A concert and fundraising event last Saturday saw crowds gather at Paparoa War Memorial Hall to enjoy supper and live entertainment from various local entertainers. There were also numerous raffles with prizes donated by local businesses, an art competition and a quickfire auction. Citizens from across the district danced, dined, mingled and enjoyed the atmosphere, pitching in to ease the financial burden for those hit hardest by the ‘weather bomb’ events of February. Two plans to quash water restrictions
u by Andy Bryenton
April’s Kaipara District Council briefing session included an analysis of plans to end Dargaville and Baylys Beach water restrictions with a dam and pipeline project worth $10 million.
Ending summer water restrictions plaguing the west Kaipara is a project spanning two council administrations.
“These water restrictions inconvenience residents and compromise backyard permaculture endeavours, however, this is only the surface of the issue. The lack
of water makes the council cautious of allowing additional connections to, or extensions of the municipal supply network,” said KDC infrastructure manager Mark Schreurs.
With growth predicted, housing in desperately short supply, and new
subdivisions currently at the hearings stage, councillors were eager to move proactively on a solution. In the 2021 Long Term Plan, then-incumbent councillors chose to opt out of the Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust (TTTWT) dam at Redhill continued on page 6 …

Tech advice from citizens bureau Funding offered for river clean-up
u by Andy Bryenton
Dargaville Citizens Advice Bureau has taken up the task of assisting locals with their digital and technological problems, hosting monthly clinics to help fix computer and phone issues.
The move comes in response to the closure of SeniorNet Dargaville after a long and respected tenure assisting older folk with their tech questions. Several former SeniorNet volunteers have stepped up to be part of the new drop-in clinics where people can ask about specific digital problems and get downto-earth answers.
“Twenty-two years of commitment has come to an end for the team at SeniorNet Dargaville,” said Heather Cashin. “We felt unable to commit to the work involved in keeping up to date with technology so that we could help others, and also the administration involved with running the help centre.”
With the insight of the CAB behind it, the first of these clinics went recently, with another scheduled for May 12. People can call the CAB on 09 439 6100 to book an appointment at this drop-in, and may even give some idea of what’s wrong so they can be provided with a more
complete answer on the day. It could be a fault, a bug, a desire to learn more about a particular program or app, or a query for advice on what to look for when shopping for new technology for a specific purpose.
At the same time, the CAB is aware that the building it currently occupies may soon be under the wrecking ball. As it is in part of the Dargaville Town Hall annexe, its premises are indicated to be part of a forthcoming demolition and rebuild scheme. ¢

The Northland Regional Council has stepped in with $500,000 to assist landowners in coping with post-Cyclone Gabrielle trees in rivers, with the Paparoa River targeted in Kaipara, as the government is to be asked for additional funding.
NRC chair Tui Shortland says a variety of measures had been agreed upon by councillors and included a visit to Paparoa and Kaihū and Awakino catchments.
“The scale of the issue in some of these areas is considered to be beyond the ability of landowners to complete the clean-up works through their own resources,” she said. “The council has allocated $500,000 to help remove these trees and will prioritise areas where there is highest risk of river blockage and subsequent impacts.
“We aim to commence these works as soon as possible to enable as much clearing of trees as possible before the winter wet weather hits us.”
Big forestry gear and experienced crews would be required to do the heavy lifting involved with trees removed and stacked out of flood reach.
Chair Shortland says the council is in discussions with central government agencies to discuss the possibility of additional central government funding,
as the funding will not be sufficient to remove all trees from all rivers. Also on the funding front, the council was looking to make up to $300,000 of land management funding available to rebuild riparian fencing damaged by Cyclone Gabrielle.
Councillors had backed a ‘pragmatic’ approach by staff to any non-compliance caused or contributed to by the cyclone. ¢

