In Nigeria, the value for education seems to be deteriorating as less attention is accorded the sector by the government. In the 2021 budget passed by the federal government, only 6.3 percent of the budget is allocated to the ministry of education, falling below the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation recommendation.

The poor funding of the sector has contributed to the deplorable state of federal institutions with many facilities due for renovation. This in turn leaves no room for any form of innovation nor the incorporation of technology as well as creative methods in teaching. It has also led to a constant decline in the remuneration for teachers and provision of necessary learning tools and facilities.
For several years on end, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and other workers’ unions in the education sector have protested the non-payment of Earned Allowance, salary arrears and other welfare concerns.

Currently, there has been an ongoing strike by ASUU. Due to the strike, government owned universities have been shut down in Nigeria for 10 months and students have been forced to remain at home for this period, thereby violating their right to education by virtue of Section 18(1), (2) and (3) of the Nigerian Constitution and Article 17(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Right (Ratification and Enforcement) Act Cap, A9 LFN, 2004.
This has led to the loss of valuable time which cannot be regained by these students and also created a state of mental disillusionment as the future remains bleak in the absence of an effective education. We cannot imagine the future we are creating if basic education cannot be accorded prime attention by the nation.

CULTURE
‘Educated’ by Tara Westover is an inspiring story that reveals what it’s like to yearn for education as well as the patience and persistence to actually sit through the process of it. She describes her difficult childhood with her fundamentalist Mormon family, isolated from people and forced to take on the risky work in a family-owned junkyard. And how she takes a leap from this to a life in London with a doctorate from Cambridge and a fellowship at Harvard University.

FLASH FICTION
This is how Papa paints the mountain. He sits in front of the rotting canvas, the numb fingers of his right hand grip the brush and the aluminium paint tray dances on his quivering left palm. Mama warns me never to disturb Papa when he paints but I still do. Today, the painting is almost done. Papa has perfected the blue of the mountain’s peak, the melting snow no longer looks like spilt milk and he has fixed the brown-brown skin of the elephants and buffalos grazing at the foot of the mountain. “Ke kwanu,” I greet. “Who are you?” He asks, bearing the little remains of his chequered teeth. “I live here,” I tell him because I don’t have the muscle to remind him I’m his son and then explain to him what a son is. Papa does not seem to remember much these days.

“So we are like neighbours.” Papa sets down the paint tray on the floor. “You remind me of my son Zim.” I smile, pat Papa’s shoulder and run into the house before Mama sees us together. The last time Mama caught me talking to Papa, she yanked at my ears and called me ‘devil’s child’. Tonight, Papa calls us to come and see his finished painting. Mama and I chewed our tears and smiled away. We know at midnight, Papa will crawl into the painting and return to the mountain. We all came from the mountain and must go back there someday.
