In the end it was the use of creative cuts and innovative techniques that separated the best chefs from the rest by the smallest of margins. The field was narrowed down from 73 entrants, who created an original dish using one of the Silver Fern Farms’ cuts of lamb, beef or venison. Introducing a World First in Electric Fencing Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Becoming self-employed means taking on extra responsibility such as GST, ACC, income tax and health and safety, and it’s important to get good advice,” says David. “There are employment agreements that farmers can access, for example Federated Farmers have contracts that are updated regularly based on farmer feedback and any changes in the industry.”

Sharemilkers and farm owners discussed how to establish successful partnerships at a series of events run by DairyNZ and Federated Farmers at the Take Time Before You Sign workshops held recently. DairyNZ project lead Angie Fisher says the events provided information to farmers looking at entering sharemilking and contract milking agreements for next season, or wanting to improve current relationships. “There were 3570 sharemilkers, both herd owning and variable order, and over 1000 contract milkers in 201516. Alongside the farm owners they work with, this is a substantial group of farmers,” says Angie. “Farmers signalled that they treat sharemilking agreements as a businessto-business partnership. Both parties are highly engaged with current issues and willing to share their knowledge, experience and solutions.” There is a lot to consider when entering a sharemilking arrangement – it helps to have a systematic approach to ensure all aspects of entering into an agreement are covered before anything is signed and that you are familiar with resources and key people in your region. “Going in with your eyes wide open and understanding your responsibilities clearly will help improve the outcome for everyone.” David Hosking, a farm owner from Te Kauwhata has acted as a mentor through DairyNZ’s Dairy Connect in matters relating to contract understanding

Jonathan Hamlet Hawke’s Bay Villa Maria regional viticulturist inspects the vines
V
illa Maria has a long history in the New Zealand wine making industry and Hawke’s Bay regional viticulturist Jonathan Hamlet is proud to be part of ensuring the business is sustainable in every way possible. Jonathan oversees all the vineyards in the Hawke’s Bay area and has been a part of the Villa Maria team for almost 10 years. He was initially drawn to the company because of their passion and dedication to making high quality wine. “The motivation for me to work for Villa Maria was their absolute dedication to making the best quality wine that they can. It is also great working for a family business. The motivations are quite different [to other businesses] and are very long-term which is really exciting.
“We have the quality, innovation and sustainability. “For us that includes all aspects of sustainability — how we treat our land, our energy efficiency in our business systems and being financially sustainable. We have been in business for 50 years and have every intention to be in business for another 50 years, so we have to make sure our methods are profitable and we are given the chance to reinvest in the company to make sure it is successful.” Villa Maria is owned by Sir George Fistonich — the only New Zealander knighted for his services in the New Zealand wine industry. Because Villa Maria is a 100 per cent New Zealand owned and operated business, their long-term sustainability

philosophy stretches beyond the economics of their company and overflows into the vineyards and in turn their wine. “We are very lucky to be run as a family business which means Sir George Fistonich has a motivation to leave something for the next generation. “All of our wine growing vineyards are sustainable wine growing accredited and we have 27 per cent of our company owned vineyards organically certified by Biogro NZ. We have been growing vineyards organically for 15 years and our very first organic blocks were in the Hawke’s Bay. “This developed into a desire to grow in a different way and has evolved as a market drive in terms of consumers wanting more sustainable products. “For us, the organic side of things is about creating natural solutions to growing challenges. An organic block cannot have any synthetic or manmade input so we can’t use synthetic fertilisers. We recycle our grape marc and mix it with cow manure and woodchip as compost to improve the soil quality.” They also plant two beneficial flower species which attract insects that eat a particular pest caterpillar. “By planting the flowers we have natural predators which become a source of biocontrol without the need for any pesticides. “It’s taught us a lot of good growing techniques that we have expanded out to our non-organic vineyards so it has certainly improved our growing. Villa Maria is dedicated to producing top quality grapes and wine with sustainable methods
that, between regions and even within regions, it really reflects the area it is grown in. “Sustainability is such an ingrained part of how we do business so in the vineyards we have a focus on the land and the vines themselves.” Jonathan believes the New Zealand wine industry
is heading in a positive direction. “It has seen really good growth as an export industry in the last decade. It is a challenge for New Zealand because we are so far from the market and we are an export nation so we need to continually strive to produce only quality and premium products.”

