The Defense Department recently launched a comparison calculator for eligible service members to analyze their estimated retirement benefits under the legacy system and the new Blended Retirement System. The tool walks members through five screens, allowing users to adjust 12 data fields and compare benefit scenarios under both systems, Air Force Maj. Michael Odle, the Defense Department’s assistant director of military compensation policy, explained. The calculator is aimed at helping eligible members make the best decision about whether to remain in the current retirement plan, known as the High-3 System, or opt into the Blended Retirement System, which goes into effect Jan. 1, he said. Eligible service members have until December 31, 2018, to enroll in the new system. Military members who enter service on or after January 1 will automatically be enrolled in the BRS. The tool is meant to provide flexibility so members can compare estimated benefits under a variety of situations, Steve Galing, the lead analyst in the Defense Military Personnel Policy Analytical Directorate, said. CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

The arrival of summer closes out another school year and before students, families, and Sailors go their separate ways, there are several distinct groups of graduates who deserve recognition for their outstanding achievements. First, an NSA Naples BRAVO ZULU to our high school graduates whose commencement was yesterday, our elementary school sixth graders who promote next Wednesday, and our Navy College students who graduate next Thursday. You and your families should be very proud of your accomplishments, and I am sure this summer will bring you much deserved leisure and time to reflect on your bright future ahead. Well done! If you are pondering how to spend your free time this summer, there is no shortage of options available through the many support organizations conveniently located on base. In addition to the fantastic lineup of USO and MWR tours, other summer programs include diving, kayaking, archery and swimming lessons. Please remember there are also many volunteer opportunities available and volunteer groups are actively seeking interested personnel to pitch-in and help. Last but not least, be sure to make time for Festa Americana at Carney Park on June 30th and July 1st. It’s a great celebration of our Nation’s birthday put on by MWR – complete with world-class food, top-notch entertainment, and amazing carnival rides that everyone can enjoy. Festa flyers can be found at any MWR facility, and don’t forget to pre-order your commemorative mug. Take advantage of these activities and have a summer to remember. With summer PCS season in high gear and school all but over, more people will be out enjoying outdoor activities and it’s time to renew our commitment to safety. It should go without saying that we all need to slow down on the roads, and ensure we support our designated drivers. Please respect our security forces who protect us and enforce the rules, and remember that everyone is required to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle or a scooter, not just children. Adults, please set a good example for our children. If we watch out for each other and follow the rules, we’ll all be much more able to enjoy the sun-soaked weather that summer provides in Italy. Congratulations again to the exceptionally talented Naples High School class of 2017! Go Wildcats!

Popular and Delicious ‘Cistecca Festival’ Returns to Monte di Procida The “Cistecca Festival” is back in Monte di Procida, Naples with its tasty sandwiches, street food, and international street artists. After last year’s success, the ‘Cistecca Festival’ is back: from June 29 to July 2, Monte di Procida will host one of the most awaited gastronomic events of the year for high-quality sandwich lovers, in a beautiful natural location of more than 3,000 square meters. Organized by the Cistecca Montese consortium, the festival aims to promote the real Cistecca Montese, in which the taste of grilled bread blends with the flavours of beef, scamorza cheese, and the traditional seasonings of the Phlegrean Fields’ tradition. In addition to the Cistecca Montese, you can taste many other Campania street food delicacies, all accompanied by great beer and entertainment for both adults and children, with music and performances by international street artists. Entrance is free, and it is possible to pay for individual dishes inside the exhibition area, or to buy a tasting menu (cistecca, French fries, beer or another drink, and coffee) for only 10 euros. For details visit www.festivaldellacistecca.it Cusano Mutri to Host 13th Flower Festival June 18 The historic town of Cusano Mutri in the province of Benevento, located about 60 kilometers northeast of Naples, will host the 13th edition of its Flower Festival (Infiorata) on June 18. For a century Cusano Mutri has been celebrating the Feast of Catholic Corpus Christi, a liturgical solemnity which emphasizes the joy of the institution of the Eucharist, with the streets covered with flower paintings depicting sacred images, reproduction of famous authors’ works or original proposals of flower masters. The composition of flowers works are made by petals but also sawdust, coffee grounds, seeds and grass. The “Infiorata” takes place in the main streets of the town in the early morning, following sketched drawings on the ground and the complete works is visible for the procession passage of the Corpus Christi around 6 p.m. Italian Prime Minister Unveils New High Speed Train Station at Afragola The new modern-looking high-speed train station at Afragola near Naples was unveiled by Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni on Tuesday. The 60-million euro

