Citizen Generation’s work is relevant, and it works. It’s also fun, which is an incredible added bonus.
Catching Up With Citizen Generation A look at the organization’s recent summer programs and some upcoming opportunities for fun philanthropy by Taylor Davis
May CharityBash
On May 17, Citizen Generation followers got a special treat at the May installment of CharityBash. Three of Austin’s favorite bands – Nelo, English Teeth and Black Pistol Fire – provided the perfect wind-down at the end of the week. Drinks by Deep Eddy Vodka and the signature popsicles of GoodPop kept everyone refreshed and cool while they enjoyed the bands presented by the Live Vibe Collective and the upper deck of the country-cool venue Rattle Inn. Cornucopia provided popcorn for snacking in some of its most innovative and tasty flavors like dill pickle, salted margarita and amaretto-almond. The $10 entrance fee not only got attendees in on all the fun, but benefitted KLRU-TV, Austin’s own nonprofit PBS television station that is known for producing some of the city’s most treasured gems, including Austin City Limits. Many patrons opted to donate $20 to receive a KLRU T-shirt or $40 to snag a swag bag full of local gift cards and products. With the great turnout, we raised $4,815, with
8

proceeds benefiting KLRU, which will help continue to provide educational and entertaining arts programs for those in Austin and beyond. A big thank-you to all of our community supporters and additional event sponsors TRIBEZA, Do512, ZICO Coconut Water, Jonathan Garza Photography, Genesis Escobar Photography and Luped Media. Stay tuned to our website and social media outlets for our upcoming CharityBash details, including our August CharityBash benefiting BookSpring and our Fourth Annual CharityBash Live Auction on Nov. 9, which is sure to be chock-full of entertainment and amazing date packages.
June CharityVolunteers
What sets Citizen Generation’s CharityVolunteers apart? They don’t mind the heat. On Saturday, June 9, 50 of our dedicated favorites spread out across Austin to put in some much-needed volunteer hours. The three groups spent the morning at Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary, the Multicultural Refu-
gee Coalition and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Whether they were cleaning habitats and preparing feedings, repairing and updating soccer goals or organizing supplies and making inspirational signs for an upcoming event, our volunteers had a more than worthwhile time. As always, volunteers were stocked with CharityVolunteers T-shirts, beverages and breakfast tacos to power them through the morning and keep them looking sharp. Don’t forget to check in soon for information on the winter CharityVolunteers, when temperatures are sure to be much cooler.
A new addition
In May, I was honored and thrilled to come on board with Citizen Generation fulltime as the development director. After interning for the company since May 2011 and finishing up graduate school at A&M (don’t hold it against me, Longhorns), I knew I would compare any opportunity to my incredible experience with this organization. Over the past year, I was lucky to be part of the expansion from CharityBash to Citizen Generation and apply what I’d been learning in the classroom while growing both professionally and personally. As someone who’s been passionate about and involved in philanthropy since the age of 9, I can attest that Citizen Generation’s work is relevant, and it works. In addition, it’s fun, which is an incredible added bonus. As we continue to develop and expand upon our current programs CharityBash, CharityVolunteers and CharityLadies, I hope you all will join us in our quest to make giving back to Austin part of our regular lives.

Those Who Can, Do Those Who Cannot, Bully A parent’s guide for warning signs of the potentially devastating problem in our schools and on the Internet by Jane Flynn
Bullying is an enormous problem facing our youth. Its emotional and psychological effects can be devastating. Bullycide, suicide that can be attributed to having been bullied, is the leading cause of death in children under age 14. The current bullying research is rather sobering: • An estimated 160,000 children miss school each day due to the fear of being bullied. • Fifty-six percent of students have personally
12
NSIDE AUSTIN MD
witnessed some type of bullying at school. • Seven percent of students report incidents of bullying as a problem at their school. • The CIA reports that two-thirds of recent school shootings are committed by victims of bullying. And, as all the recent news stories can attest to, gay and lesbian youth are especially vulnerable. • Eighty-six percent of LGBT students reported
harassment at school. • Nearly nine out of 10 LGBT youth reported being verbally harassed at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation. • Forty-four percent reported being physically harassed. • Twenty-two percent reported being assaulted. Nearly 61 percent who experienced harassment never reported the incident to the school.
Bullying comes in many forms: physical (kicking, hitting), verbal (name calling, teasing) and indirect (cyber bullying via text messages, email, chat rooms and instant messages). And unfortunately, too many kids who are being bullied suffer in unnecessary silence. Because they fear retaliation, these young victims refuse to talk to their parents, their teachers or anyone else about their situation. So, as a parent, what should you look for if you feel your child is possibly a victim of bullying? Ask yourself, does he or she: 1. Come home from school with torn clothing or a damaged backpack? 2. Have cuts and scratches, but can’t give or refuses to give a reason for how they received them? 3. Appear afraid or reluctant to go to school? 4. Talk about suicide? 5. Have trouble sleeping? 6. Lose interest in schoolwork and experience falling grades? 7. Appear sad or depressed, or show unexpected mood shifts, irritability and sudden outbursts of temper? 8. Consistently ask for money from you (to meet the bully’s demands)? 9. Seem socially isolated? 10. Have a change in eating habits?
