Captain’s Corner Today, we bid a fond farewell to Admiral Frank and Mrs. Anita Pandolfe and welcome Admiral Phil and Mrs. Tracy Davidson. I have been privileged to have served with both of these fine leaders in the past. While in squadron command, I served with Admiral Pandolfe while he was a Carrier Strike Group Commander. I developed a deep respect and admiration for the man and his superb leadership that has only been reinforced during his many months in Naples. A true warfigher who decisively and successfully led naval forces through numerous highly successful operations in Europe and Africa, he is an intelligent and compassionate leader who always placed Sailor and family welfare at the top of his concerns. Anita Pandolfe has worked tirelessly to support our Sailors and their families and has dedicated countless hours volunteering and improving our community through such fine organizations as the NOSC and ASC. Anita – a sincere thanks from all those throughout this community that you have worked so tirelessly to serve. You have set the standard during your time in Naples and your devotion and selflessness are an example to us all. It is with a heavy heart that the community wishes Admiral and Mrs. Anita Pandolfe fair winds and following seas. I hope our paths will cross again. Admiral and Mrs. Tracy Davidson – welcome to Naples. We wish you all the best as you undertake this challenging, yet rewarding, assignment. Every October, we are given the opportunity to come together as a Navy to celebrate our birthday at the Navy Ball. These evenings provide a wonderful chance to celebrate our Navy’s heritage and enjoy a wonderful night with our shipmates and significant others. The Navy Ball Committee labors all year long to raise money and organize this superb event on behalf our Sailors. I myself had never attended a Navy Ball before arriving in Naples, and have thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie and experience. I would encourage all who have never had the opportunity to consider attending this year’s ball on Oct. 26. This event has sold out for the past two years and, while tickets are still on sale, they are going quickly with nearly two thirds sold in the first two weeks. If you want to share in this great experience, don’t wait to get your tickets, which can be purchased on the Capo spine daily from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ticket prices are as follows: (E1-E3/GS1-GS3) €25, (E4-E6/GS4-GS6/UA7-UA4) €35, (E7-E9/O1-O3/GS7-GS12/UA3UA2) €45, (O4/O5/GS13-GS14/UA-1) €50, (O6+/GS15+) €60. Besides the upcoming Navy ball, this fall has been a great season for Wildcat sports at Naples Middle/High School. The varsity football team is currently seeded in 4th place in the playoffs, with one game remaining at Aviano this weekend. All of our other sports teams will be joining them up north, including the 8-0 boys’ volleyball team. In two matches against two different schools last weekend, they only lost one set. Girls’ volleyball likewise maintains a winning season at 6-2. Boys and girls cross country are both undefeated, and most runners have already qualified for the European Championships. I couldn’t be prouder of these fine young men and women, pushing themselves on behalf of their teams and NHS. There are limited chances to catch them at home: tennis on Oct. 19, and volleyball on the 26th. European Championships will follow, provided a budget has been put in place by Congress at that time. The governmental shut down has been difficult for the entire community. Many families have had to cut back and make hard choices during the last few months. Fortunately, we were able to welcome the overwhelming majority of our civilian staff back to work on Monday. I sincerely appreciate the patience and sacrifice of all affected personnel and welcome them all back to work. We sincerely appreciate the outstanding contributions of our DoD civilians, deeply regret the impact this situation has had on your families and are happy to have you back supporting our Navy’s efforts in this critical theater. As we head into this long weekend, whether you head to Aviano to see our Wildcat student athletes continue to dominate or stay in the local area, be sure to get out and enjoy the sites and the weather. Take care of one another and stay safe.

Support Site Recycling Program Support Site residents are requested to continue working to improve waste segregation. Wet waste, also known as compost, is being segregated at a very low rate and needs everyone's attention. Wet waste includes food, soiled paper towels, tea bags, biodegradable kitty litter, and any other biodegradable item. When taking waste to the collection sites, please only put non-recyclable waste or non-segregated waste in the black and green containers labeled "non-recyclable.” Placing the wrong type of waste in recyclable containers contaminates the waste and requires the entire container to be disposed of as non-recyclable.

