Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet held a change of command ceremony at Naval Support Activity Naples, Oct. 11, in front of distinguished guests, friends, family and shipmates. During the ceremony, Vice Adm. Phil Davidson relieved Vice Adm. Frank C. Pandolfe as commander, U.S. 6th Fleet. Adm. Bruce W. Clingan, commander, U.S.
Naval Forces Europe-Africa; commander, Allied Joint Force Command Naples, commented on Pandolfe's accomplishments. "I am certain when Adm. Pandolfe took the helm two years ago, he did not imagine his area of responsibility would emerge as the most challenging and complex environment the U.S. Navy operates in today," said Clingan. Clingan also praised Pandolfe's leadership during his tenure at 6th Fleet, calling him "A leader who has harnessed the
The Secretary of the Navy has announced a new Department of the Navy sexual assault survey for 2013, which started Oct. 15, and can be taken online via any device that can access the internet. The Department of the Navy Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office (DoN SAPRO), which answers directly to Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, created the survey to assess the Department's progress, and learn what more Sailors and Marines think should be done to fight sexual assault. "We can't help them if we don't know what the issues are, and we don't know if our training is working,"
said Jill Loftus, director of DoN SAPRO. "If they think our training is horrible, then we'd like to know that, so that we can switch gears. We'd also like to know if they think that it is worthwhile and if they're learning stuff because then we can continue in that vein." From previous surveys, DoN SAPRO has learned that the majority of sexual assaults in the Navy and Marine Corps happen to 18 - 24 year olds in social settings involving alcohol, and that the assaults usually occur at A-schools right after boot camp, or at the first duty station. "We've used that information to set up pilot programs," said Loftus. "Our Great Lakes experiment that we've been very suc-

cessful with came from information we learned from our surveys." The experiment targeted Training Support Center Great Lakes, mainly the Sailors who have recently graduated boot camp. The program brought together the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), local hotels, commanding officers, and others to put an end to the risky situations Sailors may encounter. The program also incorporated bystander intervention training, "No Zebras, No Excuses" training, Sex Signals training, a large group presentation on sexual assault and two small-group presentations with discussion groups. see SEXUAL ASSAULT SURVEY Page 10

immense intellectual capital resident in our staff of military and civilian professionals to shape the operational environment ... a commander who has been the driving force behind the 6th Fleet's success in effectively responding to numerous crises over an expansive area of responsibility." Pandolfe began his remarks by expressing his gratitude for the men and women serving under him and with him throughout 6th Fleet.

Captain’s Corner For many families in the NSA Naples community, the Support Site at Gricignano di Aversa is much more than military housing; it is home. Having lived there for nearly two and a half years, I often reflect on our great community and the outstanding facilities we enjoy here in Naples. Sometimes it is easy to take them for granted, but we are truly blessed. Our facilities are relatively new, in great shape and the Support Site has remained nearly immune from the budgetary issues we have endured this year. Many other installations around the world are not nearly as fortunate. We are all part of this community and get to share in the benefits of living here, we also share the responsibility of taking care of what we have and ensuring the base is safe for everyone. We rely on our residents to help us maintain the base and enforce the rules. Please report problems in a timely manner to ensure they are quickly rectified and take an active role in encouraging responsible behavior. Be part of the solution - if you see a child riding a bike or a skateboard and they are not wearing a helmet, stop them and say something. You could be the one who prevents a serious injury. If a pet bites someone because it was not on its leash or the fields are a mess because no one is picking up after their pets, it degrades the quality of life for everyone. Speaking of kids staying safe, we have a couple of great events for kids and families aboard the Support Site in coming weeks with Spooktacular and Halloween. The Spooktacular, on Oct. 25, lets our little ghouls and goblins enjoy a night to dress up, carve pumpkins, escape the maze, scream at the haunted house, and of course trick or treat. Trick or treating will also take place on Halloween, when we encourage all Support Site residents to set up in front of the doors of our buildings. This way, kids are not in danger of tripping and falling down flights of stairs in large, bulky costumes. We have seen an uptick in power outages on the Support Site recently. Unfortunately, we are reliant upon the Italian electric power company ENEL for our Support Site power. Normally, the outages are brief as we experience power fluctuations from off base that trip the safety circuit breakers in the Support Site substation. These circuit breakers protect the base’s electrical infrastructure as well as our residents’ electrical equipment like big screen TVs, computers, etc. When this occurs, Mirabella is notified and they reset the breakers within 20-30 minutes. Before we installed the circuit breakers, resident equipment was regularly damaged by power spikes. On Wednesday, we had a longer outage a result of an ENEL transformer failure which resulted in approximately seven hours without power while ENEL affected repairs. We had seen a significant decline in power outages until recently as a result of our engagement with ENEL. We are again re-engaging with them to ensure more reliable service and investigating other potential improvements. Bottom line - the problem nearly always resides off base with the quality of power being provided by ENEL and we continue to work to develop a viable long-term fix. I regret the inconvenience this causes to our residents and ask for your patience as we work to improve the situation. As we approach Halloween and the rest of the holiday season, take advantage of opportunities to get out and about. Be smart, though; use risk management and always utilize a designated driver or bus if you intend to drink.

