USS Donald Cook Finishes Exercise Dogu Akdeniz 2017 By MC1 Theron Godbold

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) completed its participation in exercise Dogu Akdeniz 2017, November 14, 2017. While in Aksaz, Turkey, Donald Cook Sailors attended multiple planning sessions, a reception for participants and a press conference for Dogu Akdeniz. After departing, the ship then participated a tactical maneuvering exercise as well as surface, air and subsurface tracking missions between all participants. “Dogu Akdeniz provided an excellent opportunity for participating nations to engage in realistic maritime training to build experience, teamwork and strengthen our interoperability as we work toward mutual goals,” Donald Cook’s Commanding Officer Cmdr. Matt Powel said. “This exercise will continue to improve interoperability among the United States, our allies and partners, and increase our capacity to conduct the full spectrum of military operations.” The U.S. Navy’s participation in Dogu Akdeniz demonstrated that they are engaged, postured, and ready with credible forces to assure, deter, and defend in an increasingly complex security environment. “Dogu Akdeniz was a great success for the crew of USS Donald Cook,” Donald Cook’s Command Master Chief Jeremy

On the heels of peaceful municipal elections promoted by OSCE and safeguarded by NATO, I made my first visit to Kosovo as the newly appointed Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples. For 18 years, a U.S. Navy Four Star has commanded JFC Naples, responsible for the Kosovo Force (KFOR), charged with the mission of maintaining security, stability, and peace operations in Kosovo. The hospitality in Pristina was incredible and I appreciated the opportunity to see firsthand what NATO is doing in Kosovo. Italian Army Major General Giovanni Fungo, Kosovo Force Commander (KFOR), and over 4,000 uniformed service members from more than a dozen nations lead the peacekeeping effort every day. During candid discussions with Major General Fungo and during my visit here, I was able to see for myself why our mission is successful.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER

USNH Naples Dental Dept. Supports Local Veterans

By Capt. Todd Abrahamson NSA Naples Commanding Officer

Welcome back to those returning from travel and I hope everyone had a great Veterans’ Day weekend! Welcome also to our newest graduates of Area Orientation and new members of our base community. Many of you may notice that since the summer PCS season, we’ve added some new features and changed some aspects of the AO format. The goal of these changes has been to make the class even more informative and of course, more inviting to our new residents. To our newcomers and sponsors, if you have feedback on the process, please let us know. If you didn’t get a chance to fill out the feedback form at the end of AO, don’t hesitate to leave us an ICE comment online. With the holidays fast approaching, sending and receiving mail is a big priority here in our community. Please help our mail team at FLC Naples get your packages where they need to go by following all posted regulations. At all of our on-base postal locations, you’ll see posters listing correct packaging methods, holiday schedules and deadlines, and prohibited items. For example, did you know you cannot ship wine and other alcoholic items through USPS mail, and that all mail here at NSA Naples is X-rayed? Adhering to these rules is important all year round, but is especially crucial during the holiday rush. You can also find USPS mail regulations posted on our Facebook and Twitter accounts. With the holiday season comes wintery weather. Although Naples may not get as cold as it does in Norfolk, Groton or Everett, a lot of us will still want to turn our heat on at home. Our Housing Department has posted instructions to do so on their Facebook page, and we’ve shared it on ours as well. Please follow these instructions to turn your heat on if you live on Support Site, and if you have any issues, please call the housing front desk at 629-4466. If you live off base, ask your landlord how the heating works in your home. You can also call the front desk if you need further help. As always, thanks for reading the Panorama, the #1 newspaper in the Navy according to the Navy’s 2016 Russell Egnor Media Awards! For more information about NSA Naples, please follow us on Twitter @NSA_Naples and Facebook at facebook.com/NSANaples/ Buon fine settimana – and remain vigilant.

Truffles Worth Their Weight in Gold in Alba Alba is a city in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy, which is famous for its white truffle market, and annual auction. Thousands of gourmet pilgrims arrive there for nearly two months of tasting, buying and selling. Due to a recent drought, this year the truffle market price rose to €6,000 per kilogram. A buyer from Hong Kong bought 850 grams of white truffles for €75,000 ($87,500) at the Italian auction last Sunday. Truffles need rain and cold to thrive and during a summer of heatwaves and drought, the Italian truffle production fell by almost 30 percent over the past 25 years.

