“Our staff are collectively excited to announce that our front counter is reopening so we can serve our community better and be available to them,” said Sergeant Kiley Dalbeth. After a significant drop in public counter volunteers, the front desk was closed at the end of 2022, leaving the team to seek a solution. Many members of the public expressed their dismay, and the police officers were happy to have a resolution for the people of Dargaville. “Public feedback showed disappointment about the Dargaville station front desk closing and not having face-toface service. Now, the community has been heard.

“Our new area commander, Inspector Maria Nordstrom, has a vested interest in this town as she used to police in Dargaville. She found funding so the office could reopen. It is good for us and the community.” Inspector Norstrom was appointed Whangārei and Kaipara area commander in 2023. The good news comes almost a year after the front desk was closed. The Dargaville police anticipate that it will be in mid to late February. There is also concern about recent break-ins at the Dargaville RSA and other small businesses. “If anyone has information regarding the RSA burglary, please contact us on 105. Asset sale to benefit drainage board u by Andy Bryenton

The case of the sale of the Raupō Drainage Board’s former headquarters reached the council table late in 2023, with debate occurring over who should keep the money. In 1989, the Raupō Drainage Board was amalgamated into the Kaipara District Council, with all assets transferred. The property, formerly the board’s central office, is considered surplus to requirements. The house at 16 Ruawai Wharf Road was proposed to be sold. However, the question arose as to whether the KDC or the board should receive the profits from this sale. Initially, it was proposed, in line with standard policy, that the property should be sold and the money used to pay down council debt. Not all councillors agreed. “There are unique circumstances,” said councillor Mark Vincent, moving to amend the motion. “Before there was a KDC and continuing on in the life of the KDC, that building has been funded in terms of its repairs and maintenance by that specifically targeted rate. That makes it out to be separate from any other situation where we have a surplus asset.” Careful wording by Mr Vincent avoided the need to alter the KDC’s usual policy on asset sales, which is to use the proceeds of such sales to pay down debt. With Ash Nayyar as the

seconder, the amendment passed. The council then voted on whether or not to sell the property. This vote was carried in the affirmative, and council CEO Jason Marris and mayor Craig Jepson were delegated the authority to sell the property, allocating the proceeds directly to Raupō Drainage Board works. Rally stages confirmed Joy in companionship u by Andy Bryenton

The Rally of Dargaville Tunatahi is set to roar into action on March 9, with road closures now confirmed for eight stages.

p The Rally of Dargaville Tunatahi is confirmed to span four areas, in both the east and west of Dargaville’s rural countryside

In addition to the four rural, gravel special stages, which will test the skills of 60 top-flight rally teams, there’s also confirmation of a central Dargaville rally base where cars will be repaired and fettled between sections of the big one-day motorsport event. This hub will turn the two car parks to the rear of Victoria Street into a pit area and motor racing carnival, with street food and entertainment and a chance to watch the drivers and their machines. “There are eight stages, across four areas, with each team driving each area twice,” said Rally of Dargaville Tunatahi co-organiser Marty Roestenburg. Mr Roestenburg and his team have personally visited the households of those who live on the rural roads to be

temporarily closed for the event and have received largely positive feedback. The first area spans a loop, including Tokatoka Road, Dreadon Road, Shirley Road and Rehia Road, with the dramatic backdrop of Tokatoka Peak and the rolling farmland of the Northern Wairoa River’s east bank. The second area is also situated to the east of Dargaville and north of Ruawai, spanning Greenhill Road, Access Road and Oparakau Road. The action goes west for the next stage, taking in the section of Waihue Road between the settlement of Mamaranui and Waimata Road. The final section also begins on Waihue Road, sending drivers through the curves and corners of Opanake Road for its entire length, down to Parore West Road. ¢

