Whether based in the United States or abroad, Sailors held celebrations to mark the Navy’s 243rd birthday with other service members, civilians, guests and community members while top leaders have sent messages to the fleet reflecting on the theme “Forged by the Sea.” Sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS New York (LPD 21) celebrated the Navy’s birthday while en route to support the largest NATO exercise in more than 20 years. “The New York and all of our Marine teammates have had an incredibly successful year, deployed forward – twice – to support and defend freedom around the globe while furthering our nation's goals,” Capt. Brent DeVore, New York’s commanding officer, said. “Our strength at sea, cemented in our bonds of teamwork and common purpose, permits us to operate at this high of a level. To celebrate this Navy birthday at sea, on our way to Trident Juncture to work with our allied and partner navies, is appropriate to the kind of year we have had and our Navy's ability to respond to regional crises.”

NATO Military Leaders Highlight Broad, Significant Exercise in Norway From JFC Naples Public Affairs

Senior NATO military leaders met at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, October 8-9 to coordinate and communicate details on the largest NATO exercise in recent years. A live portion of the exercise will begin October 25 and end November 7 in and around Norway. All 29-member NATO member nations will participate, along with partner nations Sweden and Finland.

“We are boiling down Trident Juncture to a core theme of just a few words,” Adm. James Foggo, commander of Trident Juncture and Joint Force Command (JFC) Naples, said. “I call it the three ‘Ds’: NATO is a ‘defensive’ alliance, Trident Juncture ‘demonstrates’ our credible capability, and together we ‘deter’ potential adversaries.” “The exercise will give us the opportunity to test, evaluate, further de-

velop our Total Defence Concept, as well as national reception plans,” Lieutenant General Rune Jakobsen, Norway’s Joint Force Headquarters commander, said. “During the exercise, the regional forces will cooperate closely with civil emergency services, the police, the railway, port and transportation authorities, as well as with local and national businesses. CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Todd Abrahamson NSA Naples Commanding Officer

The Navy Birthday Ball tonight promises to be a spectacular event and I am very proud that NSA Naples gets to host such an important celebration of our Navy’s heritage. Thank you to everyone who has done the hard work planning, selling tickets, and marketing to the community. Your efforts have made it possible for us to get together tonight and celebrate our naval traditions with camaraderie and fun. This year’s theme, “Forged by the Sea,” has been decided on by the Navy to emphasize how each and every one of us has been molded by our service and the parts we play in maintaining U.S. sea power and maritime dominance. Whether you’re standing watch at the gate, working the mailroom, keeping the lights on around base, or pulling a shift at the hospital, you are part of supporting the fleet and keeping that lineage of our country’s impressive naval service alive. Thank you for serving our Navy, and I look forward to seeing everyone tonight for some well-earned celebration! This week was also the kick off for the Naples area Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Every year we take part in the federal government’s campaign to support a good cause and make an impact outside the workplace. The CFC gives us the option to pick from a wide array of charities to donate to. While not mandatory, this is a great way to maintain a positive influence in the world beyond our day to day duties as service members and civilian DoD employees. Charities include aid for the poor, sick, veterans, and others in need. The campaign will run from now until December 14th and your command CFC representatives are standing by to help you learn more. Please take a moment to contact them or visit cfcoverseas.org for more information. A new policy change coming to the community worth mentioning is how we will all be able to obtain or update our tourist passports after November 1st. For about six years, U.S. Naval Hospital Naples has been temporarily helping to support the U.S. Consulate General Naples to perform this function for the military community. Next month, the consulate will be permanently taking back full execution of this State Department mission. What does that mean for us and our families? Quite simply, individuals in need of a tourist passport will need to contact the consulate to begin the process rather than the hospital. For more information, contact the U.S. Consulate General Naples at uscitizensnaples@state.gov or 081-583-8111. As always, thanks for reading the Panorama! For more information about NSA Naples, please follow us on Twitter @NSA_Naples and Facebook at facebook.com/NSANaples/ Buon fine settimana – and remain vigilant.