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES
BY ANN MORGAN Tom and Lucia Gordon live on Clifton Station which is 2000 acres of mixed terrain consisting of sheep and beef, forestry, organic barley, and recently a nectarine and peach orchard, planted for the local market.
T
he property is on cliffs looking out over the Hawkes Bay area and has been in the Gordon family for more than 150 years. Many original buildings are still on the land today including Tom and Lucia’s house which is the original shearer’s quarters and the homestead Tom’s folks live in which was built in 1901. “It is wonderful living here, I love the history and being a part of the family, it is amazing,” says Lucia.
Lucia grew up in Havelock North in town but her grandmother had a farm which she visited often and rode horses. The couple are childhood friends and hung out together until they were around 12-years-old. “We rekindled our friendship when we were around 26 years old and married this year. “I am a chef at an organic restaurant in town and Tom farms the property with his dad. We have 300 Wagyu and Angus
Tom Gordon’s family have lived on Clifton Station for more than 150 years cattle and we fatten around 3-4000 lambs each year. “Each day is different for Tom. He can be docking, crutching, moving cattle or doing fencing. In summer there are no sheep as they are sold by then so he
focusses on maintaining the property — there is always something to do.“ The family also have a sheep show which attracts tourists off the cruise ships and others touring the country. “The sheep shows are in the wool

shed with ewes and lambs. It is a shearing show, and he does demonstrations with the dogs and discusses the history of New Zealand sheep and farming. The visitors get to experience the historic woolshed. “Every year we keep lambs for the show and continually turnover stock, and we shear each year. The lambs come in May and leave in November and the shearing gang comes in September. “The calves born this year are sold as weaners in autumn and the heifers are kept for breeding, depending what the market is doing. We also have forestry on the farm. At the moment it is being harvested and then it will be replanted and harvested again in 30 years time. “We have a one year old and one on the way — our goal would be to keep the farm for our children. We are always trying to better the place for the next generation and find new ways to live off the property. “We were thinking of other ways we could utilise the farm as it is such a good spot with lots of tourism as it is and we thought glamping could be a good idea as it is becoming popular.” The couple purchased a large safari style tent and worked on building the site over the winter. “The tent has full solar power, an outdoor shower and bath with hot water and full cooking facilities and overlooks the Maraetotara river. We have aimed it as a couples’ getaway — it is high end natural camping,” says Lucia. “ We would love to grow the glamping business and have more sites around the farm with more activities such as clay bird shooting and walks. There are so many things for people to enjoy. You feel like you are a million miles from anything.

It is important to us to be the caretakers of something full of family history, knowing all the people behind us who worked so hard to keep this place as to what it is today. “In the homestead and the old buildings you can feel the history. It is like so many people before me have been on these different spots that I walk on today. “There are a couple of books written about Clifton Station — it is steeped in history. Cape Country is the newest book written by Tom’s aunty Jenny Carlyon, and my father-in-law Angus, also wrote a book ten or so years ago. It is called ‘In the Shadow of the Cape’.” PROUD SPONSOR OF
“I have learnt a lot from Tom by asking questions. The plan is for me to help him more in the future. It will be a really nice change. “I love country life, and having the freedom and my neighbours, and being outside. I look out the window and there are cows and views and nature. We are lucky but at the same time there is a lot of work and we are aware we just have to keep plodding on — but there is plenty of reward.”