Getting your business ready for sale
u by Keegan Jones and Lina Khan
Whether you’re stepping back, moving on to the next opportunity or freeing up capital for other priorities, selling your business can be stressful or rewarding, depending on how your sale proceeds.
Also known as ‘vendor due diligence’, getting your business ready for sale before going on the market will help attract more buyers. Your accountant and your lawyer can provide crucial support to do this. You will need to:
1. Make sure your financial accounts are all up to date and in a state that can be provided to a purchaser (your accountant can help with this).
2. Get an idea of how much your business is worth (an accountant or independent valuer can help with this).
3. Make sure your legal documentation is current (your lawyer can help with this).
That includes reviewing: Your lease(s) — Ensure that the lease allows for a sufficient further term (including renewals) for the purchaser to feel confident that the business premises will be available for an adequate period going forward.
Consider what will happen to the lease once you exit the business. You may wish to assign (transfer) the lease to the purchaser, which requires landlord approval. Generally, a landlord cannot unreasonably withhold that consent. It can be useful to discuss the proposed sale with your landlord and see what
information they will require about any potential purchaser for your landlord to consider the assignment. Note that a standard assignment of a lease does not mean you are ‘free and clear. You, as the tenant (and any guarantor), are still liable if the assignee (the purchaser of your business) does not comply with the terms of the lease. You can ask the landlord to waive your obligations, but they do not have to agree to that.
Employment agreements — Make sure all employment contracts and employment records are up to date. That includes ensuring that all employment agreements are in writing and signed by both parties.
Supplier and customer contracts — Like your lease, check that any relevant supplier or customer contracts are upto-date and have a satisfactory term remaining. You will need to check that they are capable of being transferred to a purchaser and what steps (if any) need to be followed to do so, such as getting the supplier’s/customer’s consent.
Intellectual property — Ensure that any applicable intellectual property is appropriately protected. This may
mean having any business trademarks registered or renewed.
4. Resolve any and all disputes with third parties which could be seen as negative to a prospective purchaser (eg employees, suppliers, customers).
5. Make sure any website and social media campaigns/pages are up to date and represent the business in a favourable light.
Once you’ve completed the preparation phase, you’ll need to decide how you want to market your business for sale. You can ask different business brokers to present proposals to you about how they would look to market your business and attract the best buyers, which should help you
make sure you choose the right person to get the best value for you.
Depending on the business and your personal situation there may be other options.
Consider whether any of your children or employees would want to take over the business. These kinds of sales can be staged if the buyer does not have immediate access to funding to buy your business in one go. Your accountant and lawyer can assist you in making this kind of arrangement.
If you’re thinking about selling your business, WRMK’s experienced lawyers would be happy to have a confidential chat to help you set off on the right path.

Kellys Bay no longer has a campground, ending many years of summer holidays by the beach for families visiting Kaipara.
The Kaipara District Council had tried to formulate a plan to continue offering camping services to the area after the decision in late 2022 by the Kellys Bay Improvement Society to cease the management of the popular camping area.
However, with no plan finalised as of April 1 this year, the Kellys Bay Camping Reserve has reverted to council management. It will now be administered simply as a recreational park, with no amenities for accommodation.
“Kaipara District Council would like to thank the past and current committee of Kellys Bay Improvement Society for their contribution to their community,” says KDC communication adviser Tash Jennings.
“Improvements, including road sealing and the seawall, were funded through campground earnings and their hard work as volunteers. Special acknowledgement to Jenny and Terry Mager for their dedication and care in managing the campground and reserve — thank you.”
The change in status for the camping reserve was rumoured during the summer of 2022. Discussions to formulate a plan which could see the campground remain were ongoing until options had been considered and appraised. Staff at the KDC hold out the possibility summer camping may return to the bay in the future if a suitable management plan can be put in place.
“Our parks team will maintain the reserve while we determine whether it will reopen as a campground in future,” says Ms Jennings. ¢

A Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust decision to support a huge landfill for Auckland’s rubbish in the Dome Valley has been attacked as unconstitutional by the overall iwi in the Environment Court.
The court is hearing final submissions in an appeal against a decision to allow Waste Management Ltd to develop a massive Dome Valley landfill, with a perceived pollution threat to the Kaipara Harbour.
Iwi, Forest and Bird, the Department of Conservation and the Fight the Tip movement are among many appellants. All were shocked when the settlement trust reversed opposition to the tip, claiming a deal with Waste Management involving a $10 million bond and jobs assurance. However, the Ngāti Manuhiri Te Kiri Marae at Leigh has slammed the trust claim.
“It is not valid and signed without iwi engagement,” said marae chair Annie Baines. “Such a decision requires 75 per cent of trust beneficiaries for approval. It only has one signature, that of the trust chair (based in Rotorua) Mook Hohneck.”
The wider iwi presented this opposing view in submissions last week. It follows criticism from anti-tip campaigner and kaumātua, Waiaotea Marae, Mikaera Miru, who said the matter raises serious questions around the legitimacy of
people who have control of Maori statutory entities and mana whenua.
Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua co-chair Dame Naida Glavish appeared last week and told the court the mauri, or life force, of the Hōteo River and the Kaipara had already been depleted in her lifetime, with many fish and shellfish species that were once common now rare or extinct.
“The mauri is degraded now. Not only will that continue with Waste Management; it will also degrade the whenua (land).” ¢