Romeo and Juliet Statue Considered Unsafe One of Italy’s most visited tourist sites, the romantic bronze statue of Juliet in the “Casa di Giulietta” building in Verona, has been damaged by the affectionate gesture of tourists rubbing their hands against the effigy of Shakespeare’s famous play. This rubbing has caused two holes, which are widening over time as a result of renewed friction to the point the statue has become unstable and a danger to visitors passing through. The mayor of Verona, Flavio Tosi, meanwhile, has been involved in a separate row over the Arena, the city's internationally renowned Roman amphitheatre, which every year plays host to operas and, more controversially, pop music concerts by national and international singers.

of Bourbon when he obtained the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. The historical event of that time not only brought Charles to the throne of Naples but also indirectly marked the destiny of the immense wealth art of the Farnese family. The collection includes about 37 paintings and other works from other museums. A ticket costs €13.80 and includes historic apartments, park and exhibition. The palace is open everyday except Tuesdays.

Camels form a road block during a visit to Zoolandia Safari Park in Fasano, Italy.
a trip to the drive-thru Zoo Story and photos by MCC Travis Simmons
Zoolandia in Fasano, about a 3.5 hour drive towards the Adriatic Sea from Naples, provides visitors a safari-like experience as they drive through different sections of the park with animals able to roam around your vehicle. Jurassic Park-style double gates with warning signs about windows being up separate the sections with the more dangerous animals like the lions, tigers and bears, which are all able to walk up to your car as you pass through their area. It’s one thing to put your windows down in order to feed some deer, camels, ostriches or giraffes; it’s quite another when the paws of the animals seem larger than your head. It’s not the vast, open grasslands of an African safari, but you have more of a guarantee of seeing the animals during such a short visit. In our one visit, we witnessed lions wrestling, bears doing a little stand-up boxing and a tiger using a 20-foot tree
like it was a tiny scratching post. Our one-year-old daughter was intrigued with the intensity of the lion roars. There are also normal amusement park rides like roller coasters and log rides, as well as water shows and carnival-style games at Zoolandia. The seal show we attended packed the room with families and let a few kids interact with the three slip-
pery performers. They also have other aquatic performances at scheduled times throughout the day and a train that will take you through a monkey jungle and other park areas. While on that side of the peninsula, visitors with time can also see the Bari Huts, an archaeological park, and some small beaches scattered along the coast.