ITALIAN NEWS BRIEFS COMPILED BY TERESA MEROLA NSA NAPLES PUBLIC AFFAIRS

New Pompeii Excavation May Change Current Accepted Date of Vesuvius Eruption During new excavation in the ancient city of Pompeii, archaeologists uncovered a charcoal inscription reading “XVI K Nov,” which means “the 16th day before November” or more precisely, in the month of October. Historians have traditionally thought the eruption occurred in late August 23 in 79 A.D., but the new findings indicate the date of the eruption was two months later. The inscription was found in a home and this is the latest in a series of important finds made during recent excavations. Culture Minister Bonisoli said this discovery is important for science, history and art, and for showing off Italian expertise. Rome Mayor Considering Eliminating Bus Traffic in Historic City Center Tour busses in Rome would be eliminated from circulating in the historic city center starting in January 2019, said Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi. Following a ruling by the Lazio regional administrative court (TAR), the mayor underlined that there would be safer streets and a more livable city, without tour busses. Naples Now Most Sought After City by Filmmakers The Campania Region has become a spotlight as a destination for filmmakers in alternative to the glamour of Rome. Film directors are going to the region, along with its southern coast to capture a rarely seen side of the region. Here are

some example of the films and TV series shot in the Region of Naples: Gomorrah film and TV show, the Vice of Hope that is set in the Castel Volturno and Dogman, a fable about a good man turned criminal is Italy’s foreign-language Oscar submission; My Brilliant Friend is based on the best-selling Neapolitan novels by Elena Ferrante, shows the desolation and desperation of the city in the years following World War II. Many more TV series have been broadcasting on Italian TV, showing beautiful side of the city of Naples and its surroundings. Francesca Comencini, a film director said that the north of Italy can shine and show its luminous face, with its modernity and economic success, but it would not exist without the dark chamber of extreme genius down there in Naples. Parma Most Eco-Mobile Italian City A report from the 12th Sustainable Mobility in Italy from Euromobility said that the city of Parma is the most “eco-mobile” (environmentally user-friendly transportation) of Italian cities followed by Milan and Venice. Brescia is fourth, followed by Padua, Turin, Bologna, Verona and Modena. Cagliari, Sardinia, is the only southern city in the top 10. Naples Opens Center for Stray Dogs The city of Naples opened the first municipal center for Neapolitan stray dogs. The stray dog house was inaugurated on October 1 by Naples Mayor Luigi De Magistris. The structure welcomed more than 100 dogs, and it aims to find a home for each animals through many initiatives including pet therapy and workshops for children. In short, the structure is open to all citizens who are willing to adopt stray dogs.

Pasquale Merola, a financial analyst for CNREURAFSWA N8 was recently presented a command coin by Capt. Maria L. Aguayo, the Commanding Officer of Naval Facilities Engineering Command, (NAVFAC), Europe Africa Southwest Asia, in recognition of his service and support provided during the close out of FY-2018. Merola provided outstanding financial management support to the CNREURAFSWA N4 Regional Program Directors. His tireless efforts and attention to detail in supporting the demanding Facility Support programs resulted in full funds execution during year end closeout. His customers recognized Merola’s exemplary customer service, his willingness to do whatever was necessary in terms of support and always accompanied by a positive attitude. Merola has been working in the Budget division for the past 22 years and from the very beginning he has been assigned to work with the Facility Support programs. His program knowledge has grown over the years and he can always be relied upon to do anything asked of him without fail. When he is not working, Merola, like many Neapolitans, loves sports and would never miss a soccer game. His favorite team is Napoli and he enjoys watching the game with his son and friends. Also, each summer he said he cannot stay away from the beach. And, while his family enjoys the sun he tries very hard to catch fish for their dinner. In 1992 he lived for more than six months in New York and in Denver, Colorado. In addition to having enjoyed the great quality of life in the United States and the natural beauties that those cities had to offer, he treasures other wonderful life sensations that only those places were able to pass on to him, including meeting new people and learning a new language. That new skill formed the basis for his new start once he back home to Bella Napoli. His greatest personal accomplishment, which makes him feel very proud, is that of having purchased a house for his family. “I thank God every day,” Merola said. “He has given me the opportunity to work with, and get to know, some really great people.”

