However, alongside the massive machinery, off-road bikes and gleaming new cars and utes, there are a whole lot of attractions to keep everyone entertained. Field days president John Phillips and event coordinator Luciana Schwarz have thought of a long list of fun ideas to make this year’s field days special.

Patrons can navigate the quirky maze in maize, planted especially for the field days by Pioneer and Dave Wordsworth

Contracting. It’s a 3D puzzle that young and old alike can plunge into, but it’s not at all scary, and there’s no way to really get lost — just a brainteasing challenge.

Then, there are the sheep dog trials, which, as last year, will culminate with a fun event on Saturday when humans try to do the job of the trusty, welltrained canines. If that’s not enough of a chuckle, visitors can take in some highspeed thrills with the ride-on lawn mower racing. Intrepid ‘pilots’ from as far away as Taranaki are ready to hit the turf.

The tractor pull contest will once again be a standout, with massive horsepower on display. Motorised monsters of the open field compete for glory, and it takes

a lot of skill and courage to get all that power to the ground. This year, there’s an open challenge out there from a team that spans three generations: grandfather, father and son. Will another farming family step up to contest this odd title?

Add in carnival-style rides, a mini water park, including the nation’s biggest inflatable water slide, a petting zoo of friendly farm animals, rides on the mini Mack truck, and even a massive field of sunflowers for some sunny selfies, and you’ve got quite a day of action. That is even before you factor in a huge market full of fun stalls and one of the biggest selections of food ever seen at the field days. ¢

this publication highlighted residents’ fears in River Road, Dargaville, that significant subsidence posed a flooding and erosion threat to their homes. Now, the ground has given way further, and 24 locals, almost the entire population of this stretch of road, have signed a petition imploring the council for a speedy solution. A string ‘depth gauge’ shows the position of the original sea wall. p A new mural has been added to the Dargaville riverside, thanks to a donation of skills and material from Bunnings Warehouse, the design talents of Ellen Kerssens (pictured), some logistical help from Sue Curtis of the Dargaville Community Development Board, wall space from the Dargaville Club, and the creativity of a group of Dargaville Primary School students (pictured). The mural features a summer scene from Ripiro Beach encouraging respect for nature and the environment. p Ruawai College students gathered last Friday to don their house colours and compete in a series of track and field challenges featuring traditional sports such as the javelin, discus, 100-metre dash and long jump. The long-established school tradition is part of the fierce but friendly inter-house rivalry, bringing extra colour and enthusiasm to events at the college all year round.

Field days welcome Welcome from Kaipara District Council

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 38th Northland Field Days. Our dedicated voluntary committee, associate members and community helpers, along with our sole employee, have worked hard over the last 12 months to bring another great event.

We have maintained, in line with our charitable trust status, the commitment to invest in Northland’s agricultural future. We are pleased to give financial support to numerous Northland organisations and clubs again.

We see this event as an opportunity for town and country to unite in an event to share and promote the wonderful lifestyle sectors that our country has to offer to ensure a solid foundation of support for our primary industry through the partnership we have with exhibitors.

Exhibitors will be offering technological expertise, support and the best deals to be had over the three days. This event creates an opportune time for farmers and the public to have dealers, service providers and attractions in one place to talk to at their convenience.

On behalf of the Northland Field Days, I hope you all experience a great time and enjoy what there is on offer at New Zealand’s friendliest field days. I wish you all a very successful and safe 2024.

Welcome, welcome, welcome! It’s that time of year again, and I am thrilled to extend a hearty Kaipara welcome to everyone visiting our district for the Northland Field Days, the biggest annual agricultural gathering in Northland.

For many of us, this worldclass event is the highlight of the calendar, drawing locals as well as people from all over New Zealand. We are proud that it is hosted right here in Dargaville, a testament to our district’s rich agricultural history and the wealth of knowledge and experience we have to offer.

If you have come from outside of Kaipara for the event, be sure to check out some of the many offerings of our district. The Kauri Museum, in Matakohe, and Kai Iwi Lakes are just a few of the must-see attractions.

Once again, welcome to Kaipara, and we hope you have a wonderful time at the Northland Field Days. If you are a new or returning visitor, know that you are among friends. I’ll see you there!

Te Whatu Ora Te Tai Tokerau has its mobile BreastScreen Aotearoa clinic on the corner of Gladstone and 90 Normanby Street until March 15.

“Regular screening can find things you can’t see or feel. It is important to return every two years so that breast cancers are found when still small,” said breast and retinal screening equity manager Louisa Kingi.

The mobile clinic visits Dargaville twice a year to ensure women in the area have access to the service locally. Urgent cases are given precedence.

“The BreastScreen Aotearoa mobile bus is providing free breast screening to women aged 45–69 years in Dargaville. Women aged 45 to 69 years can have a free mammogram every two years to check for breast cancer.

one wheel across New Zealand

A record-setting odyssey passed through Dargaville last week as two men piloting electric unicycles followed the road to Poutō as part of a trip from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

Linus Gilbert and Robert Beck have chosen to tackle the adventurous challenge of promoting alternative means of transport, highlighting the looming energy crisis affecting the developed world.

“I live in Christchurch, and I don’t own a car, just three of these,” says Mr Beck, who is chronicling his excursion on YouTube under the name Kiwi Wheels.

“I wanted to do this to promote electric unicycles, but it’s also something I wanted to experience. It’s an adventure.”

“It only costs about $1.20 to charge up one of these, and on that, you can travel up to 140 kilometres,” says Mr Gilbert. “The top speed is 80 kilometres an hour, and they are very easy to control, with no hand controls.”

Like his fellow adventurer, Linus Gilbert is making a video record of his mission to Bluff, which will receive regular updates through The Rolling Kiwi, his social media connection. Right now, the pair are

wheeling in unison with a large contingent of bicycle riders taking part in this year’s Tour of Aotearoa.

Everything they need to complete their 2,074km quest is carried on board their one-wheeled transportation. They’ve even modified a set of gloves each to include small rear-vision mirrors in a flash of ‘number eight wire’ Kiwi ingenuity. ¢

Five targeted rates up for discussion Fight to keep rates affordable

A draft consultation document, presented to elected members of the Kaipara District Council last week, would put the question of targeted rates to the public.

