Captain’s Corner

I’d like to give you an update on the power substation maintenance on the Support Site. You probably know that Mirabella identified an issue on a backup line right away, and we thus had to alter the initial schedule. We couldn’t isolate several loops as a result of that backup line fault, which is why we rescheduled those housing units, which aren’t listed on the updated schedule. Mirabella is completing the maintenance on the unaffected substation while at the same time working on repairing the faulty line with ENEL. Once that line is repaired, workers can finish the substation maintenance for the remaining loops. Mirabella is working hard to get this done as soon as possible. We will keep everyone informed as things progress, but for now please check the updated schedule – posted on Facebook and on the CNIC Naples website (on the Public Works page) – and stay tuned to the normal PAO channels for more information. We recently had to shut off the lights over the skate park and basketball court area due to vandalism of the switch box. Someone had broken into the box that controls the lights and destroyed the mechanism so that it’s no longer useable. That means the skate park and basketball courts will be pitch dark after sunset – and, with daylight savings time ending this weekend, that really limits the after-school time that kids can spend there. I don’t want to sound like a parent saying, “This is why we can’t have nice things,” but I encourage the community to remember instances like this when asking why that springy camel at the playground hasn’t been repaired yet, or why we haven’t built a second teen center for 10th- to 12thgraders. I need everyone’s help to keep vandalism and destructive behaviors in check. It robs the community not only of that one bathroom stall or those particular lights, but also of something else we could have used that repair money on. Everyone knows it’s an election year, and that we’re coming down to the last week and a half before Election Day Nov. 6. If you haven’t voted yet, please do. There is still time to complete a federal write-in ballot, but the deadline for many states requires ballots to be postmarked Monday or Tuesday, so it really IS the last minute now. Every state’s deadline is different, so check fvap.gov to ensure your ballot will count. I encourage everyone to exercise the right we fight to protect. Every vote counts. This week we’re booked solid with Halloween festivities on base, with Spooktacular tonight from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Support Site Central Park. There will be a hay ride from the Spooktacular to and from the Seabee Haunted House, which continues its “seven nights of terror” near the Commissary from 7 to 11 p.m. through Wednesday. Trick-or-treating will be on Halloween night (Oct. 31) from 6 to 9 p.m. on the Support Site. Residents will have tables set up outside the front door of each building so we don’t have little ghosts and princesses tripping up and down the apartment stairs. Morale, Welfare and Recreation has a few events scheduled at the golf course and O’Rhys as well. Have a spooky weekend!

Italian News Briefs

Each year, almost €7 billion worth of counterfeit goods is sold in Italy. According to a government report, this illegal trade costs 110,000 legitimate jobs. The most popular counterfeit goods sold are fake brand-name clothing and accessories. There has also been an increase in counterfeit sales of cosmetics, CDs, DVDs, computer software and food stuffs. The research institute Censis reported that Italian consumers are unscrupulous about buying counterfeit products that also include jewelry, toys and medication.

About 60 square meters of the house still needs to be excavated, a process that may bring other important discoveries to light.

Obama, Romney make campaign stop in Naples’ Via San Gregorio Armeno

In central Italy, a gang of thieves stole jeans from clothing companies and resold them them along with other assorted garments throughout central and southern Italy. On Tuesday, police arrested five people and charged 11 others with robbing large clothing companies in the Marche region.

On the shelves of shop in Naples’ Via San Gregorio Armeno, customers can come face-toface with terracotta versions of White House candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. The two statuettes, created by craftsman Genny Di Virgilio, both wear dark suits, but vary in their choice of tie — the terracotta Obama wears a red tie, while the Romney figurine sports a pink tie with white dots. Via San Gregorio Armeno, known to many foreigners as Christmas Alley, is famous for its many artisans who specialize in the creation of the presepe, the traditional Neapolitan nativity scene. The shops also produce figurines to adorn the nativity scenes, often incorporating the latest political figures and celebrities into their work.

New rooms discovered in Pozzuoli’s ‘Rione Terra’

Authorities seize tuna, swordfish in Salerno province

During excavation work in the “Rione Terra” in Pozzuoli, a city in the Naples province, an important archaeological discovery came to light. Behind a walled-up door, archaeologists discovered five unknown rooms dating back to the first century B.C. This discovery is considered to be exceptional because it includes five rooms that are connected to each other, which appear to have been part of one large Roman house. Some of the walls bear traces of frescoes of the imperial era.