USNH Naples No Longer Providing Tourist Passports, Social Security Registrations Services as of Nov. 1 From U.S Naval Hospital Naples

U.S. Naval Hospital Naples will no longer process tourist passport applications as of November 1, 2018. Also, U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples will no longer process social security registrations for newborns. Individuals who need a tourist passport must contact the U.S. Consulate General Naples. These services are handled on an appointment basis; appointments must be made online. New parents will need to apply for newborn social security cards via the Social Security Ad-

ministration. This change is occurring because tourist passports are a function of the State Department and Social Security registration is a function of the Social Security Administration. These services were a temporary function of the hospital and in order to maintain mission alignment, these processes will be handled by their respective agencies. USNH Naples will continue to process Birth Registration applications, which must be processed within 10 days of the birth. For more information, visit https://it.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizenservices/.

Potable Water Distribution Flushing at Support Site From NSA Public Affairs

for a period of time. Flushing cleans out sediment that has accumulated over time. Flushing may result in some temporary discoloration or sediment in your water. These conditions are not harmful, and should only remain for a short duration. If this occurs, keep your water faucets open until water clarity returns to normal. As a precautionary measure, please check your water for discoloration or sediment before doing any laundry to avoid staining fabrics. ENERGY CONSERVATION Support Site LED Project and Naval Shore Bases Installing LED Lights From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Have you ever wondered how our Installation Energy Management Team is reducing our energy consumption? Our team is honored to share that we completed an LED project at Support Site which included 467 High Pressure sodium lamps 250W and 150W with new 98W, 58W, and 54W LED Fixtures. The project will reduce our annual consumption by 657,000 kWh and $120,600 in savings. Over the last three years, Navy Installations Command has been looking to pocket a few million bucks by upgrading current light bulbs to LED. Areas such as gyms, street lights, and parking garages in all of the 70 installations worldwide. LED’s are brighter, safer and cost less per use. In the fleet, ships who transitioned to LED’s have saved 3 percent or $150 million of their annual energy costs. This effective light bulb lasts up to 50,000 hours, whereas a compact fluorescent light bulb yields 7,500 hours. The data shows without a doubt how efficient LED’s are. It is also safer to handle and to dispose of since fluorescent bulbs contain mercury. One key benefit of LED’s are their brightness. According to the National Eye Institute, their brightness can decrease eye strain and they are mercury free making them safer and durable. Reducing our energy has been a key policy goal for former Navy Secretary Ray Mabus. He led his Great Green Fleet initiative since 2009 with some bumps on the road but the light bulbs have been a major success. CNIC’s overall strategy of reducing energy ashore comes down to building new habits of turning off lights when you leave a room for prolong period of time and powering down computer monitors at the end of the work day. Do not forget to use natural lighting when possible. For more tips on Energy Conservation call Gennaro Gargiulo or Steelworker 2nd Class Axel Gomez at DSN 626-1895 or Comm. 081-568-1865.

HN Jessica Bryant “I really like John Coltrane’s style of Jazz. It’s very cool, soothing and peaceful.”

D.J. Tressler “I really enjoy listening to the alternative rock band ‘Cake.’ It reminds me of my time growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, in the 1990s.”

Richard Fabacher “Nowadays the music is more like rap. I don’t really like that style. What I really like are parodies, like ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic and D.J. Marshmellow.”

Alicia Gustafson “I really like ‘Coldplay’ because it reminds me of the time when my children were little, and getting away with my husband for date night, and feeling youthful and free.”

YN2 Riese Sullivan “The band ‘Rush’ is something me and my dad listened to as I was growing up, and I always enjoy the story in their lyrics.”