The native choice
The Native Plant Nursery was first established in Taupo and has been growing native plants since 1961. The company then branched out to Waiuku in South Auckland and has now established a nursery in Christchurch on Marshland Road. We supply quality plants for landscaping and ecological restoration (with seed sourced from your region), as well as farming revegetation and general gardening requirements at wholesale prices. We also offer a range of exotic species to fast growing shelter belt and firewood plants. Plant grades range from seedlings in root trainer packs through to large grade two-metre trees. This range is complimented with a large selection of plant growth and protection products. New Zealand’s native plants are part of our heritage and many of them are only found here. If you have an area on your farm or small block that is
overgrown with weed species, don’t be overwhelmed by the thought or restoring it with native plants, the process is actually very simple and straightforward. Cutting out or removing some of the weed species in selected areas and leaving some in place to remove later will provide shelter and protection for the native species to grow and become established. It is a lot easier to maintain the regenerating weeds in a smaller area rather than removing the entire lot in one attempt. Herbicides are one option but also consider just pulling or cutting them out. We also work very closely with a reputable UMF manuka breeding

Blue for you Mark Hadlow is a Blue September ambassador and has a special message for our rural men. “I’m a firm believer that prevention is better than cure and I am amazed at the number of men who seem to think you don’t need the ‘blue glove check’ post 50 or even younger,” said Mark. “Yes sure the PSA blood test is a good start but why not go the whole hog and face your fear and get a check.” Mark says this is not scaremongering. “Too many rural men are diagnosed too late and when that happens, the outcomes are not good. Ask your doctor to do the check — it’s no big deal and can be a lifesaver. The relief and the joy of the knowledge of a normal prostate is outstanding and such a great feeling.” Mark says you owe it to yourself, your family and your stress levels. “My doctor and I joke about it — how to start your day with a surprise, a blue glove surprise. It’s not a laughing matter at all, however some men are too scared or anxious to do it and we need to help them. So really it’s up to the ‘blue glovers’ of Blue September to challenge a mate and say ‘face your fear’ and get relief. “There’s nothing brave in pretending that prostate cancer can’t happen to you. Over 3,000 men are diagnosed and 600 die each year from prostate cancer. Many of them could have been diagnosed earlier by getting gloved and had a much better outcome. So go on, get it done and smack

fear outa the park.” The prostate is a small gland, normally about the size of a walnut. It sits just below the bladder and surrounds the upper part of the urethra — the tube that carries urine from the bladder and semen from the testicles to the outside of the body through the penis. Prostate cancer is the presence of cancer cells or a cancerous growth in or on the gland. In many cases, prostate cancer is slow growing and having it won’t affect you, but in some cases, the cancer is more aggressive and can spread to your bones, liver and lungs.
Wool for sleeping comfort VIP Beds — for Very Important Pets — has been making extraordinary wool-filled beds for 25 years from a small woolshed on the outskirts of Waipukurau, with very few days without orders. Ex-veterinary nurse, Barbie Cassidy, is helped by three saddlers and local women making three kinds of beds for dogs and two varieties of pillows for people (or passengers). What is extraordinary about these products is the process that the wool undergoes for her indoor dog bedding and pillows. Strong wool is blown through a centrifugal force to form bulky balls, which do not flatten and keep their shape and buoyancy for both dogs and people to enjoy. The wool balls massage naturally and the therapeutic effect helps alleviate arthritic pain in old dogs and acts as an arthritis prevention in young dogs. The VIP beds are oval nests, covered in tartan cotton and built on a base of New Zealand wool carpet. Mutt Mattresses are fat mats for dogs, ranging from a banana box bed for mini schnauzer, perfect for in the car or at home, to a Great Dane size. For working dogs and those kept out of the house, Tough Stuff double-stacked mats are filled with long fleece wool, designed to flatten. The only care needed is an occasional hour on the roof of the kennel to dry out on
a fine day. Testimonials pour in, attesting to the improved health and well-being of these hard working dogs. “The only complaint has been that the dogs do not want to get up in the mornings!” said Barbie. Prices range from $45 to $55 for Tough Stuff; from $45 to $250 for Mutt Mattresses and from $120 to $480 for VIP Beds. “It is money well spent on helping dogs live and work longer and more freely.” For more information, phone 06 858 9766, email vipbeds@xtra.co.nz or visit www.vipbeds.co.nz.

