The Navy joins the nation Sept. 15 in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, which will be observed through Oct. 15. With a national theme of "Diversity United, Building America's Future Today," the observance celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. According to 2010 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Hispanics comprise 16.3 percent of the total United States population, or 50.5 million people, forming the United States’ largest racial or ethnic minority. Additionally, it is projected that by 2050, a quarter of the nation's workforce will be Hispanic. The Navy's workforce reflects this diversity. There are more than 58,000 Hispanic sailors and officers, both active duty and Reserve, who serve in the Navy today. Four Navy flag officers are Hispanic, while there are 172 Hispanic master chiefs. Additionally, the Navy Total Force includes nearly 15,000 Hispanic civilians. In his 2011 National Hispanic Heritage Month Presidential Proclamation, President Barack Obama noted, "The future of America is inextricably linked to the future of our Hispanic community. Our country thrives on the diversity and ingenuity of all our people, and our ability to out innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world will depend greatly on the success of Hispanics." All commands are encouraged to expand their awareness of Hispanic American Heritage Month through programs, exhibits, publications, and participation in military and community events. Resources for use in planning command heritage events, including a video presentation on Hispanic American Heritage Month, can be found online at the Navy Office of Diversity and Inclusion observances web page. see HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH Page 7

Naples military mom Sherri Moyer had so much trouble finding a way to exercise while watching her children this summer that she almost went home to the United States. Instead, she decided to create a workout group where parents at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples could bring their kids and still feel the burn. Moyer’s group, the Naples Beachbody Fit Club, has grown to include several dozen moms who regularly attend workout sessions with their children. On Facebook, the group has nearly 300 followers. The group was born out of Moyer’s personal frustration that she was unable to bring her children to on-base workout facilities. The Naples heat that bore down in June and July complicated her efforts to exercise outdoors with her 2-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son. see BEACHBODY FIT CLUB Page 10

ASC Thrift store seeks volunteers, donations

Happy Friday everyone! It’s been a busy week this week around the base, especially for the chiefselects who finish up their induction today and finally join the mess as chief petty officers. I’d like congratulate each selectee on this huge milestone in your careers. It was an honor to be asked by the selectees to speak at the Sept. 11 ceremony they put together on Tuesday. For those who missed it, that ceremony was a very moving event honoring the tragedy as well as the heroism from that day. I want to update the community on the power situation at the Support Site. We had a meeting this week with the regional director of ENEL, the top leadership of Mirabella, and the senior staff at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples to help identify the root causes of the recent power outages. The bottom line is that we don’t know exactly why this keeps happening, but all three sides of the triangle now have pledged their full efforts to investigate the infrastructure and get to the bottom of this problem. ENEL has agreed to allow us to loosen the parameters on our protective equipment, which should keep us from having so many outages. The settings for our protective equipment are dictated by ENEL in accordance with Italian law, so getting them to open up the parameters was a huge success for us and should result in fewer outages. We’ll be taking a look at the Support Site infrastructure, testing all our equipment and the underground lines for faults and grounds, in conjunction with the upcoming planned maintenance. ENEL will be doing similar investigations into its infrastructure in Gricignano and the surrounding areas, in addition to installing equipment that will monitor the quality of power entering the base. I’m hopeful that we’ll find ways we can improve the delivery of power to the base. I’m not sure what changed recently, because we had about nine good months of very reliable service, but we are engaged with ENEL at the highest levels and are working hard to get it fixed. Our goal is to end the outages once and for all. A couple more quick updates on things around the base: – The food court at Capodichino is coming along and the vendor who has been selected should be officially announced very soon. This facility will be a great quality of life improvement for our sailors who live and work at Capodichino, and we eagerly await the opening of the facility in the spring. – The Support Site Bowling Alley renovation should be wrapping up this week, and there will be a grand re-opening next Friday. We will soon begin a theater conversion to 3D, to include a screen in the larger of the two auditoriums that will be 40 percent bigger. We are also looking to invest in automated ticket purchasing machines for the movies that will reduce the lines and facilitate faster service at the concession stand. Please continue to patronize these great facilities. – Holiday mailing dates will be out soon. Even though the holidays seem like a long time from now, it’s not too early to be thinking about large items that could be too expensive to ship First Class. First Class mail flies directly into Rome and gets down to Naples very quickly, sometimes as fast as four days from the time you order it, and almost always well under 10 days. Things that aren’t shipped First Class or Priority Mail, however, don’t come by air but by ship, and that slow boat can sometimes take months to get here. Next week we are kicking off a Naples Housing Office efficiency study aimed at improving the process and reducing the time it takes to get our sailors into economy housing. This is normally a six-month process, so we are hoping to implement significant improvements in 2013 in time to make any necessary course corrections before the next summer’s busy relocation season. The housing process is onerous and has become that way over a very long period of time. Many of the procedures were put in place by direction or for the protection of our sailors. Additionally, manpower reductions and restructuring in the past have exacerbated the problems. Regardless, we are focused on fixing the issue and improving the ease and turnaround time for our personnel. This weekend is full of events. The chief petty officer pinning ceremony is today, as are the first home volleyball games of the season. Tomorrow we have cross country at Carney Park in the morning and a 1 p.m. home football season opener. Go Wildcats! Also Saturday, Morale, Welfare and Recreation is putting on a paintball tournament and has a “day for kids” in Central Park. Then, the Welfare and Recreation Association and the USO are cooking Neapolitan pizzas in the Village Forum in the evening. So it’s a great weekend to head outside on the Support Site and enjoy some of these community events. I’ll see you out there! Have a great weekend!