Targeted rates are often put forward as a fair option, compelling those who utilise a council service to pay for it and reducing the general rates taken from citizens who may never do so. The draft document poses the question to residents: ‘Do you think that targeted rates are more equitable?’

The first proposed rate involves pools, libraries and parks. The draft suggests a $481 annual charge for residential homes in Dargaville, Paparoa, Maungatūroto, Kaiwaka and Mangawhai to fund these facilities. Those outside these zones would pay $195 annually.

A second targeted rate possibility is changing how forestry operators are charged, with a view to roading remediation. Right now, the rate is charged according to land value. Petitioners to the council have suggested that a calculation based on hectares is fairer.

A third suggestion is to support the Mangawhai Museum, with $103,000 raised each year by adding $20 to the

rates charged for each household in Mangawhai.

Two levels for a targeted rate to support Dargaville’s Sportsville complex are tabled. These are $9.54 for each home yearly in all of west Kaipara, to cover operating expenses, or $21.04 for each home each year to allow for future expansion. The final targeted rate change would amalgamate both parts of the Raupō Drainage Board’s coverage under one annual sum.

Councillors will approve a final draft in March before public consultation on these and other questions goes live in April. ¢

Rate increases of more than 33 per cent have been discussed as part of the Kaipara District Council’s three-year LTP, including an 18.3 per cent hike this year and increases exceeding seven per cent in 2025 and 2026.

“The council is having to provide for a 42% increase in costs as a result of the rapid rise of inflation,” said KDC general manager Sue Davidson.

“The proposed increases breach our target of having affordable rates; however, these are what other councils in New Zealand are also facing.”

A concerted attempt has been made to keep rates down, with council staff finding savings in many areas. For example, the controversial removal of climate change expenditure will save $450,000 across the three years of the shortened LTP, while savings of more than $3 million have been achieved by cutting the council salaries budget and $1.08 million saved from external consultant costs.

“We were thrown a real curveball in December by having to take back Three Waters,” said Ms Davidson.

“So all our plans turned to custard. That impacts quite a lot on our capital programme and our debt, and obviously our rates as well. We had originally thought we would start with no debt, but now we will finish, after all of our

projects, with $53 million in debt. Ninety per cent of that is Three Waters.”

The government will not assist or underwrite local councils’ water works. That means big delays in water infrastructure projects in Kaipara and the aforementioned debt and costs.

“Projects have been reduced through extending the use of current assets; sweating the assets as much as possible,” said Sue Davidson. “This is likely to lead to increased breakages in the medium term and is not best practice but makes it affordable.” ¢

Flagbearer for science

u by Amy Fifita

Ruawai College head boy Lucas Hassall will be one of 500 leading young scientists worldwide attending the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) in July.

“I have always loved science and the idea that it can help people in various ways. It can better someone’s life, health and the environment. My favourite science is biology and medicine,” said Lucas.

“I am hoping to become a GP and work in a rural community to give back to them — that is the ultimate dream.”

Lucas attended the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum and was asked to apply for the LIYSF. Princess Anne is one of the keynote organisers and speakers.

“It is similar to a summer school. It covers all aspects of science — biology, medicine, artificial intelligence and robotics. There are day visits to the Oxford and Cambridge universities.

“I want to make the most of this opportunity. I am going to ask heaps of questions, and it creates the possibility of studying abroad.”

Lucas aims to fundraise $10,000 for travel costs, course fees and

accommodation for the 15-day science programme. To donate to the cause, visit givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-getlucas-to-london-liysf. He is also running a meat raffle and will be at Festival 24 on Saturday, March 16, at Ruawai Primary School.

“We were sponsored by Maungie Meats. I am thankful to my mum, and being on the More FM was a great help. Fundraising is going well, and I am very grateful for the amazing community response.” ¢

Remembering cyclone heroes

u by Andy Bryenton

When Cyclone Gabrielle struck Dargaville a year ago, everyday people banded together to help their fellow citizens; now, that effort has been memorialised.

A cross and plaque were unveiled last week on the grounds of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Dargaville, a house of worship that provided a safe haven for evacuees during the cyclone.

“A year on, today, it is all about acknowledging those who helped. Our community was absolutely incredible,” said the Kaipara District Council community adviser Amanda Bennett.

The plaque bears a simple inscription: ‘This cross now stands in thanksgiving for all emergency first responders’.

Anglican vicar Frank Nelson said that the cross forming a major part of the memorial was once part of the church hall, where cyclone victims sheltered at the height of the storm and flooding. The cross, installed in 1907, was damaged by cyclone winds but has been repurposed in a gesture of gratitude.

Representatives of many groups which played a role in Dargaville and Kaipara’s resilience during the weather event were present, including police, firefighters, ambulance, iwi representatives, members

of the Rapid Relief Team, Civil Defence and KDC. Those who volunteered during the cyclone were also represented, as were some who were forced to flee rising waters and battering winds.

“I was a victim of the cyclone,” said councillor Ash Nayyar, who was forced to evacuate his home a year ago.

“However, I feel blessed to have been helped by those who were here to assist us.”

Another lasting legacy of Cyclone Gabrielle, as well as the memorial, is the foundation of a Dargaville disaster response group to ensure swift action in future emergencies. ¢

plans well advanced for a party in the gardens.

“This will be an event for the whole family, as well as a chance to meet and mingle with top rally drivers,” says event coordinator Monique Sheri Alves.

“While you don’t have to be a rally fan to have fun at this event, we should all celebrate that Dargaville is hosting such a significant sporting occasion.”

To help share a warm Dargaville welcome for the hundreds of people who will come to witness and compete in the rally, Monique and her team have put together a memorable party for the Friday night before. From 5pm until 11pm, the Taha Awa Riverside Gardens will come alive with music featuring Jimi Cara and DJ Steve, combining live music and classic anthems from the decks. There will also be an entire Kai Road of street cuisine and food trucks to entice guests.

place for next week’s large motorsport event.

Key to the success of Dargaville as the host of a rally with four special stages is a rally service park, the home base for 60 teams, their cars, tools, mechanics and technicians, strategists and tacticians. This hub will be situated in the two large car parks facing the Northern Wairoa River, spanning the area from the Northern Wairoa Boating Club through to the town’s iconic gumdigger statue, where a starting line will be established and the chequered flag dropped to begin the race.