Council building strategy examined
u by Andy Bryenton
News of the imminent demolition of Dargaville’s town hall annexe has spurred interest in the Kaipara District Council’s strategy for its Hokianga Road properties, including its prior offices.
With news that the leaky and unfixable annexe must come down came rumours that the similarly constructed addition to the council chambers at 42 Hokianga Road would share an identical fate. That has been confirmed, with council sources noting that demolishing the entire complex across the road from Dargaville’s courthouse was mandated in the Smith administration’s last Long Term Plan.
While Te Roroa is temporarily leasing the upper part of the building, eventually, the whole thing must go. Remediation costs to make it fit for purpose as a civic hub have been estimated at $11 million (adjusted for inflation since 2021).
“Council has worked hard to ensure best value for money for our ratepayers given the deteriorating state of the buildings and estimated costs to remediate them,” says KDC chief executive Jason Marris.
“We are also using the Three Waters ‘better off’ funding provided by the government to design and plan for a community hub in Dargaville at that location, as well as one in Mangawhai. These will comprise a library and community centre.”
To avoid passing on any of that speculative $11 million as rates rises, the KDC instead opted to lease part of the new Northland Regional Council-built office complex lower down Hokianga
Road. This costs approximately $6,000 a week, a favourable rate for modern office space, and represents a much lower cost than spreading a rebuild over several years of rates.
This strategy will place the KDC offices, civic art gallery, courts, cinema, town hall, library and meeting spaces within a tight circle in Hokianga Road when work is completed. ¢
Work Starts on Mangawhai Substation
Late last month Northpower, along with local hapu, blessed the site where a brand-new substation will be constructed in the heart of Mangawhai Central.
Steady population growth in Mangawhai means an increased need for more infrastructure including electricity, so Northpower is building a substation to increase supply capacity and reliability in the area.
Northpower CEO Andrew McLeod says, “the new substation is a material investment for Northpower, and one of a number of staged investments being made to support ongoing growth and development in the area. We see development in the area as positive for the North, and we are keen to do our bit to make that future possible.”
“In completing projects of this type, it is important to Northpower that we work closely with local hapu to appropriately acknowledge the history of the site, and the changing nature of its use.
Te Uri O Hau have been guiding us through this process at Mangawhai and have been extremely generous with their time, advice and support.,” McLeod says.

Two plans to quash water restrictions
and instead chose to expand the KDC reservoir at Opanake Road, Waiatua.
Consultant engineers have returned a plan to build a higher dam wall, increasing the reservoir’s capacity to more than 330,000 cubic metres. It would be plumbed into the existing water system through a fourkilometre pipe.
The total cost has been estimated at $7–$10 million, with design and resource consents complete by July 1 2024. That is when a speculative Three Waters entity would take over all water infrastructure in Kaipara, including the responsibility, and the bill, for these upgrades.
Mr Schreurs indicated that new information from the TTTWT meant that it was prudent to keep options open for investing in the Redhill dam. A revised proposal from the trust may make this option more viable than the Waiatua expansion. ¢
It has been designed to fit in with the surroundings, consisting of a modern tilt slab building to house all the electrical equipment. From the outside, the substation will look modern and fresh with landscaping designed to blend into the surrounding development. The substation will be completed early next year.
“The substation will be built with room to grow and includes space to house an additional transformer of 15 megawatts, which means as Mangawhai grows, we can expand our capacity” McLeod says.
Local contractors will work alongside Northpower on the construction of the new Mangawhai substation.
TIPS :
• Choose the type of heater that best suits your room and your needs. Portable electric heaters are 100% efficient; heat pumps can be more than 300% efficient.
• Only use your heaters when you need them and heat you or the room you are in rather than trying to heat the whole house. Close windows and drapes early to keep the warmth in.
• Timers on heaters can be useful for controlling when you want the heat, e.g. when you get up in the morning or for when you get home at night.

