Government moves for flood protection u by Andy Bryenton
A year after Cyclone Gabrielle and two concurrent weather bomb events in the mid-north, Northland MP Grant McCallum has announced a new package of flood resilience works, to help safeguard Dargaville against disaster.

As part of a flood resilience plan worth $12.9 million, Dargaville and its surrounds are set to receive more than $1 million of protection from the elements. “Last year’s flooding wreaked havoc across Northland, damaging homes and livelihoods while cutting communities off from the rest of the region and all of us from the rest of the country,” said Mr McCallum. “These flood resilience projects will go a long way to reducing the impact of storms to come and keeping the roads open so we can stay connected. There is still much to be done to build the resilient infrastructure Northland needs, but these projects will make a real difference the next time nature comes knocking.” The projects include remediation of the Awakino River mouth, including desilting, to remove the risk of flooding, of the kind that blocked travel between Dargaville and Whangārei during Cyclone Gabrielle. It has been priced at $350,000. Additionally, flooding risk will be diminished by the expansion of the Beach Road culvert, another piece of water control infrastructure struck by last year’s flooding. A new, better box culvert will cost $400,000. A further $280,000 will be used to bolster the Murphy Bower stopbank protecting Ruawai. This milliondollar investment in Dargaville is matched by a similar expenditure in Whangārei. “The additional $4 million to get these projects across the line, announced by Minister for Emergency Management

and Recovery, Hon Mark Mitchell, is a welcome contribution to Northland’s flood resilience,” McCallum said. “By supporting these projects, the government is making a substantial contribution to Northland’s recovery and resilience. projects are great examples of making changes that build future resilience,” said Mr Mitchell. These four projects are in addition to the nearly $8.9 million allocated to seven projects last year, making the government’s contribution to Northland’s flood resilience total more than $12.9 million. ¢

Whānau Āwhina Plunket Kaipara is offering free car seat checks and installations for parents at the Dargaville Plunket Clinic on Monday, February 12, between 10am–noon.
Dargaville’s first responders will hold an interagency recruitment drive at the Emergency Services Expo 2024 on Saturday, February 10 from 10.30am–2pm at the St John ambulance station, 90 Normanby Street.
“I started the injury prevention role last July. I have two roles in Plunket. This car seat job is clientbased, which I love,” said injury prevention coordinator Amber HallamoreRussell. “It is awesome to be in the community to understand what families need and provide real help to people. Knowing children are as safe as they can be makes me feel good.” The Northland Road Safety Trust funds the service. It also gives Plunket 40 convertible seats and 20 booster seats to donate to struggling families. Referrals are done through the clinical nurses and kaiāwhina. “Some factors that often catch parents out are seat expiry dates, chest clips and seats that require a tether point. The law states that children must be in an appropriate child restraint until they are at least seven years old, and we recommend until they are 148 centimetres tall.” The Dargaville car seat service is available on the second Monday of every second month at the Dargaville Plunket rooms, 29 Hokianga Road. This service is also available in Kaiwaka and Mangawhai. Amber said people can call her for car seat assistance, especially if they are based remotely. For further

Retirement & Lifestyle Ageing possibilities u by Amy Fifita
As people age, they often require more assistance; here are some considerations for navigating the journey into residential care. After the difficult talks are complete, it’s time to decide what type of care is best. There are various options available; not all require a relocation to a rest home. The assistance offered can vary depending on a needs assessment service coordination (NASC). It can help establish what care is relevant and whether it is a temporary or an ongoing issue. Home support allows a person to stay based on where they are. A caregiver then enters the home to provide help with showers, food preparation, medication or whatever is suitable according to the NASC assessment. Respite care is available for families or fulltime caregivers who look
after their loved ones. Temporary lodging can be at a rest home, or friends and family can step in place of the usual carer. That can be done via NASC, and funding is available through the Ministry of Health. Transitioning to a retirement village is a comfortable plan for many. People get to stay at an independent house on the facility grounds while having the reassurance that if there is a fall or medical event, there is a nurse or someone who can help nearby. For many, staying in a retirement home is like a stepping stone. Individuals or couples can stay in their homes until more care is required, and then they can