project was designed by famed architect Dame Zaha Hadid who passed away in March 2016. The hub will become fully operational on Sunday. Everyday there will be 36 trains that will transit through the Campania hub junction. Eighteen trains will head toward north and the other half will go south. Trains will be connecting Afragola to all the cities served by the high speed system, even Reggio Calabria in the Southern Calabria Italy. The hub will not substitute for the Napoli Centrale station nor inconvenience travelers by stopping in Afragola; but it will serve passengers who were forced to reach Naples when they would have preferred to leave from Afragola and head straight north or south, Maurizio Gentile, Managing Director and General Director of Italian Railway Network, said. Villa Pignatelli Museum Opens ‘Costumes of Stars’ Exhibit The Villa Pignatelli museum in Naples inaugurated “Costumes of Stars,” a special exhibition on Tuesday as part of the 10th Theater Festival. The exhibition pays homage to the most important costume artists in cinema and theater, the Tirelli dressmaking company and its 52 years of activity. A total of 55 original costumes designed by Tirelli will be on display through July 10. The costumes include the ballroom gown in Visconti’s film “Il Gattopardo;” Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder’s costumes for Martin Scorsese’s “The Age of Innocence” and those worn by Kirsten Dunst in Sofia Coppola’s “Maria Antoinette.” Some of the first to commission costumes from Sartoria Tirelli, created in 1964, were Luchino Visconti, Mauro Bolognini, Franco Zeffirelli, Giorgio de Lullo and Giorgio Strehler, and it has ever since been a benchmark for some of the most important costume designers in the world. Naples to Host 2017 Pizza Maker World Cup The City of Naples will host the Pizza Maker World Cup at the “Napoli Pizza Village” June 17 to 25. Entrance is free. Menu prices for the pizza village are 12 or 15 euro and include pizza, drink, ice-cream or cookie and coffee.

HISTORY: BIRTH OF THE HOSPITAL CORPS From Bureau of Medicine and Surgery

On June 17, 1898, President William McKinley signed into law a Congressional bill authorizing the establishment of the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps. Although their name has evolved over the past century from Loblolly Boy to Pharmacists Mate to Hospital Corpsman, the core mission has remained consistent: to minister to the sick and wounded. Known by Marines and Sailors simply as “Doc,” Corpsmen have served everywhere the Navy and Marine Corps have served or fought since the Spanish-American War, and they are often the only medical support immediately available to Sailors and Marines at “the tip of the spear.” Since 2011, Corpsmen receive their basic medical training at Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. Those who serve aboard ships and isolated locations as the sole medical provider, receive additional training as Independent Duty Corpsmen; those who serve with the Marine Corps receive additional training at Field Medical Service School while those who serve with EOD, Dive and SEAL Teams receive additional specialized training. “No Marine has gone into battle without you. No ship or sub has gone underway without you,” former deputy Navy surgeon general and retired Rear Adm. Michael H. Mittelman, said at the 115th anniversary celebration of the Hospital Corps two years ago. “You’re always in the thick of the battle and the main reason we have a 97 percent save rate on the battlefield. Your lineage is one of honor, courage and commitment.” The Hospital Corps, is the only all enlisted corps in the military. It

consists of more than 25,000 active duty and reserve Navy hospital corpsmen, and is the largest and most decorated rating of all branches of the U.S. military. The first member of the Hospital Corps to be awarded the Medal of Honor was Hospital Apprentice Stanley Robert during the Boxer Uprising in China. To date, 22 Hospital Corpsmen have been award the Congressional Medal of Honor (nine of which were award posthumously), and more than 2,000 have been killed in action. In honor of their extraordinary duties, 20 Navy ships have been named after Hospital Corpsmen Famous Hospital Corpsmen include John Bradley, who was with the Marines who raised the flag at Iwo Jima on Mt. Suribachi during World War II; “Lone Survivor” author and Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell; and the 11th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, Joe R. Campa.