Mates out to help each other New minister fields firearms questions

The Northland Ostomy Society is reaching out to patients who wish to share their experiences and give each other a helping hand.
An ostomy society is a nonprofit organisation aiming to assist in rehabilitating people who have undergone bowel or bladder surgery resulting in a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy. Celebrating the mateship and good humour of their groups, they’ve adopted the name Ostomates.
“For many, it is also the first link with a group of people who have banded together to help one another and not to be alone, that their experiences are not unique and there are answers to their questions and problems,” says Northland Ostomy Society committee member Peter Matheson.
Peter and his fellow Ostomates aim to establish a group locally, helping support fellow ostomy patients in the Kaipara area.
“Ostomy group members are not medical people, although we each know a fair bit about this type of surgery after a while,” says Peter.
The Northland Ostomy Society is seeking people who may wish to join
just such a group in the Kaipara area. There’s no set form or schedule for this gathering of like-minded mates.
Peter says that he and the committee will let it take a form which suits those involved.
“You will meet other people who have lived with similar problems. At the meetings, we may be able to help solve problems you may have,” Peter said. In the first instance, potential members should email info@northlandostomy. co.nz. ¢

A contentious proposal to raise firearms fees for farmers and hunters has become the focus of questioning in parliament.
Newly appointed police minister Ginny Andersen was upstanding to defend the proposals floated by police last year, which would see the cost of a 10-year firearms licence increase from $126 to $625. Furthermore, the cost to responsibly deal in firearms and ammunition would rise from $204 annually to more than $2,700 annually, impacting small-town sporting goods and hunting businesses.
Members of the National and ACT parties have been vocal in their opposition to the proposed changes, while Labour MPs, including former police minister Stuart Nash, opined that fees need to rise to cover the cost of gun registration and licensing. Fees have stood at the same level since 1999.
“It is not our intention to encourage licensed firearms holders to disengage from the firearms regulatory system,” said Ms Andersen in a parliamentary debate.
ACT MP Nicole McKee asked the police minister several questions, broaching the issue of extra fees closing down rural businesses and hindering pest control. Also on Ms McKee’s mind was the visibility and voice of the 6,000 licensed
gun owners who had submitted on the proposed fee changes.
“I have been advised that police have received over 6,000 submissions on the consultation document, and I look forward to reviewing these before making any further decision,” said Ms Andersen on the subject.
That review may be complete and fees firmed up in time for the opening of duck season in May. ¢

Prune, chop, mulch — There’s a lot of tidying up to do around many gardens thanks to the effects of February’s wild weather. Still, all that foliage does not necessarily have to go to the tip. Hire a wood chipper, or borrow one from an accommodating friend, and you can turn a lot of those lopped-off branches into useful mulch. A layer of this green waste byproduct acts like a comforting blanket for the root systems of trees and shrubs, ironing out temperature fluctuations and preserving moisture. It can also feed beneficial fungi beneath the soil.
Firewood from dicey trees — Leaning, cracked, overhanging power lines, or too close for comfort to garages and eaves; some trees have to go before the storms of winter. Give them the chop while the weather is still settled, ensuring you have all the right chainsaw safety gear in place. The resulting firewood will be a welcome reserve as we near the end of winter, a few months down the track. If you can’t chop your own, now is the time to buy a good supply.
Planting bulbs — As the old saying goes, bulbs go down in autumn to come up in spring. A riot of colourful flowers will herald warmer weather in August and November if you take a little time to dig in those daffodils, hyacinths and tulips soon. Take care to accompany them with some of the right nutrients to ensure they come up strong.
Compost season — Wood ash from your fireplace, the straggly last remains
of summer’s veggie crops, fallen deciduous leaves, food scraps and all manner of organic goodies should go into your compost heaps this time of year. You’ll notice them steaming in the cold mornings as busy bacteria begin to work their magic. It’s a good time to build or buy a new compost bin or worm farm.
The home orchard — It’s time to prune back and care for summer fruit trees, even as some varieties of apples and pears are now at their most succulent. As the weather turns cold these, along with other fruits like grapes, may become the target for birds seeking easy pickings in the shorter hours of daylight. Get some scrim or netting out to deter the flying orchard robbers, and plan to preserve some of your bounty with old-fashioned mason jars, and recipes for jams and sauces. Home-made apple sauce with a pork roast is simply unbeatable winter fare.
Lawn reform — The slow months of winter growth are a perfect time to regrow patchy or uneven lawns back to a full viridian carpet. Spray with a ‘weed and seed’ fertiliser and sow in autumn
to make the best use of seasonal rain; when springtime rolls around, you’ll want to have your mower ready, as those newly planted areas are sure to take off. ¢