Bullycide is the leading cause of death in children under age 14. When parents feel their child is being bullied, it is imperative to keep the lines of communication open. Parents need to talk with their child often and honestly without judging them. And kids who have an open and trusting relationship with their parents and feel safe to talk to them are less likely to take part in bullying, as well. In this digital technology era, texting, Facebook, Instagram, Google Chat and FaceChat are essentially the “norm” in how youngsters communicate. Cyberspace allows bullies to continue their torture well after the school bell has sounded. As a result, the victims know no reprieve. But parents can play an active role in helping prevent the abuse of technology by their youngsters. Consider the following: 1. Internet safety: Teach your child how to safely browse the Web, even if your child is very young – as young as kindergarten. 2. Make it public: Keep your computer in an open and relatively public area of your home such as a family room or kitchen. Determine how much online time your child can have and stick to it. 3. Discourage retaliation: Once something is said online, it can never be taken back. Make sure your teen treats peers with respect both on and offline. Written words are often misinterpreted. Talking it out can prevent making an impulsive (and often regrettable) decision to post a nasty message on Facebook. Pause before you post! 4. Don’t be rash: Parents often have the impulse to take the computer away after a troubling online incident, but resist the urge to make a snap decision. Instead, listen to your child, without judgment, about what’s going on. How much bullying takes place in our schools and other youth environments depends on the role that committed adults will play in their schools, their families and their communities. Correcting these behaviors before they get out of control will keep your child safe and allow parents to get a good night’s sleep.

Modern Surgery, Classic Beauty
A glimpse into the innovative techniques of Drs. Mahlon Kerr and Amy Bekanich, two physicians who are dedicated to making plastic surgery accessible to everyone at Synergy Plastic Surgery by Jody Joseph Marmel
Dr. Mahlon Kerr opened his practice two years ago in Round Rock. As the doors opened, the patient population grew very quickly. “I brought Dr. Amy Bekanich on board not only because we were doing so well,” Kerr explains. “She has a lot of experience and knowledge in breast reconstruction and is an excellent plastic surgeon.” Having a male and a female surgeon at Synergy Plastic Surgery makes the practice unique. And it certainly gives the patients a myriad of choices with these remarkable board-certified plastic surgeons. They offer a procedure that is new in the medical field. It is called BRAVA + AFT (autologous fat transfer), and it is different from traditional breast reconstructive surgery. The following Q&A explains the practice and philosophy. It is sure to pique your interest, so keep in
14
NSIDE AUSTIN MD
mind that in the next issue of NSIDE Austin, these talented surgeons will reveal and explain even more. Q: How is the BRAVA + AFT procedure different from traditional breast reconstructive surgery? A: The BRAVA + AFT procedure is different in that it essentially regenerates a new breast using entirely a patient’s own fat while performing minimally invasive techniques. There are no additional incisions made beyond the original mastectomy incisions. All subsequent procedures are outpatient based and use no scalpels. There are only small needle holes made to both obtain the fat through standard liposuction and to inject the fat into the new breast. The end result is a breast that is entirely natural, sensate and soft, without the need of an implant. Unlike with implant-based reconstruction, there are no antici-
pated subsequent surgeries for implant malposition, capsular contracture or implant rupture. Likewise, while flap-based reconstruction does use a patient’s own tissues to recreate a new breast, BRAVA + AFT reconstruction does not require a lengthy, intense surgery that will really impact the patient’s life for a few weeks. All BRAVA + AFT reconstruction is performed as an outpatient and is minimally invasive. Q: What should you look for when deciding on a plastic surgeon? A: When looking for a plastic surgeon, it is important to examine their credentials and clarify if they are board certified. A “true” board-certified plastic surgeon is someone who has completed a fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery after having already gone through many years of surgical
training, and has undergone rigorous testing and examination to become board certified. Beyond that, it may be important for a patient to seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon who has obtained even further training in a particular subspecialty. It is important that a patient feels comfortable with their surgeon. They should feel free to communicate with their surgeon and not feel judged or pushed into a procedure. When performed by a qualified surgeon, plastic surgery is a safe way for people to make positive changes in their lives. Q: What is the most common plastic surgery procedure? A: Breast augmentation is the most common procedure performed in the United States, followed closely by liposuction. At Synergy Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is the most common procedure we perform. Together, we perform multiple breast augmentation surgeries each week, and we are one of the highest-volume providers of this procedure in the Austin area. Our breast augmentation procedures include implants made in Dallas, Texas, by the FDA-approved Mentor Corporation, the safety of a local hospital and anesthesia provided by board-certified