From Field to Table: Lessons in Neapolitan Cuisine By Niki Leiva

Twenty-five adults and children from the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples community recently participated in the first of three cooking experiences hosted by Fleet and Family Services Center (FFSC) at a farm – Giardino dell’Orco – coowned and operated by Chef Pippo Carnevale on

the bank of Lago Averno. Carnevale, a 2009 graduate of the Istituto Professionale per i Servizi dell’Enogastronomia e dell’ Ospitalita’ Alberghiera Lucio Petronio. (Professional Institute for Food and Wine and Hospitality

Services) in nearby Monterusciello, welcomed the participants then gave them a tour of his farm, complete with a history lesson surrounding this unique location, along with a discussion of the menu for that day.

A native of Pozzuoli, Carnevale worked at restaurants here in Naples and in the United Kingdom from 2009 to 2015. He began teaching cooking classes in 2016. With his experience in the UK Carnevale spoke to the group in perfect English. FFSC HOSTS COOKING CLASS Page 11 CAPTAIN’S CORNER. . . . . . . . . 2

Navy Releases New Career Sea Pay Guidelines From Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs

The NAVADMIN provides new guidelines for CSP entitlement criteria for various operational units and staffs. The changes include: ● New guidelines for special boat units, expeditionary boat units, and landing craft utility units (LCU) to receive daily CSP rates. ● All afloat staffs, with the exception of 7th Fleet and Carrier Strike Group 5 staffs, will now earn daily CSP, only for days spent either underway or embarked for eight continuous hours. CSP provides a special payment in recognition of the greater than normal rigors of sea duty, the arduous duty involved in long deployments, and the repetitive nature of assignment to such duty. For more details on changes to CSP, read NAVADMIN 143/18 at http://www.npc.navy.mil/

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Todd Abrahamson NSA Naples Commanding Officer

LGBT Pride Month is celebrated by the Department of Defense every June to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of its lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender personnel. We gain a strategic advantage through the diversity of our total force and create a culture of inclusion where individuals are drawn to serve, are valued and actively contribute to overall mission success. This includes our active duty and reserve service members, and our civilian employees. Here at NSA Naples our community will be celebrating these personnel through events like the Naples Area Multicultural Heritage Committee (MCHC) LGBT Color Run. This 5K run will take place on June 21st at 4 p.m. at the Support Site Central Park. Everyone is welcome to participate in celebrating the advancement of diversity within the Department of Defense and showcasing the health, happiness, and cohesiveness of the fleet. June is also a good time to remind ourselves about safety on base. The summer months bring newcomers and increased opportunities to get active outdoors. Because of this, it’s even more important during this time for people to make sure they’re educated on our installation’s safety and security policies. Following the speed limit, wearing a helmet while riding your bicycle, skateboard, or scooter, and staying alert while walking, running, and driving are key rules our security department enforces. Please help keep our community safe by making sure you and your families are following them. Please also feel free to politely remind others to follow them. When our whole community works together to make safety a priority, we all benefit. For more information about any of the installation’s instructions or policies, please visit our website at https://www.cnic.navy.mil/naples/ Staying safe also keeps us healthy enough to enjoy the amazing recreational opportunities here on base. Between all of the fantastic trips and tours our USO and MWR teams offer, the concerts played by the U.S. Naval Forces Europe band, and the facilities at Carney Park, there is no shortage of things to do with your friends and family this summer. By the way, did you know NSA Naples is home to the only golf course in the world located inside an extinct volcano? Carney Park is home to a nine-hole golf course, a driving range, campgrounds, and an Olympic sized pool. Whether you’re new to the community or you’ve been here a while, make sure you contact our public affairs team so they can keep you updated on all the great activities planned at these and other NSA Naples locations. Just send them an e-mail request to be added to the PAO Notes at pao_naples@eu.navy.mil As always, thanks for reading the Panorama! For more information about NSA Naples, please follow us on Twitter @NSA_Naples and Facebook at facebook.com/NSANaples/ Buon fine settimana – and remain vigilant.