Autumn nights are for entertaining
u by Andy Bryenton
A cool, crisp autumn night may not be as balmy as summer, but there’s still plenty of opportunity to entertain guests outdoors and make the most of the chance to barbecue.
So long as the rain stays away, a brazier, contained fire or patio heater can provide the warmth you need to enjoy the conveniently timed sunsets of April and May, which coincide nicely with
dinnertime. Rather than packing up the barbecue as a summer indulgence, many see this time of year as a perfect excuse to delve into some of the more hearty, warming options that can be concocted using charcoal and fire.
The trend for charcoal has swept the world in recent years, and competitive barbecue masters outdo each other with their elaborate trailer-mounted grills. If you’re new to the scene, however, there’s no reason why you can’t create mouthwatering slow-cooked brisket, spicy ribs, or smoky-flavoured burgers on a simple kettle grill. There are many brands of good repute out there, but solid, strong metal construction is the thing to look for, and a barbecue with its own suite of tools.
These include a ‘chimney’ charcoal starter to get your charcoal up to the right temperature, a good set of barbecue cook’s tools with solid-built tongs and a multi-purpose spatula, a charcoal rake, cleaning kit and a basting brush. Unlike with a gas grill, these tools will have to withstand the heat of live charcoal.
There’s some debate as to which is best regarding the charcoal itself. Lumps
burn hotter, which is great for those wanting to cook fast using direct heat. They also retain the irregular shape of wood, meaning it’s harder to pack them in tightly when you’re firing up your ‘chimney’ to get your charcoal going. On the plus side, lumps produce a smoky flavour as they retain the character of the trees they came from. Briquettes are popular with those who want low and slow heat, as they last the distance, but they require the addition of specialised wood chips to create a smoky flavour while cooking.
Starting out with a kettle grill, you’ll be able to create both a direct heat zone and an indirect heat zone easily. Once your charcoal is up to temperature, using the ‘chimney’ starter, pour the glowinghot coals into half of the grill’s lower tray. Food cooked right above them will sizzle quickly, while food placed off to one side will gently cook through, perfect for tender meats that fall apart under the knife and fork. Most barbecue enthusiasts suggest starting with gas grill staples like burgers
p Don’t give up on outdoor entertaining just because the season has turned; with a brazier and a charcoal barbecue, you can enjoy a whole different culinary experience for autumn and sausages on direct heat before exploring all the recipes online for slow cooks. There’s also a whole world of marinades and rubs to experiment with.
Autumn nights may be a little chillier, but mulled wine, a dram of whisky, a brazier and good company will keep you warm as you enjoy those hearty, smoky-flavoured meals which seem a bit too ‘heavy’ for the heat of summer. The milder temperatures in Northland lend themselves perfectly to the rustic, old-fashioned pleasures of food cooked with fire.

