In the midst of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, Adm. James G. Foggo III, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa (CNE-A), and the U.S. Navy Memorial teamed up to dedicate The Lone Sailor statue at Utah Beach, June 6, 2019. The Lone Sailor is an iconic symbol of the Navy Memorial’s mission to Honor, Recognize, and Celebrate the men and women of the Sea Services, past, present, and future and to inform the public about their service. The statue at Utah Beach is the first one located outside the continental United States. “The newest location was chosen to honor the “Frogmen” of the Naval Combat Demolition Units and all of the men and women of the Navy who heroically served at Normandy to defend freedom for the United States and our allies,” retired Rear Adm. Frank Thorp IV, president and CEO of the U.S. Navy Memorial, said. In the predawn hours of June 6, 1944, they were the first Americans to set foot on to the shores of France as part of Operation Neptune. LONE SAILOR STANDS WATCH Page 11

t’s getting hot outside, and that means we need to start taking extra precautions against heat stress and heat exhaustion. I’m sure you’ve all heard time and time again about how important it is to stay hydrated, but it’s still easy to forget to bring along our water bottles on our adventures. I encourage you all to become more deliberate about your water consumption, for yourselves and for your families, as the temperature continues to climb. USNH Naples has the following tips for preventing heat-related illnesses: limit your time in the heat, stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, find shade, and to consume calories and electrolytes to replace what your body is using. Additional protective measures include: avoid the sun when it’s strongest (between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.), use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher, wear wraparound sunglasses that provide 100 percent UV ray protection, wear protective clothing, and use lip balm that contains sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. It is also important to note that young children and adults age 65 or older have an increased risk for heat-related illnesses. Have fun in the sun, but always have a plan. Congratulations to all of our Naples Elementary School 6th graders! This Wednesday, Naples Elementary School held the 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony in the Village Forum Courtyard to recognize the growth and achievements of the 6th graders. The 91 students are now Naples Middle High School Wildcats, where they will continue to be creative, independent problem-solvers in a dynamic world. For our remaining Naples area students: job well done for finishing out another academic year. I would also like to thank the school faculty and leadership for their hard work this year, and for their dedication to providing the best educational experience possible to our children. You truly shape and mold the students of today into the leaders of tomorrow. BZ on a very successful year. Speaking of success, there is something that we need to have a 100% success rate on: Sponsorship. The height of PCS season approaches, and with it comes a wave of new additions to our NSA Naples family. Moving overseas, especially to cities so different from those in the United States, can be an intimidating challenge. Reach out to your sponsoree early and see if they have any questions. If they have a family, be sure to ask the right questions to ensure they are prepared for school. If the family wants to live on base, work with housing to see what you can do to help them start the process as quickly as possible. Due to the summer heat I spoke of earlier, travel with pets could be restricted, and they may have to ship the family cat or dog at a later, cooler, date. When your sponsoree arrives with their family, take some time to show them around the city. Show them how to shop at the grocery store, where to find things off base, and how to get around downtown Naples. By making them more comfortable and providing the opportunity to reduce workload on arrival, you can reduce the stress associated with the move so that our newest families can quickly get settled and moving with their new lives in bella Napoli. As always, thanks for reading the Panorama! For more information about NSA Naples, please follow us on Instagram @NSANaples, on Twitter @NSA_Naples, and Facebook at facebook.com/NSANaples/ Buon fine settimana – and remain vigilant.

HISTORY: FLAG DAY

SPOTLIGHT: NC1(SW/SCW) ASHA A. CLARK By Gary Nichols NSA Public Affairs

The Birth of Old Glory from a painting by Percy Moran, circa 1917. Betsy Ross and two girls show the United States flag to George Washington and three other men. Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division From the Library of Congress

On June 14, 1777 – nearly a year after the signing of the Declaration of Independence – the Continental Congress officially adopted a national flag. The new flag not only replaced the British symbols of the Grand Union flag, it was a radical design departure, featuring 13 white stars in a circle on a field of blue and 13 red and white stripes (one for each state). Although it is not certain, many people believe the new flag may have been made by the Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross, who was an official flag maker for the Pennsylvania Navy. Both the number of stars and stripes

increased as new states entered the Union. However, in 1818, however, Congress enacted a law stipulating that the 13 original stripes be restored and that only stars be added to represent new states. There have been 27 official versions of the flag so far; stars have been added to it as states have entered the Union. The current version dates to July 4, 1960, when Hawaii became the 50th state. One-hundred thirtynine years later, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation on June 14, 1916, which officially established June 14 as Flag Day. Although not officially a federal holiday, the week of June 14 is designated “National Flag Week” during which the president urges U.S. citizens to fly the American flag.

