Navy Community Recreation’s annual Holiday Village Tree Lighting event took place in the evening of November 30 at the Support Site Village Forum. Cheers and applause filled the Village Forum Courtyard when the festive lights came to life and artificial snow fell on the NSA Naples community members, signaling the official start of the holiday season. The NATO Forces Fuel Coupons will officially be replaced by new NATO Forces Fuel Cards – beginning January 1, 2019. Among America’s few seafaring presidents, former President George H.W. Bush passed away November 30 at his Houston, Texas, home at the age of 94. “Today, I join the Navy-Marine Corps team, our Nation, and the world in mourning the loss of President George H.W. Bush. Navy Pilot. Congressman. Ambassador to the United Nations. CIA Director. Vice President. President. Father. Husband,” Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer said in a statement from Washington. “To paraphrase his own words, President Bush’s life is a shining example of service ‘like a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful sky.’ I offer my deepest condolences to the Bush family, their friends, loved ones, and all who had the privilege of knowing President H.W. Bush.” Bush enlisted in the US Naval Reserve June 13, 1942, on his 18th birthday after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. He had preflight training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and became one of the youngest naval aviators. resident George H. W. Bush’s Passing this past weekend was indeed sad news, but it also marked the chance to reflect on the life and service of one of our Navy’s own. As Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson stated, the country lost “a great leader” and the Navy “a true shipmate.” Bush enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday in 1942 and went on to commission as one of the youngest naval aviators at the time. As a torpedo bomber pilot, he flew 58 combat missions over the Pacific in his Grumman TBM Avenger, including one during which he was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire. After the war and throughout his political career, President Bush would speak fondly of his time in the Navy. He said once, “My Navy days taught me the true meaning of friendship and of freedom… And they made a man out of a scared kid.” I hope everyone was able to take a few minutes this Wednesday to think about those who have gone before us in service to our nation, and about how our own service has molded us into the people we are today. If you didn’t, please take a moment this weekend to do so. Please also join me in echoing our Navy’s sentiments as we wish President Bush fare winds and following seas. We have the watch shipmate. Today and the rest of this weekend are also opportunities to reflect on our Navy’s history. This morning marks the 77th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. At 0748, the base was attacked by more than 350 Imperial Japanese aircraft launched from six carriers. 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded. The surprise attack directly led to the United States’ entry into World War II, and for many American service members, it was the reason they entered into military service. As members of the several generations who witnessed the attacks on September 11th, 2001, I think most of us can relate to that kind of call to service. I think we can also all appreciate a much happier piece of our military’s rich history that we’ll get to celebrate tomorrow. I’m of course talking about our nation’s 128th annual Army-Navy Football Game! In 1890, the two branches met up for what would become an infamous but friendly rivalry. This year you can join our MWR team in celebrating by heading over to Carney Park at 10:30 a.m. for a flag football game and head over to Striker’s Bowling Alley to watch the game. I want to end this week’s column by pointing your attention back to the front page. On Saturday, we announced the transition from tax free fuel coupons to fuel cards. This week’s Panorama contains a full article on the transition and what our community members need to know. Longer Lifespans Means Definition of Senior Citizens in Italy Changing from 65 to 75 In Italy, citizens will now be considered old after 75, according to the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics. Today, a 65-year-old has the physical and cognitive shape of a 40-45-year-old 30 years ago, said a professor of gerontology at the University of Florence. According to research, nine out of ten Italian seniors are in good health and one in three do physical exercise. Life expectancy in Italy has increased by 20 years, in fact the population between 60 and 75 is in excellent shape and free of diseases due to the delayed effect of the development of diseases and the age of death. Statistical surveys said the life expectancy for women is 85 years, 82 to 83 for men, and this is above the European average of 79-years-old. Earthquakes Registered at Vesuvius – No Damage to Iconic Volcano In the early hours of Monday morning, a swarm of earthquakes struck the Vesuvius volcano in Naples measuring 2.4 with an epicenter depth of 1.63 kilometers. The director of the Vesuvius Observatory stated that all these parameters are under mod-