From the roof down
u by Amy Fifita
Once again, it is time to get out our before-winter chores list and ensure we make the best of the weather while it is opportune.
We’ve had various weather events that would have tested the durability of our homes. Although the main clean-ups are likely completed, there may still be more checks to do. We are still in autumn and have at least a month to sort through some tasks to make sure winter is comfortable and effortless.
Check your roofs for loose nails and tiles and see what needs replacing. While up there, assess how much moss, algae and leaf piles are there. Depending on what needs to be done, you could do it yourself or call an expert to water blast and treat it.
p You can use a water blaster to clean your roof, house and driveway as part of your before-winter tasks
Have a look at spouting for damages, leaks and blockages. Clear out what you can and consider installing one of the many leaf deterrents, such as leaf guards or gutter screens. Gutter spikes may be an option, too, if you want to deter critters from nesting in what is meant to be a useful building accessory.
Now it’s time to check the body of your home. Are there cracks or movement in
your window or door frames? Best to sort that out before the winter weather rushes through next season. Door sweeps are an inexpensive and fast way to seal your home so the inside is nice and snug in the colder months.
Sort out your garage by replacing worn weather strips. These could be handy on doors and windows to weatherproof your home. One of the positives of doing
these tasks now is that it could increase your energy efficiency with heating costs.
With the housework done, look at the rest of your property. Assess your septic tank. Does it need to be emptied or serviced? Take a stroll around the area to assess for leaks. Bring in someone who knows what they are doing.
While you are outside doing maintenance, have a look at your shed. Check the door hinges and clear and organise clutter. You’ll have a fair idea of what you’ll use more during the winter, so bring those items or tools forward to avoid digging through them later.
Your driveway may need some work done too. It might do well with a water blast after your roof is done. If you have a gravel driveway, see if it needs redoing. It improves how your property looks and is safer to walk and drive on. Keep a record of what work is done so it doesn’t slip
your mind, and you can keep up to date with what needs to be done later. It is also useful for future owners of the property and insurers.

Ten-year milestone for farming in schools
u by Andy Bryenton
The Agribusiness in Schools programme, teaching future farmers about the most up-to-the-minute skills and technology in the rural sector, has marked a decade of success this month.
The scheme was piloted at Hamilton’s St Paul’s College in 2013 and has since grown to encompass 120 schools nationwide, with 4,000 students participating in the course last year alone. Educators have teamed up with industry leadership bodies to ensure that the programme produces graduates
with cutting-edge knowledge of agribusiness and farming science.
Beef and Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) and DairyNZ are both heavily involved in partnership, for example.
“It has been a game-changer, equipping students to be involved in the food and fibre industry and helping teachers promote our sector and its many possibilities,” says B+LNZ’s national extension programme manager Olivia Weatherburn.
“Due to its widespread success, the programme has not only shown rural students what careers they can have within the industry, but it has also helped to positively change both school and community perceptions of the primary sector.”
The Agribusiness in Schools programme was sparked by a survey of parents at St Paul’s, a Waikato school with a strong link to the farming community. The survey indicated that parents wanted stronger support for its rural students in encouraging them to consider pathways into the primary sector. Soon it became apparent that this concern was shared across rural New Zealand, and steps were
p Future farmers have been learning core skills with the Agribusiness in Schools programme for a decade
taken to formulate a course of studies to equip future farmers.
It grew into an academic agribusiness in schools course offered at NCEA levels two and three. It aims to expose students
to the wide range of skills required on the farm and the opportunities available in the primary sector beyond the farm gate.
“What is great about this initiative is that it is in partnership with the Ministry of Education, NZQA and the primary industries to ensure we equip our future sector workers with the right skills,” says Olivia Weatherburn.
The programme has also developed resources to support teachers who wish to bring agribusiness studies into their other non-dedicated classes. In addition, regional hubs for the programme have brought together educators who have come on board with agribusiness in schools, with tailored and ongoing mentoring for teachers by leaders in farming. Ten years in, the knowledge base developed by this method is extensive and continues to evolve.
“Overall, the programme is increasing trainee teacher numbers and teacher capability across agribusiness, which is a win-win for our sector and the food and fibre industry as a whole,” says Ms Weatherburn. ¢

