Corn Hole Tournament a Huge Success By Brenda Dye

The first Community Corn Hole Tournament was held the evening of April 5 at the Support Site Central Park. For those of you who haven’t heard of corn hole, it’s a game that involves tossing four corn-filled bean bags at a game board 27 feet away. The goal is to land the bean bag on the board for one point or into a six-inch hole near the back of the board for three points. There are several rules to keep the game both interesting and challenging and even fun terminology like “Cornado” and “Cornfusion.” The history of the origin of the game can vary, some say it began in Germany in the 14th century, but most consider it to have originated and then made popular in the Midwest. Corn hole tournaments are now a favorite event at tailgating events, the beach or lawn parties because it’s a game that all ages can play. Corn hole has become so popular, there are National Championships televised on ESPN. CORN HOLE Page 11

Beware of Cyber Threats at Home and Work By MC1 Daniel Barker NSA Public Affairs

The Department of Defense is actively taking steps to increase cyber security in an attempt to decrease the number of phishing or spear phishing email attempts. Photo by Gary Nichols

The Department of Defense is actively trying to decrease the number of phishing or spear phishing email attempts. Spear phishing is a targeted attempt to gather sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card information, by pretending to be an official source in an email or similar electronic means. The DoD has taken several steps including increased security presence at the enterprise email gateways, traffic coming in from or going to non-DoD locations is filtered through the email gateways. This helps to prevent unauthorized DoD information from making it out or a malicious email from getting in.

For example, a form containing a social security number sent via unencrypted email would be blocked at the email gateways. The majority of these are blocked before ever reaching someone’s inbox, however, some phishing or spear phishing attempts may eventually make it to a person’s email account. There are several ways to help safeguard against these. “I think the primary lesson all newcomers and family members should understand is the fact that regardless of their age, pay grade, or status, everyone has something of value which can be exploited,” Terrance Winn, cyber security specialist at NSA Naples, said.

On National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day, Americans “salute the selfless service members throughout our history who gave of their own liberty to ensure ours, and we renew our commitment to remaining a nation worthy of their extraordinary sacrifices,” President Barack Obama said in his proclamation designating April 8 as National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day. “Under the flag of the United States, generations of women and men, united in a common cause greater than themselves, have served to defend the ideals that bind us together as a nation and that preserve our country as a beacon of hope and freedom around the world,” the president said.

Gratitude for POWs’ Sacrifices “In wars and engagements since America's founding, brave patriots have experienced indescribable suffering as prisoners of war,” Obama said. “Often physically and mentally tortured, starved, and put through the worst most of us could imagine, these heroes are owed a debt we can never fully repay, and their families – who exhibited tremendous fortitude in the face of grueling uncertainty – are worthy of our profound gratitude.”

XO’S CORNER By Cmdr. Jay W. Driskell NSA Naples Executive Officer

This past week was a well-deserved Spring Break for many of our service members and families and it was also a great work week. It seemed a bit more quiet and felt like a slower pace on both Capodichino and Support Site with the kids out of school and folks on leave. Even the boss, Capt. Carpenter, was able to enjoy some time away and a short European vacation, so I get the opportunity to write this week’s column. The weather in April has so far been a great mix of sunshine and warm temperatures. The Driskell family is definitely enjoying the sunshine and getting outside a bit more. The winter sports season has ended and Spring sports are well underway. I love to hear the sound of the bats clinking and gloves popping at baseball and softball practice. We watched some exciting events at our first track meet last weekend at the Naples Middle High School stadium and it was really fun seeing the runners, ‘Coming around that corner!” as our dedicated all-sports referee and announcer, Chief Music loves to shout. April also happens to be the month of the military child and here at NSA Naples we are very fortunate to be stationed in a location that supports families and allows many of us to be with them every day. The month of the military child was established to underscore the important role children play in the Armed Forces community. There are approximately 2 million military children, ranging in ages from newborn to 18 years old; 1.3 million military children are school-aged. Care of military children sustains our fighting force, and strengthens the health, security, and safety of our nation's families and communities. I like to think of our families as the foundation of our military force. So, take some time this month to celebrate and recognize the role your children play in our military community. This month you may have noticed more construction work around the installation than usual. I am happy to announce that this is part of the year-long Department of the Navy Great Green Fleet initiative that demonstrates the sea services effort to transform its energy use. As one of the Secretary of the Navy’s key energy goals, the purpose of the GGF is to make our Sailors and Marines better warfighters, able to go farther, stay longer and deliver more firepower. Secretary Mabus chose the name Great Green Fleet to honor President Theodore Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet, which helped usher in America as a global power on the world stage at the beginning of the 20th Century. The GGF will usher in the next era of Dept. of Navy energy innovation. The centerpiece of the Great Green Fleet is a Carrier Strike Group (CSG) that deploys on alternative fuels, including nuclear power for the carrier and a blend of advanced biofuel made from beef fat and traditional petroleum for its escort ships. These biofuels have been procured by DON at prices that are on par with conventional fuels, as required by law, and are certified as “dropin” replacements that require no engine modifications or changes to operational procedures. How cool is that! Think about your own energy use this year, talk to your military children about conservation, energy savings, and the three RRRs (Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse) and how we all can make a difference. Have a great weekend, be safe, get outside and enjoy all that life in Southern Italy has to offer!