CHANGE OF COMMAND
Continued from Page 1
Vice Adm. Frank C. Pandolfe speaks to guests during the U.S. 6th Fleet change of command ceremony at Naval Support Activity Naples. During the ceremony, Pandolfe was relieved by Vice Adm. Phil Davidson as commander of U.S. 6th Fleet. (Photo by MC2 Corey Hensley) "For the past two years, this staff, our task forces, and our ships, aircraft, and Sailors in the fleet have worked together to enhance security throughout this theater. From ballistic missile defense to preparing for crisis response and conducting maritime security operations, you delivered success to this region, to our nation, and to the NATO alliance. I am very proud of what you have done!" Pandolfe then stressed the need for, and the importance of, always being ready. "As I look back over the past two years - which have gone by in the blink of an eye - I'm amazed at all the change that has taken place. The region in which we operate is indeed highly dynamic and unpredictable. It requires ready forces that are thoroughly trained, properly positioned; well focused and practiced in working alongside our allies to enhance security and stability." For his leadership as commander, U.S. 6th Fleet and his dedication to executing the mission, Pandolfe was
presented the Distinguished Service Medal by Clingan. After the award presentation and the reading of their orders, Pandolfe relinquished command of 6th Fleet to Davidson, who then offered his perspective to his new staff. "All of us in the U.S. Navy continue to be guided by our CNO's three tenets: warfighting first... operate forward... be ready," said Davidson. "At U.S. 6th Fleet, we can and will continue to embody these tenets in our current operations, in our readiness to respond to crises, and in the many partnerships we have here in Europe and Africa." Pandolfe will serve in the Pentagon as director, Strategic Plans and Policy, J-5, Joint Staff; and senior member, United States Delegation to the United Nations Military Staff Committee. Davidson previously served as director of Maritime Operations for U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va.
Energy Conservation October Is Energy Awareness Month From the NSA Naples Energy Management Team
We first set aside a time to remind us about saving energy in 1981 with American Energy Week. The Department of the Navy has long been conducting energy awareness campaigns that promote the wise and efficient use of energy. Our nation can benefit from the wise use of energy at federal facilities. As the single largest domestic user of energy, the federal government spends more than $9 billion to power its vehicles, operations, and approximately 500,000 facilities throughout the United States. Efficient energy management at federal facilities: • Saves taxpayer dollars • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions • Protects the environment and natural resources
• Contributes to our national security In addition, regulations like the Energy Policy Act of 2005 require federal agencies to meet a number of energy and water management goals. With so many major global challenges tied to energy use, including air pollution, climate change, volatile fuel supplies and costs, aging energy infrastructure and reliance on fossil fuels, it makes sense to choose energy efficiency as a basic work ethic and lifestyle. During Energy Awareness Month, and throughout the year, we must all remember that saving energy is an individual priority and focus. We can safeguard our energy infrastructure and reduce our carbon footprint in all that we do through simple choices and attention to energy efficiency.
Funding Issues Shift Board Schedule From Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs Office
Due to a lapse in federal funding, all statutory and administrative selection
boards scheduled for October are being rescheduled, Navy leaders said Oct. 11. According to Capt. Chris Halton, assistant commander for Career Progression at
Navy Personnel Command (NPC), boards are comprised of Sailors from around the world. Since NPC has no travel funding, no one is able to be a voting member of a board or work as an assistant recorder. "NPC does not vote on any board and the board recommendations are made by Fleet sailors," said Halton. An updated fiscal year 2015 board schedule will be posted on the NPC website once all of the details are worked out. Visit www.npc.navy.mil/ boards/generalboardinfo in the upcoming days for the updated schedule.

Red Ribbon Week at Naples Schools By Kristin Himmler, ASACS Naples Middle High School program
Giuseppe Del Giacco, ICR specialist, provides fresh bread to tour participants after visiting the vineyard and tasting homemade wine. (Photo by Aracely Aguilar)
a Visit to a Local Vineyard From Fleet and Family Support Center Naples
One of the many gifts of living in Italy is the vast opportunity to explore local small vineyards and wineries. In September, Giuseppe Del Giacco, Fleet and Family Support Center Intercultural Relations Specialist, took a group of 40 Americans to his hometown of Paolisi for a tour of his vineyard. Paolisi is located in the province of Benevento, approximately one hour northeast of Support Site. During the visit, participants were able to learn about the entire process of wine making, from starting a vineyard to actually producing and bottling the wine. “It was an extremely special opportunity to visit Giuseppe’s vineyard,” said Anna McCahill. “It is clearly a place he is very proud of and I felt
privileged to take part in such an exceptional trip.” Del Giacco’s vineyard has been in his family for more than 200 years and has a long tradition of wine production. He was very eager to share the secrets to vine pruning, grape spraying and ultimately wine making. “It is a true honor taking care of the grapes and vines on the same land where my ancestors worked,” said Del Giacco. “My hope is that [participants] can take this knowledge back to the States with them and produce good homemade wine where they live.” Fleet and Family Support Center ICR specialists are available to answer your cultural questions. For more information on ICR workshops or to sign up, call DSN: 629-6372, 081-811-6372 or email FFSCNSANaplesItaly@eu.navy.mil.
The Red Ribbon Campaign began as a way to honor the work of Enrique (Kiki) Camarena who, as a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent, was tortured and killed in Mexico in 1985. Camarena had worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer prior to joining the DEA. In addition to honoring Camarena’s work, the Red Ribbon Campaign’s tradition of displaying Red Ribbons also symbolizes intolerance of drug, alcohol, and violence while allowing teens, parents and community members to present a unified and visible commitment towards this cause. Some communities, including Naples Middle High School, combine their Red Ribbon Campaigns with Bullying Prevention because researchers have found that middle and high school students who bully their peers are more likely to use alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana, as well as have a higher rate of criminal records by the age of 30. Decreasing the risks factors and increasing the protective factors in youth can help make them less likely to become a bully or abuse alcohol or other drugs. Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated Oct. 21- 24 in Naples with school events designed to increase awareness of the destruction caused by alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse and violence; educate teens on ways to avoid using alcohol, drugs and violence (specifically bullying); and alert families and community members to programs and services available in the community to prevent and intervene with high risk factors. What Can You Do? Use Red Ribbon Week as a way to start (or continue) a conversation with your kids about healthy living. To help keep your teen free from alcohol, other drugs and violence: • Be available and talk openly with your teen about his/her problems. • Spend quality time as a family and get help for problems that arise. • Set clear rules and limits with your teen about where they can go on the economy, what activities you approve of, and who they can, and can’t, spend time with. • Monitor your teen’s activities and peers. • Provide clear, consistent discipline. • Show your teen empathy and help them form positive values. • Support and be actively involved in your teen’s education. • Encourage your teen to try his/her best in school and plan for the future. Contact the ASACS Naples Middle High School program at DSN 629-4181 to learn about their Red Ribbon Week activities.