Taking pressure off sore joints
Sometimes health problems can become a sort of vicious cycle. Osteoarthritis can cause significant joint pain which limits mobility and can reduce the ability to exercise. Reduced mobility leads to weight gain which further reduces mobility and add extra stress to arthritic joints. I have had many clients in this situation and it can be very distressing. When someone is overweight and has arthritis in weight-bearing joints my goal with diet is initially just to create a healthier diet. If we just focus on weight loss this can create another cycle of yo-yo dieting which has limited benefits and is a cause of psychological stress. Every meal should be nutrient dense with anti-inflammatory fats and regular protein. A nutrient dense breakfast could be eggs or wholegrain oats with freshly ground flaxseeds, dark berries and good yoghurt. Morning tea could be a piece of fruit and some raw almonds. Lunch could be a fish and avocado salad with olive oil and cider vinegar dressing. Afternoon tea homemade hummus and vegetable sticks. For dinner some protein, lots of raw and cooked low starch vegetables
with anti-inflammatory oils such as olive, avocado or coconut. To make a difference we need to start to break the cycle. We start with a nutrient dense diet that is at the same time antiinflammatory that will over time result in weight loss. Supplements are very important and I add these like a 3 legged stool. Firstly we add antioxidants to slow the rate of cartilage loss. We then reduce inflammation with fish oils and curcumin (from turmeric) then add joint compounds especially chondroitin at over 800mg daily. These combined measure help reduce pain, reduce weight, improve mobility and the real payoff are improvements in energy and general health. Fee free top contact me to discuss your situation. Abundant Health Bettaflex Super Joint Formula
A pasture threat alert Chilean needle grass is an invasive pest plant that is threatening agricultural production land in dry east coast areas of New Zealand. The plant currently infests approximately 3,700ha of land in Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough and Canterbury, but 15 million hectares of land across the country are at risk of infestation. Known by the acronym CNG, it reduces pasture and crop yields and the availability of stock feed due to unpalatability to livestock when seeding. Its sharp seeds have a needle-like tip which can penetrate the skin and muscle of animals, causing welfare issues and damaging the hide and carcass. An infestation of CNG often requires a change in farming practice as stock must be removed from infested areas from late October until March to avoid contact with seeds. CNG is most easily identifiable in November and December, when distinctive panicle seeds emerge. These seeds have a dark purple seed head and a long, kinked awn. CNG is most likely to be found on dry, hard hill country and in areas with light soil, heavily grazed pasture or bare ground. It is spread by the movement of contaminated vectors such as machinery, stock and feed. For this reason, you should also check for CNG
along driveways and access tracks, around stock yards and buildings, and anywhere hay has been fed out. Check your property for CNG today. Early detection is vital to stop the spread. If you suspect you have found CNG, contact your regional council immediately.
What is Bettaflex?
• Bettaflex is a joint support formula to promote healthy joint cartilage function. • Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Each capsule of Bettaflex contains 382mg of high grade chondroitin, 425mg of glucosamine and 50mg of curcumin extract.
BEST BUY! $79.95 for 3 bottles free freight or 1 bottle for $28.95 plus $4.99 postage
How can Bettaflex help?
• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.
John Arts comments:
“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Holiday Guide Spring into summer It’s spring in the Hawke’s Bay. The daffodils are out and the holiday season is almost upon us. Now is the perfect time to explore everything the Hawke’s Bay has to offer, and with a well-established wine culture, make sure you sample a glass or two of local vino whilst lapping up that sun. The Hawke’s Bay is also home to two gannet colonies at Cape Kidnappers. This 13-hectare reserve is managed by the Department of Conservation and includes the Saddle and Black Reef gannet colonies. Both are closed to public access, however the Black Reef colony can be viewed from the beach. The Plateau colony allows easy viewing of nesting gannets and offers good panoramic views of the headland. This colony is located on private land and visitors are reminded to cooperate with the landowners by keeping to the defined track and not disturbing stock. Hawke’s Bay Farmyard Zoo is known as another leading attraction in the area and provides a unique atmosphere and educational experience with three hectares of limestone walkways. Take the whole family and get up close and
personal with the animals. Try your hand at feeding many of them for an experience you won’t forget. If you are looking for a way to unwind, why not check out the Morere Hot Springs as well for a relaxing soak and to soothe the soul. The springs are set in 364 hectares of native bush and managed by the Department of Conservation, with accommodation and a multitude of walking tracks located nearby. The reserve is also one of the last remaining tracts of lowland rainforest on the east coast of New Zealand. The healing water has travelled for thousands of years before making it’s way out of the ground at Morere in the adjacent rainforest. Although the history is rich, the facilities are modern and comfortable yet secluded. There are also a number of well connected cycle trails in the Hawke’s Bay and what better way to soak up the sun and see the scenery? The quiet back roads and settled weather make
this a great place to see the sights whilst keeping fit. So whatever it is you are looking to do this summer, whether it is with your
family, on your own or with someone special, be sure to make the most of the natural features the Hawke’s Bay has to offer.