Police Make Arrests in Money Stolen from ATMs Police arrested four men and one woman for their involvement in using fork-like devices to steal money from cash machines. They allegedly stole cash from ATM machines in the Liguria, Marche, Tuscany and Veneto regions before they were caught. They came up with a new method of getting money from an ATM. The withdrawal operates as normal and customers hear the cash being dispensed, however the cash is not actually ejected from the ATM because a criminal used a small device to retain it. Customers then walk away from the machine thinking it is out of order but once this happens, the criminal approaches the machine and removes his device and the cash. This method used by the criminals is known as “reversal cash trapping.” Thieves insert a fork-like device which opens the cash-dispensing slots, allowing them to trap more than the amount selected by the customer. The criminal can use his own card to get the cash going by selecting a minimal amount, but ending up with as much as €2,000 at a time. Police caught them up with the help of surveillance cameras.
Steve McCurry’s ‘Sensational Umbria’ Exhibit Opens in Assisi The beautiful Umbria region’s hills were photographed by the wellknown American photographer Steve McCurry. “Sensational Umbria” is the title of the exhibition on display in Assisi until midOctober with 100 photos capturing Assisi’s historic Basilica of San Francesco, the daily life of the monks who live and work in the Abbey of Sassovivo, and the medieval alleys of Spello. The show has been travelling to other Italian
cities including Milan, and Perugia’s famous Corso Vannucci for the 40th anniversary of the Umbrian Jazz festival during the summer. Umbria Regional President Marini stated McCurry’s stunning images are a strong vehicle for promoting the cultural and physical beauty of Umbria internationally. The exhibition will travel to the United States in November to be exhibited in New York City’s food headquarters of Eataly.
Gondolas in Venice Receiving GPS and License Plates Tourists in Venice will ride safer on the waterbus and gondolas starting Nov. 4 when each vessel will be fitted with a GPS tracking device, an external number plate and reflectors to make identification easier. Gondoliers will also have to have an identity card. The GPS will serve to control speed, but also to leave a trace of the journey they have carried out. There will also be forty surveillance cameras in place to make identification of rule breakers easier. These measures came after a German tourist was killed when the gondola carrying him and his family collided with a waterbus by the Rialto Bridge. In ten hours, there are around 1,600 boats, including 700 taxis and 200 gondolas, which pass under the bridge. Five people were placed under investigation over the crash.
Rome Exhibition Showcases Cezanne and His Impact The exhibition "Cezanne and the Italian Artists of the 20th century" opened in Rome’s Vittoriano Saturday and continues until February 2014. Curators gathered more than 100 works by modern French and Italian masters, including Cezanne, Morandi, and Sironi.
This exhibition aims to document the impact that Cezanne had upon his Italian contemporaries and the works they created - from avantgarde art to Futurists working during the 1930s. Works for the Rome show have been drawn from public and private collections around the world, including exceptional loans from the Hermitage in Russia's St. Petersburg, Paris' Musee d'Orsay, the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, the Foundation EG Bührle Collection in Zurich and the Art Museum of São Paulo in Brazil.
Two Bronze Statues Found in Tarquinia Two rare Etruscan bronze female statues dated back to the 4th and 5th centuries B.C. were found during an archeological dig in Tarquinia, a town located north of Rome. The two statues were found in a temple to Demeter along with other bronze and ivory artifacts, recounting the dramatic moments for the Gravisca sanctuary in 281 B.C. The last devotees, fearing the imminent arrival of the Roman army, buried all the precious religious objects to protect them from destruction. At a different site last week an intact 2,600-year-old tomb was found in the same town.
Financial Crisis Cancels Bologna Motor Show The 38th edition of the annual Bologna Motor Show has been cancelled this year because of the absence of auto manufacturers. The show was scheduled to take place from Dec. 3-9, but because of the Italian financial crisis which brought the car sales down by 50 percent, carmakers do not have the incentive to spend money to show new cars to a public that is not buying.

