Today's Chiefs: Embracing the Past and Built to Last MCPONs past and present talk CPO evolution By MCCS Michael Lewis and Terrina Weatherspoon, Defense Media Activity
Mid-September is arguably the most important time of the year to a U.S. Navy chief petty officer. This is when newly accepted chiefs are frocked during a time-honored pinning ceremony, when their plain khaki uniforms are transformed by the coveted fouled anchors. These ceremonies, which are held worldwide regardless of where the chiefs are stationed, are the culmination of the final piece of CPO 365. Although this process has changed names many times since the Navy's inception of the chief petty officer rank in 1893 the purpose has remained unchanged: to prepare first class Sailors to be the chief. The role of a Sailor has changed drastically over the past decades. In order to respond to ever-changing duties, chiefs determined that Sailors needed

to start training immediately upon selection to first class petty officer (FCPO). The training expanded from a six-week crash course to a year-long program geared toward constant and consistent
preparation. CPO 365 was born, a program that then- Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Rick West implemented three years ago. see TODAY'S CHIEFS Page 6

Support Site Recycling Program
By Capt. Scott Gray NSA Commanding Officer
Last weekend, the USNH Naples Preventive Medicine Authority declared NSAND Fleet Landing and Olde Mill Inn (Gaeta) drinking water non-potable. While current drinking water compliance and medical surveillance sampling tests have been within standards, a draft report of a recent sanitary survey of the Gaeta water system revealed that the water filtration and disinfection methods do not meet the stringent requirements outlined in the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act and the Environmental Final Governing Standards for Italy. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, the nonpotable declaration was made due to concerns that the Gaeta water system is currently not adequately protected. NSAND Gaeta personnel working and living in the Gaeta area are advised to continue to use bottled water for drinking, food preparation, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, and for pets, etc.. We have begun to provide 2 liters of bottled water per day to those personnel who work on the base. All who live in town should have a lease provision that their landlord provides bottled water for each private residence. Most risks associated with tap water can be reduced or eliminated by drinking bottled water. Additionally, to minimize risks, ensure your landlord follows the health protective provisions outlined in your lease. If there are those in Gaeta who have older leases that do not have the bottled water provisions, please contact Housing immediately so they can help modify your agreement. Those individuals who lease a residence that utilizes a water holding tank are reminded that the landlord is responsible for providing periodic cleaning to ensure the tank is properly cleaned and maintained. It is the tenant’s responsibility to ensure that the landlord conducts the cleaning and maintenance. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact the Housing office. For those aboard the USS Mount Whitney, the ship has a medical surveillance team and additional measures in place to test and disinfect the water, which provides an even higher level of confidence. These additional measures ensure the water onboard the Mount Whitney is completely safe to drink. Bottom line: This is a precautionary advisory only and there have been no known illnesses caused by the water in Gaeta. In fact, thousands of Italians use the water on a daily basis without issue. This is not an emergency but an effort to keep our personnel fully informed about the quality of the water in Gaeta, and to ensure all personnel are aware of any potential risks. While current testing does not indicate the presence of contaminates, inadequate water treatment could result in contamination which might cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches. It is important to note that these symptoms are not only caused by organisms in drinking water, but also by other factors. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, seek medical advice.
Support Site residents are requested to continue working to improve waste segregation. Wet waste, also known as compost, is being segregated at a very low rate and needs everyone's attention. Wet waste includes food, soiled paper towels, tea bags, biodegradable kitty litter, and any other biodegradable item. When taking waste to the collection sites, please only put non-recyclable waste or non-segregated waste in the black and green containers labeled "non-recyclable". Placing the wrong type of waste in recyclable containers contaminates the waste and requires the entire container to be disposed of as non-recyclable.