anesthesiologists. Because of our volume, we are able to offer this package starting at $3,999, which is the best value in Central Texas. Q: What are the most common areas for liposuction? A: The abdominal and leg area in women and the abdomen and chest in men. Liposuction is used to remove stubborn fat deposits from these or any area on the body that is bothersome. It typically takes less than an hour per area and may not require general anesthesia. The procedure is performed via incisions, which are extremely small, and really helps with the shape and contour of the body. This results in patients getting the best shape possible. Liposuction is the second most common plastic surgery procedure performed in the United States after breast augmentation surgery. Q: What is a mini facelift, and how long does it last? A: A mini facelift is a facelift that keeps all the incisions in front of the ear and takes only a few hours to complete. Traditional facelifts involve more extensive incisions and surgery that lifts skin in multiple areas, including in front of and behind the ears and into the neck. During the procedure, excess skin is removed and the underlying layers of the face are tightened with sutures. Liposuction is usually performed in the neck rather than extensive neck surgery. A mini facelift is a perfect way to return volume to the cheek area and improve the appearance of jowls and smile lines. The surgery takes about a week to recover from and is done as an outpatient. The results are expected to last 10 years or more in most patients, depending on genetics and time spent in the sun. Q: What is a mommy makeover? A: A mommy makeover is a combination of procedures designed to give a mother her pre-baby shape back or make her body better than it was even before giving birth. Typically, a mommy makeover involves some type of breast procedure such as breast augmentation, breast reduction and/or a breast lift. An abdominal procedure such as a tummy tuck or liposuction is usually included in the makeover. By combining procedures, we are able to dramatically change the body’s contour and shape and limit downtime to a single recovery time. Future plans include expanding into the Austin area. Kerr and Bekanich are looking further down the road. “We plan to expand beyond Austin and be a brand that you can trust. We want to make plastic surgery accessible to everyone.”
Cancer can be devastating. Treatment doesn’t have to be. No pain. No incision. No hospital stay. The CyberKnife is revolutionary technology in the fight against cancer. It treats tumors and lesions throughout the body by focusing pinpoint beams of radiation that destroy the cancerous cells without affecting the surrounding healthy tissue. For you, it means an outpatient procedure that requires five treatments or fewer with no pain. You can then focus on what’s most important – living your life. Although many believe Ashiatsu can be more effective than traditional deep-tissue massage, Ashiatsu still emphasizes standard massage fundamentals and anatomy.
Finding Harmony Relieve your stress and tension with a higher-pressure, deepertissue Ashiatsu massage. by Ashley M. Halligan photography by Phillip Leach

NSIDE AUSTIN MD
Ashiatsu, an ancient Oriental treatment, is becoming a popular choice at locally owned Massage Harmony. In Japanese, ashi translates to “foot,” and atsu means “pressure,” meaning that this particular massage treatment is literally that: a full-body massage with none other than the therapist’s feet. For those who’ve had the pleasure of a traditional deep-tissue massage, perhaps this seems strange. And perhaps in the Western world, it is a bit unusual. But quickly growing in popularity, its deep-tissue healing and exotic flare is bringing guests back for regular Ashiatsu treatments. A tapestry-draped table is the focal point of a rich, plum-hued room, with the two bars expanding from the ceiling in alignment with the massage table. Lying facedown on the heated table, the massage begins. If this is your first time, you may be slightly taken aback by the nearly disorienting, high-pressure kneads of the therapist’s feet as she dances over and into your muscles, working out deep knots with a grace that seemingly combines dance and yoga, collaborating it into an unforgettable massage experience. There are moments when adjusting to the idea that there are, in fact, feet massaging you rather than hands is almost otherworldly, particularly when working the tight crevices of your neck and shoulders. But once you’ve acclimated to the thought of
feet performing their healing motions, the high-intensity massage begins to unravel your deepest tensions. Ashiatsu allows for a higher-pressure, deeper-tissue massage that many believe can be more effective than traditional deep-tissue massage, though it still emphasizes standard massage fundamentals and anatomy. The bars provide balance and stability for the therapist, where pressure can be fully controlled and distributed along your body’s muscles. My first Ashiatsu experience followed a long Monday at the office. I left the appointment relaxed and with a noticeably less tense posture. On Tuesday morning, my upper back, neck and shoulders (where I tend to hold most of my tension) carried a soreness I can only describe as “it hurts so good” (John Cougar Mellencamp). By Wednesday, I was considerably spared of the common tensions and tightness that accompany me at my desk. With a single treatment, I can see how ongoing Ashiatsu therapy can be highly beneficial and healing to our stressed bodies. Massage Harmony offers Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy at all three of its locations (West Gate, Central Austin and Bee Caves), and at rates in alignment with its more traditional services. As friends, fellow physicians and leaders in their field, Drs. Michael Moossy and Thomas Loftus prove the value of friendship in both medicine and the community at large. by Jody Joseph Marmel photography by deann hoeft