‘Love locks’ removed from Roman bridge One of the oldest bridges in Rome, the Ponte Milvio, has become famous in recent years because of all the “love locks” that hang from its lampposts. In recent years, young Romans have decided to express their love by writing their names on locks, attaching the locks to the bridge, then throwing the keys into the river. The tradition developed after the release of the book and film “Tre Metri Sopra Il Cielo” (“Three Meters Above the Sky”), in which the protagonists carried out the same ritual. On Monday, the “love locks” were removed following a lengthy row between those who wanted to clean up the bridge and opponents who wanted it to remain a shrine to eternal love. The locks will be kept in a warehouse until the Cultural Assessor decides what to do with them. A consumer organization has proposed to open a museum to house the “love locks” and immortalize the stories of young people.

Maienfeld, a picturesque Alpine town of about three thousand people, is located in the Rhine Valley in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It is well known for its spectacular mountain scenery and local wine, and because it was the setting of Johanna Spyri’s Heidi novel.

Trekking through Heidi's country Story and photos by Gary Rice

ost of us, regardless of our age, probably remember from our childhood something about the children’s story of Heidi, the young girl who lived a pastoral and peaceful life under the towering peaks of the Swiss Alps. I recall that Shirley Temple played the title role in Hollywood’s 1937 version of the story. But what I mostly remember about that story is its idyllic mountain setting, and I have often thought I would like to visit that almost mythical place where Heidi lived with her grandfather and her goats during the late 19th century. Interestingly enough, the place really does exist; and as I discovered in August, it is a great place to visit. The novel known as Heidi was published in two parts in 1880. It was written by Swiss author Johanna Spyri, who was born and raised in the village of Hirzel, just a few miles south of Zurich on a hill overlooking the lake. Spyri used to visit the tiny village of Jenins, about 60 miles south of Zurich. She liked to “take the waters” in the nearby spa town of Bad Ragaz, and she also visited the town of Maienfeld, just a mile down the road from Jenins.

The small rustic cabin at Ochsenberg, at the end of the trail in the high Alpine meadow above Maienfeld, is a nice little café that serves great German food and beer. For many tourists, it also doubles as the 19th-century home of the fictional Heidi and her grandfather.

Eat, drink and be merry at JFC Oktoberfest Sept. 28 By Melissa Kabukuru, Panorama editor

erman beer, pretzels and Bavarian music will make their triumphant return to Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Naples this month. The 10th JFC Oktoberfest, hosted by the German national support element at JFC, will take place Friday, Sept. 28 at the JFC headquarters in Bagnoli. The festival wasn't held last year due to operations in Libya. But this year, the celebration is back, and it will include traditional German music, children’s activities, and plenty of German beer and food for sale. Tickets went on sale for the event this week. Ticket sales will continue to take place at JFC Naples Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and at Capodichino on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Ticket sellers will also be positioned outside the Navy Exchange at the Support Site on weekends. Attendees will purchase coupons that they can then exchange for food and drinks at the event. The organizers have worked hard to keep the food and drink prices low, said Lt. Col. Thorsten Smoll, the executive officer of the German national support element at JFC. Meals with beer will cost the equivalent of between €2.50 and €3.75 in coupons, while a half-liter of beer will cost €3.75 in coupons, he said. “We want to keep it affordable for everyone,” Smoll said. “It’s not an idea for making money.” Food for sale will include pretzels, bratwurst, steaks and decorated gingerbread, Smoll said. A bounce house, face painting, and arts and crafts will be there to entertain the kids. For the German organizers, this year’s Oktoberfest event is significant because it will be the last one held at JFC’s Bagnoli headquarters. JFC is moving to its new headquarters in Lago Patria later this year. “It’s a representative event for the German soldiers,” Smoll said. “The whole German community will be there — grilling, serving and representing our community.” Buses will be provided at no cost to help people safely travel from the Support Site or Capodichino to JFC. The event organizers want to make sure that no one drinks and drives, Smoll said. While the bus service is free, those who would like to use it are asked to register online at www.oktoberfest-naples.com. That way, the organizers can plan enough buses to accommodate demand, Smoll said.