Blood of San Gennaro Liquefies Last Thursday the liquefaction of the blood of San Gennaro (St. Januarius) occurred at 9.41 a.m. in Naples. The Archbishop of Naples elevated the reliquary containing the blood of the Saint in front of a huge crowd waving white handkerchiefs. The blood is preserved in two glass vials and traditionally liquefies three times a year. The miracle also takes place on Dec. 16 to commemorate the 1631 eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, which is believed to have been stopped by the saint’s intervention, and on the Saturday before the first Sunday in May. The liquefaction process sometimes takes hours or even days. If the miracle does not occur it is thought of as a sign of impending disaster. Disaster happened at least on two occasions when the blood failed to liquefy: in 1527 when thousands of people died from the plague and in 1980 when about 3,000 people were killed in the earthquake that devastated the provinces of Avellino and Benevento. The first historical record of the liquefaction of the blood dates back to 1389. The saint was born in Naples and was the Bishop of Benevento when he was martyred during the Diocletian persecution of the church. According to the legend, his body and head were gathered up by an old man and taken to a safe place and a local woman filled vials with his blood.
Etruscan Tombs Discovered In the town of Tarquinia in Tuscany, which is in the heart of the Etruscan reign, Italian archaeologists discovered an Etruscan tomb containing the skeleton of a presumed prince who lived 2,700 years ago. The skeleton laid on a raised stone platform surrounded by clay pots painted with Etruscan motifs. Archaeologists also found gold jewellery and seals, as well as a lance, a javelin and other ceremonial objects owned by a person of royal status. The entrance to the necropolis was covered by a huge slab of stone, which archaeologists carefully removed. The last tomb was found intact more than 30 years ago, but it collapsed. The Etruscan civilization developed around seven centuries before Christ and the hills and valleys of southern Tuscany, including parts of Umbria and the northern part of Lazio, are full of Etruscan tombs, many of which are open to the public.
Mafia Fugitive Caught on Beach On a sunny beach in southern Italy, tourists were stunned when armed law enforcement broke cover and swarmed down upon a man who was a mafia fugitive. The man spent the last 20 years in prison after killing a policeman in 1991. He first received a life sentence, but it was later

reduced to 30 years. He was granted parole and went on the run. The man tried to provide a false ID card, but police handcuffed and arrested him while he was still in his swimwear and sitting on his beach towel.
Thief Calls Police after Becoming Stuck in Store In a town in the Naples province, a burglar entered a hairdressing salon at night trying to steal cosmetics when the electric security door broke and he was unable to leave. He didn’t know how to escape and didn’t have any other choice than to dial the police emergency number, asking for help. The police operator who answered the phone thought it was a joke, but sent patrol agents who opened the broken door and arrested the thief.
Naples Becomes Movie Set On Tuesday, Naples became the site for a film directed by Guy Ritchie. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is an adaptation of the American 1960s television spy series. Cameras were set up at the medieval fortress of Castel Dell’Ovo where approximately 400 cast and crew were working on the film. Some of the film’s scenes were also shot in Pozzuoli. Other locations include Rome, and London.

Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, Archbishop of Manila, celebrated a Catholic Mass at the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples chapel on Support Site, Sept. 21. Tagle’s visit marked the first time an active Cardinal visited the chapel. “This is a historic event for our base, and our chapel,” said Cmdr. Manuel A. Biadog, command chaplain. “His Eminence’s historic visit and message on board NSA Naples encouraged resiliency among Sailors and their families.” The Cardinal, along with 11 other priests from Pontificio Collegio Filipino in Rome, blessed more than 500 attendees including service members, Department of Defense civilians and their families during the evening mass. “Cardinal Tagle’s message of hope, trust and caring for others challenged his audience to do more for others who have not had the blessings of God’s Kingdom,” said Biadog. “I found Cardinal Tagle to be exceptionally gracious and humble,” said Edward Blakeslee, a Department of Defense civilian. “His visit brought a spectrum of Christians, Catholic and non-Catholic, together as one.” The event, which was created by a team effort from the Religious Ministry department and the Fil-Am Association of Naples, included a choir service by the Choir of San Rafaelle Archangelo, honor guard from The Knights of Columbus and a reception afterwards hosted by the Fil-Am Association of Naples. “All the work and preparation put into making this event a success was incredible,” said Blakeslee. “Cardinal Tagle’s visit to the Naples Filipino-American community was a huge gift and vindication of the spiritual blessings we receive daily from our own shepherds.”