Retirement & Lifestyle Hearing and health go hand in hand u by Andy Bryenton
Hearing aids have come a long way in recent years, becoming smaller, smarter, more precise and less obtrusive. While these devices have developed into an affordable and convenient solution for the hearing loss often associated with ageing, research published last month by doctors at the University of Southern California’s School of Medicine has revealed an interesting side effect. “We found that adults with hearing loss who regularly used hearing aids had a 24 per cent lower risk of mortality than those who never wore them,” said researcher Dr Janet Choi, an otolaryngologist at the university. The study, headed by Dr Choi, tracked more than 10 years of US federal health survey data spanning 10,000 people. While previous studies had shown a link between untreated hearing loss and reduced life span, they had not touched on the mechanism by which retaining hearing could improve the odds of living to a ripe old age. Now, USC medical researchers have determined that using hearing aids can reduce social isolation, reduce the chances of suffering from depression, and even protect the brain against dementia. In the new study, they found a nearly 25 per cent lower risk of early death
among the hard of hearing who regularly use a hearing aid, as opposed to those who never use them. That difference remained steady even after taking into account other factors like age, ethnicity, income, education and medical history. Researchers speculate this boost to life expectancy could be tied to the benefits improved hearing brings to brain function and mental health. People connected to the world around them, to their friends and relatives, and those engaged in current events, community, and daily life are more likely to have positive mental health outcomes. Hearing makes up a big part of this interaction. It’s not an abstract scientific exercise for Dr Choi. Born with hearing loss in her left ear, the university researcher didn’t find a hearing aid which could help her for three decades. Now, she is devoting her time and skill to assisting others in hearing the whole spectrum of sounds the world offers. The biggest barriers to hearing aid use remain the same in most developed nations, including New Zealand. They are affordability, a good fit, and the perceived social stigma of showing signs of hearing loss or ageing, all factors which can be overcome with the help of an audiologist and your doctor. ¢

ArApohue Show Saturday 10th February 2024 A message from the president u by Andy Bryenton, Northern Wairoa A&P Show president
A warm welcome to all those planning to attend the 132nd year of A&P show action at Arapohue. If you are reading this message, then it’s likely that you’re already part of that storied history, having visited the showgrounds in previous summers. If not, you are about to join a very long roll call of visitors and patrons who have passed through the showground gates over 13 decades, enjoying some Northern Wairoa hospitality. This year, as every year, the show is for the community. The farming and rural sector of west Kaipara has always been the engine room of the local economy, and it’s made up of great people doing great work. Here, for this day, country life is the star of the show, with oldfashioned crafts and timehonoured traditions elevated to
the status of friendly competition. From breeding and raising impressive livestock to the flash of the shears, the aroma of home baking, the colours of freshcut flowers in bloom, and the sight of horses and riders in perfect harmony, there is much to celebrate. Ribbons will be won, and trophies lofted, but by being part of this tradition and celebrating what’s important, everyone wins. This year, there’s an increasing sentiment out there in the public that the skills of tilling a garden, preserving a harvest, being sustainable and cultivating the land are important. While there’s fun to be had tossing the gumboot and pitching in with the tug of war, there’s a lot to learn and a lot to share in the indoor and outdoor sections of the show as well. An increasing number of people, young and old, aspire to master the craft skills their greatgrandparents used every day