VP-10 Participates in Exercise Mavi Balina 2018 By Lt. John Ojard Patrol Squadron 10

A P-8A Poseidon assigned to Patrol Squadron (VP) 10 participated in the Turkish-led maritime exercise Mavi Balina 2018, Sept. 28–Oct. 7, in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The exercise was designed to improve combined combat capability, increase operational capacity, and strengthen relationships among exercise participants in the area of anti-submarine warfare. Participating nations include Pakistan, Romania, Turkey, and the United States. NATO Maritime Group 2 also participated. The “Red Lancers” of VP10 detached one aircrew and a maintenance team to Dalaman, Turkey, from Sept. 27-Oct.3. VP-10 attended pre-sail meetings at Aksaz Naval Base where they were able to coordinate with surface officers from the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Turkey as well as aircrew from Turkey and Pakistan.

A Turkish navy Type-209 crew provided the Red Lancers a tour of their submarine following the pre-sail. The Red Lancers welcomed Turkish navy riders on two P-8A exercise flights originating from Dalaman. Pakistani, Turkish, and U.S. maritime patrol aircrews continued to foster goodwill and expand interoperability through professional and social interactions at Dalaman. In-depth mission planning provided the opportunity for the crews to develop the foundation for coordinated anti-submarine warfare. "We're glad to be a part of this important exercise and work side-by-side with our allies and partners to enhance our interoperability. This type of operation builds capability with our allies," noted Lt. Jordan Spivey, patrol plane commander for VP-10. The Red Lancers of VP10, is based out of Jacksonville, Florida, and is conducting operations from Naval Air Station

USS Ross Hosts Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu By Ens. Drake Davis

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) held a reception to honor the U.S. Navy’s 243rd birthday October 11, 2018. The reception also served as a celebration of the U.S.-Israel alliance and a demonstration of both nations’ commitment to ensuring the continued strength of the relationship. USS Ross welcomed many distinguished military and civilian guests aboard, including the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Cmdr. David Coles, commanding officer of Ross, led Netanyahu and Friedman on a tour of the ship. As they walked the ship, Cmdr. Coles explained its multimission capabilities and presented Ross’ navigational equipment in the pilot house. After the tour, the official party took the opportunity to view the harbor before arriving on the flight deck to address the guests.

The reception is an illustration of the U.S. Navy’s continued commitment to ensuring security in the Middle East and strengthening the relationship with Israel as a strategic partner. The official party spoke of the strong U.S-Israel military alliance and the two nations’ resolve in the defense of freedom worldwide. “The close relationship between our nations extends much further than military to military,” Coles said during a speech reflecting on his travels throughout Israel, “Born of shared values and vision, it is personal.” Ross, forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, is currently conducting a routine patrol to support U.S. national security interests in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations. U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and inter-agency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.

Senior NATO military leaders from across Europe met at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, October 8-9 to coordinate and communicate details on the largest NATO exercise in recent years. The exercise, which will take place in and around Norway, will begin October 25 and end November 7. Photo by French Navy Maître Sebestien Laurent

NATO EXERCISE IN NORWAY Page 1

The size and complexity of the exercise ensure a very realistic stress test for everybody.” A significant portion of the exercise will test NATO’s ability to move forces in and out of Norway. “When we talk about over 10 thousand vehicles on Norway’s roads, that will NAVY’S BIRTHDAY

present a traffic control challenge that will stress-test the system,” Lieutenant General Christian Juneau, who will control the exercise for NATO in Stavanger, Norway, said. “The second point I want to make is the weather in Norway, in late October-early November, will be a factor, for sure. As a Canadian I know what it can look like in a northern country during that time of the year.