“Many thanks for all the feedback and support, the wairua is amazing and we are confident that this will be a little cracker of an event,” says rally chairperson Marty Roestenburg. Marty has been liaising with central Dargaville

business owners to ensure that they can access their premises to help greet the hundreds of racers and fans who will descend on the town on March 9.

Thirty-eight racing team marquees will fill the Parenga Street car park, along with a row of food trucks and trailers catering to the crowds. Classic cars and hotrods will form up on display in Kapia Street, along with even more race team tents, which will stretch around Totara Street, including tarmac areas kindly donated by local businesses Godfrey Motors and AD Focus. There’s even a ‘rally vehicle end of event traction and gearbox endurance testing zone’ near Rally HQ at the boating club, where celebratory figure-eights and tyre smoke will greet victory on the special stages. ¢

Electricity Pricing Schedule

Understanding power pricing

Your ret ailer sets the price of your electricity. This is usually a fixed daily charge and a cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) which cover all the costs from electricity generation to transporting it to your home or business

Nor thp ower s charges are used t o run our electricit y net work, providing a 24/7 service, repairing, maint aining and up grading our assets, like lines and subst at ions They are charged as ‘lines charges’ t o ret ailers, who then decide how and what they want t o charge their cust omers On average in New Zealand, lines charges make up ab out 27% of your t ot al p ower bill In addit ion, our charges include the costs from Transp ower t o use the nat ional grid t o transp or t electricit y from where it is generat ed t o our net work (ab out 10 5% of your p ower bill)

Northpower has recently set the prices which we will charge electricity ret ailers for 2024/2025 Compared to last year, these prices have increased on average by around 10%. This is caused by three main changes:

1 The cost of running our network has gone up – the effects of inflation that we all feel in our own households is also experienced by Northpower as the costs of labour, fuel, equipment and materials continues to increase

2 Our network, like most other networks around the country, was built decades ago and many of the assets are reaching end of life This means we have significantly increased our investment for replacing and upgrading our assets, such as power lines, power poles, and subst ations

3 The cost of b orrowings t o fund this investment has also increased due t o higher int erest rat es similar t o many homes mor t gage rat es T h e a b o ve c o

Fixed Prices

We are gradually adjusting our prices to increase the fixed component (e g the daily charge) compared to the variable component (e g. the charge per kWh). This is because the costs to run an electricity network are mostly fixed, and other than building extra capacity for peak times, it does not generally cost us much more if you use more electricity Our network has capacity outside of peak times (e.g. in the middle of the day or after 9pm at night ), and we want people to be able to use this capacity without having to pay extra lines charges Over time most of our revenue will come from the fixed charge, and the variable component (e.g the charge per unit of electricity used) will be used to provide an incentive to use power during offpeak times to avoid congestion only

This has been made possible by changes to the Government ’ s Low Fixed Charge regulations that recognises the need for this change

Time of Use Pricing

We introduced Time of Use pricing four years ago for residential and business consumers with communicating smart meters Time of Use pricing has different charges depending on the time of day that electricity is used.

This is because electricity networks are a bit like roads - they can get congested at times of the day when everyone wants to use them.

The peak use times for our networks are usually 7-9:30am in the morning when people get up and ready for their day, and between 5:30-8pm in the evening when people come home and use kitchen appliances, washing machines, televisions, hot water and heaters etc

When networks get congested, we have to invest in extra lines and equipment to accommodate this increased peak demand - like building extra lanes onto a road Over time, this additional investment will increase the costs to everyone If we all shift some of our energy use to off-peak times (like turning on your dishwasher or dryer later at night or charging your EV overnight) we will reduce the need for costly upgrades and share in the benefits by keeping prices lower We use Time of Use to charge your ret ailer – they then decide whether or not they pass this on to you

If you are interested in learning more about Time of Use pricing, you can read more on our website, or t alk to your ret ailer about their different plans

Impact of Change

We recognise that with any pricing changes, the tot al cost for some consumers may go down, and for others it may go up However, these changes are designed to ensure that over time everyone pays a fair contribution towards the fixed costs of running of Northpower’s community-owned electricity network. This means that in the future, lines pricing will likely be similar to today’s “unlimited internet” pricing allowing people to use more power from our network at little to no extra cost

Export Generation

Our export generation charge goes towards the costs of managing generation connections on our network Set at 1c/kWh, this is expected to generate only about $76,000 in revenue this year When too much power (generation) is injected into one area of the network (for example, from people with surplus power generated by their home solar panels), it can cause issues which then affects other consumers To balance this, we incur costs to manage and review applications and to monitor the network We believe it is fairer to recover these charges from the property owners who are generating power, rather than from all our customers

Prolan rust protects 52-metre sprayer

Customer Greg Lovett is stoked with the protection provided by a coating of New Zealand-made Prolan Extreme corrosion protection on his Agrifac Endurance 52-metre sprayer.

Based in the South Island, Greg has an extensive horticultural operation growing all types of vegetables, onions, carrots, beetroot, oats, wheat and barley. As part of his operation, a large agricultural sprayer is used to apply liquid urea, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides.

Greg made an enquiry to Prolan NZ asking if Prolan Extreme corrosion protection

could be used to protect his agricultural gear. This environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor made from lanolin has International NSF food-grade approvals, so it fits perfectly with his horticultural operation.

In July 2023, Chris, the maintenance manager at Lovett Farm, applied a coating of Prolan to the sprayer to coincide with the busy production period. The whole boom of the sprayer was washed down before the application and allowed to dry off. The product was applied using an airless/painttype sprayer available from retail stores such as Super Cheap or Repco. One litre of Prolan covers 8–10 square metres.

Chris says: “An application of ‘Prolan’ is an easy process with minimal preparation required on the surface to be coated. The clean-up of the spray gear was easy, too, with a quick clean of the sprayer with a hot water flush.”

In January 2024, Chris did a quality check on all the gear in the business’s downtime. As part of this, the sprayer boom was checked for cracks and general maintenance was carried out. The Prolan coating was removed to see if there were any problems.

Chris says: “To remove the Prolan Extreme, a hot wash high-pressure washer was applied to the boom. It took about three hours at temperatures above 100C to remove the Prolan coating — the whole process was

easy.” The results speak for themselves, say Chris and Greg, “Unbelievable the boom returned to its original tiptop condition with no corrosion or parts replacement required. The Prolan remained on the surface; although it became dusty, the protection was there.

