NSA Naples Master-at-Arms Selected for All-Navy Wrestling Team By Gary Nichols Naval Support Activity Naples Public Affairs

Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Schuyler Swanton, who is part of the Naval Support Activity Naples Security Department, was recently selected to be a member of the All-Navy Wrestling Team. Wrestling is more than just a part-time hobby for Swanton, who grew up in Springhill, Florida, a medium-sized city on the Gulf Coast, about 45 minutes north of Tampa. He wrestled at Frank W. Springstead High School, and he joined the Navy in the fall of 2012. His father had also served in the Navy as a Machinist Mate. Swanton said that not only did he want to follow in his father’s footsteps, but that he was looking for a transition into the workforce. NSA WRESTLER

Plans for Massive NATO-Norway Exercise Underway Story by U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Mark Patton

The most visible part of Exercise Trident Juncture 2018 is still some eight months away, but personnel from across NATO already have it on their mind. U.S. Navy Admiral James Foggo, commander of JFC Naples, visited various Norwegian locations and entities, February 26 to 28, 2018, to talk to Norwegian Chief of Defence Admiral Haakon Bruun-Hanssen and his subordinate staff and commands about exercise preparations. Foggo’s visit comes simultaneously with the deployment of the JFC Naples’ Operational Liaison and Reconnaissance Team, or OLRT, to Bodø, Norway. Some 35,000 troops from 30 NATO members and partners, along with 70 ships and about 130 aircraft, are estimated to deploy to central and northern Norway in October for the live portions of Exercise Trident Juncture 2018. Speaking at a forum on issues surrounding the president’s fiscal year 2019 defense budget request, the three service secretaries agreed on March 12, 2018, that the Defense Department’s most crucial need is continued investment in people. Army Secretary Mark T. Esper, Navy Secretary Richard V. Spencer and Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson told the Center for Strategic and International Studies that the American military’s most crucial advantage is its people and that investment must continue to attract and retain them. Kathleen Hicks of CSIS moderated the discussion. “At the end of the day, people are what makes everything work, and we really have to focus on this,” Spencer said. War for Talent The services will be in a war for talent with the private sector, other portions of government and each other, the Navy secretary noted. “We are all going to be looking for more people to do more things in a more intelligent manner,” he said. “We are going to have to figure out a way to adopt and adapt those people that we have.” Esper noted that the budget request supports the National Defense Strategy announced last month. CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Todd Abrahamson NSA Naples Commanding Officer

I want to thank everyone involved this week for their help in managing the water outage we experienced on Capodichino, especially the NSA Naples Public Works team. When issues like this arise, it is important to know there is a dedicated force ready to respond. From the Seabees working to repair the issue to the Emergency Management team communicating to our community via AtHOC, everyone pitched in. I want to also make sure everyone knows where to go for information in a situation like this. We of course post notices on Facebook and send communications through the Command Master Chief and Ombudsmen networks, but it’s also important that everyone has access to AtHOC notifications. Right now, AtHOC numbers have risen slightly, but we still need more people to sign up. This week’s PAO notes included an easy to fill out application form that you can e-mail to our Emergency Management department. This week also highlighted the importance of building managers. Building managers perform an essential role, here on Capodichino and Support Site, in maintaining situational awareness of and seeking out solutions for maintenance issues. If you are a building manager, please make sure you are regularly checking your spaces for issues that may require repairs like poor water pressure. Please also report those issues early and often to my Public Works team. If you are a tenant command and do no currently have a building manager, please make sure to designate someone as soon as possible. We’ve also unfortunately seen a recent series of DUI’s and alcohol related incidents on and off base. I want to make it very clear that whether you are a service member, civilian employee, or civilian dependent, this behavior is unacceptable. The legal limit here in Italy is a BAC level of 0.05% and every single member of this community is expected to follow that law. If you make a decision that puts members of our base and surrounding communities at risk, you will face a serious penalty. Next week, I would like to draw everyone’s attention to an event our Multicultural Heritage Committee will be holding on Thursday, March 22 at the Capodichino base Chapel at 1 p.m. This event will include speakers talking about the many contributions of female leaders in our military and society as a whole. Please take the opportunity to attend this important Women’s History Month event. As always, thanks for reading the Panorama, the #1 newspaper in the Navy according to the Navy’s 2016 Russell Egnor Media Awards! For more information about NSA Naples, please follow us on Twitter @NSA_Naples and Facebook at facebook.com/NSANaples/ Buon fine settimana – and remain vigilant.

