CNO and MCPON Visit Naples Region Sailors By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Ryan Riley

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), Adm. John Richardson, and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Russell Smith visited U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet headquarters at Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy, November 20, 2018. During the visit, CNO and MCPON met with senior leadership before holding an all-hands call for the Naples region Sailors and Navy civilians. “This theater has become sort of the case study,” Richardson said. “The leading thinkers, the actors in terms of what our Navy is doing. Some of the most exciting stuff that we are doing.” CNO went on and praised the Sailors for their implementation and execution of new defense strategies such as Defense Secretary James Mattis’ Dynamic Force Employment with the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group in U.S. 6th Fleet.

NSA Naples Military Work Dogs, Handlers Conduct Exercise at Carney Park Naval Support Activity Naples Security Military Working Dog (MWD) Division conducted a joint training exercise along with members from the U.S. Army Veterinary Clinic onboard Support Site at Carney Park on November 16. The participants hiked five miles of rugged terrain along the caldera of the extinct volcano, Monte Gauro, with full rucksacks. At various stages along the trek they stopped to conduct several mission-oriented training drills throughout the exercise. At one of the stations Army Veterinarian Capt. Kate Fodor (back) along with Veterinary Technician Rikki Inman (left) provided simulated emergency veterinary care for Military Working Dog Toto (a three year old German Shepherd) while his handler Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Austin Klinkhammer held and calmed his partner during the exercise. The veterinarians also took vital signs, “diagnosed” and “treated” heat casualties, administered intravenous fluids, set splints and “provided” combat first aid for open chest and abdominal wounds. The dogs and their handlers also conducted explosive detection training, including locating buried explosives and identifying, tracking and apprehending suspects. Europe’s Top Navy Leader Commemorates Armistice Day, Honors Veterans at Flanders Field By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Ryan Riley

Adm. James G. Foggo III, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa and Allied Joint Force Command Naples, Italy, commemorated Armistice Day during a commemoration held at Flanders Field American Cemetery and Memorial in Waregem, Belgium, November 11, 2018. This year is the 100th anniversary of the armistice signed by allies of World War I and Germany for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front. The armistice took effect at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. “We find ourselves today on a hallowed battlefield of the Ypres-Lys offensive,” Foggo said. “The majority of the 368 headstones are for men who died during the last days of the war. The secluded recesses of the cemetery represent the four American divisions who fought in Belgium. More than 81,000 U.S. service members died in Europe, including 1,043 on Belgian soil.” The armistice expired after 36 days and the following year a formal peace agreement, the Treaty of Versailles, was signed. CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Todd Abrahamson NSA Naples Commanding Officer

appy ThanksH giving! By now everyone has hopefully consumed a ton of turkey and stuffing, and is getting some well-deserved rest. I want to specifically thank the volunteers who made the numerous Thanksgiving meals around base possible this month. Members of the USO, MWR, Chapel, and Naval Hospital teams put on some fantastic events for single and unaccompanied Sailors here and I want them to know how important that kind of contribution is to our military community. As we continue to celebrate this weekend, please remember to keep safety on your mind. Whether you’re outside playing football or inside heating up leftovers in the oven, the holidays can include a lot of situations where we need to apply safety considerations at home too. If you’re traveling, this is amplified even further; especially when driving home loaded up with tryptophan! Speaking of safety, this year’s winter safety standdown has started here in Naples. Our NSA Naples safety department will be providing required annual safety training for all tenant commands on Capodichino and Support Site. This is an incredibly important topic, not just during the holiday period, but in everything we do as military and civilian personnel. Thanks to this community’s commitment to safety last year, our installation earned the 2017 CNO’s Shore Safety Award. I can’t stress enough that this achievement was not made by NSA personnel alone. This was the result of all commands and their personnel putting a priority on safety. Please help our installation keep that going by making sure you get to your command’s allotted safety training time slot. If you can’t make it to your command’s session, you are more than welcome to join in during one of the NSA designated slots. A full schedule has been disseminated to command training officers, and has been posted in the PAO notes. Next week we roll from one holiday season to the next with the base’s annual Holiday Village and Tree Lighting ceremony on Support Site. On Friday, November 30th, MWR will be hosting an assortment of different holiday events at the Village Forum courtyard for all ages. They’ll be putting up a holiday market, amusement rides, food and beverage booths, and the Naples Elementary School PTA will be offering photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus. You’ll also be able to take part in MWR’s Ugly Sweater 3K race and enjoy musical performances by Naples Middle High School and Elementary School musicians, and American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips. Please consider coming out and joining the community in celebration and if you have any questions, MWR can be reached at 081-811-4459. As always, thanks for reading the Panorama! For more information about NSA Naples, please follow us on Twitter @NSA_Naples and Facebook at facebook.com/NSANaples/ Buon fine settimana – and remain vigilant.