Technology Expo Comes to Naples By MCC Travis Simmons, NSA Naples Public Affairs
Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples held its annual Technology Expo in the Bella Napoli conference center on Capodichino, Sept. 24. The event, hosted by the NSA Office of the Chief Information Officer, enabled base personnel the ability to see and discuss featured technologies with more than 20 exhibitors in attendance. National Conference Services, Inc. (NSCI) organized the vendors and technologies presented, which changes slightly every year. The Naples event was part of the international series, which also holds expos in the United Kingdom and Germany during the year. The rest of the year the expo travels around the U.S. “It’s open and free to everyone,” said Dayna Scavelli, from NSCI. “We’re bringing the event onsite to NSA Naples personnel who are able to
network with these companies from various industries so they can see what’s out there and what’s available.” “Part of our job is to reach out to personnel on base, to see what technology they’re interested in,” said Scavelli, highlighting how the expo fluctuates each year to stay relevant for customers and vendors. “We can reach out and bring those specific needs here.” Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Miguel Reyes, assigned to Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Naples, attended the expo with a coworker to look into what information it had to provide on fiber optics, cyber security and cloud computing. “We were interested in learning about all the new technologies the companies had to offer,” said Reyes. Some companies in attendance wanted to show existing consumers innovations in their products, help ensure there was full functionality while utilizing alongside NATO counterparts. “My main purpose is to bridge the gap between U.S. users and their counterparts overseas,” said Braden Eggerl, U.S. representatives from a Rohde&Schwarz. “I can let Sailors know that these products exist to make their job a little bit easier.”

The Royal Navy commemorates the success of the British victory at the Battle of Trafalgar by Admiral Lord Nelson on Oct. 21, 1805, by holding a formal dinner each year. This year the Royal Navy officers in Naples will hold a dinner on Friday, Oct. 18, which is open to all U.S. and NATO officers. “Every ship in the Royal Navy, which includes the Royal Marines, tries to commemorate Trafalgar,” said Capt. David Heley, NATO Response Force Permanent Team Leader. “We had spent years and years at sea practicing not just our seamanship and navigation, but our gunnery and our fighting skills,” said Heley. “The average British Man of War could outshoot its opponents 2 to 1 as far as reload. That was a significant factor at the time of Trafalgar, as well as other battles before and after.” The evening will include a formal service dinner in Mess Dress with a typical British five-course meal. The U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band will play at the event, which will also include a speech about Admiral Lord Nelson, a Loyal Toast to him and the singing of some sea shanties. “For several years prior to Trafalgar, Napoleon, who by then occupied a significant amount of the continental Europe, viewed Britain as a major thorn in his side,” said Heley. “We were at war with him because we had maritime dominance; we were interrupting significantly, his trade and we were lending enormous support from the sea and on land to his enemies.” Admiral Lord Nelson successfully commanded 27 British vessels against a Franco-Spanish Fleet of 33 ships of the line during the battle, which was the most decisive naval victory of the war. For more information on the dinner or for tickets, please contact Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Neve at 626-3644 or Cmdr. Mark Davies at 081721-3850.

panorama September 27, 2013 pletely halted while I attended those academies," said Ferguson. "I had one, maybe two NCOs training me in each course, and those instructors were also completely pulled from doing their usual missions in the Army. I walked away from [CPO 365] with a great deal more from a Mess that continued to handle its daily missions, as did I. There is nothing like the power of the Mess to train itself, take care of troops, and make things happen." One thing leaders need to understand is this is not supposed to be taking folks out of their commands all the time, said West. "This is about providing a venue and an opportunity to bring quality training sessions to the particular group - a building block," said West. "The sad thing is you can make FCPO and not receive any other formal classroom training on leadership. This is another way to invest in the growth of our enlisted leaders."

