A Countdown for Kaipara

by Brian Eastwood

A major change has come to the Kaipara shopping scene, with the overnight emergence this week of a Countdown Supermarket in Dargaville

“It is part of the changeover for Progressive Enterprises from Woolworths stores to Countdown as one regional brand and it also comes with 3,000 price cuts on a huge range of products on our shelves,” said Dargaville store manager, Paul Ah Chong. Local firm, Higgins Coatings, had painters last week working on an elevated platform blacking out the Woolworths sign on the Victoria Street frontage and on the car park side. Last Sunday night the shop still carried the Woolworth’s branding, but by 8am on Monday, it had been transformed with the change to outside signage being completed, ticketing in the store and even the changing of uniforms with the 98 staff now decked out in light blue shirts. Mr Ah Chong said that along with the overall 3,000 price cuts the new branding will bring to the store, there will be a month of Dargaville store-only specials. “For our customers, it’s a new shopping experience — and a new start for all our staff.” A new start too for a puzzled customer: “But… it was Woolies, just yesterday,” she muttered.

Dr Jonathan Palmer, Scientist in Residence at The Kauri Museum

“The Kauri Museum at Matakohe aims to become a world centre of excellence for preservation, research and education on all aspects of the kauri tree.” To underscore this essential mission statement, museum curator, Bet Nelly, has announced the arrival of a scientist in residence. “Internationally recognised dendrochronology specialist, Dr Jonathan Palmer, will continue significant research involving the kauri and climate change, based here in Matakohe at the museum complex,” said Ms Nelley. Dendrochronology is essentially the study of

tree rings to unlock secrets of the past, including climate change over the millennia. “Dr Palmer is the director of the Gondwana Tree-Ring Laboratory and he is involved in kauri research projects with Auckland University, Waikato University, Columbia University, Exeter University, Oxford University, Monash University and University of New South Wales,” Ms Nelley said.

The long-time Kaipara resident, caterer, market gardener and restaurateur has earned the trust from her clientele through consistent, reliable — and delicious service. Last month, Jo was the unwitting recipient of Dargaville Rotary’s Paul Harris pin, which is an expression of appreciation to those who have made a considerable contribution to their community.

“I was absolutely dumfounded,” said Jo, who was catering for a Rotary afternoon tea. “There I was, chopping carrots and sweeping the floor, when the Rotary president, Bruce, asked me into the dining room. “I was a bit too surprised to grasp what it meant but it was very nice and I feel extremely honoured.” Paul Harris, a lawyer from Chicago, founded the Rotary movement in 1905.

AGED CARE MATTERS

Giving wholehearted care to the older person The staff at Kauri Coast recently marked World Elder Abuse day. Seems terrible that it is a world wide problem, the abuse of children and older folk. What is abuse? Dictionary definitions of abuse include words like misuse, hurt, force, assail, deceive, maltreatment, insulting language, improper or excessive use. I was mildly surprised that nowhere that I looked did I find mention of power imbalances. Abuse is much less likely to occur when the parties involved share equal power. The boss that rides an employee, the playground bully, the abusive parent, are all people in positions of trust because they have power which they can choose to exercise benevolently or maliciously. At Bupa we recognise that we too are in positions of power as we undertake to care for the lives in our hands. Older, often weaker, vulnerable lives and we take our duty to this responsibility seriously. One way we monitor this is to make it clear to staff that every incident — skin tears, bruises, falls, injuries, medication errors are recorded on an accident and injury form. These are then used to investigate how the incident occurred, what the causal factor was and what actions we might take to prevent it happening again to that particular individual and to others. These statistics also go into a central data base and we can see how we track against other facilities in the Bupa group. If there is an unusually high number of incidents in any category a corrective action plan is developed and implemented. All staff are trained in abuse and neglect understanding. All care giving staff are actively encouraged to complete Stage 2 Career Force training which has an entire NZQA Unit Standard on Abuse & Neglect. When educating staff around this issue it is a pleasure to me to see their understanding when they realise that some things that are said and done but which are never thought of as abuse or neglect actually are. A tone of voice, a facial expression, an ignoring of a request, anything that we do because we have the power to do so in this setting but would not do in other settings where we do not have power, can be abusive. As a Manager I find the support and accountability from and to our Corporate Support Office invaluable. Human resources, staff training and quality support particularly. I also value and encourage feed back from those who visit our facility for any reason. Often the objective eyes are invaluable. Abuse and neglect are not tolerated at Kauri Coast. Until next time I wish you warmer weather. Darryl Rhodes, Facility Manager.