During an operation aimed to repress illicit traffic at sea, the naval military police in Salerno seized one-and-a-half tons of bluefin tuna and swordfish. The seizures were carried out in the towns of Positano, Ravello, Maiori and Salerno. All the fish were subjected to examination by veterinarians of the local health department. After deeming the fish fit for human consumption, officials donated it to local charities in town.

Tours with Napoli Sotterranea take visitors into the ruins of a Greek theater and ancient aqueduct system, now buried beneath the modern city of Naples. (Photo by Melissa Kabukuru)

Touring the underground remnants of Naples’ past By Melissa Kabukuru, Panorama editor eeking around the corner of an ancient storefront, I keep expecting to run into someone who will tell me I’m getting too up-close-and-personal with these ruins. Yet no one does. I’m free to keep looking for a clue — something to tell me what might have been sold on these market counters 2,000 years ago. Bread? Wine? Knickknacks? Or maybe produce? There’s plenty of room for my imagination to roam along this ancient street, which is buried below the church of San Lorenzo Maggiore in Naples. Dozens of market stalls line the road that dates back to Roman times — the first century A.D. — and each recess seems to be inviting me inside, as if looking for someone to set up shop there again. There’s a certain magic to exploring ruins like this with no one watching you, and without other tourists chattering nearby. I can pass under an archway that leads to a covered marketplace and imagine the scene as it was in Roman times, with fishmongers, fruit vendors and butchers selling their wares, and buyers flocking to each stall. There’s no better way to appreciate the different layers of history in Naples than by venturing beneath the city’s surface. This marketplace, surmounted by the church complex of San Lorenzo Maggiore, was covered up over the course of many centuries, but it shows how deep the city’s history goes. I love exploring sites like this on my own, but sometimes it is nice to get a little more context — the kind a professional tour provides. Fortunately, another tour that begins near San Lorenzo Maggiore explains the history of ancient Naples in more detail. On the other side of Piazza San Gaetano, guides from Napoli Sotterranea lead visitors down into the ruins of a Greek theater, as well as an underground network of aqueducts and cisterns. The knowledgeable tour guides explain the structure of the ancient Greek theater, and how over the years it became integrated with the Neapolitan homes that surround it. Entering it, you can see how it was used as a cellar by Neapolitan families in the 20th century, nearly 2,000 years after the Roman Emperor Nero once performed there.

P

Beneath the Naples church of San Lorenzo Maggiore, archaeologists have discovered the remains of a Roman market complex, which is now open to visitors. (Photo by Melissa Kabukuru) Napoli Sotterranea also takes you into a system of ancient rock quarries that were used as water cisterns by the Greeks and subsequently expanded by the Romans. The tour guides do an especially good job of explaining how the underground water network worked in ancient times, pointing out details like ledges that ancient workers once used to fish debris out of the water. Only a small portion of the underground cistern and aqueduct system is open to visitors, but the size and sophistication of what’s on display makes it easy to imagine how impressive the system was in its day. The water system’s usefulness continued even after the fall of the Roman Empire. In the 20th century, thousands of Neapolitans fled to the cisterns during World War II, seeking cover from air raids. The tour goes over the history of how the bomb shelters were used during the war, showing some artifacts that the temporary residents left behind. The highlight of the Napoli Sotterranea tour — if you are OK with tight spaces — is the chance to travel down a dark, narrow path that connects two of the ancient cisterns. Each visitor is given a candle to light his or her way during this portion of the tour, adding to the sense of adventure. If it’s just too creepy for you, you can opt to sit this part out — but I never do. I just can’t pass up a chance to explore the remnants of Naples’ ancient past. IF YOU GO The entrance to Napoli Sotterranea is located at Piazza San Gaetano, 68, adjacent to the church of San Paolo Maggiore. English-language tours depart at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. daily, while tours in Italian depart hourly. For the English and Italian tours, you can buy tickets directly at the counter next to the tour entrance for €9 euro. Tours are also offered in other languages if you reserve in advance. Each tour lasts between 90 minutes and two hours. More informa-