Venetian Water Buses to Test Drive Environmental Biofuel The city’s water buses in Venice will run on environmental biofuel, made from used cooking oils, for a period of seven months between April and October after authorities signed an agreement with the energy company ENI and local transport companies. The fuel is 15 percent renewable and it will be produced in a Venetian bio-refinery where raw materials such as fat and oil from local households can be transformed into a biofuel. In late 2016, Venice added an electric water bus to its fleet as part of a move towards more eco-friendly public transport. Boats are responsible for a large proportion of air pollution in Venice, as such as the large cruise ships that will soon be banned from the historic center, said transport minister last July. Modern Technology to Help Discover Ancient Pompeii Treasures The director of the archaeological site of Pompeii announced that an entire quarter of the ancient city is set to be uncovered using drones, lasers and virtual reality taking place to the north of the city. This area has been unexplored since the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. and includes a buried alley with buildings along it including homes, shops and taverns.

HISTORY: FIRST, ONLY WOMAN SPOTLIGHT: TO RECEIVE MEDAL OF HONOR STAFF SGT. JOSEPH DIRKSZ From the Department of Defense

Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the only female recipient of the Medal of Honor, was born on November 26, 1832, in Oswego County, New York, and graduated from Syracuse Medical College in 1855. She married fellow medical student Albert Miller, but declined to take his name. The couple set up a medical practice in Rome, New York, but the public wasn’t ready to accept a woman physician. The practice and the marriage floundered. When the Civil War started, the Union Army wouldn’t hire women doctors, so Walker volunteered as a nurse in Washington’s Patent Office Hospital and treated wounded soldiers at the Battle of Bull Run in Virginia. In 1862, she received an Army contract appointing her as an assistant surgeon with the 52nd Ohio Infantry. As the first female doctor to serve with the Army Medical Corps, Walker treated the sick and wounded troops in Tennessee at Chickamauga and in Georgia during the Battle of Atlanta. Additionally, Dr. Walker advocated dress reform for women and frequently adapted men’s clothing for professional and personal comfort and utility. The Army nominated Walker for the Medal of Honor for her wartime service. President Andrew Johnson signed the citation on Nov. 11, 1865, and she received the award on Jan. 24, 1866. Her citation cites her wartime service, but not specifically valor in combat. Walker’s citation reads in part that she “devoted herself with much patriotic zeal to the sick and wounded soldiers, both in the field and hospitals, to the detriment of her own health. She has also endured hardships as a prisoner of war for four months in a Southern prison while acting as contract surgeon.” The War Department, starting in 1916, reviewed all previous Medal of Honor awards with the intent of undoing decades of abuse. At the time, for instance, the medal could be freely copied and sold and legally worn by anyone. Past awards would be rescinded and future ones would be rejected if supporting evidence didn’t convincingly show combat valor above and beyond the call of duty. Walker and nearly 1,000 past recipients found their medals revoked in the reform. Wearing the medal, if unearned, became a crime. The Army demanded Walker and the others return their medals. She refused and wore hers until her death at age 87 in 1919. In the late 1960s, Walker’s great niece, Ann Walker, launched an intensive lobbying cam-

