FOR SUPPORTING OUR RAIDER COMMUNITY!

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL

TOM FLEMMA AND OUR 2023-24 BOARD LEADERSHIP: NICHOLE WILSON, CHAIR; STEPHANIE HENRY, DEVELOPMENT CHAIR; AND SARAH GEIST ROSEN ’86, PRESIDENT OF THE ALUMNI BOARD.

We are grateful for your generous support of our school’s fundraising initiatives:

• Annual Giving, the school’s highest fundraising priority, supports the daily essentials of our JK-12 program.

• The 2024 Benefit for Scholarships provides invaluable assistance to students, ensuring that a North Shore education is accessible to all who are offered admission.

• Centennial Campaign raises money for people, program and place. This past year has focused on Healthy Futures, transforming the Mac Gym into a stateof-the-art athletics and wellness center and strengthening our health and wellness programming.

Your participation demonstrates a strong belief in our school and our mission. Together with our dedicated and talented faculty and staff, we have helped provide opportunities for every student to connect, be challenged, engage and explore.

With this Annual Report, we proudly acknowledge your commitment to “Live and Serve,” and we extend our heartfelt thanks for your impact on our Raider community.

Heritage Society Reflection: Cathy Kleiman Bartholomay ’79 and Bill Bartholomay

“ NSCD boasts a remarkable faculty, talented and curious students, world-class facilities, and a program that continues to engage and inspire students. None of this would be possible without the generosity and support of Raiders far and wide.” — HEAD OF SCHOOL TOM FLEMMA

Q

A&

Trustees Toya Chatman and Strib Koster, chairs of the board finance committee, offer a nuanced perspective on the underlying financial dynamics shaping the school that provides clarity on how endowment funds bolster NSCD's mission, the indispensable nature of annual giving, the balance between tuition and giving, and the strategic financial planning that ensures NSCD's legacy will endure for generations to come.

GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF THE CURRENT FINANCIAL STATUS OF OUR SCHOOL. WHAT ARE THE FINANCIAL STRENGTHS AND CHALLENGES?

Overall, NSCD is in good financial shape, supported by our $40 million endowment and our consistently strong level of giving. That being said, given the challenges all secondary schools are feeling today in terms of changing demographics, the continued inflationary environment and the continued

need to expand and adjust our programs to meet the expectations of our parents and students, the school’s administration recently has implemented an exercise to enhance our expense discipline while looking for continued ways to sustain and increase enrollment and other forms of ancillary revenue. The board of trustees is fully engaged with the administration and singularly focused on ensuring that the measures implemented have little to no impact on our ability to deliver on our stated mission.

“ NSCD offers a firstclass education for our children in a more intimate, communitybased environment. The ability to actively participate and play sports of any kind also is something that makes NSCD unique and attractive.”

— STRIB KOSTER, TRUSTEE AND PARENT OF STRIBLING ’28 AND BENNETT ’27

WHAT IS THE ENDOWMENT AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

The school’s endowment is effectively a segregated pool of funds or assets used to provide ongoing financial support to NSCD. It is overseen and managed by a separate foundation that invests these assets with the mandate that some designated portion of the investment income earned annually from the endowment will be used to support our operations. The balance of

any income generated above the draw the school receives is directed back into the endowment to help support further growth and appreciation. The foundation board consists of former NSCD trustees, alumni and parents who work closely with our outside financial advisors to ensure we are getting an appropriate return on our assets.

PARENTS ALREADY PAY TUITION. WHY IS ANNUAL GIVING NECESSARY?

As with any secondary school of its kind, tuition revenues at NSCD do not fully cover the cost of educating our students. In simple terms, the cost of providing a first-class education at NSCD is simply more expensive than what we can competitively charge for tuition. The cost of hiring high-quality faculty, improving and maintaining our physical campus, providing a wide range of academic and athletic programming for our students, etc. is simply not cheap. That is why we are dependent not only on the annual draw from our endowment but equally as important, on the generosity of the entire NSCD community through annual giving to maintain a balanced operating budget.

HOW DOES THE BOARD ASSESS THE APPROPRIATE BALANCE BETWEEN TUITION RATES AND RELIANCE ON GIVING?

