Rear Adm. Matthew A. Zirkle, chief of staff, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa (CNE-CNA), teamed up with Scouts BSA Troop 007 to make care packages for Sailors deployed aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), at Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy, Nov. 25, 2019. Before getting started, Zirkle addressed the scouts to talk about the importance of what they were doing for the Sailors. “When you’re aboard a ship, you can’t just go get the things you like to eat or drink whenever you want,” said Zirkle. “So we’ve gathered a whole bunch of goodies together to send to the men and women who are out on Abraham Lincoln, working hard to keep us all safe. Let’s make sure we make these packages extra special for them.” More than 30 youth ranging between the ages of 11 and 17 joined Scoutmaster Bob Adams and several other adult volunteers from the military community in putting together care packages for Sailors.

Standing NATO Maritime Group One Trains With Norway By Allied Maritime Command Public Affairs Office
Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) ships joined the Norwegian navyled exercise Flotex off the coast of Norway. This annual exercise takes place every autumn and trains the Norwegian navy in planning and executing tactical operations at sea in cooperation with NATO ships. Set near Tromso, with its breathtaking scenery of snowcapped mountains and the northern lights, Flotex kicked off on Nov. 18 and ran for two weeks. “Alliance collaboration throughout the North Atlantic
and seas off the coast of Norway is crucial for maritime situational awareness of all allied nations. It is a great opportunity for SNMG1 to participate in FLOTEX,” said Rear Adm. Edward Cashman, Commander of SNMG1, “It demonstrates and exercises the important ability for NATO forces to quickly and seamlessly integrate with national forces of all of the allies. This ability is a key to NATO’s commitment to the collective defense of all member nations and is key to NATO’s goal to deter and prevent conflict. “ STANDING NATO MARITIME GROUP ONE Page 7

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Todd Abrahamson NSA Naples Commanding Officer
The NSA Naples Holiday Concert is coming up! To celebrate our community stationed here in bella Napoli, the Commander, Naval Forces Europe (CNE) Band and NSA Naples are working together to spread holiday cheer to the whole community with a free concert at 12:30 p.m. at Teatro Garibaldi in Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Please note that the time has been changed from the original advertised time. I encourage all of our personnel, to include military, civilians, their families and our local nationals, to save the date on this one. It’ll be worth it to make the short trip to come see one of the best bands in the Navy play holiday songs for you and your loved ones. There is limited parking at the event space, but the USO is graciously donating a bus to take families from Support Site, to the venue, and back! Registration through the USO is required to ride the bus, and there is limited seating available. Please call COMM 081-568-5713, or DSNs 626-5713/6294903 to reserve your seats. You must be a U.S. ID card holder to use the bus. This concert is being held to celebrate all of your hard work, and I look forward to seeing you there. Festeggiamo tutti insieme! On Dec. 6, NSA Naples will be celebrating the "official" beginning of the holiday season with our annual Tree Lighting Ceremony! The event will be held in the Village Forum on Support Site from 3 to 9 p.m. We usually have over 2,000 people attend to help us celebrate the event. The event includes performances by La Terza Classe, the Navy Band, Naples Elementary School and Naples High School. There will also be a holiday market, food vendors and photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus. While taking a journey to the North Pole, attendees will be able to assist in judging the decorated Holiday Trees, which have been designed by private organizations around our community. This is all leading up to the main attraction, the lighting of the tree at 6 p.m.! I hope to see you all out there. Tomorrow, Dec. 7, is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. On that day in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Hopkins were informed that the Empire of Japan had attacked the American naval fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Following meetings with his military advisers, Roosevelt calmly and decisively dictated to his secretary, Grace Tully, a request to Congress for a declaration of war. When Roosevelt addressed a joint session of Congress and the nation via radio on Dec. 8, his words were stirring, forceful, and persuasive. The Senate responded with a nearly unanimous vote to go to war. Later that day, Roosevelt signed a declaration of war against Japan, officially bringing the U.S. into World War II. Please take the time to remember the attack on Pearl Harbor this weekend, and the American lives lost on Dec. 7 – a date which will live in infamy. We emerge from the aftermath of Pearl Harbor as a strong and united nation, one that lives on to this day as a global force for good. As always, thanks for reading the Panorama! Sir Paul McCartney to Perform in Naples For the first time in 29 years, Sir Paul McCartney will hold a concert in Naples’ Piazza del Plebiscito on June 10. According to his manager, the singer asked to play specifically in that piazza. The last time McCartney played in Naples was June 5, 1991 at the Palapartenope, alongside his late wife Linda. In addition to Naples, he will perform at the ancient walls of Lucca, Tuscany, June 13. Rome Hospital Transplants 3D-Printed Bronchus A 3D-printed bronchus was transplanted into a five-year-old child at Rome’s Bambino Gesu’ pediatric hospital. This was the first surgery in Europe of this kind, health officials said. The child had serious breathing problems due to the collapse of a wall of the bronchi, which does not allow sufficient oxygenation of the lungs. The surgery was carried out with sophisticated imaging and bioengineering techniques. Ancient Monastery Forced to Close A monastery in Sansepolcro, Tuscany, was forced to close due to lack of personnel. The 40-year-old mother superior fell in love and her only companion in the convent was an 80-year-old nun who was forced to move out because she was too old to run the convent alone. The ancient monastery went under a long renovation directed by the mother su-
perior who became a reference point for the local community. The monastery was not only a center of spirituality and hospitality but also a meeting place with 19 beds and 20 bungalows located in the woods Italian Parliament Requests Espresso for UNESCO Listing Italy is pushing for World Heritage recognition of its espresso coffee. The Italian parliament put forward Espresso as a candidate for a UNESCO listing. The Italians want espresso – a slug of black coffee served in tiny white porcelain cups and costing around one euro – to be inscribed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, a compendium of customs, carnivals, ceremonies and traditions from around the globe. There are also regulations regarding the type of cup (porcelain with a narrow bottom), amount of coffee in the cup (between 13 and 26 grams) and its temperature, between 90 and 96 degrees Celsius. Italy was successful two years ago in having the art of Neapolitan pizza-making recognized as a part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. “The art of the Neapolitan ‘pizzaiuolo’ is a culinary practice comprising four different phases relating to the preparation of the dough and its baking in a wood-fired oven, involving a rotatory movement by the baker,” UNESCO said in its official listing of the tradition. Italy has 55 locations on UNESCO lists, from Venice and the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum to the Amalfi Coast, the Dolomites and the historic centers of Rome, Florence, Naples and Siena.