In a Claas of its own u by Andy Bryenton
In sports, a hat trick of three wins is a rare and prestigious achievement, but it’s even more so in the world of technical design, where major agricultural manufacturers compete with multi-million-dollar research budgets. The triple crown of accolades for any tractor encompasses three awards. Firstly, the Tractor of the Year award from Europe’s immense Agritechnica. Secondly, the Farm Machine of the Year award was decided by the discerning judges of the German Deutscher Landwirtschaftsverlag council of farming experts. Finally, the USbased AE50 award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. To claim one of these is a careerdefining victory. To claim all three takes a very special machine indeed. This year, all these top awards went to a single tractor, the Claas Xerion 12 series. “We are delighted about the p The Claas Xerion 12 Series has taken home three of the top awards in global farming renowned AE50 Award for our new Xerion 12 series,” said senior vice numerous features that are unique in this machine’s weight eases the impact on president of Product Unit System Tractors performance class.” soil and increases the ability of the Xerion Dr Johannes Weisbrodt. Farmers, especially, have welcomed news of the NBEA’s demise, as input from the rural sector throughout the formative process of the act was widely seen to have been ignored or marginalised. “Farmers have been crying out for reform of our cumbersome resource management laws for decades, but those reforms needed to be done right,” said Federated Farmers spokesperson Mark Hooper. “Unfortunately, Labour’s reform programme completely missed the mark. Instead of offering more certainty and making life easier for New Zealanders, they were going to deliver the exact opposite: complexity, cost and uncertainty.” As the NBEA approached its implementation, fears about additional red tape, regulation and restrictions joined a chorus of opprobrium from farming communities centred on legislative overreach. Groups such as Groundswell listed the RMA replacement alongside provisions for Significant Natural Area mapping, water restrictions and even the tax on new utes in a long tally of grievances. “The previous Labour government claimed the NBA would simplify planning rules, but the act (a 900
page monster) was just as long as the RMA, and it introduced significant new legal complexity and uncertainty,” said Infrastructure and RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop. The fact that Mr Bishop has an entire ministerial portfolio dedicated to replacing the now welloutofdate RMA speaks to the urgency with which the coalition views this work. It’s their intent to get new legislation on the books during a single parliamentary term. The first phase of their plan was the repeal of the NBEA, while retaining fasttrack provisions and ensuring settlements under Te Tiriti are upheld. “In the second phase of the reform, the government will amend the RMA to make it easier to consent new infrastructure, including renewable energy, allow farmers to farm, build more houses, and enable aquaculture and other primary industries,” said Mr Bishop. “The third phase of the reform will replace the RMA with new resource management laws based on the enjoyment of property rights while ensuring good environmental outcomes.” Farming advocacy groups say 2024 is the time to move, fast, on making those changes. An’ he grunted. “One of them lady sherers that was hear left sum shampoo stuff, that’s probly it.” So Sharlene pattid me an’ slipped me a bikkie, an’ sed Boss shood use shampoo more offin. Boss slurped his cuppatees an’ said again that tha whether was rilly hot and it wood be good when footy seesin started in cooler days.
Sharlene said he was probably right, but picked up tha papa I got froma road gate ina morning an’ said she felt sorry for the Orl Blacks. “Looky hear Deah, wen you were playing footy for Northland ya mite have
a couple of games away ina season, but poor old Razer, tha new coach, gonna have his work cut out, ’cos they loaded him ana boys with so many games.” Boss lookt ata papa an’ after a minite he sed: “Its all about munny, more than sport I reckin. Tha game today is all about check books, an’ the players just gotta earn there keep.” Sharlene took the papa back an’ red in her skoolteacher voice: “The huge list of games shows everincreasing commercial pressure points engulfing the national team. There are 14 tests in nine countries and lots of Scott Rbninson’s players are new to the game. Some old experience has been lost from the team. “They are off to play the Springboks in South Africa, then going to play six tests against the world’s top five nations. That will sort the men from the boys and they going to play Fiji in San Diego and that’s purely about money, too. Bigger audience all round.” Boss pored more cupptees and sed all he wanted was fer footy to start. “Big TV ina woolshed, barbecue goin’ and lotsa cold bears ina frige, nice an’ cool ina winter, that will do me Deah.”
Sharlene said: “Ya gotta good point Deah.” As fer me readas, I got no problim too. Snug in me fadge, barbecue leff overs.Outta tha hot sun. What’s not to want? Roll on the cool whether eh? See ya — Billy ¢

