President Asks Nation to Reflect on Service on Veterans Day DoD News

WORD SEARCH / COLOR ME 12

President Barack Obama saluted the service and sacrifices of America’s service members – it past and present – and proclaimed Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2015, a day to “reflect on the immeasurable burdens borne by so few in the name of so many, and we rededicate ourselves to supporting those who have worn America's uniform and the families who stand alongside them.” The president’s proclamation reads as follows: The United States military is the strongest, most capable fighting force the world has ever known. The brave men and women of our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard demonstrate a resolute spirit and unmatched selflessness, and their service reminds us there are few things more American than giving of ourselves to make a difference in the lives of others. On Veterans Day, we reflect on the immeasurable burdens borne by so few in the name of so many, and we rededicate ourselves to supporting those who have worn America's uniform and the families who stand alongside them. Our true strength as a Nation is measured by how we take care of our veterans when they return home, and my Administration is committed to ensuring our heroes and their loved ones have every chance to share in the promise they risked their lives to defend.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), tobacco use is the top preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S. It kills more than 480,000 people annually in the U.S. and six million worldwide. Tobacco use compromises military readiness and imposes increasingly high health care costs on taxpayers. QUIT SMOKING

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

On Wednesday we honored all those who serve and have served in the U.S. Armed Forces with Veterans Day. The federal holiday is celebrated annually on November 11 and coincides with Armistice Day and Remembrance days around the world, which commemorate the end of World War I. Many of our community members received thanks, support, and well wishes in-print, online, and in-person. Those “thank-you: wishes are well-deserved! Joining the Military is not just another job choice, it is the voluntary agreement to sacrifice your time, freedom, and more in service to our Nation. November11 also brings a proliferation of imagery containing a red poppy. The significance of the red poppy dates back all the way to World War I, when Col. John McCrae, a surgeon with Canada’s First Brigade Artillery, wrote a poem called “In Flanders Fields” expressing his grief over the rows and rows of poppies among the graves of soldiers who had died on Flanders’ battlefields. Two women, Anna E. Guerin and Moina Michael were so touched by his poem that they started a fundraiser selling artificial poppies to help orphans and others affected by the war. In 1920, with the help of the American Legion, Ms. Guerin brought the sale of artificial poppies to the U.S. Ms. Michael joined forces with Ms. Guerin and the Veterans of Foreign Wars to further promote this symbol. It became so popular that a poppy shortage in France prompted the construction of a poppy-making factory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. which provided a reliable source of poppies and a means of assistance to veterans. Today, veterans at Veterans Affairs facilities continue to help assemble the red poppies, which are distributed by veteran’s organizations around the country. In our location here in Naples, Italy surrounded by Italian culture, and seemingly endless travel possibilities, it can be difficult to square duty here with our brothers and sisters down-range. I will make no attempt to claim that the hardships we face are anywhere near those sleeping under the watchful eyes of our enemies, however it does not mean our mission has less meaning. The work we do here on Naval Support Activity Naples provides the leadership and infrastructure necessary for others to understand and complete their missions. I ask that you accept the thanks of your countrymen and women knowing that your actions contribute directly to the successful overseas presence of the United States Navy. This November we also celebrate military family month, recognizing not only our service members as individuals, but their families as a whole for their bravery and support of those who keep our nation safe. It is not every job that asks families to selflessly trade their time together for the security of others. The members of the NSA Naples community are intimately aware of the hardships faced and the obstacles that must be overcome. This month, please join me in celebrating the military family and remember that the strength of our personnel is fortified and re-doubled with the support of our families around them. Enjoy your weekend and start planning for those thanksgiving dinners!

The puppy was with his owner going to Ischia Island when he slipped out of his leash and fell overboard. The owner alerted the crew but they refused to stop the ferry saying the puppy had likely drowned. A group of sailors from a Naples sailing club found the puppy several hours later. He was swimming in the open sea, about halfway between Naples and Ischia, with his legs almost paralyzed by the cold. They rescued the shivering, terrified puppy and warmed him up. Meanwhile they contacted a rescue boat to take the pet back to shore. He was then reunited with his relieved owner.

NAVY HISTORY: FIRST FLIGHT OFF A NAVY SHIP

Top: On the afternoon of November 14, 1910, Eugene Ely took off in a Curtiss airplane from the USS Birmingham (CL 2). Despite inclement weather, Ely successfully landed his plane a few moments later on the beach at Willoughby Spit in Norfolk, Virginia. U.S. Navy photo Right: Pioneering aviator Eugene B. Ely. From the National Air and Space Museum

On November 14, 1910, Eugene Ely, a 24-year-old civilian pilot flew the first aircraft to take off from a warship, the light cruiser USS Birmingham (CL 2) at Hampton Roads, Virginia. Ely grew up in Davenport, Iowa, and later graduated from Iowa State University in 1904 with an engineering degree. He was mechanically inclined, and was attracted to automobiles, and soon became an expert driver.