TODAY'S CHIEFS "CPO 365 was developed for a few reasons," said West. "First and foremost, it was brought forward to ensure our first class petty officers were more ready to enter the CPO Mess and to bring them alongside our CPOs early to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities to be successful. We continue to put a lot of responsibility on our first classes and CPOs and we need to ensure they are trained and updated on continuing bases." The program was initially a threephase training process that excluded FCPOs from participating in the second phase if they didn't pass their rating exam and then excluded them from participating in the third phase if they weren't selected for chief. It has now evolved into a two-phase process that allows all FCPOs to continue their training whether or not they were selected. When the E-7 results are released, FCPOs who are selected are allowed to start a series of specialized training sessions, in addition to the regular CPO 365 events, to help prepare them for their transition to chief. Despite criticisms of the many changes, CPO 365 is a step in the right direction. "At this particular point of time in our history, I believe CPO 365 provides us with the best training opportunity," said current MCPON Michael Stevens "However, I am also confident that in time CPO 365 will also change because that's what we do, we constantly evolve. I'll be a retired MCPON years from now and there will be a new name, a new process and new way of doing business to train our chiefs. I'll trust that it was put in place because the times that our future Sailors will serve necessitate that." West, who retired as the 12th MCPON in 2012, said "I made CPO in 1988. From where we were then to where we are now, we are absolutely moving in the right direction. Could it be better? You bet. It will continue to evolve as our great Navy moves forward and the collective mess combines their inputs." Despite the negatives, CPO 365 is designed to continue to deliver quality chiefs to the fleet. This process is built by chiefs, run by chiefs and truly focused on Sailor development. One of its main purposes is to put newly selected E-7s in direct contact with seasoned chiefs. This allows an expedited development of the new CPOs as well as a chance for them to interact with their mess and grow comfortable with their selection. "We are in a new era in with regard to training new chiefs," said retired MCPON Jim Herdt. "It's important for chiefs who were brought up in another process to not condemn or measure them.
Continued from Page 1
They are different, much like I was different from the chiefs who trained me. "Most people think that we have this process so chiefs can prepare CPO selects to join the Chiefs Mess. I believe that it's more than that," said Herdt, who served as the Navy's 9th MCPON. "This timeframe is set aside so chiefs worldwide are able to rededicate themselves and remind themselves of what being a chief is really about. It's like having a booster shot of 'Chief' every year." MCPON Herdt stated that without this process, we would be more like our sister services and have three separate senior enlisted ratings with no continuity between them. Army Sgt. 1st Class Mary
Ferguson was granted permission to go through CPO 365 while stationed at Fort Meade, Md., in 2011. After her first request was denied, MCPON West finally granted her the ability to participate, but only after she filed the correct forms and requests through her chain of command, wrote a point paper about how this process would benefit both her and the Army, and attended CPO 365 in its entirety. She was able to convince her Army leadership that participating in CPO 365 would make her a better Soldier. "Prior to [CPO 365] I had attended three different NCO education courses in the Army, each approximately three to six weeks in length. All of those were at academies with dedicated instructors. All of my normal missions com-
Ferguson agreed. "I loved CPO 365. I loved what it put me through personally, and I loved what I saw it do to my brothers and sisters. I do agree that it should be a 365-day process. I think a mixture of the two is great. Having that lead off time to cover Navy programs and procedures really helped. The whole process was so foreign to me, because it is so unlike anything we go through in the Army. But it was one of the best experiences of my life. I love the Army, and I've made some amazing lifelong friendships in the Army, been through some incredibly things with some folks, but nothing, absolutely nothing compares to that moment when somebody hears those words, "Welcome to the Mess!" ... it's monumental, it's motivating on a whole other level," said Ferguson. MCPON Herdt noted that arguably we are making better chiefs today than we ever have in the past. "Today's chief petty officers are no doubt taking the high road with
their training. They have the ability to be innovative and aren't afraid of change," said Herdt. "I'm so proud of today's chiefs. They don't understand how truly good they are at what they do. Their pride in appearance and physique and their leadership skill has never been better than it is today." Chief Hospital Corpsman Joe Santos, U.S Pacific Fleet's Sailor of the Year and a newly promoted chief, noted that a lot of information gained during Phase II can't be learned in a classroom setting. "An academy setting would truly take away from the importance of what it means to be called 'The Chief,'" Santos said. "Growing up in the Navy, I've always heard that chiefs are not born, chiefs are made by other chiefs, and I firmly believe the experience gained from Phase II prepares your mind to think, act and perform as a chief. You learn from each and every chief petty officer regardless of pay grade or whether they are active, retired or reserve." "CPO 365 is about our moment in history more than it is about my belief that this is the absolute right way to do it," Stevens said. "I believe it's the right way to do it today, but I certainly can't speak for the future." The Chiefs Mess has come a long way since its inception in 1893. No matter what the process is called today, U.S. Navy chiefs will continue to train their own and prepare them for the trials and tribulations of being and carrying the title "chief petty officer." "I think CPO 365 has been hugely successful, mostly due to the many CPOs who have embraced the concept and moved it forward," said West. "Of those groups that have embraced the concept you can see those messes flourish. I say embrace the brilliance of the past to forge the future. We simply can't be looking backward when it comes to training our Sailors. We have to determine what we can do and move forward at All Ahead Flank."
Learning to Make Fresh Tomato Sauce From Fleet and Family Support Center-Gaeta Full immersion in the Italian way of life occurred last Monday as participants from the Naples-Gaeta community learned hands-on how to make fresh tomato sauce with "Nonna" and "Mama" during a Fleet and Family Support Center workshop. Attendees learned step-by-step how to make their own bottles of fresh red tomato sauce. Several teams of participants were engaged at different stations, working hard at the different phases of the tomato-sauce making process. Station one had the responsibility of selecting only the best tomatoes and eliminating the bad ones. Station two had to carefully wash the tomatoes as station three was in charge of the first cooking of the tomatoes in a big pot full of boiling water on a wooden fire. Tomatoes were then moved to the squashing station, which transformed the cooked tomatoes into sauce. The sauce was then moved to the bottling line where other attendees had to make sure the bottles where closed and sealed. The last step was to cook the sauce again inside the bottles. Everybody moved from one station to the next getting the full understanding of traditional Italian tomato sauce preparation. Questions were answered throughout the day and another piece of the “Bella Italia puzzle was put together.

