President Offers Condolences to Orlando Victims

Following a June 14, 2016, meeting with his National Security Council, President Barack Obama today offered condolences to those affected by the June 12 shooting that killed 49 people at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

“The American people and our allies and friends all over the world stand with you and are thinking about you and are praying for you,” Obama said during a news conference at the Treasury Department here. The NSC meeting was focused on cutting off the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s revenue sources.

The shooter, identified as 29year-old Omar Mateen from Fort Pierce, Florida, had accessed “extremist information and propaganda over the internet,” Obama said.

Mateen was killed during a confrontation with police.

Fifty-three people were injured in the shooting. Among those killed was Army Reserve Capt.

Antonio Devon Brown, Navy Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters today. “We express our condolences to his family and to all the families and loved ones of the victims," he added.

Those who joined the president on the podium included Joint Chiefs Chairman Marine Corps Gen. Joe Dunford, FBI Director James Comey, Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. Defense Secretary Ash Carter, who is in Brussels for meetings with NATO defense ministers, participated in the NSC meeting via teleconference.

NOSC Awards $40,000 From Naples Overseas Support Club

The Naples Overseas Support Club (NOSC) awarded 15 individuals within the Naples military community a total of $40,000 in scholarship funds June 1, 2016.

NOSC is a nonprofit command-recognized charitable and social organization working for the benefit of the American military and civilian community in Naples. NOSC offers the community an abundance of charitable programs funded primarily by the NOSC Thrift Store.

We engage our members with special events and encourage them to become an integral part of our mission through volunteering. NOSC also hosts, promotes and partners with our Naval Support Activity (NSA) organizations to bring our members community events and get-togethers, enrichment classes and travel opportunities.

This year NOSC continued to extend its reach beyond the high school senior’s “Scholarship A” and offered a second “Scholarship B” for anyone seeking higher education, for which three individuals received scholarships. This second scholarship option caters to those who are returning to school or who are considered “non-traditional” students.

The funds for these scholarships are primarily generated from items the community has donated to the NOSC Thrift Store and through the sale of our book, Shopping on the Boot. This is a resource guide published by NOSC with information on shopping, dining and traveling in Naples and the surrounding areas.

It was a highly competitive application season and we applaud all who applied. NOSC is pleased to award these funds to help supplement students in their quest for higher learning.

Stolen Marble Head of Rome’s First Emperor Returned to Italy A marble sculpture of the head of Augustus, the Rome’s first emperor was returned to Italy after being illegally smuggled abroad about 40 years ago.

The 45 centimeter head of Augustus is one of the earliest known depictions of a man born more than 2,000 years ago and it is the latest artifact recovered by a police unit dedicated to tracking down artwork from all over the world.

The head was displayed in a museum in Brussels. The museum had bought the sculpture in good faith from a private collector, and as soon as art history experts established that it was stolen from the Nepi museum, near Rome in the 1970s, the museum returned it to Italy immediately. At a ceremony to mark the return of the artwork Deputy Foreign Minister Mario Giro stated the importance the memories of these artifacts have for the future of humanity.

Italy’s Osteria Francescana Crowned World’s Best Restaurant Italy’s “Osteria Francescana” in Modena was crowned world’s best restaurant of 2016 at a ceremony in New York on Monday. Chef Massimo Bottura opened his restaurant 21 years ago and he focused on traditionally dishes from the Emilia Romagna region, but also for his twists on traditional ingredients with an innovative and contemporary recipes. The Italian chef, whose world-famous restaurant in Modena came in at number three in 2013 and 2014, was emotional in accepting his award.

Pisa University to Train Italy’s First Climatologists In Italy there are no degree courses in climatology, however, Pisa University is to become the first Italian university to train climatologists. From the next academic year 2016-17, the university will train experts to predict medium-tolong-term climate trends by analyzing past data thanks to disciplines such as ‘paleoclimatology.’

NAVY HISTORY: HOSPITAL CORPS BIRTH

On June 17, 1898, President William McKinley signed into law a Congressional bill authorizing the establishment of the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps.