NAVY HISTORY: NAVY CRUISERS ASSIST TITANIC SURVIVORS By Gary Nichols NSA Public Affairs

On April 15, 1912, Navy light cruisers USS Chester (CL 1) and USS Salem (CL 3) sailed from the East Coast to escort RMS Carpathia, a Cunard Line transatlantic passenger steamship, which had rescued survivors of the Titanic disaster, to New York. A few hours earlier, about 10 p.m. on April 14, 1912, the “unsinkable” White Star steamer Titanic struck an iceberg about 400 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada, and sank in about three hours. Despite sending out numerous pleas for help via their wireless, it would be two hours before anyone realized Titanic was in dire peril, and six hours before help arrived. As the mighty ship sank, people scrambled into the few available lifeboats. Those who couldn’t make it into lifeboats tried to survive by swimming in the chilly waters of the North Atlantic. Meanwhile, Carpathia was sailing from New York City to Europe. Her wireless operator had missed early, frantic distress messages from Titanic, as he was off duty at the time. Shortly after midnight Carpathia received Titanic’s distress signal. The Ship’s skipper immediately set a course toward Titanic. At full speed it took her four hours to reach Titanic’s last location. Unfortunately, Titanic sank before Carpathia arrived, taking the lives of more than 1,500 of her passengers and crew with her. While making a routine cruise off Nantucket, the Navy ordered Chester to inter-

Chester and Carpathia. At 4 a.m. Carpathia arrived on scene. After carefully navigating her way through the same dangerous ice fields that had claimed Titanic just a few hours earlier, Carpathia plucked 705 survivors

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ first safety rule about car seats is “always use a car safety seat.” And although for many this may be second nature, unfortunately, it is not always the case. from the lifeboats. Those who were in the water had already perished. Throughout the remainder of the night both Navy cruisers helped relay Carpathia’s wireless transmissions with updates and requesting assistance upon their arrival. The fact that this once “unsinkable” ship sank from a collision with an iceberg – and in a short time – made it clear that better and stricter maritime standards needed to be implemented to prevent another disaster at sea. The 1912 Report of the U.S. Navy Hydrographer, along with British and American Boards of Inquiry recommendations, were incorporated into the 1914 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. These required that every ship have lifeboat space for each person on board, and that lifeboat drills be held. An International Ice Patrol was established to monitor icebergs in the North Atlantic shipping lanes. It also required that ships maintain a 24hour radio watch, and improved general safety regulations aboard ship. Within a decade, both Chester and Salem both performed daring duty during World War I. Sadly, within a decade, these two heroes of the Titanic disaster were decommissioned. On June 10, 1921, Chester was decommissioned at Boston Navy Yard, and on August 16, 1921, Salem was decommissioned at Mare Island, Calif.

Committee, a reminder is often necessary. In both encounters, the driver said the infant was crying and was being held for comfort. Crying will not kill a child, but even at low speeds, the impact of an unrestrained infant or child can lead to serious injury or death. In fact, for children from ages one through 14, motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death -- far exceeding all other causes. For information about proper car seat use, visit the American

Academy of Pediatrics car seat guidelines page at http://aap. ogr/ family/carseatguide.htm and if you are concerned about installing the seat properly, get instructions at http://www.seatcheck.org Remember: Driving on or off base with an infant or child unrestrained is not only irresponsible, it is against the law and, more importantly, puts the child’s life at risk. If you need further help or information, please see your child’s physician or the staff at FFSC.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month Stephanie Vidaurri, LCSW

