Star Link to Cancer Appeal by Paul Campbell

A former Te Kopuru resident local is doing her bit to raise awareness of breast cancer on the international stage, with the possibility of featuring on television’s Ellen de Generes Show Now based in Melbourne, Dee Koenigsmann is the eldest daughter of Barry and Robyn Searle of Dargaville, who lost another daughter, Sonya, to breast cancer three years ago. Dee is a key figure in an international approach to fund-raising for cancer, at a time when many thousands of dollars are still coming in as part of the National Bank Daffodil Day Appeal here in New Zealand. So far Dee has painted three ‘bassieres’ for ‘The Painted Bra Art Project’. The founder of the project, Anna Braden, from Huntsville, Alabama, thought painting bras was a novel way to raise awareness of breast cancer. It has caught on and been featured on United States TV stations, magazines and newspapers. The project will close on September 22 and all the artwork will be up for auction in October with all proceeds going to the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Foundation. Dee was asked by the founder, Anna, to paint the Ellen Bra, with the hope of The Painted Bra Art Project getting on the Ellen de Generes Show. So far Ellen likes Dee’s artwork and she Dee Koenigsmann with some of her work completed for ‘The Painted Bra Art Project’ is still waiting to hear back whether it will feature on the show. Ruawai Primary School room six class getting ready to garden
Students have been busy preparing and creating environmental gardens. Each class has been allocated a garden bed and can grow whatever plants they want. “We built the garden beds, filled them with sand and soil. Our garden shed was delivered by Total Span and we had to build a concrete base and now we are building our shed,” said room six students, Sophie Blundell and Zac Cooley.
Septic Tank Owners
How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and
b blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. Ron Simpson of Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™.

“Ruawai Transport delivered wood chips to go around our gardens; first we laid down newspaper then carted chips onto it. This was fun — they cover the mud and save our feet,” said Zac. “Dylan Thompson built our strawberry box with his helpers Riley Battcher, David Sanford and Zane Russell. We will be planting some strawberries in it soon. A worm farm eats our food scraps. Their castings will be added to our gardens. So will our compost. “We have put cabbages, tomatoes, lettuces and seeds in our poly house. These will be planted in our gardens when the temperature is alright for them.” said Sophie. Each class has an environmental programme researching different areas, from a butterfly garden area, library garden, planter boxes, and sensory garden to an orchard. A journey has been created through pictures and articles, looking back and seeing the changes that are continually taking place.

