Getting Down and Dirty at 2016 5K Mud Run By MC3(SW) Robert S. Price Navy Public Affairs Support Element East Det. Europe

More than 800 active duty service members and family members from NSA Naples challenged the annual 5K Mud Run at Carney Park August 27, 2016. The event was bigger than ever this year, boasting nearly 300 racers more than last year’s fun run. The Navy Fitness sponsors offered exactly seven obstacles to include: two massive mud pits, a messy combat crawl, a tire wall, among several other surprises. “We have about 825 participants,” MWR Fitness Director Michelle Hewitt said. “705 people registered, and the rest ran for free. Last year we had approximately 586 runners. Today we have no age limit, start to finish.” The race was expedited this year by implementing heats. Racers could expect a shorter wait and less bottle-necking at the obstacles, a problem at previous

As of this writing, the huge Naples Pizza Village, touted as “the world’s largest, longest and most spectacular pizzeria,” is being set up at Lungomare Caracciolo (Naples waterfront). As an icebreaker, the organizers will bring 500 pizza chefs from around the world to compete for

the eight titles at stake in their respective categories at the 15th “World Pizzaiuolo Championship” September 6 to 7. Should you miss this event, go anyway to savor a Pizza Margherita or Marinara to enjoy both evening breeze and stretches of panoramic Riviera-like views. The 12 euro menu brings a pizza, drink, ice cream and coffee. Drinks and ice cream could be purchased separately at a lower cost. SEPTEMBER EVENTS

Navy Medicine recognizes September as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, beginning Sept. 1. The theme for Suicide Prevention Month 2016 is “Be There.” Throughout the month, Navy Medicine will highlight the power of peer support and personal wellness, encouraging Sailors and Marines to be there for their shipmates. “Action starts with prevention,” Vice Adm. Forrest Faison, Navy surgeon general and chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED), said. “When a Sailor needs assistance, easy access to support resources and mental health treatment is essential, as is validation of help-seeking behaviors.” Suicide prevention is a yearlong effort. Suicide Prevention Month serves as a reminder that building resilience and preventing suicide requires all members of the Navy and Marine Corps community to work together. Every life lost to suicide is one too many. “Take action if you notice anything out of the ordinary for a shipmate; reach out to them,” Faison said. “If you are having difficulties, seek help if needed. Seeking help is a sign of strength. It’s okay to speak up when you’re down.”

CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Amatrice last week and at least 247 people lost their lives. If you are interested in assisting, the government of Italy has identified the Italian Red Cross as the coordinating agency and listed various supplies that would be welcomed as donations. A number of donation locations around the installation are available. The Naval Support Activity Naples community will keep the town, and those who have lost loved ones, in our thoughts. This may also be a good time to review your own readiness for an emergency and to take the time to build your at-the-ready survival kit. We live in and around a volcanic area and there is always the possibility that nature could strike with little warning. Being prepared is always a good idea. Today marks the arrival of Labor Day weekend. Every first Monday of September the United States honors the American labor movement and celebrates the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades can be problematic. Our community, despite its position outside of the United States, will participate by enjoying a few days off of the normal routine. I encourage you all to take full advantage of the long weekend to get off base and explore new locations around Italy and Europe. Your time in Italy won’t last forever, and soon enough you’ll be thinking more about your next PCS move than touring. Please take advantage of our unique location and the tours offered by MWR and the USO. Labor Day also marks the unofficial end of summer and the end of the first week of school for the kids at our DODEA schools. I hope everyone enjoyed their time off this summer recharging their batteries or maybe earning a little bit of extra money. On September 10 we will host our first home football game featuring the Naples Wildcats vs the Rota Admirals at Carney Park. Even though I am a proud alumnus of the Adm. David Glasgow Farragut High School and the Rota football team, I will be aggressively cheering for a Naples win! Go Wildcats! Slow down, stay safe, and have a great weekend!

