EPOCH: A Runway Show and Gala 2016

EPOCH, A NSCAD FASHION SHOW APRIL 16, 016 NSCAD UNIVERSITY PORT CAMPUS

EPOCH WAS EPIC There was a moment as the first models came out from behind the curtain that those of us who had organized EPOCH could finally breathe. Not only was everything coming together, it was doing so beautifully. Looking fierce and proud, the models turned on their heels at the end of the runway in the waterside VIP Room, exited and paraded down a second runway across the hall. The applause that followed in their wake was thundering.

Canadian fashion icon Jeanne Beker was the special guest for EPOCH, held on April 16, 2016 at NSCAD’s Port Campus. The long-time host of Fashion Television spoke to the student designers prior to the show; while what she had to say was inspiring, it was also a reality check. The key to success, she informed, is for designers to hone their craft and always to have a strong, precise point of view.

And that is definitely the NSCAD advantage: the fashion program is linked strongly with textiles, so

students gain a thorough understanding of cloth.

The program balances the conceptual concerns of design with the textile traditions of weaving, dyeing, printing, pattern making and garment construction. As evidenced by EPOCH, not only did students design their clothes from an original point of view, in many cases they also printed, embellished and wove the fabrics used.
