ANNUAL GIVING

MAKES EVERY DAY HAPPEN

“North Shore was and still is a very special place—it gave me opportunities and required me to do things that I would never have done at a larger school. Both the faculty and my classmates made me part of a community committed to learning and serving.” Cece Ewen Durbin ’67 Annual Giving directly impacts many segments of North Shore— from academics to athletics, and arts to service; keeping class sizes small; providing art supplies; and transportation to athletic events. Annual Giving is essential— tuition only covers approximately 70% of the cost of educating a student. Each gift to Annual Giving helps make up the difference.

Reflection

“Thank you to each and every one of you— students, parents, teachers, staff, former faculty, coaches, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, and friends.” One of my highlights each year is awarding the diplomas to the graduating seniors at Commencement. As a representative of the faculty and by the authority granted to me as Head of School by the Board of Trustees, I hand a diploma to and shake the hand of each graduate. Knowing each student and each student’s story—knowing the class and the dynamics of the class—I am always struck by the fact that I am, indeed, very privileged to be working in schools. In schools, success is measured by student outcomes—and at North Shore those outcomes make us all very proud.

Above // George Eisner ’12 and Tom Doar

Among those who work closely with our Upper School students are our college counselors. Each year, they get to know each individual student in the junior class, helping each gain an understanding of themselves—their identity, strengths and weakness, their goals and aspirations. Once the students learn to embrace this opportunity for self-analysis and self-discovery, the challenge then shifts to the telling of one’s story. It is not just who you are and who you might become, but developing the skill to share your vision of yourself with others, and ultimately, with colleges. It should come as no surprise that North Shore students typically have a high degree of self-awareness and are, as they grow and mature, very skillful in sharing their own stories. This ability typically leads to mature and thoughtful young adults, who have exciting college and/or life options.

4 Acorn Annual Report 2011–2012

As we close every year and take inventory of all those who have contributed meaningfully to the North Shore experience, I wish I could magically recreate the graduation ritual to personally thank—and shake the hand—of each and every person who has helped support our students and the School. You have all contributed; you have all made a difference. A difference that matters. How do I know? This year, our Annual Report reviews the year through the lens of our “Four Hallmarks”—those key attributes that set North Shore apart from other schools in the area. We have collected quotes from students, teachers, administrators, parents and alumni that tell our School story in first person. Not only has it been a successful year for our students and teachers, but also for North Shore as a whole. We opened our 92nd year with record enrollment of 512. The first year in our redesigned Upper School was better than we could ever have imagined. We saw many firsts in our athletics programs including our first state championship ever, thanks to our golf team. So, once again, thank you. Thank you to each and every one of you—students, parents, teachers, staff, former faculty, coaches, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents and friends. Without the support of our donors, our story would not be the same.

Annual Giving directly impacts learning in the classroom—from providing science equipment and technology tools to financial aid for students. North Shore is small compared to other local schools, so students benefit from smaller classes that promote collaborative, personal learning experiences. “Science in Lower School is ‘smaller by design.’ Students visit the science lab in small groups. Investigations in the classroom are always collaborative. Not only is small-group learning developmentally appropriate, it is reminiscent of how scientists actually do their work. We emphasize the scientific process over scientific facts in the Lower School science lab. Students are not just witnesses to science; they are doing science.” Annie Collins, Lower School Science Teacher

“I focus on building a solid foundation and keeping students interested and motivated in learning. The benefit of teaching at a small school like North Shore is having the flexibility to work with the administration in designing the curriculum, choosing content to study and planning activities.” Di Li, Upper School Mandarin Teacher Left: A Mandarin cooking lesson with Teacher Di Li, Zach Nelson ’15 and Floris Hondmann ’13.

SMALL

“North Shore’s small class sizes create a rich learning environment. Greater access to technology allows for meeting individual needs and personalization of projects. Through technology, students can learn and collaborate not only with their peers at North Shore, but also globally.” Lane Young, JK–12 Academic Technology Coordinator Above: Thomas Gavin ’23 works on a project during Library/Tech class.

“Language teachers at North Shore provide a comfortable and positive class environment. Our renovated Upper School building makes it possible to create individualized, creative and flexible space for developing foreign language proficiency.” Carmen Gomez-Fiegl, Upper School Language Department Head; Spanish Teacher; Faculty Annual Giving Representative Below: English students have a discussion in one of the new Upper School classrooms.

Providing a challenging, well-rounded education with a global perspective is key to our academic program. Annual Giving supports faculty salaries and learning enrichment opportunities. “ The 8th Grade Grant Project is about having students become invested in their own ideas. They research the assets and needs of a community, and follow through on an idea to improve the quality of life. Students really care about the big picture, which is making the world a better place, and learn that it’s working on the details that can turn the dream into a reality. Having the community involved shows students that caring about important global issues crosses generations.” Dana Specht, Middle School Humanities Teacher, Faculty Annual Giving Representative Left: Members of the North Shore community review 8th grade Grant Projects.