“Chris would recommend a coating to any machinery, even his father’s hedge shelter trimmer blades, for easy maintenance and protection.”

Going forward, the team at Lovett Farms will be following a process of applying a Prolan coating to machinery and equipment in the business downtime and then removing and recoating once a year. That ensures any problems are detected early, prevents parts replacement and the assets retain a very good resale value.

Prolan Extreme natural environmentally friendly rust protection, safe on the user, easy to apply and protects assets long-term. ¢

decades have not slowed Kevin Sowter and his Window and Door Services team down.

On the contrary, its latest move, to 8 Murdoch Street, has been a big expansion for the business. It now features three vans, three glaziers, an apprentice and an administrator to keep their appointment books full.

Not that this has been a problem, as Kevin says he and his team are in hot demand, for their skills in repairing and installing glass, as well as security doors, locks, pet doors, insect screens and many more vital fixtures around the home.

“We’re always fielding interesting questions about people’s repairs and projects,” says Kevin. “People often ask if we can fix things with a bit of character or history, and to be honest that’s part of the thrill of the job, giving things new life.”

That means working with oldfashioned windows on characterful kauri villas and coming up with modern solutions for more contemporary homes. It’s all part of the day’s work for a qualified glazier, a trade which has not diminished in importance or need through the nearly 30 years Kevin has been involved in it.

“I started out working from home, then in 1998, I married Rae and set up

shop in Ranfurly Street. Then came the move to Gladstone Street, where we were situated for many years. This latest move has given us more space. Not that I’d like us to be here all the time — we’re happier out on the job,” says Kevin.

He’s ably assisted in the business by trusted glaziers Shannon Sowter and Ramon Cooper, the latter of whom recently made his move back to the north, after a long stay in the South Island. They’re joined by apprentice Leonard Hurlock, who will have completed three years of training this June, and office administrator Karen Day, who Kevin says they could not do without.

While technology may have changed, and a selection of company vans has come and gone, some things have remained the same in the business of Window and Door Services. A speedy response in an emergency, a trusted team to take care of home security and peace of mind, and a problemsolving attitude have all added up to 29 years of success. ¢

Opening new worlds

Amazing Minds is a new business established in Dargaville by former deputy principal Diane Papworth.

As a licensed Davis Dyslexia® facilitator, Diane’s mission is to empower neurodivergent individuals of all ages (5–80 years) who experience symptoms of dyslexia (reading and spelling), dyscalculia (maths), dyspraxia (coordination), dysgraphia (handwriting) and ADHD by unlocking their learning abilities and interactions in a lifechanging way.

The Davis Dyslexia Correction programme was developed by Ron Davis (The Gift of Dyslexia), who is dyslexic himself. It emphasises a multi-sensory approach to learning and aims to help individuals with dyslexia develop strategies that help with learning and reading.

Walt Disney, Richard Branson, Jamie Oliver, Richard Taylor (Weta) and Keira Knightly. Fun fact — 50%

the world’s billionaires have dyslexia.

The Davis approach relies on using the mental talents that dyslexic people and many struggling learners share. There are many famous dyslexics: Albert Einstein,

Diane offers fun and practical one-toone programmes, focussing on the root cause, using strength-based tools and effective learning strategies to meet the client’s needs and goals. She also offers programmes for ADHD, maths, dyspraxia and handwriting.

Fitness and faith

Dargaville residents will have a new opportunity to get fit, meet new friends and move to the music as a pair of local fitness enthusiasts launch a community group with a difference.

Rebecca Davidson and Waima King both have a long association with music and fitness, and they have responded to a need in the community by creating a new kind of class combining movement for wellness with gospel music.

“From the conversations I’ve had, this is something people really want to be involved in,” says Waima.

“It’s non-denominational, and it’s a lot of fun. What better way to uplift each other and motivate and encourage each other? This is an alternative that’s open to all, no matter their age or fitness level.”

Rebecca and Waima have picked a selection of upbeat songs with a gospel theme, intending to host fun, informal fitness sessions at the Anglican church hall on Hokianga Road. Everyone’s welcome, say the instructors and the first session will be at 9am on March 16. Much thought has gone into creating an exercise programme that’s balanced with the motivational and meditative component of faith-based music.

“For example, a component of the class will be a moving meditation to the psalms, working on strength and balance,” says Rebecca.

With a long history of uplifting music to select from and an open door to all denominations and, indeed, to those who are irreligious but just want to boost their health and energy, the two experienced instructors expect their new idea to be a local hit. ¢

Maungatūroto is turning green

Maungatūroto Rotary Club will host a special event in March, celebrating Celtic heritage and community togetherness with an Irish-themed party at the Maungatūroto Country Club.

Keith Shadbolt, a stalwart local Rotarian, was able to assist when the club started planning a community get-together; his cousin happens to be a member of one of New Zealand’s most respected Irish bands.

Saturday, March 23, comes six days after Saint Patrick’s Day, but as Paddy Hallissey of the McSweeney Brothers Irish Band says, it’s a whole week of celebration.

“There’s also a ‘saint practice day’ or two, in fact, we have a lot of those,” he says, with a bit of the good humour and upbeat attitude, the hallmark of the McSweeney Brothers’ music.

“We’ve been together 30 years as a band, and during that time, we must have played every Irish pub in Auckland several times. We’re keen to share our music with Maungatūroto,” said Paddy.

The Rotary-hosted show will see the band of four, including acclaimed fiddle player Marian Burns, delivering the classics of the genre, as well as other rousing good-time songs.

“We don’t just do Irish songs; we do a lot of crossovers, including rock and country classics,” says Paddy. “We like to do songs that people know all the words to, such as Sweet Caroline, American Pie and The Gambler, for example.”

In Irish terms, it’s all about that quality known as the Craic, meaning fun, laughter and the enjoyment of life. If you’re keen to don the green and join the party, email maungaturotocountryclub@gmail.com or visit Tony’s stationers in Hurndall Street to secure a ticket. ¢

Reunited with gratitude A horseback spectacular

Kapehu Marae, near Mititai, was recently reopened with a ceremony and celebrations after approximately a threeyear closure.