Support Site Playgrounds to receive upgrades From NSA Housing
The Support Site’s play areas are scheduled to receive upgrades on a rotational replacement plan beginning this fall. Many of the play areas show signs of wear and tear from constant usage. Some of them were installed as far back as 1995, during the beginning phases of Support Site construction. Housing secured funding last fiscal year and was able to award the replacement contract. The plan for the quality-of-life improvements is scheduled to begin in the coming months and conclude in March. Of the 21 play areas on base, 16 are Tot Lots, designed for children ages 2 through 5. There are also four Teen Areas, designed for older children. The last play area is the base Skate Park. The
project involves all of the above mentioned areas with the exception of two areas where no work is required. We thank the community for their patience during the upgrades and ask that they follow any closure signs put up in play areas. Work will begin with the Tot Lots, which will be completely redone to include the flooring and Gazebos. New equipment will then be installed at Teen Area 20, which is located near building 2007. The flooring and the fence at Teen Area 9, next to the tennis courts, will be replaced next. Finally, the entire Skate Park will be replaced to include the fence. Teen Area 5, next to building 2020, will be used as a storage area for both new and old equipment during the upgrades. Please contact Housing at DSN 629-4285 with any questions regarding the project.

Scorby holds a Master of Science in financial management from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Master of Arts in national security and strategic studies from the College of Command and Staff, U.S. Naval War College, and a Master of Arts in national resource strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Gaiani has commanded Navy Region EURAFSWA since August 2010. Under his leadership, he has managed an annual budget of more than $400 million during fiscally challenging times; leading environmental stewardship projects that have resulted in significantly improved resource management, while actively engaging families, government officials and community leaders and strengthening key relationships in the Navy's critically important Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia operating environment. "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve
with the men and women, military and civilians, of Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia," said Gaiani. "For the past three years, we have worked together to effectively provide world-class shore service and support for our maritime strategy, for four Combatant Commanders and forces both ashore and at sea in some of the most challenging areas of the world. I am very proud of what we have accomplished as a team." Gaiani was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal during the ceremony, for his exceptional leadership and for 30 years faithful military service. Gaiani will retire from naval service. Scorby will oversee a workforce of more than 4,000 host nation employees, U.S. employees and military members responsible for providing efficient and effective shore service support to U.S. and allied forces in the Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia area of responsibility.
Take Charge in Fight Against Breast Cancer by HM1 Rachele Almaraz, Certified Mammography Technician, USNH Naples
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Radiology Department at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples has a vested interest in ensuring that the Naples community is well informed about the latest breast cancer screening recommendations. The American Cancer Society states that one in eight U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. A woman’s risk doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Fifteen percent of women who get breast cancer have a family history of the disease. As important as family history is, the statistics imply that 85 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer will have no family history of the disease. What can women do to fight these odds? Be proactive! First, start with regular breast self-exams. It is important to become familiar with the way your breasts normally look and feel. Knowing what is normal for you may help to identify even small changes in your breasts. Second, in addition to selfexams, have your primary care provider perform an annual
clinical breast exam. And finally, get a screening mammogram. Routine screening mammography recommendations vary between professional organizations. The American College of Radiology, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Cancer Society recommend screening mammography and clinical breast exams every year starting at the age of 40. Alternatively, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and American Academy of Family Physicians recommend screening every two years between the ages of 50 and 74. Both organizations also recommend that the decision to conduct screening mammography before age 50 should be individualized. “Ideally, the patient should schedule time with her health care provider in order to decide which option is best for her,” says Cmdr. David Jannotta, department head for Radiology. Screening mammography is the key to early detection and is effective in finding cancers that cannot yet be detected by physical exams. Despite advancements in technology, mammography can miss some types of breast cancer, especially those in a very early stage. Early breast cancers can only be seen when the radiologist compares the current mammogram to previous exams. That’s why it is
important for patients to handcarry their mammograms and the reason the mammography technologist will always ask for previous films. Many first-time mammogram patients ask, “Is it going to hurt?” The truth is that there is no definitive answer, as every woman is different and each patient has certain fears and doubts about the procedure. The exam may be slightly uncomfortable, but it should not be painful. As you are having your exam, remember that the mammography technologist is there to comfort you and answer any questions you may have. Most facilities, including the Mammography Unit at USNH Naples, are digital. What does that mean for the patient? With digital screenings, there are lower doses of radiation exposure, easier transfer of images to take to referral appointments or the next duty station and better overall pictures for radiologists to read. The hospital’s mammography program has met stringent quality guidelines and has been certified by both the American College of Radiology and the FDA. Take an active role in your health and schedule an appointment with your primary care provider in the Medical Home Port Clinic at DSN 629-6000, or commercially at 081-811-6000.

