“The appointments have come as a result of a rigorous search and selection process and many hours were spent finding the right directors who have the required specific skill sets and bring diversity of thinking,” says Wools of New Zealand chair Mark Shadbolt. “They are all well equipped to do the job we need today and importantly, have the ability to look to the future and think globally. “It also sends an important message of confidence in the strategy behind Wools of New Zealand that we have been able to attract directors of this calibre, particularly given we are a young company coupled with the challenges facing the industry as a whole. “Highly respected auditor Ian Marshall (independent board appointed director), will also chair our Audit and Risk committee, and will strengthen the strategic direction and financial acumen around the board table and within the company. “Rebecca Smith (independent board appointed director) and Lucy Griffiths (grower appointed director) were a very deliberate decision to capture real and proven international sales and marketing expertise and experience alongside the ability to tap into their global market insights and networks.” Mr Shadbolt says the director appointments had to be right given the key role they will play at the board table, in the interests of grower shareholders who are putting their futures in our hands. “These new directors understand strategy, sales, branding and marketing,

They have all signed up to delivering consistent and greater returns to grower shareholders. “I have no doubt about these people as directors. We have already seen the benefit of their insights and knowledge when they joined us at our last board meeting. “The appointments provide balance and a range of expertise and connections, both globally and locally, that will assist the rapid progress of growth required for Wools of New Zealand to succeed on the world stage.”

Beef continues to grow During the past year, New Zealand’s beef cattle herd increased by 2.8 per cent — to 3.6 million head — while the decline in the sheep flock slowed sharply as sheep numbers recovered in key regions after drought and other challenges. The annual stock number survey conducted by Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Economic Service highlights the continued growth in beef production, as farmers move towards livestock that are less labour-intensive and currently more profitable. “The largest contributor to the increase in the number of beef cattle was a five per cent lift in weaner cattle numbers, reflecting the high cost of buying older cattle as replacements and good grass availability. Meanwhile, the size of New Zealand’s beef breeding cow herd did not change,” says B+LNZ Economic Service chief economist Andrew Burtt. “The number of breeding ewes fell in most regions of New Zealand — and by 1.9 per cent overall. The exception was in Marlborough-Canterbury, where there was a small increase (+0.3%) following the prolonged drought. “Ewe numbers decreased 2.6 per cent to 8.7 million in the North Island, while South Island numbers dropped 1.1 per cent to 9.1 million. The decrease in the North Island reflects residual effects of last year’s facial eczema outbreak — nationwide there has been more emphasis on retaining ewe hoggets, which indicates some rebuilding of the flock is occurring.” Consequently, the national hogget

flock is up on last year with numbers increasing 1.7 per cent to 8.7 million, largely due to replacement ewe hoggets being retained on the East Coast to build up flocks, and an increase in Marlborough-Canterbury to take advantage of the improvement in feed supplies after a number of difficult years caused by drought and natural disasters. Mr Burtt says ewes were in good condition at mating, and going into winter, due to feed availability. “Pregnancy scanning of ewes reveals good pregnancy rates in the North Island, but the later season as a result of climatic differences means it’s difficult to generalise about the South Island.” Despite the small decrease in

the number of breeding ewes, the lamb crop is expected to be up 1.1 per cent — to 23.5 million — 0.3 million more than last season. “This is the result of several factors, including continued improvements in productivity by farmers leading to better ewe lambing percentages, good feed supplies, and a lift in the number of ewe hoggets mated.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Working together for success by Ann Morgan

Beginning with family on Hawke’s Bay’s Mangaroa and Ruakaka stations, Matawai sheep and beef farmers Eugene and Pania King are preparing for the succession of future generations on the family land.

E

ugene grew up on the family farm in Taranaki and Pania grew up on her grandparents’ farm in Waimana and spent a lot of time in Te Urewera. “My grandfather was the ranger and we did lots of possuming and hunting. I loved it and still do,” said Pania. The couple decided to make farming their career 16 years ago when they both took a step back from shearing in New Zealand and around the world, but still do their own shearing on the farm. They have four sons — 17-year-old Levi, 13-year-old Haeora, 12-year-old Erueti and 6-year-old Taane. “We moved to Hawke’s Bay from Taranaki when our eldest son was nine months old. Eugene helped run the family farm with his brother in Whangamomona,” says Pania.