paign to restore her aunt’s medal. A letter dated November. 25, 1974, from the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee read, in part, “It’s clear your great-grandaunt was not only courageous during the term she served as a contract doctor in the Union Army, but also as an outspoken proponent of feminine rights. Both as a doctor and feminist, she was much ahead of her time and, as is usual, she was not regarded kindly by many of her contemporaries. Today she appears prophetic.” President Jimmy Carter restored Mary Walker’s Medal of Honor on June 11, 1977. Today, her medal is on display in the Pentagon’s women’s corridor. Walker said her relative was controversial on the battlefield and in civilian life. During the war, she wore trousers under her skirt, a man’s uniform jacket and two pistols. As an early women’s rights advocate, particularly for dress reform, she was arrested many times after the war for wearing men’s clothes, including wing collar, bow tie and top hat. Curator of The Women in Military Service to America Memorial at Arlington (Virginia) National Cemetery Judy Bellafaire called Walker “quite a character,” and one whose ideas made her seem eccentric in her own day and age. “But judging her from today’s perspective, much of what she spoke and wrote about, that people made fun of at the time, is probably true today,” Bellafaire said.

With his trademark charismatic charm, Army Staff Sgt. Joseph Dirksz infuses energy into everything that he does. During his time as a registered USO Volunteer, Dirksz has harnessed his bombastic personality to enliven every program at which he’s volunteered – especially as a co-host at this year’s Naples Got Talent Show. For this reason, and for many more, the USO Naples family is pleased to recognize Dirksz as a USO Volunteer of the Month. Since becoming a registered USO Volunteer, Dirksz has donated more than 170 hours to USO programs that directly impact his fellow service members and families. “Joe brings an absolutely unmatched level of energy to everything he does,” USO Naples Center Manager Niki Leiva said. “Whether he is at the mic spinning trivia or filling the role as Santa Claus, Joe keeps us on our toes and laughing throughout the entire program.” The USO strives to keep service members connected to all that matters most: family, home, and country. It appears that the USO has also made quite the impact on Dirksz’ family. “The USO has made such a lasting impression on my 10-year-old son,” Dirksz said. “He’s looking forward to our next duty station so he can attend USO events stateside.” “It’s volunteers like Dirksz that help the USO meet its mission time and again,” Leiva added Join us for a USO Naples program and see firsthand how volunteers help the USO create memorable experiences for service members and military families. Naples Tiger Sharks Compete In London By Jason Markvart

The Naples Tiger Sharks competed at the London Aquatic Center (Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park) in Stratford, London, for the 2018 European Forces Swim League Championship February 24-25. Swimmers from 16 teams from around Europe gathered at the 50-meter pool to compete. Thirty-seven qualifiers from the Naples Tiger Sharks swim team not only competed against the best of EFSL, but they did so in the same pool were USA Olympic greats like Michael Phelps, and Katie Ledecky swam during the 2012 Summer Olympics. While not all of our qualified swimmers made the trip, the team still made a great showing taking home six golds, 12 silvers, and 10 bronze medals as well as other placement ribbons. In addition to medals and ribbons, Brooke Ralston (11) surged ahead to break the EFSL short course / long course records in 50-meter butterfly with a 33.32 second swim. Brooke would go on to have a very successful meet taking home three golds, two silvers, and two bronze medals. Gabriel Rayos (11) would also have an awesome meet taking home two gold, four silver, and two bronze. Both Brooke and Gabriel were also the team’s high point winners earning 140 points each, which certainly helped the Naples Tiger Sharks secure fifth place (overall) out of sixteen teams. Multiple Naples swimmers were also recognized during the EFSL Pentathlon awards. Which are awarded to the top six swimmers in each age division based on a combination of their time in pentathlon events. Tiger Sharks who placed were: Noah Pera 3rd place, Boys 8 and under; Gabriel