Meet Ruawai’s new vet
u by Andy Bryenton
Kaipara Farm Vets have opened their new premises in Ruawai this week, and heading up the team there is experienced animal health professional Rory Dean.
“I’ve been a vet for eight years,” says Rory. “After training in Edinburgh, Scotland, I’ve worked in mixed, predominantly cattle practices in New Zealand and the UK.”
Rory says the past five years of his career have been the best, as they have been spent in Kaipara. That being said, his history in helping out with the herd goes back much further than his formal qualifications suggest.
“My first job was milking cows while I was still at school,” Rory says. “This ignited my desire to understand how farming methods could be improved, and this eventually took me to New Zealand.
It was a chance to get immersed in the outdoor lifestyle so many Kaipara folks enjoy.
“My partner Mel and I have two awesome little fox terriers, Scrappy and Alfie, who are a hoot,” says Rory. “I spend a lot of time enjoying the Kaipara environment. I like to run (slowly), I love to hunt (often unsuccessfully), and I enjoy reading a good book, swimming at Baylys Beach, learning languages and keeping up to date with politics.”
Additionally, Ruawai’s new vet has a passion for football and counts himself lucky to be able to captain his beloved Northern Wairoa FC with the round ball and not the oval one, of course. Rory is one of those
people for whom his job is also a passion; the theory and practice of better farming are an area of study he’s been keen to cultivate.
“I’m passionate about New Zealand farming and have a Postgraduate Diploma in Agricultural Science from Lincoln University,” he says.
“I’m currently working towards membership in the Dairy Cattle Medicine Chapter of the Australia and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. My key clinical interests are developing sustainable solutions for farmers and their cattle to optimise productivity, efficiency and welfare.”
p
Working in Ruawai means working with farmers who the town’s new vet has great respect for. It’s Rory’s belief that the heartland around the harbour supports some of the most skilful, knowledgeable farmers in New Zealand.
“Local farmers have trusted me to advise them on all animal health and productivity matters on-farm. I really appreciate this,” he
says. “I look forward to continuing my work with local farmers as part of their animal health team in the future. I’m committed to high-quality veterinary care and animal health advice for local farmers. It’s what they deserve.”

Three’s company in off-road line-up
u by Andy Bryenton
One of the biggest names in motorcycle manufacturing is proving that it has an ear to the ground with the release of some fresh new models to augment its 600cc offering.
A new expansion to CFMoto’s UForce 600 model range is an example of the big bike manufacturer listening to its public. The original UForce 600 has been a success story for CFMoto, matching a sharp price with a big 280 kg cargo capacity, room for three, full rollover protection and 680kg of towing.
Shaw Shaw
WHANGAREI KAWASAKI AGENTS
A powerful but simple single overhead cam 580cc single-cylinder engine delivers power via a CVT gearbox, allowing for a smooth ride and no need for wrestling with a gearshift. It’s watercooled, too, so that long days of hard work or long treks down muddy off-road trails won’t come close to making it overheat.
That’s a tidy package that allows the UForce 600 to play in the same league as some rather more expensive competitors.
p Three of the best — CFMoto has turned its successful UForce 600 into a family of economical, hard-working side-by-sides
Maungatūroto’s hilly terrain and large farming heartland are the right spot, for just such a machine, especially considering the many upgrades available to customise it. However, customer feedback led to CFMoto adding two more variants to its off-the-showroom offering.
The first is for those who want a workhorse that’s tough and capable, but don’t feel the need for ostentation. For these people, the Uforce 600 Base is the
answer. It’s got an even lower price point, achieved by replacing certain pieces of kit with more simple, reliable components. Consider it the ‘army spec’ side by side; for example, alloy mag wheels are switched for cross-drilled steel. LED lamps are replaced with powerful halogen. There’s a fixed rear diff, anticipating hard work rather than top speed, and it’s available in one colour; CFMoto blue.
At the other end of the scale is the UForce 600 Hunt, exactly the opposite
recipe, with all the extras for a wilderness adventure. Windscreen, side protector bars, a snorkel kit, and aggressive forest-camo styling with chunky mag wheels are the order of the day for this 600, which is aimed at those looking to explore and engage with wildlife of the edible variety.
Of course, any one of these machines could be perfect for any off-road job. However, their existence is a testament to the fact that CFMoto is acting on the feedback they get from their riders and drivers. That all flows into more innovations and models like the Base and the Hunt, which are ready-to-go, turn-the-key packages suited to very specific niches.
For your own particular off-road needs, whether they lie in the direction of adventure, hard work or something in between, CFMoto has you covered. Come and chat with your local dealership about your next machine, what it needs to do well and what could be the perfect fit for your farm or lifestyle. ¢