ITALIAN NEWS BRIEFS COMPILED BY TERESA MEROLA NSA NAPLES PUBLIC AFFAIRS

New Fresco Discovered at Pompeii An exceptional fresco was discovered last Friday in the archaeological site of Pompeii. The fresco has still its remarkably vivid colors, and depicts a sensual scene from the Greek myth of “Leda and the Swan.” The fresco portrays the Greek god Zeus (also known as Jupiter in Roman mythology), taking the form of a swan sitting in the lap of Spartan queen Leda. According to the Pompeii archaeological park, the fresco was discovered in the bedroom of a house during work to stabilize the excavation site. The bedroom is located near a corridor by the entrance of an upscale domus, or home, where another splendid fresco was discovered earlier this year, explained a spokesman from the archaeological park. Archaeologists are going to remove the fresco to a place where it can be protected and shown to the public. Waterspout Over Salerno The city of Salerno was captivated by a waterspout formed on Tuesday afternoon near the commercial port of the city. A waterspout is similar to a tornado but small and weak that it forms over water when cool unstable air passes over warmer waters, producing vigorous up draughts that can turn into a spinning column of water. Local people shared photos and videos of the waterspouts. Some containers were damaged but no injuries were reported.

Royal Palace of Caserta Damaged from Storm The Royal Palace of Caserta was hit by hail and lightning on Tuesday that knocked off a portion of leaf decoration on one of the capitals on the southwest façade. This part of the Palace was restored in works that ended in 2016. Also, the bad weather conditions brought many flooding in the city, as well in the city of Naples, where many schools were closed. The Palace in Caserta is one of the top tourist attractions in southern Italy, also famous for hosting the G7 in 1994 and several films including Star Wars. Mobster Luxury Villas Confiscated by Italian Police Eight luxury villas were confiscated in Rome by some 600 Italian police and the presence of the City mayor Virginia Raggi, who watched the operation carried out against the Mafia clan Casamonica. Raggi said the properties would be demolished by the end of the year. The villas were illegally built in areas of archaeological interest by the Mafia clan Casamonica and some houses had even incorporated whole features of the historic 16th century city waterway. The Casamonica family has been associated with crime in the southeastern quarters of Rome for several decades, including a high profile funeral which sparked a fierce backlash with politicians demanding a comprehensive legal assault on the clan.

HISTORY: USS ENTERPRISE COMMISSIONED

USS Enterprise (CVN 65). U.S. Navy photo From U.S. Navy

The Navy’s eighth ship to bear the name Enterprise became the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier when she was commissioned November 25, 1961, at Newport News, Virginia. In 1954, Congress authorized the construction of the world’s first nuclearpowered aircraft carrier, the eighth U.S. ship to bear the name Enterprise. USS Enterprise (CVN 65), the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, commemorates a name that has been a continuing symbol of the great struggle to retain American liberty, justice and freedom since the first days of the American Revolutionary War. It is the eighth ship of the fleet to carry this illustrious name that is literally defined as boldness, energy and invention in practical affairs. The giant ship was powered by eight nuclear reactors, two for each of its four propeller shafts. This was a daring undertaking; never before had two nuclear reactors ever been harnessed together. As such, when the engineers first started planning the ship’s propulsion system, they were uncertain how it would work, or even if it would work according to their theories. Materials used by the shipyard included 60,923 tons of steel; 1507 tons of aluminum; 230 miles of pipe and tubing; and 1700 tons of one-quarterinch welding rods. The materials were supplied from more than 800 compa-