rs. Michael Moossy and Thomas Loftus are two exceptional doctors in their areas of expertise. While their story includes enhancing Austin’s medical community, it also shows the importance of friendship and that even physicians are human. While compassion is an essential part of the quality of medical care, it is also an integral component and the essence of Austin’s community at large. Both doctors are leaders in their field who prove compassion is essential to the quality of medical care. As a successful dentist, Moossy gives credit to his past. “I always loved working with my hands. I built bikes and remote control cars. This, combined with my desire to be in the medical field, created my desire to be a surgeon. Dentistry seemed to be the perfect fit.” Judging by the success of his practice, he certainly chose the right field. Loftus is a flourishing neurological surgeon. Born in England, he moved to Texas when he was 8 years old. “I had numerous family members who were veterinary surgeons in England. This initially sparked my interest in surgery,” he says. “After moving to the United States, I wasn’t around animals as much. Therefore, my interest changed to human surgery.” Neurosurgery seemed to be the most dynamic and challenging field, which is why Loftus pursued it as a career. Seven years ago, these two doctors met through a mutual friend. This was about the same time Moossy was becoming ill. “One day after working out at the gym, I got in my car and felt dizzy,” he says. “This was the beginning, and it didn’t go away for even one day in three-anda-half years.” Having constant vertigo, extreme headaches and nausea, and losing vision for periods of time, “I basically lived on my couch for those years in the fetal position wearing an eye shield, ear plugs and just surviving minute by minute.” After a battery of tests with no luck, he bounced around from doctor to doctor and continued to take medications that made him feel worse. Going to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., was the next step for Moossy. In a week of undergoing every test known to humankind, they diagnosed Moossy as “status migrainosus,” which translates into being “stuck” in a migraine. But the Mayo Clinic could not give any reason for his medical diagnosis. “I kept a positive outlook throughout the journey,” he says, “yet after the Mayo Clinic couldn’t help, I began to lose hope.” Loftus diagnosed his problems with those associated with a Chiari malformation. Loftus had studied these in great depth in medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern. A Chiari malformation is a herniation of the cerebellum. This means the cerebellum of the brain outgrows the skull and is forced down the opening into the spinal column. As a result, the cerebellum hits the spinal cord and restricts the flow of spinal fluid to the brain.
“You’ll feel our office revolves around you – because it does.”

Both doctors are leaders in their field who prove compassion is essential to the quality of medical care.
“It was the combination of high intracranial pressure and the pressure on the brain stem which was causing me to be in such misery,” explains Moossy, who likes to joke about it now. “I am so smart that my brain outgrew my skull.” Moossy believed in Loftus’ diagnosis, but unfortunately, none of the physicians treating him would agree. Finally, the last neurologist Moossy saw gave in and agreed for him to have the surgery. Loftus and Moossy discussed the possibility of having Loftus perform the surgery, but based on the friendship factor, they both agreed on another Austin surgeon. As a result of the surgery, Moossy was immediately feeling better after three-and-a-half years of unbearable suffering and struggling through multiple misdiagnoses. Today, he is fully recovered and there have been no traces of symptoms reoccurring. Both physicians could not be happier with the results. In 2003, Loftus opened his practice – Austin Neurosurgical Institute – here in Austin. He has narrowed the focus of his practice over the past few years to minimally invasive spine surgery, although he still does other types of spine surgery. “I stopped performing brain surgery three years ago so that I could focus my efforts on spine treatment.” Practicing general and cosmetic dentistry for 14 years, Moossy has a very busy practice located in the heart of the Medical Center. “This is my dream practice,” he says. “It is equipped with the latest technology, which allows me to practice at the highest level.” The office is modern and comfortable, and it does not have the feel of a clinic. Moossy’s patients are his best advocates, and there are plenty of rave reviews
20
NSIDE AUSTIN MD
(see Yelp, Facebook and the practice’s website). Numerous patients state their disbelief of how easy their dental appointment was and how much fun they had. “Each patient needs to be greeted and treated with a warm, friendly staff.” The philosophy is “you’ll feel like our office revolves around you – because it does.” Moossy’s personal touch and skilled techniques, along with his infectious personality, have awarded his practice with a bountiful and happy patient population. The patient base is extremely diverse. His practice treats patients from 8 years old all the way to 103. It is a good cross-section of what Austin has to offer: the old and the young, the wealthy and the poor musicians, the artists, the business owners, the pro athletes and the physicians. The list is endless. Moossy and his staff win their clients over time and time again. They love it when patients are amazed by their dental experience. It would really be hard not to have a good time or feel cared for in this office. “It’s all about the way we make you feel when you’re here,” Moossy says. “The dentistry is the easy part. It’s finding the right combination of having a skilled clinician with a superior staff. I am confident we have the best.” Moossy enjoys all the aspects of dentistry, including basic fillings, crowns and cosmetic dentistry. Implant cases are especially fulfilling. “I love the idea of giving someone a new tooth where there wasn’t one before.” He is the kind of dentist you can go to for just about everything. “It’s so satisfying to have a patient who is unhappy with the appearance of their teeth come into my office and whether by Invisalign, ve-