JFC Naples Hosts NRF Component Commander's Conference By Capt. Rob Leese, JFC Naples Public Affairs
Allied Joint Force Command Naples Commander Adm. Bruce W. Clingan met with NATO Response Force (NRF) component commanders at the headquarters in Lago Patria, Oct. 9, to speak about training, capabilities and challenges facing the NRF now and in the future. The NRF is a highly ready and technologicallyadvanced multinational force made up of land, air, maritime and special operations forces that the Alliance can deploy quickly to wherever it is needed. Clingan welcomed more than 18 commanders and staff representatives before addressing the participants about finishing the standby period and beginning to plan next year’s NRF certification exercises.
"We are eager to collaborate, cooperate and to work with you in the coming time to maintain the highest possible readiness," said Clingan. Participants said the conference allowed them to speak about challenges, areas to develop, and ways to work together more efficiently in planning, training and operations. "It is important to have the opportunity to reflect back on the preparation cycle and with the NRF standby period largely behind us and to think about how we move forward with those lesson learned," said Clingan. The JFC Naples mission is to prepare for, plan and conduct military operations in order to preserve the peace, security and territorial integrity of Alliance member states, freedom of the seas and economic lifelines throughout its area of responsibility and beyond.
Navy Medicine Presents Malaria Vaccine Research Achievements at Roundtable From Naval Medical Research Center Public Affairs Navy Medicine’s malaria vaccine research achievements were highlighted during the most recent meeting of the Malaria Roundtable in Washington, D.C., Sept 12. The Malaria Roundtable is composed of representatives from about 20 groups with a commitment to progress in malaria re-search and development including the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Malaria No More and World Vision; the roundtable is cochaired by PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health) and the U.N. Federation. Capt. Judith Epstein, the clinical director of the Naval Medical Research Center’s (NMRC) Malaria Vaccine Development effort spoke about the collaborative research effort that made news recently about the breakthrough in a malaria vaccine that was reported in the journal, Science, in August. “At the Malaria Roundtable I had the opportunity to present the results of a clinical trial assessing the safety, tolerability, immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a malaria vaccine that was administered intravenously to healthy adult volunteers during a clinical trial at NIH,” said Epstein. “This was a collaborative effort involving researchers from NMRC, the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, the National Institutes of Health and Sanaria, Inc. The vaccine was well tolerated with no serious ad-verse events and this first assessment of the IV administration of the vaccine resulted in high-level protection. The findings demonstrated that a dosethreshold for inducing protective efficacy can be achieved and it is safe and meets regulatory standards.” Malaria has had a significant impact on U.S. military operations