Congratulations to Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples Command Career Counselor NC1(SW/SCW) Asha A. Clark who recently graduated from the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) during her tour at NSA Naples. Clark received not one, but two degrees during the graduation ceremony aboard Capodichino this past spring – a bachelor’s degree in psychology and an associate degree in general studies. Not only did she graduate with honors, she was also selected to be the student speaker during the ceremony. Clark, known to her close friends as “Empress,” was born in Kingston, Jamaica, where she spent her early childhood. When she was 11 years old she and her family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, until she joined the Navy in the summer of 2005. She has moved up the ladder from being an Undesignated Seaman onboard her first ship in 2005, to Boatswain’s Mate in 2011, and then Navy Career Counselor in 2014. Despite having challenging tours, Clark said the Navy has been a great fit for her, and she takes the “service” in service member seriously. She has both served – and been an example of fortitude and excellence – to the Sailors at her various commands. She has received five Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medals, one Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal and two Flag Letters of Commendation. After six years of back-to-back sea duty, Clark transferred to NSA Naples in June 2017, where she continues her quest of service and duty. One of the favorite quotes Clark likes to pass on to her fellow Sailors is by American self-help author Napoleon Hill: “Patience, persistence, and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.” Graduating with two degrees is an example of the perseverance she both preaches and practices. One of the things that Clark said she wanted from her Naval service was to attend college. During her graduation speech she noted that she had greatly underestimated the amount of time required for work, and at home, as the mother of two sons: Nicholas, who is eleven, and Daijonne, who is eight. Clark promised her sons that when she arrived in Naples nearly two years ago, she would attend college and complete her degree. She attacked that goal with zest, and by combining determination with hard work she fulfilled that promise. As she moved up in rank and responsibilities throughout her many duty stations, Clark has always placed her Sailors first. “I enjoy assisting Sailors in making informed decisions about their careers,” she said. Clark added that when she eventually retires, she hopes to return to Florida and continue her life of service to others by opening her own business as a child and family counselor.

Noble Jump Soldiers Commemorate D-Day From Joint Force Command Public Affairs

Members of the Allied Joint Force Command Naples (JFC Naples), 1 German/Netherlands Corps (1GNC) and 1st NATO Signal Battalion Deployable Communication Module Echo (1NSB DCME), joined the Mayor of Zagan, Andrey Katarzyniec and the Chairman of the Zagan City Council, Adam Matwijow, on a visit to the Prisoners Camp Museum “Stalag Luft III” to commemorate both The Great Escape and the 75th anniversary of the D-Day. The visit was a poignant occasion for to honor the soldiers who took part in the World War II amphibious operation, in Normandy. It also marked the resolve of those held in captivity at the time. The event strengthened the relationship between NATO and the local community. “We gathered here today, to remember a pivotal moment of the World War II,” said Greek Brigadier General Apostolos Doukellis. “Today we mark the sacrifice of all our fellow soldiers who died during the amphibious operation in Normandy,” “We also thanked, local authorities who participated in the ceremony and we

appreciate the outstanding support that they are providing to all the units currently deployed here for the exercise Noble Jump 19”. NOJU19 is an exercise which will test the rapid deployment capability of the NATO Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF). The VJTF is a technologically advanced, multinational force made up of land, air, maritime and Special Operations Forces components, that are rapidly deployable. Noble Jump 9 has deployed almost 2,500 troops in the southern west region of Poland. The first phase of the exercise began on May 24, when NATO alerted its VJTF. Within 48 hours, the VJTF’s “Spearhead” battalion was ready to deploy, and three days later the complete VJTF brigade was on standby. As part of the VTJF, a Spearhead Battalion is comprised of a German, a Dutch and a Norwegian company under German command. The mission of Allied Joint Force Command Naples is to prepare for, plan and conduct military operations in order to preserve the peace, security and territorial integrity of Alliance member states throughout Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) Area of Responsibility (AOR) and beyond.

● Close doors of rooms that are often not used to avoid cooling these areas. ● Close blinds and curtains during the day to keep your house or office cool. ● Turn off unnecessary lights and appliance to reduce the generation of excess heat. ● Use a fan to circulate the air instead of opening doors and windows. When the A/C is running and doors and windows are open, the system has to work harder to maintain a cooler temperature. ● Set the thermostat between 24-26 degrees Celsius (75-79 degrees Fahrenheit). ● Make sure you’re A/C is properly maintained. I have no doubt that he will bring his businesslike approach to his next assignment at the Pentagon.” Foggo presented Ishee with the Legion of Merit for his meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements while serving his role in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations. “Rear Adm. This has been a challenging job that requires a great team effort and a daily sense of accomplishments. I am most proud of the team who has answered these challenges during the past 680 days. MOUNT WHITNEY-BALTOPS