nies. Nine hundred shipyard engineers and designers created the ship on paper, and the millions of blueprints they created, laid end-to-end, would stretch 2,400 miles, equivalent to the distance from Miami to Los Angeles. After years of planning and work by thousands the day finally arrived. At her commissioning, then-Secretary of the Navy John B. Connally Jr. called it a worthy successor to the highly decorated seventh USS Enterprise of World War II. “The fighting Gray Lady, as it was called, served in such well-known battles as the raid on Tokyo and the Battle of Midway,” Connally said. “The new Enterprise will reign a long, long time as queen of the seas.” His words would ring true. More than 100,000 Sailors and Marines served aboard Enterprise during her 51 years of service, and she has been home ported in both Alameda, California, and Norfolk, Virginia. Enterprise set many records and milestones: She was the longest warship ever put to sea, and during sea trials, she exceeded 40 knots. Later, she became the first nuclear carrier to transit the Suez Canal and the first carrier to operate the new F-14 Tomcats. A veteran of 25 deployments to the Mediterranean Sea, Pacific Ocean, and the Middle East, Enterprise has served in nearly every major conflict to take place during her history. From the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 to six deployments in support of the Vietnam conflict through the Cold War and the Gulf Wars, Enterprise was there. On September 11, 2001, Enterprise aborted her transit home from a long deployment after the terrorist attacks, and steamed overnight to the North Arabian Sea. Big 'E' once again took her place in history when she launched the first strikes in direct support of Operation Enduring Freedm. After 25 deployments around the world and 51 years of active service, Enterprise was officially deactivated December 1, 2012, at Naval Base Norfolk, Virginia.

SPOTLIGHT: CARRON KRAS Carron Kras has been a nurse for 15 years working across almost every modality. When she and her active duty husband arrived to Italy with their children in 2016, she was thrilled to return to the duty sation they had been at nine years prior. “Naples holds a special place in my family; our daughter went here for elementary school during our first tour and graduated from high school here last spring,” Kras said. “When we Wylie Miller, president of the Retiree Associawere here from 2004 to 2007, I tion of Southern Italy, presented Carron Kras volunteered with the American with a plague in recognition of her service to Red Cross as a nurse on the the retiree community. Photo courtesy of multi-service ward. When a USNH Naples Public Affairs nursing position opened at the hospital this tour, I knew I had to apply and give back to the community that has offered us so much. I work amongst some of the best providers, nurses, Corpsmen, and local national staff; they are committed to quality patient care.” In addition to delivering care to active duty service members and their families, Kras made a point to give retirees the healthcare they deserve as well. It was her service and commitment to the retiree community that made Wylie Miller, the president of the U.S. Military Retiree Association of Southern Italy, pay particular attention. “When I first met nurse Kras, I sat down with her and I said, ‘You know, dealing with the retiree community is different than any other community,” Miller said. “It’s hard for a retiree to fit in a box that’s out there with the active duty, and her response was ‘Well don’t worry about it, we can re-draw the box.’” Kras and her family will soon depart Naples, much to the dismay of the retiree community. On November 15, Miller, along with other members of the Retiree Association, presented Kras with a token of their appreciation for her empathetic delivery of healthcare. Kras gives each retiree a personal healthcare experience from start to finish, even giving up her office space at times for retirees to discuss difficult end-of-life decisions. “Every once in a while, I get a call from a retiree who asks, ‘Who in the heck is that nurse up there? She is something else!’ Well when you get these personal experiences and you get multiple calls like this, you realize this is a special person,” Miller said. The unconditional care that Kras provided to the Naples retiree community has made a lasting impact that will not soon be forgotten. As Miller presented Kras with a plaque from the Retiree Association, he made note of the gold key affixed to its surface, “The golden key represents how nurse Kras found the golden key to take care of our people. The appreciation goes both ways; “It has been an honor to work so closely with the retiree population as a way to say thank you for their commitment and sacrifice to our country,” Kras said. “They may have given me a golden key, but each of them holds a key to my heart. I will miss them dearly.” Fair winds and following seas to Carron Kras and her family. You will be greatly missed by the NSA Naples community along with the area retirees.

How to Prepare Before a Volcanic Eruption By Scott Humphreys NSA Naples Emergency Management Officer