Diversity is one of our nation’s greatest strengths. During Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride month, we celebrate our rich diversity and renew our enduring commitment to equality with stories featuring the personal experiences of LGBT members. The dedication and contributions of our Lesbian Gay and Bisexual (LGB) service members and Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) civilians have had immeasurable impact on our National Security and Department of Defense (DoD). This is the second of a series of four stories in which Sailors share their stories about being LGBT. My husband says every time I talk about my childhood, we should break out a box of tissues. I look back now and know I am the person I am because of those experiences. It is the reason I fight so hard. He says my strength of character is how I got through it all. I credit my determination and sense of hope for a better future. My family was blue collar and Southern. My mother and father married in high school, and had three children in a span of four years. Ours was a house where domestic abuse was common. When I was five years old, I saw my father punch my mother so hard, her old-style curlers flew across the room. I used to sleep with the television on to drown out the noises of their fighting. After a while, my mother decided she had taken enough abuse and left my father. After a nasty divorce, she was left to raise three young children on her own. Back in the 70’s, not only were divorced mothers shunned, it was extremely difficult for them to get decent paying jobs. My father abandoned us, and there was no child support or alimony. We survived on the wage my mother was able to draw from her job at a convenience store. She had a boyfriend, for a time, who sexually abused my two sisters. Later, she married a different man, and my new stepfather physically abused me. When he cheated on my mother, she left him and we were on our own again. During this period, I became aware I was different. I struggled with the idea that I was attracted to the same sex. I often contemplated suicide because of the pain of my family in crisis, the stress of my reality and the idea I would never lead a “normal” life. It wasn’t until a handsome young man in high school (who happened to be my first crush) committed suicide that I realized life was too precious to hide my identity. Because of my crush’s suicide, I came out to a friend. It was in a time when it was socially acceptable to chastise and physically assault LGBT. I endured a tremendous amount of verbal and physical harassment. Fortunately, I could defend myself. After more than a few fights spent standing up to bullies, my tormentors decided I wasn’t worth the trouble. I had my first sexual experience in 1984. When my mother learned about it in 1985, she took me straight to a psychiatrist. When that treatment “didn’t work,” she shipped me off to live with my father. The only thing good about living with him was the fact that he lived in a progressive district. I learned about HIV and AIDS. The sex education in school probably saved my life. There was also a peer support group that advocated self-acceptance and peer education. It was then I first volunteered and became a LGBT activist. We marched for equality to include more funding for HIV testing and research, equal access and acceptance. When I turned 19 I joined the Air Force, but lived in constant fear of becoming discovered and persecuted. The constant pressure of living a double life became unbearable. After three years I left the military and returned to being an out and proud gay man! Over the next 20 years, I never shied away from speaking out against injustice, intolerance, bigotry and hate. It is not an easy life. Sometimes I look at the world and ask myself, “Is all this struggle worth it?” I then think about the people who might hear my message: One person who would decide against suicide; One person who hears my story and accepts themself; One person who displays empathy and respect toward a person who is different from themself; One person who will benefit from all the pain, sweat, and tears I have suffered and will not have to go through the same issues for being different. I answer my own question, “Yes, I believe all the struggle is worth it.”

Italian Designers Feature Work at NEX Fashion Show By MC1 Daniel Barker

The NSA Naples Navy Exchange hosted a special fashion show at the Gricignano, Support Site location June 3. The fashion show, by Forward Footwear and Boutique, featured Italian clothing, jewelry, shoes and accessories available through the NEX. “We wanted to be able to share some of the Italian culture and we put this event together to show a little of what is available,” Enzo De Simeone, Navy Exchange (NEX) fashion show coordinator, said. “We had runway set up in the food court area, complete with a sound system and lights, with a couple of gazebos acting as changing rooms.” Some of the designers featured on the runway included Romanelli, Sorelle Duraccio, Nunzio Russo, Papillover, Del Pezzo, Malva, Massimo Lucisano, Gattinoni and others. According to Chloe Seok, a runway model for the event, the show was a way interact with Italian stylists, art directors and models in addition participating for fun.