Minister supports education project
by Paul Campbell
The move by Dargaville High School to introduce agricultural courses for students from Russia is going ahead, with all support from the government, short of finance “The scheme is firmly in place for Dargaville, but we will have more work to do for it to roll out around the country,” said DHS community liaison officer, Robina Needham, who is also project coordinator. She and project supporters from a wide community base hope the courses, based on the school and local farms, for students from Russia, will spread across the other rural schools in the country. Central government support has come from Tertiary Education Minister, Steven Joyce, although financial support is not in his budget at present. He visited the school last week to discuss the project. “The upshot was that while we enjoy the full support of the government, we need to look National’s Northland candidate, Mike Sabin, with further at financial considerations, MP Steven Joyce and National party member, Neil Clements said Ms Needham. “This may take the form of a benevolent agricultural equipment, including a complete corporate partner, as we are not in the business herringbone cow shed. of making a profit on the project. A link with the Kaipara New infrastructure manager for the Kaipara District Council, Hugh Hulse was born at Otahuhu with a link to the district — his father hailed from Tokatoka “I was educated at Auckland Boys Grammar and I had a passion for engineering and joined Auckland City Council as a young engineer’s assistant enjoying a range of civil and drainage works,” said Hugh. “A mechanical upgrade at the local abattoir was particularly interesting and set the scene for a period of self employment within the contracting and construction industry. Twenty years on and having managed a construction gang, shop fitting and furniture factory it was time for a change. “A new challenge was running the brand new $63m courthouse and departmental building for the Justice department.” Hugh Hulse A restructure of Justice into several departments saw Hugh return to Auckland City as a water engineer managing the infrastructure around the CBD. Transferring to become a foundation member of Metrowater Ltd, Hugh has experienced many changes in local body administration and brings a wealth of experience in this field to the Kaipara. “Then a move to Taupo and two years at the forefront of improving the delivery of great customer service standards was rewarding, especially dealing with sensitive issues within a pristine environment. However the call to the winterless North has been compelling and I look forward to the challenges of settling into another unique environment.” Hugh is married and has two daughters and two grandchildren.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’. Historic Batley house, nestled on the foreshore of the Kaipara harbour
The rewards of exploration by Paul Campbell There is some big magic around the shores of the Kaipara. Hidden away at the head of tidal estuaries there are inlets and rivers which can take you on a magical mystery tour that is the privilege of a few who are able to become waterborn. On a recent weekend, with a couple of visitors from Hawke’s Bay, I joined a friend with a runabout to show them one of our coastal delights. From the get-go at Pahi wharf, the birdlife was lined up to offer a welcome. Once aboard it was down harbour towards the entrance to the Otamatea River, and in fact, a step into that magical kingdom to which I have alluded. The water was a glass mirror, with the green hills perfectly reflected, creating the impression that we were moving into a movie. The Otamatea River is a short, wide river, it flows southwest into
the harbour proper from Kaiwaka — in fact it is formed by the confluence of the Wairau and Kaiwaka rivers. It is some 300-metres wide at its origin before it spans a couple of kilometres at the entrance opposite Tinopai. Several other broad tidal creeks flow into the Otamatea, including Raepare Creek, Awaroa Creek, Takahoa Creek and the Whakaki River on the left bank and the Arapaoa River on the right. And the river’s name goes back to antiquity. An ancient Maori chieftain, Tamatea Arikinui, travelled widely throughout the North and the Kaipara region. The Otamatea River is believed to have been named after him. For our party, the enchantment starts just to port, as we nose up the river to Batley, and its graceful two-storey gabled and verandahed homestead standing proudly on the foreshore, picture perfect. Further up stream, on the starboard hand, subdivisions have made an impact, and our skipper pointed out a few modern homes of the not so rich and famous, a
couple of prominent kiwi sports persons among them. We continue on through a pristine waterway, now lined on either bank by magnificent stands of kauri. It is intriguing to see how some must be rooted in the very riverbanks, and certainly our vantage point with an unobstructed view from the water makes for some stunning pictures. In the upper reaches of the Otamatea, awaits a surprise. A rail bridge spans the headwaters — and not just one, but two. Alongside the still functioning crossing stand the scarred concrete pilings of another, its spans and rails long since missing. This prompts much speculation about great railway dramas on stormy nights. A later check on the Internet does not reveal much. We do discover that early last century, the longest bridge on the railway line that runs north was built — the Otamatea Bridge. Of the second crossing, no mention so far, but the search goes on.

Opening marks 10 years of hard work The opening of a brand new auditorium on Saturday marked ten years of hard work, passion and success for the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club. Mayor Neil Tiller unveiled two plaques and officially opened the new auditorium, commending the club for helping to preserve the Kaipara’s history. Local ministers blessed the building and this was followed by the national anthem and speeches. Former mayor, Graeme Ramsey, club president, Bruce Galloway and long-time member, Basil Cole, reminisced and shared their delight at the club’s progress with an audience of over 200. Flags, including the Union Jack, Stars and Stripes and the French Tricolour, were also proudly displayed, acknowledging the origin of early machines. “We had an excellent turnout at the open day,” says the club’s treasurer, Anne Lupton. “It was a very happy occasion for us all and everything went according to plan.” Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club approached the council ten years ago, seeking land to set up a base and house their machinery. Mayor at the time, Graeme Ramsey, said that there was never any doubt about the club’s enthusiasm and vision. “They were, and still are, full of energy. The council could see the long-term benefits for the town, so we said yes pretty much straight away.”
Anne says that it was just the start of a tenyear journey. “First we had to clear the land and then put up a workshop. This was followed by a lunch room and then two more bays were added to the workshop — and we were still short of room!” adds Anne. “That’s when we said, ‘Let’s build a big building’ and that was about two-and-a-half years ago. “A lot of volunteer time went into our buildings, as well as community support — donations big and small and a grant from the ASB Community Trust.”

