Plan for Reduced Pet Care from Support Site Vet in July The Naples Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) anticipates a reduction in access to care starting in July, due a staffing shortage. VTF hours of operation will remain 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday; however, appointments and availabilities for surgical procedures will be more limited. Pet owners are asked to please plan accordingly. The VTF has a list of contacts for local care to assist community members who are unable obtain access to care from the Support Site clinic as quickly as needed. For the community’s general awareness, NSA Naples Security and NCIS personnel will conduct joint field training at Capo, June 6-7 and June 13-14. The field training exercises are scheduled to take place in and around the vacant BEQ building. Thus, any observed security activity in this area and during these periods is related to scheduled training. Community members will not be impacted and should not interfere with training evolutions. Fall Furlough Dates for Schools at NSA Naples The Mediterranean District office for Department of Defense Dependents Schools has announced the furlough schedule for regional schools. School Year 2013-2014 will begin as scheduled on Aug. 26; however, Naples Elementary School and Naples Middle/High School will close as a result of scheduled teacher furloughs on the following dates: Aug. 30, Sept. 6, Sept. 9, Sept. 16 and Sept. 23. Limited Room Availability at NGIS Due to Fall Renovation Room availabilities at Capo’s Navy Gateway Inns & Suites (NGIS) will be limited during late summer (i.e., end of August) and fall. The reduced capacity to accommodate guests will be caused by a scheduled room renovation project expected to last through October. Community members are advised to plan accordingly. AFN Announces Need for Off-Base Residents to Tweak Decoder Settings All off-base AFN decoder owners must change decoder frequency and net ID settings June 4-24 or they will be unable to receive AFN satellite radio and TV channels. AFN Europe is eliminating one of two satellite transponders, requiring off-base decoder owners to adjust their box settings. Reminder: Off-Base Residents Encouraged to Get New Digital Decoders All off-base residents who have not yet exchanged older models of AFN television boxes for new digital converter boxes are encouraged now to do so. Off-base residents who signed a lease through the housing center are eligible to exchange the older decoder boxes for the new ones at the Teverola Housing Warehouse. Now-June 13: Annual Maintenance on Fire Hydrants at Capo Public Works Department (PWD) is scheduled to complete annual maintenance on fire hydrants at Capo, June 6-13. June 7/10/11: Naples Tiger Sharks Summer Swim Program and Team Evaluations Naples Tiger Sharks will hold a summer swim program and swim team evaluations during the first two weeks of June at Capo’s indoor Fit Zone pool. Evaluations will take place on June 5, 7, 10 and 11. Children of U.S. military, civilian and NATO ID cardholders are eligible to participate. Swimmers 12 years old and under must demonstrate basic swim stroke skills and be able to swim two of the four competitive strokes for 50 meters without stopping. Swimmers 13-19 years old must demonstrate basic swim stroke skills and be able to swim two of the four competitive strokes for 100 meters without stopping. June 7: Motorcycle Safety Standdown at Support Site A motorcycle safety standdown will be held at Support Site on Friday, June 7, for all motorcycle and scooter operators. The daylong event will begin 8 a.m. at the motorcycle safety training range adjacent to the Navy Exchange parking lot. The hands-on training is scheduled to include a slow speed competition for larger bikes, various riding exercises, and group rides to destinations of choice. Each command is encouraged to provide a group leader for their riders and have a route planned prior to the standdown. June 7: Calling All Active / Inactive Eagle Scouts in Naples The Transatlantic Council (Europe) of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is establishing a database for Eagle Scouts in the region. June 8: Tiger Shark Carwash Fundraiser at Support Site Naples Tiger Sharks will be conducting a carwash fundraiser on Saturday, June 8, at the Fire Department facility on Support Site. Community members are invited to bring their cars from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Tiger Sharks will also offer grilled hot dogs and other refreshments. June 12: Summer Hours in Effect for School Age Care Playground / Pavilion Starting Wednesday, June 12, the School Age Care playground area (adjacent to the Support Site library) will be closed to community members from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. during weekdays except for Fridays. MWR will use this area for a summer camp program scheduled to run June 17 through Aug. 23. In addition, the pavilion area between the fire station and Youth Center will be closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during the same timeframe. June 13: Teen Pool Party at Support Site Teens are invited to the Water Safety Splash-Off at the Support Site pool from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13. MWR is joining with the Preventive Medicine Department at U.S. Naval Hospital Naples to coordinate this event, which is funded by the Michael Phelps Foundation. Commander, Submarine Group 8 is schedule to hold a change of command ceremony in this location. All personnel are asked to plan accordingly. Base security will tow vehicles left in the area during the time period reserved for the top-deck closure. June 20: NMCRS Baby Basics Class A monthly class on newborn care and other useful tips for expecting parents is scheduled to be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, June 20. The class is offered by Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) visiting nurses and is open to U.S. military, civilians and NATO ID cardholders. June 21: British Festival in Lago Patria The British military community is scheduled to host a festival called British Fete 2013 on Friday, June 21, at British Forces School and the new British Forces community center near the JFC base in Lago Patria. The festival will be held between noon and 5 p.m. All U.S. service members, NATO personnel, and their families will receive free entry. The event will include live music, barbecue, a magician, and other performances. Attendees are advised to park at the JFC base and access the school grounds by using JFC’s rear pedestrian gate. June 29: Festa Americana (Fourth of July Event) at Carney Park NSA Naples will hold its annual Fourth of July event at Carney Park on Saturday, June 29. Festa Americana will include a high-wire act, fireworks display, food booths, craft tables and more. All community members with park access are invited. MWR is currently looking for base-recognized, private organizations to sell items at food booths and craft tables. Volunteers are also needed to help run the event. Additional MWR Updates  Now: Registration is open for the “Rusty Guard” Lifeguard Recertification Course. Community members can sign up at the Fitness Forum’s front desk for the June 11-12 class at the Support Site pool. The class will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day. The cost per participant is $45. Students must provide proof of their current CPR pro/AED certification and a valid “due to expire” lifeguard certification. The cost for a family’s first child registered is $60. There will be a 20 percent discount for the remaining siblings. Participants ages 9-17 must attend a team assessment for both soccer and flag football. The team assessment is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Carney Park on Saturday, Aug. 24.  Now: Summer Day Camp registration (for children ages 6-12) continues at the Youth Center. Active duty and civilians with non-working spouses can register this week from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The camp is scheduled to run from June 17 to Aug. 23. The upcoming gymnastics season for youth will run differently from previous seasons. Children ages 5-14 will be placed in groups (e.g., Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3) based on level of experience. Parents will be given a placement form upon completion of the evaluation to hand in for summer registration. Registration is scheduled to take place June 10-17. Youth gymnastics classes are open to toddlers and children who are no older than 14 years old. The camp costs $35 per child, which includes four consecutive mornings of 45-minute classes.