American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month begins November 1 By Ensign Amber Lynn Daniel, Navy Office of Diversity and Inclusion Public Affairs

he Navy will join the nation in celebrating American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, which will be observed Nov. 1 through Nov. 30. The 2012 national theme “Serving Our People, Serving Our Nations: Native Visions for Future Generations” encourages the nation to reflect and celebrate the cultures, histories and traditions of the indigenous peoples of North America, including parts of Alaska and the island state of Hawaii. Today, more than 14,000 sailors and 1,200 civilians of Native American and Alaska Native heritage serve in the Navy. According to the U.S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs, 565 federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes exist in the United States, composed of nearly 4.5 million American Indians and Alaska Natives, or 1.5 percent of the nation's population. "American Indians have served in our military ranks from the birth of our country, and they continue to lend their numerous skills, abilities, and gifts to help make our Navy better," said Cmdr. Angela Katson, director of the Navy Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Though they are most widely remembered for their critical role as World War II Navajo Code Talkers, American Indians have served in key roles through every major U.S. military engagement both on land and at sea. Native American seamen served on continental and state vessels during the War of Independence. Even during the Civil War, as many as 20,000 Native Americans contributed to both Union and Confederate forces as auxiliary troops.

The Navy Birthday Ball: a night to remember By Cmdr. Glenn Robbins, Lt. David Yee and Mrs. Victoria Yee Fireworks and an awe-inspiring view of Mt. Vesuvius welcomed members of the Naples-area military community to a night of tradition, food, and dancing Oct. 20 in honor of the U.S. Navy’s 237th birthday. The Navy Ball, which took place at the Grand Hotel La Sonrisa in Sant’Antonio Abate, not only celebrated the Navy’s birthday, it also commemorated the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. During his opening remarks, Capt. Robert Weitzman, the ball’s master of ceremonies, explained the importance of honoring our naval service’s past and revering her timehonored traditions. The ball highlighted many traditions, including a formal colors presentation, a Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/ MIA) remembrance ceremony, as well as the two-bell ceremony. The guest speaker for the evening was Adm. Bruce Clingan, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa and Allied Joint Forces Command Naples. Clingan concentrated his remarks on how courageous leadership played a vital role in the U.S. Navy’s combat performance during the War of 1812. Concluding his speech, he stated, “I have the utmost confidence that the military and civilian members of our modern Navy — of our team here in Naples — have the character to step forward and selflessly pursue the bold achievements necessary to protect our great nation.” Responding to the admiral’s challenge of continuing the Navy’s War of 1812 legacy forward another 200 years, seven members of the civilian and military workforce read aloud the Navy ethos. Following Clingan’s speech, the oldest and youngest active-duty sailors in attendance — Clingan and CTMSN Conor Dean, respectively — cut the ceremonial birthday cake, and several lucky guests were awarded prizes during the raffle drawing. Following the conclusion of the official ceremony, service members and civilians danced and enjoyed the festivities long into the evening, with a great sense of pride and heritage.

EARTHQUAKE DRILL

Continued from Page 1

In the Italian community, participants in the ShakeOut included students, teachers and civil protection officials throughout Southern Italy. One group that took part was the Giacinto Diano middle school in Pozzuoli, a community west of Naples that is a hotbed of seismic activity. During the drill, roughly 1,000 children at the school — which is close to an active volcano, the Solfatara — practiced how to seek cover during an earthquake and evacuate when instructed. The mayor of Pozzuoli, Vincenzo Figliolia, and the Italian Red Cross were present during the school’s drill, as were about 35 members of the local volunteer civil protection agency. “It was very significant, because it was a very big school and the children followed the rules very precisely,” said Alfonso Trincone, the president of the Carabinieri’s volunteer civil protection group in Pozzuoli. “It was a very, very important demonstration.” Emergency management officials at Naval Support Activity Naples said they plan to hold an earthquake drill on a quarterly basis in the future. For further information on the ShakeOut, visit www.shakeout.org/Italia.

Despite being ineligible for the draft in 1917, as many as 15,000 American Indians enlisted to fight overseas during World War I. American Indians took part in every assault the U.S. Marines conducted in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945, and more than 44,000 American Indians fought in World War II, including 1,910 sailors and several dozen WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). Over 41,500 American Indians, of whom more than 90 percent were volunteers, fought in the Vietnam War; between 10,000 and 15,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives fought in the Korean War and during the Cold War. Recognized annually, Native American Heritage Month first began with the establishment of American Indian Day by the governor of New York in May of 1916. Several additional states enacted celebrations during the fourth Friday in September, but the celebration did not gain official national recognition until President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 as "National American Indian Heritage Month." Similar proclamations under different names, including "Native American Heritage Month" and "National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month," have been issued each year since 1994. Options for reporting domestic violence By Kathleen Williams, LCSW, FFSC Family Advocacy Representative

