Annual Report

Why I Give “We are very much a North Shore Country Day School family which includes three children, two daughters-in-law and two grandsons, all of whom are proud alumni of the School. Our formal relationship with North Shore began in 1964 when our children entered the School at the beginning of what was to become an outstanding academic and cultural experience of everlasting value. We, as parents, also have cherished our connection with North Shore. We have enjoyed its culture of students, fellow parents, faculty and administration, many of whom we have come to count as part of our external family. We salute the excellence of North Shore and offer our cheers for its even greater future.”

“ I give because I value the opportunities, both large and small, that North Shore gives its students. North Shore is filled with chances to explore exciting areas, and I know that it’s Annual Giving that enables the full richness of being a student at North Shore.” Lane Young, assistant director of library services and academic technology

Susie and Howard Jessen, parents and grandparents of alumni

“North Shore delivers on the high standards and excellence it prides itself on. Since the first day of JK, North Shore has demonstrated a commitment to my boys on every academic level, in every physical, social and creative endeavor, and at every life turn, all the while understanding them for the individuals they are. The kind of education that North Shore delivers is the greatest gift I can give my boys. My support of North Shore helps make this kind of education possible.” Wendy Strauss, parent

“If it was not for continuous financial support from alumni, parents and friends, the North Shore experience would not have been possible when I attended nor would it be available for my children.” Bill Ake ’88, parent

Reflection

L E T TE R F R O M TH E H E A D O F SC H O O L TO M D OA R I I I

“We must thank those who help make North Shore the place it is day to day.” Saying thank you should be easy; to acknowledge others and clarify the difference they make is a common courtesy that we have come to expect. People feel good when they are acknowledged and are often energized knowing that their efforts have made a difference. As Head of School, I recognize that among the things I need to do well is say “thank you.” For without the investment of time, energy and resources of so many, North Shore would be just another school. Thankfully, North Shore is not just another school. It’s a school that engages each individual in a meaningful way, a school that allows each and every student to make a difference, a school with a 90 year history. North Shore “does school” at a very high level. Critical to how we do school are the people in our community: students who care and commit to doing their best, teachers who fully invest themselves, and parents and alumni who support, encourage and give. This highly effective combination leads to student growth, a sense of pride and a sense of connection— the core of what makes North Shore, North Shore. As I reflect back on the 2009/10 school year, I am struck by the fullness of our agenda which, in my perspective, was the result of two factors. First and foremost, was our commitment to student growth: day to day students were stretched, supported and engaged in very meaningful, positive and productive ways. Learning in and out of the classroom was evident as students were challenged to learn

4 Acorn Annual Report 2009–2010

language, mathematics, science, history, art and literature, while, at the same time, asked to grow as people emotionally and physically. I feel very good about our students’ growth—and have seen their efforts validated. Secondly, we made great strides this year advancing our strategic agenda—a vision established by our Board of Trustees to build on North Shore’s core values and strengthen all that we do. This past year, we may have accomplished more on our strategic agenda than in any year in recent memory thanks to the involvement and support of so many. We prepared our Upper School building for a complete renovation which will take place during the upcoming academic year; advanced a soon-to-be-announced Capital Campaign aimed at increasing support for teachers and students and modernizing both the Upper School building and auditorium; focused our efforts in the areas of global awareness, sustainability and service; and ultimately remained a group of people who are committed to openness and acceptance for all members of our community. My thank you, then, is far-reaching. Thank you to all who have come before—those who established North Shore as a school that puts students first, a school that is committed to the development of the “whole person.” Thank you to those who have influenced the School during this past year. Thank you to students, to faculty and staff, to parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents and friends. Your efforts matter—they have made a difference— they count.

Profiles Tom Formolo, Board Chair What is the role of a Trustee? Trustees wear

several hats. Trustees serve as ambassadors for the School. In this role, they are expected to promote North Shore’s best interests and help stimulate enrollment demand. They are also responsible for working with school leadership to develop medium- and long-term strategic plans and then make sure that the School has the resources to implement those plans. As a result, Trustees must be involved with raising capital funds for the School. Another important role is to advise the Head of School and serve as a sounding board regarding all varieties of strategic activities. Lastly, Trustees are responsible for ensuring that the culture, character and standing of the School are preserved over the long term. How do you find the time to volunteer at North Shore? I am a firm believer that you always make time for things that are important to you. I truly believe that North Shore is making a big difference in the lives of its students through quality education and by instilling the importance of serving others. It is my belief in this mission that motivates me to make the time. How can parents support the Board to help North Shore meet its goals? Parents can

help by giving of their time, talents and treasures. The engagement of the school community in supporting students is a major component of the rich, deep experience at North Shore. Further, the proper functioning of the School depends on the involvement of parents. There are numerous ways to support the School, from being a room parent or working in the cafeteria, to being involved in the Parents’ Association or the Benefit Board and many more. In addition, consistently supporting the School financially through Annual Giving, the Benefit Board Auction and Capital Campaigns enables us to deliver the experience that makes North Shore special. In fact, tuition only covers approximately 68% of the cost of educating a student at North Shore.

