Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), Adm. John Richardson, and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Russell Smith visited U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet headquarters at Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy, November 20, 2018. During the visit, CNO and MCPON met with senior leadership before holding an all-hands call for the Naples region Sailors and Navy civilians. “This theater has become sort of the case study,” Richardson said. “The leading thinkers, the actors in terms of what our Navy is doing. Some of the most exciting stuff that we are doing.” CNO went on and praised the Sailors for their implementation and execution of new defense strategies such as Defense Secretary James Mattis’ Dynamic Force Employment with the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group in U.S. 6th Fleet.

NSA Naples Military Work Dogs, Handlers Conduct Exercise at Carney Park Naval Support Activity Naples Security Military Working Dog (MWD) Division conducted a joint training exercise along with members from the U.S. Army Veterinary Clinic onboard Support Site at Carney Park on November 16. The participants hiked five miles of rugged terrain along the caldera of the extinct volcano, Monte Gauro, with full rucksacks. At various stages along the trek they stopped to conduct several mission-oriented training drills throughout the exercise. At one of the stations Army Veterinarian Capt. Kate Fodor (back) along with Veterinary Technician Rikki Inman (left) provided simulated emergency veterinary care for Military Working Dog Toto (a three year old German Shepherd) while his handler Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Austin Klinkhammer held and calmed his partner during the exercise. The veterinarians also took vital signs, “diagnosed” and “treated” heat casualties, administered intravenous fluids, set splints and “provided” combat first aid for open chest and abdominal wounds. The dogs and their handlers also conducted explosive detection training, including locating buried explosives and identifying, tracking and apprehending suspects. Europe’s Top Navy Leader Commemorates Armistice Day, Honors Veterans at Flanders Field By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Ryan Riley

Adm. James G. Foggo III, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa and Allied Joint Force Command Naples, Italy, commemorated Armistice Day during a commemoration held at Flanders Field American Cemetery and Memorial in Waregem, Belgium, November 11, 2018. This year is the 100th anniversary of the armistice signed by allies of World War I and Germany for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front. The armistice took effect at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. “We find ourselves today on a hallowed battlefield of the Ypres-Lys offensive,” Foggo said. “The majority of the 368 headstones are for men who died during the last days of the war. The secluded recesses of the cemetery represent the four American divisions who fought in Belgium. More than 81,000 U.S. service members died in Europe, including 1,043 on Belgian soil.” The armistice expired after 36 days and the following year a formal peace agreement, the Treaty of Versailles, was signed.