Career Navigator: Career Waypoints Are You Prepared Plotting Your Career for Disaster?
By MC2 Amara Timberlake, Defense Media Activity
Career Navigator was launched June 3 and is designed to help Sailors make informed decisions about their career. This is a major shift from the way the Navy has done business in the past because it puts career management tools at Sailors fingertips. The Navy wants to spread the word about these policy changes which is why Navy Personnel Command is deploying their fleet engagement team to talk to Sailors about the changes. These experts recently visited Norfolk to tell Sailors, their leaders and their families everything they need to know about one of the most important parts of Career Navigator; Career Waypoints Reenlistment or CWay. C-Way reenlistment deals with Sailors E-3 through E-6 with less than 14 years of active duty. "Career waypoints are, in a nautical term, if a sailor is navigating his or her career, there are different avenues to take or different waypoints to reach, to make that career decision," said Capt. Bruce Deshotel, the head enlisted community manager at the Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) in Millington, Tenn. C-Way is a sub-program of Career Navigator and Sailors will recognize some of the processes and language from PTS. "[It's] basically the reenlistment authorization, lateral conversion authorization, the reserve to active component, the active component to reserve, and the ability for reservists to request lateral conversion," said Chief Personnel Specialist Christie Cole, Career Waypoints leading chief petty officer. "It's all contained in Career Waypoints." The Navy has programs like C-Way to have the right Sailors in the right jobs at the right time. Cole compared the process to a bag of chocolate candy. "If I have a 200 count bag of M&Ms and I have 60 reds but I only have 3 blues, I need to somehow change those reds to blues," said Cole. "It's the same concept. I may have 322,000 Sailors in the Navy but if out of those I need 2,000 of them to be PR's , if I only have 1200 and I need 2000, where's that other 800 going to come from? Well, that's going to come from another rating that maybe has 3500 and only needs to have 300." Career Waypoints isn't just a new name for an old program. The principle of PTS remains but Cole says C-Way is a lot more Sailor friendly. "They get faster answers and they can make more educated career decisions at a sooner point," said Cole. C-Way allows Sailors to make decisions sooner so they're not being faced with the challenges of rotating or separating on short notice. Cole said the differences are that we have mandatory applications at a Sailor's projected rotation date (PRD) and soft end of active obligated service date (EAOS). "The reason that the applications are set up the way they are is because nine months prior to a PRD, the Sailor is in their window, so they're going to be communicating with their detailer for their next set of orders," said Cole.
A Sailor goes into their C-Way window 12 months before the PRD, which means they can begin to request reenlistment. With commanding officer’s approval and in an open or balanced rating, a Sailor shouldn't have a problem getting approval through the system to reenlist before the 9 month mark prior to their PRD. If they don't get picked up for reenlistment, they remain where they are stationed until 13 months before their EAOS. Then they get the 3-2-1 options. The 3-2-1 process begins 12 months before a Sailor's EAOS. They begin the process having three options: they can apply to reenlist in their own rate, convert to a different rate or transition to the reserve. The application receives four reviews. If it's not approved by the 10 month mark, the number of options is reduced to two; convert or go reserve. That application also receives four reviews. Once a Sailor hits the six month mark from their EAOS, they will only have the option to go reserve. That application is reviewed three times. In general, every rating is manned differently and every Sailor’s situation is different. The C-Way was designed to be more user-friendly. In PTS, sometimes a Sailor didn't know they could reenlist until six months prior to their EAOS