“The original Kapehu Marae opening was in 1999, and this is not the first marae. We have shifted it, and this is the latest place. We had to close it because it needed repairing. The Ministry of Internal Affairs came through with the funding,” said chair Margaret Mutu.

“Our marae was closed for nearly three years, which has been hard for whānau. When our people pass away, they were unable to lay on their own marae. We are hugely grateful for the help of Naumai, Ōtūrei, Rīpia and the other marae.”

Professor Margaret says they received huge support from Te Uri O Hau, Te Roroa and Te Rūnanga O Ngāti Whātua. Representatives from each iwi and other groups gathered for the occasion. The marae was reopened on Saturday, February 17, with a meal catered by the Waiti whānau.

“We were humbled by the amount of people who came — we were expecting

fewer people. They came from far and wide, and the minister who came to lift the tapu.”

Margaret has a special thanks to family member Shane Campbell for guiding them through the building process, obtaining funding and helping create a team.

“He continued to navigate when whānau were getting upset. I am also grateful to our treasurer Shannon Warwick and the Waiti whānau and the kuia and kaumātua who monitored and cared for the people while it was being repaired.” ¢

The Pakōtai Parakao Community Group Horse Trek is celebrating its 20th year with riders attracted from across New Zealand.

“When my children started Playcentre, they suggested we do a pizza fundraiser. I got the help of the ex-stockmen of the valley Des and the late Clarry Maddox and organised the horse trek instead,” said the Pakōtai Parakao Community Group event coordinator.

The annual fundraising event has contributed to numerous community causes like the hall and the school. The event has been going on for 20 years.

“Recently, the Pakōtai School took their student on a trip of a lifetime to the snow and multipleday adventures. That was supported financially by our group.

“We have trekked the valley from Waimatenui to Parakao on both sides of the river. We ride up into the hills with amazing views right down to Waipu Cove and out to Mount Manaia on a clear day.”

Participants will set off on March 8 and finish on March 10. During their experience, riders will experience native bush, clear farmland, river

crossing, swimming opportunities, huge mountains and the Tarai Station waterfall.

“It is as close as you can get to riding in the South Island, just without the snow.

The mountains are huge and spectacular. This year’s event will host 100 horses.

“I love the community spirit atmosphere, and it is a great fundraiser for our valley. We couldn’t do it without the generous landowners and sponsors, fabulous marshalls and local people who cook and bake for the trek.” ¢

National working for Northland

As the new National Party MP for Northland, I am excited to be starting the political year under our new coalition government.

I have seen the challenges our farmers have faced over the last six years. Having four new gumboot-wearing farmers added to the National caucus, complemented with new representation from our coalition partners, means the future is bright with some of the strongest rural representation parliament has had in years.

Northland has had a rough go since weathering the storm, metaphorically and literally, over the last year. The social and economic impact of Cyclone Gabrielle has been seen across our region in the last 12 months, especially highlighting the weakness of our roading infrastructure.

The 58-day closure of the Brynderwyns last year was tough on our local economy, with another nine weeks of closure planned this year. I have spoken with many businesses directly affected by the uncertainty, and as part of our coalition agreement, work will begin to find a new route around the Brynderwyns. Resilient roads are vital to ensuring our growth and success as a region.

Among some of the worst affected were Northland’s kūmara growers, some of whom couldn’t pull anything from the ground at all due to flooding. I am pleased to see they are having a better year so far, and I hope the season brings good weather and a bumper crop. Attention needs to be brought to the work of the

Rural Support Trust and Federated Farmers for their work in cyclone-affected areas. Whether it be replacing fencing on rural properties, making house calls or advocating at central and local government levels to get our rural communities the support they need, their work has been vital.

I’d also like to offer my congratulations to the organisers of Northland Field Days.

Despite the hardships and challenges

faced by the committee in recent years, this event serves as a wonderful opportunity to bring Northland together and honour our rural communities and their contribution to our region.

This year will be a year of change. We will be a government that delivers on our campaign promises, strengthens our economy, and builds resilient infrastructure for all New Zealanders. We are only just getting started. ¢

A new principal for Ruawai

Ruawai College farewelled Raeleen Harre at the end of 2023 and has now welcomed a new principal to lead the school into the new year.

Experienced educator Aidyn Rasmussen comes to the leadership role following teaching at a large school in Auckland’s central suburb of Māngere. He says he’s excited to have the opportunity to work with the faculty and students of Ruawai College, a school with which he has a historical connection.

“When I taught at Onehunga High School, we went on geography camps with Ruawai students,” says Aidyn. “I met with Deborah Steele and we took our students together down to Ruapehu. When the position of principal here came up, it piqued my interest as I knew the school.”

Mr Rasmussen’s recollections of those adventure camps fit well with his guiding philosophy that learning can happen anywhere. He says it’s the role of a principal and a school to equip young minds for a changing and fastpaced world.

“I think about the world when I started teaching,” he says “Everything is very different now. This school has a great reputation, and it goes back to giving students options, making sure we can support any learning pathway.”

The new principal says he appreciates getting to know his fellow educators and having an open conversation about how they can take Ruawai College to the next level. At the same time, Mr Rasmussen is adjusting to country life. He says that living next door to the school means he’s pleased to be free of the Auckland commute, and enjoying friendly people and the sense of community in Ruawai. ¢

New opportunities to come

Ruawai Primary School principal Wayne Steele will farewell Kaipara shortly and relocate to Snells Beach with his family.

“My family has had a door open, creating a new opportunity. We like a challenge and the occasion for growth and change, which is something we believe in.”

Wayne will step back from principalship and plans to be more of a dad to his children. He was previously the Tangowahine School principal for seven years.

“The past four and a half years at Ruawai Primary have been a pleasure to be a part of. It has been challenging with Covid and a cyclone. However, the school and community have been amazingly supportive throughout the once-in-a-lifetime trials.

“The staff are dedicated and enthusiastic and want to do the best for our tamariki. They are on a learning journey themselves in introducing new initiatives and building their teacher capability through professional development that empowers our learners to be ever-growing, individual, engaged and connected.”

Wayne says some highlights have been improving the property and grounds with play areas and native planting. He has also enjoyed modernising the classrooms, developing teacher knowledge and skills, employing quality

staff, and the school performance of Haki and the Kūmara Vine.