neers or whatever the case calls for, leaving my office and being confident with their improved smile.” With his keen wit, outgoing ways and compassion for his patients, it is no wonder his practice keeps growing. Moossy emphasizes how Loftus gave him not only his life back, but also his ability to practice. Shortly after Moossy recovered from his battle with the Chiari malformation, he was dealing with debilitating back pain associated with a degenerated disc, which in turn made it difficult to work on patients. Having steroid shots and physical therapy was not enough to stop the pain. So this year, Loftus performed the minimally invasive fusion surgery that significantly diminished his pain level. Having recently gone mountain biking three days in a row, Moossy says, “once again, Tom gave me my quality of life back. How could I ever pay him back except with my friendship? Fortunately, I did have a chance to save his cracked tooth and remove the pain associated with the damage, as well as continuing to take care of his dental needs. It’s so small in comparison.” This is a story not only of “reciprocity among doctors,” Moossy says, but of compassion among friends. Dr. Michael Moossy’s practice is located at 4200 N. Lamar, Ste. 145, Austin, Texas 78756. For more information, call 512-459-5437 or visit www.drmoossy.com. Invest in Yourself
Don’t let your insecurities slow you down. Consult the professionals at Sono Bello, a medical practice dedicated to helping you find solutions for some of your most challenging problem areas. Special to NSIDE How would you react to an impromptu day at the beach? Would you feel excited about spending a whole day in the sun with the people you care about, or would that excitement be dulled by the dread of having to put on a bathing suit? As we go through the hustle and bustle of our lives, one thing’s for sure: We don’t have time to let our insecurities hold us back. Sono Bello is all about finding a solution to your most challenging problem areas so you can live your life the way you’re supposed to: to the fullest! Some friends have mentioned Sono Bello before. What is Sono Bello? Sono Bello is a medical practice in Austin that specializes solely in laser-assisted liposuction, using our TriSculpt™ process to help patients say goodbye to their most difficult problem areas. The most popular areas we treat for both men and women are the abdomen and “love handles.” Through the TriSculpt process, however, we can treat almost any part of the body. What is the TriSculpt process? It is a three-step process developed by our team of doctors at Sono Bello. Through TriSculpt, we can customize a procedure to fit the particular needs to each and every patient. The process entails localized, awake anesthetic, power-assisted liposuction for larger areas and a laser-assisted liposuction to perform the finishing touches. How long will it take to see the final results? Most of our patients report seeing noticeable results in just a few weeks after their procedure. There is no way to know your individual healing speed, fluid retention or how quickly you will see the final results ahead of time. It can take up to six months to achieve the final results, but many patients experience their results more quickly. What is the recovery process like? How long do people usually wait before they go back to work? Many factors are involved in the recovery pro-

cess, including which areas are treated, body mass index, age and your personal discomfort tolerance. Though the recovery process varies from person to person, 75 percent of our patients report going back to work within one to three days following their procedure. do you WANT WHITER TEETH?
Ten things you can do every day to help make your smile whiter, brighter and healthier by Dr. Kevin Kim
Summer is here, and many people are whipping themselves into shape to look their best. A quick, effective and cost-efficient way is to whiten your teeth. As we age, our teeth naturally discolor. However, many times, it is what we do on a daily basis that contributes to the discoloring of our teeth. Here are my top 10 recommendations if you desire a whiter and brighter smile:
➊ use tooth Whitening Kits. Whitening gel is placed in trays and can remove some deep stains, as well as surface stains. Of all the home treatments, take-home kits offer the most effective results.
➋ get in-Office Whitening. If you desire a more dramatic, effective and quicker option (compared to the take-home whitening kits), in-office teeth whitening is the way to go. This can be done in less than one hour, and it can typically lighten your teeth by five to nine shades, on average – sometimes more!
➌ Do Not Brush Too Aggressively. Brushing your teeth rigorously or too frequently will cause the outer tooth structure to thin. When this happens, the darker inside layer is revealed. Grip your toothbrush like a pencil to avoid scrubbing too hard, and use a gentle circular motion rather than a back-and-forth motion.

dental problems later.
Use only once or twice a week to remove surface stains and prevent yellowing. Any more may be too aggressive to your enamel.
➒ Eat “detergent” foods.