State Memorial Service for Victims of Last Week’s Earthquake Authorities Setting up Temporary Quarters for Survivors; Investigating Possible Building Code Violations A state funeral was held on Tuesday for victims of last week’s 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck a cluster of communities in central Italy killing 292 people. The funeral was held amid the ruins of Amatrice, a town located in the Lazio region, in a temporary structure. Thirty-seven coffins were laid out for the service. Most of those who died had already been buried in private family services or after a first state funeral held in Ascoli Piceno on Saturday. President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, the parliamentary speakers and other dignitaries were among hundreds of mourners at the service. The Amatrice death toll was 231, another 11 people died in the town of Accumoli, and 50 more died in the Marche mountain village of Arquata del Tronto. About 2,900 survivors are presently housed in Civil Protection tents. Most of the buildings in the quake zone had no anti-seismic protection, but even some of those that did, including a school in Amatrice that was subjected to an expensive anti-earthquake upgrade in 2012, fell apart. Magistrates have opened an investigation with the issuing of a sequestration order related to the elementary school, and the collapse of a bell tower in the town of Accumoli, which smashed through the roof of an adja-

NAVY HISTORY: LTJG GEORGE H.W. BUSH RESCUED BY SUB

Crew of USS Finback rescue downed Navy airman Lt. j.g. George H.W. Bush from the waters off Chichi Jima, Bonin Islands, on September 2, 1944. Photo courtesy of George Bush Presidential Library and Museum By Rolfe L. Hillman

On September 2, 1944, USS Finback (SS 230) rescued Lt. j.g. George H.W. Bush – who later became the 41st President of the United States – after being shot down while attacking Chi Chi Jima. One of the lesser known, but important missions of the U.S. Submarine Force in the Pacific theater during World War II was rescuing U.S. and Allied airmen who had been shot down over water. Lifeguard missions were planned in support of aerial attacks. U.S. submarines would arrive on station in the target area ahead of the attack, often providing lastminute weather and enemy movement information to the attacking forces. Aircrews were given the submarines’ radio frequencies, location and bearing references, and code names. If a plane was hit and going down, the airmen or

another pilot could transmit the location of the downed aircrew to waiting submarines. Upon receiving information about downed aircrew, the responding submarine would have to surface, often before the combat had ended, potentially exposing themselves to fire from enemy aircraft, shore batteries or ships. The crew then had to go on deck, throw lines to the airmen, haul them up on deck, and get them safely below. In some cases, the submarine crew had to use rubber rafts to retrieve downed airmen. USS Skate (SS 305) made the first submarine lifeguard rescue on October 7, 1943, near Wake Island on her first war patrol, rescuing Lt. j.g. Richard G. Johnson. Skate went on to rescue five more airmen during the same operation. Nearly a year later, On September 2, 1944, Bush put his TBM-2 Avenger torpedo-bomber into a steep dive over Chichi Jima Island and released four 500-pound bombs on a Japanese radio-communications installation. The bombs destroyed the installation but the Japanese defenders’ anti-aircraft fire riddled his plane and set it on fire. Bush successfully bailed out, but his two crewmates, Lt. j.g. William White, an intelligence officer making first-hand observations, and Radioman 2nd Class John Delaney, perished. Bush landed in the waters offshore of the island within sight of the garrison, which was notorious for its brutal treatment of prisoners, including beheading and cannibalism. Fortunately for Bush, Finback was stationed nearby on its 10th war patrol. Lifeguard operations continued until the end of the war. During the war, 86 different U.S. submarines rescued 520 U.S. and Allied airmen. USS Tigrone (SS 419) had the highest tally with 31 rescues, including the final rescued pilot In 1942 George H.W. The fitness team plans to expand the Mud Run to become bigger and better with each new year, and changes such as these will help accommodate a larger event. The Mud Run attracted many familiar faces from the Naples Navy community this year, to include flag officers and fitness leaders that have an appetite to test their endurance and get messy with their friends. The current chief selects came out as a unit to traverse the muddy environment under the menta-

lity: Start as a team, finish as a team, nobody finishes last. “We have about 35 selectees here and about 20 chiefs,” Chief (Select) Air Controlman Austin Horst said. “It was a pretty big group. It was awesome.” Horst led the team of chief selectees out the starting gate and over the first hill over, to rally the love and support of the Carney grandstand crowd. He could be spotted for the remainder of the race, doubling back to pick-up the rear and encourage straggling shipmates to finish strong

with the team. “The MWR Reps out here setting up and making sure we have a fun event is just outstanding,” Horst said. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better.” The Seabees and 6th Fleet volunteered to offer barbecue vending, and the Carney Park staff came out to build the obstacles. Command Fitness leaders and the chief selects also volunteered during the remainder of the event. All the racers received a medallion and a T-shirt for participation. All proceeds go back to MWR Fitness for future events.