The four King siblings and their partners then put their funds together and moved into partnership and brought Mangaroa Station and leased Ruakaka Station, going on and purchasing Ruakaka three years later. Eventually Eugene and Pania purchased Kiriroa Station, which they have farmed for the past three years. “We farmed together for 12 years on Mangaroa and Ruakaka stations and our goal was always for each family to own their own farm,” says Eugene. “We are still strongly connected and involved in farming business practices together. It has been great as we have different points of view, so when we put our opinions together we are a strong unit and get good solutions to problems. “This farm needed a lot of care when we acquired it and we have

completed stockyard and infrastructure development, subdivision and replaced many kilometres of fencing.” The 347ha property is 297ha effective and is described as a quarter flat, half rolling and a quarter steep. They also lease a further 154ha (60ha effective). Kiriroa Station is home to kahikatea forest and mature native bush. A further two hectares has been fenced and planted in young native trees and grasses to create habitat for the Weka. It is the start of many more riparian plantings to be done on Kiriroa. “We do all our own pest management with trapping and night shooting.” The farm has sheep and beef, including 1,800 ewes and 500 hoggets and a range of bulls and steers, and has run an average of 11 stock units per effective hectare for the past two years. Using capital expenditure wisely and controlling expenses whilst working hard, they have increased the farm’s economic surplus. “We have now moved into a full beeftrading system,” says Eugene. “I pride myself on having our stock in the best condition they can be in and am a great believer in feeding stock well. We utilise the grass and put in 16ha of winter brassica crops and this year we are trialling a kale swede mix.” Last season they slaughtered 2609 lambs through AFFCO at an average weight of 18.4kg. The average weight of the R2 heifers was 240kg, the twoyear-old bulls averaged 334kg and the R3 steers averaged 331kg. The next step with their succession plan is for

Everyone in the King family is involved in caring for the property and looking after the animals their children. “Those interested in agriculture will have the opportunity to work on our farms to get experiences first hand,” says Pania. “Eugene and I compliment each other in so many ways — we work hard as well as try our best to keep a good family balance. Our family always comes first and we are working towards schooling our four sons at Lindisfarne College. “Two are full time boarders already and one starts next year. We believe Lindisfarne gives them a safe learning environment with the opportunities they won’t get elsewhere. “It is all part of our plan — preparing them well and getting them ready to succeed themselves in the future.” The King’s won the CB Norwood Distributors Ltd Agri-Business

Management Award, Beef + Lamb New Zealand Livestock Award, and the East Coast Farming for the Future Award, as supported by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and the Gisborne District Council at the Ballance Farm Environment Awards. The judges said the Kings’ have gone above and beyond what could be expected in the short time they have been on the farm and the motivation and determination of the whole family to get where they have is inspirational. Eugene says he would recommend anyone to enter the awards. “We were reluctant at the start but once we were involved we found it very relaxed and we enjoyed it immensely. We got a lot out of bench-marking ourselves against peers in the industry.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Farming for the greater good

The Hart family own Mangarara Station fondly known as ‘the family farm’ in Elsthorpe and have found success by taking on a regenerative agriculture approach to their farming methods.

by Joanna Manson

I

n 1996 Greg and Rachel Hart shifted onto the 610 hectares that make up Mangarara Station which has been traditionally run as a sheep and cattle farm since the 1850s. The farm is a diverse mix of lakes, wetlands, peat flats, rolling and steep hills, pasture, native and exotic trees. “We were very conventional and really production focussed. We were part of a discussion group with some award winning farmers in Hawke’s Bay but we got to a point when we asked “how much is enough.” Then around the time our first child was born we started thinking about his future and the food that we would be feeding him.” The duo started a journey exploring sustainable and regenerative options. “We looked at the position we’re in as land owners and asked ourselves,

how do we use that land to meet the challenges the planet faces and also be part of the change that is required to create a thriving future?“ Around 2005 the couple started a gradual transition. They began looking at pastoral agriculture and production which largely relied on bringing fertilisers from the other side of the world. “Farm fertility took us down the track of the organic and ecological agricultural approach. It was a whole lot of learning, book reading, and visiting farms to learn about biological principles.” One of the biggest changes the couple has made to the land has been reducing sheep numbers and getting more cattle onto the farm as they move to a system of holistic grazing which is a management technique.