Rayos 1st place, Boys 11; Ryan Rayos 4th place, Boys 14 and 15; Christopher Kanak 4th place, Boys 18 and 19; Siena Ancona 2nd place, Girls 10; Brooke Ralston 2nd place, Girls 11; and Kathryn Kanak 6th place, Girls 15-16. The two day meet ended with the Coaches Relay, which consisted of the team’s coaches, and team captains competing in a 200 meter freestyle relay. While it was certainly an interesting sight, coaches from all the teams certainly put on a good show as they raced. This year Assistant Coaches Rob Jack, Nicole Schmeling, team captains Christopher Kanak, and Benjamin de Castro lead the relay to gold with impressive swims by all four; however the most memorable was Coach Rob, who swam the third leg of the relay, broke ahead of competition and put the win easily within the team’s grasp. The season has finally concluded for our Naples Tiger Sharks swimmers and families, for many it was a long season … A long season filled with amazing travels, friends, and awesome accomplishments. Our swimmers are ready for a break, as their season kicked off in August, and ran through February. It truly shows though in the level of dedication our swimmers have put forward. While the pool may belong to MWR, in theory, ask any Naples Tiger Sharks swimmer and they will tell you that it’s their home away from home. While most sports have ended, the training for our swimmers never ends. Spring training will roll right into Summer Swim, Swim Camp, and then back into the regular season. ENERGY CONSERVATION Cheapest Energy is Unused Energy From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Once again, we are promoting our Energy Slogan, “The cheapest energy is the energy you never use.” In order to practice the slogan we are listing 10 easy tips to have great savings. q Set your thermostat at 20 degrees Centigrade (68 degrees Fahrenheit) in the winter time and 25 degrees Centigrade (77 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer. This can save 15% on energy consumption. q When the TV, sound system, computers, and game consoles are not in use, turn them off rather than “standby.” Appliances on “standby” are now responsible for about 10% of an average household’s electricity consumption. q Use a power strip to conveniently turn off computers and electronic devices, which all use “standby” power when not in use. q Replace ordinary light bulbs with LED light bulbs. q Don’t leave the refrigerator door open for longer than necessary, and try to avoid placing warm food straight into the fridge – wait until it has cooled down. q Remember, turn lights off when leaving a room. It’s a myth that fluorescent tubes use more energy to switch them on than continued use. q Wait until you have a full load before using the washing machine. Adjust the water level on your washing machine to match the load size, especially when using hot water. Clean the lint filter in your dryer before every load to dry your clothes faster and save money. q Run your dishwasher only when it is fully loaded, on its lowest setting, and air dry dishes. You’ll knock about 35% off the energy use. q Turn off the faucet when you are brushing your teeth or doing the dishes and take shorter showers. (Especially the Teens in the home!) SOUND OFF: WHAT DOES ST. PATRICK’S DAY MEAN TO YOU?

William Henderson “St. Patrick’s day is special to me, because in the early 1980s the Navy announced promotions (on St. Patrick’s day), and I learned I had made full commander.”

IT1 Tyler Reese “For me, St. Patrick’s day is a time to reflect on my Celtic roots.”

PSC Angela Hutton “I’ll be on duty, which means I’ll already be wearing green, but I’ll be dreaming of green beer and festivities in NEPA (Northeastern Pennsylvania).”

YN2 Riese Sullivan “I’ll be in Dublin, which is where my grandfather emigrated from. I’m very excited to see where my family comes from and to eat some authentic corned beef.”

Michael Beasley “I believe that St. Patrick drove the snakes from Ireland.”

‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’ Author Heidi Murkoff Visits NSA Naples By Luisa Mazzella USO Naples Area Operations Manager

Heidi Murkoff, the best-selling author of the “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” book visited with local mothers and mothers-to-be March 10 at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples. Murkoff and her husband Erik received a warm welcome by both USNH Naples Commanding Officer Capt. Steven Blivin and USO Naples Area Director Sabrina Pullido, who introduced the couple to the La Cuncia Galley at the hospital filled with new and expecting mothers who were eager to meet the well-known author. Murkoff’s book, which is widely considered one of the most important books in the past 25 years, was originally published in 1984, and has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. She shared pregnancy tips and answered many questions, while cuddling with the newborn babies. Each visitor received a signed copy of

Murkoff’s “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” book along with personalized advice from Heidi Murkoff. Later in the afternoon, Murkoff and the USO team hosted a Special Reunion event, for the moms-to-be who attended last year’s event. The new mothers got to meet Murkoff once again and introduce their new babies to her. “This wonderful event, allows the USO to unite new and expecting mothers in our community,” Pullido said. “What started off as a baby shower among strangers, ended up more like a fun large family reunion.” Nearly 10,000 military spouses and expectant active-duty mothers have been served through this program since it was launched in 2013. After leaving Naples, Murkoff will continue her European tour of Italy and then Germany in the upcoming weeks. “This program truly provides a touch of home for moms to be who are far away from their families and friends,” Pullido added.

NSA WRESTLER From page 1

“The Navy seemed like a great stepping stone for success for me,” he said. Swanton’s right ear, which was permanently damaged from his high school wrestling years became a blessing in disguise for him after he joined the Navy. Swanton said everyone seemed to ask what happened to his ear. At MA “A” school at Naval Technical Training Center (NTTC) Lackland, Texas, he heard about the All-Navy Wrestling Team after someone who discovered he was a wrestler and learning that his damaged ear was a result of him being slammed into the mat. “I didn’t even know we had a wrestling team,” Swanton said. “One of our chiefs from “A” school looked into the All-Navy Wrestling Team and gave me some information about it.” At his first duty station in Mayport, Florida, Swanton routed his first request to join the All-Navy Wrestling Team. However, needs of the Navy, combined with an Individual Augmentee (IA) assignment to Romania delayed that request. After returning from that IA deployment, Swanton and his wife, Brianna, were transferred to NSA Naples. He said wrestling had always been in his thoughts, but with his pressing priorities of Navy training, deployments and the overseas transfer, his hopes of returning to the mat had to wait. “I didn’t want to leave Brianna in our first year together in a foreign country,” Swanton said. “So I let her get settled in, and then I applied for the wrestling team.” While waiting for the approval, Swanton decided to get back into competitive shape again. He became involved with the Liuzzi Wrestling Club in Melito, which is about 20 minutes from Support Site. The club trains five times a week, but with his rigorous work schedule Swanton said he could only train about three times a week. “It had been awhile since I competed, so I

started off by coaching,” Swanton said. “but coaching wrestling is very proactive. You have to get on the mat with the guys and show them moves and what to do and not do by wrestling with them.” Coach Michele Liuzzi (for whom the club is named after) observed that Swanton was not only a good coach, but also an exceptional wrestler who had returned to his competitive form. “The coach asked me if I wanted to compete again, because he said I looked like I was in decent shape,” Swanton said. “So I thought that since I had been wrestling all year, now was the time to try out for the team.” He made the team, and represented the AllNavy Wrestling team in February, winning Silver in the Freestyle Class – 57 kilos (125 pounds) and Bronze in the Greco-Roman Class – 60 kilos (130 pounds) weight classes at the Armed Forces Championships. He will once again represent the Navy at the U.S. Open Championships next month in Las Vegas, Nevada. His next immediate goal is to win a national championship. “I’m not going to focus on any sort of competition after that,” he said. “I’m going to stay focused on the tournament in six weeks.” Swanton said that the Navy has helped him to mature and has given him a different perspective on life. “I’m definitely not the same person I was six years ago,” he said. One of those life lessons he’s learned – and that he passes on to his wrestlers and fellow Sailors – is that you have to take advantage of opportunity when you can, and that applies to both work and personal life. We enjoy our time here. We might never be able to get the experience to explore like we are right now, so we spend a lot of our time traveling,” he added. “Sometimes people don’t think they can do something, but once you get going it’s a lot easier than you anticipated, than you were thinking in your head. Just jump in and do it. You’ll figure it out on the way.”