Road races and work as a chauffeur took him to San Francisco where he worked for several months as an auto salesman. After marrying a local girl named Mabel Hall, he moved to Oregon. Early in 1910, a Portland, Oregon, auto dealer, E. Harry Wemme, purchased a Curtiss biplane and became an agent for Curtiss products in the Northwest. Despite his enthusiasm for airplanes, Wemme was afraid to fly, so Ely – who had no experience in a cockpit – offered to fly the

Curtiss, and promptly crashed the new biplane. Embarrassed by this unexpected turn of events, Ely bought the wreck from Wemme, and within several months had repaired the plane, and taught himself to fly. Following numerous flights in the Portland area, Ely set out for Canada to do exhibition work on his own in the summer of 1910. After successful appearances in Winnipeg, Canada, he moved back south to Minneapolis for a flying meet. While there,

he met Glenn Curtiss, the designer and builder of his biplane. Curtiss was impressed with the eager young pilot and invited him join his flying exhibition team that toured around the county. In the fall of 1910, Navy Capt. Washington I. Chambers was tasked to “to observe everything that will be of use in the study of aviation and its influence upon the problems of naval warfare.” Realizing that if an airplane could be of any use to the Navy, it would have to have the ability to take off and land on a ship at sea. In October 1910 Chambers met Curtiss and Ely at a flying exhibition at Belmont Park, New York. Sensing these two men could prove if flying and landing an airplanes off a ship was possible. He made them an irresistible offer: If he supplied the ship, would they try a ship-based takeoff? Ely quickly agreed to take on the new venture. On November 14, 1910, the Birmingham had been prepared with an 80-foot wooden platform on the bow. Ely’s 50 horsepower

Curtiss Pusher plane, which had been modified with floats under the wings, was hoisted onto the deck, and by noon, the ship then moved a short distance offshore into the Chesapeake Bay. Rain and fog threatened to delay the flight, but Ely pressed on. At 3 p.m. the young pilot took off from the deck of the Birmingham. Witnesses saw the daring aviator coast down the “flight deck,” drop to the bay, hit the water with a splash, rise again, and regain altitude, where he flew to a safe landing two-and-ahalf miles away at Willoughby Spit, just a few miles east of Norfolk Naval Station. A year later, Ely’s brilliant career was cut short by a tragic crash during an air demonstration at the Georgia State Fair in Macon on October 19, 1911. Although Ely was a civilian, President Herbert Hoover recognized the significance of Ely’s contribution to naval aviation by posthumously awarding him the Distinguished Flying Cross on February 16, 1933.

SPOTLIGHT: LT KIRSTEN CRUZ A California native, Lt. Kirsten Cruz, enlisted in the Navy in 1997 as a Hospital Corpsman and later became a Navy Physical Therapy Technician. Ten years and five duty stations later, she was selected for the Medical Enlisted Commissioning Program for Nursing. Cruz obtained her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Jacksonville University in 2010. Her first duty as a nurse was at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Jacksonville, Florida, where she honed her skills in maternal-child nursing. Cruz arrived at USNH Naples, Italy, in August 2013. She is currently assigned to the Multi-Service Ward where she shines as one of the most experienced labor and delivery nurses at the command. With a passion for maternal-child nursing, she’s fostering the implementation of a new program called Kangaroo or “skin to skin care.” This new method provides mothers who have unscheduled, non-emergent, cesarean section deliveries the opportunity to hold their baby, while in the operating room, immediately after birth. It ensures a comforting and positive experience for the mother and her child. Cruz has also facilitated cross-training opportunities, which enhances nursing readiness during emergent delivery situations. In her free time, Cruz enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband and four children.