The system that Mangarara has adapted uses large mobs of cattle which are shifted daily so they are constantly on the move and offered fresh and tall grass pasture every day. As the cattle graze, some of the grass is trampled onto the surface and with the addition of dung and urine from the animals, a compost-like mulch forms which in turn puts nutrients back into the soil. Greg says taller grass also has a bigger root system that enables the plant to access more nutrients and water from deeper in the soil profile as well as depositing carbon from the atmosphere back into the soil. In 2008 Greg and Rachel approached Air New Zealand about an idea to exchange air points for a tree planting project. “We just happened to be in the right place at the right time and were fortunate to get some funding from the Air New Zealand Environment Trust.” Over three years the funding allowed the Hart family to plant 85,000 trees on their property — something that Greg says has transformed the landscape. In exchange for the funding the farm has been opened up to the public and they have cemented the relationship with Air NZ. Greg said they felt it was important for visitors to understand how food is

produced and where it came from. “We wanted to connect people back the land and food. It seemed obvious to have a lodge so people can really experience the farm and also have it set up as an education space.” Since 2008 the majority of the 106,000 trees now planted on the farm have been New Zealand natives. “As our farm is all about diversity we have planted dozens of exotic species including timber lots of pine and eucalyptus and Himalayan cyprus. There is a 4.5 hectare block of 12 different species of oak which eventually will be for timber but until then pigs will graze underneath them eating acorns and they look great on a dry hillside.” Another venture Greg and Rachel have undertaken is trying to raise awareness about wise food choices and launched the Mangarara ‘meat box’ last year. “Every mouthful of food we take is grown in a way that is either degrading the planet or it can be from a system like ours that is regenerating the land and water and increasing biodiversity.” Greg says Mangarara has definitely generated a lot of “curiosity” but thinks the conversation is starting to change. “We’ll always be moving forward — the more you learn the more you realise you don’t know so that’s pretty exciting.” Looking ahead the Hart’s hope to continue planting plenty more

At this point Gevir (which is Danish for antler) was still with it’s founders Clint and Shelley Thomsen. or over 2,000 years, Asian civilisations have used deer velvet as a preventative tonic for immunity and joint conditions. Today it is prized for its health-promoting properties for humans and animals. Josh had heard about Hawke’s Baybased deer velvet supplements Gevir through support by local retailers. After three shoulder reconstruction surgeries he turned to the product in a bid to ease a dull ache and constant numbness. “I tried Gevir, and after two weeks I started getting some feeling back and the dull ache was gone. sale a lightbulb went on. I was caught in a corporate career at the time and we jumped at the opportunity. We saw Gevir as something we believed in and thought we could work on the story and tell it a bit differently. “Deer velvet has really unique points of difference and we thought it was something we could help market and sell to an increasingly more health conscious market.” Josh and Penny bought a farm close to Hastings and Havelock North when they moved back to Hawke’s Bay in 2011. After growing up in Central Hawke’s Bay, Josh had a strong network of contacts including deer farmers, Grant and Sally Charteris who won the 2016 Hawke’s Bay farmer of the year. He saw the benefits of working with someone like Grant who was passionate about the deer velvet industry and providing quality velvet. Josh also saw the benefits of finding similar farmers, “so we can partner with these guys, get their products onto the market though a direct channel, rather than selling to wholesalers. “It is a great feeling showing farmers where their products are improving lives outside of the farm gate. “Velvet is produced once a year as the stags cast their previous hard antlers in the early spring and then they start growing the new velvet which we harvest in early summer — the stags are used to the process and being handled and seem as happy as Larry.” The farm must be certified to retrieve the deer velvet, if not, then a vet must be present for the procedure.

where quality still counts

Velvet is produced once a year when a stag casts its previous hard antlers

Afterwards the antlers are immediately frozen and transported in freezer trucks to the processing plant. The velvet is turned into powder and encapsulated with a single ingredient being ‘Super A Premium Deer Velvet’ with a gelatin capsule to contain it. After their first year in business the couple started to implement change in their marketing to give the product a wider appeal. Josh says their second year with a new marketing strategy also came as a big learning curve. “A lot of time was spent on the phone educating our retailers and reassuring our previous customers. We found sales grew about 30% in New Zealand which

was quite cool.” Josh was full time in the business in January 2016 and soon found himself on a plane to China relaying the Gevir story before signing with a large marketing e-commerce distributor before heading to the United States. Josh says there are still many challenges and obstacles to overcome and a lot of new learning to be done. He’s currently implementing a new international growth strategy. “By year’s end Gevir will be in the USA, China, Canada, Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom, Europe. Our customers are definitely our best salespeople with thousands of customers in NZ and around the world telling the Gevir story.”