PEOPLE ARE KEY

He said the world is entering a “dynamic environment” with the return of great-power competition with Russia and China and the threats from Iran, North Korea and terrorism. The Army must be capable of countering terror threats as well as those posed by near-peer competitors, he said. The Army must be able to fight across the spectrum of warfare, and it must be fast, Esper said. He pointed to the stand-up of the Army Futures Command later this year as a defining moment for the service. “It will be the biggest reform in the Army since 1973 in terms of structure,” he said. “It promises to really reduce the time it takes to … field a new piece of equipment [and] to do it at less cost, and in time for the soldier to be able to use it.” Joint Force Evolution Wilson stressed that the services are continuing the evolution to a truly joint force. When she first joined the Air Force, she said, being joint meant having to serve in an assignment with people from other services, and joint operations meant deconflicting a battlespace. “I would say the services are on the cusp of becoming integrated – not just interdependent, not just joint – but integrated in our operations,” she said. “Because if we can do that – if we can gather information faster, decide faster and act faster,

then we are going to prevail in 21st-century conflict. I think we are on the cusp of being able to think and move in that direction.” “What distinguishes our military, what makes us the premier fighting force in the world -- which guarantees it will prevail in any conflict – is the quality of our service members,” Esper said. “They are – bar none – the best in the world. They’re smart, they’re aggressive, they’re resourceful, they are persistent and they have a lot of grit.” All of the secretaries said the services need some personnel reforms. Wilson noted that it takes 150 days to hire a civilian employee and said the backlog for security clearances has doubled over the past 18 months. The Air Force secretary said she wants organizational shifting to stop while

NATO-NORWAY EXERCISE

Page 1

The role of the OLRT involves a small group of troops to liaise with Norwegian authorities along with military and civilian counterparts as the environment surrounding the exercise scenario develops. Trident Juncture 18 is comprised of two parts: a live exercise conducted in and around Norway and a command post exercise conducted mostly in Naples. Some 35,000 troops from 30 NATO members and partners, along with 70 ships and about 130 aircraft, are estimated to deploy to central and northern Norway in October for the live portion of the exercise. JFC Naples and designated subordinate commands will seek certification as the NATO Response Force 2019 during the command post portion of the exercise in November. Trident Juncture 18 is the largest in a series of deliberately-planned exercises scheduled over several years to ensure that NATO forces are trained, able to operate together and ready to respond to a threat from any direction. Personnel at the headquarters of JFC Naples have started the crisis response planning phase for the upcoming exercise. For Norway, the exercise will test the country's ability to receive and handle the additional troops and equipment. According to Bruun-Hanssen, the exercise will also be an opportunity for the Norwegian Armed Forces to test Norway's Total De-

the service implements acquisition reform. “There is something we need to pause, which is organizational change,” she said. “There’s been a lot of it in the Pentagon, and we need to just let the org-chart boxes stay where they are this year and focus on things like personnel reform and fine-tuning acquisition.”

fence Concept, which involves military forces and a wide range of civilian departments and authorities. “If we are able to support NATO in reacting quickly, we will increase our ability to deter and to demonstrate that our Total Defence Concept works,” Bruun-Hanssen said. “In this regard, Trident Juncture is the finishing touch. If we do well and show that we got what it takes, it will strengthen the credibility of Norwegian defence and NATO cooperation.” Bruun-Hanssen added the NATO Alliance is an important guarantee for the security of Norway, and he noted the aim of the Alliance is to deter any adversary from using force against any member of the Alliance. “We hope that this exercise will demonstrate the solidarity and strength within NATO, and thus prevent that we will ever need this help in real life,” BruunHanssen said. Foggo spoke to a group at the Oslo-based Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies. “I think it’s very important for NATO to show that it is ready to defend and deter in any geographic part of the Alliance, whether it be in North America or over here in Europe,” Foggo, a self-described transatlantic junkie, said. “We are not an offensive Alliance, we don’t go looking for a fight, but we will defend our territory and we will deter any adversary who takes action against us. So, we’re going to prove that here in October when we do Trident Juncture 18.”