“I will miss all the tamariki, who come to school with fantastic smiles, the dedicated staff and the supportive community. I encourage the future principal to be active and engage with the community, as the most important thing is he tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata (it is the people),” Wayne says. ¢

Replenished soils for good health

There will be several exhibitors that can help farmers with their soil health and mineral content at the Northland Field Days.

It improves the structure of the soil and microbial life, ensuring the plants and animals grow well. The more nutrientdense the ground is, the more goodness

the livestock and those who eat it get. Production amounts do not reflect good nutrient levels because minerals are distributed amongst the fruiting crop.

Fortunately, various products on the market can assist agriculturalists in bolstering the minerals in the soil. It will improve the quality of growth, productivity and health of a crop. That means those eating it, be it animal or human, will also receive a healthy boost of nutrients.

Adding cobalt supplements can significantly increase live weight gain in livestock. Animals convert it into B12 and humans ingest it mainly from eating meat or dairy products. The micronutrient is essential for the growth of various plants.

If the soil has low molybdenum, it will reflect in the plant — leaves will turn light green, and older leaves will be yellow. The mineral assists farmers wanting to increase their clover production for good fodder. This vital mineral assists plants with processing nitrogen and phosphorus and enzymes with forming pollen.

A suitable copper supply is significant when growing seeds, fruits and flowers.

p Farmers’ market browsers can get more nutrient-dense produce when the soil where it is harvested is healthy

Indicators of copper-deficient vegetation are stunted growth and dark green leaves. It also plays a role in creating new cells as it helps convert amino acids into proteins when creating new cells.

Manganese allows plant life to germinate and encourages new growth, while iron enables plants to transfer oxygen around their cells and helps produce chlorophyll. Symptoms for a lack of these nutrients are yellowing in the

veins of newer leaves. Zinc affects stem growth and carbohydrate metabolism. Deficiency is shown from yellowing in terminal leaves.

Boron aids the greenery in absorbing calcium. It works with calcium for cell wall formation and sugar movement. The results of restoring soil nutrients will provide high-quality nourishment to those who buy produce from farmers’ markets, shops and honesty boxes. ¢

Dargaville Little Theatre has assembled the biggest cast ever seen on the local stage, in an ambitious attempt to recreate the magical world of Oz.

With the rights secured and the cast selected, Dargaville’s amateur thespians are getting ready to master the dialogue, choreography and songs of The Wizard of Oz, the first time this famous play has been brought to Dargaville.

“This is the largest cast we have ever had, in living memory,” said theatre president Eryn Wilson-Collins.

“We have 45 people here, not counting the backstage crew. We’re seeking people to help with set design and building right now. It’s a big job, so we are hoping to put a small team together of creative people with building skills.”

As well as being part of the theatre’s leadership, Ms Wilson-Collins is also stepping up to play one of the most iconic roles in fiction, the Wicked Witch of the West. Julianne Parkinson will direct this unprecedentedly large production.

L Frank Baum’s classic tale remains one of the bestselling books for children and inspired the most-watched film in cinema history. The Wizard of Oz has also been adapted for the stage many times, beginning in the early 1900s.

Rehearsals are underway, but contributors to the set design and production art needed to bring Oz to life would be very gratefully welcomed. If you can help, please email dargavillelittletheatre@gmail.com. ¢

An artistic welcome

u by Amy Fifita

Northland Field Days visitors will be in for a treat with the debut of silage bale mural attractions by local artists Micaela van den Berg and Renae Hutchins.

“It started with creating a new ticket booth. That left us with some open space, and we wondered what to do. John thought we should paint some silage bales. John Pickworth helped us with selecting some artists,” said event coordinator Luciana Schwarz.

The murals are being painted on stacked bales and will add a splash of colour to the agricultural event. The idea for the artistry was president John Phillips.

“It is something that came into my head, and it took off from there. It might draw others to come in next year, and we can open it bigger if required,” said president Phillips.

Up-and-coming artist Renae Hutchins, and award-winning muralist Micaela van den Berg offered their time and creativity. Visitors will see the murals as the enter the field days space.

“Renae is a young 19-year-old who wants to pursue an art career. It is awesome to be able to facilitate putting their art out there. She is stoked to have the opportunity,” Luciana said.

“It is a new attraction, and we are looking forward to it. As people come through the gates, they will be able to see the awesome works of art. Visitors will have a lot of fun taking photos. We are grateful for the artists who are volunteering their time.” ¢

Navigating new club rules

New rules for incorporated societies, a category covering many local clubs

Bureau is ready to help those making the change following their AGM.

All new groups covered by the act must use the new rules, and existing clubs and societies are encouraged to make the change after their 2024 annual general meeting, updating rules from 1908.

We asked the CAB what was needed to comply with the new rules, and the process was simple. All clubs and societies need 10 members, three of whom comprise a leadership committee, a legal name, a contact address and a constitution. Rumours that smaller groups may need to hire a full-time bookkeeper are false. The new rules remove the need to audit a group’s books unless they deal with millions of dollars each year.

Making a constitution may seem a daunting task, but it has been made easy

with the help of a constitution-making app, available free of charge online at is-register.companiesoffice.govt.nz by searching ‘constitution builder’.

This document will contain the club or society’s purpose, a declaration that it’s not for profit, rules about joining and leaving as a member, how the group will manage its money and record this, how disputes will be resolved, and how the rules of the group can be changed if they need to. Between the online app and some advice from the CAB, this should be easy to achieve.

Existing chairpeople, team coaches and group leaders are encouraged to talk to the Dargaville CAB on Parenga Street before their 2024 AGM. ¢

Mayor’s Message

Greetings,

I have to say, February has been a bonanza of celebrations and I have been attending all I can.

• I was privileged to attend the celebrations up at Waitangi earlier this month. I know many of you attended a fun day in Dargaville that was organised by Council. Prior to the celebrations I attended an official breakfast where I was introduced to many of the new Ministers, including the Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Separately, I had a good meeting with Matt Doocey who is the minister for Tourism and Hospitality. He is to follow up with a visit to Kaipara in the next couple of weeks. I also had a good conversation with Tama Potaka, Minister for Conservation and Ma¯ori Development about the Mangawhai Harbour restoration.

• New information boards down by the Northern Wairoa River. I am looking forward to residents and all our visitors learning new things about the important and incredibly diverse history of Dargaville. Council is proud to play a part in supporting Rotary’s project.