Area Ombudsmen Honored at Annual Appreciation Dinner From the Naples Ombudsman Assembly

The annual Ombudsman Appreciation Dinner was held November 7 at Il Gabbiano Eventi in Baia to recognize the volunteer contributions of the Naples Ombudsman Assembly. More than 15 ombudsmen, representing 17 diverse commands, were honored for their support on the 45th anniversary of the Ombudsman Program. Ombudsmen are official Navy volunteers appointed by the commanding officer of their command to serve as an information link between the command leadership and command families. Ombudsmen receive extensive initial training and commit to many hours of continuing education throughout their tenure as a command ombudsman. NSA Commanding Officer Capt. Douglas Carpenter spoke about the unique history of the Ombudsman program and its establishment September 14, 1970, by then-Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr. Carpenter also highlighted how ombudsmen are instrumental in resolving family issues before they require extensive command attention through resource referrals and information dissemination. The theme of this year’s ombudsman event was Mediterranean Red Coral and “A Support System for Navy Life” which recognized the invaluable and sustaining

qualities of the program. The U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band’s Woodwind Quintet performed beautifully during the dinner and contributed to the special atmosphere of the evening. During the awards ceremony, command leadership presented each Ombudsman with a Letter of Appreciation, Certificate of Recognition, and a gift to commemorate the evening and recognize service to their command. In addition to the Navy leadership at the appreciation dinner, members of the Army’s 2nd NATO Battalion, Bravo Company attended and recognized the many contributions of their Family Readiness Group Leader and JFC Navy Ombudsman. The Ombudsman Assembly and Fleet & Family Support Center also presented a special gift to the out-going Ombudsman Assembly Chairperson to recognize her contributions to the Naples Ombudsman Force. Over the course of the last year, the Naples Ombudsman Assembly has volunteered thousands of hours welcoming incoming families, distributing information, answering phone calls, emails, and command inquiries, and problem solving unique issues and ongoing problems at their commands. On the 45th anniversary of the Ombudsman Program, it was a privilege and an honor to recognize all that they do.

ENERGY CONSERVATION Tightening the Belt, on Energy Consumption From the NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Turkey day grows near. Thanksgiving is celebrated with the gathering of our dear friends and family to express how thankful we are. A common tradition is the preparation of a grand feast. You can keep your wallet thankful if you keep in mind these energy saving tips while cooking your meal: ● Don’t peek! Every time the oven door is opened, the temperature inside is reduced by as much as 25 degrees, forcing it to work even harder (and use more energy) to get back to the proper cooking temperature. If you need to check on a dish, use the oven window instead. ● Turn it down or turn it off. For recipes that need to bake for longer than an hour, pre-heating the oven isn’t always necessary. And if your stovetop or oven is electric, you can usually turn it off 510 minutes before the dish should be done and the residual heat will finish the job. Alternately, if you’re baking in a ceramic or glass dish, you can set your oven for 25 degrees less than the recipe calls for. Ceramic and glass pans hold heat better than metal pans. ● Give your burners a break. For your stovetop to function effectively, it’s important that those reflectors stay free of dirt and grime. If your reflectors are of the less expensive variety, next time they need cleaning you may consider replacing them. But don’t skimp—the better reflectors on the market can not only decrease stovetop cooking times, but also save energy in the process. ● Don’t neglect your small kitchen appliances. Putting them to work more often instead of the oven or stovetop can mean significant energy savings. For example, the average toaster oven can ● Give your furnace the day off. If your next party involves a lot work for your stove, think about turning down your furnace to compensate. The heat of the oven – and all those guests – will keep the temperature comfortable, and your furnace won’t have to work so hard.

NEX Looks to Deter, Apprehend Shoplifters By Kristine M. Sturkie Navy Exchange Service Command Public Affairs

According to the National Retail Federation and the University of Florida’s National Retail Security Survey, stealing by shoppers continues to cost merchants a staggering $14.6 billion per year, and represents the second largest source of inventory shrinkage. The Navy Exchange (NEX) is no different. During 2014, NEX Loss Prevention/Safety associates investigated and resolved 1,192 shoplifting cases. Of those cases, 26 percent were juveniles and 17 percent were active duty military. The merchandise departments that saw the most shoplifting investigations were computer hardware, computer peripherals, spirits, video games and video electronics. “The NEX Loss Prevention/Safety teams located

within our stores worldwide are very good at protecting our merchandise from shoplifters,” Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) Corporate Loss Prevention/Safety Manager Tom Ruane, said. “NEX Loss Prevention/Safety associates use many tools in an effort to apprehend shoplifters or prevent theft before it happens.” NEXs worldwide use electronic article surveillance systems for electronic and high value merchandise, as well as extensive closed circuit surveillance systems (CCTV). The CCTV systems, coupled with dig-

ital video recorders and remote viewing technology, gives the NEX the ability to see everything within the store and identify incidents of theft. “CCTV continues to be an extremely effective tool in theft detection,” Ruane said. “In 2014, 76 percent of our apprehensions were through the CCTV systems. However, we still need our customers and associates to be alert to possible theft, and report any suspicious activity to the NEX management or the Loss Prevention/Safety manager.” If shoplifting is suspected, NEX Loss Prevention/Safety associ-

ates turn all incidents over to base police and/or local law enforcement. In addition to possible disciplinary action and criminal prosecution, the Federal Claims Collection Act allows NEX to enact a flat administrative cost or civil recovery of $200 for each incident of theft. “People involved in shoplifting get caught, prosecuted and possibly banned from the NEX and, in some cases, the base itself, or end a military career,” Ruane said. The mission of the NEX is to provide quality goods and services at a savings and to support Navy quality of life programs. Seventy percent of NEX profits go to support Navy quality of life programs, while the remaining 30 percent is used to build or renovate existing stores. In FY14, NEXCOM gave over $46 million to Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