RIGOROUS, RELEVANT

ACADEMICS “Students choose current issues to study they are passionate about, learn about influential people who are creating change and share their learning with classmates and teachers.” Lynsey Wollin-Casey, Upper School Assistant Head; Upper School French Teacher Left: Owen Zinaman ’05 and Charlie Morris ’12

“I am making history and literature come alive for students, prompting students to think about complex issues in different ways, to ask questions, develop their cultural competence and tolerance for other peoples, and teach them lessons they will use as future leaders of our global society.” Christina Coons, 7th Grade Humanities Teacher; Coach Right: Owen Hiland ’18, Howard Jessen and Jack Scullion ’17 build a tower for Science Olympiad.

“Social studies units are designed for students to learn from a global perspective. For example, 1st graders study our local community and a community in Indonesia comparing things we have in common and ways we are different. High expectations and an emphasis on strong writing skills provide opportunities for students to express sophisticated thoughts about what they learn across the curriculum.” Cristy Herndon, 1st Grade Teacher Left: Luke Avedisian ’23, Chloe Watrous ’23, Christy Herndon, Buckley Oelerich ’23 and Evan Acorn Fortier ’23 Report 2011–2012 9 Annual

“Drama helps develop critical-thinking skills, focus, cultural awareness, expression and communication. At North Shore, students learn how to take a risk in front of their peers in a comfortable and respectful learning environment. Drama is an outlet to express personal opinions, problems and solutions. These opportunities help students gain self confidence, explore the natural human experience through life situations, and find ways to mediate and effect change. Through drama, our students develop their own voice, mind and body and become informed, unique citizens.” Julia Macholl, Upper School Drama Teacher, 8th Grade Drama Teacher Right: Ethan Ramaly ’17 performs with the chorus. Below: Nick Potter ’22

PARTICIPATION REQUIRED “Providing a meaningful context for Service Learning makes the work relevant to children’s lives. As part of our theme on Communication, students were taught about hearing and hearing loss. As a result, they decided to raise money for the Starkey Hearing Foundation that provides hearing aids to children in Asia and Africa.” Pam Whalley, Lower School Head Right: Fritz Souder ’18 attends a 2nd grade fundraiser for Barnswallow, a refuge for injured and orphaned birds.

“Sports teach me to work hard and never give up on accomplishing a goal.” Henry Young ’16

“ The Boys’ Basketball team finished in 4th place in the IHSA state tournament, which was our first basketball state finish in the School’s history. Four players were named to the All State roster and Head Coach Rashid Smith was voted Independent School League Coach of the Year. Raider fans earned a Do What’s Right! State Final Sportsmanship Award for the high standard of sportsmanship displayed during regular season and post-season play.” Patrick McHugh, Athletic Director Left: Basketball fans cheer on the Raiders.

“I love the whole buddy system experience at North Shore because I remember being in JK and SK and looking up to my buddies so much. And, as a Senior, seeing my buddy Isabelle was one of my favorite parts of my week.” Jeannie Peters ’12, 2012 Alumni Class Co-Representative Left: Buddies Leif Steele ’24, Jake Kann ’12 and Hudson Bluhm ’24 at the Royal Breakfast.

KNOWN “Our Interim program creates wonderful opportunities for students to learn through direct experience and to contribute to a collaborative process with other students and teachers that builds close relationships. The program celebrates genuine interest, offers an opportunity to contribute, and provides exposure to new experiences.” Dave Potter, Upper School Head

“ There are innumerable reasons why I love North Shore. However, if I had to choose one that I valued the most, it would be the relationships I have formed with people at this school. Even though I have become fully independent over the past four years, as most students do, I constantly feel the presence of all my mentors—coaches, teachers, college counselors and administrators—ready to step in with support when I need it.” Kim Kahnweiler ’12 Left: Kim Kahnweiler ’12, Tess Weiner ’12 and Rebecca Reategui ’12

“In the 8th Grade Identity Project, students demonstrate appreciation for their individuality, celebrating their passions such as art, gymnastics, fencing, competitive swimming and travel.” Susan Schinleber, 8th and 9th Grade English Teacher, Upper School French Teacher Below: Adam Mangana, Haniya Ghazi ’18, Nina Valenti ’18, Alicetierney Prindiville-Porto ’18 and Chris Mendes ’16 attend an ice cream social.