Green feed on demand “The capability of producing in excess of 100 tonnes of fresh green feed a year from an area less than the size of a 20’ shipping container is a game changer when it comes to intensification of livestock feed production.” David Petterson of Fodder NZ, says: “Whether you are feeding calves, cattle, sheep, deer, goats, pigs , horses or any number of exotic species, the ability to provide fresh nutritious green feed each and every day is a massive leap forward in captive cropping.” The Fodder NZ system centres on the sprouting of barley under computerised climatically controlled growing conditions. While the systems are built around a modular framework, Fodder NZ can adapt the layout to meet the production requirements of the end user, working with farmers to optimise space and production. With a fodder shed, droughts or floods no longer define the limitations of the farm management plan. With a Fodder NZ growing facility these events are met with a fresh, sustainable daily

available feed supply. The growing shed in particular presents the opportunity to grow the feed platform without increasing the physical size of the farm. While the transportable growing rooms offered by Fodder NZ can produce green feed ranging from 44 tonnes to 182 tonnes a year, Petterson says the transportable rooms were just the beginning of the production potential of Fodder NZ’s growing facilities. Large scale production gains are made in the one tonne-a-day-plus growing sheds. One of the real benefits of the Fodder NZ system is that existing farm sheds can be retro fitted to grow fodder, eliminating the need to buy or build a purpose-built shed. While configurations of sheds can vary, as a guide, a shed 11m x 7m could produce around 360

Calf Rearing Why Use Hutches or Pens?

Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.

• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment

• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor

New safety rules need observing Agriculture equipment standing idle is not going to help the bottom line and many farmers take the opportunity to undertake contract work to boost their income sources. Like any business venture, care is needing in setting up, and in this day and age there is a huge emphasis on health and safety. Last year the New Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) came into effect which repealed the Health

and Safety in Employment Act 1992. Good health and safety practice is not something you can just buy off the shelf and farmers need to build health and safety into everyday activity on-farm. The same applies when they venture out into other endeavors.

WorkSafe’s agriculture programme manager, Al McCone, says while many farmers will want to get consultants in to give them expert advice, there is no single product or document that is a silver bullet for farm safety. Farmers should only employ competent and qualified professional health and safety advisors. “When selecting a new contractor or buying stock, farmers do their homework,” says Mr McCone. “They shop around, look online, ask other farmers and make a decision based on sound information. The same should apply to buying health and safety advice and resources. For a would-be farming contractor, the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment can offer health safety direction advice as well as directions on tendering for work. It says tendering can be time

consuming but it can also lead to substantial rewards. ‘You should think carefully before, during and after the process. Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,’ it says. You’ll need to think about the day-to-day and long-term effects on your business as well as those all important health and safety requirements. Each year health and safety inspectors carr y out 12,500 workplace assessments. These are proactive, planned visits and are not usually triggered by a report of serious harm or a health and safety complaint. At least 80% of workplace assessments are targeted to industries identified as high risk, which includes agriculture, forestry, construction and manufacturing.

Technology cares for the land by Paul Campbell

Technology in the 21st century would no doubt baffle the farmers who broke in the Hawke’s Bay farms of last century but today it has become an essential tool for the agriculture industry. The Global Positioning System and its spin-offs have advanced out of sight combining real-time data collection with accurate position information that is available on a smartphone . GPS is being used to achieve precision farming enabling the land-owner and the rural contractor to develop the most effective soil/plant treatment strategies enabling higher farm production while GPS mapping allows aerial top dressers and bulk spreaders to carry out the precise application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers. That’s vital for the bottom line as better control and spread of costly fertiliser, accurate spraying and vegetation control is possible, reducing overall expenses, producing a higher yield, and even more importantly creating a more environmentally friendly farm with strict application controls possible. Precision agriculture is about collecting timely geospatial information on soil-plant-animal requirements