Getty Museum to Return Ancient Greek Statue to Italy A fourth-century B.C. Greek statue known as the Victorious Athlete was found in the

summer of 1964 in the sea off Fano on the Adriatic coast of Italy. It was bought by the Getty Museum for some four million dollars in 1977. An Italian judge ruled that the statue must be seized wherever in the world it is, rejecting the museum appeal. In November 2007, an agreement ruled that the museum would return 40 pieces to Italy out of the 52 requested. The museum was cleared of wrongdoing in the case of the ancient Greek bronze statue which is one of the jewels of its collection. Italy has long claimed it was smuggled out of the country and has demanded that the Getty hand it back. AC Milan’s Women’s Soccer Team Competes in Series ‘A’ for First Time AC Milan’s women’s football (soccer) team will compete in Italian Serie A (“A” League) next season for the first time in the club history, following the example of clubs like Roma, Fiorentina and Juventus. HISTORY: BIRTH OF THE HOSPITAL CORPS From Bureau of Medicine and Surgery

On June 17, 1898, President William McKinley signed into law a Congressional bill authorizing the establishment of the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps. Although their name has evolved over the past century from Loblolly Boy to Pharmacists Mate to Hospital Corpsman, the core mission has remained consistent: to minister to the sick and wounded. Known by Marines and Sailors simply as “Doc,” Corpsmen have served everywhere the Navy and Marine Corps have served or fought since the Spanish-American War, and they are often the only medical support immediately available to Sailors and Marines at “the tip of the spear.” Since 2011, Corpsmen receive their basic medical training at Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. Those who serve aboard ships and isolated locations as the sole medical provider, receive additional training as Independent Duty Corpsmen; those who serve with the Marine Corps receive additional training at Field Medical Service School while those who serve with EOD, Dive and SEAL Teams receive additional specialized training. “No Marine has gone into battle without you. No ship or sub has gone underway wiU.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman with Marines from the 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment administers blood plasma to a wounded Marine at an aid station near the front lines on Saipan during World War II. thout you,” former deputy Navy surgeon general and retired Rear Adm. Michael H. Mittelman, said at the 115th anniversary celebration of the Hospital Corps two years ago. “You’re always in the thick of the battle and the main reason we have a 97 percent save rate on the battlefield. Your lineage is one of honor, courage and commitment.” The Hospital Corps, is the only all enlisted corps in the military. It consists of more than 25,000 active duty and reserve Navy hospital corpsmen, and is the largest and most decorated rating of all branches of the U.S. military. The first member of the Hospital Corps to be awarded the Medal of Honor was Hospital Apprentice Stanley Robert during the Boxer Uprising in China. To date, 22 Hospital Corpsmen have been award the Congressional Medal of Honor (nine of which were award posthumously), and more than 2,000 have been killed in action. In honor of their extraordinary duties, 20 Navy ships have been named after Hospital Corpsmen. Famous Hospital Corpsmen include John Bradley, who was with the Marines who raised the flag at Iwo Jima on Mt. Suribachi during World War II; “Lone Survivor” author and Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell; and the 11th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, Joe R. Campa.

Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Cameron Todd, from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has worked at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples for just over five months. As a dental laboratory technician, Todd is responsible for creating crowns, bridges, dentures, and other dental prosthetics for beneficiaries. It is a role he has been passionate about since before his enlistment. “I specifically wanted to be a dental corpsman,” Todd said. “In high school I participated in theater and loved to make people smile. As a dental technician, I make teeth for our patients to help restore their smiles. I like being able to give that level of comfort to all the Sailors, Airmen, Marines – everyone – we see here.” Outside of work, Todd has picked up the sport of fencing – an activity that runs in his family. His step-father was an Olympic fencer and Todd hopes to find more individuals in the community to spar with. Last month, Todd participated at the Rhone American Cemetery Memorial Day ceremony in Draguignan, France. Prior to being in Naples, Todd served at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base where he received a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (NAM). Todd’s favorite quote will serve him well during his tour in Naples; “The world isn’t in your books and maps, it’s out there.”