Page 1

In keeping with a time-honored Navy tradition, the birthday celebration began with a cake cutting ceremony. The first slice of cake was cut by the youngest Sailor, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Airman Apprentice Jared Carter and the oldest Sailor, Navy Chaplin Merlin Stephan, signifying the pass down of information from one generation to the next. “I feel very honored to be able to be a part of the New York’s celebration of the Navy’s birthday,” Carter said. “Given the naval history and all the Sailors who have come before me and all the Sailors who come after me, it is a big honor to just be a small part of a much larger picture.” Early this year, New York deployed for six months in support of maritime security operations and national security interests in Africa and Europe. After a brief maintenance period, New York left its homeport en route to Newport, Rhode Island, for the 23rd Annual International Seapower Symposium, helping to foster and strengthen global relationships between the U.S. and over 100 countries around the world. New York most recently departed in support of Trident Juncture, a NATO led exercise taking place in portions of Norway, Sweden and Finland during October and November. In Manama, Bahrain, more than 500 service members and guests celebrated American naval history during the Navy Birthday Ball at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Vice Adm. Scott Stearney, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, U.S. 5th Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces, served as the guest speaker as well as the guest of honor for the ceremony. “For 243 years, and multiple generations of Sailors, the sea has forged our nation,” Stearney said. “It has forged our Navy and continues to forge our Sailors and our eternal destiny. Our nation recognized that our prosperity was linked to a strong and capable maritime force.” U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations encompasses about 2.5 million square miles of water area and includes the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy. An Oct. 13, 1775 resolution of the Continental Congress established what the United States Navy is now. In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Elmo Zumwalt authorized recognition of Oct. 13

They have already had some snow in Norway, so that will certainly be stressing the movement control in our logistics, as well.” A command post portion of Trident Juncture will run November 14-24 in Naples, with a smaller element in Stavanger, Norway. It will train and test JFC Naples in order to certify it to command and control the NATO Response Force in 2019.

as the Navy’s birthday. Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer said in a message to the fleet that the Navy is ready to fight, respond and defend wherever there is need but it needs to do it with a sense of urgency and efficiency. “Because of your hard work and dedication, the foundation for restoring readiness and increasing lethality has been set. But as we enter our 244th year of service, we must now build on that foundation. I need you to continually think of how to improve the delivery of the Navy the nation needs with a committed sense of urgency,” Spencer said. Other top Navy leaders, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John M. Richardson and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Russell Smith, said happy birthday to the Navy in a video posted on social media. Smith said that America has been kept safe through exceptional talent, dedication to duty and strength of character. “John Paul Jones once said ‘men mean more than guns in the rating of a ship.’ That’s what this is about – our people,” Smith said in reference to the first well-known naval commander in the American Revolutionary War. He also said that with all the creativity and innovation, the Navy will meet any challenges “head on” and is prepared “for whatever comes next.” Recalling landmark battles such as the War of 1812 and the Battle of Midway, Richardson said, “Throughout our history, our Sailors have always risen to the occasion and punched above their weight when the nation called.” Richardson closed his remarks with a quote from Jones: “He who cannot risk, will not win.’ This is the year that we win. Wherever you are around the world – on a ship, in a squadron, take some time to think about what this year means as we go and we win it. We earn it every single day, every single watch.” Over the past two and a half centuries, the Navy has grown to become the largest, most advanced and most lethal fighting force the world has ever known. The Navy today has more than 328,000 personnel on active duty and around 100,000 personnel in the Navy Reserve, as well as, 286 deployable battle force ships and approximately 270,000 civilian employees. Library of Congress and the National Jukebox From the Library of Congress

When most people think of the Library of Congress, they picture books and historic documents, but it’s much more than that, it’s also become a great place to listen to music – all kinds – especially music from the earliest days of recorded music. The Library of Congress is the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution, and serves as the official research arm of Congress and the de facto national library of the United States. It is also the largest library in the world, with more than 162 million items. The collections include books, sound recordings, motion pictures, photographs, maps, and manuscripts. The Library of Congress is housed in three buildings on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.; and it also maintains the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, Virginia. The National Jukebox makes historical sound recordings available to the public free of charge. The huge range of music includes

popular, opera, classical, medieval, musicals, ragtime, jazz, blues, folk, country and many other types of music. The Jukebox includes thousands of recordings from the extraordinary collections of the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation and other contributing libraries and archives. Recordings in the Jukebox were issued on record labels now owned by Sony Music Entertainment, which has granted the Library of Congress a gratis license to stream acoustical recordings. On May 10, 2011, Harry Connick Jr., a Grammy award winning musician and actor, helped launch the grand opening of the National Jukebox. Connick said the new branch of the Library of Congress was important for future generations to have access to some of the country’s earliest music recordings. And, just like how the Library of Congress regularly adds books and documents to its collection, the Jukebox will also be regularly adding recordings to its music library.