For decades now, the Dargaville Youth Charitable Trust has been working steadily but unobtrusively for the betterment of young people’s lives. With its origins in a simple plan to rally the community against truancy, the trust has become a Dargaville institution, offering education and mentorship across generations. “It was the people who made this possible,” says Clive Fremlin, one of the founding members of the DYCT. “Those who have contributed so much to the young people of our community through the years, often not asking for any recognition for their efforts.” Clive says that while he has become well known for his roles with the trust, it’s not about him. A team of dedicated locals inspired and empowered the DYCT’s growth and success. “It began with a kuia named Dot O’Flaherty, who called me up to come and talk about truancy. This was a big issue in 1995,” says Clive, who had recently left a three-decade tenure of service in the armed forces. “She believed that there were issues surrounding young people that could be resolved. In my naivety, I said — why p Some of the earliest students to benefit from an adventure outdoor programme run by the Dargaville Youth not mobilise the community.” Charitable Trust, with co-founder Clive Fremlin (furthest left) Takiri Pumipi of Dargaville High School connected with Clive and, in his School and Brian Robinson of Selwyn encouraged and convinced local youth words, “became critical to the success Park School. to get to school and take the educational Soon, Clive’s yellow van became a opportunities he himself found hard to of all of this.” Other early allies were John Houston of Dargaville Primary familiar sight around Dargaville as he access in his young years.

“It was too much work for one person, but it was never just one person. People kept stepping up to help. Rex Salisbury, Jim Te Tuhi and many others helped out. Mrs Pumipi coordinated everything from the high school,” says Clive. The DYCT came into being out of this work, as young people were now embracing education, but school was not a great fit for them all. Clive and his allies decided to try to reach out to these students by offering an outdoor experience. The first trip was down to the North Island’s Central Plateau and involved rafting and horse riding, skiing and hiking. Trips like this one to the South Island and the Central Plateau have continued through the years, allowing hundreds of youngsters to challenge themselves and experience new things. “We did mobilise the community,” says Clive. “People like Piki Walters, Rose Paniora, Dave McLeod and many more were there at the start of the trust.” This was just the beginning, and much more has been achieved in the intervening years, but recognition for those who mobilised when the community needed them is definitely due, says Mr Fremlin. ¢

Tinopai wharf out of action Before the break we made the tough decision to close Tinopai wharf. We get a yearly structural assessment done and the most recent one showed major deterioration in the last 12 months, much more than we were expecting. The wharf is unsafe for the public to use – it has quite a few issues, including piles damaged by worms and decay, heavily corroded fixtures, and damage to both the wharf decking and split bearers. We’ve put up fencing and signage and we need your help to remind your friends and neighbours the wharf is unsafe and off limits at the moment. We are working on the options to get the wharf fixed up and back open, but will take some time as the repairs needed are major and require funding. We are planning for this through our next work programme (as part of the Long Term Plan 2024/2027) and will keep you updated.

Scouting’s biggest adventure

u by Andy Bryenton

Young Dargaville scouts headed out to the largest event in their organisation’s calendar during the school holiday season, attending the three-yearly Jamboree to take part in a range of outdoor challenges. “There were so many bases for the kids to try out different skills; it was amazing. They are all probably still chirping with the excitement of it now,” says Janneke Gilligan. Janneke helped host the event with a small army of other Scouting leaders from around New Zealand. The jamboree took place from the last days of 2023 and into the first of 2024. It saw hundreds of youngsters descend on Mystery Creek, Hamilton, for the 23rd gathering of New Zealand’s Scouts. Activities included archery, kayaking, a wheels track, obstacles and even operating excavators. Traditional Scouting

fixtures such as the campfire, creative songs and sketches, and a massive closing ceremony made the experience memorable for the First Dargaville Scouts group attendees. “First Dargaville Scouts joined with Hora Hora, Shackleton and Te Kamo Scouts to form the Taniwhā Country Troop,” said leader Johnnita Houghton. “We would love to thank our sponsors, volunteers, families and leaders, Dargaville High School, the Hughes Trust, the Oxford Sports Trust, Te Kamo, Hora Hora and Shackleton Scouts and the Jamboree Inclusion