omestic abuse often goes unreported in society. Some victims don’t ask for help because they fear for their safety or for the safety of their children. Some victims may be financially dependent on their partner and fear losing their home or having to move to another community. Others fear they may not be believed if they report what is happening in their home. Victims of domestic abuse may have a strong emotional attachment to their partner. Some may minimize the violence or believe things will improve. Some keep quiet because of family and community pressure. In the military community, victims may choose not to report to the military system because they fear mandatory reporting will result in negative consequences to the service member’s career. This leaves many victims living with the abuse afraid to seek the assistance that is available to them. Under Department of Defense and Navy policy, victims of domestic abuse can receive confidential support and information regarding domestic abuse without reporting to law enforcement or the service member’s command. This confidential support is referred to as “Restricted Reporting.”

D

What does ‘restricted’ mean? Any verbal, written or electronic communication disclosed to one of the individuals listed below is protected information and may not be disclosed to anyone else unless the victim authorizes the release of the information, or an exception applies.

Who may make a restricted report? Any adult age 18 and above who is eligible to receive military medical treatment may make a restricted report of domestic abuse by their spouse, former spouse, intimate partner or former intimate partner. This includes both active duty service members and civilians and spouses under the age of 18.

By YNC(SW) Daniel Bowen

Who can you speak to? If you or someone you know is being physically or emotionally abused by their spouse or partner, you may contact the following individuals and ask to speak to someone confidentially: • A Fleet and Family Support Center clinical counselor; • A military medical provider, or any person authorized to provide direct patient care in military medicine and dental facilities; • A chaplain. What are the exceptions? • When there is imminent threat to health or safety of the victim or another person; • When child abuse is suspected; • When required for fitness for duty in disability retirement boards; • When a military, federal, or state judge issues a subpoena; • When required by federal or state statute or applicable international agreement. Abusive partners often blame their actions on the victim. Remember that domestic abuse is the fault of the person who commits it. Contact the Fleet and Family Support Center at 081-811-6372/6533 and ask to speak to a counselor for more information and assistance. The Navy is committed to ensuring victims of domestic abuse are protected, treated with dignity and respect, and provided support, advocacy and care.

fter handily winning two dual meets with the Sigonella Swordfish early in the season, one away and one home, the Tiger Sharks traveled to Sigonella to compete in the annual “Double Dip” meets over Columbus Day weekend. The event consisted of two meets in two days. The team meet on day one consisted of six teams. After trading first place with the Sigonella Sharks throughout the day, the Tiger Sharks were edged out of the top spot by eight points, finishing second with a total of 899 points. The meet conflicted with the Naples homecoming sporting events, which took away many of the team’s senior swimmers. It was a test of the depth of the team, as the oldest of the 40 Tiger Sharks competing in the meet was just 13. “Our young swimmers proved they could handle the competition, giving the other teams a steady run for their money,” coach Jane Higgins said. Swimmers Delaney Brenner (age 8), Jacob Levine (age 10), Timothy Smith (age 12), Emily Patterson (age 12) and Luke Patterson (age 9) all took first place in their three events, racking up 36 points each for the team. Swimmer Tim Smith was a key component on the 11- to 12-year-old relay team, and was named swimmer of the meet by the Tiger Sharks coaching staff. “Tim is a true competitor and welcomes any challenge that is given to him,” coach Higgins said. Swimmers Ariana Lewis (age 13) and Nick Sherer (age 11) each finished first in two events and second in their third event, earning the team 34 points each. Each first-place finish garnered the team 12 points. Other swimmers with first-place finishes included Blythe Brenner (age 9), Chris Levine (age 12), Sean Quirk (age 9), Andrew Smith (age 13), Lauren Snodgrass (age 8), Ryan Sword (age 8) and Leslie Traucht (age 8). Lauren Snodgrass was also named the female “biggest loser” of the meet, meaning that among all the Tiger Sharks she dropped the most total cumulative time in all of her events. Second place finishes earned the team 10 points. Danielle Cutler (age 11) finished second in two of her three events and Stephen Traucht (age 10) finished second in all three of his events. Other swimmers with finishes in the top three included Samantha Allen (age 12), Lydia Boyum (age 12), Shannon Cutler (age 11), Devon Durig (age 9), Dorian Durig (age 11), Luke Johnson (age 8) Alexa Morillo (age 10), Caitlin Quirk (age 12), Brendan Roberts (age 10), Lindsey Sharp (age 9), John Sherer (age 13), Jordan Traucht (age 7) and Nathan Traucht (age 12). Devon Durig was also named the male “biggest loser” of the meet. With six teams participating in the meet, points were awarded beyond the top three places, as many events had several heats and a large number of competitors. Other swimmers who contributed points for the Tiger Sharks were Mackenzie Allen (age 9), Ingrid Bidwell (age 13), Sydney Bidwell (age 14), Ezra Liu (age 8), Paul Patterson (age 6), Conner Roberts (age 13), Carly Sharp (age 11), Maria Sherer (age 8), Brendan Smith (age 9) and Jodie Urbanski (age 10). Noah Sherer (age 10) competed in three events and was the lead-off swimmer for the 200-meter mixed freestyle relay. The second meet of the weekend was a Pentathlon event. Thirty seven Tiger Sharks returned to the pool to compete strictly on an individual basis. In the Noah Sherer, age 10, competes in the backstroke during two days of Pentathlon, swimmers had to swimming competition in Sigonella, Sicily earlier this month.