The board discusses annually the appropriate level of tuition in light of the current operating budget for the upcoming school year. Tuition is designed to cover our largest expense and most valuable asset, the salaries and benefits of our amazing faculty and staff. At the same time, the board of trustees and administration take into consideration our expectations for other revenue items, such as annual giving, as well as historical changes in annual tuition

and benchmarking information from our cohort institutions in establishing their ultimate recommendations.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES THE SCHOOL'S STRATEGIC PLANNING INFLUENCE FINANCIAL DECISION-MAKING?

The strategic plan is the roadmap from which we determine the various programs we need to have in place and develop to deliver on our mission. As a board, we are not only tasked with actively supporting and promoting our mission, vision and strategic goals, but also acting as fiduciaries to ensure the sound financial management and sustainability of the school. To that end, we have been highly engaged in the past several years in ensuring that each and every one of us has full financial transparency as it relates to the school’s operations, and in turn, that we collectively are making sound financial decisions that support our strategic plan without putting NSCD in any financial jeopardy.

WHAT MEASURES ARE IN PLACE TO ENSURE THE FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY OF THE SCHOOL FOR THE FUTURE?

Over the past several years, the board of trustees and the school’s administration have worked hard to establish a financial framework and long-range plan to support the long-term sustainability of NSCD. This plan has included a number of cost-cutting initiatives designed to ask ourselves how we can do things better and more efficiently. Many of these initiatives may not be readily visible from the outside, but they have at times forced us to make hard choices — all with the goal of not impacting our current program and what makes us unique as a school.

A MOSAIC OF EXPERIENCES

Thanks to the generous support of NSCD donors, Evelyn Gonzalez '18 had the opportunity to experience all the benefits of a North Shore education.

IMPACT Generational

“ THE SCHOLARSHIP EVELYN GONZALEZ ’18 RECEIVED CHANGED NOT ONLY THE COURSE OF HER LIFE BUT HER FAMILY’S AS WELL

When I think about my education, I think of a mosaic of experiences — each piece contributing to my growth,” said Evelyn Gonzalez ’18. “Challenging academics developed my intellect. I met some of my closest friends by playing sports, and extracurriculars helped me explore my passions. But for me, scholarship was the most important piece.”

If it hadn’t been for the scholarship Evelyn received, attending North Shore Country Day would not have been within her grasp. Before coming to NSCD as a freshman, Evelyn, the eldest of three girls, lived in North Chicago with her family and attended LEARN 6 Charter School for seventh and eighth grade. Her older cousin had received a scholarship to a private high school, so when it came time for Evelyn to think about where she wanted to go for ninth grade, she knew there were opportunities beyond her local public school.

With the encouragement of Kelly Tyson, who was the principal of LEARN 6 at the time as

well as an NSCD trustee, Evelyn applied to North Shore Country Day. She knew that the only way she would be able to attend was if she received a substantial amount of financial aid.

“I remember waiting to hear if I had received a scholarship and if so, how much, because I knew that would be the deciding factor,” Evelyn explained. “When I found out North Shore was offering me a full scholarship, I remember being really excited to go home and explain to my parents that I have the option to go somewhere really, really good, and that I just needed their permission. ‘You don't have to worry about a thing,’ I told them. And there was just this sense of overwhelming joy.”

While it was an exciting prospect for Evelyn, it still required a leap of faith. Evelyn would be one of the first students from LEARN 6 to attend North Shore. Her mother, Maria, conferred with Kelly and shared that among her many worries was the train ride from North Chicago to Winnetka. It was a long trip: Would she be okay? Kelly assured her that she would, and Evelyn was determined.

“All students deserve to have access to not only a basic education but an exceptional education.”
— Kelly Tyson former principal of LEARN 6 Charter School and NSCD trustee

“All students deserve to have access to not only a basic education but an exceptional education, with all the resources and experiences that other children have,” Kelly said. “Scholarship is not just tuition. We want to make sure that if we accept a student and the student comes, that they can participate in every part of the school community.”

Evelyn was nervous and excited. Even though she had been accepted, she worried she was not prepared and that it would be too hard. She was also looking forward to something new and was excited to embark upon an adventure.

“Receiving a scholarship to North Shore opened my world to something I didn't know existed,” Evelyn said. “I’ve had experiences that nobody else in my community has, simply because I took that step forward and applied for a scholarship. And those experiences opened doors, both professionally and personally. It’s changed who I am as a person and has helped me come out of my shell. I’ve transformed 10 times over from the girl who walked through that door for a shadow visit in eighth grade.”