Pool problems The Dargaville swimming pool has run into financial difficulty. In a report to the Kaipara District Council, the Kauri Coast Swimming Pool Trust says it is in a ‘difficult position which has come about due to the pool running at a deficit for the last season’. It says without additional support from council there may be a risk that the pool may not open this season, adding that council may need to consider a short term solution such as a loan from reserve funds. A meeting with the Trust and all concerned parties is currently being arranged to discuss various operating options for the facility. The general manager, operations, at the KDC, John Burt, says the pool’s operating problems and costs are being worked through with the Trust. “These are all imminently manageable,” he said. “We will work through the issues to ensure the pool opens on schedule — there is a lot of detail to go through.” The Trust said that if the status quo continued, it has discussed disbanding, risking the pool not opening next season. ‘The status of the pool as a regional facility is significant. The economic outcomes for local businesses with such a regional facility is valuable’. The report goes on to say that revenue streams can be gained through learn to swim classes, aqua-aerobics and promotion to the health sector of the hydrotherapy pool and retail sales. It also says the operating deficit had a lot to do with the delay in pool construction leading ‘to pressure being brought to bear’ on the Trust to open the facility when the full commissioning of the pool had yet to be undertaken.

‘Finding Mr Teddy’ After a wee hiatus, Dargaville Little Theatre is again helping school children develop confidence and theatrical skills through a new children’s show. ‘Finding Mr Teddy’ was written by local thespians and the play’s directors, Alexandra Martin and Eryn Wilson-Collins, who have been involved with the theatre for a number of years. “We decided that there had to be another kids’ show in Dargaville this year and chose to write it ourselves to keep the costs down,” says Erin. “We don’t like to charge a lot of money for the children’s shows and we’re not out to make a profit but once you pay for costumes and electricity for the lights, we can’t afford the royalties to put on a play that someone else has written.”
‘Finding Mr Teddy’ is about a little girl and her brother who end up on a big adventure after she loses her teddy bear in the park. The cast of twenty-one are aged between five and twelve years old and all cast members play two roles. The community is invited to four shows over one weekend, on October 1 and 2, and the children are currently rehearsing for one hour, twice a week in preparation. A ‘Finding Mr Teddy’ drawing and colouring competition is also being held to promote the show and entry forms are available from primary schools or Dargaville BP. The three top entries will receive free tickets to the show and their drawings will be used for publicity. The best entry will be reproduced for the show’s programme.

Theatre Highlight Over the last two terms at Dargaville High School, students from the English, Drama and Music departments have had the opportunity to travel down to Auckland and view two different theatre performances. These productions are to assist them in the completion of internal and external exams. The first performance was called ‘The Brothers Size’ by an award winning American playwright called Tarrell Alvin McCraney. It featured New Zealand actors and was shown at the Herald Theatre. The set and props were very simplistic as was the music which was African drums that played in the shadows, adding to the pace and theme of the performance. It followed the story of three brothers, two in blood and one in friendship, and was centred around the youngest brother’s decision whether to be negatively influenced by his jail-made brother or stay strong and listen to his wise older brother and get his life back on track. It was an extremely powerful performance which our students were all reeling from many hours after it had finished. For some it was their first theatre experience which they thoroughly enjoyed and the trip was made possible at a heavily subsidised rate by a generous sponsor. In contrast, the second performance was a Shakespearean drama, called ‘Othello’ adapted by the Peach Theatre Company
showcased at the Maidment Theatre. Again it had a stellar local cast, including actors from Shortland Street! It was extremely different in context to the first show seen by our students, following the love story of a David Bargh, soldier and a senator’s Principal daughter who eloped despite the disapproval of the girl’s father because of her age and his prejudice over the soldier’s race. It was a lot more challenging than The Brothers Size, but opened our minds a lot to different time periods and cultures. All in all, both shows were enhancing to our studies and personal development as viewing them enables you to understand and comprehend the studies related to them in a far more indepth way. As well as this, the junior school was fortunate to have a travelling theatre company come to our school to be entertained, exposing them to the world of theatre and Shakespeare. It was an adapted version of ‘Macbeth’ and with the inserts of humour, less intense dialogue and relevant issues it was an engaging performance.

