They share a bold vision that the holistic integration of higher education across our society paves the way for opportunity, empowerment, and transformation at every level. Our inaugural Rising Champion honoree, Nathaniel Montero , brings this vision to life through his exemplary accomplishments and shared dedication to service, advocacy, and philanthropy to ensure higher education is accessible and attainable for all.

for NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE CELEBRATION
THE COURAGE OF A CHAMPION
Like the Champions Award honorees that we celebrate, our students are courageous in their choice to pursue higher education. They invest their time, energy and passion in a vision for something others may not have thought to be possible, and they persist through challenges and doubts along the way to successfully turn that vision into a new reality. The impact of this courage extends far beyond themselves, creating life-changing opportunities for a new generation and inspiring others to be courageous as well.
I am honored to join our exemplary Champions honorees, our excellent faculty, dedicated staff, key stakeholders, and committed philanthropic partners to ensure excellent and equitable life outcomes for our amazing students, our incredible alumni, and our community as a whole. It is our collective courage that will turn this bold vision into reality for our region and elevate us all.

Richard Yagjian NSCC Class of 1968
A distinguished alumnus of the NSCC’s second graduating class, Richard “Rich” Yagjian is a passionate volunteer leader, ambassador, and philanthropist for higher education, the arts, and community service. Rich served as a governor-appointed Trustee and Chair of NSCC’s Board of Trustees from 2009–2015, during which he led the hiring of the college’s first female president. He served as a Director and President of the NSCC Foundation from 2003–2015, growing the scholarship program and securing philanthropic investment for campus expansions. In recognition of COMMUNITY IMPACT
Dr. Patrick Tutwiler Massachusetts Secretary of Education
DR. PATRICK TUTWILER’S EQUITYcentered vision for education as Superintendent of Lynn Public Schools (LPS) has transformed the future of public education in the Commonwealth. During his tenure, Dr. Tutwiler secured critical support from the City of Lynn and the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to expand LPS’ groundbreaking Early College program with NSCC through the launch of the state’s first Early College high school — the Frederick Douglass Collegiate Academy at NSCC. Despite the unprecedented impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Tutwiler turned the challenge of burgeoning enrollment exceeding space capacity in the LPS District into a life-changing opportunity for students from the City of Lynn to earn their high school degree and up to 60 college credits simultaneously at NSCC at no cost to the students or their families. Dr. Tutwiler currently serves as Secretary of the Executive Office of Education for the Commonwealth under the Healey Administration, which oversees early education, K-12 and higher education, and he sits on each of the boards governing the state’s education agencies, as well as the UMass system.

Debra Ruggiero Interim Superintendent, Lynn Public Schools
DRAWING FROM NEARLY FOUR decades of experience as an educator and administrator with the Lynn Public Schools (LPS), Debra Ruggiero led the state’s fifth largest school district in its successful implementation of MA’s first Early College high school in partnership with NSCC. Ms. Ruggiero leveraged her multifaceted expertise to design and integrate a brand new holistic high school experience within a college setting, from academic curriculum, classroom design, IT infrastructure and student resources, to the hiring of educators and administrators. In its inaugural academic year, 75 freshmen from across LPS enrolled in the Frederick Douglass Collegiate Academy (FDCA), with the majority of students racially and ethnically diverse and historically marginalized from higher education. The early results are tremendous, with 85% of FDCA students earning six college credits. Thanks to her leadership, FDCA is on track to grow to 400 students by the 2025-2026 academic year. Ms. Ruggiero currently serves as Interim Superintendent for LPS, with a focus on school improvement, engaging families in educating students, and educating the next generation of leaders.

NSCC CHAMPIONS AWARD HONOREE
In recognition of PUBLIC SERVICE & ADVOCACY
WHEN THE NSCC student survey in 2016 revealed that more than half of students had high or very high levels of food insecurity, NSCC formed a ground-breaking partnership with The Open Door, the leading hunger-relief organization serving the North Shore, to address student hunger. Since 2017, The Open Door has provided monthly Mobile Markets serving the NSCC Danvers campus, expanding to serve the Lynn campus in 2021. Mobile Markets connect students to free, nutritious food in an accessible and socially acceptable environment. Students are also connected to SNAP (Food Stamps) assistance. When the NSCC Mobile Market was temporarily suspended due to COVID, The Open Door created a no-contact drive-thru Mobile Market with pre-packaged bags of groceries to keep the community safe while assisting the most vulnerable students. The Open Door also sits on the Hunger Free Campus Coalition, advocating on behalf of food insecure students. In 2022, The Open Door connected 8,486 people from 4,872 households across the North Shore through the distribution of 1.78 MILLION pounds of food.

Nathaniel Montero
NSCC Class of 2016
NATHANIEL MONTERO’S ONLY option for higher education after graduating from Salem High School was North Shore Community College. Fortunately, it was also the very best option. Having underachieved in high school, Nathaniel soared at NSCC as an exemplary student leader, where he gained invaluable self-confidence, a passion for academics, and aspirations for a career with a community service focus. While enrolled at NSCC, he was an awardee of the NSCC Foundation Scholarship Program, and he served in the prestigious roles of NSCC Student Trustee from 2015–2016 and as the 2016 NSCC Commencement Student Speaker. After graduating with an A.A. in Liberal Arts, Nathaniel went on to earn a B.A. in Political Science from Boston University and an M.S. in Sports Management from Georgetown University. He currently serves as Community Relations Coordinator for the Boston Red Sox. Now in a position to ‘give back’ as an alumnus, Nathaniel is a proud ambassador for community college education, sharing his transformational journey to inspire prospective students to follow in his footsteps and for donors to invest in NSCC.