FARMING
The call of the shears u by Andy Bryenton
At the forthcoming A&P show in Arapohue and similar events around the country, the spectacle and suspense of competitive shearing is a true crowd-pleaser. What began as an arduous job, completed by hardworking and hard living men in the 1800s, has become a rural sport with a dedicated following, and it’s one of the drawcard attractions of any country show. Like sheepdog trials, which also claim inspiration from New Zealand’s colourful rural history, competitive shearing can trace its roots back to a more roughandready time, when Australian shearing gangs came across the Tasman to meet a growing demand and were viewed as rogues and ruffians by many Kiwi farmers. Rivalry turned the art of shearing into a sport. Large custombuilt shearing sheds became the norm from 1857 onward, when the first one was built in the Amuri district. A workforce of other farm labourers, including drovers, fleece gatherers, sorters and pressers, were present and would watch the shearers battle it out. Kiwi against Australian match ups soon became contests between towns, provinces, and the emerging rock stars of shearing. These men were known as ‘guns’, and the fastest of all earned the title of ‘ringer’

or ‘don’. The slowest was known as the ‘drummer’. Notable gun shearers included Whanganui’s Alec Hutchinson, who was the first ever to shear 100 sheep in a day, and Raihania Rimitiriu, the east coast legend who pushed that tally out to 330 more than once. By the second world war, the Bowen Brothers, Ivan and Godfrey, developed a 55stroke technique that revolutionised competition, a legacy built upon by more modern contenders John and David Fagan. The first shearing contest with official status was held at the 1973 Canterbury A&P Show. It was the 1902 Hawke’s Bay show that created a real buzz around the sport, with the great Raihania beating 35 other top shearers to retain his title. Poverty Bay hosted the Kiwi champs until the late 1940s, with the Royal A&P Show taking up the top spot p Shearing is a major skill that’s vital for farming wool, but it also has a long history as a competitive sport right through until the 1970s. The At this week’s A&P Show in Arapohue, coming along to watch, it’s interesting first Golden Shears was held in Masterton in 1961 and soon became the premiere shearers will pit their skill, speed and to know that this spectacle is not just strength against each other and against a test of endurance and accuracy but a event in New Zealand shearing. the clock, displaying a rare talent that proper homegrown sport with a long and is a true part of rural heritage. If you’re storied past. ¢

24 February 6 2024 KAIPARA LIFESTYLER Example of a typical KMR plan
The Kaipara Moana has unique — and nationally important — values The Kaipara is the largest natural harbour in the Southern Hemisphere, and a place of global significance. As the ‘nursery’ for several fish species, the Kaipara also has unique, national economic value. For example, snapper is New Zealand’s top commercial inshore fishery, creating export revenue of around $35m a year and contributing $69m to the economy & 579 jobs each year. However, sediments from the land are putting both the Kaipara Moana and the fishery at risk.
KMR aims to protect and restore the mauri of the Kaipara Moana. Our long-term aspiration is to halve sediment flows into the harbour.
KMR is now working across the landscape We have recently expanded our focus on waterway protection to include projects on erosion-prone hill country. KMR can now co-fund a range of projects including: KMR invests in programmes to restore wetlands, fence off rivers and streams, plant trees and regenerate forest on erosion-prone land, bringing wider benefits - including thriving rural communities and enhanced connection to local waterways, greater protection for valued species, and resilience to extreme weather. An eighth of the catchment is highly erodible land.
• Fencing to protect waterways • Native planting near waterways • Managing erodible hill country including: • Continuous canopy and permanent forest cover using native species or non-weedy, non-pine exotic species (e.g. eucalypts or redwoods). • Fencing and management to support regeneration of native forest. • Space planting of poplars while maintaining some grazing (subject to poplar supply). What KMR provides: • Free advice — we walk the land with you to discuss your aspirations and project options • Funding — typically, KMR pays up to 50% of the cost of eligible sediment reduction projects • For groups such as catchment groups or marae, we can also help with the cost of engagement, coordination and project management • Planning and support — our Field Advisors prepare a plan to access KMR funding and provide support through the project
Matakohe beef farmer David Byles is one of almost 600 farmers working with KMR
KMR is already working with close to half of the estimated pastoral landowners in the catchment.