Jo Steiner is presented with Dargaville Rotary’s Paul Harris pin for making a considerable contribution to the community

The traditional rural cattle show has taken on a new dimension — thanks to the Internet Matakohe miniature Hereford breeder, Janet Poole, says for many people, access to show venues is limited by time, distance and expense. “An alternative is the virtual cattle show, held by exhibiting photos of animals via the Internet,” she said. “The idea came about in October last year, just as the New Zealand agricultural shows were getting underway. Initially it was to be a national event for breeders of miniature Herefords, but interest was shown by Australian breeders so a trans-Tasman show was proposed. “Word got out via breeders’ websites and suddenly the show had become international. The judges were from Scotland and New Zealand. “Miniature Herefords are full blood Janet Poole, from hands on, to the Internet smaller replicas of the bigger animals. Scientific window on the past As part of his activities, Dr Palmer has been involved in researching climate history entrapped in swamp kauri dated at some 30,000 years old, discovered on a Northland farm. Together with scientists in the UK at Oxford and Exeter Universities, he is studying the rings of kauri preserved in peat bogs that represent climate records dating back some 130,000 years. “The research team is focussing on the last 30,000 years, examining climate fluctuations spanning back to the end of the last Ice Age,” Dr Palmer said. “Preserved kauri trees in peat bogs store information about rapid and extreme climate change in the past. The secret is in the growth rings — wide ring widths are associated with cool dry summer conditions and narrow rings signify plunging temperatures. “Radio carbon measurements will also add value to the knowledge base.”

JULY 14 - 2011

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

A visitor of distinction It was an ebb tide on the Arapoa River tributary of the Kaipara, on a day of all too rare bright sunshine interrupting the rain bands that have been sweeping in from the Tasman. I stepped onto the deck to enjoy the warmth and there, on the shoreline, was Kotuku. He has called before, soaring down to check out the local food supply, but on this occasion he, for somehow it had to be a he, advertised his presence with a dancing display. It was just for a few seconds and, by great good fortune, just as I clicked the shutter of my small digital camera, on maximum zoom. Would that I still used the long lens on my old Pentax — but that has gone the way of the photographic technological revolution. But when I plugged the digital into the computer, the screen revealed a possible reason for the bird’s display — a Blue Heron can be seen scuttling away to the lower right of the picture on this page. August approaches Kotuku’s breeding time. Perhaps he was a little species confused? The White Heron is a relatively rare sight and it is easy to see why it enjoys an almost mythical status. Along with the extinct Huia, the snowy white feathers crowned ancient

Maori chieftains and were also sought after by pakeha. The Kotuku can be found in Australia, the South Pacific and Asia, but in New Zealand, it only breeds in Westland in the South Island — after this contained gathering, it can be found in estuaries around the country, feeding on small fish eels, frogs, shrimp, and aquatic insects, but also on rodents and smaller birds. After my Arapoa visitor had launched into the air heading down harbour, a quick check of the Internet was called for. Surprisingly, it has a huge range and goes by the classification of great egret, or the more scholarly egretta alba modesta. It is a cosmopolitan bird and is found worldwide, as far afield as India, China, Japan, as well as Australia and New Zealand. But my research led to a grisly note. Kotuku was almost wiped out by the 19th century fashion trade.

It seems milady of the distant past prized the feathers revered by Maori as ornamentation for their hats! Someone with sense called a halt to the slaughter, with only a few nests surviving in New Zealand by the 1940s. Even today, the population can be numbered in the hundreds and it is firmly on the endangered list. I also discovered that where there are Kotuku, so there may be Royal Spoonbills. And so it came to pass. The day after my illustrious shoreline visitor had departed, seven Spoonbills gathered in the shallows below my harbour vantage point. But by now the rain was back, precluding a picture. A final note, the magnificent egret has earned a place in Maori oratory with the translation ‘rare as the Kotuku’ is a descriptive of taonga. Indeed, my Arapoa encounter will always be treasured.