April has sprung, bringing warmer, longer and brighter days. Within the military culture, the month of April represents several worthy causes including; Month of the Military Child, Sexual Assault Awareness Prevention, and Child Abuse Pevention. Child Abuse Awareness was awakened during the late 1800s with a New York case that involved on-going physical abuse of a 10-year-old girl named Mary Ellen McCormack. Mary Ellen and (her adoptive mother) gained notoriety because at that time, there were no laws to protect children from cruelty. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took the case to court on the basis that Mary Ellen was a “human animal” and therefore entitled to protection. Clearly, we have come a long way since the 1800s but this history serves as a reminder for us to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect. Statistics provided by The State of

Hawaii documenting confirmed cases of Child Abuse and Neglect within military families during 2008-2012 revealed a decreasing trend (2008 had 106 while 2012 had a total of 45). However, these are cases that were not just reported but actually confirmed. The reported numbers double with 2008 having a total of 223 reported cases and 2012 having 198. Hawaii offers a unique perspective as it is home to all branches of service, but be mindful that these numbers are specific only to our military families. These confirmed cases of abuse and/or neglect show us that one of our own has been victimized. That victimization in Hawaii documents: 3 fatalities; 1 with permanent disability; 10 defined as “serious,” and 48 victims who required treatment. This year’s campaign targets the importance of supervision for our youth in stating “Children Thrive when Supervised, Safe and Sound.” I encourage all Naples families to be mindful of this, given our false sense of security when living on a secured installation. As monitors account for 70 percent of the PCs energy use, it’s always better to turn them off when at lunch or at meetings. Myth: It’s better to leave a PC running because continually turning them on and off wears out the equipment. Truth: Regularly turning a PC off not only saves energy but also extends the machine’s life due to a reduction in mechanical wear. Manufacturers now recommend that users turn off their machines when not being used. Myth: PCs and monitors automatically go in to sleep mode. Truth: You need to activate the PCs energy saving functions. Myth: The radiator is cold so the heating must be off. Truth: The heating isn’t necessarily off. Where a building heating system or radiator is thermostatically controlled the radiator may go off because the office has reached an optimal temperature (19 degrees Centigrade). The heating will automatically come back on if the temperature drops.

Energy-Saving LED Lights Replacing Old Costly Sodium Bulbs By MC1 Daniel Barker NSA Public Affairs

Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples is replacing outdated High Pressure Sodium bulbs in street lamps this week with solid-state lighting (SSL) as one of many efforts at the base to reduce energy-related costs at the installation. As energy is critical to the Navy’s ability to fulfill its mission, NSA Naples is using efficient energy technologies at the base to act as a force multiplier. As energy costs currently represent approximately half of the installation’s budget, reducing those costs helps to free up money for operations. Solid-state lighting uses LEDs, or light emitting diodes, that produce light at the same quality and brightness as incandescent or fluorescent lighting, but uses less energy over a longer lifespan. The Navy worked to ensure that this type of lighting also meets military specifications for use both ashore and aboard ships. As the lifespan of LED lighting also exceeds that of traditional lighting, LED lighting also helps cut down on maintenance costs. “Conventional lights are replaced with LEDs (light emitting diodes) for

several reasons. LEDs are more efficient, to produce 800 lumens of light, an incandescent bulb consumes 60 watts, a CFl (compact fluorescent) 13 to 15 watts, and an LED only 6 to 8 watts,” NAVFAC Assistant Regional Manager Daniel Lougen said. “LEDs produce virtually no heat, requiring less safety protective accessories. LEDs last six times longer than CFLs and over 30 times longer than incandescent bulbs. While the initial cost of an LED can be five times, or more, greater than that of a CFL, in the long run it is a prudent energy saving investment.” The transition to LED lighting is one of many initiatives taking place throughout the Navy both ashore and at sea. Using LED lighting at sea saves approximately 1.8 megawatts of energy. For U.S. Navy ships, this translates into around one million gallons of marine diesel fuel saved per year. At NSA Naples, LED lighting may be one of the most visible changes, but it is just one of many energy conservation measures being instituted by the command. For example, in 2010, solar panels were installed atop a parking garage at Capodichino. With a capacity of 300 kilowatts and the ability to generate 345,000 kW