If you look at almost any photo, postcard or billboard of Naples, you’re almost sure to see the omnipresent Mount Vesuvius looming large and impressive in the background. Located east of Naples, Mount Vesuvius is most famous volcano in the world, and is best known for its eruption in 79 A.D. that led to the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It has erupted many times since and is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years. Vesuvius is regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of its long – and recent – history of explosive eruptions along with the population of three million people who live nearby. A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a reservoir of molten rock below the surface of the earth. Unlike most mountains, which are pushed up from below, volcanoes are built up by an accumulation of their own eruptive products. When pressure from gases within the molten rock becomes too great, an eruption occurs. Eruptions can be quiet or explosive. There may include lava flows, flattened landscapes, poisonous gases, and flying rock and ash. Because of their intense heat, lava flows are great fire hazards, which destroy everything in their path. Thankfully, they tend to move slowly enough that people have time to escape the hazardous lava flows. Naval activities recognize the potential for a volcano eruption, and they follow preplanned procedures to prevent damage and protect life. Mount Vesuvius is the most studied and sensor-laden volcanos in the world and hasn’t erupted since 1944. Nevertheless you and your family should be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice due to the unpredictable nature of volcanoes. It should also be pointed out that Italy has a Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei Emergency Plan, that in the Italian National Plan, Italy has pre-established danger zones and there are also four Alert Levels: Normal, Attention, Pre-Alert (includes voluntary evacuation) and Alert. Current State of Mt. Vesuvius / Phlegrean Fields ● Mt. Vesuvius: Basic Level ● Phlegrean Fields: Attention Level How to Prepare for a Volcanic Eruption ● Be informed. ● Know whether your area has a history of volcanic eruptions and the status of any volcano nearby. ● Be knowledgeable of the extent of possible evacuation zones established by Italy. ● Make a written family evacuation plan.

● Make a written emergency communication plan in case family members are separated. ● Stay away from volcano sites that show signs of activity. ● Be prepared for other hazards that may accompany a volcanic eruption. ● Build an emergency kit that includes goggles and breathing masks. What to Do if There is a Volcanic Eruption ● Stay tuned to radio for information and instructions. ● If you are told to evacuate: – Do not wait. Leave immediately. – Turn off gas, electricity, and water if time allows. – Take your emergency kit. – Follow designated evacuation routes. ● If you are NOT told to evacuate: – Continue to listen to the radio. An evacuation order may still be issued. – Close and lock all windows and outside doors. – Close fireplace dampers. – Turn off all heating and air conditioning systems and fans. – Gather your emergency supplies. – Go into an interior room with no windows above the ground level. ● If you are trapped outdoors: – Seek shelter immediately. – If you are caught in a rock fall, curl up in a tight ball to protect yourself. – Be aware of mudflows and flooding if you are near a stream. ● Protect yourself from hazardous falling ash: – Stay away from areas downwind of the volcano. – Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. – Wear goggles to protect eyes. – Wear a mask or use a damp cloth over your face to minimize breathing in ash. – Keep car engines off and avoid driving. – Stay inside if possible. ● Once you are in a safe place, muster with your command if you are military or civilian personnel or a member of the selective reserves. What to Do After a Volcanic Eruption ● Continue to listen to radio for information and instructions. ● Stay away from affected areas until otherwise instructed. ● Be careful when entering damaged buildings. ● After a declared emergency, register your needs with the Navy through the Navy Family Accountability and Assessment System (NFAAS) at https://navyfamily.navy.mil/ or call 1-877-414-5358 or 1-866-297-1971 (TDD). A date most movie buffs know by heart, October 21, 2015, is the day Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled to the future in Stephen Spielberg’s 1989 classic “Back to the Future: Part II.” Although you may not have remembered the date, you’ve probably heard of Doc’s DeLorean, which takes 1.21 gigawatts (GW) of power to travel through time. Admittedly, our national labs haven’t quite figured out time travel just yet, but they do analyze power. For instance, at the end of 2017, there was over 144 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power in the United States combined. To help put this number in perspective, it’s important to know just how big 1 gigawatt is. A watt is a measure of power and there’s 1 billion watts in 1 GW. (And if you wanted to break it down even further, 1 million watts = 1 megawatt (MW) and 1,000 watts = 1 kilowatt (kW).) Here are six examples equal to 1 GW of power: ● 3.1 million photovoltaic panels – Based on a representative silicon model panel size of 320 watts. ● 431 utility scale wind turbines – Based on the average utility scale wind turbines size of 2.32 MW installed in 2017. ● 100 million LED light bulbs – Based on typical performance, an LED A19 lamp is roughly 78 lumens per watt and consumes about 10 watts. ● Approximately1.3 million horsepower – Based on horsepower to watts conversion 746 watts = 1 horsepower. ● 2,000 Corvette Z06s – According to the automaker’s website, the Chevy Corvette Z06 engine delivers 650 horsepower. So 2,000 of those engines would equal 1.3 million horsepower. Or 1 GW. ● 9,090 Nissan Leafs – According to the automaker’s website, the Nissan Leaf has a 110 kilowatt (kW) motor. So, 1 million kW divided by 110 = the maximum power of 9,090 Nissan Leafs. For more tips on Energy Conservation call Gennaro Gargiulo or Steelworker 2nd Class Axel Gomez at DSN 626-1895 or Comm. 081-568-1865.