successfully complete all of the following events to be eligible for a placement award: a medley, freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke, and the butterfly. The length of the event is determined by the age of the swimmer. As many of these strokes are quite technical and some swimmers have not had the opportunity to compete in an event of a particular stroke, competing in and completing the pentathlon is an accomplishment. Delaney Brenner and Lauren Snodgrass took first and second respectively in the girls’ age 8 and under category. Ryan Sword took first place for the boys’ age 8 and under category. Lauren Snodgrass and Ryan Sword were also both named the “biggest losers” for the meet. For the 9-year-old girls, Blythe Brenner finished second and Lindsey Sharp finished fourth. The 9year-old boys nearly swept the category, with second place going to Luke Patterson, followed in order by Sean Quirk, Devon Durig and Brendan Smith. Jodie Urbanski earned a sixth-place finish for the 10-year-old girls, and Jacob Levine, Stephen Traught, and Noah Sherer swept spots one, two, and three for the 10-year-old boys. Jacob Levin earned the team’s male Swimmer of the Meet honors. “[Jacob] is a strong swimmer and a competitor with the desire to win,” coach Higgins said. The 11-year-old girls category was dominated by Naples, with first place going to Danielle Cutler. Sister Shannon Cutler took third, followed in succession by Carly Sharp and Dorian Durig. Nick Sherer finished first for the 11-year-old boys. The 12-year-old girls category was won by Emily Patterson. Lydia Boyum took second, Caitlyn Quirk finished sixth and Samantha Allen took seventh. Swimmer Emily Patterson earned the team’s female Swimmer of the Meet honor for the Pentathlon. “In all five of her events, Emily took first place and continued to improve her times,” coach Higgins said. “She has a real feel for the water, making every stroke efficient and powerful.” Timothy Smith and Nathan Traucht finished first and fourth, respectively, in the 12-year-old boys category. Ariana Lewis placed fourth in the girls 13 to 14 age group, and Andrew Smith placed sixth for the boys in the same age group. Other Tiger Sharks who competed in the Pentathlon event included Maria and John Sherer, Leslie and Jordan Traucht, Paul Patterson, Ezra Lui, Mackenzie Allen, Brendan and Conner Roberts, and Chris Levine. In addition to winning points for the team during the two-day meet, 19 Tiger Sharks swimmers qualified to compete in the championship event in Eindhoven, Netherlands in February. This weekend, the Naples Tiger Sharks will travel to Berlin to compete in their fourth team meet of the season.

Girls’ volleyball: Another winning weekend for the Naples Wildcats By Isabel Krause he Lady Wildcats’ weekend ended in success once again Oct. 12 and 13, boosting the Naples team’s season record to 10-0. Florence brought it’s A-game when it tried challenge the mighty Wildcats, but Naples swept the first game 25-3, 25-22. Sophomore middle hitters Aundrea Hall and Laneisha Jeans were a dominating presence at the net, each with a 100 percent kill rate. Freshman Gabi Arce and Sophomore Alexis Cutler kept the ball in play, repeatedly sacrificing their elbows and knees to the unyielding courts to save the ball. Freshman Courtney Fukumitsu brought fire to the game with her powerful serves and beautiful sets; 9 out of her 20 serves were untouched. Sophomore libero Valerie Cariello prompted many great plays with her perfect passes, enabling the Wildcats to get the win. The second game of the weekend