Boss gotta thing about ducks
Well readas, the Boss got me rilly flumixed (thas a new werd I learned) because we was checkin’ the farm water troffs, like we does every Satiday, an’ he suddenly said to me: “If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it blimmin’ might not be a duck. It’ll be the Chippy Hipkins idea of Three Water version numba 1,000.”
Well, there was no ducks ina troffs an’ I was still figgerin’ out wot he means wen we were back downa hill fer smoko. Boss an’ his gerlfrend Sharlene started talkin’ about ducks again, wile she pored cuppatees atta woolshed.
“Yes Deah, your reason seems a bit complicated, but I’ve bin lookin’ on line ona komputa an’ I know what yer means. Same old plan, different name.” Sharlene hada bit of papa that she calls her lists, and read in her skoolteacha voice.
“The Taxpayers Union says despite all those tens of millions spent on Three Waters’ branding and consultants, we are now meant refer to the changes as Affordable Water Reform. But Hipkins is misleading in its name. The Affordable Water Reform is just a more expensive version of Three Waters, but they reckin if people object they can say we are biased against affordable water. “Yep,” seda Boss. “Like I said, it might look like a duck but it’s blimmin’ not.”
“Well, anyway,” sed Sharlene, “Chippy says he’s gonna slow down, an’ wait a couple of years before it happens. And anyway — guess wot? We gotta ’lection in six months and anythin’ can happin. That Luxtin says he’ll change a lotta govermint stuff. An the two parties are pollin’ the same now.”
“Yep, an’ that Winstin and his mates startin’ ter sound like they suit me at votin’ time,” Boss sed. “See that Shane Jones gonna stick his hand up here in Northland, too. He sure did more for us locals with extra fundin’ for our community.”
“But deah,” sed Sharlene. “More ’portant stuff. King Charlie gonna be crowned on May 6, and we gonna see it ona telly.” But Boss didn’t seem very ’cited. “Yep, but those Poms gonna get another day holiday, an’ not only that, they pubs and bars gonna stay open for

Sharlene had a bit ofa chuckle, “Tell yer wot Deah. We kin have a big dinnah, and some drinks. It’s no use having longer bar time here, ’cos the blimmin’ Pap pub’s bin closed down.”

Viv Welsh is a self-taught knitter who recently opened her boutique wool pop-up station in a renovated retro caravan.
“I am and always will be a farmer, but I love to knit and sew, and my passion is to see young people in natural fibres,” Viv says.
“Although I am basically a selftaught knitter, I got a lot of my early inspiration from my grandmother.
In the same year, Benjamin became a Justice of the Peace. He then bought out Edwin Mitchelson and Brothers’ store in Dargaville, where they traded in general supply and gum in the township. He also set up meat canning works, a sawmilling plant and a large cattle and sheep operation.
Through various land transactions, Williams acquired thousands of hectares of gumland throughout the Kaihu Valley. He bought out the controlling interest held by Auckland-based gum broking business WS Whitely & Sons had with William Marriner, which had several stores along the Kaihu Valley railway line.
By 1909, Benjamin was a wealthy man also owning land in the Dargaville Borough and township, including much of the lower part of Hokianga Road. In

The house still stands today on the upper part of Hokianga Road. His good fortunes weren’t to last. By 1914, Williams was in financial trouble. Poor investments and a dropping out of the gum business forced him to assign his estate, including his many properties, to trustees. He continued with his second wife, Eliza, running the Empire and Royal Theatres showing silent films and hosting live performances.
By 1919, Benjamin’s assets were sold off to pay the many creditors. When he passed away in 1927, his obituary described him as a real ‘live wire in Dargaville.’ ¢
“I started knitting when my three children were younger, and now I knit for my grandchildren and extended family members. I enjoy the challenge of trying new styles of knitting and giving new patterns a go.”
Viv says that she missed the wool shop in Dargaville when it closed down two years ago.
“The caravan was bought as a project, and we gutted and brightened it up with new wallpaper and made displays for the wool with tubes.
“It’s something very different from farming, and I will still do my farm work. I enjoy working with my cattle, but if I can help someone out with their knitting, I am happy to help.”
Viv says that she started The Little Wool Boutique to give access to quality New Zealand and international wool — the boutique stocks mainly merino and merino-blend wools in four and eight-ply.
“There will also be a selection of handmade baby clothes made by myself and some local helpers for sale. It is a convenient little pop-up shop for the people to come down to get their knitting supplies.”
It will be in the car park between the Countdown and The Warehouse Dargaville on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10.30am–2.30pm until the end of September. ¢