ENERGY CONSERVATION Drops Need Watts – Every Drop Counts! From the Environmental Protection Agency

Water and energy work together. How is that, you might ask. Have you ever picked up a gallon of water or milk from the fridge? It’s pretty heavy, right? A lot of energy is used to carry every gallon of water you use from a drinking water source to a treatment plant that makes it safe to drink. After water leaves the treatment plant, more energy is needed to carry it through water pipes to your house. Imagine the journey it has taken – and just how tired you would be after carrying that much water all day! And the work doesn’t stop there. If you want that water to be hot, it takes energy to warm it up before it hits the tap. Here’s some food for thought – the energy it takes to treat and deliver the water that just 10 houses use in a year could power your home’s refrigerator for more than two years. That’s why it’s so important not to waste water at home or school. Take shorter showers, and don’t leave the water on when you brush your teeth. Make sure to turn off the faucet all the way after you wash your hands. And, if water drips from the faucet after you turn it off, it could be a leak. Tell an adult so it can be fixed. Did You Know? Water is also used to cool the power plants that generate the electricity we use every day. So every time your television, computer, or lights use energy, water is being used up too. So, turn off the lights, and save both water and energy!

Toner Cartridges and Sustainment of our Environment By Rob Chichester NSA Naples Installation Environmental Program Director

Environmental Issues, Recycling, and Disposal Copiers and printers are commonplace in almost any office. Our business operations generate thousands of toner cartridges each year. If thrown into the trash they will end up in our landfills potentially causing harm to the environment. The plastics used in toner cartridges are made of engineering grade polymers that degrade very slowly and once in the landfill they will stay there virtually forever. The good news is 90-95% of the materials used to manufacture a toner cartridge are recyclable. In Italy toner cartridges are classified as a special waste and should not go in the trash. Used or obsolete toner cartridges that are properly turned in to the NSA Naples Hazardous Waste program are - subsequently turned over to Defense Logistics Agency for recycling at a cost of approximately one dollar per Kilogram. However, certain toner cartridge manufacturers, such as Hewlett Packard (HP) and Lexmark, recycle their products through dedicated take back pro-

grams at no cost to the U.S. Navy. Health Effects, Personal Protection, and Clean-Up Ink toner has a very low toxicity and isn’t a cause for alarm, even in the case of a broken toner cartridge. The key to managing potential health hazards of toner is to avoid inhaling it and minimize exposure to skin. This can cause respiratory issues similar to inhaling irritant dust, as well as headaches, and itchiness from skin exposure. Eyes should be flushed with clean cool water in the event that toner directly makes contact. Skin contact should be cleaned with soap and cold water. Toner is a mix of carbon powder and iron oxide, and then mixed with polymer. Toner particles are melted by the heat of the fuser, and then bonded to the paper. Because toner is a wax or plastic powder with a low melting temperature it is very important to use cold water for cleanup of skin or clothing. Hot or warm water softens the toner, causing it to bond in place. Toner fused to clothing usually cannot be removed. Clean up of broken or leaking toner cartridges includes the following: ● If spilled toner is discovered and wiped up quickly, the powder won’t

have a chance to stain your clothes, floor, desk, or equipment. ● Put on a paper mask and disposable gloves before cleaning up the spilled toner. Open a window, if possible, to provide ventilation. ● Scoop up large quantities with a spoon or similar instrument. Deposit the power in a plastic bag. Seal the bag tightly and label it “Waste Toner.” Turn the plastic bag containing waste toner into the Environmental Department along with your used and obsolete toner cartridges. ● Take soiled clothing or other fabric materials outside. Hold the garment over a trash can, then shake the item several times to knock off loose powder. If any toner remains, launder the garment with cold water in the washing machine. Don’t use warm or hot water and no clothes dryer, as it will cause the stain to set. Turn-In for Recycling Follow these simple steps to comply with regulations and policies and help keep your office and our environment healthy: ● Place used toner cartridge in the plastic bag provided when purchased. For more than one cartridge, place

