USS Donald Cook Finishes Exercise Dogu Akdeniz 2017 By MC1 Theron Godbold

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) completed its participation in exercise Dogu Akdeniz 2017, November 14, 2017. While in Aksaz, Turkey, Donald Cook Sailors attended multiple planning sessions, a reception for participants and a press conference for Dogu Akdeniz. After departing, the ship then participated a tactical maneuvering exercise as well as surface, air and subsurface tracking missions between all participants. “Dogu Akdeniz provided an excellent opportunity for participating nations to engage in realistic maritime training to build experience, teamwork and strengthen our interoperability as we work toward mutual goals,” Donald Cook’s Commanding Officer Cmdr. Matt Powel said. “This exercise will continue to improve interoperability among the United States, our allies and partners, and increase our capacity to conduct the full spectrum of military operations.” The U.S. Navy’s participation in Dogu Akdeniz demonstrated that they are engaged, postured, and ready with credible forces to assure, deter, and defend in an increasingly complex security environment. “Dogu Akdeniz was a great success for the crew of USS Donald Cook,” Donald Cook’s Command Master Chief Jeremy

Douglas, said. “The crew conducted themselves with the highest professionalism during the close quarter operations with our partner and allied nations. It was great to see the U.S. and our NATO allies’ ability to execute this successful exercise. Participating

in exercises like Dogu Akdeniz helps to enhance the professional relationships between everyone involved and helps to improve the communication and coordination between allies and partner militaries.” USS DONALD COOK Page 7

The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) had its first training session for a group of more than two dozen volunteers who will be part of running the new NMCRS Thrift Shop. Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples NMRCS Di-

rector Margaret Copson said she was optimistic that following this first training session, the Thrift Shop would be opening soon. “Hopefully we will open the doors and invite shoppers in the new NMCRS Thrift Shop sometime in January,” Copson said. THRIFT SHOP Page 7

By Adm. James Foggo Commander, Allied Joint Force Command Naples

On the heels of peaceful municipal elections promoted by OSCE and safeguarded by NATO, I made my first visit to Kosovo as the newly appointed Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples. For 18 years, a U.S. Navy Four Star has commanded JFC Naples, responsible for the Kosovo Force (KFOR), charged with the mission of maintaining security, stability, and peace operations in Kosovo. The hospitality in Pristina was incredible and I appreciated the opportunity to see firsthand what NATO is doing in Kosovo. Italian Army Major General Giovanni Fungo, Kosovo Force Commander (KFOR), and over 4,000 uniformed service members from more than a dozen nations lead the peacekeeping effort every day. During candid discussions with Major General Fungo and during my visit here, I was able to see for myself why our mission is successful.