“I won’t predict anything historic, but nothing is impossible” – Michael Phelps

Tiger Sharks Score Big At Home By Lyndsey Hale

The Naples Tiger Sharks were definitely historic this weekend by scoring big victories in their Home Swim Meet and Long Distance Challenge Meet November 7 onboard Capodichino. The European Forces Swim League (EFSL) Champions were honored to host Sigonella, Vicenza and Kaiserslauten, this past weekend at the Capo Fit Zone Pool. With swimmers competing from around the region the Naples Tiger Sharks had some great competition and were pushing hard for personal growth as well as a team win, the “Biggest Losers,” which are the swimmers who see the most time improvement in their Pentathlon events (the individual medley or “IM” and the butterfly, back, breast stroke and freestyle), is awarded to one male and one female. The “Biggest Losers” for this meet were Bentley Manning and Nathaniel Moriarty. “The focus over the last nine weeks has been stroke refinement and endurance training, and by just looking at the results posted for this meet their hard work has definitely paid off, the coaches are extremely excited to see 92 percent VETERANS DAY from page 1

We have made it easier for veterans to convert their military skills to the civilian workforce, enabled more veterans and their family members to attain federal education benefits, and expanded access to timely, quality health care for all veterans. Just as every veteran deserves the support and benefits they have earned, those who have given everything to defend our homeland deserve a place of their own to call home. To uphold this ideal, First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden's Joining Forces initiative has forged partnerships with local leaders QUIT SMOKING from page 1

of the team setting personal bests or swimming a new event for the first time,” Tiger Sharks Swim Coach Jane Higgins said. across America to uphold the dignity of every veteran and work to end veterans' homelessness. No one who fights for our country should have to fight for the care they deserve. Earlier this year, I was proud to sign the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act, which fills critical gaps in mental health care by raising awareness and taking steps to improve access to care for those suffering from the invisible wounds of war. Our veterans left everything they knew and loved and served with exemplary dedication and courage so we could all know a safer America and a more just world. They have

been tested in ways the rest of us may never fully understand, and it is our duty to fulfill our sacred obligation to our veterans and their families. On Veterans Day, and every day, let us show them the extraordinary gratitude they so rightly deserve, and let us recommit to pledging our full support for them in all they do. With respect for, and in recognition of, the contributions our service members have made to the cause of peace and freedom around the world, the Congress has provided (5 U.S.C. 6103(a)) that November 11 of each year shall be set aside as a legal public holiday to honor our Nation's veterans.

Circuses Adapting to a Changing World By Emily Donovan NSA Public Affairs

Cotton candy, clowns, trapeze artists. What’s not to love about the circus? According to approximately 90 percent of the general public, there is one thing. Circuses have been around since ancient Rome, when gladiators would prove their might in trials for the entertainment of a live audience. These trials included chariot races, gladiatorial combat, and fights with trained animals. In 1768 an English cavalry officer named Philip Astley brought a show together using acrobats, clowns and doing trained horse acts. This was the first modern circus, and since then circuses have been traveling the world, putting on shows, and finding new exciting things to entertain the crowds. Soon circuses began bringing in lion tamers to awe the crowd with large cats, and elephants who were trained to perform tricks. These animals were trained with negative reinforcement, and some began to fight back, causing loss of life, injury, and often escaping their captors. Due to influencing factors like escape incidents and groups like the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, an investigation was conducted. In 2008 it was found that more than 70 percent of circus

animals had medical problems, and less than half of all big cats had access to an outdoor enclosure. Since then, things have been changing. All over the world countries are taking a stand against circus animals. Many countries are now imposing a ban on the use of wild animals, and several more going as far as to ban the use of all animals in circuses. The circus has been a popular, kid-friendly attraction for decades, now many are taking a step to be animal friendly too. Several circuses including Cirque Du Soleil and Cirque Eloize now tour with mind-boggling human acts, defying the laws of physics and entertaining audiences across the globe. One thing is for sure, the art of the circus may be changing, but it’s not disappearing anytime soon.