Rural security measures Holiday time is a prime time for thieves, especially on rural properties, and often just a few simple precautions taken around the property can work as a deterrent. Sometimes expensive security systems act as a signal to burglars that there is something worth stealing. A more simple option is to keep the most expensive items locked away in a secure place out of sight. Always be careful about who you invite onto the property, for example contractors, before you go away and who you tell your holiday plans too. Word can get out if you have something particularly interesting stored on your property. It can pay to leave a vehicle parked in the driveway to give the appearance that you are home if possible and this puts a question mark in the burglar’s mind.
Setting lighting timers can be a useful way to deter thieves also. If they have spent time scoping out the place beforehand, they will be uncertain as to whether anyone is actually home or not. Tell your neighbours you are going to be away and ask if they can clear the letterboxes or keep the lawns mowed if you will be away for a significant time, so the house doesn’t look empty from the road. If you have livestock, someone should be checking on your property daily, but even if you don’t, it is important to make sure someone is keeping an eye on your place for

A top adventure playground Whanganui was recently rated one of New Zealand’s top 10 destinations by Experience Oz and NZ, a leading online travel booking site highlighting the best of the regions. For those of us that live and play here this is no real surprise at all. For decades Whanganui has been one of the North Island’s adventure playgrounds for all sorts of activity given the climate, the beaches (yes, we have three and are a coastal city), the wonderful Whanganui River and the Whanganui National Park. Residents enjoy a temperate climate with mean temperatures of 9.4°C in winter and 18.2°C in summer with an average 2100 hours of sunshine per annum — slightly above the national average. Whanganui is also very central and easily accessible for most — within three hours drive for the lower North Island from most cities and an hour’s flight from Auckland. The city’s heritage is obvious when visiting — from the stunning architecture and buildings to the Durie Hill Underground Elevator and Memorial Tower, and numerous marae and taonga (treasures) in the Whanganui Regional Museum.

Sicily is a wonderland for tourists looking for something new, or old — in fact the best sights are from the ancient world. In Agrigento’s Valley of Temples you’ll see one of the three most perfect temples in the Greek world. At Selinunte you will find one of the largest of all known Greek temples. Villa Romana del Casale in Enna, with more than 3,500 square metres of mosaics, is one of the best-preserved villas anywhere and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So are the twin towns of Ragusa and Modica for representing Europe’s zenith of Baroque art. Both the stunning mosaics and the exquisite cloister at Monreale are considered highlights of European art, and the collections at Palermo’s Archeological Museum rank it as one of Italy’s best. Natural wonders have their place, with Mount Etna Europe’s tallest active volcano. And you’ll love Sicily for its local culture and spirited people. Meet a family who show us around their farm, coming face to face with the grand buffalo that produce their mozzarella. The farm produces a variety of meats and in their restaurant we taste their products during a leisurely long lunch — just one interesting occasion as we travel around Sicily for two weeks, at a gentle pace. Our regular clients choose to travel with us when ‘quality is better than quantity’. They thank us for immersing