Although their name has evolved over the past century from Loblolly Boy to Pharmacists Mate to Hospital Corpsman, the core mission has remained consistent: to minister to the sick and wounded.

Known by Marines and Sailors simply as “Doc,” Corpsmen have served everywhere the Navy and Marine Corps have served or fought since the Spanish-American War, and they are often the only medical support immediately available to Sailors and Marines at “the tip of the spear.”

Since 2011, Corpsmen

receive their basic medical training at Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.

Those who serve aboard ships and isolated locations as the sole medical provider, receive additional training as Independent Duty Corpsmen; those who serve with the Marine Corps receive additional training at Field Medical Service School while those who serve with EOD, Dive and SEAL Teams receive additional specialized training.

Rear Adm. Michael H. Mittelman, said at the 115th anniversary celebration of the Hospital Corps two years ago. “You’re always in the thick of the battle and the main reason we have a 97 percent save rate on the battlefield. Your lineage is one of honor, courage and commitment.”

The Hospital Corps, is the only all enlisted corps in the military. It consists of more than 25,000 active duty and reserve Navy hospital corpsmen, and is the largest and most decorated rating of all branches of the U.S. military.

The first member of the Hospital Corps to be awarded the Medal of Honor was ospital Apprentice Stanley Robert during the Boxer Uprising in China. To date, 22 Hospital Corpsmen have been award the Congressional Medal of Honor (nine of which were award posthumously), and more than 2,000 have been killed in action. In honor of their extraordinary duties, 20 Navy ships have been named after Hospital Corpsmen.

Famous Hospital Corpsmen include John Bradley, who was with the Marines who raised the flag at Iwo Jima on Mt. Suribachi during World War II; Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell; and the 11th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, Joe R. Campa.

SPOTLIGHT: HM3 Aikkiko Nickler

Hailing from New Haven, Connecticut, Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Aikkiko Nickler reported to U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Naples in October 2015. Nickler works as a General Duty Corpsman in the Plans, Operations, and Medical Intelligence/Operations Management Division of the Human Resources Department.

Nickler is mentoring her peers and junior Sailors by having them become a part of the USNH Naples Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) Chapter.

As president of the local CSADD, Nickler has worked hard with her fellow Sailors to improve the CSADD Chapter at the Naval Hospital; starting with a recent private organization approval from the installation.“The progress the group members have made since I joined in October, and their desire, dedication, and willingness to help other Sailors makes me proud to belong to this group,” Nickler said.

The organization is working on creating new volunteer events and command activities to give Sailors more opportunities for getting involved.

Although not currently assigned in a patient care setting, Nickler strives to pick up Petty Officer Second Class and further hopes to attend Independent Duty Corpsman “C” School. This would be utilized as a stepping stone to further her career goals as a Behavioral Health Physician Assistant. In her spare time, Nickler enjoys paddle boarding, painting, traveling, reading, volunteering, going on new adventures and trying new things.

Summer’s here and the USO’s Summerfest 2016 welcomed it with style.

More than 400 people from the NSA Naples community attended the free “All-American” themed event on June 11 that featured an American pie bake off, a patriotic pet parade, a live performance from the Naval Forces Europe Top Side Brass Band, and a free trip give away to Edelweiss Lodge and Resort.

Summerfest is an annual event the USO hosts that’s designed to kick off the summer fun.

“It’s a way for the families to come out and enjoy the first big event at the Central Park Area,” Sabrina

Pullido, USO Naples and Rome area director, said “They’re able to bring out their picnic baskets and chairs so everyone is able to get in the groove of summer festivities.”

Pullido has been at the Naples USO for more than 15 years and knows the importance of community events; especially those that remind service members of home.

“One of the things people miss the most is that feeling of being in their home towns and those festivities their use to,” Pullido said. “There might be some local Italian festivities but it’s great to have something with an AllAmerican flavor.”

But, not only is the USO trying to give the NSA

Naples community a piece of home, they’re also showing their appreciation.