‘Knees up’ at Kauri Coast Rest Home If you had been passing Kauri Coast Rest Home on Hokianga Road on a recent Friday evening you might have wondered just what was happening in there. You would have heard music, there was dancing, food, fun and a good old party going on for 24 of the residents, together with their invited guests. It was Dargaville’s answer to the Rest Home’s BUPA head office, that had challenged each of their world-wide rest homes to host a week of ‘Shall we dance’ events. “We have had a variety of fun activities all week,” said Kauri Coast manager, Darryl Rhodes. “And it culminated in a dine and dance at week’s end.” The evening started with drinks and predinner nibbles before a three-course dinner in the bedecked dining room, set with specially decorated tables. Lively manager, Darryl, and assistant manager, Heather Himiona, spent the evening

helping to wait on tables. Darryl was later spotted doing the dishes. While residents and guests dined, Kevin and Pauline Mason, together with Ken and Karen Inder, gave a ballroom dancing display that must have brought back many memories for the diners. “I really enjoyed that,” said resident and diner June Edmondson. “My late husband Charles and I lived in Matakohe and sometimes we almost danced our legs off.” Guest Denis Antonio and rest home resident Johnny Jones kept the party going with some favourite old songs until the musicians and younger ones of Dargaville Dalmatian Club arrived to entertain with their Kola dancing skills. Activities co-ordinator Lorraine Steel explained, “The BUPA idea was to bring community and residents together. We took on the challenge and it has worked out well.”

New Rotary scholarship Students from Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto and Paparoa, are now eligible for a Maungaturoto and District Rotary Club scholarship of $1,000. To be known as the Presidents’ Scholarship, the award is offered by club co-presidents, Bet Nelley and Vern Dark. “This will assist students living within the club’s district to further their education and will cover the usual providers of tertiary education such as university, polytechnic, as well as any recognised course of education,” Ms Nelley said. “It is envisaged that future presidents of the club will continue to administer the scholarship.” Both presidents said that one of the purposes of Rotary is to actively encourage youth and that ‘this was another way that Rotary can help young people in our own area’. The areas of consideration when awarding the Presidents’ Scholarship Award could be involvement in community work, sport, arts or academic achievement. Applications are available at school offices or the Maungaturoto District’s Rotary Club, PO Box 65, Maungaturoto.

Print still rules for Plunket You have probably heard all the stories. The book as we know it will soon be a thing of the past, so the theory goes, because e-books are soon to take over. If you had been at the Plunket Society’s bi-annual, three-day book sale on a cold winter’s Wednesday night last week, you would have found that idea hard to believe. Set to begin at 6pm, there was a queue lined up at the doors long before they had opened. Waiting for the book lovers were ten tables laden down with about 3,000 books to suit all tastes and cheap enough to suit the leanest budget.

Held in Foster’s Arcade shop 36 in Victoria Street, a large crowd searched through the range on offer from thrillers to novels, through to children’s stories, videos and DVDs. All books were clean and in good condition. Some magazines were free for the taking. Jenny McDermott, secretary of Plunket Society’s Northern Wairoa branch, said that they are really grateful for the generosity of the Foster family. “It is a shop with better lighting than we usually have and there was much more space for us. And it’s warm. We really did appreciate it.”

e would draw attention to the unsold sections of this subdivision. In view of the great progress of the Wairoa district now visible, the actual subdivision of several large estates, the extension of the Kaihu railway to Waima and the fixing of the western route of the Northern Trunk Line, the future of Dargaville is assured and Mt Pleasant sections must rise in value. And this is further secured by the decision of the Dargaville Borough Council to float a loan for the purpose of improving its roads and making the town ‘up-to-date’. Twenty sections have been sold.