NSA Naples Launches Women’s Network
italian heritage celebration held at uSNh Naples
By MA3 Nadia Sylvestre
Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples launched the first meeting of the Women's Network Sept. 25, hosted by Lt. Liza Dougherty, Lt. Kate Ford and Command Master Chief Nancy Brewton, to establish meaningful, empowering personal and professional connections through education and communication. The NSA Naples Women's Network is a place for active duty women of all rates, ranks and grades to get together in an informal setting to facilitate discussion and encourage interaction, providing a safe environment to discuss real problems and questions. According to Brewton, starting the group is important “for networking and to get an idea of different rates and different areas of the country. We’ve all come from somewhere else and come from different duty stations, just to have some other people to connect with and have someone they can talk to. And part of it is that they aren’t in their chain of command and that will make it easier” to build those connections. Within the frame of the new network, women serving in Naples are able to come together to learn from one another, network, and gain valuable skills all in a comfortable environment over lunch. Some proposed topics for monthly meetings are Personal Appearance and Uniform Standards, Budgeting and Banking, Handling Harassment, Balancing Career and Family and Recognizing the Signs of Domestic Abuse. Not all commands have a network where junior Sailors are given the opportunity to build relationships with other Sailors in an environment outside of work. "I like the fact that you can be in a room with higher-ranking women. It makes approaching them feel less intimidating," said Master-at-Arms Seaman Kim Parks, whose first duty station is here at NSA Naples. That feeling is exactly what Dougherty and Ford were hoping to accomplish when they decided to start the Women’s Network together. “Groups like this are really great, especially for junior enlisted Sailors and we have a quite of few of them here,” said Dougherty. “We thought, wouldn’t it be a good idea to start this up at this location and give those junior females a good solid network to start their careers off?” “ I hope being in the Women’s Network gives junior Sailors the confidence they need to be a woman in the Navy, to handle themselves and succeed, and let them see what is possible,” said Ford. “I think it’s good for mentors because you learn to lead and you learn your people, you learn issues that are affecting everyone so that you are more prepared to be a leader.” Ford took her experience at the Naval Academy in a similar situation and molded it to effectively benefit the Sailors here at NSA Naples. “Ours wasn’t specifically an organization,” said Ford. “It was my plebe year at the Naval Academy and the upperclass women called us all in and were like this is how you wear your hair, do your makeup so you stay out of trouble; this is how you wear civvies and this is how you navigate the academy. It was really only a meeting or two but then you knew you could go to them for anything after that.” The opportunity for female Sailors to feel comfortable communicating with one another is one of the many reasons why NSA’s Commanding Officer, Capt. Scott Gray, was enthusiastic about starting the Women’s Network. “I thought wow, what a great idea. Not only is it a great idea, but it also definitely fills a need,” said Gray. “That’s great initiative of Lt. Dougherty, Lt. Ford and MACM Brewton, and I thought of the tremendous good that could come out of it.” Gray said he wants the network to be an outlet for the women involved and is looking for feedback if there are other things that can be done on base to meet needs not being filled. “My sincere wish is that in three months I will be asked to come back and talk to the Women’s Network, and we will be doing it in the theatre because there’s 150 or 250 ladies that are thoroughly immersed in the group and are enjoying it,” said Gray. “They’re being productive in that they are providing the community and the command very positive feedback and there are mentor relationships being developed between the junior and senior Sailors. And also, that it is bringing the junior Sailors together as well. It can be so good on so many levels and I am excited about it and I look forward to seeing it grow.” The next meeting’s topic, to be held Oct. 23, will be on navigating Legal Assistance. The meeting will be led by Lt. Alyssa Miller, Legal Assistance Attorney, JAG Corps. For additional information on the NSA Naples Women’s Network, contact MACM Nancy Brewton at 626-5396.