“For the USO, this is our big appreciation event,” Pullido said. “All the events the USO hosts is a reminder of America’s appreciation and a way to show service members and their families that there’s a very grateful country back home.”

More than 35 volunteers helped plan and execute the event including collaboration with MWR. Other base organizations involved were the Naples Overseas Support Club, AFN Naples, American Red Cross Naples, UMUC Europe, Navy College, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society and Navy Federal Credit Union.

The Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA) Region is sponsoring a competition called Energy Biggest Loser. Installations, region wide, will compete for the grand prize of $70,000 to be awarded in support base projects. The second and third place winners will be awarded $50,000 and $30,000 respectively.

The grand prize winner will be the installation with the greatest decrease in energy consumption for the month of July.

The competition will run from July 1 to 31. Electrical readings will be taken weekly using the electric metering systems, and the readings will be made available to the public via articles in the energy corner of Panorama, NSA PAO notes and on the NSA Naples Energy Savings Facebook page. At the end of the competition period, the winning installations will be chosen based on the greatest percent reduction in electrical consumption.

The winning installation will be announced in August.

This year, installation occupants are offered an opportunity to support energy conservation awareness efforts. In addition to the reduction competition, there is also a poster and video competition. The winning video and poster for the installation will compete with the products created region wide for the best design. The winning poster and video will be announced in July.

Naples High School Seniors Celebrate Graduation Seventy-two seniors from Naples High School toss their hats high into the air at an observation platform at the Italian Air Force Academy (Accademia Aeronautica), which overlooks the Bay of Pozzuoli, to celebrate their recent graduation. Approximately 75 percent of them plan to attend college, and about 15 percent plan on enlisting in the military. The rest will remain with their families in Italy or will take a year off to travel and explore the world. On average, of the 300-some students who attend the high school, they will be here for only two or three years before moving on to another duty station with their military family.

Obama said the meeting was part of his administration’s regular effort to review and intensify the campaign to destroy ISIL. “I want to remind them that they are not alone,” the president said of the people of Orlando.

Counter-ISIL Meeting During the NSC meeting, Carter and Dunford reviewed the military campaign against ISIL, Obama said, adding that the mission to destroy the terrorist group continues to be a difficult fight, but one that is making significant progress.

“Over the past two months, I've authorized a series of steps to ratchet up our fight against ISIL,” the president said. These include adding more U.S. personnel, including special operations forces in Syria to help local forces battling ISIL there, more advisors to work more closely with Iraqi security forces, and other assets such as attack helicopters and more support for local forces in northern Iraq, he said.

“Our aircraft continue to launch from the USS Harry Truman, now in the Mediterranean. Our B-52 bombers are hitting ISIL with precision strikes. Targets are being identified and hit even more quickly,” Obama said. So far, he added, 13,000 airstrikes have been launched against ISIL. ISIL’s Experiencing Pressure The counter-ISIL campaign is firing on all cylinders, “and as a result, ISIL is under more pressure than ever before. ISIL continues to lose key leaders,” the president said.

He added, “This includes Salman Abu Shabib, the senior military leader in Mosul … who plotted external attacks; Shaker Wahib, ISIL's military leader in Iraq's Anbar province; and Maher al-Bilawi, the top ISIL commander in Fallujah.”

The coalition has killed more than 120 top ISIL leaders and commanders, and ISIL continues to lose ground in Iraq, Obama said. In the past two months, he said, local forces in Iraq with coalition support have liberated the western town of Rutbah and moved up the Euphrates River Valley, liberating the strategic town of Hit and breaking the ISIL siege of Haditha.

“Iraqis forces have surrounded Fallujah and begun to move into the city … In the north, Iraqi forces continue to push up the Tigris River Valley … and now [are] preparing to tighten the noose around ISIL in Mosul,” Obama said.

In Syria, helped by U.S. Special Forces, the coalition of local forces is tightening the noose around ISIL in Raqqa, he added.