and prescribing and applying sitespecific treatments to increase agricultural production. But it is not only ground or aerial spreading that has taken a huge leap forward. All other aspects of farming have benefited, with field-placed sensors in stock paddocks, croplands and orchards sending real time data to phones, i-pads and computers. Farmers are seeing benefits from micromanaging their fields. The benefits of precision agriculture are not only limited to the large farms with huge capital investments and experience with information technologies. There are inexpensive and easy-to-use methods and techniques. Information needed for improving land and water use can be collected. Farmers can improve the use of fertilisers and other soil amendments, determining the economic threshold for treating pest and weed infestations, and protecting natural resources for future

use. Farm equipment manufacturers are also adopting sophisticated GPS devices to help farmers and agribusinesses become more productive and efficient. The accuracy of GPS creates farm maps with precise acreage for field areas,

road locations and distances between points of interest. GPS allows farmers to accurately navigate to specific locations in the field, year after year, to collect soil samples or just monitor conditions.

A versatile helping hand by Andy Bryenton

A great asset on the building site and a common sight wherever hard-hats are worn, the punchy little skid-steer loader has long been associated with hard work. out with super-wide floatation treads — but that’s just the start. As CAT’s range of skid steers has seen action in arenas from forestry to snow clearance, they’ve learned a thing or two about both riding smoothly over rough terrain and retaining heavy loads while doing it. The engineers behind the 239D have incorporated an advanced fully independent torsion axle suspension system, allowing smooth delivery of power via those big wide treads from CAT’s C2.2 high-torque engine. This, and a comfortable cab for the operator take care of the ‘back end’ — but it’s the option up front which have

tillers to turn over the soil. Potentially, a combo of these attachments could turn wasteland into productive land using one base machine. There’s also a series of forks and bale grabs, spikes and silage pit defacers which can be a big help when it’s feed prep season. Add it up — and don’t discount the need for that classic bucket setup — and the little CAT skid steer looks like a good all year round proposition.

made this kind of machine a real swiss army knife for contractors. As well as the usual buckets and dozer blades people usually associate with skid steers, CAT offer a range of trenchers for drainage work, post hole borers and augers. When it’s time to clear land the brushcutters which the 239D can mount are a terror to gorse and scrub, and can be followed up with stump grinders, mulchers and then

Now, many rural contractors who wish to expand their operations into land reclamation or clearance are looking to this extra ‘pair of hands’ as an effective tool that offers multiple roles. Take for example the CAT 239D skid steer — a small and compact unit which will be right at home in confined spaces, but which packs an arsenal of tools and a whole lot of hydraulic power. Easy to use and simple to transport, this skid steer can take the place of larger machines where a full sized dozer or front-load digger could either not fit in or could damage the ground. For just this reason, the 239D can come specced

A Blue Do for cancer care It’s Blue September again and the Prostate Cancer Foundation is getting the message out to Kiwi men to get checked for prostate cancer.

This year it is all about having a ‘Blue Do’ so get organised with some mates, colleagues and family, and arrange an event to spread the message and raise some funds to support the foundation. Farmers, tradies, workmates and radio hosts are all getting in on the act. You can check out upcoming events and get ideas for your own Blue Do on the website. Perhaps you fancy a blue breakfast, a blue barbecue or a blueberry bake off? Or organise a Blue Friday like many workplaces organise. It really gets people involved in dressing up, preparing some novelty food, and focusses on awareness of prostate cancer. With one in eight men getting prostate cancer, catching the disease early and getting effective treatment saves lives. That’s the central message this Blue September. Family members can be a great incentive and encouragement for the men in their family to go to the GP and get a check. Don’t leave it to the men — they are often a bit slack in looking after their health. If they won’t go to get a check themselves, make an appointment and get them along. New mastitis antibiotic A new ready to use antibiotic formulation for treating mastitis that took seven years to develop, register and launch is now available for New Zealand dairy farmers. Penethaject RTU has a unique formulation that requires no pre-mixing. It is the first time such a formulation has been developed anywhere in the world. “Penethaject RTU will make it easier for farmers to effectively treat clinical mastitis, a condition affecting 10-20 per cent of New Zealand’s five million dairy cows every year,” says Bayer dairy veterinarian Dr Ray Castle. “The active ingredient known as Penethamate, previously came in powder form and had to be mixed together with a liquid to create an injectable solution. “Developing a pre-formulated version had been a scientific challenge for many years until scientists in Bayer New Zealand’s laboratories worked with Otago University to create a stable formulation, something that had never been achieved before.” Dr Castle says Penethamate is stable long term as a powder, but not as a liquid. “The challenge was to create a liquid formulation in which the active ingredient remained stable and active without caking or sticking together in clumps. “It is a world first and confirms New Zealand’s position as a leader in dairy science.” Dr Castle says the chemistry in Penethaject, a form of penicillin allows