Animals on holiday The much looked forward to year-end holiday season can be exciting but also a time of anxiety for your pets, not to mention yourself, if you have to leave them at home whilst you are away. Our furry friends don’t like change and often don’t enjoy their family going away or having visitors suddenly invade their own space. Careful planning may reduce holiday stress for both you and your loved animals. Now is the time to plan for the care of the cat and the dog, not forgetting the birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, horses and other furry family members. The anxiety of leaving pets behind can lead people to procrastinate, because you are so worried that your pets won’t be okay that you put off trying to plan for it, but it is important to arrange things early. The best option is to have someone reliable stay in your home, but local catteries or doggy daycares are a great choice, unless you have a sitter who can come daily and check on them. Don’t forget the birds will need their water and seed checked on a regular basis as well. Once your animal care is organised you can relax and think about your much-anticipated vacation. It is true that cats are easier to care for than dogs, but many people still think that a bowl of dry food and a neighbour changing water every couple of days is proper
cat sitting, however house cats still require daily visits from someone who can give them interaction. A pet sitter should not just scoop poop and refill water and food bowls. They need to see your cats every day and check on their wellbeing, and ensure the food is being eaten. A dog sitter carries more responsibility and caring for your dog means more than walking him around the block, they are responsible for the entire well-being of the animal in their charge. All the other animals also need fresh water and care. Ensure your sitter knows the needs of your animal community. Like humans, animals enjoy company too, especially if they are family pets. Make sure your extra family additions are well cared for this holiday season and that they enjoy their holiday too.

As of December, Irri-Max Ltd will be based from a temporary office at their main road yard 2318 Takapau Road. Feel free to drop in to discuss your requirements over a coffee, or request a farm visit. Clem and Desiree Powell are looking forward to being nearer to their dairy and arable farming clients and fitting in to the local CHB scene. Clem has already been a member of the CHB Aero Club for some years. Irri-Max phone numbers will remain the same, 06 842 2212 and 027 599 9273.

Clem and Desiree Powell began with a focus on supplying products for the Dairy Effluent market with imported Ferrari and Rovatti pumps from Italy, fitted to frames and pipework they build in store. Irri-Max secured an agreement for direct import of Sime irrigation guns and sprinklers and hold good stocks of parts, both for current as well as older models. Italian-made pressed steel couplings of the Bauer and Ferrari types are distributed all over NZ, including through many well-known irrigation companies. Special press formers and swaggers allow Irri-Max to manufacture nonstandard hose tails for MDOD pipe. Irri-Max have also built diesel pump units for effluent contracting, frost protection and other uses throughout their trading history, but 2012 gave an opportunity to become NZ distributor for diesel pump units and hard hose reel irrigators from Italian irrigator manufacturer Ferbo Srl. Clem had previously had experience with the company and found their machines to be strongly made with excellent features. Irri-Max has since collaborated with Ferbo to produce special Smart Reel Hard Hose Irrigators for the effluent market here in NZ. The computer controlled diesel winch engine gives perfect wind-

