NHS Wildcat Softball, Baseball Teams Walk Away 1-1 in Sigonella By Brenda Dye

The Naples Wildcats travelled to Sigonella, Sicily, this past weekend and both teams left with 1-1 records.

Girls Softball On Friday, the Lady Wildcats started strong and were tied at the end of the first inning, but Sigonella wasn’t going down without a fight, scoring five runs in the second. Naples had nine hits, including a triple by Sarah Kemp and a double by Emily Coulter, but that wasn’t enough to beat the Jaguars and the Wildcats lost 8-10. After such a close loss, the Lady Wildcats were looking to come away with a win on Saturday, and they exceeded their own expectations by batting 13 hits, including three extra base hits, and beating Sigonella 15-8 in six innings. Naples jumped to an early 4-0 lead at the top of the first inning led with an RBI single by Jayla Martin that brought in Carly Sharp, a steal of home by both Martin and Maria McLeod, and an RBI single by Sierra Dye that brought in Sierra Julian. Both teams battled over the lead until the fifth inning when the Wildcats scored six runs from outstanding and smart hitting by players Julianna Betancourt, who hit a two-run homerun, Sarah Kemp with a single homerun, a walk by Brittany Bolton and an RBI single by Nadia Arce. Up to 250 additional U.S. personnel are being deployed to Syria to support local forces on the ground and build on successes of U.S. forces already deployed there in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, the Pentagon’s press secretary said April, 25. The additional personnel include special operations forces and medical and logistics personnel, Peter Cook told reporters at the Pentagon. The forces are to build on the gains of 50 previously deployed special operators in Syria, he said. During a speech in Germany today, President Barack Obama announced the deployment of the additional forces. He said the expertise of the special operations forces already on the ground in Syria has been critical as local forces drive ISIL out of key areas.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

On Monday, Italy celebrated its Anniversary of Liberation commemorating the end of the Italian Civil War and the end of Nazi occupation during World War II. Naples has a particularly harrowing World War II history as the most bombed city in Italy. An estimated 20,000 of the city’s inhabitants died during the raids from 19401943. In late September of 1943 the people of Naples and the Italian Resistance fought together to force out the German forces occupying the city. The Italian Campaign began with the amphibious invasion of Sicily in July of 1943. Over the next two years, until the surrender of German Armed Forces in Italy in May of 1945, the Italian Liberation Corps or Co-belligerent Army fought on the side of the Allied forces to oust the pro-Axis forces. Without their help victory may well have been impossible. We’ve come a long way since WWII, and the country of Italy is now our host and partner to improve security and stability across the globe. This week Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa is hosting the Combined Force Maritime Component Commander (CFMCC) Flag Course at Capodichino. During the course senior naval leaders from maritime countries in Europe and Africa participated in seminars and discussions focusing on the effective employment of naval forces in a joint, coalition or interagency environment. This practical application of maritime capabilities to real-world scenarios helps to improve the effectiveness joint and combined maneuver at the operational level. Supporting the tenant commands and needs of the fleet is part of the mission of NSA Naples and we are happy to have hosted such a prestigious event. Tonight we celebrate the closing of the Month of the Military Child with our annual Take back the Night Event starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Support Site Central Park. Take Back the Night is an international event designed to raise awareness and end rape and other forms of sexual, relationship, and domestic violence in all forms. Hundreds of events are held in more than 30 countries annually. This year we will be hosting a number of events and activities including a bounce house, command chili cook-off, Pasta Fest by the WRA, a bike rodeo, giant tricycle competitions, packing of fear to freedom boxes, a photo booth and more. Come out and show your support. Stay safe this weekend and be sure to stop by on Saturday to participate in the rescheduled opening ceremonies for youth sports and Flea Market on Carney Park!