The driver was then escorted to the Support Site security precinct and was requested to provide another breath sample via the Intoxilyzer 8000, which indicated her blood alcohol content was 0.14.

EFMP coordinates assignments so family members are located where they can receive the care and services they need. Service members, not commands, are responsible for enrolling family members and updating information. Service members should: – Contact their medical treatment facility’s EFMP coordinator to enroll family members with chronic medical, mental health, or educational conditions requiring special services. – Update the DD2791 and/or 2792-1 every three years, or when changes in the enrolled family member’s status occur. – Update their EFMP status 12 months prior to the projected rotation date. – Disenroll from EFMP when family status changes, medical or educational needs no longer exist, or the enrolled family member no longer resides with the service member.

BEACHBODY FIT CLUB “I was ready to go back to the United States for the rest of the summer, because I did not have any motivation to work out in this heat with my daughter,” said Moyer. “I couldn’t bring her into the gym. There was no place that I could exercise. So we started this group.” Moyer, who is a certified personal trainer, leads outdoor bootcamp workouts at the Support Site for members of the Naples Beachbody Fit Club. The elementary school has been loaning out its multi-purpose room for the Zumba classes, which feature routines inspired by Latin dance. Both the bootcamp classes and the Zumba classes are free of charge and stroller-friendly, with parents bringing their children of all ages. At one of the Zumba classes Sept. 10, many of the children chose to join in and participate in the dance-based workout. Others played or read

while their parents kept an eye on them. “It’s kid-friendly, so they can obviously do it with us, or sit and watch, or do their homesaid Heather work,” Harrington, the Zumba class instructor, who has two children of her own. “When the kids see us doing it, it’s fun, and they don’t even know they’re exercising. We’re a good influence on our children.” For parents, not having to find childcare makes squeezing in exercise much easier, said Tirzah Aiken, who regularly comes to the workouts with her five children. “I think trying to coordinate childcare is very difficult, so when you can come to a place where your children are allowed, it’s just a weight off of your shoulders,” Aiken said. “Then the fact that there are other children here for them to play with, it keeps them busy. They enjoy seeing their friends.” Aiken said she appreciates the support she receives from Moyer, who sends out regular messages online to encourage members of the group to exercise and eat healthy. “She’s really an inspiration,” Aiken said. “Sometimes when you’re a mom of little children, you think, ‘It’s not possible, I’ll have to wait until they’re older, until they’re all in school, then my time will come.’ But she’s saying, ‘your time can come now’ — and I’m thankful for that.” Moyer is working to get the Naples Beachbody Fit Club recognized as a command-spon-

Moyer is working with Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) to identify other indoor workout spaces on base where parents can bring children and strollers, she said. Already, MWR plans to open a family workout room at the Support Site Fit Forum in the near future, said MWR marketing director Amber Vlangas. The Naples Beachbody Fit Club posts weekly schedules of

How to make espresso at home Story and photo by Melissa Kabukuru Panorama editor he first time I tried to make espresso at home using a stovetop caffettiera, I almost gagged. My concoction was burnt and thin — nothing like what my Italian friends offered me when I stopped by their homes. Over time I got better, but I knew my technique still could use some improvement. That’s why I decided to attend an espresso-making workshop at the Naples Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) July 25. While Italians may often go to a coffee bar to enjoy their espresso, a stovetop espresso maker is still a staple in almost every Italian home. Offering a small cup of caffè to guests is considered a standard form of Italian courtesy, said Terri Lanna, an intercultural relations specialist at the FFSC. Lanna taught the Neapolitan espresso-making class I attended in July, helping me and roughly 15 other members of the Naples military community learn how to make proper espresso at home. “It is always a good time for a caffè,” Lanna said. “A caffé is a social drink, so people drink from 5 to 6 caffés a day. It depends.” While there are a variety of complicated machines you can buy to make espresso, the stovetop Moka style of coffeemaker remains widely used in Italy. Moka machines of various sizes are sold at the Navy Exchange, as well as at numerous locations out in town.