Reducing ISIL’s Revenue Stream “In short,” Obama said, “our coalition continues to be on offense. ISIL is on defense and it has now been a full year since ISIL has been able to mount a major successful offensive operation on either Syria or Iraq.”

As a result of strikes against ISIL’s oil infrastructure and supply lines, its revenue from oil is down by millions of dollars per month, and the coalition’s destruction of storage sites for its cash, ISIL is deprived of many millions more, the president said.

“ISIL's cash reserves are down; it has had to cut salaries for its fighters, [and] it's resorting to more extortion of those trapped in its grip. And

by ISIL's own admission, some of its own leaders have been caught stealing cash and gold. Once again, ISIL's true nature has been revealed.

These are not religious warriors. They are thugs, and they are thieves,” Obama said.

The terrorist group’s ranks and morale also are shrinking, he said.

“As one defector said, ISIL is not bringing Islam to the world, and people need to know that,” he added.

Stemming Foreign Fighter Flow International efforts have made it possible to stem the flow of foreign fighters, Obama said.

The U.S. intelligence community, he added, now assesses that the ranks of ISIL fighters have been reduced to the lowest levels in more than two and a half years.

The coalition also is addressing factors that have allowed the terrorists to gain traction in parts of the world, Obama said.

In Iraq, he said, this means helping Iraqis stabilize liberated communities and promote inclusive governance so ISIL can’t return. In Syria, it means continued support for the fragile cessation of hostilities there. ISIL, and al-Nusra – alQaida's affiliate in Syria – also continue to terrorize Syrians, the president said.

Beyond Syria and Iraq, ISIL is also losing ground in Libya, he added.

“Forces of the Libyan Unity Government are going after ISIL in their stronghold in Sirte, and we'll continue to assist the new Libyan government as it works to secure its country,” Obama said.

Summer Fun Has Begun

School is out, pools are open, there’s nothing to watch on TV, and the kids are getting restless. That makes it official: Summer is here, and if you weren’t aware, there really is a lot to see and do.

I’d like to point out a few of the activities coming up in the next couple of weeks that can keep the kids occupied: You can enjoy a true Neapolitan pizza served piping hot out of a real pizza oven in our own backyard at Support Site’s Central Park at the Pizza Fest Safety Day/Pompieropoli on June 25.

You and your family can also celebrate the Fourth of July along with the 50th Anniversary of Carney Park by attending outdoor concerts by Tori Kelly at Carney Park on July 1, along with the Queen Tribute Band and IMove. The Navy Band and the Kelly Bell Band will be performing at Central Park on July 4.

Kelly, an innovative home-grown pop and R&B artist from California, is Billboard’s Women in Music Breakthrough Artist for 2015 and Radio Disney Music Awards Breakout Artist of the Year for 2016. Her hit Nobody Love from her debut album Unbreakable Smile made Billboard’s Hot 100 this past year. Queen Tribute Band and I-Move are local bands that will be bringing both old and new favorite tunes to the stage. And, the Kelly Bell Band is a well-known funkadelic

R&B band from the Mid-Atlantic region.

We haven’t had a ferris wheel here in the five years I’ve been here, but this year, it will be at both Carney Park and Support Site to help us celebrate the Fourth of July.

Just imagine what a great ride and unique view riders will enjoy from the top of the “big wheel.”

LANDSCAPE OF MEMORY The aim of this initiative is to see, placed side by side in a collective exhibition, affirmed artists, children, kids and simple fans, in order to show how the landscapes of the origins are or were especially how Campania’s landscapes are interpreted and represented by different expressive and artistic models. The person responsible of the project is the artist Domenico Severino to whom the works have to be addressed, It is not a contest nor a competition. Anyone can participate from adults to school students and children too. The initiative provides the realization of theme postcards The postcards will have to be realized according to the following modalities: • Free support and techniques.

• The highest size 21 x 30 centimeters • The topic is Landscape of memory.

There will be no jury, no taxes for the participation, neither restitution. The material has to be sent via traditional mai.l No critical discriminations are allowed and no sales of material.