SPOTLIGHT: ABH2 KYLEE PORTER Throughout the month of October, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 2nd Class (ABH2) Kylee Porter dedicated over 27 hours of volunteer service supporting programs such as Snack Attack, Teddy Bear Club, Area Orientation and more. Her positive energy and dedication to the USO, community and troops has made her an outstanding volunteer to have on our USO Naples Volunteer Committee and earned her the title of Volunteer of the Month for October 2019. Having started her USO volunteer service in Japan, USO Naples was excited to welcome her to our volunteer committee just this past June. In her first four months Porter put in over 77 hours of volunteer time, proving to be a large part of our USO team. “I chose to volunteer because I enjoy making a difference in my community, no matter where I go in the world,” Porter said when asked why she chose to volunteer with the USO. Volunteer opportunities through the USO and other organizations offer service members the opportunity to network within their community, which is one of the things Porter enjoys. “I love volunteering with USO Naples because I get to meet new people and build a community away from home,” she said. You will most likely see Porter volunteering at some of her favorite programs and events like Snack Attack and Teddy Bear Club. If you don’t see her contagious smile at a USO event, chances are she is traveling throughout Europe. “The less I’m at my house, the better!” she said. Her infectious and upbeat energy has warmed the hearts of USO staff and volunteers, and we are grateful for the unwavering support that she gives to our community. Please join us as we recognize and congratulate ABH2 Porter for her dedication to the military community and USO Naples!

