Service members are no stranger to hardship and sacrifice. American military members choose to serve their country and in doing so give up many of the things that make life comfortable and stable … but what about their family members? As military families overseas, we have all experienced the separation, confusion and disorientation that come with moving to a new country. Besides the language barrier, which is difficult enough, we deal with the loss of our support systems while we make new friends and begin to familiarize ourselves with our new surroundings. Many of us have heard the expression “military family.” What is a military family really? It is a group of strangers that come together to encourage and support each other because we are all in the same boat … if not literally, then figuratively. But as we all know, meeting people takes time. Who can we turn to when we don’t know anyone? To top it off, service members can deploy often which leaves families and spouses alone to deal with the stress of moving to a new place. In the old Navy, there was a well-known saying “You weren’t issued a family with your sea bag.” Since then – thankfully – the Navy has made huge strides in recognizing the importance of a happy home life for their sailors, which inevitably means that their family’s well being is just as important as their own.

Wildcats Volleyball Teams Place at European Championships By Brenda Dye

Ladies Win Third Place The Lady Wildcats traveled 27 hours, by bus, to Ramstein, Germany, to compete in the European Volleyball Championships last week, and they didn’t leave emptyhanded. Ever since Naples High School was moved up to Division I in 2014, they continually prove that even though they are one of the smallest schools in the division, they are tough competitors who won’t go down without a fight. New rules during pool-play made it difficult to calculate exactly which teams would advance into the semi-finals until all the games were finished on Friday afternoon. Naples advanced and faced the undefeated Stuttgart Panthers in the semi-finals Friday night. In a game where the winner takes the best three out of five sets, the Wildcats were the definite underdogs, and they surprised the Panthers when they beat them in the second set. Naples lost the next two sets and Stuttgart advanced to the finals against Ramstein, while Naples faced Laken-

heath on Saturday for third place. The Wildcats beat the Lancers and finished as the Division I third place winners, while Ramstein placed second and Stuttgart took home first place. Sophomore Natalia Woznicki was one of eight players selected for the All-Tournament Team and senior Sierra Dye was selected for the All-Star Team. “Coach Julia and I are so proud of these girls with how they have played on the court this year, as well as how they have developed to become strong young women,” Coach Kenny Byler said. ”They continuously demonstrated to us a fierce determination to play their best in the midst of difficult circumstances and show us success, not only in the win column, but in their personal development as well. These young ladies are truly champions at heart and we are proud of how they will contribute to their school and community this year.” Men Win Second Place The undefeated Wildcats Men’s Volleyball team had a shorter drive than the girls team in their journey to Vicenza to

compete against eight other teams for the European Championship. After beating Sigonella in the semi-finals, the Wildcats battled Marymount International School of Rome (MMI) for the championship. After four action-packed sets, Naples lost to MMI and finished as the second place winners. Senior Andrew Elliott-Smith and junior Austin McKamey were both given All-Tournament and All-Region honors, and McKamey was also named the All-Tournament Most Valuable Player. “This has been one of the best Volleyball seasons I have ever had the honor of coaching. This team has worked, sweated and given their whole hearts to their success and, in return, they have become more than athletes on a court, but brothers and family,” Coach Amber BoldenowPacheco said. “Not only have they have received the respect of their competing teams and coaches for their volleyball skills and their ability to rise to a challenge, their honorable behavior on and off the court has earned them special recognition by officials, as well. They were undefeated all season and won second place in the Tournament, but it feels like first. One game does not change the fact that the Naples Men’s Wildcats are the best team in Europe!” CAPTAIN’S CORNER. . . . . . . . . 2