Naples Middle High School JROTC Schedule

Naples Middle High School JROTC Cadets take turns learning how to conduct firefighting operations on board USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) during a transit between Gaeta and Naples February 26, 2018. Photo courtesy of NJROTC Cadet Staff From the Naples NJROTC Cadet Staff

The Naples Middle High School JROTC Cadets have been busy the last few weeks. Some of the highlights include: February 21 the Cadets hosted Capt. Francisco Veray (U.S. Naval Hospital Dental Clinic) who conducted the JROTC annual inspection. The Cadets briefed all their programs including operations, supply and ADMIN.

The visit also included a zone inspection, a personnel inspection, and culminated with a pass-in-review and a military drill demonstration. February 26 the Cadets went underway onboard the USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20). The Naples JROTC Unit made the transit between Gaeta and Naples and enjoyed briefings and demonstrations by ship’s company. March 7 the Cadets held a small parade to celebrate

Women’s History Month; the relatively short notice event was sandwiched between rain squalls after the weather forced the unit to reschedule several times. The middle school students led by the National Junior Honor Society played a key role by carrying the U.S. State flags. March 9 the Cadets held their annual military ball; a phenomenal event which is considered by many to be the best ball of the year. March 13 the Naples Cadets hosted Willard High School JROTC. They were visiting Naples from Missouri during their Spring Break. The two teams showed off their drill teams, and competed in physical fitness events (cadence push-ups, situps and relay races). The late afternoon ended with a Neapolitan Pizza party provided by the JROTC Boosters. The Naples JROTC Cadets have been busy and are looking forward to slowing down during the next few weeks as the chain of command gets ready to turn the reins over to the junior class. Our next major events will be the end of year awards ceremony/change of command and the annual picnic at Carney Park.

Origins of St. Patrick’s Day By Gary Nichols NSA Public Affairs

St. Patrick’s Day has become a popular holiday – which is celebrated on March 17 each year – to honor the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick, who is credited with bringing Christianity to the Irish people. Irish immigrants began observing the holiday in Boston in 1737, and the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in New York City in 1766. Here’s some background on the person who is celebrated on this holiday. The real St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish. He was born in Britain around 390 A.D. to a rich Christian family who owned property and slaves. As a young boy, it is believed Patrick showed no interest in Christianity. When he was 16, he was kidnapped and sent overseas to the wild, chilly and pagan country of Ireland to tend sheep for seven years. This was a very tough period of his life, and during this time he became a true believer in the Christian faith. According to legend, voices in his dreams told Patrick to escape from Ireland. He found passage on a pirate ship back to Britain, where he was eventually reunited with his family. While in Britain he became ordained as

a priest. He then returned to Ireland, and then spent the rest of his life converting Irish pagans to Christianity. He died on March 17, 461, and was almost forgotten. Eventually as Christianity spread around Ireland, his legend grew, and centuries later he was honored by the people of Ireland as its patron saint. Today, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated around the world. Some other interesting things about St. Patrick’s Day: It is widely believed St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland. However, there have never been snakes in Ireland, then or now, for two reasons: Ireland is an island, and most snakes can’t swim; Plus, the environment was too cold for snakes to live. Most scholars believe “snakes” is symbolic of the pagans, which Patrick “drove out” by converting them to Christianity. Most people, whether they are Irish or not, wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. One of the traditions is to pinch anyone who is not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day. Corned beef and cabbage are traditional foods eaten on St. Patrick’s Day. The shamrock is often worn as a badge or pin. The three leaves, as taught by St. Patrick, also represented the Christian Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