NATO Mission Iraq Welcomes ENERGY CONSERVATION What is a Radioisotope Power System? New Commander From NSA Naples Energy Management Team
Story by NATO Mission Iraq Public Affairs Office
Major-General Jennie Carignan officially assumed command of the NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) from Major-General Dany Fortin at a Transfer of Authority Ceremony held at the Union III Military Base, Baghdad, Iraq on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019. Admiral James Foggo, Commander Allied Joint Force Command Naples, presided the ceremony in presence of special guests and mission members. "It is an honour to be here today as we recognize the accomplishments of NATO Mission Iraq, the hallmark of NATO’s enduring commitment to Iraq’s peace, security and stability. We have achieved significant progress with our Iraqi colleagues and partner nations over this past year, improving the capabilities and capacity of Iraq’s security forces to prevent the reemergence of the Daesh terrorist threat. Much has been accomplished and as we meet today’s milestone, as Major-General Fortin hands over to Major-General Carignan, we can look back with pride and forward with renewed commitment to this critical mission," said Admiral Foggo. Major-General Fortin was designated as the first commander of this new NATO Mission Iraq at the end of summer 2018 for a 1-year mandate. Announced earlier in June, Canada accepted to assume the leadership of the mission for a second year.
"Over this first year, our team of military and civilian members from the Alliance and partner countries as well as our local employees have dedicated themselves to this Mission and for that I’m grateful. Most important, we have established strong bonds with the Government of Iraq and its Ministry of Defence," said Major-General Fortin. The new commander, Major-General Carignan, recently arrived in Baghdad with her team. This leadership transition coincides with the beginning of a rotation through the civilian and military personnel of the mission after been deployed from 6 months to 12 months. "I would like to highlight the accomplishments of Major-General Fortin and his team since the inception of the NATO Mission in Iraq. They worked relentlessly in this noncombat training and advisory mission in support of Iraq with NATO and partner nations," said Major-General Carignan. Since fall 2018, the mission grew from a small team to a fully-fledged mission that provides advice on capacity building at ministerial level. In addition, advisory and training teams work on a daily basis with Iraqi partners in 12 military schools and institutions including Defence University for Military Studies. NMI is also synchronizing efforts with international partners for building an Iraqi sustainable military training system.
Radioisotope power systems (RPS) convert heat generated by the natural decay of plutonium-238 – a radioactive isotope – into electrical power. One type of RPS is a Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG). RTGs work by converting thermal energy into electrical energy through devices known as thermocouples. The natural decay of plutonium-238 produces heat that is then transferred to one side of the thermocouple. The temperature difference between the fuel and the atmosphere allows the device to convert this heat into electricity. The most current RTG model, the Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG), provides approximately 110 Watts of electrical power when freshly fueled. RTGs are built to last. Their sturdy and compact design make them an ideal energy source for remote operations. They can withstand the harsh environments and frigid temperatures of deep space travel for decades, have no moving parts, require no maintenance, and have proven to be extremely reliable. They have powered more than two dozen U.S. space missions including the Apollo missions to the moon, the Viking and Curiosity missions to Mars, the New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt and the Cassini mission to Saturn. In fact, some RTGs launched decades ago, are still in operation today like the Voyager mission that began in 1977. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) develops RPSs for NASA by utilizing the specialized facilities at its national labs. Oak Ridge National Laboratory provides the heat source materials and hardware. Los Alamos National Laboratory purifies and encapsulates the plutonium-238. Idaho National Laboratory then assembles, tests, and assures the final delivery of the RPS. Remember: You can use as much energy as you need just don’t waste it! For more tips on Energy Conservation call Gennaro Gargiulo or Electrician 2nd Class Marvin J. Hernandez at DSN 626-1895 or Comm. 081-568-1865.

MyNavy Family App Introduces Improved Services From Cmdr. Erik Wells Sea Warrior Program (PMW 240) Public Affairs
The Navy continues to focus on families with the latest update of the MyNavy Family app. First released in May, the free app has been downloaded over ten thousand times. “The app has done exactly what we intended which is to both inform families and encourage them to continue to provide feedback to improve the app,” said Amanda Burns, the MyNavy Family app product owner. The May release included 12 main content areas, Navy Spouse 101 Information, links to Naval Services Family Line website and other pertinent websites. Based on feedback from the initial release, the app was updated in June to include links for Spouse Licensure Reimbursement, Blue Star Families and Navy Gold Star Program. This month, the app underwent several improvements to include a new search feature on the "Welcome Screen" and three additional content areas. There is now sec-
tions on family financial planning, survivor’s resources, and parents and family members of Sailors. “Whether a spouse or family member is new to the Navy or they have been part of our family for ten years, it can be difficult to know where to turn for support,” said Perry Christiansen, lead policy analyst with the Family Readiness Program Office. “This app allows our Sailors and families to quickly find information and resources to let them navigate to find the information they need.” Additional links were added that help Sailors and their families during a permanent change of station move including a link to the Navy Lodge which offers safe, clean and affordable accommodations at 39 locations worldwide. From its inception, the app was built to provide an interactive user experience that contains relevant and timely information. “All of the apps we develop are updated on a regular basis to provide accurate information that