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

Congratulations to PresidentElect Donald Trump. With the Presidential Election now past and opening, we find ourselves speeding toward the holiday season. This weekend we celebrate Veterans Day with a long weekend for some, and then quickly follow that with Thanksgiving in a few short weeks. These are great opportunities to spend time with friends and family, visit historic locations in Italy, or to just take a break from the hard work our community does on a daily basis. For those who cannot be with family during the holiday season, the USO and MWR offices are working hard to put together fun and worthwhile events, to include a Thanksgiving luncheon on November 22, a Thanksgiving dinner also on November 22, and a Thanksgiving themed BINGO night on November 20. Take advantage of these opportunities to get out and enjoy some quality time with your shipmates, celebrate, and connect to the community. While on the subject of the holidays; it can be a difficult time to be stationed away from home and familiar places. If you start to feel down, please reach out to our first-rate community resources such as the Fleet and Family Support Center, our Command Chaplains, your friends and shipmates, or anyone from our excellent medical staff at the NSA Naples Hospital. Getting you the help you need to get through difficult times is a priority. This year the Navy launched its new Sailor Assistance and Intercept for Life program aimed at supplementing existing medical treatment by providing continual support through the first 90 days after suicide-related behavior. The program is designed to provide rapid assistance, on-going risk assessment and support for Sailors who have exhibited risky behaviors and was inspired by the Marine Intercept Program (MIP). It is in all of our interests to remain sensitive to any changes in your friends, family members and co-workers moods and do not be afraid to reach out for help. On November 17 our emergency management and training teams will conduct an earthquake exercise designed to familiarize our community with the procedures and precautions to take in the event of an earthquake. There have been a number of recent seismic events in the area bringing attention to the fact that Naples is located in a region with high levels of geologic activity. Take this opportunity on November 17 to discuss emergency procedures at your office and with your family; and also check that you have everything you need in your emergency preparedness kit. You can check www.readynavy.mil for the latest updates, because we never know exactly when we’ll need to spring in to action, but we should always be ready. Enjoy your Veterans Day weekend, please remain vigilant, and help spread some holiday cheer to our watchstanders!

NAVY HISTORY: First Flight Off A Navy Ship

On the afternoon of November 14, 1910, Eugene Ely took off in a Curtiss airplane from the USS Birmingham (CL 2). Despite inclement weather, Ely successfully landed his plane a few moments later on the beach at Willoughby Spit in Norfolk, Virginia. U.S. Navy photo From the National Air and Space Museum

On November 14, 1910, Eugene Ely, a 24-year-old civilian pilot flew the first aircraft to take off from a warship, the light cruiser USS Birmingham (CL 2) at Hampton Roads, Virginia. Ely grew up in Davenport, Iowa, and later graduated from Iowa State University in 1904 with an engineering degree. He was mechanically inclined, and was attracted to automobiles, and soon became an expert driver. Road races and work as a chauffeur took him to San Francisco where he worked for several months as an auto salesman. After marrying a local girl named Mabel Hall, he moved to Oregon. Early in 1910, a Portland, Oregon, auto dealer, E. Harry Wemme, purchased a Curtiss biplane and became an agent for Curtiss products in the Northwest. Despite his enthusiasm for airplanes, Wemme was afraid to fly, so Ely – who had no experience in a cockpit – offered to fly the Curtiss, and promptly crashed the new biplane. Embarrassed by this unexpected turn of events, Ely bought the wreck from Wemme, and wi-

thin several months had repaired the plane, and taught himself to fly. Following numerous flights in the Portland area, Ely set out for Canada to do exhibition work on his own in the summer of 1910. After successful appearances in Winnipeg, Canada, he moved back south to Minneapolis for a flying meet. While there, he met Glenn Curtiss, the designer and builder of his biplane. Curtiss was impressed with the eager young pilot and invited him join his flying exhibition team that toured around the county. In the fall of 1910, Navy Capt. Washington I. Chambers was tasked to “to observe everything that will be of use in the study of aviation and its influence upon the problems of naval warfare.” Realizing that if an airplane could be of any use to the Navy, it would have to have the ability to take off and land on a ship at sea. In October 1910 Chambers met Curtiss and Ely at a flying exhibition at Belmont Park, New York. Sensing these two men could prove if flying and landing an airplanes off a ship

was possible. He made them an irresistible offer: If he supplied the ship, would they try a shipbased takeoff? Ely quickly agreed to take on the new venture. On November 14, 1910, the Birmingham had been prepared with an 80-foot wooden platform on the bow. Ely’s 50 horsepower Curtiss Pusher plane, which had been modified with floats under the wings, was hoisted onto the deck, and by noon, the ship then moved a short distance offshore into the Chesapeake Bay. Rain and fog threatened to delay the flight, but Ely pressed on. At 3 p.m. the young pilot took off from the deck of the Birmingham. Witnesses saw the daring aviator coast down the “flight deck,” drop to the bay, hit the water with a splash, rise again, and regain altitude, where he flew to a safe landing two-and-ahalf miles away at Willoughby Spit, just a few miles east of Norfolk Naval Station. A year later, Ely’s brilliant career was cut short by a tragic crash during an air demonstration at the Georgia State Fair in Macon on October 19, 1911. Although Ely was a civilian, President Herbert Hoover recognized the significance of Ely’s contribution to naval aviation by posthumously awarding him the Distinguished Flying Cross on February 16, 1933.