eration and do not show any anomalies. According to the Vesuvius Observatory, minor tremors have been detected on the volcano for some time. Residents of its slopes have reportedly felt shocks and tremors, though no damage has so far been recorded. Forty-Five Palermo-Based Mobsters Arrested this Week Forty-five mobsters including the new head of the Mafia families in Palermo were arrested on Tuesday. Each suspect is reportedly accused of mafia association and aggravated extortion. According to police, the Mafia boss was suspected to have taken over leadership of the mafia clan after the death of Toto Riina who died in prison last year after spending almost a quarter of century behind bars. The Deputy Prime Ministers praised the Palermo Carabinieri for their effort in the investigations. Italian Scientists Warn Time Running Out to Stop Climate Change The Chief of Italy’s Higher Health Institute said that we have only 20 years to save our planet from climate change and the devastating effects to the environment if we do not change our damaging habits, which are negatively impacting the climate.

Fair winds and following seas, Mr. President.” From the Pacific skies during World War II to the Oval Office at the fall of the Berlin Wall, Bush was most remembered for his successful offensive against Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s 1990 invasion of its oil-rich neighbor Kuwait. At the end of Operation Desert Storm, Bush’s

approval ratings skyrocketed. In 1990, Time magazine named him the Man of the Year. In 1991, the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation awarded Bush its Lone Sailor award for his naval and subsequent government service. Bush was born June 12, 1924, in Milton, Massachusetts. On January 6, 1945, he married Barbara Pierce of Rye, New York. They had six children: George, Robin (who died of leukemia in 1953), Jeb, Neil, Marvin, and Dorothy Bush Koch. Father Bush lived to see his son George W. Bush as being elected the 43rd president in 2000. After his Yale graduation, Bush had worked in oil industry in Texas. Following an unsuccessful bid for a Senate seat in 1964, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1966 from Texas’ 7th District. He was reelected to the House two years later without opposition. He held a number of important leadership positions in the 1970s. In 1971, he was named U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. He served there until

1973, when he became Chairman of the Republican National Committee. In 1976, he was appointed Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. In 1980, Ronald Reagan selected George Bush to be his running mate, and Bush was sworn in for the first of two terms as vice president in 1981. Seven years later, Bush became his Republican Party’s nominee and the American people’s choice to be the president of the United States. Serving from 1989 to 1993, Bush and his wife, Barbara, who died in April 2018, remained prominent public figures. George H.W. Bush had expressed the meaning of the Navy for him in an address aboard USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77): “My Navy days taught me the true meaning of friendship and of freedom. The local Lions Club Piedimonte Matese “I Sanniti” sponsored an event to clean the historic path leading from Piazza Europa to the Megalithic Wall built by the Sannites Community, fourth to sixth century B.C., along with a section of the municipal green area on November 24. In addition to the local authorities, various social clubs and associations, a number of

The groups were welcomed by the Mayor of Piedimonte Matese, Dr. Luigi Di Lorenzo and councilmen from the Province of Caserta Prof. Gianluigi Santillo. The task was quite challenging, because part of the path was located along a rather steep hill side. Safe Cooking for the Holidays From NSA Naples Fire & Emergency Services

As the holidays approach one of the most common places families gather is in the kitchen to prep food for the holiday feasts. That increased kitchen time also means increased potential for home fires Fire Inspector Don Warnick of NSA Naples Fire & Emergency Services notes that the leading cause of kitchen fires is unattended cooking. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that Thanksgiving ranks at the top of the list for home fires involving cooking equipment with three times the average number; we can be thankful if we’ve navigated Thanksgiving without a fire, but Christmas Day and Christmas Eve also have an increase in the number of fires. “Cooking for the holidays brings family and friends together,” Warnick said. “As you’re preparing for the holidays, and perhaps organizing a large feast with family and friends, remember that by following a few simple safety tips, you can enjoy time with your loved ones and keep yourself and your family safer from fire.” Warnick suggests that cooks add a few “ingredients” to their menu for a safe holiday: ● Always stay in the kitchen when cooking; keep a close eye on the food, especially when frying