SNMG1 includes the flagship U.S. Navy guidedmissile destroyer Gridley and the Royal Norwegian Navy frigate Thor Heyerdahl. It is one of four of NATO’s Standing Forces on active duty that contribute to the alliance’s collective defence on a permanent basis. NATO’s maritime strength lies in the ability of the Standing Forces and National Response Force elements to rapidly join with high readiness, high capability national forces and task groups to deliver strategic effect. Regular training between these groups is a force multiplier and provides a collectively trained and interoperable capability that NATO can confidently deploy if necessary. SNMG1 is one of four standing maritime task groups composed of ships from various Allied countries. These task groups form the core maritime capabilities of NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF). They provide a continuous maritime capability to execute NATO missions across the spectrum of operations, demonstrate solidarity, and strengthen professional links among allied naval forces. Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) is the central command of all NATO maritime forces and the Commander MARCOM is the prime maritime advisor to the alliance. When directed by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), it provides the core of the headquarters responsible for the conduct of maritime operations.

Commander, U.S. Africa Command, Embarks USS Florida By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Jonathan Nelson
U.S. Army Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, commander, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and Rear Adm. William J. Houston, deputy commander, U.S. 6thFleet (C6F) and commander, Submarine Group (SUBGRU) 8 embarked the Ohio-class fleet guided-missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) for a two-day underway, Nov. 25 to 26, 2019. During the embark, Townsend was able to witness the daily life aboard a submarine and learn more about the missions of submarines deployed throughout the AFRICOM and U.S. European Command (EUCOM) areas of operations. “You spend long days doing things on this ship, and it may seem monotonous for some of you,” said Townsend. “But I would tell you that it’s very important work for [AFRICOM]. The president of the United States approves your missions. Trust me, what you’re doing here is really important for America and keeps America safe.” During the visit, Townsend held an all hands call where he pinned a newly-earned Enlisted Submarine Warfare Device onto Missile Technician 3rd Class Cody Spinks
and awarded his personal challenge coin to members of the crew. Florida, like other ships of its class, has two crews that rotate out at regular intervals, the “Blue” and “Gold” crews. This visit served to familiarize members of the AFRICOM staff with the ship as well as provide an opportunity for the ship’s current “Gold” crew and leadership to ask questions. “I think it’s important for Sailors aboard this ship to put a face to the name for who orders and approves some of the missions they are a part of,” said Houston. “Embarks like these provide a rare opportunity for the crew members to ask the questions that have been lingering in the back of their mind and for them to get a direct, face-toface answer. Florida recently hosted David Muir from ABC Nightly News and was excited to host another distinguished guest. “Hosting Gen. Townsend aboard this ship has been an honor,” said Capt. M. Seth Burton, Gold crew commanding officer aboard Florida. “This embark was a great opportunity to show our leadership, our incredibly capable platform, and our crew. My submariners appreciated the

opportunity to meet the new AFRICOM commander and to hear that their consistent hard work and efforts are highly valued.” Florida, a 560-foot submarine with 18,750 tons of water displacement, is conducting operations in the Mediterranean in support of AFRICOM and EUCOM. The third of four SSGN platforms, it is capable of conducting clandestine strike operations,
joint special operation forces operations, battle space preparation and information operations, SSGN/SSN consort operations, carrier and expeditionary strike group operations, battle management, and experimentation of future submarine payloads. C6F, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and inter-
agency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa. Where Did the Christmas Tree Tradition Come From? By Emily Donovan
Every year across the globe millions of Christmas trees are harvested, sold and placed in our homes. We decorate them, put presents under them and after the holidays, the trees are retired for the rest of the year. These traditions started long ago. For thousands of years plants and trees that hold their green color during the winter months have had special significance in several countries. The modern Christmas tree came from German tradition. Christian households often brought trees inside to decorate. Many believe that the first instance of a lit Christmas tree came about when Protestant minister Martin Luther saw stars shining through an evergreen and tried to recreate the scene for his family using lighted candles. America adopted this custom much later, originally denying their use because they were seen as pagan symbols. As a matter of fact, in 1659
a law was enacted outlawing the celebration of Christmas as anything other than a religious observance. Still, the tree won out, and by the turn of the 20th century Christmas decorations were being imported from Germany, and trees graced the homes of many American families. The tradition was accepted so quickly that by the 1940’s Christmas trees were springing up in town squares across the nation. The most famous of these trees may be the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in New York City. The Rockefeller Center tree was first placed in 1931. It was undecorated and placed by construction workers working at the site. Two years after that the tree was erected and lit with electric lights. Now the Rockefeller tree boasts an astounding 25,000 Christmas lights. Christmas trees are now grown in all 50 states, with 77 million new trees being planted every year.