“It was a good event and a good experience,” Seok said. “Both on stage and behind the scenes, it was a learning environment where I was able to work with other models and observe the atmosphere and work attitude of everyone involved. At any event with many moving parts there are challenges but everyone adapted to changes quickly and professionally. Fashion has a glamorous side but it can also be quite chaotic, especially backstage.” For one of the American models, participating alongside Italian models and directors was part of what made the NEX fashion show unique. “All the girls were really nice, there were some cultural differences but I liked how it all came together in the end,” fashion model Lovely Frantz said. “We communicated with the art directors and stylists with a lot of hand motions and body language, everyone was really helpful and patient.” The next big event will be the Festa Americana June 30 and July 1 in Carney Park. BOTTLED WATER ADVISORY From NSA Public Affairs

Except for those living at the Support Site and Capodichino, bottled water is recommended. Treated water is provided free of charge at a dispenser located outside the Capodichino east parking garage. All economy leases negotiated through the Housing office have a bottle water clause, which requires the landlord to provide bottled water. Work with landlords to have any water holding tanks disinfected twice a year, and ensure your tap water is disconnected from non-permitted wells and connected only to the city water system.

ENERGY CONSERVATION Water Conservation – Numbers Don’t Lie From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Water is a crucial necessity for living organisms regardless of the species. It is available in large quantities but only a small percentage is consumable. Because it is rare, water conservation is essential to our survival. Water conservation does not seem to get as much publicity as energy conservation but the two sources tie in together and are as equally important. Water pumping, delivery and waste water treatment facilities consume a significant amount of energy. In some regions of the world over 15 percent of total electricity consumption is devoted to water management. Reality Check ● 70 percent of the world’s surface is covered by water. ● 97.5 percent of the world’s water is salt water. ● 2.5 percent of the world’s water is freshwater. ● Almost 68.7 percent of the world’s water is frozen in ice caps and glaciers. ● Only 1 percent of the total water resources on earth are available for human use. Water Conservation Tips ● Most authorities recommend that people drink eight, eightounce glasses of water each day, which is a total of 64 ounces of water per day (.5 gallon). At 365 days per year, that would be equivalent to 23,360 ounces or 182.5 gallons of water per year. ● Repair leaky faucets promptly. One faucet leaking one drop per second, can waste 2,400 gallons of water in just one year. That’s equivalent to 13 years of drinking water for one person. ● Install low-flow shower heads, toilets and aerators on kitchen and bathroom sink faucets to save water. They will cut water usage by as much as 280 gallons a month for a typical family of four. ● Shorten your showers. Each minute less you run the shower you could save 2.5 to 5 gallons each time you shower, depending on the type of showerhead you have. ● Don’t leave the water running when brushing your teeth. You could save as much as 9 gallons of water every time you brush. ● Repair “silent leaks” in the toilet. If food coloring put in the tank ends up in the bowl without flushing, it leaks. Repairing the leak will save up to 200 gallons of water a day.

SOUND OFF: WHAT DO YOU DO TO SAVE MONEY?

MC2 Jonathan Nelson

YN1 Christopher Slowey

MC3 Krystina Coffey

AG3 Kyle Weis

CTR2 Thomas Deleon

“I went to Navy Federal and talked to their free financial specialists to develop a budget for myself and a plan to pay off debt.”

“I save money by being paid as an E-6, but living as an E-5.”

“I try to limit going out on the weekends and I also try to prepare my meals at home as much as possible instead of going out to eat.”