ADVANTAGES OF BEING BILINGUAL Some interesting research has been published recently noting the differences between bilingual and monolingual children. Bilingual or multilingual children seem to be better at paying attention to important information and ignoring less-important information. There is also a significant difference in the way monolingual and bilingual children process language. For example, children were asked if an illogical sentence — Apples grow on noses — was grammatically correct. Monolingual children said, “That’s silly” and couldn’t answer the question. Bilingual children said, “It’s silly, but it’s grammatically correct.” Why would this be true? It has to do with the brain’s executive control system. If you have two languages and you use them regularly, the way the brain’s networks work is that every time you speak, both languages pop up and the executive control system has to sort through everything and attend to what’s relevant in the moment. Therefore the bilinguals use that system more, and it’s that regular use that makes that system more efficient. This is true only for people who use both languages all the time. Connections are different in bilingual people’s brains. Their whole brain appears to rewire because of bilingualism and it operates more efficiently with certain kinds of problems, even non-verbal ones. Testing has shown that bilingual people are able to multi-task better than monolingual people. Neuroimaging technologies show that the brains of bilinguals and monolinguals work differently when solving

Some have never gone any further than Dargaville, some others get no farther than Auckland, and the barman and barmaid and their acquaintances have been the only folk they have seen. It is surely worthwhile giving the seven their trip home to the old folks and we ask you to do it by removing temptation. Strike out the two top lines on both ballot papers.

problems, with bilinguals using different networks and a wider range of the brain’s resources enabling them to solve problems better and faster. Evidence also shows that on average, the bilinguals showed Alzheimer’s symptoms five or six years later than those who spoke only one language. Recently the Kauri Coast Surfcasting Charitable Trust donated $1000 to Dargaville High School. The donation will go towards meeting the cost of new IT equipment and big screen in our school library. Our students have written thank you letters to the many sponsors of the surfcasting competition, and we as a school are very appreciative for this donation. Deborah Law and Ross Mullan recently came up to our school to present us with a cheque.

Customers will be cheered to see the Warehouse car park undergoing a major makeover with the potholes all fast disappearing. It will make going down to get a bargain on a wet winter’s Sunday afternoon a much more pleasant experience. And further down the street a very thorough clean up is being done at the old Rayner Motor’s site. Both jobs are being done by local firm, Harrison Contracting. The soup and sausages went like hot cakes, so to speak, at Dargaville Museum’s recent volunteer day. Manager, Pene McKenzie, says they recruited five new volunteers on the day. She is really pleased with that but says even more helpers would be welcome and could easily be fitted into their happy team of volunteers. If you have been up on Hokianga Road lately, you will have noticed some interesting additions and a new courtyard at the front of the Kauri Coast Rest Home. And when summer finally arrives you will see the Rest Home residents out there, perhaps playing petanque, sitting at the tables under the shade or just watching the world go by. Manager, Darryl Rhodes, says there will even be a swing for the grandkids. He explains that they have often thought that residents do not get enough enjoyment from the front lawn, but now they will.

Phoenix palms — part of our story by Brian Eastwood

Our recent mention of the five phoenix palms that stand on the foreshore in Victoria Street has brought back memories for some people A former Dargaville woman, Pat Malloy (nee Gould), married the son of Charlie Malloy, the man who grew and planted the now giant trees. Pat, who now lives with her husband, Mike Malloy in Auckland wrote and told us, ‘Charlie was always very proud of the Band Rotunda area and the trees he planted there’. And Mike recalled that his father was an excellent athlete, good rugby player and runner. Born in Reefton in 1884, Charlie came to Dargaville in 1917 after returning from the First World War. But his sporting days had ended when he suffered a serious stomach wound, serving as a runner for General Temperley on Gallipoli, as a member of the Canterbury Regiment.

behind the Band Rotunda, but disappeared. He always maintained that hooligans pushed it into the river and that it is still there. Other people remember the rose arbour on the Dargaville Club end of the lawn. It was also the place where Pop Randall’s river ferry Victoria Street’s phoenix palms rekindle memories picked up passengers to take them to and from Turiwiri, before the Northern Wairoa River bridge was built. The waterfront and the palm trees have turned out to be another PLANT WAREHOUSE small piece in the story of the people who have lived and worked in our town.

He became merchandise manager for the North Auckland Farmers, the building that was burned down in 2008. It stood where the new Foster’s Arcade has opened. In 1920 Charlie married Kathleen Hosking, the daughter of Frank Hosking, the surveyor who mapped out much of Dargaville borough. She was the granddaughter of Joseph Dargaville, the town founder. In 1926 Charlie was transferred to North Auckland Farmers Whangarei branch and died in 1969, aged 85 years.