➎ Avoid Smoking. More than any other factor, smoking can contribute to dull, yellow teeth. Smoking can leave unsightly spots and weaken your teeth, as well as lead to a host of other problems.
Foods that are firm or crisp help clean teeth as they’re eaten; some examples are apples, raw carrots and celery. For convenient teeth-cleaning action, make an apple the final food you eat in your meal if you know you won’t be able to brush your teeth right after eating.
➓ Visit your Dentist Every six Months. ➏ Drink Smarter. Avoid coffee, tea, soda and red wine as much as you can. Other than staining your teeth, these beverages can also cause cavities and break down the healthy enamel. If you think you cannot give up any of these, make sure you at least brush your teeth right after consuming them. If you drink any of these, consider using a straw so the liquid will bypass the front of your teeth.
➐ Rinse your Mouth with Water after Eating. If there is no way to brush your teeth, this is the next best alternative to keep food stains from settling in.
➑ Brush and Floss Twice a day. Of course brushing and flossing contribute to a healthy oral environment and are very important in having a bright smile. Brushing and flossing can keep the food or plaque from resting on your teeth over long periods of time, which will also prevent
See your dentist for regular checkups and professional cleaning. The abrasion and polishing methods dentists use can remove plaque and calculus, as well as many teeth stains caused by food, beverages and tobacco. Getting your regular cleaning twice a year is one of the best possible things you can do to keep your smile healthy. Your smile is one of the first things people notice when they look at you. You always want to look your best, and that means keeping your smile bright and white! skin care 101
Serenity Creek Med Spa answers some common questions about sunscreens, SPF factors and UV radiation. Special to NSIDE
➊
What are sunscreens? Sunscreens are topical products combining several ingredients that will help prevent the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. There are two types of UV radiation: UVA and UVB. These increase your chance of skin cancer and can damage the skin. All sunscreens are different and vary in their ability to protect against UVA and UVB. The sun protection factor (SPF) is what measures the ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin in sunscreens. Broad-spectrum sunscreens help protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are quicker to produce sunburn, are more powerful and have been linked to melanoma. Aging of the skin is associated with UVA rays, and although milder, UVA rays may increase the risk of melanoma.
➋
What does the SPF number on the sunscreen mean? The SPF number on sunscreens measures the protection against UVB. This radiation is what causes the burning of the skin. The number is a derived ratio that measures the increased amount of radiation that causes redness in the skin when the sunscreen is applied, compared to when it is not used at all. For example, if it takes 10 minutes for unprotected skin to show redness, then an SPF 15 sunscreen applied correctly will take 15 times as long to burn, or 150 minutes.
➌
How protective are sunscreens? Do sunscreens offer everyone the same protection? And how much SPF do you really need? According to the American Academy of Dermatology, sunscreens should protect against UVA and UVB, and the SPF should be 30 or greater and water resistant. Both adults and children should use an SPF 30. Creams are best for dry skin; we recommend the Treatment Sunscreen, SPF 25, by iS Clinical ($36). The protection of sunscreens is not the same for everyone. For someone who is more prone to burning, a sunscreen labeled SPF 30 may act as an SPF 10, while for someone else, the same product may act like an SPF 60.

➍
What kind of ingredients should you look for in a sunscreen? Are chemicals in sunscreens safe? When searching for the right sunscreen, make sure the sunscreen contains zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. Both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide work by sitting on top of the skin and providing a barrier against UV rays. Zinc oxide provides protection over the broad spectrum of UVA and UVB. Titanium dioxide protects against UVB rays and short UVA rays, but unfortunately, not against longer UVA rays. All of our sunscreens have zinc oxide or titanium oxide in them.

Intellishade® SPF 45, an anti-aging tinted moisturizer, is now available in Original Radiant or NEW Matte formulas.
When should I use sunscreen? Everyone should use sunscreen every day. The sun releases harmful UV rays year-round. Harmful UV rays can penetrate your skin even on a cloudy day. Snow and sand increase the need for sunscreen because the sun’s rays reflect off the snow and sand. Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going out into the sun. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating. For easy application, we recommend Powder Sunscreen, SPF 20, by iS Clinical ($43) or gloMinerals Protecting Powder (bronze or translucent), SPF 30 ($40).
➏
What are the side effects of not using sunscreen? Without sunscreen, you are more prone to melanoma, fine lines and wrinkles and melasma. To help prevent melanoma, fine lines and wrinkles, we suggest our tinted moisturizer and anti-aging sunscreen, Revision Skin Care Intellishade (original or matte), SPF 45 ($48), or iS Clinical’s Tinted Treatment Sunscreen, SPF 25 ($38). Melasma is dark skin discoloration that appears on the face from overexposure to the sun and by hormones. To help treat and correct melasma and fine lines and wrinkles, getting on a pharmaceutical grade regimen will help dramatically. Also, doing in-office treatments such as Botox, JUVEDERM, microdermabrasion, IPL Photofacials and chemical peels periodically could help with the appearance of the skin. When doing microdermabrasion, IPL Photofacials and chemical peels during the summer, you must be careful not to have sun exposure before or after these treatments, and always use sunscreen. During the summer, we suggest the Fire and Ice Facial by iS Clinical ($50) to maintain a beautiful summer glow.