Page 1

“Much of the 48 years of Mount Whitney’s commissioned service has spent as the flagship for 2nd Fleet. We couldn’t be more excited about embarking Vice Admiral Lewis and his staff to execute BALTOPS 2019 from aboard the Mount Whitney.” BALTOPS is an annual joint, multinational maritimefocused exercise scheduled for June 9-21, 2019 with 18 countries represented and over 8,000 participants. It is designed to strengthen partner relationships, enhance flexibility and interoperability, and demonstrate resolve among allied and partner forces in defending the Baltic Sea region. The exercise will involve maritime, ground, and air forces to strengthen combined response capabilities necessary to ensure regional stability. “I am honored to be hosted aboard the USS Mount Whitney for the execution of BALTOPS 2019,” Lewis said. “This exercise is our collective opportunity to promote peace and security through cooperation, collaboration, interoperability, and an unambiguous display of strength in the

Baltic region, and the Mount Whitney’s capabilities make her the perfect platform from which to command the exercise.” Combined Task Force 162, commanded by Rear Admiral Andrew Burns, OBE, commander of the United Kingdom Maritime Forces and deputy commander of the exercise, also embarked Mount Whitney. Additional representatives from Carrier Strike Group 2, Expeditionary Strike Group 2, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, and Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center are also aboard in support of BALTOPS 2019. U.S. 2nd Fleet commands ships, aircraft and landing forces assigned in the North Atlantic and Arctic. Additionally, it plans and conducts maritime, joint and combined operations as well as trains and recommends certification of combat ready naval forces for maritime employment and operations around the globe. Mount Whitney, forward deployed to Gaeta, Italy, operates with a combined crew of U.S. Sailors and Military Sealift Command civil service mariners in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe and Africa.

It was the largest seaborne invasion in history and part of an overarching plan code-named Operation Overlord - the beginning of the end of World War II (WWII) in Europe, and commonly referred to as D-Day. “The Frogmen swam ashore to the beaches of Normandy to make them safer for the follow-on wave of Allied forces,” Foggo said. “The Lone Sailor statue is a reminder to honor and remember their bravery and to act as a link from the past to the present as we continue to protect the same values they fought to protect.” These Frogmen, the ancestors of today’s SEALs, came onto the beaches to dismantle and demolish mines and anti-ship barriers in preparation for the amphibious landing of the 1st Army Division on June 6, 1944. “This statue will serve as a reminder of the historic day the United States and Allies arrived from the sea to free the world from tyranny and repression, forging a lasting relationship with the people of

Saint- Marie-Du-Mont, the first city to be liberated in France during WWII,” Foggo said. The Lone Sailor statue stands on a plaza at the Utah Beach Museum overlooking the Atlantic Ocean from where the U.S. invasion force appeared on that historic morning. Although people come and go from this statue, the Lone Sailor will continue to serve as a universal sign of respect towards all Sea Service personnel for generations to come. CNE-A Fleet Master Chief Derrick Walters, a Navy SEAL, will participate in a swim that will emulate the journey the Frogmen took in the early morning of June 6, 1944. “It is an honor to be here for 75th Anniversary of DDay, but also to participate in a dedication ceremony that honors the Frogmen’s contribution and legacy is a once in a life opportunity and a very special moment for me and the Navy family.” The first Lone Sailor statue, the work of sculptor Stanley Bleifeld, was dedicated in October 1987. Father’s Day Fun Facts From NSA Public Affairs

● Father's Day was founded at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910, by Sonora Smart-Dodd. Her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran, was a single parent who raised six children. ● In 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. ● In 1972 President Richard Nixon made Father’s Day a permanent national holiday. ● The accepted spelling of Father’s Day has an apostrophe before the “S” because Mother’s Day came first and set the precedent because it was spelled with an apostrophe before the “S”. Grammatically, this means that Father’s Day is meant to celebrate only one father – your dad – rather than all fathers. ● Honoring fathers on the third Sunday in June may have originated in the United States, but it is hardly an Americanexclusive holiday. More than 40

● ● ●

countries around the world have designated a special day to honor fathers. In Italy, following Roman Catholic tradition, fathers are celebrated on Saint Joseph’s Day, which falls on March 19. The most popular Father’s Day gift is a necktie. Beloved author and father of Christopher Robin, A.A. Milne wrote “Winnie the Pooh” for his son. That story’s main character was based on Robin’s teddy bear, a gift he received for his first birthday. Milne and Christopher often visited the London Zoo, and their favorite exhibit was a bear named Winnie. Pooh was the name of Christopher’s pet swan. The only father-daughter collaboration to hit the top spot on the Billboard pop music chart was the 1967 hit single “Something Stupid” by Frank Sinatra and his daughter Nancy. ●The traditional flower for Father’s Day is a rose, which is often worn on a lapel. A red rose is worn if your father is living, and a white rose is worn if he has passed away. ● It’s widely believed that one of the worst movie dad’s of all time is Darth Vader – father to both Luke Skywalker and his twin sister Princess Leia.