PCS – A Moving Game From Naval Supply Systems Command

We’re now in the peak PCS season, and Sailors moving this summer should start preparing now. Here is an important checklist to help you stay on track for your upcoming PCS move: q Start Early – HHG peak season runs now through August. Start early by going online at http://www.navsup.navy.mil/household to review your entitlements and responsibilities. To begin your move process, visit http://www.move.mil/ q Plan Alternate Move Dates, Just In Case – When scheduling pickup or delivery, select alternate dates in addition to your preferred dates. q Tell Utilities, Landlords – Be sure you have a confirmed date before you inform your landlords or turn off your utilities. q Minimize Changes – After the pickup date has been confirmed, only request changes in an emergency. Date changes can lead to delays, additional cost to the member, or the need to convert the shipment to a Personally Procured Move (PPM). q Be Reachable – Provide your personal phone numbers, cell phone numbers and personal email to the personal property offices at origin and destination. Include in-transit contact information, as well. q Time Moves Ahead of Vacate Date – Allow time for unforeseen problems and last-minute changes. q Sort Through Household Goods – Start sorting through household goods now and set aside items you have decided to put up for sale or donation. Service members must keep all shipments within their weight allowance or pay to ship the excess weight. For details about your weight limits, visit http://www.navsup. navy.mil/public/navsup/hhg/quick_ links/weight_allowance/

q Get Ready for – Pre-Move Survey – Once the service member initiates the move online, the shipment contract has been awarded and the transportation service provider (TSP) assigned, the TSP will contact the service member to schedule and perform the pre-move survey. Be aware the TSP will conduct a pre-move survey no later than three business days prior to the first scheduled pack date. The pre-move survey allows the TSP to establish a more realistic weight estimate, determine how many crew members to assign, determine the number of packing days needed, and determine what packing materials are needed and whether any special equipment is needed. All dates for packing, pickup and delivery are finalized between the service member and the assigned TSP. q Keep Records – Keep all hard copy and electronic records of your move details. The more information you keep, the better. Consider taking pictures of documents with your phone as a back-up reference. Email yourself reminders. Know and remember that minimum transit times for moves are determined by the Defense Travel Regulation. International transit times can be anywhere from 30-90 days, depending on the start and end locations. Of note, you should schedule separate days for each separate move. If multiple carriers are scheduled for the same day, there can be confusion on what items go with which shipment and you could be charged for an attempted pickup or waiting time as the carrier waits for the previous carrier to depart. Sailors with questions about household goods transportation and storage entitlements can contact the Navy Household Goods Customer Contact Center at 855-HHG-MOVE (855-444-6683) or send an email to householdgoods@navy.mil or household goods move information at http://www.navsup.navy.mil/household

ENERGY CONSERVATION Water Conservation – Numbers Don’t Lie From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Water is a crucial necessity for living organisms regardless of the species. It is available in large quantities but only a small percentage is consumable. Because it is rare, water conservation is essential to our survival. Water conservation does not seem to get as much publicity as energy conservation but the two sources tie in together and are as equally important. Water pumping, delivery and waste water treatment facilities consume a significant amount of energy. In some regions of the world over 15 percent of total electricity consumption is devoted to water management. Reality Check ● 70 percent of the world’s surface is covered by water. ● 97.5 percent of the world’s water is salt water. ● 2.5 percent of the world’s water is freshwater. ● Almost 68.7 percent of the world’s water is frozen in ice caps and glaciers. ● Only 1 percent of the total water resources on earth are available for human use. Water Conservation Tips ● Most authorities recommend that people drink eight, eightounce glasses of water each day, which is a total of 64 ounces of water per day (.5 gallon). At 365 days per year, that would be equivalent to 23,360 ounces or 182.5 gallons of water per year. ● Repair leaky faucets promptly. One faucet leaking one drop per second, can waste 2,400 gallons of water in just one year. That’s equivalent to 13 years of drinking water for one person. ● Install low-flow shower heads, toilets and aerators on kitchen and bathroom sink faucets to save water. They will cut water usage by as much as 280 gallons a month for a typical family of four. ● Shorten your showers. Each minute less you run the shower you could save 2.5 to 5 gallons each time you shower, depending on the type of showerhead you have. ● Don’t leave the water running when brushing your teeth. You could save as much as 9 gallons of water every time you brush. ● Repair “silent leaks” in the toilet. If food coloring put in the tank ends up in the bowl without flushing, it leaks. Repairing the leak will save up to 200 gallons of water a day.