CNO Addresses a "Ready, Relevant and Capable" Navy Marine Corps Relief Society By MCC Julianne Metzger
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert spoke at the annual Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) International Conference Banquet at Ben Franklin Hall Oct. 2, in Potomac, Md. The theme of this year's event was, "Ready, Relevant and Capable." "You are a key indicator of how we can get ahead of issues our Sailors are having." said Greenert, addressing the audience. Through the analysis of NMCRS' counseling trends Navy leaders are able to anticipate issues before they become critical, said Greenert. Greenert thanked the society for the year-round assistance to Sailors, Marines and their families, as well as the society's recent assistance in providing counselors for victims of the Navy Yard Shootings. He also discussed the society's availability of financial support during the government shutdown. "It's hard to put into words what it means to us, for Sailors to know they'll be taken care of," said Greenert. "We need to continue to support and make sure we are providing support for our troops overseas." Throughout the government shutdown NMCRS offices are open during their regularly scheduled business hours. In the event of individual or family difficulty during the government shutdown, the NMCRS is ready to provide assistance to Marines, Sailors, military spouses and retirees with interest-free loans and grants to meet emerging needs. Over the first half of 2013, the NMCRS has served 31,922 clients with $21.5 million in interest free loans and grants. The society has also presented 3,000 gift bags to expectant military families and made 24,617 home visits to those in need. The NMCRS International Conference brings together its leadership from 51 offices around the world every three years. Attendees traveled from all around the world to take part in the event. "I think everyone in the room will agree that the last few days have been spent well," said Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Carl B. Jensen. "We're ready to go out there and serve Sailors, Marines and retirees in an even more enthusiastic manner, ever more efficient ... this year and every year after."

CNO, MCPON Talk to Sailors Worldwide for Navy Birthday From Defense Media Activity, Navy
The Chief of Naval Operations and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy took time to share the latest information on government shutdown and other fleet issues with Sailors, Navy civilians and their families Oct. 8, during a worldwide Navy birthday all hands call at the Defense Media Activity. Pay initiatives, sequestration impacts, and uniform updates were among the topics Adm. Jonathan Greenert and MCPON (AW/NAC) Mike Stevens talked about with a live studio audience, as well as Sailors from around the world via satellite and social media. An early question from the live audience pertained to the current evaluation system in the Navy. "I'm generally happy with it," said Greenert. “I would say what we need to do when we think about evaluating people is to be truthful and objective. There is a propensity to kind of make people feel good on evaluations when hard decisions have to be made. We need those decisions to be made at the deck plate level.” The Navy leaders started with the show by reenlisting 16 Sailors with their families and command leadership on hand. Then Sailors from Norfolk, San Diego, and Afghanistan were able to ask live video questions via satellite, and Sailors from USS Ramage (DDG 61) and USS Simpson (FFG 56) phoned in questions while on their current deployment in the 6th Fleet area of responsibility. Stevens took a question from Afghanistan regarding retention initiatives.
"Our numbers for retention show us we're getting it pretty close to right,” said Stevens. “However we're always going to look for ways to improve quality of life for our Sailors and quality of work.” "Even when you are in times of uncertainty, you have to be able to interact with your Sailors, that's why these type of forums are so important" said Cryptologic Technician (Collection) 1st Class Daniel Womack, Naval Information Operations Command, Maryland. "They [CNO and MCPON] are our one voice that has a direct line to our officials in government and people in Washington. They can voice our concerns to the politicians who make policy. "It shows that they really care about their Sailors," said Cryptologic Technician (Networks) 3rd Class Noah Seymour, Naval Information Operations Command, Maryland. "I think it's great that they want to take the time out of their schedule to answer some of the questions that their Sailors have.” Originally planned as a birthday celebration allhands call for the Navy's 238th birthday Oct. 13, Greenert determined it was more important than ever to carry on with the event despite an ongoing government shutdown to get up-to-date information on the shutdown to Navy audiences. This year's theme for the Navy birthday is "Defending America with Pride Since 1775." "It's really inspiring that the people out there in the fleet get to see their questions and concerns answered in a real time environment by our top Navy leaders," said Gunner's Mate 1st Class Matthew Carue, U.S. Naval Academy, Marksman Training Unit.

