplish great things.” The Air Force Association will present the award to Cage in September at the 2013 Air & Space Conference and Technology Exposition in National Harbor, Md.

The honeymoon is over. Does it need to be this hard to find an open pizza place in Italy? Shouldn't that be an oxymoron? Why are all the Punto Blue conveniently located after you pay the toll? Has anybody heard of a large cup of coffee? Why do we need to go all around the AutoGrill store in order to exit? It has less to do with Italy and more to do with culture shock. Once upon a time we all dreamt in cinematic scenery about the Tuscan sun, leisurally drives along the Amalfi Coast, quick and spontaneous trips to the local pizza place. Just enjoying the simple life, strolling along epic sceneries and throwing around a few buongiornos along the way. Next thing we know we are waiting at "the bridge" watching a parade of strikers, trying to figure out how our cellphone is being billed and thinking about the whereabouts of that package we ordered a few weeks back from the U.S. Do not even think about calling your friends from back home to complain. After all, we are in Italy! For many of us the honeymoon is wearing off. We're no longer interested to enjoy, give, try and mingle. We just want to do life, the simple way. We aspire to fly under the radar and just go from one transaction to the next. The problem is that this kind of “transactional” living isn't transformational. Once the honeymoon

stage is over and after this disenchanting period has passed, we move on to the acceptance and adaptation stage. During this stage we start feeling like ourselves again. We are able to appreciate the cultural differences, and all of a sudden we feel more confident in ourselves and our surroundings. It is through acceptance and adaptation that we can regain our stronger and healthier self. While feeling disoriented is natural, it does take intentionality to move on to a better reality. I believe honeymoons are for tourists. We all have the gift and opportunity to work and live here in Italy. Let the outsiders come and glut on the sweets, while we have the permission to enjoy the full Italian meal. A better you, a better me, is waiting around the corner. Thank you God for placing us in such a beautiful, colorful and memorable country. It's time... di mangiare.

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Contact Connie Henderson, RLSO EURAFSWA liaison advisor, at 081-5684639 for more information.

NOSC Awards 2013-2014 Scholarship Recipients By MC1 Travis Simmons, NSA Naples Public Affairs

The Naples Overseas Support Club (NOSC) congratulated seven undergraduate and graduate scholarship recipients during a ceremony at the Support Site Community Center of Naval Support Activity Naples, May 28. NOSC awarded more than $38,000 in 20132014 scholarship funds to 17 members from the Naples military community. The 10 Naples High School scholarship recipients are scheduled to be awarded June 4 during the Senior Recognition Ceremony. “The scholarship funds are comprised from donations that are resold to the community at the club’s Thrift Store, and at events in the form of raffles,” said Rachel Cornette, NOSC scholarship chairperson. The NOSC Thrift Store located at the Support Site is operated by volunteers and

makes the largest portion of the money used for scholarships, which averaged out to $2,400 per person this year. Community members who shop at or donate their materials to the club’s store make an impact on money raised by the NOSC. “With our current economic climate, it can be a challenge to pay for school,” said Cornette. “NOSC is thrilled to be able to help students achieve their dreams.” “This year’s applicants were a talented and diverse group,” said Cornette. “The scoring committee used criteria that evaluated each applicant’s essay, GPA, volunteer time, awards, employment and interests in order to select our winners.” The NOSC scholarship committee received 69 applications this year. For more information on the scholarship or other club activities, visit www.noscitaly.com.

It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and highoctane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles. VIL DEAD, R, Cast: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore. Horror, 91 min.