MCPON Releases New CPO 365 Guidance By Chief Mass Communication Specialist Kurt M. Riggs Office of the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Public Affairs

Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Steven S. Giordano released the CPO 365 Guidance May 30 for fiscal year 2018. CPO 365 is a year-long program designed to ensure the CPO Mess and First Class Petty Officers are continually and steadily developing to succeed in future leadership positions and affords command leadership the flexibility to conduct education and training in alignment with the Navy Ethos and Navy Core Values of honor, courage and commitment. Giordano is keen on highlighting three core principles of being a confidently humble leader. Everywhere he goes he reminds Sailors to be authentic, competent and courageous, both personally and professionally, in

every aspect of their life. “By speaking from our own learned experiences and using history to reinforce our steely grit as a Navy, we gain a deeper trust from those we lead,” Giordano said. “We understand the decisions we make require us to be risk takers and that it takes courage to lead from the front with conviction.” Giordano said the guidance for this year incorporates feedback from the fleet received during his travels and brought to him by the CPO community through the fleets. Since becoming the master chief petty officer of the Navy Sept. 2, 2016, Giordano has traveled to Norfolk, San Diego, Key West, Hawaii, Millington, Bahrain, Afghanistan, Djibouti, the Pacific Northwest, the United

Kingdom, Spain, Italy and Greece speaking with Sailors in every community at every level. “I’ve been traveling the fleet quite a bit for the past nine months, asking Sailors what they want out of this program,” Giordano said. “I think the results of that input are well incorporated into this year’s guidance.” This summer he is scheduled to visit 7th Fleet accomplishing his goal of touching each Navy area of responsibility within the first year since assuming office. He has spoken with Sailors from 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 10th fleet, various Flag officers and members of Congress and attended several formal Navy events and spoken at dozens of all hands calls, all while maintaining a home, being a husband and a father.

“Authentic people know who they are, they speak from their own experiences and know how to define these things,” Giordano said. “At the end of the day, no words on paper are truly going to be able to have Sailors understand authenticity, competence and courageousness until you get up and have a conversation with them, face to face, eye to eye and they can look at you and understand where you are coming from.” The Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy is the senior enlisted person in the Navy and serves as the senior enlisted leader of the Navy, an advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations and to the Chief of Naval Personnel in matters dealing with enlisted personnel and their families. Giordano is the 14th MCPON. More information on the CPO 365 guidance can be found on the MCPON’s page at www.navy.mil/mcpon/index.asp.

NATO IN ROMANIA From page 1 “Any opportunity that we get to train with our multinational partners, and especially other members of NATO, is a great opportunity for us,” U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Adam Sprinkle, an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter pilot assigned to the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade from Ansbach, Germany, said. “Every country operates a little bit differently and building the rapport and the working relationship is an invaluable training point.” Training conducted to date includes everything from basic infantry and armor movements to

medical evacuation as well as complex air assault missions. Another week’s worth of Force Integration Training (FIT) will follow before Noble Jump concludes with an impressive combined arms manoeuvre live fire exercise June 14. Designed to test the core ele-

BLENDED RETIREMENT From page 1 Members are advised to consult with a financial professional, he said. “This is a personal decision,” he added. “There are a lot of various resources available to our members, but ultimately it is up to the member.” DoD-Endorsed Calculator The calculator is a comprehensive tool designed to take into account the unique financial situations of all who serve – active duty, National Guard members and reservists, Odle said, and it’s designed to be used in conjunction with the mandatory BRS opt-in course. This comparison calculator is the only comparison tool endorsed by DoD, he added. The opt-in BRS course is available with a common access card through Joint Knowledge Online or through a service’s learning management system. Military OneSource offers the course without a CAC. Military OneSource is hosting a Blended Retirement System question-and-answer session June 8 at 1 p.m. EDT on its Facebook page. Additionally, an optional training course for the calculator will be available in the next weeks, Odle said.

ments of NATO’s Readiness Action Plan (RAP), Noble Jump is putting the VJTF(L) through its paces by rapidly deploying it to an assigned area of operations. The VJTF(L) have deployed from bases in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Norway and Albania and have been reinforced by approximately 2,000 Romanian troops and more than 1,000 enablers. Arriving by various combinations of air, sea, rail and road, NATO Allies are providing tangible proof that the Alliance is able to deliver a rapid deterrent response to any situation that threatens it.