throughout history. Malaria was responsible for a greater loss of manpower than enemy fire in all conflicts occurring in tropical regions during the 20th century. Malaria continues to present a major challenge to force health protection during operations in any environment where malaria is endemic. This includes over 100 countries spanning the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, including most of sub-Saharan Africa and larger regions of South Asia, Southeast Asia, Oceania, central Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America and the Caribbean. In a malaria-naïve military population an infection can severely degrade performance, result in missed duty, and may lead to prolonged hospitalization and, in some cases, death. “The Navy needs a vaccine which is as effective against malaria, a
serious threat to military personnel in malaria-endemic areas, as the vaccines used every day to prevent other life-threatening dis-eases. Our mission at NMRC is to develop a malaria vaccine to prevent malaria morbidity and mortality in military personnel and in vulnerable populations for the benefit of global public health,” said Epstein. “We have reached an incredible milestone in vaccine development, but we still have more research to do, with the hopes of having an effective vaccine for the military in the next five years or so.” Malaria is not a unique military infectious disease, it is a major global health issue and according to WHO World Malaria Report there were 216 million cases of malaria and an estimated 655,000 deaths in 2010. Most deaths occur among children living in Africa.

The Power Is In Your Hands By Cmdr. Daniel Swisshelm, Infection Control Officer at U.S. Naval Hospital Naples
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 2.2 million children under the age of five die each year from diarrheal diseases and pneumonia. Despite costly research projects and the constant quest for new vaccines, these numbers continue to rise at an alarming rate. Surprisingly, the proven cure doesn’t come from a laboratory. The road to a healthier population starts with you and your hands. Tuesday marked the 6th Annual Global Hand Washing Day, an initiative sponsored by numerous public and private organizations to raise awareness and support hand washing with soap and water. Hand washing is the single most important thing you can do to prevent the spread of infection and disease. Although most of us have unlimited access to soap and water, we frequently pass by the sink without taking the opportunity to wash our hands. It’s the act of rubbing our hands together with soap and warm water that not only gets rid of dirt and grime, but also the germs that cause all kinds of illnesses, including the flu. Adequate hand washing has the potential to protect one out of three young children with diarrheal diseases and one out of six children with pneumonia and other respiratory infections. While the best way to prevent influenza infection is to receive an annual flu vaccinate, hand washing can have a dramatic impact on our community this flu season. Do your part to promote hand washing in your home. Practice the healthy habits of good hand hygiene and cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Remember, the key to a healthier community is “in your hands.” For more information on the Global Hand Washing Day, visit www.globalhandwashingday.org.
SEXUAL ASSAULT Referring to Great Lakes, Loftus said, "Using anonymous surveys, we have seen a 60 percent reduction in sexual assaults over the past 34 months." This year's survey incorporates questions from previous surveys, Department of Defense surveys and academic surveys. Pulling from the surveys and lessons learned, DoN SAPRO made the survey more concise to pinpoint the information they're trying to find, while taking less time from Sailors and Marines. "The 10-minute survey that's online focuses directly on the issues surrounding sexual assault, and addresses issues such as perceptions, attitudes of Sailors and Marines about the issue of sexual assault," said Cmdr. David McKay, a research psychologist at DoN SAPRO. "We're also interested in understanding reporting behaviors and attitudes about reporting. "Sexual assault is one of the top priorities of the Secretary, and should be a top priority for all Sailors and Marines, to try to figure out how to combat sexual assault,” said McKay. “The survey is important because it does a couple things. One, it helps us gauge progress on the different interventions we're implementing. Secondly, it provides an opportunity for Sailors and Marines to speak directly to the Secretary about their experiences about sexual assault." The 21st Century Sailor and Marine Office (N-17) lists combating sexual assault as one of its main priorities. Rear Adm. Sean S. Buck, the director of N-17, spends time with Sailors to get feedback. "When I visit with Sailors, I am constantly asked - 'what else can I do to make a difference?' Besides looking out for your shipmates and actively intervening when necessary, surveys like this are your chance to do something, to make your voice heard," Buck said.
Continued from Page 1
Although the survey is a chance for Sailors and Marines to be heard, it is completely anonymous. No one will get a reminder to complete the survey because no one is tracking the individuals who take the survey. "We won't know if you haven't filled out the survey," said Loftus. "There's no fingerprint. There's no electronic tag to our survey. It can be taken from a smart phone; it can be taken from a tablet; it can be taken at the Apple store; it can be taken at your desktop or at home. We have no idea who you are and so you won't get that email reminding you to take it." Loftus said that some of the initiatives that Mabus has instituted, based on previous survey results, included doubling the number of sexual assault investigators at NCIS, increasing the number of sexual assault response coordinators, 66 full-time victim advocates that are civilians trained as counselors, who will help victim support. The JAG is also instituting a victim's legal counsel who will help victims through the process and the Navy is deploying civilian resiliency counselors, who are also certified SARCs, on every big deck. "I think that the Navy and the Marine Corps are really spending the resources and putting the attention on prevention, victim care and support," said Loftus. "We think that if Sailors and Marines are honest and forthright in taking this survey, and we get enough of them, that we'll be able to show the nation and other service people that we're really taking this seriously, that we care, and that we don't want victims. We want to prevent sexual assault. This is a way for every member of the service to help us do that." The survey is available at www.donsapro. navy.mil/donsas.html. The password for all military participants is 2013Survey and the survey will be available through Jan. 6, 2014.