Perfect Tint® SPF 25, hydrating, protective tinted moisturizer offers antioxidant-rich protective seal and soothes inflammation.

“You’ve got to leave the world a better place. That’s your legacy: what you can give and leave behind.”
Expanding Horizons Dr. John Hogg puts his affinity for both the medical and the visual arts into practice at the Austin Radiological Association, the Mexic Arté Museum and several other service-oriented organizations. by Daniel Ramirez
To walk into the home of Dr. John Hogg of the Austin Radiological Association (ARA) is to step into a reflection of all that defines the soft-spoken doctor. His home boasts a view of the Austin skyline that robs breath easily. A mere few steps in, the horizon stretches nearly as far as one can imagine, past the downtown skyscrapers and toward the wide-open spaces beyond.

One would have to be very busy to bring together this amalgamation of home, art and artifacts – there is even a nautical telescope to whisper of faraway vistas. Of course, Hogg has been looking to that horizon as long as he can remember, and today finds the man, his career and his compass firmly pointed toward the line where the land meets the sky. Hogg’s upbringing in Gilmer, Texas, not only em-
bedded the Southern charm evident in his speech, but also a deep-seated desire to serve. “You’ve got to leave the world a better place,” Hogg explains. “I’ve always been a service-oriented person. Whether it was serving people at the Dairy Queen as a little kid or whatever, you’ve got to give back.” This tenet has prompted him to be involved with a number of charities, including Austin’s Mexic Arté Museum. There, he helps bring art to the underrepresented. “We serve the kids that are in some of the underserved areas or challenged areas, demographically,” he says. “They have the highest dropout rates and least opportunities, so we have 50-something after-school programs in those areas. It really makes an impact.” Hogg also serves with the Hispanic Scholarship Consortium, the People’s Community Clinic Foundation and the local fire department. “That’s your legacy: what you can give and leave behind.” Add these things to his time at the ARA, and Hogg’s legacy appears to be in good shape. Hogg’s affinity for the visual has also contributed to a great deal of success elsewhere. At the ARA, he uses that gift to interpret medical imagery to help heal the infirmed. Their PAC systems deliver the highest-quality images and provide Hogg with the best information to find the problem – and the solution. “I love medicine because we’re delivering care, but I love radiology because you’re solving the puzzle,” Hogg explains. “The visual aspect is very important, and it’s an art, in and of itself.” Hogg’s residency at Emory University mirrors the present trend, as he looks to the horizon of a growing practice. “I had a great time and experienced bringing a lot of high-quality technologies from Emory into rural practices and delivering a high level of care, rurally,” the doctor notes. “That’s a lot of what I still do: making sure that our rural practices are carrying the same standard of care as the inner-city hospitals.” And with Austin growing at blinding speed, Hogg still has his eyes on the horizon, looking forward. “We’re expanding as a lot of the hospitals do. We’re doing what we can to keep up with the demand as it increases.” The Mexic Arté Museum is located at 419 Congress Ave., Austin, Texas 78701. Celebrities: Bad for Your Health? Forget the fad diets and get science on your side by addressing the underlying issues in order to meet your weight-loss goals in a healthy and effective way. by Myles Cooper & tracy ganske
Want to lose 20 pounds? Easy! Just ask Britney Spears how. Wait, what? Ask the pop diva how she lost weight while drinking a Grande Frappuccino and eating Cheetos? The reality is celebrities aren’t great role models when it comes to weight loss. The tabloids might lead us to believe that all it took was elimination of carbs and intense yoga sessions, but if we “real people” try that, we are lucky to lose one pound, not 10. Last year, one of the most popular search terms on both Google and Yahoo was Kim Kardashian. A quick review of the top 500 searches for last year reveals inquiries on other celebrities, too, including Spears, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry. Why are we, as a country, so fascinated with celebrities? When considering what is universally accepted as an ideal shape and structure for the human body, we typically refer to the grinning, gleaming celebrities who always make looking great so easy. While these attractive folks have achieved extraordinary fame for their figures in both film and photographs, they possess no extraordinary secret power for weight loss that the rest of the ordinary human populace does not. Stars try to make it seem like the light emitted from the interminable camera flashes they’re subjected to every day endows them with a mysterious secret for weight loss that will only work for them. Don’t be fooled! Most celebrities have achieved a level of financial security that enables them to take advantage of some of the most expensive, over-publicized, overglamorized weight-loss techniques. They have the luxury of personal chefs and private trainers, as well as an obnoxious amount of time to work out while they’re waiting around to be photographed. “As celebrities continue to exert their influence on the perceptions and beliefs of Americans, physicians are finding that we have to spend more and more time with our patients correcting misinformation,” said Dr. Anthony Youn in his article, “Celebrities Can be Bad for Your Health.” One thing is certain: Diets do not work. Of all the diets people embark on, only 2 to 6 percent are successful. Why? Because successful weight loss isn’t always about “calorie math” – you take in fewer calories, while also exercising to burn off extra calories to create that deficit, and poof: Like magic, the weight will fall off. This isn’t the case for many of us. We all know people who eat next to nothing and never lose a pound. If we let the unreal advantages celebrities enjoy overwhelm us and get us low, it will distract us from the real answer to our own personal weightloss goals. This elusive blueprint for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight that makes you look and feel great resides purely in the science of human biology. There is unfortunately no “one size fits all” approach to weight loss. Each person needs to be seen as an individual and carefully studied to understand the root cause of the weight gain. There is no magic pill or diet that works for everyone. To truly lose
weight in a way that is healthy and effective, the following issues must be addressed:
Hormone imbalances We rarely pay attention to the importance of hormones, but when you wake up one day in your mid40s and have gained 20 pounds seemingly overnight, you will want to start paying closer attention to your hormones. Hormones are extremely potent; very small amounts can pack a punch. Too much or too little, or an imbalance, can upset your metabolism and cause you to gain weight.