T

Once you have your coffeemaker, or caffettiera, you must make at least two or three batches of coffee with it that you simply throw away, Lanna said. The first few times you use a new machine, the coffee doesn’t turn out well, she explained. The next step, of course, is buying coffee. You can buy roasted coffee grounds at any Italian supermarket, or from numerous coffee bars out in town. Additionally, The Navy Exchange and Commissary also carry some Italian brands of coffee, such as Kimbo, that work well with stovetop espresso makers. Then you are ready to begin. Here are some of Lanna’s step-by-step instructions for making a good cup of espresso. • Fill the base of the caffettiera with water that is cold, not hot. Cold water takes longer to heat up, allowing the water more time to absorb the flavor of the coffee. You should fill the coffeemaker with water to a point just below the valve. Some coffee makers have a fill line marked to help you with this. • Put the funnel-shaped insert into the coffee maker, just above the water basin. Note that the water shouldn’t rise up when you do this, Lanna said; if it does, you have put in too much water. Fill the funnel with a few scoops of ground coffee. “A little hill,” Lanna said. “It should be kind of loose.” You shouldn’t push or compact the coffee, as that makes it difficult for the water to rise and may cause the coffee to burn, she said.

A stove top coffeemaker, water and coffee grounds are all you need to make Italian espresso at home.

• Screw the top part of the caffettiera onto the base. This seal should be tight so the water doesn’t escape during the heating process, Lanna said. • Place the coffeemaker on a low flame. Don’t put it on an extremely hot burner, Lanna said, because that will cause the coffee to heat up too quickly and give it less time to absorb the flavor of the coffee grounds. With most traditional Moka machines, it helps to leave the lid up until the coffee starts to bubble, Lanna said. Once the coffee begins to boil, remove it from the flame and close the lid, she said. If you are serving the coffee directly from the caffettiera, be sure to stir it first. • When serving guests, it is best to leave the coffee unsweetened and let them add sugar themselves,

Lanna said. This is because everyone likes their coffee a little differently, she said. You can find tazzine (small cups for espresso) at Italian markets or home stores, among other places. Other important details: • Do not store your coffee at home in a glass container – use a metal or ceramic one instead. The beans or grounds will react to light and heat, Lanna said. Also keep the beans or ground coffee well sealed. Too much exposure to air will cause the coffee to lose its aroma. • Don’t wash your caffettiera with soap. It is best to simply rinse it with hot water to clean it, Lanna said. Don’t worry about any dark residue on the caffettiera that you can’t easily remove, she said. “The more you use the caffettiera, the

better it comes out.” • If your coffee turns out badly, try again. “By doing it, you become better,” Lanna said. To find out when the FFSC is holding its next class on making Neapolitan espresso, call 081-8116372.

ill Mitchell had been a mother for exactly 15 months when her whole world tumbled upside down. “Collin just stopped talking,” she said, “He completely regressed.” Three months and myriad tests later, Mitchell and her husband Eric, who works for Commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia security, were told their then-18 month old son had autism. He was “practically comatose” and would not communicate or engage with anyone. Determined to take action, Mitchell researched the subject for solutions. “Eleven years ago, no one talked about autism. You didn’t hear about it like you do now. I realized if I was going to get anything done for him, it was going to be up to me,” she said. “When I found ABA, it changed our whole way of living.” Applied Behavioral Analysis (or ABA) therapy, in use since the 1960s, is a well-established method of understanding motivation and using rewards to gradually change behavior. In the last two decades, scientific research studies have shown ABA to be one of the most effective methods for helping children with autism, attention deficit disorder (ADD), or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to develop positive behaviors, improve communication and support learning skills. Parents can learn these skills and methods to use with their own children in a hands-on two-day workshop to be held at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples Sept. 26 and 27. Board certified behavioral analyst Robert Schramm, one of Europe’s foremost experts on behavioral change in children and teens, will present the intensive learning session, which is being sponsored by the Fleet and Family Support Center and the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). “ABA is very much a rewards system, and once you learn the process, you can use it with any subject and any situation,” said Mitchell. “You start by teaching them to succeed, which is important because they have extremely strong fight-or-flight response. Even a small disappointment at school that might be normal for another child could create huge internal anxiety and depression that sets them back months developmentally.” Using ABA techniques helps parents, teachers and other caregivers teach children how to learn in small step-by-step increments, while experiencing success and reducing anxiety. Prompting a child or teen with solutions and using small, immediate rewards helps reinforce success and encourages the child to attempt more and more difficult tasks.