Henri Cartier-Bresson Photos on display at PAN Art Gallery in Naples The PAN art gallery and museum (Palazzo delle arti) in Naples in Via dei Mille is holding the “Mind’s Eye,” an exhibition of the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, a pioneer of photojournalism and nicknamed “the eye of the century.” Fifty-four phtographic works which are considered among the most important “icons” of the photographer are on display. Ancient Man Brought to ‘Life’ by Dutch Artists Unveiled This Week In October 1993, speleologists discovered a partially preserved fossilized skeleton of a man in a limestone cave, the Grotta di Lamalunga, near the city of Altamura, southern Puglia region. It was dated to 130,000 years ago and classified as an archaic Homo sapiens with some Neanderthal features. A pair of Dutch artists who specialize in paleontological reconstruction presented on Tuesday their life-size version of the man. According to the reconstruction, the so-called Man of Altamura was of stocky build, about 1.65 meters tall (about five-and-a-half feet tall), had a jutting brow, a wide pelvis, an elongated cranium and a very big nose. Famous TV Chef’s Vegan Fare Not a Hit at Bologna Soup Kitchen A famous Italian chef, who has his own TV show, was surprised when some homeless people at a soup kitchen in Bologna, which is famous for its tagliatelle al ragu’ and tortellini, didn’t appreciate his new vegan menu and threatened to return to the streets without eating. The chef, who recently started cooking for free at the soup kitchen once a week during lunch time, introduced a range of healthy, organic food and vegetables for the soup kitchen cus-

tomers. He accepted some criticism and noted that some guests were very satisfied with the vegetarian menu, however, meat was back on the menu for the rest of the week. The soup kitchen will begin opening in the evening on May 9, and the chef is confident that he can serve vegetarian meatballs and bean sausages to homeless and refugees of the center, without causing another food riot. Pajama Party at Piazza Bellini May 11 A pajama party is usually organized at home but on May 11 at Piazza Bellini in Naples there will be a big open pajama party. Inside a pavilion visitors can admire caterpillars, chrysalis, live and dried butterflies from many different species from Africa, Australia and South America. Tickets can be purchased online or on site. The exhibition will observe extraordinary opening up to 8 p.m. on May 6-8. Tickets are 6 euro. Italians – World’s Largest Producers of Wine – Now Drinking Less Wine For the first time ever Italy’s wine consumption dropped last year. Italy became the world’s largest wine producer in 2015 surpassing France. It is reported that Italians however lost their thirst for the wine. According to the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), the United States topped the list of the world’s biggest wine-drinking followed by France and Germany. Italian producers say that part of the change is because while Italians are drinking less wine, they are opting for higher quality fare, especially bottles registered as superior with “denomination of origin” or “denomination of controlled origin” labels.

NAVY HISTORY: FIRST AMERICAN MANNED SPACE FLIGHT From National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Fifty-five years ago, Mercury astronaut Navy Cmdr. Alan Shepard Jr. became the first American in space. On May 5, 1961, Shepard launched at 9:34 a.m. ET aboard his Freedom 7 capsule, powered by a Redstone booster, dubbed Mercury-Redstone 3. Shepard’s flight had been delayed several times, leading him to launch three weeks after Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, became the first man in space. Shepard’s flight aboard Freedom 7 lasted a mere 15 minutes and 28 seconds, and covered a distance of 303 statute miles. He reached an altitude of 116.5 statute miles with a velocity of 5,134 mph. Recovery was by HUS1 helicopter of HMR(L)-262 from the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain (CVS 39). After splashing down to Earth, Alan was met with fanfare and even received a personal phone call from President Kennedy who had watched Alan's flight on television. The “Kennedy Call” would become a tradition for all manned Mercury flights. The main scientific objective of project Mercury was to determine man’s capabilities in a space environment and in those environments to which he will be subject upon going into and returning from space. A few of the basic flight problems included: the development of an automatic escape system, vehicle control during insertion, behavior of space systems, evaluation of pilots capabilities in space, in flight monitoring, retrofire and reentry maneuvers and landing and recovery. After medical tests and debriefings Alan was found to be in excellent