CALL THE RIGHT TEAM Lessons from the ultimate team u by Andy Bryenton

The time when the right team was most urgently needed may have been the latter days of 1940 when the second world war was going badly for Britain. The lessons learned as its armed forces broke with tradition to create a highly successful unit of combat soldiers transferred over into the peacetime

world of business and enterprise surprisingly well. To form the first unit of commandos, the British high command did away with tiny increments of rank and the traditional rigid structure. Officers were expected to train hard alongside enlisted men. Rather than relying on obedience to orders, smart thinking, adaptability and a cool head in a crisis were prized. Nobody specialised. All must learn a huge range of mental and physical skills. Most importantly, disharmony and discord were reasons to be RTU (returned to unit), as the whole team had to work with positivity and closeness in the most dire conditions. ‘The commando values are excellence, integrity, self-discipline and humility. The commando spirit exemplified courage, determination, unselfishness and cheerfulness’. So reads the handbook of the Royal Marines, which carries on the legacy of those second world war fighters today. In short, it wasn’t enough to be a tough individual. Many of those legendary first commandos were of slight build

and humble backgrounds, but they were willing, smart and cooperative. Even the word commando comes from the Boer War practice of friends and neighbours arming themselves to fight using bushcraft and cunning rather than force of numbers. These small bands of fighters were self-commanding, hence the name given to their mobile, flexible and tenacious units. While the modern professional or tradesperson isn’t called upon p When it comes to building a team to tackle any task, the lessons learned by the armed forces in creating the first to parachute in behind enemy commandos are still very relevant, 80 years on lines, there is a clear parallel You’ll see those qualities in successful between the qualities which made those first commando soldiers highly businesses all around you. Leaders who effective and the kind of team that can pitch in with their staff, openness and get the job done in the office or on the honesty about forward planning, trust and respect that’s clearly been earned construction site. While it’s often just a bit of humour through positive action, and that unselfish to equate a day’s work to the battlefield, and cheerful attitude can turn even a having a team who work well together, can daunting task into an easy one. If you adapt, and can work to fulfil an end goal see those qualities in a company, you without needing micro-management and can trust that they will do well for you as their customer. ¢ formulaic orders is always a bonus.

CALL THE RIGHT TEAM Team sports with a twist u by Andy Bryenton

It’s just human nature to team up and work together with others, so much so that people from nearly every era and nation have made up new ways to band together and compete as a group. Polo seems to be the first-ever team sport. There’s evidence that this equestrian game originated in Persia 500 years before the Roman Empire made it onto the scene. Games were held to train the Persian king’s cavalry, with more than 100 players on each side, and the ‘ball’ was the entire hide of a goat. Of course, team sports have since become a worldwide sensation, with variants of football dominating the ranks of professional clubs. However, there are other team sports which demand a little more of their players. Bo-Taoshi is one such example. It’s a traditional Japanese sport where teams of 150 attack and defend a pair of huge upright logs, on which a sort of ‘goalkeeper’ has to balance. It’s only the weight of the defenders keeping the log upright, and the aim is to topple the goalie and the pole. Matches last only two minutes, but aside from punching and kicking, there are not many rules to stop the madness.

The newest of all team sports comes from the world of fantasy and film. Despite the fact that Quidditch is a fictional sport invented for JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series, it’s been adapted into a real game for teams of players. They compete to throw a large ball through hoops on a field, which sounds normal enough. However, they must also play the entire match while pretending to ride a wizard’s flying broomstick. The US beat Germany to win last year’s world cup. Still not odd enough for you? Then, gather a team of three or more and get ready to compete in extreme ironing. Teams face off to try to iron and press as many formal shirts as they can within the time limit. Two hold the board; one wields the iron, and the other keeps control of the shirts. What makes it extreme? The fact that the game is played by skydivers in free-fall. No matter what sport your team plays, an inspiring name can add to its fame

p Exponents of extreme ironing in free fall — team sports are part of a basic human desire to band together and compete for fun and glory

or notoriety. New Zealand’s All Blacks are unmistakable, but what about the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes, the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Santa Cruz University Banana Slugs, or the best baseball team

name in the US, the Long Beach Dirtbags. Yes, they are all real, and no, your own team should not try to find a name that’s even worse. ¢