which put them within the "Needs of the Navy.” That forced Sailors to fill critical billets whether or not it was their first choice. "Now they know at 10 months prior, when they go to talk to their detailer and making applications in CMS-ID," said Cole. "They know that they're staying in-rate, and they know they'll be able to reenlist." NPC is publishing a monthly manning snapshot on its website of all active enlisted ratings as well as full time support. Skill sets are divided into three categories: Open for rates less than 98 percent manned, Balanced for rates between 98 and 102 percent manned, and Competitive for rates more than 102 percent. Another perk of C-Way is the vast majority of first class petty officers in open rates will receive instant approval on their first reenlistment application. Officials say that soon, some balanced rates will receive the same auto-confirmation for E-6s on the first application. Deshotel said the enhancements to the Navy's enlisted career management system for Sailors are like looking in a crystal ball. "It shows them what they're up against; it shows them what the fleet is as a whole and how they fit in," said Deshotel. "It provides them information, that before, wasn't available to them without the career counselors." The NPC fleet engagement team will give C-Way presentations on board several ships in San Diego at the end of September and plans to visit more fleet concentration areas before the end of the year. Cole said the visits aren't just to get the word out, but also because they want to empower Sailors with the tools they need to succeed. "You have to be in control of your own career," said Cole. "The more you educate yourself on the steps you need to take to elongate your career, the better off you are." There are many resources out there for anyone with questions about Career Waypoints. The Career Navigator program is outlined in NAVADMIN 150/13. Visit the NPC website and click on Career Waypoints under Career Navigator. Sailors can also send their questions to career_waypoints@navy.mil or call 1-866-U-ASK-NPC to get their questions answered over the phone.
From American Red Cross Naples
September, designated as National Preparedness Month, is almost over. However; being prepared for an emergency or disaster is something that never ends. Here in Naples, whether it’s an earthquake, volcanic eruption or a house fire that threatens; all families need a disaster plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes so it’s important to plan in advance. Does each member of your family know a safe place to go in a disaster? How will you contact one another? How will you get back together? Do you know what to do in case of a disaster? This is where a family emergency/disaster plan comes in. This plan should at a minimum include: • A meeting place right outside the home in case of a sudden emergency like a fire or earthquake. • A location where everyone should meet if they can't go home. • An out-of-area contact who can help connect separated family members. All members of the household should work together on the emergency plan and each person should know how to reach other family members. You should also inquire about emergency plans at places where your family spends time: work, daycare and school, faith organizations, sports events and commuting. If no plans exist, consider volunteering to help create one. Talk to community leaders and others about how you can work together in the event of an emergency. You will be better prepared to safely reunite your family and loved ones during an emergency if you think ahead and communicate in advance. The Naples American Red Cross encourages the Naples community to assess and prepare for their local disaster risks. Use the resources available at www.redcross.org/prepare/disaster-safetylibrary. You can download a Family Disaster Plan Template that you can complete and share with family members. The Naples Red Cross is ready to help. Stop by the office in Admin II for information on what we have to offer and to obtain information about what to do before, during, and after emergencies and disasters. You can also contact the Disaster Action Team Chair at jeff.arter@redcross.org for more information.