congress Passes bill reopening Federal Government By Jim Garamone, American Forces Press Service
President Barack Obama signed legislation late Wednesday night bringing federal employees back to work after Congress finally resolved the budget logjam which led to a 16-day shutdown. Senate leaders championed bipartisan legislation to reopen the government and remove the threat of government default on its debts. All federal government employees – including some 4,000 Defense Department employees – will report to work tomorrow. The legislation is a continuing resolution that will provide federal government spending at fiscal year 2013 levels. This keeps the sequester-level budget in effect. The act will keep the government open through Jan. 15 and raises the debt limit through Feb. 7. The act contains a provision for a joint Senate-House committee to work on a budget recommendation for fiscal year 2014. Those recommendations are due Dec. 13. The legislation includes the provision to pay all furloughed employees for the period of the lapse in appropriations. The act calls for those employees to be paid “as soon as practicable.” Even before the House of Representatives voted, President Obama signaled his intent to
sign the bill. “We’ll begin reopening our government immediately,” he said in a White House appearance. “And we can begin to lift this cloud of uncertainty and unease from our businesses and from the American people.” Obama asked that all political officials take the lesson of the gridlock to heart and work together to solve the nation’s problems. “My hope and expectation is,” Obama said, “everybody has learned that there is no reason why we can’t work on the issues at hand, why we can’t disagree between the parties while still being agreeable, and make sure that we’re not inflicting harm on the American people when we do have disagreements.” “So hopefully that’s a lesson that will be internalized, and not just by me, but also by Democrats and Republicans, not only the leaders, but also the rank-and-file,” he said. As he was leaving the Brady Press Room at the White House, a reporter asked the president if the shutdown might not be duplicated in January. “No,” the president said and left. Sylvia Matthews Burwell, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, said in a release federal employees “should expect to return to work in the morning.” For more information, go to the OPM web page at www.opm.gov.
Lady Wildcats Move to 8-2 By Victoria Krause
The Lady Wildcats volleyball team traveled up to Aviano, Italy over the weekend for two intense matches against the Aviano Saints. The Wildcats eventually came out on top, winning on Friday and Saturday. The team won in four sets with scores of 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23 on Friday. Saturday, the Lady Wildcats secured the win in three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-22, and 25-17, emerging from the weekend with a record of 8-2. The matches were full of intensity for the Wildcats. Sophomore Courtney Fukumitsu and Junior Keylee Soto contributed many assists. Sophomore Skylar Evans guarded the net and finished with three blocks and Senior Victoria Krause had 14 kills. Seniors Carina Cusumano, Krause, Amilia Espiet and Junior Jenni Lansgraat zealously defended the back row. Junior Harley Williams also contributed kills to the overall score. At one point, the Wildcats were behind 16-5, but that didn’t stop them from coming together as a team and defeating the Saints. The Wildcats grow in skill every match they play. The team will be holding their last home games of the season, Oct. 25-26, in the high school gym. The team will also be holding a Skills Camp on Saturday, Oct. 19 in the high school gym for any 5th-8th grader, boy or girl, who wants to learn

Boys Volleyball Defeats Aviano Saints By Peter Nagafuchi, Wildcats Boys Volleyball Coach
The weekend brought two more victories to the Wildcats boys’ volleyball team against arch rival, the Aviano Saints. The Wildcats won 25-9, 25-18, 25-20 on Friday and 25-20,2514,25-14 on Saturday. The traveling boys of ten worked well together, but the trio of Austin Bain, Josh Hensy and Sam Murdock stood out.
Murdock completed 14 kills, had 4 aces and 4 digs on Friday, then 14 kills on Saturday. Hensy stood out on both offense and defense with 11 kills and 5 digs on Friday and 10 kills, 8 digs and 2 aces Saturday. Austin Bain produced the steady setting assists for a total of 32, laying the foundation for Hensy and Murdock’s spikes, as well as some from Mike Curtin, Kalen Murphy,
Marc Davis and Willie Walden. Marc Davis, Jon Wheeler and Kalen Murphy made a good effort to block the Saints’ offensive attack. The outstanding team work of back court specialist D.J. Langstraat and Frank Perez greatly contributed to the win. The Wildcats boys are now preparing for the European Championship, which will be held in Aviano from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.