As a student, Evelyn was challenged by the coursework, but that pushed her to explore more deeply and to try new things. That spirit of self-discovery and exploration defined her upper school experience. There was always an opportunity to try something new every semester — a new class, a new sport, a new part in a play. One of those classes she took in high school very well might have changed the course of her future.

Evelyn always had been interested in math, and for a long time she expected to become a math teacher. But then she took a biology class that opened her eyes to a whole new career path.

“Being able to dive deep into the different aspects of a science course made me realize that there's so much more to study. Our teacher would take a simple question and turn it into a project. She would have us explore all the possibilities and teach each other. We felt like actual scientists, and that made me love research and want to know even more.”

After graduating from NSCD, Evelyn went on to get her bachelor’s degree in biopsychology from Tufts, a world-class private research university outside of Boston. Now she’s applying to physician’s assistant programs. Because of the scholarship she received as an eighth grader, she has been able to encourage her siblings and other family members to pursue a better education. Her middle sister just graduated from a private university, and the youngest currently is enrolled at NSCD. She also has two cousins who currently attend North Shore and is hopeful that another will attend down the road.

“I've been able to advocate for my family and those I care about,” she said. “Receiving a scholarship doesn't just touch your life; it touches generations.”

THE BENEFIT 2024

This year’s Benefit for Scholarships raised more than $440,000 for student scholarships and supplemental support. All donors to the Benefit, including the Host Committee, are included in the donor listings starting on page 12.

CATHY BILL A Story of Heritage:&

WE COME FROM A LONG LINE OF RAIDERS. BETWEEN THE TWO OF US, WE’VE HAD MORE THAN A DOZEN IMMEDIATE AND EXTENDED FAMILY MEMBERS GRADUATE FROM NSCD — GOING AS FAR BACK AS 1941. SO NATURALLY BILL AND I THOUGHT OF THE SCHOOL WHEN IT CAME TO ESTATE PLANNING.

I graduated from NSCD in 1979, followed by my two younger brothers. And although Bill is not technically a Raider himself, his dad, aunt, uncle, niece and five cousins all attended the school. Most recently, our youngest, Charley Bell, graduated in 2021, and he flourished during his time at NSCD, as did the rest of our family.

Living near campus for the past 20 years, and especially having had Charley recently attend, has given us a front row seat to the many ways North Shore continues to thoughtfully deliver on everything it does so well: education, community, the arts, inclusiveness, creativity and service, to name just a few. Certainly, another decisive and motivating factor for us is the school’s direction, faculty, staff and leadership, with a special nod to Head of School Tom Flemma. In a word, INSPIRING.

Bill is always quick to say that his main motivator in supporting NSCD via estate planning is both a combination of what he believes to be the long-term vision of the leadership, as well as my long-time love for and involvement with the school. (So sweet!)

For starters, I’ve been my class rep pretty much forever, served on the Alumni Board, co-chaired a Scholarship Benefit, co-founded Alumni Live and Serve Day, and this fall I will co-chair our class reunion and chair our reunion annual giving program. Bill is always right there front and center volunteering and maintaining generous support. In my book, he has definitely earned honorary Raider status — and the right to wear all the Raider gear he wants.

We feel fortunate to see NSCD up close and in action, and to be part of the school community in so many ways, over so many years. While we proudly support every current initiative that we can, including Annual Giving, the campaign, the Benefit and more, we also wanted to go further and support the future school. As the competitive educational landscape intensifies, differentiators will become increasingly important in framing NSCD’s value for its students and their parents. Our hope is that these funds will be utilized by NSCD to further its competitive edge in attracting the highest caliber students and faculty.

Estate planning is our vote of confidence in NSCD today — and tomorrow.

CAMPAIGN UPDATE

We are deeply thankful for the remarkable families in our community who have directed their philanthropic support to NSCD students and invested in the North Shore Forevermore Campaign. Thanks to this generous group of donors, we have made significant strides in every aspect of school life.

We are incredibly close to our goal and have spent the past year focusing on Healthy Futures to transform our Mac Gym and build onto our health and wellness programming.

THANK YOU!

We truly could not do it without your partnership.