shape, which meant that America’s manned space flight program would move forward. Shepard was born Nov. 18, 1923, in East Derry, New Hampshire, and later graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1944. He served onboard the destroyer USS Cogswell (DD 651) in the Pacific theater during the last year of World War II. He later became a Naval Aviator and test pilot. In 1959 Shepard was selected by the newly created National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from a field of 110 candidates to become one of the “original Seven” Mercury astronauts. In 1964 Shepard was grounded because of Meniere’s disease, an inner ear disorder. He worked as Chief of the Astronaut Office until 1969 when a new surgical technique cleared up his ear problem. He was soon restored to full flight status, and was named commander of Apollo 14. A decade after making his historic flight, Shepard, the oldest astronaut in the space program at the age of 47, achieved his life-long dream; he stepped onto the surface of the moon on Feb. 5, 1971, becoming not only the fifth person to walk on the surface of the moon, but also the only one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts to make it to the moon. “It’s been a long way, but we’re here,” he reported to Houston after Above: Navy Cmdr. DOD Launches MilitaryChildCare.com at NSA Naples Website Provides Families a Single Online Gateway to Military Child Care From MWR

Families at Naval Support Activity Naples will have access to a new Department of Defense (DoD) website on June 15, 2016, which is designed to simplify and improve the child care request for care process. MilitaryChildCare.com (MCC) provides a single online gateway for families to access military-operated or military-subsidized child care options worldwide across all Services. The site enables families to create a household profile, conduct child care searches, submit requests for care, and manage their requests at any

time and from any location. The new DoD site – which is being introduced worldwide in phases – offers a more streamlined approach to finding and requesting care, expedites placement through a standardized request process and waitlist management tools, and provides reports that help programs better plan for future placement needs. Through MilitaryChildCare.com, eligible families can search and request care for full day and part day options in facility-based and home-based programs for children from birth through age 12. Families may remain on a preferred

program’s waitlist even after being offered care or enrolling in another program. Families at NSA Naples who are currently on waiting lists will be automatically transitioned to the new web-based system. These families will retain the original date of their request(s) for care, and all program enrollment processes will remain the same. For additional information, go to MilitaryChildCare. com or contact the Help Desk by calling the toll-free number, 855.696.2934 or emailing FamilySupport@ MilitaryChildCare.com.

ENERGY CONSERVATION Fuel Conservation Tips From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Fuel conservation is important because not all fuels are renewable. This means we should use them as sparingly as possible and find alternative sources of energy because once these resources are depleted we will not be able to obtain them again. There are several technological advances being utilized today in an effort to conserve fuel. Fuel cells produce electrical power without any combustion and operate on fuels like hydrogen, natural gas and propane. They are a clean alternative to gasoline-powered generators. NASCAR uses at least 30 gasoline-powered generators to power remote cameras and broadcasting equipment during each race. If gasoline-powered generators were replaced with fuel cell units, they estimate that more than $2,000 per race weekend could be saved. That’s a savings of $77,000 over the course of the season. Plus, fuel cell generators only have to be refueled once per weekend helping improve race safety and logistics. Fuel Saving Tips ● Drive smoothly. Slowing down gradually, rather than jamming on the brakes, then accelerating slowly can save you as much as two miles per gallon. ● When driving on the highway, use your cruise control to maintain a steady speed. ● Remove unnecessary heavy items from your car. Every 100 pounds extra costs you about half a mile per gallon. ● Riding a bike or walk to work, to the local neighborhood store or to a nearby friend’s home, will cut your vehicle emissions to zero. ● Don’t start your car until you’re ready to move; idling engines waste gas. If you are idling for more than one minute turn the engine off. ● You can improve your gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil.

What it means to be a Victim’s Advocate HM1 Rachele Almaraz USNH Naples

The month of April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and an integral member of the team is the Victim Advocate. Since the late 1960s, the field of victim’s assistance has evolved from a movement of committed individuals and nonprofit organizations into a professional discipline, encompassing a wide range of diverse medical, legal, and social communities and organizations dedicated to serving victims of crime. Sexual assault is a crime. It includes a sexual act committed by a threat, bodily harm, a fraudulent representation, or when a person cannot consent due to impairment by drugs or alcohol. The traumatic and psychological effects that sexual assault can have on survivors are real. Studies have shown that a traumatic event, such as a sexual assault can lead to PTSD, and most survivors will require some type of professional help in order to overcome these effects. The victim advocate plays a role in this support. The heart of the Department of the Navy’s sexual assault response program is the Sexual Assault Response Coordinators (SARC) and the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Victim Advocates (SAPR VA). They