Along the lines of “what’s your name?” and “how old are you?”, “where are you from?” belongs to the basic group of questions anyone getting to know someone would ask. It is within the first chapters of your foreign language course and it is one of the first questions you get asked at school, but as you might already guess, it is not that easy to answer for those serving with the military. In my case, I was born in the Dominican Republic. Midway through my marriage I moved to Florida for a few months, then to Georgia for a few years. I went back to Florida for a couple more years and now I'm in Italy. Keep in mind each and every one of these places comes with their own side dish of cultures, idioms, values and even languages. However, this is nothing in comparison to many of our students. Born in California, one parent from the NorthWest while the other from “the South”, moved to Hawaii, then Japan, Virginia, and now Italy is a very common answer to this question. This could have an empowering, and somewhat interesting, effect in ourselves, but this could also have the power to make us feel rootless and without a sense of belonging. That is the reason we will be addressing the topic of “Home” at our Club Beyond youth meetings the next few weeks. The working definition we will use is a quote by Pico Iyer who said, “Home is not just the place where you happen to be born, but the place where you become yourself.” While it is true that home is an address, and where the heart is, our relationships or even the songs on our iPod, the idea of becoming ourselves as the foundation of our
home is intriguing at least. Could it be that home is an ever-working state, above and beyond the boundaries of geography, or the presence of significant relationships? Could it be that home is more portable, and more personal, than we might think? It is simply not possible to “become oneself” without first knowing our identity, our true identity. To do so wouldn’t be self-awareness, but self-deception. Our journey of self-discovery, as paradoxical as it might seem, does not depend solely on us but on those who know and love us as well. It is in a loving and responsible community where we are accepted unconditionally and challenged to keep growing our potential. Do you want to become yourself? Allow yourself the opportunity to belong and believe in those who know you, and love you. This series of talks will be posted on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ CBNaples for the community at large, but in case I miss you on the internet or at our meetings, here is the bottom line: Home is a working state in which you keep building every day, regardless of your location, with the assistance of a nurturing community and the assurance of belonging to an all-loving, all-knowing and all-good Creator.

NCOs Participate in Intermediate Leadership in a Multi-National Environment By Capt. Rob Leese, JFC Naples Public Affairs
Three members of Allied Joint Force Command Naples participated in the two-week Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) Intermediate Leadership in a MultiNational En vironment Course at the NCO School in Luzern, Switzerland from Sept. 23 to Oct. 4, 2013. Petty Officer 2nd Class Dwayne Morris, Royal Canadian Navy, Sgt. Major Diego Gagliotta, Italian Air Force, participated as students during the course, while Master Warrant Officer Giorgio Frausin, Canad ian Air Force, instructed 27 students from 22 nations. The course is fully accredited by NATO and intends to give senior NCOs an indepth idea about leadership and provide them the neces-
sary tools for their daily work in a multi-national environment. “I attended the Advanced Leadership Course in January and they asked me to come back as an instructor,” said Frausin. “Developing NCOs across the entire Alliance and partner countries is important as it provides a baseline expectation of the leadership abilities of a professional non-commissioned officer at the various levels.” During this course, members further developed and practiced their leadership skills and management abilities. They were taught NATO’s structures, policies and current issues while developing their communication skills to be able to enhance effective communication within their units and supervise ethical awareness in an international environment.
“As a student, the course was very interesting and intense. The school was well organized and the course helped me to develop new skills and improve old ones,” stated Gagliotta. “The ability to network with other nation’s NCOs and build lasting friendship was the best part of this course.” The courses take place four times a year, with no costs for accommodation and food for the students. The Swiss Armed Forces covered these expenses. “The strength of cultural diversity and the value of listening to other points of view which you might not have thought of was of immense value,” said Morris. “The opportunity to work with senior NCO from nations of the Alliance and our partners provided valuable insight.”
Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L.