hours per year, this system produces enough energy for an average of 35 U.S. homes. The installation also has sensors in buildings that will shut-off the lights, more efficient appliances, and conduct mandatory energy conservation briefs at area orientation for new arrivals. The LED lighting project at NSA Naples Capodichino, estimated to save approximately 140,000 kWh, which translates to a savings of about $30,000 per year, with a 10 year payback. Considering that the lifecycle of LED lighting (11 years) is more than three times longer than old lighting system, which only lasted about three years, NSA Naples is projected save an estimated $410,000 during the lifecycle of this project. As a facility that uses operating procedures, energy efficiency and distributed generation technologies, NSA Naples is a Great Green Fleet (GGF) installation. Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus named the Great Green Fleet to honor President Theodore Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet, which helped usher in America as a global power on the world stage at the beginning of the 20th Century. The GGF is ushering in the next era of Navy energy innovation and highlight the benefits of en-

National Nurses Month – Thanking the Past and Present Gretchen Jucha American Red Cross, NSA Naples

April is National Nurses month and the American Red Cross wants to recognize and express our gratitude to all nurses, and to share our story for everything our volunteer nurses have done for more than a century. Nurses are an essential part of the Red Cross team, aiding lines of service in multiple capacities as they uphold the values of the Red Cross mission around the world. Almost 30 years after the American Red Cross was founded, Jane Delano, RN, was a national leader in the nursing community and started the Red Cross Nursing Service in 1909. These nurses were the first public health nurses as well as the first to aid the military during World War I and World War II. Today, thousands of staff and volunteer nurses carry on the Red Cross Nurse Creed, written by Lorna Trott. Trott believed helping others is an obligation rather than an option. “To bring comfort to those who are in trouble, to alleviate suffering, and to conserve life is my mission,” she wrote. “Wherever disaster calls there I shall go. I ask not for whom, but only where I am needed.” Here in Naples, we had the opportunity to learn more about some of our Red Cross nurses who help the community by volunteering their time and skills, carrying the beliefs that Trott instilled in

this organization years ago. Katarina Johnstone is a volunteer nurse at Naples Elementary School. She has been a volunteer since 2005 while in nursing school; she assisted on-site with Hurricane Katrina and fires in San Diego by helping set up places for victims of disaster to stay as well as providing medical attention. Now here in Italy with her husband and two children, she comes in every week to help young patients and assist the school nurse using her years of experience. Danny Chacon is a military spouse and veteran, previously serving as a Navy Corpsman before becoming an RN in May 2014. He assists in the ambulatory procedures unit and the post anesthesia care unit while leading instruction for First Aid, CPR, and AED classes. With more than 700 hours of volunteer service since October 2015, his

contributions as an RN are endless. Stephanie Broughton is an RN volunteering in the occupational health clinic at U.S. Naval Hospital Naples. Before arriving here, she worked in the cardiovascular unit at the Mayo Clinic. A wife, mother, and full-time student she never fails to give back to her community every week. She has been a certified First Aid, CPR, and AED instructor since last May, adding to her many roles in the community. These three are the epitome of Red Cross nurses through their dedication, service and selflessness. Though we celebrate nurses throughout the month of April, they deserve recognition and appreciation all year long. From the American Red Cross, we thank our nurses and all those who support nursing for everything you do. Nurses truly make a difference.

During the tournament MWR served hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages to 22, two-person teams, who competed for three hours to find out who would be the ultimate champion. Once the sun went down, game boards were illuminated by portable lights so the remaining undefeated teams could battle it out to see which one would be the first to reach 12 wins. In the end, three undefeated teams walked away with trophies. Third place went to David and Brenda Dye of the “The Dye-Hards;” second place went to Ed and Caroline Cannon of “The Lucky Charms;” and first place went to Jacob Grgurich and Quinn Pifer of Team “PITLAND.” “This is exactly what we had hoped for when we put together this event, community members coming together to enjoy each other’s company in a competitive and fun atmosphere,” MWR Community Recreation Director Chris Kasparek said. “This was just the first of what will become a regular occurrence on the installation.” If you missed out on this evening of fun, check out the 2016 Captain’s Cup Athletic Program, the MWR Volcano or the Naples MWR Facebook page to see what future events are available. Many MWR programs are FREE or have a minimal cost, and if you aren’t an expert at a sport or have never even played it before, that’s OK. Several of the people who participated in the Corn Hole Tournament had never tossed a bean bag before and they had a great time playing and meeting people from their community. POW DAY from page 1 He added, “The values of honor, courage, and selflessness that drive our Armed Forces are particularly acute in those who have been taken as prisoners of war, sustaining them through days, weeks, and sometimes years of profound hardship endured for the sake of securing the blessings of liberty for all.” America's former prisoners of war – and all who don our uniform to keep us safe – have helped to make the United States the strongest and most prosperous nation in the history of the world, Obama said. “Our eternal obligation is to care for them and uphold our everlasting promise to never leave our men and women on the battlefield behind,” the president said. “Let us reaffirm our adherence to these ideals and honor our former prisoners of war by paying them the gratitude and respect they deserve.” CYBER