Exploring Options Under Calculator An information box will pop up when users hover over underlined text in the calculator, providing further information on that topic, Odle explained. Further information is available through the links in the “more info” section under each page of the calculator. After a user inputs all the information, the calculator will generate a results page. Service members are encouraged to go through the process several times to see how their projected benefits change under various situations, Odle said. The comparison calculator does not take into account optional Thrift Savings Plan service member contributions under the legacy plan, and it does not account for optional monthly automatic Treasury Direct Government Savings Bonds purchased under the legacy retirement plan, he explained. All currently serving members are grandfathered under their legacy retirement plans. Active component service members with fewer than 12 years of service as of December 31, 2017, and reservists in a pay status with fewer than 4,320 retirement points as of December 31, 2017, are covered under the existing system, but are eligible to opt into the Blended Retirement System.

Forced out of his mansion and desperate for a place to stay, he must move in with his estranged sister, Sara, and her nerdy but adorable son, Hugo in their small apartment. Anxious to return to the lap of luxury, Maximo uses his nephew’s crush on a classmate to get to his new target-her grandmother, Celeste, a widowed billionaire. As Maximo tries to rekindle his powers as a Latin lover, he finds himself bonding with his nephew Hugo, and he begins to learn that being a Latin lover means that loving money isn’t as important as the love of your family. King Arthur Legend of the Sword PG-13, Action-Adventure-Drama, 126 min. Cast: Charlie Hunnam, Astrid Bergs-Frisbey, Djimon Hounsou, Aidan Gillen and Jude Law. When the child, Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern, Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys

Cast: Melissa Benoist, Eva Longoria, Theo Rossi, Tony Revolori and Demin Bichir. Megan Leavey Premiere PG-13, Drama, 116 min. Cast: Kate Mara, Tom Felton, Bradley Whitford and Edie Falco. Megan Leavey is based on the true life story of a young marine corporal whose unique discipline and bond with her military combat dog saved many lives during their deployment in Iraq. When she is assigned to clean up the K9 unit after a disciplinary hearing, Leavey identifies with a particularly aggressive dog, Rex, and is given the chance to train him. Over the course of their service, Megan and Rex completed more than 100 missions until an IED explosion injures them, putting their fate in jeopardy. The Mummy Premiere PG-13, Action-Adventure, 110 min. Cast: Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Russell Crowe and Jake Johnson. Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy. Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales PG-13, Action-Adventure, 135 min. Cast: Johnny Depp, Kaya Scodelario, Orlando Bloom, Brenton Thwaites and Javier Bardem. The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea – notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth, a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry, a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.

The Promise Last Showing PG-13, Drama, 133 min. Cast: Oscar Isaac, Christian Bale, Charlotte Le Bon, Jean Reno and James Cromwell. It is 1914. As the Great War looms, the mighty Ottoman Empire is crumbling. Constantinople, the once vibrant, multicultural capital on the shores of the Bosporus, is about to be consumed by chaos. Michael Boghosian, arrives in the cosmopolitan hub as a medical student determined to bring modern medicine back to Siroun, his ancestral village in Southern Turkey where Turkish Muslims and Armenian Christians have lived side by side for centuries. Photo-journalist Chris Myers, has come here only partly to cover geo-politics. He is mesmerized by his love for Ana, an Armenian artist he has accompanied from Paris after the sudden death of her father. When Michael meets Ana, their shared Armenian heritage sparks an attraction that explodes into a romantic rivalry between the two men. As the Turks form an alliance with Germany and the Empire turns violently against its own ethnic minorities, their conflicting passions must be deferred while they join forces to survive even as events threaten to overwhelm them. Snatched Premiere R, Comedy, 91 min. Cast: Amy Schumer, Goldie Hawn, Joan Cusack, Ike Barinholtz and Wanda Sykes. After her boyfriend dumps her on the eve of their exotic vacation, impetuous dreamer Emily Middleton persuades her ultra-cautious mother, Linda to travel with her to paradise. Unforgettable Last Showing R, Drama, 100 min. Cast: Katherine Heigl, Rosario Dawson, Geoff Stults, Isabella Rice and Simon Kassianides. Tessa Connover is barely coping with the end of her marriage when her ex-husband, David, becomes happily engaged to Julia Banks – not only bringing Julia into the home they once shared but also into the life of their daughter, Lilly. Trying to settle into her new role as a wife and a stepmother, Julia believes she has finally met the man of her dreams, the man who can help her put her own troubled past behind her. But Tessa’s jealousy soon takes a pathological turn until she will stop at nothing to turn Julia’s dream into her ultimate nightmare. Wonder Woman PG-13, Action-Adventure, 141 min. Cast: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright and David Thewlis. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Path of the Gods: Adventure of a Lifetime By Joe Luthy