ne of the industries followed by Maori on the West Coast of this island is searching for ambergris. After a storm they ride along the beach on horseback armed with a stick which has a nail attached to the end, by means of which they spear anything bearing a resemblance to ambergris and examine it without dismounting. It does not appear this form of beach combing returns big profit, but no doubt something of value is obtained from time to time.
This Town in 2011 A wander around Dargaville with Brian Eastwood Recent bright blue weather together with another two sunny days over last weekend will be having most people thinking about summer. Lawns are drying out and grass is growing so that professional lawn mowing firms are hurrying to catch up. Their ride on mowers and the do-it-your-self home-style mowers are buzzing all around town to get it under control before it is time for the beach. The mostly shiny Sunday no doubt cheered up rugby followers who watched our arch rivals the Oz, surprise and roll right over our slow to start, black clad forwards. Take a drive along Dargaville’s Gordon Street and you will notice something a bit strange. Starting from Hokianga Road there is kerbing and channelling and a good footpath on both sides of the street, but as you head east, it starts to get more basic with no kerbing or channelling. When you cross over Awakino Road even the footpath disappears from one side of the street. By the time you get to Grey Street and drive on towards the end of Gordon Street there is neither channelling nor kerbing, there is only one footpath and the street is lined with open drains. And this is the 21st Century. But perhaps there is a good and reasonable explanation. And while we are being a little pernickety, have you noticed the clocks on the poles near the Band Rotunda. There are two clocks, facing one each way on Victoria Street but each tells a different time and both are still on daylight saving time. Anyway, that problem will almost cure itself in a month two.

Treat your dad Father’s Day is nearly upon us and it is a wonderful time to honour our dads and the important men who make our lives so rich Some say that Father’s Day was first celebrated in Fairmont, West Virginia on 1908 and was organised by Mrs Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to acknowledge 210 fathers who lost their lives in a mining disaster several months earlier.

Another version says that the Father’s Day celebration was conceived in Spokane, Washington State in 1909, by Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. The daughter of Civil War veteran William Smart, suggested that there should be a day to honour fathers around the country. Her father raised her and her five siblings alone after the death of his wife during childbirth. Whatever the origins of Father’s Day, here in New Zealand, we celebrate the occasion in many different ways and families often have their own special approach but if you are still undecided

The Traeger wood pellet grill makes food taste sensational and the vast array of flavoured wood pellets will further enhance any dish. The Traeger is easy — turn it on, set the temperature and walk away — and clean-up is a breeze. Jean Sircombe’s Big River Art Gallery is a must-see for aesthetically pleasing gifts and commission paintings. Landscapes are a particular specialty for Jean and the rural Kaipara serves as a great inspiration but she will also paint family paintings or your favourite pet. If Dad is the arty type, ask Jean about painting tuition and help dad relax and develop his talent. Jo’s Home Cookery is perfect for a cosy meal by the fire and Jo’s menu is full of the treats that mum and grandma used to make. The home-made sweets and savouries are all always fresh from the oven, with Jo’s unique twist and the delicious, affordable meals are certain to score you some brownie points. Snazzi Gifts is Dargaville’s dedicated giftware shop and if cars are Dad’s thing, then check out the Father’s Day special on classic car models. The gift range also includes ornaments celebrating rural life, fishing and fatherhood, salt lamps to help balance Dad’s qi, gorgeous cards and so much more.
If your hard-working Dad is often out in the elements then show him you care with some protective gear from Kaipara Workwear’s great father’s day sale. Dress Dad from head to toe — because he probably won’t — and keep him warm and dry or safe from the sun. Kaipara Workwear also has a great range of smart-casual attire. Lastly, if your Dad loves his car but hates to clean it, then a super special father’s day valet is the perfect treat. Morfett Auto Services’ popular cleaning service can turn Dad’s mess into a sweet-smelling, sparkling and hygienically clean masterpiece that you and your Dad can be proud of. However you and your father celebrate this weekend, we hope it is a safe and happy time of love and laughter, sharing and memories. New Zealand joins Australia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea who all celebrate Father’s Day on September 4. Latvia and the Ukraine also celebrate Father’s Day during September but on the 11th and 18th respectively. Around the world, June and July are the most popular months for celebrating Dads. America, the United Kingdom and Canada all celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June, Spain and Belgium on March 19 and Sweden on the second Sunday of November.