and sautéing with oil. ● When cooking a meal that takes a long time like roasting a turkey or baking a roast, check it frequently. ● Be alert and focused when cooking; it’s easy to get distracted when there is a lot of activity around you. If you’re sleepy or have had an extra glass of wine, ask others to take over in the kitchen. Or save the vino for during dinner or after you’ve cleared the table and washed the dishes. ● Keep things that can catch fire, such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels away from the cooking area. ● Make sure kids stay at least three feet away from the stove and oven, hot food, and liquids. ● Move matches and utility lighters out of reach of children. ● Secure cords from electric knives, the coffee maker, plate warmer, mixer, and other cooking equipment at the far end of counters so no one accidentally pulls them off the edge. Warnick also notes that unattended cooking continues to be the number one cause of fires in the United States and on military installations. “Always stay present when cooking,” he added. Using these energy-efficient tips will not only protect the planet, but will keep holiday cheer alive by saving you energy and money. Shopping Thousands of paper and plastic bags end up in landfills energy year. Rather than adding to the number, shop with reusable cloth bags. This reduces waste and allows for sturdier transportation of your gifts (trust me I’ve ripped enough plastic bags, breaking gifts and spilling new clothes onto dirty snow, to have learned my lesson). If you don’t plan to use cloth bags, try to consolidate your purchases into as few bags as possible. Also remember to unload your car after shopping trips. Decorating When you are decorating your home this holiday season, be sure to use LED lights. They only cost $0.27 to light a six-foot tree for 12 hours a day for 40 days, compared to $10 for incandescent lights. Setting your lights on a timer will also ensure your lights turn on and off at specific times. Wrapping When you are wrapping your gifts, consider using recycled or reused paper. HISTORY: ‘DAY OF INFAMY’ From the National Archives

Early in the afternoon of December 7, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Hopkins, his chief foreign policy aide, were interrupted by a telephone call from Secretary of War Henry Stimson, who informed the president that the Empire of Japan had attacked the American naval fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. At about 5 p.m., following meetings with his military advisers, the Roosevelt calmly and decisively dictated to his secretary, Grace Tully, a request to Congress for a declaration of war. Roosevelt had composed the speech in his head after deciding on a brief, uncomplicated appeal to the people of the United States rather than a thorough recitation of Japanese perfidies, as Secretary of State Cordell Hull had urged. Roosevelt then revised the draft to update military information, and to

strengthen the tone of the speech. Most significantly was changing the first line from “a date which will live in world history” to “a date which will live in infamy.” Tully then prepared the final reading copy, which Roosevelt subsequently altered in three more places. On December 8, at 12:30 p.m., Roosevelt addressed a joint session of Congress and the nation via radio. The speech was brief, running just a little over seven minutes, but it was moving,

powerful and persuasive. The Senate responded with a near-unanimous vote in support of war, with only Montana pacifist Jeanette Rankin dissenting.

At 4 p.m. that day, Roosevelt signed a declaration of war against Japan. Three days after the president’s speech, Germany and Italy, both declared

war on the United States. Congress responded immediately by declaring war on them. Thus, the United States became embroiled in World War II.

Why Is It Getting Colder Outside? From NSA Public Affairs

In the Northern Hemisphere the months of November through February are cold. That’s well known, but why? Many think it’s because the Earth is closer to the sun during the summer and further from it in winter. Actually, that’s not true. In fact, the Earth in closest to the sun about midway through July. So why is winter so cold? It’s because of the Earth’s axis. The axis of Earth is why we have seasons. Imagine there’s a giant disc stretching away from the Sun’s equator and all the planets are within it. This is the Sun’s axis of rotation. The way the Earth is in the disc accounts for our axis. Ours is tilted about 24 degrees away from the Sun’s which is why we experience seasons. Earth is split into four hemispheres: North, south, east, and west. The northern hemisphere con-

tains the North Pole, and the South Pole lies in the southern hemisphere. During the summer months in the northern hemisphere the North Pole faces the sun which means land there receives more sunlight. This sunlight hits the Earth at a steep angle. At this angle the sunlight spreads out less, making the energy hitting any one spot more intense and accounting for why summer is so warm. In the winter the Sun hits the South Pole at a narrower angle, because of this not only does the Northern Hemisphere receive less sun, but the energy is also lessened, making it colder. That is why summer is hot and winter is cold.