Naples Cross Country Teams Remain Undefeated By Isabella Lucy, Cross Country Team Captain
The Naples High School Cross Country team had victories against Vicenza, the American Overseas School of Rome and Aviano during their second home meet of the year. They traveled to Sigonella for a meet and hosted Marymount International and AOSR earlier in the season. The female frontrunner for Naples this weekend was senior Caroline Bracken with a personal record of 20:10, followed by Vicenzas’s Katie Claunch (21:47) and Naples middle school showcase runner Grace Vandelac (22:02). Not far behind for Naples was Isabela Melendez (22:09), senior Millie Chaston (22:41), Katye Cairns (22:48) and senior captain Isabella Lucy (22:58). Newcomers Amanda Ortega (23:36) and Kylie Beltz (24:30) gave strong performances as well. Despite the number of boys absent for the race due to the SAT, the boys’ competition was a high-paced race. Naples’ Jacob Gray (17:34), Xander Laney (17:54), and
Naples' Bret Baldwin and Sigonella's Able Ararso, two of the fastest runners in Italy, sprint to the finish during their Cross Country meet, Sept. 21. Baldwin won by a hair with a time of 17:42.21 to Ararso's 17:42.56. (Photo courtesy of Donald Williams)
AOSR’s Anan Mcharres (18:02) raced the grueling five kilometers swapping places by the time they reached the finish line. Naples’ Raekwon Sallywhite (18:15), AOSR’s Charles Blanchette (19:04), and Naples’ Nate Price (19:29) followed closely behind. The girls’ Division II champions kept their streak with a

victory of 25-41. Over the course of the season, Bracken’s high-speed times have catapulted her into the pool of top-ten female runners in all the divisions for Europe. In addition, the Naples boys’ team won against their northern foes 23-37-70, despite the absence of several key runners.
The top seven male and five female runners for both teams have qualified for Europeans, under the new qualifications put in place by DoDDs this year. This rule requires all female athletes must run under 25:00 on two different courses in order to go to Europeans. All male runners must accomplish the same in
under 21:00. The teams will travel to Aviano Air Base to race against Aviano and Vicenza for the last official race of the season. Two weeks later, they will travel to Baumholder, Germany to compete at Europeans and defend their 1st and 2nd place Division II titles

The NATO Lions Rugby Football Club hosted Amatori Napoli Rugby at Carney Park Saturday. Amatori Napoli are an Italian third division side with an interesting twist as their head coach, Marco Flumene, is an ex-Lion. Heavy rain stopped 1 hour before kick-off and the skies cleared. The conditions were perfect for a game of rugby. Amatori Napoli got off to a good start with a penalty on just 2 minutes; before the teams even had a chance to evaluate each other. It soon became obvious that the teams were actually very evenly matched. The Lions had the physical strength in the scrum and breakdown, but Amatori Napoli team were better drilled and more polished at each event. After just 6 Minutes the Lions centres Lt. Justin Kreutter and Petty Officer Shane Anderson were being destructive resulting in a penalty 35 meters out. The second half started as the first had finished, much good work in the middle of the park, plenty of movement of the ball and good ball carrying from both sides, but little chance to score. From a hard fought scrum on 54 minutes, Amatori Napoli had possession and set a very good platform to attack the Lions. The ball floated high from the fly-half to the centre and was intercepted by Anderson, allowing him a free 60m run-in under the posts. The Lions were now on the score board and Petty Officer Dave Greninger, playing scrum-half, slotted over the conversion. Now the score reflected more the equal game play at 7-11. With an inside pass to Petty Officer Edward Johnson again, he slipped a superb ball to the thundering Petty Officer Franco Garcia who broke through 2 tackles to put the ball down and score Lions' second try. Greninger slotted the conversion, on the whistle, to earn a well deserved, and most appropriate, draw 14 -14.