What’s in the merger?
by Our Agriculture Correspondent
The MAF and Ministry of Fisheries merger which took effect this month is certainly becoming a hot topic of conversation in primary industry circles, with protagonists and proponents variously well-informed. So just what has actually happened? Well, the full impact of the merger is still under consideration by the government departments involved and it will be another couple of months before the fine details emerge. MAF and the Ministry of Fisheries merged on 1 July, and an interim structure has been in place since, led by Director General, Wayne McNee. The current consultation considers

the remaining structural changes needed to complete the merger. If implemented as proposed, the changes would realise savings of more than $18 million in the 2012/13 financial year, and Mr McNee says these savings would occur without reducing the front line services delivered by MAF. “The primary sectors are enormously important to New Zealand’s economic future and they need to be served by a ministry that is future focussed, agile and enabling,” he said. “Our ministry will partner with the primary sector to maximise export opportunities and improve sector productivity, while increasing sustainable resource use and protecting New Zealand from biological risks. We will also ensure our services provide good value to New Zealand.” The proposals include combining and streamlining functions such as financial management, policy advice, and communications. In areas where there is a strong business case, such as IT, there are proposals to out-source some functions. Other reductions in position numbers would occur through a realignment of the management
structures of the two legacy ministries. Many of the positions proposed to reduce are currently vacant. There are no proposals to reduce numbers of current staff who are, fisheries officers or animal welfare inspectors and investigators or quarantine inspectors. “We will continue to deliver the front-line services that we know are valued by New Zealanders, and ensure these are of a high standard,” he added. He says changes to staff levels have been balanced against the need to ensure front-line services will continue to be delivered and improved. Under the proposals, MAF estimates the number of positions would reduce by 241, of which 97 are currently vacant. The majority of that reduction would occur in Wellington, where MAF has its head office. Final decisions on the outcome of the consultation process will be announced in October. Phase one of the merger involved defining the high-level branch structure of the new operation. Phase two, the current phase, involves consulting and taking decisions on the detailed design of each of the new branches. This has involved examining the current structure and identifying and removing duplication, as well as finding efficiencies in how services are delivered. So until then, must probing of the new set-up and its implications, perhaps remain just so much speculation?