First Classes Help Remove Debris from Naples Underground By IT1 Abel Aguirre, NCTS First Class Petty Officer Association
Members of the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Naples First Class Petty Officers Association volunteered at the Tunnel Borbonico, also known as Naples Underground, Sept. 14, where curators are restoring the tunnels and removing debris left from World War II bombings. The volunteers hauled dirt and rock from the tunnels, uncovering relics dating back to the reign of King Ferdinand II. "I found the volunteer work very gratifying,” said Information Systems Technician 1st Class Shaun Rush. “I really enjoyed working with the Italians and getting to work on something that had so much history. Clearing out the tunnels and discovering lost historical items was truly a once in a lifetime experience." These ancient tunnels, located in downtown Naples, date back to the monarchy of King Ferdinand II of Bourbon. The tunnels were originally constructed as the king's secret passage from the Royal Palace to the military barracks in Via della Pace, which is now Via Morelli. The tunnels would later act as a shelter for citizens escaping the ravages of World War II. During the war, areas above the makeshift

Systems Technician 1st Class Trayvon Filer. “We found a wide range of artifacts. Everyone should visit the tunnels and take a tour."

During the celebration of the life of Woods, the eulogies were rendered. His wife, Dr. Dorothy Woods, spoke gallantly about her husband's love of God and Country and exhorted her husband's fellow SEALs and all hands present to continue the fight and defeat the enemies of freedom around the world. A fellow SEAL Capt. Bill Wilson said, "Today is not a day of empathy. Tyrone fought for hours against the enemies and at his last moments of his life Tyrone was thinking about his family." Wilson, while looking at the flag-draped casket and a smiling photo of Woods, ended his remarks, "We respect and admire you fighting the enemy. You are our hero." "We don't know why these things happen, but we know of God's character and his loving ways; a lot of good things will come of this,” said Charles Woods, Tyrone’s father. “I am in peace with this as promised in the Bible in Romans 8:28. Tyrone is a solid Christian and a man of faith." To the very end of your lives, you both lived up to the SEAL code. You both served our nation well in the face of severe adversity and certain death. Thank you for your sacrifice and faithful service to God and country.