support the victims throughout the reporting and response process. The VAs and SARCs are guided by a code of ethics that consists of values that range from client autonomy, privacy, honesty, and equity of service; compassion and respect for individuals; and also working within one’s range of competence in order to best support sexual assault survivors. Victim Advocates provide their survivors with essential non-clinical support, information of available options and resources, and also maintain communication and contact with the survivor as needed for continued victim support. There are two types of reporting options, restricted and unrestricted reporting. Restricted reporting allows the survivor to receive advocacy support, medical treatment, counseling, and a Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE) without starting a formal criminal investigation or being identified by the command. Unrestricted reporting allows the survivor all the same support as restricted reporting, but it also includes filing an official report through the survivor’s chain of command, legal, and law enforcement, to maximize accountability of the sexual assault. It does not matter how long ago the sexual assault occurred, a report can always be made. In order to make a restricted

report, the survivor must talk to a VA, SARC, or Medical. According to SAPR.mil, 26,000 service members had unwanted sexual contact in FY-13. That is a mind-blowing amount of our “brothers and sisters.” The Department of the Navy Sexual Assault and Prevention Office has developed many wonderful trainings to help Sailors understand that sexual assault is a problem, that there is help, and that there are options available for survivors. Sexual assault can happen to anyone. Though the Navy trains Sailors it still happens. Those involved can’t fathom how this happens to them? They’ve been to training, they’ve expected their Shipmates to treat them with respect, yet it happens and is a sad and unfortunate truth. But thanks to the SAPR program, training continues, victim advocates are there for survivors to try and make their life changing situation a little more bearable, so they do not feel completely alone. Hopefully the month of April was an opportunity to reflect on the harsh reality of sexual assault. But for those reading this, know that sexual assault is a crime and we as members of the armed forces should be taking steps to prevent it every month, every day.

SYRIAN FORCES from page 1 The additional personnel will be establishing connections with capable forces on the ground, working on getting a better picture of the battlespace, and improving the intelligence and targeting assessment, Cook said. “They will help our partners on the ground capitalize on their progress and increase the pressure on ISIL at this critical time,” Cook said, adding Defense Secretary Ash Carter believes this deployment will make a “tangible”

WILDCATS from page 1 “The Naples Lady Wildcats played with fierce defense and teamwork to outscore the Sigonella Jaguars on Saturday,” Coach Cynda Mastermann said. Senior Emily Coulter was the catcher for both games and had two clutch hits, while Freshmen Carly Sharp played an error-free First Base, reached base five times in two games and had eight stolen bases. Boys Baseball The Boys Baseball team showed up Friday night confident and ready to play. Senior Robert Dromerhauser was untouchable, pitching a nohitter for the first four innings and finishing the game giving up only one hit, one walk and 15 strikeouts in a total of only 80 pitches.

difference in the campaign to defeat ISIL. The intent is not to have the forces on the front lines or engaged in direct combat, Cook said. Rather, he explained, they will be enabling and supporting local forces who have made gains against ISIL, and meeting with other capable forces to build on the momentum. The spokesman added the U.S. forces will be in harm’s way and will be able to defend themselves if they come under fire.

Catcher Nick Hanford-Garcia ended the game with a great throw from behind the plate to Dradon Ingle at second base to stop the Jaguar runner from stealing, giving the Wildcats a 4-0 win. Saturday night proved more challenging as the Wildcats were down 6-2 with only 30 seconds left on the game clock to start a new inning. The Wildcats showed they were not ready to go home and rallied when Nick Hanford-Garcia singled, followed by a walk from Jhalon Cady and Bailey Ward getting hit by a pitch and advancing to first base. Carter Lassen hit a hard line drive down the middle that was miraculously caught by their short-stop. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Dromerhauser proved cool under pressure and hit a two RBI double to center field