Dr Ray Castle at Moovimbee Farms

antibiotic concentrations to build up in a cow’s udder. These concentrations are up to 10 times higher than those achieved by other penicillin formulations. This allows the antibiotic to directly work on the mastitis bacteria, particularly Streptococcus uberis - the most common bacteria responsible for mastitis in New Zealand. Once the mastitis is treated, the antibiotic quickly leaves the milk, allowing the cow to be back in milk production, in some cases within 48 hours. “As farmers head into the milking season they need to be particularly alert to the clinical signs of mastitis, which include changes in the colour and consistency of the milk, and/or redness, heat, and swelling in the udder,” says Dr Castle.

Therapy for osteoarthritis Last edition we discussed how high levels of chondroitin sulphate (CS) help joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). An excellent 2010 study ‘Chondroitin sulphate in the treatment of osteoarthritis’ (Y. Herotin, PhD) identified the actions of CS on arthritic joints. They identified over 30 positive changes in arthritic joints with high doses of chondroitin sulphate. It is worth noting that the dosages in the study were much higher than in many joint products. Most products have around 250mg of CS whereas the study used 800mg or more. I generally commence therapy even higher with 1500mg of high grade chondroitin. The anti-inflammatory effects of high doses of CS appear to inhibit inflammatory chemicals including prostaglandins and COX-2 enzymes. These are the targets of antiinflammatory drugs which is why they can be effective at reducing pain. Secondly high levels of CS appear to slow the rate of cartilage loss. One suggested mechanism is that CS appears to protect the chondrocyte cells responsible for maintaining cartilage. Research showed that CS can actually prevent the death of chondrocytes which is the real driver behind cartilage loss. Thirdly high levels of CS appear

STUMPCHIPPING & MULCHING

to be anabolic — it appears to be able to generate new cartilage. The mechanisms here seems to be that CS stimulates chondrocyte cells to increase production of collagen and other compounds needed to make new cartilage. By way of example I have been helping someone with OA in her knees, back and hands. She had been using a joint supplement heavily weighted towards glucosamine rather than chondroitin. We added a supplement with high levels of CS with noticeable improvements on this combination with less pain and more mobility. I am sure the extra curcumin and Omega 3 all helped with these improvements. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Caring for your radiator Crawford Radiator Centre situated at 56 Corunna Bay, Napier is owned by Leigh Crawford and was started some 30 years ago by her husband Brent. Brent died two-and-a-half years ago and I decided to carry on the business myself as it was his baby. I was a pharmacy girl and when he was diagnosed with a lung disease I came in and we worked together, Brent on the tools with me in the office. Then the table turned and life became the other way round. He taught me well. Our logo is ‘The best little core house in Corunna Bay’. People need to be aware that a lot of substandard products have become available online and I only sell the top three brands of new radiators and they all come with a 12 or 24 month warranty. I can check and analyse what is needed to be done and work with the radiator out of the vehicle. I do soldering of copper brass, truck radiators, alloy or aluminium with plastic tanks, recore and repair. I can test tanks for leaks and flow then can take the necessary action to restore them. Two hundred radiators are in stock with an overnight service available if I

do not have what is needed, and there is no charge for freight. My prices are competitive. I would rather sell a good product and know my clients are being looked after. If you maintain your radiator your vehicle will be that much more cared for. Products like coolant or antifreeze are radiator conditioners and using distilled water is beneficial because normal tap water is full of calcium and blocks up the radiator. I work on old cars and vintage vehicles as well. I have just done a 1937 flat deck and a Studebaker — it is certainly a job with lots of variety. I am very customer focussed and believe in caring for my clients. If the tools are going the answer phone will be on. Brent always said there are three types of service — good, cheap and fast — and you can pick any two. Cheap and fast won’t be good — fast and good won’t be cheap.