16 Acorn Annual Report 2009–2010

What is unique about the North Shore experience? North Shore is unique in

two fundamental ways. First, students have the opportunity to be involved in a broad range of experiences from clubs to performing arts to athletics. Further, the palette of offerings is extremely rich. As a result, students have a breadth and depth of experience that they could not have at most other schools. Second, students are known at North Shore. Our small size combines with our low student-to-faculty ratio and invested parent population to provide a true community where students thrive and are supported. What is it about North Shore that motivates alumni, parents and friends to give so generously? North Shore is special. It does not take long for those new to the School to recognize this. Once involved and invested, parents and students feel like they are a part of a vital, extended family. This connectedness makes it natural and easy to support the School. There is a desire to preserve, protect and perpetuate the institution so that North Shore continues to thrive.

“ North Shore is special. It does not take long for those new to the School to recognize this. Once involved and invested, parents and students feel like they are a part of a vital, extended family.” Above // Tom Formolo and Hayley Formolo ’10

Tom Flickinger, Development Chair Why is Annual Giving important? Annual Giving helps to close the gap of approximately $8,000 per student between tuition and the cost to educate a child. We are fortunate to have a very deep curriculum for the size of our school—clearly something that sets us apart—and in turn these programs need to be paid for. I have been so impressed with North Shore’s faculty and staff, parents, alumni and friends. Everyone gives so thoughtfully and generously. Our participation is remarkable with faculty and staff reaching 100% participation. 75% of parents participated in Annual Giving, up over 10% from last year. Alumni participation was strong, surpassing last year’s participation percentage as well. These numbers are significantly above the average for our peer group schools. It is so very much appreciated that people understand this is truly a separate fund the School needs to raise each year to help cover our costs. It’s a significant percentage of our annual budget.

“ I’m not sure everyone knows that 100% of our faculty and staff participate in Annual Giving!” Why are Phonathons important to Annual

“telemarketing” but this is far from what they are. They allow alumni to reach out to their classmates and reconnect. They allow us to educate our constituents on the importance and purpose of Annual Giving—which is still unknown by many. When people get the call they realize that “one of them” is on the other end spending their time and effort to do something important for the School. I have been doing it now for five years and it’s a wonderful way to give back in a short two hours. And the pizza and camaraderie are great!

mantras I live by when donating my time and resources. The first is to “care” in everything I do for the School. I try my very best to treat the faculty, staff and students as family. The second is to “walk the walk.” If I am going to ask people to help the School, I need to set the example and do the same—stretch as much as I can in time, energy and resources. How do parents exemplify the School’s motto— “Live and Serve”? The parents of North Shore students get it. From the parents who volunteer to build homes in hurricane-stricken New Orleans, to those who have spent countless hours meeting with neighbors on nights and weekends to ensure our efforts to upgrade our Upper School facility happens. I could go on for pages! It is illustrated often from the parents of our kindergartners to the Middle School to the senior parents who think thoughtfully about their children’s experiences. Our parents set excellent examples for our students in how to “Live and Serve.”

Why is full participation in Annual Giving essential to North Shore’s financial stability? While our financial goal is

Why do you volunteer at North Shore? I initially volunteered because I was asked. At the time I felt it was my duty and “my turn.” Was I surprised. From day one, I have never felt better about the time and energy I give to the School. Cliché as it may be, the more time, energy and resources I give to the School, the better I feel. I have volunteered for many organizations and have never felt the depth of satisfaction as I do here. It’s the people, the common and clear goals the School has for the students and the leadership from the top. I encourage everyone to get involved!! You will not be sorry. Above // Grace Flickinger ’12 and Tom Flickinger

always important, participation, to me, is the most important measure for two reasons. First, it illustrates to the faculty, staff, students and to the greater North Shore community that we are a unified group that cares to do the very best for our faculty and students. Whether it is $20 or $20,000, our goal of achieving 100% participation is my ultimate measure. I’m not sure everyone knows that 100% of our faculty and staff participate in Annual Giving! My goal is to see the day when everyone participates in whatever way they are capable of doing. Acorn Annual Report 2009–2010 17

The Benefit Board The Benefit Board’s annual auction party, “A Night at the Shore,” held on February 27, raised more than $320,000. Some 350 guests took a cue from the theme and donned summer apparel and beach attire anticipating warmer days to come. The evening began in the Conant Science Center atrium for cocktails and appetizers, then progressed to the Diller Street Theater for the live auction. Finally, parents, former parents, trustees, alumni, faculty and friends entered the Mac Gym which had been transformed into a seaside getaway complete with palm trees, sailboat and cabana, for dinner, silent and super silent auctions. The funds raised will be used to establish the Benefit Board Supplemental Scholarship Fund to help school families with non-tuition expenses and enable every student to fully participate in the North Shore experience. In addition, the Benefit Board will to continue support of the Curriculum and Teaching Fund grants allowing faculty to conduct research projects and develop curriculum. For more than 26 years, the Benefit Board of North Shore Country Day School has raised funds through an annual auction. These funds are directed to support areas of the School not covered by the annual operating budget. Since 1981, the Benefit Board, formerly the Women’s Board, has raised more than $5 million for North Shore. We are fortunate and grateful to the more than 80 Benefit Board members for their tireless efforts and dedicated support. Our North Shore community greatly appreciates the Benefit Board members for their unending commitment to our students and faculty.