“If we look at many of the successful phishing and spear phishing campaigns over the past fiveplus years, the adversary is preying on some of our fears. Many times the phishing or spear phishing email contains information about an account they may have which has been locked out or disabled and asks us to click a link to reactivate the account. When it comes to anything which affects our pay, we are quick to click on a link to fix whatever the purported issue is.” The adversary doesn’t have to be a computer expert or have advanced hacking skills; all they need is the basic ability to send an email with an embedded attachment or hyperlink which appears to be from a legitimate site. Winn advises that everyone have at least one throw-away email address in addition to their normal address. “When registering on the plethora of websites, it is recommended to use the throw-away email

address, this way if the organization sells their information or has it stolen, their normal email address will not be flooded,” Winn added. “Avoid using .mil addresses on commercially available websites. If registering with a .mil email address, it must be a .mil website. This will help to eliminate the threat of spam reaching their government mail account.” A few months ago the department moved to restrict the ability of sending hyperlinks via email. The formatting was removed so only the text remains. This prevents a malicious website from being hidden inside a legitimate hyperlink. The use of embedded hyperlinks is still problematic for home users, though so pay attention. Continue looking for emails containing attachments to be digitally signed. If you receive an email with an attachment but no digital signature and do not know the individual, it is best to delete without opening. Additionally, do not

open any emails from unknown individuals, both at work and home. Ensure you are using a “clean system” by installing or updating antivirus applications and signature files along with operating system and application patch updates. Ensure you are using good passwords at home, use different passwords for each account, make passwords difficult to crack, do not use names or words that can be found in any dictionary (including foreign languages), do not use keyboard patterns, etc. While the DoD has invested heavily in protection capabilities to prevent unsolicited emails from reaching an email inbox, they still manage to get through occasionally. This is where the role as a protector/defender comes into play and you get to decide whether the bait is taken or prevented. This makes you the single most important link in the cyber chain ... the “cyber defender.”

DAILY TOURS

Tickets and Travel Will Get You There By Chris Kasparek NSA Community Recreation Director

The National Football League, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Plant, Madame Butterfly, Romeo and Juliet, and Tuscany all have one thing in common: You can purchase your tickets or excursion in our Tickets and Travel Office today. Tickets and Travel, your former ITT offices, are here to assist you in all of your planning for your future trips throughout Europe. Do you have 10-plus friends who have been thinking of going to Tuscany, Capri, Venice, the Italian Alps? Come in, let us help you and your friends plan the trip of a lifetime. Last week we released our NFL trip packages for October. Your initial look at the package may have surprised you, as you figure out how to make it work financially. But, if you look a bit deeper, you’d discover that you can set up a payment plan for this grand adventure in London. This tour also includes much more than a football game; it includes your flights, transfers, lodging, ticket to the game, tickets to the London Tower and St.

Paul’s Cathedral and a windshield tour of London. Discover other amazing programs we offer. For example, hike the Amalfi Coast, kayak off Positano, learn to sail, rock climb, scuba dive, the list goes on, and on, and on ... The dilemma – or challenge – is not what will I do; but rather how will I get it all done before I PCS in two or three years. Mark your calendar for the following dates of upcoming local events: April 23 - Spring Sports Opening Ceremonies and Flea Market at Carney Park April 27 - Brian Miller – Magician, Comedian, Mind Reader, Musician – at the Village Forum Courtyard at 6:30 p.m. April 29 - Take Back the Night at Support Site Central Park from 5:30 to 8 p.m. May 6 - Armed Forces Olympics at Carney Park May 11 - Craig Karges – Illusion and Magic Show at Support Site May 14 - Customer Appreciation Day to include a concert at Central Park in the evening For details on these or any other great MWR programs call DSN 629-7911.