Gaining inspiration in difficult times is the key to regeneration, success and fulfilment. ‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill was written at the time of the great depression in 1937 when business confidence was at an all time low. The book was an instant success selling 20 million copies and spawning a whole new category of ‘self help’ books. Most importantly, ‘Think and Grow Rich’ helped inspire great numbers of people achieve great success despite the dire state of the economy at the time. Winter Warm Up

DON’T DRINK AND

Preparation beats the big chill The winter may have been a little late in coming but last weekend’s icy storms hit most of the country, with the Kaipara getting a glancing blow — mainly rain and strong chilly winds But fortunately, there are many ways to keep warm this winter, not least being good clothing choices when you are out and about. On the home front though, the current energy catchcry is insulation. Without it your home quickly loses heat through the ceiling, walls, windows and the floor. Together, these losses can account for up to 70% of the heating bill for an uninsulated home. Since hot air rises, the greatest loss of heat is through the ceiling. Ceiling insulation is remarkably effective and can reduce your bill by up to 30%. A window can lose heat five to 10 times faster than an equivalent area of a wall. Keeping curtains and blinds on north-facing windows open during the day takes advantage of the free heating energy provided by the sun. This can let

in up to 3kWh of heat per day, per square metre of window — which is equivalent to a single bar radiator running for three hours. At night the curtains should be kept closed to keep the heat in.

Winter Warm Up So here’s a quick heat loss checklist: • Install ceiling insulation • Run a ceiling fan on low speed to help circulate warm air • Fit curtains or blinds and open curtains on north-facing windows to let the sun in • Fit draught excluders to external and internal doors to stop draughts When using heat sources, a log burner, a radiator or storage heater, closing off areas of your home enables you to heat only those areas you are using. Two rooms cost twice as much to heat as one. But there really is nothing to beat the good old kiwi standby of a fire — these days we mean enclosed log-burners with the environment in mind. And that means a wood supply. The Home Heating Association says wood has about the same heating potential on a weight for weight basis, so one kg of pine is capable of releasing as much heat as the same weight of manuka. However, hardwood, being denser, will put out more heat from a given volume, and will burn more slowly. It’s for this reason that manuka has been such a prized and sought after firewood. So, in our largely rural environment in the Kaipara, a chainsaw can be a good investment — but it

pays to have the hard work done and the wood stacked before the chill begins. It is hard to over-emphasise the importance of using seasoned and dry firewood. If you want to know more about designing an energy efficient home, installing insulation, choosing energy efficient appliances, or any other matters relating to home energy use, there’s plenty of advice in the marketplace.

Are you one of those home owners who have tried many forms of home appliances to reduce the problems of a cold, mouldy and condensation filled home without success and ended up with high power bills? Latest studies show that many homes do not hold their heat through the night and temperatures drop too low for the health of young and old. If your home was built before 1991 it probably doesn’t have wall insulation. Research has found that insulating the roof and under-floor space is not enough to retain the heat inside the living space. It’s a bit like having a chilly bin without insulated sides. We spend at least 10 hours each day in our homes, and it is usually the coldest part of the day/night. To effectively maintain constant warmth, the walls must be insulated as well. Insulation can be installed into existing homes with the Airfoam Insulation System which is a quick, easy and cost effective installation of existing wall insulation. There is no need to remove claddings or linings, only one to two days for installation with minimum disturbance to the home owner, you will have a warmer drier healthier home that is easier to heat and retains the heat longer. Airfoam can assist you with the very low interest easy payments. Energy Saver Fund tailored to your needs.

Awards nominations sought

Northern Wairoa continue good form

Two categories are now open for nomination in the Westpac 2011 Northland Business Excellence Awards.

Saturday 9th July was another good day of football for Northern Wairoa Delta Kumara Senior men

Nominations for the Northern Advocate Northland Business Hall of Fame and More FM Customer Choice Awards close on September 30. “The Northern Advocate Northland Business Hall of Fame award is to celebrate the achievement of those people within the Northland business community who have made significant contribution to the region and recognise those who have demonstrated service to their industry and the greater Northland community, said Northland Chamber of Commerce spokesman, Tony Collins. “It is not necessary that they still live or operate in Northland, but they need to have a strong connection to Northland and that this is widely known. The More FM Customer Choice Award is presented to businesses and their staff whose contributions and achievements have made them stand out from the crowd. Previous winners were selected by local consumers for outstanding achievements and excellence. Vote for your favourite business who has given you excellence in customer service by entering their details at www.northlandbusinessawards. co.nz. Nominations should be forwarded to the chamber, along with a short paragraph as to why they should be inducted, and close on September 30. The awards will be announced on October 28. Details are at: awards@northchamber.co.nz