CALL THE RIGHT TEAM Kick the ‘cowboys’ to the kerb u by Andy Bryenton

It’s common sense to hire a qualified tradesperson instead of a dodgy ‘cowboy’, but if the temptation is there, please consider these three big reasons to go with a credential-carrying professional. It could invalidate your insurance Hiring unqualified tradespeople might seem like an inexpensive option, but in the long run, it can prove very costly. For example, the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board has warned that there’s a high risk to one’s health and safety if sanitary plumbing work is handled by those who don’t know how. However, there’s worse news from the Insurance Council of New Zealand, which says that ‘the use of unregistered and unqualified persons to do sanitary plumbing, gasfitting or drainage work on an insured property may invalidate the property’s insurance cover in the event of a loss resulting from the work undertaken’. If there’s a problem with your plumbing, flooding and water damage could mean serious repair bills. Without insurance, those bills would have to come entirely out of your pocket. In some cases, it’s just plain illegal If the work you’re paying an unqualified tradesperson to do involves water, gas, electricity or major structural parts of the home, then it’s not just a bad move — it’s

illegal. What’s more, if it’s proven that a person hired a ‘cowboy’ knowing that they were not the genuine article, they could be in trouble alongside the fraudulent tradie. Additionally, qualified tradespeople keep up to date with the rules and regulations of the building code and their own trade’s latest guidelines. Someone out of the loop may not complete your work to the standard that’s legally required. It could make selling your home difficult Real estate agents want to do their best for both the buyer and seller, and that means doing the due diligence on the property. If there have been major renovations, extensions or electrical and plumbing works undertaken, they’ll want to know if they have been done right when it comes time to sell your home. Buyers will ask, and they will expect a straight answer, often with paperwork to back it up. A cheap repair now could cost thousands later, if it means a sale falls through or the buyer insists on a big discount, as they will have to have the job redone by professionals. ¢

p Pinching pennies by hiring unqualified tradespeople could end up costing big dollars further down the track, as many homeowners have found, to their dismay

CALL THE RIGHT TEAM Not today, cowboy u by Amy Fifita

When employing a builder to work on a structure, ensure that all of the correct boxes have been ticked by the person being employed. Sometimes, even the brightest are duped by those from the cowboy industry. Wasted money, dodgy jobs, calling in a real professional to amend a shoddy job or worse, having to start again. Avoid these like the knock-off professionals avoid qualifications. Those people either think they know what they’re doing or take the funds and galavant into a scammer’s sunset. There are many stories of people being taken advantage of. Knowing rights and what questions to ask when hiring someone makes a significant difference in being tricked or having an above-board job done. Think of it as looking at someone’s curriculum vitae. Having a clear idea of what the project is. Researching and obtaining quotes will provide a brief idea of the costs. Get more than one quote to gauge how much it will cost. One potential mistake is choosing a significantly lower price because sometimes you get what you pay for. Beware of under-the-table jobs. While

they may be cheaper, it does not legally oblige the person in question to be liable for the work. People have the right to a disclosure from any business customers trade with, and for certain services, contracts will help both parties have clarity. Plan for consistency and give so everyone involved knows what needs to happen. In the building industry, any work costing more than $30,000 requires a mandatory contract. The builder is responsible for giving the client a checklist to inform them where accountabilities lie. A builder’s disclosure will typically include types of insurance, references, qualifications, years of experience, tribunal and disciplinary matters and workers involved in the process. Why would someone hide this information? Know what is covered by the client and the builder, and understand how long they are liable after the job, whether repairing a mistake or doing maintenance. Take time to decide the best person for the job. ¢
