New Pedestrian Safety Policy on Capodichino NSA Naples Safety has noted an increased hazard to pedestrians using the crosswalk after being dropped off at the bus stop near Capodichino's main gate. Public Works is exploring options to enhance pedestrian safety in this area. In the interim, vehicles are prohibited from passing the shuttle bus while it is stopped to pick up or drop off passengers. Pedestrians should exercise caution when crossing the street at this location. There is no policy change regarding stopped buses at any other bus stop locations. Now- Feb. 6: Naval IG Area Visit Internet-Based Survey The Naval Inspector General conducts Readiness and Quality-of-Life Area Visits to Navy regions and activities worldwide. As part of the upcoming Naples IG Area Visit, all active-duty and Reserve Sailors and civilian employees are requested to participate in an internet-based survey to capture concerns and identify areas to improve readiness. The survey is scheduled to be active until Feb. 6. Participation is voluntary and responses are anonymous and kept strictly confidential. Feedback provided will help identify focus areas regarding quality of home and work life, and region support services. The survey can be completed by visiting www.secnav.navy.mil/ig/Pages/NaplesAreaVisit.aspx. New Volunteer Opportunity at Naples Elementary School Naples Elementary School is seeking active-duty service members, civilians and retirees who enjoy working with young children to volunteer for the school’s new mentoring program, Dolphin Buddies. Volunteers must be willing to commit at least 30 minutes to an hour per week, or every other week, to interact with small groups of children during lunch or recess. Dolphin Buddies will allow children to be mentored while playing games, participating in crafts or other organized activities. There is a one-hour mandatory training required to participate. Training sessions will be held Feb. 5 at 5 p.m., Feb. 7 at 10 a.m., Feb. 10 at 5 p.m., Feb. 12 at 5 p.m., Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. and Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. Register for Session 2 Group and Private Swim Lessons Register in person at the Capo Fit Zone pool for Session 2 Group Swim Lessons, which will take place Feb. 7, 14, 21 and 28. Lesson dates and times depend on age and skill levels. Cost is $30 per person for one session of four, forty-minute lessons. Private lessons are also available on Saturday mornings. Now- March 1: Naples Overseas Support Club Scholarship Applications Accepted Applications for the NOSC’s annual scholarship program will be available and conducted online from Jan. 26 until March 1. Two scholarship applications will be offered, but applicants may only apply for one. Scholarship #1 is the traditional NOSC scholarship that requires applicants to have a minimum 3.0 GPA, active-duty service members may apply. The new scholarship allows the NOSC to spread the wealth to more community members interested in furthering their education. Scholarship #2 is not open to activeduty service members and doesn’t require a GPA to be provided, but does require a letter of reference with the application. Now- March 31: Flooring Project at USNH Naples The U.S. Naval Hospital Naples on Support Site is undergoing a replacement project for corridor baseboards and waiting area flooring until March 31. Each day, various corridors and/or waiting rooms will be shut down, which will change traffic patterns and possibly increasing wait times at certain clinics. Please be mindful of this and follow posted signs throughout the hospital during this ongoing project. Jan. 30: Food Handler Course Taught by U.S. Naval Hospital Naples U.S. Naval Hospital Naples will be offering a food handler class on Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at JFC Naples in the Navy Element conference room. The class teaches food handling safety for individuals who will participate in temporary food events such as command fundraisers, social events, bake sales, or any other short term event that involves preparing and serving food. Jan. 30: International Festival and Silent Auction at Naples Elementary School The Naples Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) will be hosting its annual International Festival and Silent Auction on Friday, Jan. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. Entry is free and the festival is open to all U.S. and NATO ID cardholders. The silent auction raises money for programs and events that enrich the learning experience for elementary school students within the community. Volunteers are still needed to represent their state or country through food, dance, music, crafts, pictures, or any other way to share and educate others about the location. Donations are currently being accepted. Jan. 31: Polar Bear Plunge at the Support Site Pool Join a fun, freezing time at the Support Site pool for the 9th Annual Polar Bear Plunge. Program is open to 9 year olds and above at a cost of $10 per person. Commemorative Tshirts will be given to all participants. Register at the Support Site pool front gate on the day of the event at 10 a.m. Plunge will begin at 11 a.m. with hot chocolate and warm towels provided after the swim. Jan. 31- Feb. 1: Super Bowl Invitational Flag Football Tournament Cheer your favorite team to victory at the Super Bowl Invitational Flag Football Tournament to be held at Carney Park Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Feb. 1: The Ultimate Super Bowl Party at Strikers The Strikers Bowling Center is hosting a Super Bowl Party from 10 p.m. to midnight on Sunday, Feb. 1. Guests can participate in a bowling party with two hours of bowling, one cheese pizza, one pitcher of soda, and DJ music at a cost of $60 per lane (up to 5 people per lane). Each lane also receives one Official Super Bowl Program Booklet, one Football Helmet Hat, one 3D bottle opener and team color decorations. The Super Bowl kick-off begins at 12:25 a.m. with games, prizes (must be 21 years and above to receive prizes), and a Super Bowl buffet during the game. The football game will be shown on overhead TVs and on the massive drop down over-lane screens. Bus transportation is also available from Capodichino to the Support Site departing the main bus stop at 10 and 11 p.m. with two return trips scheduled 15 minutes and one hour after the game. Feb. 2: AFN the Eagle Changing to 107.0 FM AFN Naples will transition to a new radio frequency on Monday, Feb. 2 in an effort to better service the Support Site and the audience in the surrounding area. After Feb. 2, community members will be able to tune into AFN the Eagle on 107.0 FM. That frequency was used for AFN Power Network, which will move to 106.0 FM. As always, you can listen in with your AFN Europe smartphone App or online with AFN 360 at http://afn360.afneurope.net/afne_nap. Feb. 2- 5: Exercise Reliant Pulcinella 2015 NSA Naples will conduct a security-centric exercise Feb. 2- 5 that will involve the Capodichino, Support Site and Gaeta military installations. Announcements will be made in advance of key exercise events. As always, please follow the directions of Security and avoid interfering whenever possible. Feb. 3: ReNuLife Presentation for 12-Week Weight Management Program U.S. Naval Hospital Naples will be offering an alternative weight management program to improve nutrition and overall health. ReNuLife is intended to aid in weight loss and is brought to you by a multi-disciplinary health care team including doctors, a dietitian, nurses and corpsmen. To learn more about this 12-week program, come to the kick-off presentation on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 4:30 p.m. in the Support Site base theater. The program is free and open to all DoD and NATO active duty, dependents, retirees and affiliated civilians.