Ending on a high
Rugby history on show at museum by Brian Eastwood
The season may be over for the Dargaville Marlins but the under 13 rugby team maintained their enthusiasm until the very end. In their last game against Southern Combined, on Saturday August 20, the Marlins scraped home 22–18 in a hard-fought match. Team members and their parents would like to extend a big thank you to Micky Hanan and Ross Gillespie for looking after the boys throughout the season, adding that the team has grown and progressed during this time. After a string of wins, the Dargaville Marlins can end the season on a high.
Spreading Northland
With the Rugby World Cup now less than two weeks away, Dargaville Museum has lent a little local colour to that nationwide tournament with their Northern Wairoa Rugby history exhibition. On show are old and new photos of past club and representative teams ranging from an historic Aratapu Rugby Football Club of 1898 to modern Dargaville High School teams. Have a look, you would be sure to recognise someone you know — perhaps even yourself. Locals, as well as visitors to town, can remember and reflect on how rugby used to be. And there are many other treasures, including old programmes that will perhaps bring back memories of games that you saw or maybe played in. But no one will remember the days when the displayed 1906 and 1914 Northern Wairoa rugger caps were worn. After the recent annual general meeting of Dargaville Museum at the Lighthouse, the more than 40 volunteer members who attended were invited by re-elected President Don Elliott, to be the first to see the exhibition. Elliott told the meeting that it had been a year of challenges but it had also been a rewarding one. “Financially we are in a sound position. This is a very good result considering it is now more expensive for tourists to come to New Zealand from United States and Europe but we are hoping for a boost from the Rugby World Cup. “We must continue to play our part to make our area an interesting place to stay for a few days. Kaipara District Council must also have a clear plan to support groups such as the Kauri Coast Promotion Society that works really hard to promote the district. Tourists we talk to are always impressed with Pouto peninsula, and recent visitors to Kelly Bay considered it a hidden jewel. “We are still operating with a constitution written 25 years ago. It was appropriate then but it now needs to be reviewed to bring it up to date with modern operating practices.” Before the meeting moved off to the exhibition hall and afternoon tea, President Don Elliott presented two members, Penny Armbrust and Pene McKenzie with Life Membership to acknowledge their valuable efforts for the Museum.
The precise way to grow Newly re-elected president of the Dargaville Museum, Don Elliott, inspecting the rugby display

Wellsford adopting Canada for the RWC
As the Rugby World Cup draws closer, communities across New Zealand are preparing to welcome visitors by adopting a second team from one of the participating countries. Wellsford has chosen Canada and Wellsford Promotions Association volunteers are co-ordinating Canadian-themed events with pancakes, street music and Canadian mounties. “Wellsford is currently completing a town tidy up in the central business district. Already, many businesses have cleaned up their shop frontages, wood-chipped their garden beds and water blasted or painted signs, seats and shelters. Many community groups have been working together to ‘Make Wellsford Sparkle’,” says vice chair, Julie Hawkes. “We have also adopted Heather Ede, our resident Canadian from the Citizens Advice Bureau, to assist us with all things Canadian.” The iconic railway station, which ultimately determined the location of Wellsford’s township, will be painted by the Christian Fellowship Church and Canadian decorations are to be installed with 900 metres of bunting flags. “Key dates will be Canada’s games on September 14, 18 and 27 and their game against the All Blacks on October 2. Wellsford is also participating in the Auckland Heritage Festival at Memorial Park on September 17 and this will include a Rugby World Cup photo exhibition and of course, all things Canadian. During the world cup, local businesses will be screening matches, adding Canadian delicacies to their menus, wearing the Canadian team’s colours and providing entertainment. A sports mural is also being designed during this period as part of a Uniquely Wellsford Initiative. The mural will tell the story of Wellsford and will be painted at the cup’s conclusion.
Aratapu Wild Boar Hunt
“It is likely that the Canada team will be based elsewhere and will fly to their Whangarei match, but we would love to host them in our town,” adds Julie. “Wellsford Rugby Club has offered the use of their facilities for training, and there is an open invitation for the team to visit.”
The popular Aratapu Wild Boar Hunt kicks off this weekend, September 3 and 4, and it is shaping up to be an exciting weekend for all the family. Once again, the competition will accommodate men, women and children, and will coincide with Father’s Day celebrations across New Zealand. “Bring the family,” says Aratapu Tavern co-proprietor, Donice Morris. “It’s not all about the hunters — there will be plenty of other entertainment too. “The hunting starts at midnight on Friday and this is followed by the heaviest boar weigh-in on Saturday but, like last year, Sunday will be the really big day. “The final weigh-in is at 5pm, however the Hokianga Country and Western Music Club will kick off at noon and we’ll be in the Garden Bar — come rain or shine. “Throughout the weekend, we will have raffles and auctions benefitting the Maori Wardens, Project Promise and the Aratapu Netball team. Spit roast meals and will also be available.” The Aratapu Wild Boar Hunt has regained strength over the last couple of years and Donice hopes that this trend will continue in 2011. “There will be plenty of entertainment for competing hunters, their family and friends and, of course, country and western music fans.” The courtesy van will be operating as well as the tavern’s usual bar, restaurant and accommodation facilities.