and the Wildcats fans went crazy. Senior Josh Thurston kept the momentum going by hitting a two RBI double all the way to the warning track in center field, tying the game 6-6. Unfortunately, when the Jaguars had their turn at bat, after two outs and one player on second base, the last batter hit an RBI single just over the infield to end the game with the Wildcats losing 6-7. “It was a great weekend of baseball even with the upset of Saturday’s game,” Coach Brenda Stolken said. “We learned from our loss and this is going to be our fuel for the rest of the season. We as coaches and players are going to be stepping up our game.” The Wildcats are on the road for their next games and travel up to Vicenza April 29-30 to play doubleheaders against the Division I schools of Vilseck and Stuttgart. Their last home games for the season will be on May 7 at Carney Park where they will play Sigonella again. So, mark your calendars and come cheer on the Wildcats as they prepare for Europeans in Germany. Steps to Fixing Your Record and Communicating With the Selection Board and all adverse information. Make sure your evaluations are readable, that they reflect the correct social security number, the correct spelling of your name and properly documented PFA scores. While in BOL, go to the ‘ODC, OSR, PSR’ tab and open your PSR. The board will see PSR part I, II, and III. Review those so you know exactly what the board is seeing.

Keeping up with your awards, evaluations, qualifications and degrees will help ensure your record is correctly documented when it comes time for you to submit your package to the chief’s board. Keeping up with administrative requirements in the Navy may just be the toughest job each Sailor has. In a perfect world, every Sailor is keeping multiple copies of their awards, evaluations, qualifications, degrees and are checking their record regularly to make sure that everything is being correctly documented and if not, is taking immediate action to rectify the situation. In reality, many Sailors will wait until they find out they are chief petty officer selection board eligible. Then they will submit a package to the board with 150 documents and will spend the next three months trying to contact old commands to get copies of evaluations that never made it into their record. Having a jacked up record is a sure fire way of ensuring you are not selected. If you cannot take care of yourself, how on earth

can the board trust you to take care of your Sailors? But not to worry. This article is going to break down the process of submitting a package to the board and correcting your records. So let us begin. Eval Continuity The first thing you want to do is make sure that you do not have any missing evaluations in your record. There is a very easy way to do this. 1. Using your CAC, log onto https://www.bol.navy.mil/ 2. From the center menu click CCA/FITREP/EVAL Reports 3. Under Reports click the highlighted Performance Evaluation Continuity Report 4. Scroll to the bottom. Under Missing Periods you will see any evaluation gaps you have. Even if you don’t appear to have any gaps, go line by line through the report, just to verify. If you do have gaps and do not know the location of a reporting senior, or need other assistance in resolving these missing periods, contact the Navy Personnel Command Service Center at 1-

866-U-ASK-NPC. Evaluations, correction letters, extension letters and statements in lieu of evaluation must be sent to NPC, PERS-32. Example letters can be found at the following links: Correction letter – http://www.navy.mil/ah_online/ documents/ADMINISTRATIVE %20CHANGE%20(vs1).docx Statement in lieu of evaluation – http://www.navy.mil/ah_online/documents/Statement%20i n%20Lieu%20Template.docx OMPF 1. Using your CAC, log onto https://www.bol.navy.mil/ 2. From the center menu click on your OMPF This is your record. The board will see everything in field codes 30 through 38. This includes enlistment and reenlistment contracts, history of assignments, administrative remarks, DD214s, miscellaneous professional service history, evaluations, training and education, decorations and awards

Awards 1. Go to https://awards.navy.mil/awards/ webapp01.nsf/(frmQPersAwards)?OpenForm 2. Fill out the top of the form and hit search in the right hand corner. Are all your awards there? Do you have copies of what’s missing? If so, take those copies to your NDAWS Authority so they can verify authenticity and submit them electronically. NDAWS will only reflect Combat Action Ribbons or higher, so if you have FLOCs, MUCs, Pistol quals, etc., you can verify those in NSIPS. https://nsipsprod.nmci.navy.mil/nsipsclo/jsp/ index.jsp Degrees 1. Go to https://jst.doded.mil/smart/signI n.do 2. Register for your Joint Services Transcript. 3. Click Transcripts at the top. Is your degree there? If not, you will need to contact the college and have them mail your official transcripts to: NETPDTC, Joint Services Transcript (JST) ATTN: JST Operations Center N615 6490 Saufley Field Road Pensacola, FL 32509 This needs to come from your college. You cannot mail this in yourself. Letter to the Board So you’ve checked your record and one of two things happened. Either everything was in there and you are good to go, or you have things you need to add or correct. If everything is good to go, you may still choose to send a letter to the board notifying them that you have checked your record and have found no discrepancies. However, this is not mandatory or even necessary. If there were things you needed to have added to your record, you may choose to send those things to the board, despite having taken measures to correct them. This will ensure the board sees them and considers them. If you have accomplished significant achievements since your last evaluation that you want the board to consider, then you will need to write a letter and submit a package. You can find a sample letter to the board at this URL:

http://www.navy.mil/ah_online/d ocuments/CPOLTB-Sample.doc What to Include in Your Package Please include any awards, degrees, qualifications, and achievements that are not yet in your record and that you would like the board to consider. It is critical to make sure your SSN is documented in the upper left corner of every page you submit. Do not be redundant. There is no reason to submit your history of assignments, your qualification sheet, your awards print out or anything else that can be found in your record. Your job is only to ensure your record is an accurate reflection of your career, fix any discrepancies, and send the board a letter with significant information you want them to consider. How to Send Your Package The preferred method for submission of a LTB is by encrypted email to cscselboard@navy.mil. Emailed LTBs must be encrypted to protect personally identifiable information (PII). Trouble with file encryption or certificate issues does not justify a late LTB. If the candidate is unable to send an encrypted e-mail, they may utilize the safe access file exchange (SAFE) website at https://safe.amrdec. army.mil/safe to transmit their LTB to cscselboard@navy.mil. In order for the LTBs to be considered by the board, the NPC CSC must receive the e-mail notification of the file upload from SAFE before the LTB deadline. If unable to email or use the SAFE website, candidates may use regular mail to the following addresses: SELRES/Mobilized E7 Board – Navy Personnel Command Customer Service Center President FY-17 Reserve E7 Selection Board #335 5720 Integrity Drive Millington, TN 38055 FTS E7 Board – Navy Personnel Command Customer Service Center President FY-17 Reserve E7 Selection Board #336 5720 Integrity Drive Millington, TN 38055 Active E7 Board – Navy Personnel Command Customer Service Center President FY-17 Active E7 Selection Board #360 5720 Integrity Drive Millington, TN 38055 Please note that certified or registered mail is not advised due to delays in handling. DAILY TOURS

Celebrating the Fourth of July at Carney Park, Support Site By Chris Kasparek NSA Community Recreation Director

Where is the coolest place that you have ever seen fireworks during Independence Day? Pearl Harbor? New York? Washington, D.C.? Boston? In Port? At Sea? All of these are great locations, but you haven’t lived until you’ve seen fireworks from the inside of a volcano. If you are new to Naples, then this is your chance; and if you haven’t seen it yet, then come on over while you still have a chance before you PCS. On July 2, MWR’s annual Fireworks Display will take place as a part of our grand Fourth of July festivities at Carney Park. This summer is extra special, as it also marks our 50th anniversary of Carney Park. The reverberation of the sound bouncing off of the walls of the extinct volcano as fireworks burst overhead while being accompanied to the tunes of Ray Charles, Lee Greenwood, and John Phillips Sousa, to name just a few, is an amazing and unforgettable experience.

Over the next few months, we will be putting out all kinds of information about the specifics of the event. What we can tell you now is the following: The event will take place over two days; July 1 and 2, and is open and free to all U.S. military ID card-holders, U.S. contractor ID cardholders, local national employees, JFC Carney Park privilege card-holders, and family members. No event guest passes will be sold for the July 1 activities, which include Grammy-nominated performer Tori Kelly and the kick-off of a Year of Celebration for the 50th Anniversary of Carney Park. July 2 activities include a Queen Cover Band along with fireworks. Eligible patrons may sponsor guests into the July 2 activities for $4 each, with passes available June 1. The specifics for how many each authorized member can sponsor and the rules for that will come out in later articles and in further MWR Marketing announcements. Finally, on the Fourth of July, we will be having an Independence Day BBQ at Central Park on board Support Site with the Kelly Bell Band. We will release further details as they become available.