The day started with a presentation of team jackets kindly sponsored by Donna and Nigel Randell of Randell’s Suzuki. These jackets were accepted on behalf of the team by Dhamendra Kumar (team manager) and Reuben Rhodes (captain). Many thanks Donna and Nigel, the team really appreciates your generosity. Northern Wairoa played into the wind in the first half and fought a hard battle trying to keep the ball down as much as possible due to the wind being so strong and gusty. Possession seemed to be evenly matched between Northern Wairoa and Whangarei Pacifica; it was starting to look as if it would be a nil-all score as the first half drew to an end, then in the final minute, Greer Mackay scored after some precision passing of the ball. In the second half with Northern Wairoa having the wind at their backs, play stepped up a notch and spectators were treated to some good ball skills which culminated in a further five

goals, one of which was a penalty goal shot by Cam McCullough, leaving the score at 6–0 to Northern Wairoa. Goal scorers: Greer Mackay 1, Mohammed Khan 2, Regan Randell 1, Cherise Wilson 1 and Cam McCullough 1. Player of the Day was Cherise Wilson. Next week the team is playing away at Kawakawa against Bay Cosmos.

Japan quake affects Kiwi car market

by Our Motoring Correspondent

The devastation caused by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami disaster has had aftershocks in the local car market, with supplies here limited as Japan picks up most of the national production. However, Toyota has maintained its dominance in the sales of light commercial vehicles, with the ever-popular Hilux recording sales of 500 units in the latest Motor Trade Association survey for the month of June, making it New Zealand’s top selling model overall. Nissan’s Navara sold 319 units for second place and Ford Ranger completed the top three in the light commercial sector, with sales of 217 units. “Despite the shortage of some key models, the market seems to have adjusted quickly with buyers substituting for those models on limited availability (because of the quake),” said MTA marketing manager, Ian Stronach. “This was another positive month for the industry, with signs of strength across all sectors. Buyers have obviously not held off purchasing, despite their preferred choice not always being available and the ongoing incentive of Fieldays Specials has also helped drive sales. “With production for several leading Japanese manufacturers set to return to pre-tsunami levels quicker than originally thought, the market is likely to retain its somewhat dynamic edge for the coming months.”

ahead of 2010 by 2,554 units, or 6 per cent. New commercial vehicles maintained the strength they have been showing all year at 2,287 units — 259 units ahead compared to May. There was a new leader in the new car market, with Hyundai making the most of a combination of good product availability and a relatively fresh model line-up to take the top spot. Sales of 609 units provided them with an 11 per cent share of the market. Toyota bounced back finishing in second spot with sales of 574 units with Holden followed by Ford. Suzuki completed the top five sales marques.

Silver heart for Ruawai Kindergarten Ruawai Kindergarten has received the New Zealand Heart Foundation’s Silver Award, becoming one of Northland’s healthiest kindergartens. There are three levels of the award, with the kindergarten gaining its bronze award last year. “To achieve the award the kindergarten had to meet the seven requirements, the provision of food; lunchbox guidelines, a food and nutrition policy, an active movement policy, parent/ whanau education, professional development, curriculum linked physical activity, and food and nutrition activities, said teacher, Alishya Chircop.

Details finalised for Kaipara Art Awards The date, theme and location for the second annual Kaipara Art Awards has been announced. The awards are held to recognise the achievements of individual artists within the our community. The Kaipara Art Awards will be on display at Matakohe’s Kauri Museum, from October 17 to November 17, displaying works that pertain to this year’s theme: From the Pacific to the Tasman. Kaipara District Council’s Community Development Facilitator, Heidi Dreyer, hopes that an exhibition at the Kauri Museum will mean that Kaipara art is exposed to a wider section of community. She adds that all artwork should be submitted to the KDC office before 4pm October 13, unless alternative arrangements have been made. Art will be displayed from October 19. “The awards ceremony will take place at the Kauri Museum on November 17 at 5pm, says Heidi. “There will be five categories — sculpture, painting or drawing, photography, jewellery and ceramics — and also a People’s Choice Award. “The winner of the People’s Choice Award will receive two hundred and fifty dollars and the winners of each category will receive four hundred dollars. There is an entry fee per artwork of ten dollars and each artist can submit a total of three pieces. Entry forms will be available at the KDC office or contact Heidi on 09 439 7059.