Profiles Susan Bondurant Board Chair As the new Board Chair, how has the North Shore community supported you? It’s hard

to believe I am finishing my first year as Board Chair; it’s flown by and has been incredibly rewarding. The transition to Board Chair has been smooth due to the strong foundation, planning and guidance I’ve received from outgoing Board Chair Tom Formolo. The responsiveness, commitment and long-term leadership of Head of School Tom Doar, has ensured an effective working relationship. I stay in touch with past Board leaders who offer wisdom, support and knowledge on the School’s history and culture. We have a solid Board structure and leadership. Finally, I enjoy the ongoing contact with our parents, faculty and alumni. Their engagement with me and North Shore is reaffirming. What is the main focus of the Strategic Plan? We embark on the next Strategic Plan from a position of strength following a period of strong enrollment growth, program expansion and campus modernization. This plan lays a course that reflects our enduring principles while employing innovations and opportunities in a changing educational landscape. Areas of emphasis include: optimizing the student experience; faculty and teaching excellence; curricular process and innovation, including special focus on science, Global education and 21st century skills; bringing “Live and Serve” to life through experiential education and meaningful partnerships locally and globally; and continued focus on facilities upgrades including our arts facilities and athletic fields. Completion of this plan

Shore and help meet North Shore’s goals?

Whether it has been as a room parent, on a service field trip with students, in the lunch room, or as a Board member and leader, I have found volunteering at North Shore hugely fulfilling and rewarding. It’s compelling to see what a difference one can make in a small place, but it is the relationships I have formed with talented faculty and staff, engaged families and dedicated current and former Board members, that have brought the North Shore experience to life for me.

Alumni can stay connected by attending alumni and school events and by advocating for North Shore with alumni, friends and colleagues. Volunteering for a Morning Ex, Interim Week or in the classroom are all great ways to support North Shore. Parents should take advantage of Parents’ Association coffees to meet school personnel and be involved; there are numerous opportunities with the Parents’ Association and Benefit Board to help in small and large roles. I also believe it takes all in our community to invest in ensuring that North Shore’s momentum continues. Participating in Annual Giving, the Benefit Board Auction and the Capital Campaign

I give back to North Shore because the School has positively influenced my children’s education. It’s a part of who they are and who they will become. As a volunteer, I am rewarded every time I am on campus. It’s electrifying! The School also needs people like you—volunteers help make every day happen. I promise you will be glad you did it.

giving priority at North Shore and all independent schools. Annual Giving is essential to meet our day-to-day operational needs. Tuition only covers about 70% of the cost of educating a student at North Shore and Annual Giving helps make up the difference. The Capital Campaign provides for the long-term goals of the School and allows it to grow as a leading educational institution. It supports what the School refers to as the investment in People, Program and Place. The Benefit Board Auction supports areas of the School not covered by the annual operating budget. How do you see the impact of strong Annual Giving participation at North Shore? Our

goal this year was $1,200,000. Thank you to everyone who helped North Shore to exceed this goal! This is really a remarkable number. North Shore is a community that understands the importance of participation and giving in a meaningful way. With five children at North Shore this past year, I saw the impact of the North Shore education every day. Our small class sizes enhance classroom learning and every child is truly known. All of this is possible due to the contributions of so many to Annual Giving. Every year it is heartening to see the number of families, faculty and alumni who contribute.

What part of your North Shore experience do you most appreciate? I appreciate the

strong commitment of the North Shore community that supports the School in a variety of ways. A special thank you goes to our Alumni Board President, Courtney Williams ’88, for her guidance; Vice President Hugh Bowles ’58 for his leadership during meetings; and Alumni Decade Representative Chair Chris Charnas ’83 for his involvement in helping alumni stay connected. Additionally, we appreciate the constant support and dedication of our Annual Giving Parent Grade Representatives and our Phonathon volunteers for reaching out to our North Shore community. Finally, thanks to our outstanding faculty and staff who have not only achieved 100% participation in Annual Giving, but also give 200% of their energy to educate and help students grow into incredible young adults.

The Benefit Board The Benefit Board’s annual Auction and party, “The Purple Wave,” was held on February 25, 2012. It was led by Auction Chair Diane Chandler-Simon and President Laura Bergman. More than $220,000 was raised to support the Benefit Board Supplemental Scholarship Fund to help school families with non-tuition expenses and enable every student to fully participate in the North Shore experience; Parents Association grants for faculty and staff; and technology equipment for the School. Over 300 guests attended the evening beginning with cocktails, appetizers and a silent auction. Live auction items included a Superbowl package, Blackhawks themed painting signed by Rocky Wirtz ’71, and an Idaho river raft trip. The evening continued with dinner and dancing. Since 1981, the Benefit Board, formerly the Women’s Board, has raised more than $5 million through their annual auction to support areas of the School not covered by the annual operating budget. Our North Shore community greatly appreciates the Benefit Board members for their unending commitment to our students and faculty. Executive Committee

CAMPAIGN DONORS Thank You Campaign Donors Our thanks to all who have supported the Campaign. We encourage all to participate and acknowledge those who have generously committed to this initiative. Many have responded to the exciting Challenge Match set forth by the Jaharis Family Foundation: for every $4 given, they will match $1 up to $1,000,000. Gifts to the Campaign are above and beyond the School’s first priority of Annual Giving, which supports the day-to-day operations of the School. The following donors have committed to the Campaign as of July 31, 2012. Thank you! Anonymous (6) Anonymous, in honor of Caroline Howard McCarty Mr. Philip Airey Mr. and Mrs. Russell Alberding