Cultural Exchange with a Local Middle School From Naples Middle High School

Last month a group of middle school students from Italian classes at Naples Middle High School was hosted by some Italian students at their school, “Domenico Cimarosa” in Aversa. Domenico Cimarosa Principal Mario Autore welcomed us with a presentation on their school activities and then the school choir offered an amazing performance of “Va’ pensiero” from Verdi’s “Nabucco” to celebrate the event. The NMHS students attended some classes at Domenico Cimarosa and attended a presentation on the city of Aversa and learned about the Italian composer Cimarosa. They used their language skills, danced with their new friends and played volleyball together. At the end of the school day, our students followed their sponsors to their homes and had lunch with them. The welcome was incredibly warm and the moms prepared huge portions of delicious Italian food for their young American guests. Our students had thus the opportunity to be fully immersed in an Italian setting for a few hours and simply loved every minute of this learning experience. Later in the month the Italian students who sponsored our students re-

turned the visit at NMHS and spent a day with their American peers. They attended some lessons, learned about the American school system and participated in a pep rally. They were incredibly impressed by our school and loved learning about the

American cultural school routines. The group was accompanied by Aversa Mayor Enrico De Cristofaro, along with two council members, Alfonso Oliva and Francesco Di Virgilio. NMHS Principal Doug McEnery met with the representatives and com-

mended the solid collaboration between our two schools and the work that NMHS Italian teacher Roberta Pennasilico at NMHS English teacher Daniela Pelosi, at the Italian school, have been doing for our students and our cultural exchanges.

Fleet and Family Services Center recently hosted a group of 25 community members to a cooking class at Giardino dell’Orco – a farm – owned and operated by Chef Pippo Carnevale (middle) on the bank of Lago Averno. Photo courtesy of NSA Public Affairs

FFSC HOSTS COOKING CLASS

From page 1

He distributed baskets to each of the participants and explained about the produce and quantities they would need to harvest for the food preparation. Carnevale specified that only the quantity of food specific for one serving was to be picked. That way, students could more easily determine the correct amount to purchase when they make their own recipes at home. He also advised his students to only purchase produce they intend to eat immediately. “It’s great to see how Italians care so much for fresh produce,” FFSC Intercultural Relations Specialist Tiziana Cirillo said. “Italians say that food can heal you or kill you. We try to heal through our food.” Because fresh produce is such integral part of the Italian cuisine, Carnevale ensures that all food grown on his farm is raised without the use of chemicals or pesticides. Participants also learned more about this carefully managed farm along with the delicate ecosystem between plants and insects while visiting Il Giardino dell’Orco. FFSC carefully chooses its programming to help NSA Naples community members acclimate to life here in Naples. Guides like Cirillo help community members to discover and explore interesting and exciting destinations they might not find from travel magazines and websites. “The purpose of my trips is mainly for exploration,” Cirillo said. “When you travel, you can only appreciate a place if you explore it with local people.”

The next installment of this three-part opportunity will focus on the farm itself and will be well suited for children. Participants will learn more about organic farming methods and spend time planting seedlings throughout the farm. After, they will gather together in the kitchen to prepare another meal and to connect over their shared experience. Carnevale said he especially enjoys hosting courses for community members who recently moved to Italy and helping them to acclimate faster and understanding the Mediterranean diet and why Italians eat large meals. “It’s about integration to Neapolitan culture,” Carnevale said. “People are a sometimes a little lost at the beginning because we drive fast, we eat late, and we talk loud. I like to explain how we do things, specifically how and where we buy our food at specialty stores, how we make food and order meals at restaurants.” The second of three classes with Carnevale through FFSC is scheduled for June 18, followed by a third class in July. Space is limited to allow for a deeper connection to the food, the lessons, and the people. FFSC has many programs along with fun classes and trips that help introduce families and Sailors to learn about and appreciate the nuances of Neapolitan culture. For details regarding this informative cooking program and others classes, call DSN 629-6372 or visit their offices on the first floor of the Navy Lodge onboard Support Site.