On a beautiful, crystal clear day in San Diego more than 600 people made up of SEALs, friends, and family members bid a final farewell to retired U.S. Navy SEAL Senior Chief Petty Officer Tyrone Snowden Woods. Chaplain Scott Adams and I paid respect, attended, spoke, prayed, and witnessed a dignified celebration of the life of Woods a year ago on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012 at the chapel of Naval Air Station North Island. Chaplain Adams served as host chaplain and I was requested to represent and minister to the Woods and De Guzman-Narvaez families. Woods was born and raised by his Bible-believing parents in Portland, Ore. He was a 1989 graduate of Oregon City High School. He served 20 years of honorable service in the Navy before joining State Department Diplomatic Security. In 2006, Woods was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" for valor for his actions against enemy insurgents in the volatile Al Anbar province in Iraq. He led 12 direct action raids and 10 reconnaissance missions leading to the capture of 34 enemy insurgents. In addition, he led 16 SEALs and 8 Iraq Scouts on a 50-hour, 800-mile mounted patrol that threaded through direct enemy fire and constant exposure to enemy mortar, rocket, sniper, and improvised explosive device which led to the capture of a high value Al-Qaeda facilitator. Woods’ decisive actions effectively suppressed the enemy attack and resulted in no friendly casualties. Woods also served in dangerous assignments with the U.S. State Department Diplomatic Security in Latin America before his assignment in Libya, which is where he lost his life along with three others, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. "If not for him, the 30 people inside the consulate would not have made it out," said U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as she described of Wood's death in a foreign policy magazine. When they came under attack, both Woods and fellow SEAL Glen Doherty immediately took up defensive positions trying to protect Ambassador Stevens and the U.S. consulate compound. Their heroism is extraordinary when you contemplate the odds they were facing. Woods and Doherty fought through the firefight, providing time for the other consulate employees to be rescued. In about two to three hours, they held off the
attackers under heavy and severe automatic weapons fire, including RPGs and mortar rounds hitting on their position around the consulate grounds. Eventually, these two brave heroes were overwhelmed by a numerically superior force and knowing they were certainly going to lose their battle. They both lived and died based in the Navy SEAL Code: 1 Loyalty to Country, Team and Teammate 2 Serve with Honor and Integrity On and Off the Battlefield 3 Ready to Lead, Ready to Follow, Never Quit 4 Take responsibility for your actions and the actions of your teammates 5 Excel as Warriors through Discipline and Innovation 6 Train for War, Fight to Win, Defeat our Nation’s Enemies, and 7 Earn your Trident every day

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Contact Connie Henderson, RLSO EURAFSWA liaison advisor, at 081-568-4639 for more information.

Lady Wildcats Extend Their Undefeated Streak By Victoria Krause
The Lady Wildcats volleyball team is the reigning European Champions for two years running and was also undefeated last season (20-0). The team traveled to Sigonella, Italy for two intense matches this past weekend, eventually coming out on top winning in four sets on Friday and defeating the Sigonella Jaguars in three sets on Saturday. The Lady Wildcats are off to a good start with a 2-0 record. Friday’s win in four sets was with scores of 2522, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20. Although it was the first match of the season, the Lady Wildcats did a good job keeping the intensity, which provided a good lead to start the games off. Senior Victoria Krause had 19 kills with many assists from sophomore Courtney Fukumitsu (19 assists) and Keylee Soto (18 assists). Senior Carina Cusumano wasn’t letting any ball
touch the floor, while junior Aundrea Hall, sophomore Leana Esperon, and senior Amilia Espiet dominated the front row in kills. Junior Aundrea Hall also dominated the backline with a total of 5 serving aces. Saturday’s match was even better as the Lady Wildcats dominated in three sets, keeping the Sigonella Jaguars under 15 points each set with scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-12. Fukumitsu and Soto were on top of their game again on Saturday with a total of 28 assists. Hall had 5 assists, Cusumano mercilessly defended the back row and Krause had 11 kills to help get the Wildcats to 2-0. Next weekend, the Lady Wildcats will play a series of games and defend their undefeated record against Marymount International School of Rome (MMI) at the Fitness Forum on the Support Site. Friday night's games start at 5 p.m., followed by the boys’ team. Saturday’s matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

to compete and eight participated in the Regatta of Nations. At the end of the series of races sailed in the Club’s 4.5 meter Bosun dinghies, Italy was followed in the final ranking by the United Kingdom, France, Portugal, Netherlands, Slovenia, the U.S., and Spain. The Italian team was comprised of Antonio and Gaetano Esposito, Paolo and Matteo Falzea, Chris Lambert and Maurizio Marletta. The NNYC is the only sailing facility available to the NATO