• I was delighted to be part of their opening event for DCDB’s new SEED coworking premises, a fantastic offering for community groups and small business owners.

Plus the annual Kaipara Citizen Awards celebrating four fantastic members of our community, and more.

Recently we passed the one year anniversary of the extreme weather events of 2023. For many, it is now business as usual. For others, I see every day the physical, emotional, and material impact the events have had on people.

For Council, we have made huge inroads but we’re still playing catch up in places. Our roading network took the biggest hit and while significant gains into repair and rebuild have been made, there is still a lot of work to do. Council discussions around the Long Term Plan for 2024—2027 have highlighted the ongoing recovery works still required. In April we will be coming to you for your feedback on our plans for the next three years, so make sure you stay tuned and be prepared to give us your thoughts.

Low rainfall levels and these long hot summer days bring the challenges of water supply into sharp focus. Many of us who are on tank supply are conserving water carefully and if you’re the owner of a plastic tank, you are likely to be seen regularly knocking the sides to check water levels. Earlier this month, water restrictions for Dargaville and Baylys Beach town supply were put in place. Council is keenly aware of the need to strengthen the water supply resilience for Dargaville and we continue to actively investigate the options available, all of which come at a significant cost now that three waters services remain on the books. We know there will be some tough decisions to be made.

Pedigree cat out of the bag

Ford has a long history of creating ST cars, the two letters denoting a sporty, racing-inspired driving experience.

Focus and Fiesta ST models are known for extra power, sharp handling and an overall suite of options designed to put a grin on drivers’ faces. Legendary racer Ken Block had a hand in creating the Focus ST, for example.

It might seem a little odd to give the full ST treatment to Ford’s Puma, the compact and economical little head-turner sitting in their range as the smallest SUV wearing the blue oval. However, those in the know will recall that the Puma badge went racing in the 1990s, attached to a different model and that it was anything but slow.

For the present iteration, Ford has stuck with a hybridised onelitre EcoBoost engine. Its tech wizards have managed to extract 125 kilowatts of power and 200 Nm of torque from this little block. The EcoBoost is awardwinning, and for good reason. It’s hard to believe that a single litre of anything, even concentrated rocket fuel, could provide such zip. A paddle-shift seven-speed gearbox smooths out power delivery and adds engagement.

Now, it’s not the more than 300 wild horses you’d find in Ken Block’s Focus, but there’s more to performance than just raw power. The Puma ST has better

torsional stiffness, improved handling, a quicker steering rack and bigger brakes. This combo makes for more precise cornering, with everything tuned for a more spirited deriving feel. As a nice bonus, the hybrid tech deployed here means you’ll have frugal fuel bills.

“The Ford Performance team called on all of its experience developing the original Puma ST to deliver ST signature fun-to-drive without losing the practicality of our compact SUV,” said Ford Performance manager, Europe division, Stefan Muenzinger.

So why this car, and why now? The Puma ST has been out since late last year but now could be its time to shine. That’s due to the looming deadline for electric cars to pay road user charges and the intimation from the government that soon all petrol taxes will be slashed, with RUCs for all vehicles. In that scenario, a non-plug-in hybrid, which is fun to drive,

like a very good bet.

Puma ST, therefore, makes sound economic sense,

may help the angel on your right shoulder team up with the devil on your left, who loves how it looks and drives. ¢

Ready to rock

The new Volkswagen Amarok ute debuted last year with a reimagining of the German brand’s pickup truck offering, and critics were quick to praise its polished and refined evolution.

“The Volkswagen design team has delivered a practical ute with unique styling and driving traits, which customers will testify,” said Jarlath Sweeney, president and chairman of the prestigious

International Pickup Award (IPUA) jury.

“This seventh running of the IPUA sees the new generation Amarok adding to the titles won in 2011 and again in 2017 with the upgraded version,” he said. Sweeney noted that the first and fourth top prizes in the award’s history also went to previous Amarok iterations.

There’s much to like about the Amarok, which has also added trophies from NZ4WD and Company Vehicle magazine to the VW cabinet. Drivers and award jurors cited the torque and smoothness of the ute’s drivetrain as a deciding factor. There are three engines to choose from, ranging from a two-litre unit boasting 405 Nm through to a twin-turbocharged version of the same delivering and even 500 Nm, and a big three-litre powerplant at the top of the range, generating 600 Nm of torque.

p Volkswagen’s Amarok has scooped a bundle of awards for its capabilities and comfort

the tarmac runs out. That aforementioned 4Motion system provides a good start, but other details have been attended to by VW engineers to ensure real off-road acuity. For example, while the wheelbase of the Amarok has grown by some 10cm, the body overhangs have been pared back to increase the ute’s ability to handle water crossings and big bumps. Chassis strength and ground clearance are up, too.

All of this power goes to the ground through a 10-speed shift-by-wire gearbox

and Volkswagen’s consummate fourwheel drive technology, 4Motion. What this means in practical terms is excellent grip and the ability to easily tow up to 3,500kg. As one would expect from a modern ute, there’s also a spacious tray and an improved, more spacious cab.

In a world of imitation off-roaders and crossover SUVs, the new Amarok is also notable for its real capabilities when

While other offerings in this very competitive sector are hardly spartan, the Amarok is also notable for its level of comfort. There’s a high level of electronic assistance and accessories combined to enhance the safety and enjoyment of a drive in VW’s new ute. The brochure claims that there are no less than 30 programs operating to keep you safe when you’re behind the wheel, but critics describe this full suite as unobtrusive. It’s not noticed unless it’s needed, and it’s quite intuitive. ¢

That’s not just a colloquial way of saying that this impressively appointed 42” mower uses no petrol and emits no carbon. It’s painted vivid green, in a shade that stands out from its peers.

The second impression is all about what’s missing from this 60-volt, electrically powered lawn-mastering machine. You’ll see no engine on the back, just a handy waterproof loading tray for tools, refreshments and other vital outdoor working gear. The deck hangs beneath the sturdy green steel frame with no belts or pulleys, springs or tensioners; instead, the big blades are driven by two electric motors.