Of all the diets people embark on, only 2 to 6 percent are successful. Hormones function best, like the instruments in a well-tuned orchestra, when they are correctly balanced. If any instrument is missing, overpowering or out of tune, it can throw off an entire performance. Similarly, an alteration of a hormone’s structure can upset your metabolism and cause you to gain weight. Understanding if you have a hormonal imbalance is an important first step.
Reduce inflammation Inflammation is a response of tissue to injury, often injury caused by invading pathogens. When you receive an injury that causes tissue to inflame, the inflammation of that injury causes insulin resistance. The reverse of this sequence is true, as well; insulin resistance also causes inflammation. Many of the illnesses we are experiencing in the 21st century stem from our diets containing an overabundance of sugar, refined carbohydrates, trans fat, omega-6 fats from processed plant oils and artificial sweeteners. To go along with a poor diet, we also tend to lead rather sedentary lifestyles that put us into contact with environmental toxins. All of these factors contribute to inflammation, and for every person, it is a different path to diffusing the health risks by reducing inflammation.
Improve digestion It’s really all about a healthy gut. Recent research has shown that composition of gut flora differs in people who are obese and diabetic, versus people who are normal weight with no metabolic abnormalities. Here is another disturbing piece of research: Changes in gut flora can increase the rate at
which we absorb fatty acids and carbohydrates and increase the storage of those calories to fat. What does this all mean, exactly? It means that someone with bad gut flora could eat the same amount of food as a person with healthy gut flora, but extract more calories from it and gain weight! The key is to work on what is known in functional medicine as the four Rs: Remove the bad bugs, drugs and food allergens; replace needed enzymes, fiber and prebiotics; reinoculate your gut with good bacteria or probiotics; and finally, repair the gut lining with omega-3 fats, zinc, glutamine, quercetin and other healing nutrients.
Maximize detoxification Environmental toxins interfere with blood sugar and cholesterol metabolism, as well as block the function of receptors on the nuclei of your cells. Scientists have realized that these toxins can increase glucose levels, cause cholesterol buildup, contribute to a fatty liver and slow down your thyroid function. On top of everything, environmental toxins can trick your brain into thinking your body is hungry when it really is not. All of these factors spur weight gain that can be easily avoided by deducing the toxic environmental factors that affect you and eliminating them from your life.
Genetics Believe it or not, your genetics play a role in your weight. Those who come from a family of overweight family members have a higher risk of becoming obese themselves. But all is not lost – we can change this destiny. By understanding our genetic makeup, we can influence our body weight. We each have a different genetic makeup. As they say, no two people are created the same. Some of us have genes that tell our body to absorb fat in excessive amounts and store it as body fat. Other people may have genes that say absorb carbohydrates and store them as fat. Just like some people can digest milk and some people cannot. When you know which foods your genes say you should store as fat, you can better manage your weight. According to research at Stanford University, you can lose two to three times more weight when you match your diet to your genes.
Adrenal fatigue and cortisol imbalances Cortisol is sometimes known as the “stress hormone.” It comes from the adrenal gland located on top of the kidney. Cortisol is released as a response to stress and anxiety, and it directs the breakdown of the various tissues such as fat. When cortisol is elevated for a long period of time, it stimulates the deposit of a specific kind of fat called visceral fat. This is the source of fat that is around your stomach. Celebrities might be helpful when it comes to fake tans and styling tips. But when it comes to weight loss, you need science on your side.