The cell is located beneath the Medici Chapels in Florence, a mausoleum for members of Florence’s most powerful Renaissance family. Historians believe that Michelangelo sought refuge in the tiny cell in 1530, when he was on the run after he betrayed his patrons, the Medici, by supporting a popular revolt against their rule. During the two months he spent there in the room, he drew sketches of human figures with Monopoly Game Based on City of Naples charcoal and chalk on the walls. HISTORY: USS ENTERPRISE COMMISSIONED

From U.S. Navy

The Navy’s eighth ship to bear the name Enterprise became the world’s first nuclearpowered aircraft carrier when she was commissioned November 25, 1961, at Newport News, Virginia. In 1954, Congress authorized the construction of the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the eighth U.S. ship to bear the name Enterprise. USS Enterprise (CVN 65), the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, commemorates a name that has been a continuing symbol of the great struggle to retain American liberty, justice and freedom since the first days of the American Revolutionary War. It is the eighth ship of the fleet to carry this illustrious name that is literally defined as boldness, energy and invention in practical affairs. The giant ship was powered by eight nuclear reactors, two for each of its four propeller shafts. This was a daring undertaking; never before had two nuclear reactors ever been harnessed together. As such, when the engineers first star-

ted planning the ship’s propulsion system, they were uncertain how it would work, or even if it would work according to their theories. Materials used by the shipyard included 60,923 tons of steel; 1507 tons of aluminum; 230 miles of pipe and tubing; and 1700 tons of one-quarter-inch welding rods. The materials were supplied from more than 800 companies. Nine hundred shipyard engineers and designers created the ship on paper, and the millions of blueprints they created, laid end-to-end, would stretch 2,400 miles, equivalent to the distance from Miami to Los Angeles. After years of planning and work by thousands the day finally arrived. At her commissioning, then-Secretary of the Navy John B. Connally Jr. called it a worthy successor to the highly decorated seventh USS Enterprise of World War II.

“The fighting Gray Lady, as it was called, served in such well-known battles as the raid on Tokyo and the Battle of Midway,” Connally said. “The new Enterprise will reign a long, long time as queen of the seas.” His words would ring true. More than 100,000 Sailors and Marines served aboard Enterprise during her 51 years of service, and she has been home ported in both Alameda, California, and Norfolk, Virginia. Enterprise set many records and milestones: She was the longest warship ever put to sea, and during sea trials, she exceeded 40 knots. Later, she became the first nuclear carrier to transit the Suez Canal and the first carrier to operate the new F-14 Tomcats. A veteran of 25 deployments to the Mediterranean Sea, Pacific Ocean, and the Middle East, Enterprise has served in nearly every major conflict to take place during her history. From the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 to six deployments in support of the Vietnam conflict through the Cold War and the Gulf Wars, Enterprise was there. On September 11, 2001, Enterprise aborted her transit home from a long deployment after the terrorist attacks, and steamed overnight to the North Arabian Sea. Big 'E' once again took her place in history when she launched the first strikes in direct support of Operation Enduring Freedom. After 25 deployments around the world and 51 years of active service, Enterprise was officially deactivated December 1, 2012, at Naval Base Norfolk, Virginia.

SPOTLIGHT: LT. CMDR. RYAN PONTON

Lt. Cmdr. Ryan Ponton, from Virginia Beach, Virginia, reported to U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples in November of 2016. Ponton is one of two active duty orthopedic surgeons within the Naples area. As one of his collateral duties, he is working toward implementation of the Global Trigger Tool (GTT) within USNH Naples. This is a DoD-wide program with a specific aim to further increase patient safety, specifically inpatient care. Currently, most of his free time is spent figuring out the nuances of parenting. He and his wife Jacquelyn had their first child, a baby girl named Reagan Paige, this past June. With the remaining amount of free time, he also enjoys long distance running and triathlons. In terms of short-term goals, Ponton has a particular interest in Hand and Upper Extremity (subspecialty within orthopedics), and so will begin a oneyear fellowship in this discipline in 2018. “Navy Medicine is a fantastic field to work in,” Ponton said. “Overall, you get to work alongside amazing people and provide care for fantastic patients. The same holds true for USNH Naples, with the addition of getting to experience once-in-a-lifetime opportunities outside the hospital on a regular basis,”

ENERGY CONSERVATION To BE(M) or Not to BE(M) From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

2nd NATO Signal Battalion Personnel Remove Old Gear, Install New Gear at Support Site Gym