SPOTLIGHT: Master Chief Petty Officer Nancy Smogoleski Master Chief Nancy M. Smogoleski was born in Ludington, Michigan, where she graduated from Ludington High School in 1985 and enlisted in the United States Navy on February 4, 1987. Following Basic Training in Orlando, Florida, she attended Radioman (RM) “A” School in San Diego, California, where she graduated in the top 10 and was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class. Upon graduation from RM “A” School, Smogoleski reported for duty to Naval Communication Area Master Station Western Pacific (NAVCAMS WESTPAC) Guam where she served as a service clerk correcting messages. Smogoleski’s 30 year career has seen her stationed in Italy, Philippines, Guam and Iceland with port-ofcalls to numerous other countries while stationed on USS Porter (DDG 78) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). In addition to successes of those duty stations, she accomplished many personal milestones along the way including her “red rope” as a Recruit Division Commander, Senior Enlisted Academy graduate, Navy Recruiter, Master Training Specialist, and two designators: Information Warfare and Surface Warfare. Smogoleski’s Naval Career has been dedicated to her mother whom she lost about four years ago, and without that strong foundation she would not be where she is today. Her future goals are to continue to develop young minds and volunteer at local schools in her community, where she can provide guidance and inspiration. While living abroad she has enjoyed learning about different cultures, finding every Hard Rock Café in Europe, and the fine art of making lemoncello. Smogoleski’s final tour was at Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NAVCOMTELSTA) Naples where she served as the Department Leading Chief Petty Officer (DLCPO) for Operations Department and as the command’s Manning Officer. She will be remembered for her passion to keep Sailors’ well-being a part of every command decision and her role as a mentor in the Chiefs mess. “I love the opportunity to travel and experience different cultures,” Smogoleski said. But more than that, I love being a Sailor and all the special bonds and comradery we still have in the Navy.”

NSA Naples Earthquake Exercise From NSA Naples Emergency Management Office

On November 17 Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples will conduct an earthquake exercise which will involve taking personal protective actions, followed by safely leaving your facility and gathering at your organization’s predesignated muster location. All personnel at the NSA Naples Installations (host and tenant commands) are expected to participate in the exercise activities as directed. Housing residents are not expected to participate. The exercise start and ending announcements will be made through giant voice and the computer desktop notification system (CDNS). All verbal and written exercise communications will begin and end with “Exercise, Exercise, Exercise.” All other communication should be treated as

actual/real world events. All host and tenant organization personnel should be aware of how to evacuate the facility in which they work, and where to go (muster) following the facility evacuation. All host and tenant organization are highly encouraged to evaluate their individual emergency action plans (EAP) for currency. This is especially true for those organizations with critical mission requirements. If there is no EAP(s) in-place, this is a great opportunity to initiate them. If you are unable to re-enter your facility because it has been deemed unsafe, what are the organization’s procedures for resuming operation at an alternate location. This is also an opportunity for all personnel to consider their individual (and family) preparations for an emergency.

ENERGY CONSERVATION Personal Energy Savings Easier Than You Think From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

The average 150 pound (68kg) man will burn 10 calories walking up one flight of stairs, while burning only 1.5 calories taking the elevator. An average serving size of gelato is about 5.2 ounces (100grams), and contains 180 calories. The average person will walk up a flight of stairs between 3-5 times a day, resulting in an annual total of 10,560 calories burned; or almost 59 servings of gelato … some “food for thought.” Save energy and promote a healthy life-style, but if you do need to treat yourself- take the stairs!

BOTTLED WATER ADVISORY From NSA Public Affairs

Except for those living at the Support Site and Capodichino, bottled water is recommended. Treated water is provided free of charge at a dispenser located outside the Capodichino east parking garage. All economy leases negotiated through the Housing office have a bottle water clause, which requires the landlord to provide bottled water. Work with landlords to have any water holding tanks disinfected twice a year, and ensure your tap water is disconnected from non-permitted wells and connected only to the city water system.