Managing farm risks WorkSafe’s data from 2015 shows that experienced farmers carrying out routine jobs with vehicles are getting caught out. In 2015, there were 19 fatalities on farms — 16 of those involved vehicles. In more than 50 per cent of the incidents, farmers were aged over 55 and driving vehicles on sloping or uneven ground. “These were mature and experienced people doing jobs they would have done many times before,” said Al McCone, WorkSafe’s Agriculture Programme manager. “Examining vehicle fatalities from the last three years, we find that often the driver/rider had set out to do a fairly routine task like spraying or stock work.” The incidents had some common factors like operators or others being hit by the vehicle, or being killed during a rollover. “To keep yourself safe make sure the vehicle won’t move when you get out, and wear seatbelts when in the cab or roll frame. Extra care is needed when working on or near slopes, especially on tracks with steep drop-offs.” Al McCone, The quads involved in WorkSafe’s Agriculture Programme Manager the fatalities ranged in age and size, and were often in sound Farmers, both employers and mechanical condition, however, low tyre employees, are also more likely to be tread depth and under-inflated or uneven working alone at busy times, so having tyre pressure was noted as a possible a plan in place for lone workers means contributing factor in some cases. that if anything goes wrong, the alarm Often the vehicle had slid on a slope could be raised. and a number of incidents involved quad “Like most risk management bikes overturning into drains, ditches processes, it doesn’t need to be or waterways. complicated,” said Mr McCone. “There are a number of solutions that “Good practice like keeping at least one metre from a stream or culvert send out ‘man down’ or just location edges, stopping and dismounting to signals. Easy safety

with John Franklin
Safety is easy From my farming and forestry backgrounds, I know exactly where farmers today are poised towards health and safety regulations. Born and bred on a sheep and beef farm in southern Hawke’s Bay. I was 35 when we sold the farm in 1989 and I started in forestry on wages for a short time, then got an opportunity to start and run my own forest harvesting business. Nine years into this I also started training and assessing with other forestry crews, and carried on for the next 12 years around NZ. I left forestry in 2008 and came back into agriculture, training and assessing a National Certificate for Agricultural Contracting — Crop Production and Harvesting. I had discovered that a lot of agricultural employers had nothing in place regarding health and safety. Businesses that employ staff should have a fit-for-purpose working health and safety management system. Merely having a good system will not achieve good health and safety. Systems need to be implemented with rigour and consistency. We are today working under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. I understand from talking to farmers
in general that you don’t have a real problem around health and safety if implemented in the right way and policed practically, with business owners under a ‘common sense’ approach. I don’t believe that NZ’s common sense approach has gone at all — and I still work to it today towards the education and understanding with health and safety management. Problems we are faced with today are that employers are employing people from out of their industry, that lack the basic common sense skills around managing and operating tools of the trade while at work managing terrain, multitasking, inattention, phone use and texting while operating farm vehicles and machinery, etc. This whole health and safety set up and delivery is a process and is just not a five-minute or a one-day event. It takes time to cement culture change and run an effective system with your team. I have been delivering health and safety systems to farmers over the last eight years with a practical approach and ‘common sense’ attitude with excellent outcomes.

RURAL CONTRACTORS

Contractors save time When living in a rural environment ensuring you have the right contractor for your particular needs can save a lot of time, worry and money. Getting recommendations from your friends, family and neighbours of contractors they have used as word of mouth is often the best recommendation you can get. Contractors perform many different tasks including fencing, plumbing, drainage, hay and silage making, planting crops and demolition and rubbish removal on properties. Ask the contractor about other jobs they have completed in the area if you would like to see work they have previously done. When needing advice on changes you are making to your land, ensure your contractor understands the local terrain. Communication is important. Check the contractor is qualified and has proved themselves to be fully capable in providing expert contracting services for your particular project whether it be in a rural, residential or commercial project. Ask if they have guarantees on their workmanship and check on how good their attention to detail is. If it is rubbish removal, site preparation including stripping and excavation, metal and topsoil fill, drain laying, hole drilling, plumbing, rural track or road forming and maintenance, the redevelopment or removal of orchard, a contractor should also be able to remove and dispose of any rubbish from the job. Get a quote when hiring a contractor. Contractors can often save you time and money as they supply all the equipment necessary and come with experience and knowledge saving you a lot of heartache and frustration as often people who try and do it themselves do not realise what can go wrong and just the cost of the correct equipment can big very expensive. If it is silage and hay you need help with, these can be produced in large or