them in a larger plastic bag, separated by brand, i.e. HP, Lexmark, all other. ● Recycle the cardboard box separately. For Capodichino, call Public Works Environmental at DSN 6266642/6643 to set up an appointment to drop off government purchased toner cartridges at the Environmental warehouse, Bldg. 402, behind the Supply warehouse. ● For Support Site, call Public Works Environmental at DSN 6266642/6643 to set up an appointment to drop off government purchased toner cartridges at the Environmental warehouse, Bldg. 2075A, behind the Public Works building. ● For Support Site residential housing, do not dispose of personal print and toner cartridges in regular trash, please contact the Housing Office for proper disposal. ● For Economy Housing residences, do not dispose of personal print and toner cartridges in regular trash, please contact your landlord for proper disposal. ● For other office locations contact supervisory personnel or your Environmental representative for proper turn-in and disposition.

If San Gennaro’s blood liquefies on schedule on September 19, there’s a big festival, including this one at his church in Pozzuoli. Failure to liquefy portends disaster in the coming year. Photo by Jim Freed

SEPTEMBER EVENTS

from page 1 The Village will be open September 6 to 11, from 6 p.m. to midnight. For details visit http://www.pizzavillage.it/en/ Phlegrean Fields’ Malazè From the zone of enchanting bay views, intriguing volcanic craters, archaeological sites and myths as well as relaxing thermal springs and scrumptious seafood and wines, myriad archeo-eno-gastronomical events called “Malazè,” coined from an ancient term for “fishermen’s warehouse,” begin tomorrow (September 3). Wealthy Romans built villas in the area (Baths of Baia as example) attracting 18th century “Grand Tour” royal travelers, celebrities and artists for the sights, sounds and flavors. Yearly, local tourism officials, dozens of associations (Italian Sommeliers and Slow Food among others) businesses, restaurateurs and wine producers pool ideas to create a 10-day program to increase tourism in Pozzuoli (famed for seafood and the Solfatara crater), Bacoli, Baia, Monte di Procida, Fusaro and Quarto. Mark the events that strike your fancy then join in the fun September 3 to 18. For details visit http://www.malaze.it/ Feast of San Gennaro The annual events described above serve as a drumroll for the

miraculous blood liquefaction of Naples’ patron saint. The phenomenon, said to stave off disaster and protect the city along with its surroundings, is anticipated to occur annually September 19 or thereabouts. To commemorate the occasion, the day begins with a morning Mass at the Naples Cathedral (home for the saint’s blood ampules) as well as at the saint’s cozy namesake church in Pozzuoli. Town residents believe the hill topped by a cross above San Gennaro Church in Pozzuoli was the decapitation site of the good bishop from Benevento. Others speculate the martyrdom occurred where the church now stands. Customarily, brightly colored light arches adorn the Pozzuoli church a few days leading up to the celebrations. A musical show, fireworks display along with a procession of the saint’s bust with Franciscan priests and a band highlight festivities. For details call the church at 081526-1114. Oriental Festival Experience cultures and traditions of India, China, Japan, Thailand, South Korea and more through typical gastronomy, folklore shows, martial arts, natural medicines and other treats September 23 to 25 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mostra d’Oltremare is near the Campi Flegrei station and the Naples soccer stadium. Entry fee