Mustangers Leading the Way for Sailors to Pursue Officer Career Path By Petty Officer 1st Class Justin Stumberg

The Naples Area Mustang Association hosted an Enlisted-to-Officer commissioning brief at the Capodichino auditorium October 27. The briefing consisted of short presentations by subject matter experts who gave overviews of the various commissioning programs and answered questions from the audience. “The commissioning brief is a means of informing our Sailors of their opportunities to pursue an Officer career path and to assist them with preparation for a better future for themselves and their families,” Naples Area Mustang Association President Lt. Vivian Maner said A 24-year Navy veteran, Maner spent 15 years as an enlisted Sailor before earning her commission through the Limited Duty Officer commissioning program in 2007. Once commissioned, Maner completed tours aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN 68), USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) and the Stennis Space Center. Maner said that the Naples Area Mustang Association was delighted in the opportunity to meet Sailors who had future ambitions of becoming an officer and offer mentorship for those interested. Once the briefing finished, Sailors

were able to talk one-on-one with officer’s who had firsthand experience with the application process and answer questions about their particular situation. One of the presenters who met with potential officer candidates was Lt. Kevin Jack, an Informational Professional officer who completed the core STA-21 program December 2007. Jack is passionate about helping those interested in becoming an officer because of his experience with the process of commissioning when he applied. “My experience was difficult and it would have been easier if they’re personnel resources available,” Jack said. “No one at my command knew about the program.” Even though there are many online resources available, questions will be inevitable Jack said. “It’s all about asking personal questions and getting personal answers,” Jack said. This type of motivation and drive to help others is shared among the Naples Area Mustang Association and was one of the main purposes of conducting the commissioning brief. Among those who played a large part in organizing the event was Lt. Salisha Labonte, Personnel Support

Detachment Naples Officer in Charge. Labonte, an Island of Trinidad and Tobago native, joined the Navy as an undesignated Airmen Recruit in February 1998. She had the chance to strike for the Personnel Specialist (PS) rating after serving at her first command. It wasn’t until a seven-month Individual Augmentee (IA) deployment

to Afghanistan in 2005 that Labonte started thinking about a career as an officer. That’s when she met Capt. John Schultz, a previously enlisted Sonar Technician who received his commission through the Limited Duty Officer (LDO) program in 1987. “It took one person to change my course,” Labonte said. OMBUDSMAN

For Sailors with families, mission readiness involves so much more than just packing a sea bag. Family readiness is of the utmost importance. In 1970, Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr. recognized the role spouses play in family readiness by keeping the family units going while our military members are out to sea. He issued a policy directive expressing the importance of spouses as part of the Navy team and directed each command to select a head spouse or “Ombudsman” to represent the command’s family members. What is an Ombudsman? Ombudsman is a Swedish word, derived from the Old Norse word “umboosmaor,” which means “representative.” Not surprisingly, this is the number one role an Ombudsman fulfills – they are a liaison between the commanding officer and the command families. The goal of the Ombudsman program is to improve mission readiness by improving family readiness, so the Ombudsman have been professionally trained as information and referral specialists, designated to help command families. This means that if you ever have an issue but you are not sure who you can turn to, your command’s Ombudsman will likely have the answer and be able to point you in the right direction. “Knowing there is always someone to turn to for information gives me huge piece of mind. With all the travel involved, it’s assuring to know that there is a support system wherever MUSTANGERS

Labonte said Schultz pushed Labonte to pursue a commissioning because of the leadership qualities and character traits she exhibited. That mentorship experience had a lasting impact on Labonte and it’s been something she uses to help others.

you go,” Spouse Personal Support Activity Detachment Astrid Ramey said. An Ombudsman can also act as a listener, who will adhere to the strictest code of confidentiality to protect the privacy of individuals. If your duty member is out to sea, or otherwise unavailable, your Ombudsman is still here to help. In fact, your Ombudsman is an excellent resource in times of crisis or disasters and is only a phone call away. There is a handy tool you can use to find out who your ombudsman will be, before you even go to your new command. To find out who your ombudsman is, or who your next ombudsman at a new command will be, visit www.ombudsmanregistry.cnic.navy.mil and click on the hyperlink “Contact Your Ombudsman.” How can you become an Ombudsman? Your command’s commanding officer will appoint an Ombudsman as an official volunteer. Once they have been appointed, they must attend Ombudsman Basic Training, which will provide them with the foundation to execute their duties efficiently, respectfully and correctly by following the Ombudsman Code of Ethics. If you are interested in becoming an Ombudsman, get involved with the command. “Having an ombudsman to help our family members with anything military related or even just day to day life gives the service member great peace of mind knowing that those at home are taken care of. I wanted to be an ombudsman because I knew this was an important role and a great way to give back to my community,” Radzyminski added.

“There are some Sailors that I see with so much potential,” Labonte said. “When I look at someone being a good officer I don’t look at how many degrees they have, I look at their heart and their desire to be a hard worker.” Labonte said that even though being smart is important, it’s not what’s going to make a good

leader. “Success as an officer is all about character, drive and passion,” she added. For details about commissioning programs visit http://www. public.navy.mil /bupers-npc/career/careercounseling/ Pages/ CommissioningPrograms.aspx or speak with your command career counselor.