Using free nitrogen
Sustainable economic and environmentally friendly food production systems can be established as long as the right balance of soil health is achieved first. It is common practice to set a specific production target and then throw in all manner of inputs to obtain a specific production target. Qlabs start from soil level. In order to achieve sustainability the first component of your farming system must take priority. At Qlabs we treat all essential elements with equal importance as they all have an effect on your system’s ability to
produce a profit. Qlabs’ approach utilises the Advanced Albrecht Ratio Theory of fertiliser application. Soils are tested in our Hawke’s Bay laboratory and a recommendation is given. This adjusts levels of the essential nutrients — sulphur, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium, boron, iron, manganese, copper, zinc and cobalt — to optimum levels. As the soil fertility Client’s Lucerne grown organically, approximately five years old, never been sprayed.

between the carbon cycle and the nitrogen cycle. If we fertilise our soils using the Advanced Albrecht Ratio Theory, as the soil health and fertility increases, so the carbon cycle will increase. Free N is converted to plant available N by the biological activity within the soil. This biological activity is part of the nitrogen cycle and the carbon cycle, which is a synergistic relationship. As the carbon cycle increases, free N is tapped into and utilised at a higher rate. The cost of achieving this is your fertiliser budget. By using this approach we can help you manage your soil to act like a sponge, drawing up N from the environment. The Advanced Albrecht system of soil nutrition is gaining popularity with farmers and is available here in New Zealand. Email now for an information booklet info@qlabs.co.nz or call 0800 857733.

Fungi, bacteria and chlorine dioxide by David Law
It is impossible to totally eradicate unwanted pathogens from our environment, while most of the time they quite happily live below the ‘economic impact’ line, it is not until all the conditions are at optimum that problems arise. Getting to the point of equilibrium is our goal, the point we can happily live alongside the bacteria or fungi so they do their job without harming ours. Our adversary is extremely resilient, therefore management is the key. In bacteria, the enzymes are located just inside the cellular membrane (known as prokaryotic) and it’s these enzymes we need to destroy. In fungi and protozoa, the enzyme systems are located deeper in the cell and therefore slightly harder to destroy. These are known as the eukaryotic type. Fungi have a worldwide distribution and grow in a wide range of habitats, including extreme environments such as deserts or in deep sea sediments. Because of their small size and a secretive lifestyle, most fungi are inconspicuous. They can even survive the intense UV and cosmic radiation encountered during space travel. Along with bacteria, fungi are the major decomposers in most terrestrial (land based) and some aquatic ecosystems. As decomposers, they play an essential role in nutrient cycling,
degrading organic matter to inorganic molecules, which can then re-enter anabolic metabolic pathways in plants or other organisms. That’s the good news. The bad news is that many fungi are parasites on plants, animals (including humans) and other fungi. Serious pathogens of many cultivated plants cause extensive damage and losses to agriculture, horticulture and forestry industries. Some are carnivorous and are predators of nematodes which they capture using an array of specialised structures, such as constricting rings or adhesive nets. Some fungi can cause serious diseases in humans, several of which may be fatal if untreated, and fungal spores are also a cause of allergies. Fungi from different taxonomic groups can evoke allergic reactions. Therefore the questions posed are: • Can we introduce a substance which reduces pathogen levels to within a manageable level? • What treatment does not have
adverse effects on the environment or result in resistant forms of disease? • What treatment does not leave undesirable residues? • What treatment is economically viable? • Is chlorine dioxide the solution? Let’s take a look. The compound chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is not a recent discovery; it was first produced in 1811 and has been well-known as a disinfectant for many years. The manufacture however has been complicated until recent years, when a way of producing active stabilised ClO2 suspended in solution was discovered (here in New Zealand). This now allows for safe production and
use of this multipurpose compound. ClO2 penetrates the cell wall of target pathogens and destroys their enzymes, their life force. It does this through oxidation. Although ClO2 is an oxidising agent, there are no reports in scientific literature of toxicity by skin contact or when ingested, this makes for safe handling when used as an agrichemical. Because of its mode of action there is little risk of disease building resistance, and because ClO2 is broken down under UV there is no residue or withholding period. This product looks to be a useful tool in the control of fungal and bacterial diseases, in both viticulture and horticulture, when used at key times through the season.