My PCS Checklist – Taking Stress Out of PCS Moves By Cmdr. Erik Wells Sea Warrior Program Public Affairs

The latest upgrade to MyNavy Portal (MNP) includes a checklist to guide Sailors and their families through their next Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move. My PCS Checklist allows Sailors to easily create their own personalized move checklist, and can be found in the Assignment, Leave, and Travel section of MNP under the Career and Life Events drop down menu. There is no question that PCS moves are challenging, whether it is a single Sailor heading across country or a family moving overseas. The process of relocating can be a source of personal, financial and family stress and it requires a great deal of logistical planning. My PCS Checklist makes the process better. Sailors can now create their own personalized checklist by using an intuitive, web-based PCS CHECKLIST

program, to guide them through the PCS process and help eliminate unnecessary stress. “Creating the checklist is easy,” Capt. Chris Harris, director, distribution management division, Navy Personnel Command, said. “Sailors answer a few questions in the online checklist, starting with their official detachment date, which automatically generates a personalized, step-by-step checklist that calculates the number of days to complete each item until their move from their current command. Sailors can print out their checklist at work or email it to a spouse, parent or anyone with whom they want to share the information.” The checklist is broken down into four categories – Shipping Household Goods, Family Move, Money and Sailor Admin. Based on the detachment date selected, the checklist outlines necessary activities, due dates and includes tips and sources of support for each category. The program includes a taskbar that indicates how far along Sailors are in completing their activities and they will receive alerts to remind them to complete the tasks to stay on their PCS timeline. “MyNavy Portal addresses one of the major issues Sailors face when managing their careers – they have to use too many websites to complete routine tasks for managing their careers,” Dave Driegert, PMW 240 assistant program manager, Single Point of Entry for MNP, said. “My PCS Checklist is the newest tool for Sailors and joins other recently-available applications like MyRecord Web 1.0 and electronic Personnel Action Request (ePAR)/1306. MNP is growing all the time. In the months ahead, Sailors will be able to access an increasing number of new features and tools.” Sailors should work with their command pay and personnel administrator if they have any questions concerning PCS policies and procedures. They may also contact MyNavy Career Center 24/7 at askmncc@navy.mil, or toll-free at 833-330-MNCC (6622). In addition to PCS information, MNP provides Sailors links to other webpages and resources – all in one convenient location. Get more information about the Navy from US Navy facebook or twitter. major disaster will be the Support Site, every effort should be made to get to the Support Site. If after a disaster, you and your family are displaced, head to the Support Site for assistance. Evacuation Commander Navy Region Europe Africa and Southwest Asia (CNREURAFSWA) is the primary authority for ordering a wide-spread evacuation. The U.S. Department of State (DOS) in conjunction with NSA Napes are responsible for coordinating the evacuation of US military, civilian, contactor and dependent personnel. Evacuation Routes: The most important disclaimer when planning evacuation routes is the vulnerability of transportation routes to natural disasters or other similar events. Additionally, the designation of evacuation routes must be closely coordinated with the Host nation evacuation plans to mitigate conflicting routes. Primary route would be A1 (Rome). For those who live in and around Mt. Vesuvius, Italy has implemented “Sister Cities” or “Twinning” for assistance. If a disaster happens and you live in Portici for example, the “Sister City” or “Twinning” city is Piedmont in Northern Italy. To find your cities, “Sister City” or “Twinning” cities, visit

http://www.protezionecivile.g ov.it/jcms/ en/view_ dossier.wp?prevPage=dossier &contentId=DOS66215 For those who live in and around Campi Flegrei, Italy has implemented “Sister Cities” or “Twinning” for assistance. If a disaster happens and you live in Pozzuoli for example, the “Sister City” or “Twinning” city is Lombardy in Northern Italy. To that end, every effort will be made to notify personnel of the situation and provide clear instructions. Notification will be made through the following means: Computer Desktop notification System (CDNS), Giant Voice, SMS Text messaging, emergency broadcasts on AFN Radio and Television, email (PAO notes), and social media sites (Facebook, Twitter). Computer Desktop notification System (CDNS) – May also be referred to as ‘AtHoc’. This notification system functions on all computers connected to the OneNet server