(Photo by Kenny Byler) concluded in the same manner, with the Wildcats coming out on top 25-11, 25-17. Freshman middle hitter Skylar Evans and freshman outside hitter Gabi Arce powered through the front row, each racking up many hard-hit kills. Senior Tara O'Brien, junior Carina Cusumano and Hall were also dominant forces at the net, each with 3, 2, and 5 kills respectively. Hall kept a close watch on the net, ready to block any ball that attempted to cross it. Cariello and

Cusumano tore up the court with their stellar passes and digs, while Evans, Cutler and Fukumitsu kept the Wildcats in the lead with their beautiful serves. This weekend, the Lady Wildcats travel to Rome to play Marymount International School (MMI) of Rome. If the Wildcats can sweep MMI, this will be the first time in Naples High School history the Lady Wildcats’ volleyball team will be undefeated during the regular season.

Boats bob in the water on the coast of Amalfi, the town that gives Italy’s Amalfi Coast its name. Cruising along the coast in a small boat can provide a more intimate experience than driving or taking a bus. (Photo by Laura Byrd)

Watercolors of Italy By Laura Byrd

ouncing over the waves in our small boat, the breeze is a cool respite from the intense heat of Southern Italy’s steamy summer months. Hypnotized by the expanse of ocean around us, I can see the island of Procida off in the distance. Unlike the island of Capri, Procida is not a coveted tourist destination, but a favorite of local Italians who both live and daytrip there on weekends. Most visitors to Italy would consider this day-long adventure motoring through the islands off the shore of Naples a grand new adventure. But for me it feels strangely comforting and familiar. Growing up in Seattle, boating was a way of life for our family. Every summer my mother and father would load a two-week supply of groceries into our 35-foot Chris Craft and our vacation was spent afloat in the San Juan Islands, fishing and exploring. Some of my fondest memories were of the opening day of salmon fishing in Puget Sound, when a flotilla of boats would bob together in the water, signal-

ing the start of a popular Northwest pursuit. Crawling out the hatch and perching on the bow of our family boat to read a book while we trolled the Pacific Ocean was a treasured pastime from my childhood. Daydreaming about home in our small rental boat as the coast of Naples fades into the horizon, I’m struck by the contrasts between the shoreline of my home state and the shores of Southern Italy. Waterfront homes in the Pacific Northwest are arranged horizontally, sprawling wide across expanses of beach surrounded by thick evergreens. Here, Italian homes are stacked and staggered vertically, rising high above the beach. Steep cliffs that would discourage the construction of a home in the United States serve as platforms here for multiple resi-

dences. Craggy rock that rises directly from the beach is neatly crisscrossed with switchbacks, leading like a child’s puzzle game to an abrupt stop in the path where a home sits securely on a ledge, bordered by vineyards and colorful gardens. Unlike the earth tones commonly used in construction designed to “commune and conform” with nature around Seattle, the villas here are vivid with color. Pinks, reds, yellow and blue all pop from the landscape. From faded pastels with chips of color

missing from their old walls to brilliant doors and shutters of new paint and bright tiles, Italian homes celebrate color in a cheerful way that creates a masterful and seemingly accidental painting in every neighborhood. The most dramatic views of Italian life as living art are well known – the Amalfi Coast attracts millions of visitors every year and has been photographed from both air and sea. But what some people don’t see is the gallery of color from this water perspective. The Mediterranean Sea frames the coast of Italy like a glass mirror in the morning and late afternoon. Unlike the high decks of a cruise ship or seat of an airplane, from our small boat two feet above the waterline, the reflection of color around us feels like an intimate experience of Italy that draws you into each home, each church and each vineyard. Rather than a postcard view, navigating the ocean in this small boat, with the taste of salt on our lips and the smell of the

sea so close, pulls us into the reflection in the water around us. Fishermen glance over and smile, Italians in pleasure boats wave. The brilliant hues of Procida are reflected in the water around us, and we are part of the painting – part of what, from this unique and intimate view, make up the watercolors of Italy.

Renting a boat: Small boat rentals are available from the Acquamorta port at Monte di Procida if you wish to take one to explore the nearby island of Procida. Additional boat rental facilities can be found on Procida near the main port where the ferries from Naples and Pozzuoli arrive. In Amalfi and Capri, you can also rent boats near the towns’ busy ferry terminals. One company that provides rentals in Amalfi is Amalfi Marine; you can visit the company’s website at www.amalfimarine.com. The boat rental facility is located about 250 meters west of the port.

Experiencing South Italy's islands and coastlines on a small rental boat can be a refreshing alternative to driving or taking a large ferry between towns. (Photo by Laura Byrd)