The Sept. 26 and Sept. 27 ABA workshop will be particularly useful for families like those in Naples, who live outside the continental United States (OCONUS) and may not have access to the same support network they would back home, said Amber Becker, EFMP liaison at the NSA Naples FFSC. “Because we are in an OCONUS environment, some think that we don’t have children or teens with serious learning or behavior challenges here,” Becker said. “But here in Naples alone there are more than 120 kids enrolled on IEPs or many more who have been diagnosed after arriving with developmental delays, autism, speech or communication problems. Parents need help so they can help their kids, but there aren’t a lot of resources OCONUS. This workshop brings them tools that are scientifically proven to work with a whole range of behavioral challenges.” Workshop facilitator Robert Schramm noted that families experience great frustration when coping with conditions like ADHD. “Communication breaks down, relationships get strained, and family members who care about each other can spend most of their time feeling angry instead,” he said. “Both parents and kids often end up feeling alone, that no one understands what they’re going through, and no one can help. ABA techniques can help both parents and kids get through these situations to a more positive way of relating, communicating and learning.” The American Academy of Pediatrics states that children who receive early intensive behavioral treatment have made “substantial, sustained gains in IQ, language, academic performance, and some measures of social behavior.” Schramm says that parents who practice these techniques with their children can help their non-verbal children become more comfortable with communication and over time learn to speak. Meanwhile, many ADD/ADHD children learn to self-regulate better and eventually increase focus, minimize social difficulties and improve relationships. The workshop, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 26 and 27, is open to the entire community, including parents, teachers and caregivers. EFMP enrollment is not required. To ask questions or sign up, call the FFSC at 081-811-6372. College credit or CEUs will also be available to participants who attend the full workshop.

In the high Alpine meadow above Maienfeld in the Swiss Alps, a group of cows gather near a water buffalo. These meadows served as the backdrop for the well known novel Heidi, written by Johanna Spyri.

Perched on a 230-foot-high spur of rock, Gutenberg Castle is reflected in the water of a small pond in the village of Balzers, liechtenstein. The castle, built in the 13th century, was acquired by the government and opened to the public in 1979.

TREKKING Continued from Page 1

I enjoy visiting places with links to literary or historical events, especially when they are located in scenic and picturesque settings. It was on the Alpine meadows above Maienfeld, under the jagged crags and peaks of the Falknis Mountain, that Spyri set much

of her story of Heidi. It is a place Spyri would have known well from the times she spent in Jenins, and she used her knowledge of the area to create the settings for her novel. It is not known to history whether she used any specific child as her model for Heidi, but it is likely that she based her novel’s characters on people she knew or met in the area. The hill above Maienfeld is a great place for a trek, and I spent almost a full day explor-

ing along the trail leading from town up to the high meadow. The trail climbs through a thick forest that gives way at times to open expanses of grass and wild flowers. All the while, the rocky peaks of the Alps loom high above the verdant landscape, their sheer cliffs of glacier-chiseled rock a seemingly inaccessible and unconquerable barrier. The weather was quite warm, and at several spots along the trail I was glad to come across fountains of cold fresh water from mountain gushing springs. At the top of the trail, there is a small rustic café in the middle of a wide-open meadow that is purported to be Heidi’s grandfather’s cabin. The Alpöhiwurst mit Brot und Hausgemachte Bünder Gerstensuppe (sausage and soup) lunch I had there was a welcomed repast after the long climb on the trail. From Maienfeld, which is located in the northern part of Graubünden Canton in southeastern Switzerland, I drove south into the higher mountains of the canton. I visited the town of Chur, Switzerland’s oldest town; and also Klosters, a ski resort that is famous for regularly hosting the vacationing British royal family. In Klosters, I rode the cable car to the top of one of the mountains overlooking the town. Maienfeld is also close to the Swiss border with Liechtenstein, and I spent a day exploring a few places there. I visited Vaduz, the capital city, and also the town of Balzers, where I toured the medieval Gutenberg Castle, perched on a spur of rock above the River Rhine. I spent my final day of the trip on the shores of Wallensee, a beautiful mountain lake midway between Maienfeld and Zurich. The clear blue water of the lake is scenically cradled by the mountain cliffs and crags that surround it. I spent some time walking along the shoreline and also drove up into the mountains for some great panoramic views over the lake. Almost any part of the Swiss Alps is a great place to enjoy spectacular mountain scenery and recreation, and the country that Heidi called home is no exception. If you have young kids, it is also a great place to introduce them to Johanna Spyri’s classic children’s novel. But whether you go there in search of Heidi’s story or you just want to shoot some pretty photos, it’s a great place for a scenic mountain getaway.