and provides for rapid notification to personnel who are at their workstations. Giant Voice – This system may also be referred to as the WAVES system, “Cooper / Madahcom,” “Big Voice” or Public Alerting System (PAS). Giant Voice can be utilized as an automated system with prerecorded messages or the emergency dispatcher can broadcast live messages. Due to propagation and reverberation effects, messages must be succinct to be understood so the system is best suited to provide basic information and instruction on where users can find further information and instruction on where users can find further information. Giant Voice is available on both Capodichino and the Support Site. SMS mass text messaging – The SMS mass text messaging feature in AtHoc can be utilized to quickly disseminate information to personnel who are resisted in the database. Messages must remain brief, so typical SMS messages will direct the receiver to other information sources. Primary – Broadcast via AFN Radio (106.0 FM), CDNS/ATHOC Secondary – Email via the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) or other designated individuals may send out information to personnel listed in allhands email groups. This format is useful as significant

information can be relayed to large group of people if the audience has access to a workstation. The AtHoc system will also send e-mails to work and personal e-mail addresses that users have entered into the system. Social media sites (Facebook, Twitter) – NSA Naples maintains two social media sites to pass information to the general audience: Facebook at http://www.facebook. com/NSANaples and Twitter at www.twitter.com/nsa_ naples. The capabilities and benefits of social media during emergency operations are being widely recognized by its easy accessibility for anyone with an internet connection. This is an excellent resource to rapidly disseminate information to the general audience. Preparedness starts with you. You and your family should be prepared to be selfsufficient for a minimum of three days. By following these steps, you and your family will be better prepared when / if a disaster strikes: ● Have a communication plan for you and your family ● Make your emergency kit today. ● Stay Informed (register for CDNS/ATHOC, buy a small AM/FM radio). ● Lastly and most importantly is train to your plan, test and update your plan as necessary. “There was silence after 52 months of war,” Foggo said. “There was silence after millions of deaths. There was the silence of peace.” Foggo also shared that World War I had a significant personal impact for him. “I often reflect on this war in particular due to my family connection to the continent,” he said. “Although I stand before you today as a United States Navy Admiral, my roots are firmly entrenched in Europe as my Grandfathers were entrenched here, on the Western Front, during the Great War as members of Canadian Expeditionary Force.” With shared values, experiences

and vision, the partnerships forged in World War I continue to ensure U.S. forces, alongside European allies and partners, remain committed to the continued cooperative security. “We are honored to call such men and women – past and present – Americans,” Foggo said. “Americans who joined their allied brothers and sisters to demonstrate unequaled resolve to combat tyranny, and in so doing, inspired the formidable NATO Alliance we maintain today. We are inspired by their service and humbled by their sacrifice.” Approximately 100 American and Belgium Boy and Girl Scouts participated in the ceremony by reading the Presidential Proclamation of Veterans

Day 2018 and reciting the poem “In Flanders Field.” The Scouts also placed wreaths to honor the fallen service members who were laid to rest at Flanders Field. “November 11, Armistice Day, reminds us all of the sacrifices that so many young men and women made 100 years ago in order to ensure freedom and prosperity for generations to come,” Foggo concluded. Healthy Lifestyle Fun Facts U.S. Department of Health & Human Services

Regular physical activity in childhood and adolescence is important for promoting lifelong health and well-being and preventing various health conditions. ● The 2008 U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years should have one hour or more of physical activity each day. ● If you can’t do one hour of exercise per day, then even 10 minutes of exercise will help raise your heart rate and maintain fitness levels. ● Students who are physically active tend to have better grades, better school attendance, better cognitive performance (memory), and better overall classroom behavior. ● Regular physical activity can help children and adolescents improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. ● Active families are fun families. People who work out with a partner and more likely to stick with their fitness regimes.

● Active children are more likely to become active adults. ● Exercising on a regular basis helps boost your immune system. This means you’ll get sick less often than people who don’t exercise. ● Regular exercise can help you to sleep better and to stay asleep. ● Your body’s hardest-working muscle is your heart, which beats approximately 100,000 times each day. Regular exercise is the best way to help keep your heart healthy. ● Listening to music can make working out more fun and more productive. ● Walking at a brisk pace can burn almost as many calories as jogging the same distance. ● Underwater swimming is the only time you should hold your breath while exercising. ● If all 600 muscles in your body pulled in one direction, you could lift 25 tons. ● One of the best ways to get kids to be more active is to limit the amount of time spent in sedentary activities, especially watching TV or other screens. Nearly one-third of high school students play video or computer games for three or more hours each day.