The Amalfi Coast is one of the more dramatic views in the world of where water meets land. Some prefer to experience the coast by driving along its windy road while others prefer to gaze upon it while cruising in a boat. The more adventurous take a different route by lacing up their boots and hiking the world-famous “Path of the Gods.” Located about an hour-and-ahalf from Support Site, Path of the Gods offers breath-taking panoramic views of Campania’s Amalfi Coast, stretching from Bomerano to Nocelle, a hamlet above Positano. The path, which is known in Italian as “Sentiero Degli Dei” is still used by trail horses, farmers, goat herders, hunters and others as they make their way through the mountains in between the towns. Many homes, which are literally dug into the rocky mountainside, have terraced gardens and vineyards along the trail. This 7.8 kilometer (4.8 mile) trail is comprised of numerous rises and falls of 15-20 feet, and is rated as “moderate,” but is definitely not for the

faint of heart, especially when you look over the stunning vista and realize you are standing on a rocky cliff some 500 meters (1,500 feet) above sea level. You don’t need to be an avid rock climber, but should be able endure steps and intense walking for 3-4 hours. The trail is at its busiest in the spring and fall, with activity drastically declining as the summer heat forces even the most adventurous from the trail. Wear comfortable shoes or hiking boots, hat, and be sure to bring a camera, a snack bar or two and lots of water and sunscreen. It’s well marked with white and red stripes of paint and 15 number markers to let you know you are still on path, as well as where you’re at along it. Any time you see a split in the trail, just look for one of the trail markers painted on some rocks and continue

trekking in that direction. Absolutely the best way to experience The Path of the Gods is to sign up with a tour hosted by the USO. The USO offers group tours along the Path of Gods, including transportation. The tour guide introduces guests to the path at the trailhead and leads them through most of the trail while pointing out interesting sites and explaining a bit about the area and its history, then down quite a few stairs, and to the coach where it awaits guests at the end of their excursion. By the time hikers return to the coach, they have walked nearly 7 kilometers and are ready to spend their return trip to base by taking a well-earned nap. To adventure along the Path of Gods with the USO, mark your calendars for July 23 and call DSN 626-5713 or Comm. 081-568-5713 to reserve your seats. The “Path of the Gods” offers breathtaking panoramic views of Campania’s Amalfi Coast. If you are an adventurer at heart, lace up your boots grab your camera and experience one the world’s great hiking trails. Photo by Joe Luthy

A Cultural Exchange with a Middle School in Aversa By Victoria Delarosa

Last month some Naples Middle High School (NMHS) students visited Domenico Cimarosa, a middle school in nearby Aversa. The trip was organized by Roberta Pennasilico, our Italian teacher at NMHS, along with her counterpart, Daniella Pelosi, from the Italian public middle school. From our first step off the bus, we were heartily greeted by the Italian students, while the Italian choir students performed a breathtaking presentation of the Italian National Anthem. After that all of the American students were warmly greeted by Mario Autore, the Italian public middle school principal. We were then split up into groups and escorted to various classrooms. The students had set up a presentation about the local history and background of Aversa. After meeting some of the Italians and getting to know them, we went to the gym where the

Italian orchestra, along with NMHS band, under the direction of Scott Morris, performed some pop songs and finished up with “Nessun Dorma,” the famous aria from Puccini’s opera “Turandot.” We then split up into pairs and joined an Italian family for lunch at their homes. All the mothers prepared lavious and delicious Italian meals for all of the students. My friend and I were overwhelmed: They gave us lasagna, chicken, potatoes, pizzetta, strawberries, bananas and ice cream. The food was really yummy. After lunch, we talked to the family and got to know them very well. We eventually lunch we returned to Domenico Cimarosa and played several rounds of volleyball. It was a very fun and friendly game. Sadly, we had to go back home but I will never forget that day and I hope to have another chance go back soon and spend time with our fellow classmates and our new Italian friends.