The 2nd NATO Signal Battalion (2NSB) had nine personnel help out the NSA Naples Support Site gym with their weight lifting equipment refresh. There were only two gym staff members to remove the old weights, bars, and racks as well as unload and assemble all of the new equipment. The new equipment alone weighed approximately three tons (when accounting for the support frames and cable plates). The gym staff estimated it would have taken a month or more to move all of that equipment, but with volunteer help primarily from 2NSB it only took five days, which minimized any disruption to the greater community. The personnel who participated in the gym remove/install project were: Sergeant First Class Paul Joseph (DCM-A), Staff Sergeant Stephen Wallace (DCM-C), Staff Sergeant Gideon Abebe (DCM-C), SGT Jeremy Musni (DCM-C), SGT Robert Wengel (DCM-A), SGT Luke Bower (DCM-A), SPC Zach Sinclair (DCM-A), SPC Jacob Vick (DCM-C) and SPC Raul Hernandez (DCM-C). Naval Support Activity Naples needs your help to save energy. We spend approx. $12 million for energy each year. You are important for energy conservation. Small actions can yield big results. For example, if each person in the NSA Naples changed one – just one – incandescent 60 watt light bulb for a 15 watt CFL, we could reduce energy consumption by over 540 million of watt hours. Over the course of one year that’s the equivalent to producing enough energy to power 49 residential houses. To stop the energy and water waste NSA Naples has dedicated personnel, they are Building Energy Monitors. We refer to them as “BEM.” Each BEM has a designated area; the BEMs are the eyes for the Energy Department to discover water leaks and energy waste. Everyone can be a BEM; it is easy, and you don’t spend a lot of your time (approximately 15 minutes per month) to save water and energy and help your command to be more efficient. If you are interested in being a BEM, please ask your director, your supervisor, or your department head to be a part of Energy Program. The Energy Office will be happy to tell you more about becoming a BEM. For details call DSN 626-4027 or 626-1895.

NATO KOSOVO From page 1 Simply put, fully trained, ready, and capable troops – who understand the importance of our mission – make it possible. And what better measure of success than peaceful democratic elections! On October 22, 2017, more than 2,000 NATO-led KFOR service members provided a safe and secure environment during elections in which 19 municipalities elected a mayor in proportional representation – peacefully. No violence, a testament to the continuous cooperation of national leaders and civil institutions to improve their democracy. The mission here has integrated with the rich culture. I had the pleasure of meeting with Father Sava at the 14th Century Decani Monastery. In our discussions, we agreed that peaceful coexistence amongst all ethnicities in Kosovo is in the interest of every citizen. The coexistence must be thoughtfully maintained through collaboration and education. For example, two members of the Kosovo Security Force are studying as four-year cadets at the U.S. Military

U.S. Navy Admiral James Foggo, commander of JFC Naples, greets Italian Army Major General Giovanni Fungo, Kosovo Force Commander (KFOR), during Foggo's Oct. 26, 2017, visit to Kosovo. Photo by French Navy Chief Petty Officer Sebastien Laurent

Academy at West Point. This trip also marked my first meeting with the Deputy Secretary General Mrs. Rose Gottemoeller and a re-acquaintance with the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee General Petr Pavel. Understanding how our NATO troops interact and operate in operational conditions allows for us to make the right command decisions and provide insight on how NATO and the North Atlantic Council (NAC) can further contribute in Kosovo. Strengthening the “bridge” between the diplomatic and military sides of NATO can make a major

difference. It allows us to understand each other’s goals, wants and needs to accomplish the overall mission. Being able to meet each other in our current roles and exchange thoughts and ideas has helped to solidify our ability to aid one another. Overall, my experience in Kosovo was rewarding! I was able to see firsthand how our KFOR operates, meet key players in the decision making process and get to know my forces a bit better. Sharing this experience with Mrs. Gottemoeller, General Pavel, and the NAC reaffirmed to me that we are in fact, one team, #WeAreNATO.

How Do Planes Fly? From NASA

Airplanes are heavy. So once their airborne, why don’t they fall out of the air? Airplanes need four forces to fly. Lift is one of them. Four forces keep an airplane in the sky. They are lift, weight, thrust and drag. Lift pushes the airplane up. The way air moves around the wings gives the airplane lift. The shape of the wings helps with lift, too. Weight is the force that pulls the airplane to-

ward Earth. Airplanes are built so that their weight is spread from front to back. This keeps the airplane balanced. Thrust is the force that moves the airplane forward. Engines give thrust to airplanes. Sometimes an engine turns a propeller. Sometimes it is a jet engine. It doesn’t matter as long as air keeps going over the wings. Drag slows the airplane. You can feel drag when you walk against a strong wind. Airplanes are designed to let air pass around them with less drag. An airplane flies when all four forces work together. But, most airplanes need one more thing: They need a pilot to fly them!