Simplicity is the name of the game when it comes to the controls as well; from a comfy padded seat with lots of legroom, the operator can fairly make the Greenworks 60v zero-turn dance. It’s light, due to its lack of a petrol motor, and the battery weight being moved inboard and down, under the ‘captain’s chair’.

Those who have given the electric

mower a spin report two things before anything else; it’s fast, with a turn of speed and torque you wouldn’t expect from a mower. It’s also quiet. Those used to wearing ear protection to stifle the roar of a big V-twin just behind their backs will welcome the relative tranquillity of

hearing nothing but the whirr of the blades and the roll of the wide, soft tyres over the sward.

Greenworks Pro has a range of battery-powered equipment which spans everything from line trimmers and pruners to go-karts and a miniature off-road motorbike, but all utilise the same cutting-edge 60-volt battery, which can be recharged swiftly alone or in pairs. The 42” mower just landed at Godfrey’s Chainsaws and Mowers in Dargaville boasts 10 per cent more power than an equivalent-sized 22hp model, traction control for added safety and stability, and the ability to charge all six of its batteries in just 90 minutes.

This means 2.5 acres of serious cutting every time the machine is charged up, and the ability to ‘shuttle’ those same batteries between the big mower and a range of 75 other tools. When it comes to mowing, this is a game changer, and it’s well worth taking a closer look if you’re in the market for a zero-turn machine in 2024. ¢

A centennial surprise A century of memories

Dargaville resident Annette Ralph was honoured at the Kauri Coast Lifecare by staff, residents and her family at a surprise birthday party in the rest home.

“I don’t know what it is like to be 100 years old, but I know what it feels like now. It makes me appreciate everybody and know that love makes the world go round,” said Annette.

“I am thankful for the wonderful cake and the activity girls for putting this on. This facility is my home. I love everyone here, including the other residents. We always have great times together.”

Annette had a separate party with family and one put on by the rest home surrounded by residents and staff. Manager Trent Turner was there to honour her on the special occasion and made a speech. Her niece Caroline Cornor and nephew Wade Johansson also attended the celebration.

“She came to Dargaville in about 1959 from Wairarapa and began farming in Arapohue. She helped her parents’ farm and has been ever since,” said Caroline.

“My aunty’s life has been full, and she has lived life as a farmer, a wife, an organist and a scout leader. We are all proud of her. She has always been a hospitable person, and that is why we love her.”

The 100-year-old received a birthday card from King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla and the Minister of Seniors, the Honourable Casey Costello. ¢

u

A congratulations card from King Charles and a tribute from Pahi’s extended Sheppard family and friends have saluted “a century of love and care” from matriarch Elva May Heath, who celebrated her 100th birthday last week.

“Mum was born Elva May Leaf at the old Nurse Edith Cavell maternity home in Paparoa on February 21 1924,” said daughter Rachel.

“She married Edward Jeffries Sheppard and there’s Colleen who has three children: Kenneth, known as ‘Honk’, with five boys, Elaine with three offspring, Bill with three and Dianne with two.

“We might lose track of all the greatgrandchildren. Mum had a second marriage after dad died in 1973 to Thomas William Heath — hence, her current name.”

The Sheppard clan moved to Pahi in 1969 when Edward fell ill, and they bought the Pahi Store.

“Mum had the shop for 12 years, which at that stage included the Paparoa to Pahi bread and milk run, and she stocked everything from a needle to an anchor. Accounts were mostly monthly, in handwritten docket books, cash, cheque or weekly ‘on the hook’.”

A weekly trip was made to Whangārei for supplies in a Thames Freighter van. “This sometimes presented with jammed gears that country kids knew how to

straighten and realign the rods to set them right again. After 12 years and no more dependent children to clothe and feed, mum sold the store.

“Celebrating mum’s 100th birthday has been a series of visitors over the past two weeks, extended family getting together for much laughter, music and reminiscing.” ¢

Wild

Free wild food is back at this year’s Northland Field Days after an absence for three years due to the pandemic and Cyclone Gabrielle, and venison treats are on the menu.

Some 40kg of wild venison will be turned out as venison bruschetta with red onion jam and horopito creme fraiche, with about 1,200 portions available at the Northland Regional Council’s marquee at site 11–12.

The creation comes from NorthTec cookery students. NRC Kaipara representative John Blackwell says over the years, the council has transformed a variety of pest animals, plants and even insects into edible treats to spark public interest in its broader work.

“The council was due to give away wallaby curry in 2021 but the event was cancelled due to Covid and again the following year. Then, due to Cyclone Gabrielle last year, we didn’t do our usual food giveaway.”

The venison has been sourced from Blenheim company Premium Game because there’s no local wild venison stock. The NRC, along with the Department of Conservation, is working on a project to eradicate wild deer from Northland, starting with sika deer in Russell Forest, illegally released about 35 years ago.

“Sika deer are more elusive and eat a wider range of plants than other deer species and pose an ongoing threat to Northland’s biodiversity.

“A key focus for field days this year is freshwater, with council staff available to chat to the public about the draft Freshwater Plan Change, which closes at the end of March.”

NRC chair Geoff Crawford, Cr Blackwell, and fellow councillors Jack Craw and Peter-Lucas Jones will be on-site during the field days. ¢

A community hope

u by Amy

The World Day of Prayer organisers invite people to gather in karakia at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 104 Hokianga Road, Dargaville, at 2pm on Friday, March 1.

“Dargaville is a friendly community, and I’ve had the opportunity to meet many people here. I have helped organise it for several years,” said organiser Beth Muir.

“It is a wonderful way for all churches to worship together with a common theme. We don’t have many combined church services, and I always enjoy an opportunity to fellowship together.”

Beth organises the occasion with other believers across town. Each year, various denominations take turns hosting the day. The annual day is a women-led worldwide movement that began in the US in 1887. In New Zealand, the day was first held in 1931. It is now celebrated by more than 170 countries.

“This year’s theme is I Beg You, Bear One Another With Love written by an ecumenical group of Palestinian Christian women. They are inviting the

world to pray for peace, justice and freedom of religion and movement.

“An offering will be taken during the service to be distributed to Christian World Service of Women’s Cooperatives in the West Bank, to the Bible Society’s Child of Bethlehem Project and NZ’s Interchurch Council for Hospital Chaplaincy.”

The service will have bible readings, songs and prayer. A booklet is available online at worlddayofprayer.org.nz. ¢