Lady Wildcats Emerge with 6-2 Record
By Marc Davis
By Victoria Krause
This weekend the Lady Wildcats played four exciting matches, two on Friday and two on Saturday. Friday, the Wildcat's first match was against the American Overseas School of Rome (AOSR) Falcons. The Lady Wildcats lost in three sets with scores of 19-25; 23-25; and 23-25, but these scores did not stop the Wildcats from scoring awesome digs and serving aces. Seniors Amilia Espiet and Victoria Krause led the team with serving aces with a total of 7. Krause and Espiet also defended the back row with an astounding 28 digs. These digs allowed setter Courtney Fukumitsu (sophomore) to provide 8 assists while Keylee Soto (junior) provided 7. That same night, the Lady Wildcats played the Vicenza Cougars and won in four sets with scores of 25-13; 2426; 25-14; and 25-14. Standouts included Junior Aundrea Hall with five serving aces, Fukumitsu and Krause were close behind with 3 each, and senior Carina Cusumano had two serving aces as well. Soto and Fukumitsu provided a total of 12 assists. The Lady Wildcats played two
time of 17.33 seconds,” said Higgins. “Her attention to stroke mechanics and hard work at practice are key to this incredible time improvement.” Tiger Shark Paul Patterson was chosen for the boys. “Paul is a returning NTS, competing with the team for his second season,” said Higgins. “His competitive spirit captured two first place finishes and had an overall time improvement of 6.32 seconds.” The Tiger Sharks will compete in Sigonella, Sicily this weekend for their annual “Double Dip” meet, which includes a regular EFSL meet on Saturday and a Pentathlon on Sunday.

games Saturday, eventually coming out with a record of 1-1 for the day. The team played the Vicenza Cougars for the first game and defeated them in three sets (26-24; 25-21; 26-24). Leading the team with attacks was Krause with 10, sophomore Leina Esperon with 5, and Soto with 3 attacks. Senior Carina Cusumano, Krause, and Espiet defended the back line with a total of 22 digs. Fukumitsu had 4 assists and Cusumano lead with 6. The second match consisted of four sets of extreme intensity. The Lady Wildcats won the first set with a score of 25-18.
The next three sets, the AOSR Falcons came out on top with scores of 25-23; 26-24; and 31-29. Each team fought for every point, whether it was at the beginning or the end of the set. Krause and Espiet's serves proved to be too much for the Falcons to handle with their collective 10 serving aces. Hall, Krause and Espiet dominated the front row with a total of 19 attacks. Cusumano defended the back row, not letting a single ball touch the ground. Her spectacular digs aided setters Fukumitsu and Soto to have 19 assists. The Lady Wildcats’ next matches are against the Aviano Saints.
Naples High School boys’ volleyball continued their undefeated season sweeping a double-header on Friday and Saturday against American Overseas School of Rome (AOSR) and Vicenza High School. Friday night saw the first game played on the high school’s newly refinished gym floor as the Wildcats swept the AOSR Falcons in straight sets 3-0. Following intermission, the Wildcats had a little more competition from Vicenza’s Cougars. Dropping the first set, the Wildcats came back to win the next three sets, deciding the match 3-1. On Saturday, the schedule was reversed, but the results were the same. Vicenza fell again to Naples in 3 sets to 1. Finally, the Wildcats quickly dispatched AOSR’s Falcons once again in straight sets 3 to 0. Seniors Austin Bain, Josh Hensy, and Sam Murdock anchor the boys’ volleyball team. They were recognized during Saturday’s intermission, as this was their last home game of the season. A strong bench of teammates support the senior starters. During the long matches, every Wildcat player got to play. Putting the ‘forza’ into Napoli, the Wildcat team is led and trained by coaches Peter Nagafuchi, Chris Lambert, and Emilio Espiet. The Wildcats will be back in action again today on their final road trip to face the Aviano Saints before competing in the DoDDS European Volleyball Championship.

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Learning Local Customs in Formia
Shopping Field Trip to Formia participants check out one of the shops along the main streets during their intercultural relations tour hosted by FFSC Gaeta. (Photo by Angelo D'Arienzo) From FFSC Gaeta
One of the major goals of our Fleet and Family Support Center is to ease the adaptation to the local customs and way of life for the military and their families living in Italy. Shopping is one of the main activities people engage in when in a different country and this Intercultural workshop is designed to empower individuals to go out on the economy and shop as the Italians do. This "on the road" workshop in Formia, near Gaeta, took participants to different shops and vendors in the town. Everybody learned where and how to get locally what they need in everyday’s life. Formia is known as a shopping town and the field trip covered the two main streets. Attendees were able to see what is available off the beaten path. The purpose of this workshop has been to discover unknown stores and vendors people can go back to at their own convenience to shop with ample time. The major stores were skipped, but the small corner shops were included to provide the real Italian experience.