New Navy College Website a Hit with Sailors By Ed Barker Naval Education and Training Professional Development Center Public Affairs

The redesign of the Navy College website has proven an immediate hit with Sailors, and feedback about virtual capabilities, response times, and improved access has been overwhelmingly positive. According to Ernest D’Antonio, Navy Voluntary Education (VOLED) director, the new virtual features are helping his team to meet their key goal of improving customer service. “The chat feature is extremely popular, primarily due to a current average pick-up time of only one

minute,” D’Antonio said. “For simple or quick questions, no one wants a long wait, and adding chat to the website and Virtual Education Center’s toolkit was a great solution.” Petty Officer 1st Class Karen Collings, career counselor for the Naval Operation Support Center in Denver, said since the “Mile High” Reserve Navy is distant from the fleet’s resources, the new website is very helpful. “It’s great to see a VOLED product that gives equal access for the Reserves,” Collings said. “As a command career counselor, I absolutely love the website and its 24/7 availability. The hardest part

for a Sailor is always ‘Where do I start?’ and the new website is excellent for that.” For Sue Sutter, VEC supervisor, the new technologies have made participating in VOLED significantly more efficient for their customers. “One example of the technologies working together is that when a Sailor takes the WebTA training while in the MyEducation/WebTA portal, it automatically populates into the Sailor’s record in the Navy College Management Information System,” Sutter said. “There’s no waiting for someone to manually enter it into their record –

it’s now instantly recorded and that shortens the initial TA qualification and application process significantly.” According to Sutter, all requests for assistance or action through the Navy College Program website are assigned an “E-ticket” and can be tracked for follow-up and research. Instead of sending an email, service members submit a Help Request E-Ticket through the Assistance Center on the website. The member can also upload documents for VOLED personnel to review through the Help Request feature. The VOLED Process section of the website provides step-by-step instructions on what is required as well as tools to assist with education options. There is also a VOLED Wizard on the website which can guide members through the process according to their responses to specific questions. “Another website addition that is saving Sailors a lot of time is the counseling self-service scheduling tool,” D’Antonio said. “The tool allows a Sailor to signup for a counseling appointment conducted virtually by a VEC counselor, or a Sailor may selfschedule a counseling appointment through one of the four CONUS Navy College Offices. Sailors can also access the website’s call-back feature to request a counselor call them

back on the phone at the Sailor’s convenience. With that many options, there’s very little wasted time.” “We are constantly refining our system and it’s working better every day,” D’Antonio added. “Last week there was a Navy-Marine Corps Internet outage at our Dam Neck, Virginia. VEC location, but we were able to continue to help Sailors through the call center and by VOLED personnel in the field, with our new chat and Eticket service. To help improve service even more, we are also in the process of increasing our VEC staff. The URL for the new Navy College Program website is http://www. navycollege.navy.mil/. The Navy’s Virtual Education Center hours are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST Monday-Friday and may be reached by calling (877) 838-1659 or DSN 4924684, or contacted via http://www.livehelpnow.net /lhn/TicketsVisitor.aspx?lh nid=30432/. Sailors can also get the latest information by following Navy Voluntary Education on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/N avyVoluntaryEducation/. We value your feedback on the new look, feel and performance of the NCP website and VEC customer service! Please submit your feedback at https://www.research.net/r/ VEC_CUST_SVC_SURVEY_V1/.

DAILY TOURS

The Origins of Veterans Day From Department of Veterans Affairs

In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This site, on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, D.C., became the focal point of reverence for America’s veterans. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an unknown soldier was buried in each nation’s highest place of honor (in England, Westminster Abbey; in France, the Arc de Triomphe). These memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I fighting at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). The day became known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day officially received its name in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution. It became a national holiday 12 years later by similar Congressional action. If the idealistic hope had been realized that World War I was “the War to end all wars,” November 11 might still be called Armistice Day. But only a few years after the holiday was proclaimed, war broke out in Europe. Sixteen and one-half million Americans took part. Four hundred seven thousand American service members died; and of these, more than 292,000 in battle. In 1954, Congress passed a bill that President Eisenhower signed, which proclaimed November 11 as Veterans Day. “Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all

those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting and enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain,” Eisenhower said. Although most federal holidays are celebrated on Mondays, to ensure that federal employees can enjoy three day weekends with their friends and families, Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. This observance of Veterans Day on November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