“We are continually encouraging our parents and whanau to join in the activities at the kindergarten, with the donation of fruit for our children to eat, helping out in our garden and encouraging our whanaus to take home the produce we grow. “The Healthy Heart Award helps in creating an environment that promotes and supports healthy eating choices and physical activity to under fives and their families, making children heart healthy for life. “Our aim here at Ruawai Kindergarten is to work towards our gold award and continue to offer healthy choices for our children, said Alishya. Ruawai Kindergarten also participates in the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Life programme.

What a legend! For the staff and volunteers at Circus Kumarani, The Legend of Haki Jack is the culmination of three months’ hard work, dedication, skill, progression and, most of all, passion. Nearly 100 performers and crew lit up Dargaville Town Hall on Saturday, July 2, with their moving, educational and unique performance. “I am so proud of the team we have here at circus, says Jenny Huriwai from Kumarani Productions. “It is a pleasure to work with such passionate and emotional people! The Legend of Haki Jack was a collaborative effort from start to finish, which included script-writing, directing, costume and prop making, and back-stage crew and performers. Haki Jack is a personal interpretation that explores Matariki and also the importance of nature, during the United Nations International Year of the Forest.

“It’s a miniature Cirque du Soleil, smiles Kumarani teacher, Johan (Jo) De Carvalho proudly, and it certainly is international. “We meet people — travellers — out in the car park and tell them to come and see what we do. Some have stayed in Dargaville longer — just to help out with the show. Fellow teacher, Mathieu Merle, adds, “The show was about so many things. It’s about morals and dreams, it is strong and powerful, you can see the sparkle in people’s eyes. Circus Kumarani’s performance was well attended and received considerable praise — some audience members also attended the Kamo show on Saturday, July 9. Circus Kumarani would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored and supported the show.

JULY 14 - 2011

Men who made Northern Wairoa by Brian Eastwood Many will know the story of Sir Thomas Clifton Webb, Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister, diplomat, United Nations delegate, noted rugby player and Te Kopuru’s most accomplished son. Fewer will recognise the name of his grandfather, Thomas Stirrup Webb, who was one of the very earliest settlers to arrive in Northern Wairoa. Like many others from the United Kingdom, he decided to stay and make his life here. He contributed much to his new home. Born in Leicestershire in 1817, Thomas Stirrup practised as a chemist in Staffordshire before sailing for New Zealand on the immigrant ship Gertrude in 1863. For a middle-aged man, it was a brave decision to bring his wife and seven children to begin a new life in a still barely settled district. A daughter died at sea on the way to New Zealand. An early historian, John Stallworthy, wrote that Webb selected his block with great care. ‘He settled on the Kopuru block and was the first settler there. He bought horses, cows and farm implements and at once started to carve out his home’. Within just six years, he had been appointed a JP and coroner for the district, at first without any police to back him up. In a typical accident of the time, Thomas

Stirrup Webb sat as coroner at Tokatoka to hear the circumstances of a boating accident on the Northern Wairoa River. Two men were drowned when their boat, overloaded with almost three tons of kauri gum on their second trip for the day, met a heavy wind and capsized. Coroner Webb was told that overloading was a common practice. In 1874, Webb became Licensing Commissioner for Port Albert, Kaipara and Tokatoka. When the original Hobson County Council sat in 1877, he was one of the seven who became the first councillors. That same year he took on the responsibility of registrar of births, deaths and marriages. He was also the electoral returning officer. Stallworthy noted that when Webb came to Northern Wairoa there were no roads, very few settlers, mail once a month by open boat, with only one little cutter trading to Kaipara. ‘He lived to see roads, bridges, steamers, great sawmills, public halls, a hospital, libraries and a dairy company’. As settler numbers increased, the need for the administration of justice in the Northern Wairoa grew. Thomas Stirrup Webb was a man that took up that challenge. He died aged 86 years and is buried at Mt. Wesley.