Mozart’s ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ For fans of the legendary composer, the San Carlo Theater will reopen its doors after a summer break with the light and comic opera, “The Marriage of Figaro.” The piece continues the story of the barber, Figaro, now experiencing the revenge of Dr. Bartolo whose love for Rosina the barber thwarted in the “The Barber of Seville.” Program runs September 24 to October 4. For details visit http://www.teatrosancarlo.it or call 081-797-2331/2412. Solopaca (BN) Grape Fest The town in Benevento province town will host the annual parade of floats constructed with thousands upon thousands of grapes to celebrate the fruit and its nectar September 11 at 9:30 a.m. Should you miss the parade, floats will be parked in the town’s main street by 2 p.m. As expected, wine will be for sale at the community winery just outside town as well as from various vendors along the parade route. My Emergency Preparedness Kit Be Informed. Make a Plan. What Do I Need to Have? What Else Should I Think About? By Ryan Fajutrao NSA Naples Emergency Dispatch Managerr

Napoli, the Campania Region and Italy offer many opportunities to each of us that others can only dream of. While we make the most of the experience, we need to understand and accept the potential for emergency situations such as earthquakes here. As you know, there was devastating earthquake that struck central Italy at 3:36 a.m. on August 24 as a magnitude 6 with strong aftershocks, causing significant damage and loss of life. This tragedy serves as a vivid reminder of both the threat and impact of a natural disaster, and our need to prepare as much as possible. NSA Naples Emergency Management Officer Sean M. Quinn urges people to pay heed to these important – and possibly lifesaving – precautions. “The threats are real, the potential hazards are real,” Quinn said. “We need to accept them as part of our everyday lives and plan accordingly – As an individual, a family and organizationally.” For weeks, months and probably years you have been hearing those of us in the emergency management and preparedness business tell you over and over again that you need to have an emergency plan and kit built and ready at all times. While that sounds great, do you know what you should have in your kit to sustain you and your family following an emergency and for how long? To be of assistance, the following is provided as a recommended starting point for you in getting prepared and staying ready. In addition to NSA Naples Emergency Management staff, there are several other great online sources of information to get you started in building your kit. These serve as a great foundation, but must be tailored to meet your individual and family’s requirements: ● Ready Navy: http://www.ready.navy.mil/ BuildAKit/EmergencyKits/index.htm ● FEMA’s Ready.gov: http://www.ready.gov/ build-a-kit ● The American Red Cross: http://upson. redcross.org/Media/checklist.pdf ● American Red Cross’ “Let’s Make a Kit”: http://youtu.be/TLFkD8TiTvs ● American Red Cross’ What’s in My Kit Video: http://youtu.be/Qp9C9capzbw ● Italy’s Department of Civil Protection: http://www.protezionecivile.gov.it/jcms/en/homepage.wp All of the sources suggest building a kit that should sustain you and your family for at least three days. Because of the unique features and potential hazards in this region of Italy, it is recommended you plan for two full weeks of consumables (food, water, batteries, etc.), in addition to the other (non-consumables) items in the kit. This will help with you and your family’s immediate needs being met with minimal reliance on others. This point is very important because the severity of an emergency event may be significant, and resources may be extremely limited and not immediately available to us. At a minimum, recommend your emergency kit have the following supplies. Plan for and monitor expiration dates and shelf-life of all kit contents. Another key point to consider is the portability of your kit. This may be the most challenging factor in planning for and assembling your kit. If we were to remain in our homes during and after an emergency event, we need to make sure our kits are accessible. In this case, the kit can be stored and maintained in large containers on in a cabinet. However, depending upon the type and severity of the emergency event, we may be required to evacuate our homes, or

even the area. In this situation our emergency kit must be scaled down to the supplies necessary to sustain us for approximately three days. We must also plan for a method of packing and carrying our emergency kit. One suggestion is to place the contents of your kit into a portable container (or containers) and store them. Another is to have the portable containers immediately available to pack the supplies you have stored in larger containers or cabinet. The type of portable containers you can use can be backpacks, small to medium luggage with rollers/wheels, tear/rip resistant bags, etc. The key to portability is just that – Don’t pack your emergency evacuation kit in a container you cannot lift or carry. Also, take full advantage of sharing the load among capable family members as much as reasonably possible. We all remember the adventure we had during our move to Naples. If your adventure was anything like our’s, it was a bit of a challenge: The point is, don’t pack more than you or your family can carry. The most effective way to minimize (but not eliminate) the additional stress of an emergency event in our lives is to prepare ourselves and our families as much as possible through discussions and development of your family’s emergency plan and the assembly of your emergency kit. These discussions and our preparations will cause a bit of natural anxiety in all of us, but more so among our children. We should consider the tone and content of our discussions with, and around them. I would strongly suggest the following on-line resources for parents to use in getting their children involved in the planning and preparations through their understanding of the facts. ● Ready Navy Kids: http://www.ready.navy.mil/Kids/index.htm ● FEMA’s Fun & Games for Kids: http://www.ready.gov/kids ● National Fire Protection Association: http://www.sparky.org/index.html ● National Weather Service: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/reachout/kidspage. shtml Over the past couple of years we have participated in various earthquake drills, and we will continue to do so in the future. These events offered us an opportunity to educate ourselves and one another about the likelihood of an earthquake here, and the importance of preparing ourselves to get through them. “The earthquake in Central Italy in the early morning hours of August 24th underscores the importance of being prepared for natural disasters that may occur in our area,” Christie Connell of the NSA Naples American Red Cross Chapter said. “Having open family discussions about where you would meet, when to take shelter, and what supplies to have on hand can have a huge impact in helping families recover after devastating emergencies.” Consider the “what if’s” associated with an earthquake and what you need to do to prepare your emergency plan and build your kit. “Plan and be prepared for the emergency as through it could happen tomorrow – because it could,” Quinn advised. For additional information, please contact your Command’s emergency management staff or the NSA Naples Emergency Management Division at DSN 626-5303/3585 or Comm. 39-081568-5303/3585 or email EMOGROUP@eu.navy.mil or visit the NSA Naples Emergency Management web site at: http://www.cnic.navy.mil/regions/cnreurafswa/in stallations/nsa_naples/om/emergency_management.html

One of the most iconic images of labor is “Rosie the Riveter,” the indefatigable World War II-era woman with rolled up sleeves, flexing her arm and proclaiming, “We Can Do It!” against a yellow background. But, this actually isn’t the original Rosie. In 1942, as World War II raged in Europe and the Pacific, a popular song “Rosie the Riveter” filled radio waves across the home front. Manufacturing giant Westinghouse commissioned artist J. Howard Miller to make a series of posters to promote the war effort. One poster featured a woman with her hair wrapped up in a red polka-dot scarf, rolled up sleeve and flexing her bicep. At the top of the poster, the words ‘We Can Do It!’ are printed in a blue caption bubble. To many people this image is “the” Rosie the Riveter. But it was never the intention to make this image “Rosie,” nor did many Americans then think of her as “Rosie.” The connection of Miller’s image and “Rosie” is a fairly recent phenomenon. The “Rosie” image, which was popular during the war was created by illustrator Norman Rockwell – who undoubtedly was familiar with the “Rosie the Riveter” song – for the cover of the 1943 Memorial Day cover of Saturday Evening Post. Rockwell’s image depicted a tough looking, muscular woman wearing overalls, rolled-up sleeves, goggles, and a riveting tool in her lap, while eating a sandwich. Her lunch pail

has “Rosie” written on it, and she’s stepping on a copy of Adolph Hitler’s book “Mein Kampf.” That Saturday Evening Post cover exemplified the indomitable American can-do spirit, and illustrated the notion of women working in previously male-dominated manufacturing jobs – an ever-growing reality – to help the United States fight the war while the men fought overseas. The cover was an enormous success and soon stories about real life “Rosies” began appearing in newspapers across the country. The government took advantage of the popularity of Rosie the Riveter and embarked on a recruiting campaign of the same name. That campaign brought millions of women out of the home and into the workforce. To this day, Rosie the Riveter is still considered the most successful government advertising campaign in history. After the war, numerous requests were made to the Saturday Evening Post to reproduce their image of Rosie the Riveter, however all requests were denied. As a result, Miller’s “We Can Do It!” image, which allowed its image to be reproduced, was quickly seen on coffee mugs, lunch boxes and countless other items. As a result, Miller’s Rosie eventually replaced Rockwell’s illustration as “Rosie the Riveter” in the minds of many people, making her and not the original “Rosie” the most famous of all labor icons.
