Legal advice for and against the Kaipara District Council’s climate change policymaking has been taken into account as elected members were urged to readdress its decision on the matter. At September’s council meeting, deputy mayor Jonathan Larsen tabled a notice of motion to request chief executive Jason Marris to cancel the KDC’s emission accounting contract and stop the development of a Kaipara climate policy. He contended these measures had no tangible benefit for the ratepayer, and monies allocated to them would be better spent on practical works. Rock for recovery effort

Cinema survives through generosity

p When news came that the Dargaville Town Hall annexe, the entrance to the Anzac cinema, had been badly damaged and needed to be demolished, members of the cinema trust were determined that it would survive. Thanks to the generosity of the Dargaville Arts Association, who agreed to loan their Muddy Waters Gallery space to the cause, the cinema continues to entertain as a big asset for Dargaville.

Bike adventures launched p The community came together to raise money for Cyclone Gabrielle’s victims, many of whom still face hardships and massive clean-up bills months after the storm. A concert and fundraising event saw crowds gather at Paparoa War Memorial Hall to enjoy supper and live entertainment from various local entertainers, including the young rock band Socially Awkward, pictured.

THERE IS A FULL TIME PRIVATE CLINIC IN WHANGAREI, RUN BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH PROBLEMS Such as troublesome bleeding; menopause concerns; abnormal smears; pelvic pain; pain or irritation ‘down there’; fertility issues; non–surgery options for prolapse and bladder problems. Many of the common problems can be treated with simple minor procedures done either at the clinic or at Kensington Hospital. The emphasis at the clinic is on making sure women have as much information as possible about their own health on which to base their decisions as to the type of treatment that is best for them. Dr. Rachel Moss, the specialist gynaecologist, can see you to make a thorough gynaecological assessment and discuss options for treatment. A GP referral can be helpful but is not essential.

A community rallies

Gabrielle strikes

5

p Monday, February 13, saw Cyclone Gabrielle strike Kaipara with wild winds and flooding, downed trees and damage to homes and businesses. Emergency services coordinated together to face the challenge, earning praise from the public, the mayor and even the prime minister.

The legacy of Sir Edmund Hillary

p Ruawai College students visited the Hillary Outdoors Education Centre in Tongariro last August to explore volcanic rockfields and other exciting outdoor activities.

Plan ahead and keep safe working around electricity

p Cyclone Gabrielle tested the resilience of Kaipara, but the local community was stronger than any natural disaster. The recovery effort was typified by neighbours helping neighbours, towns helping towns, and everyone pitching in to assist. A mayoral relief fund would eventually disburse $500,000 in free aid to those affected, all of it donated.

Overhead Power Lines

Underground Power or Fibre Cables

It’s important to stay alert and always be aware of overhead lines when working near them. Look up and look out for overhead power lines whenever you are handling tall objects like ladders, aerials or scaffolding.

It’s important to know where power or fibre cables are before you dig. This includes ramming of fence or sign posts. Plan ahead and visit www.beforeudig.co.nz.

If you or something you are holding touches an overhead line there’s a real risk of electrocution, explosion, flashover or fire. Do not go within 4 metres of power lines without a Close Approach Consent.

You cannot dig or excavate within 5 metres of our power poles without a Close Approach Consent. Northpower offer a free service to locate underground cables and ducts. Contact us before you begin digging or excavating.

Working within 4 metres of any electricity equipment? Contact us to arrange a Safety Disconnect or a Close Approach Consent.

Digging Underground? Plan ahead and visit beforeudig.co.nz. Need advice? Call us on 0800 66 78 47.

Students lead the way in restoration

National tournament dreams realised

p After placing third in the Northland inter-school events, the Ōtamatea High School basketball team faced other New Zealand teams at the national championships last August.

A charitable challenge

p Kaipara Moana Remediation’s tree planting project to clean up waterways on the Kaipara Harbour catchment reached its one-million tree milestone, with many Kaipara schools helping with labour.

p Joesephine Nathan was once again instrumental in hosting an excellent Lighthouse Challenge day at Poutō, with a donation raised for the Cancer Society in Northland. Nigel Blakeborough was 2023’s winner, but the race kicks off again on January 27 2024; this could be your year.

High honour for local grower

p The biggest outdoor event in the north drew in massive crowds as the Northland Field Days returned, bigger and better after the break forced by Covid-19. Farming, food, fun and a fairground atmosphere prevailed as the event unfolded over three days, and now it’s nearly time for the gates to open for 2024.

Scouts enjoy lakes adventure

p Mid-March saw scouts from as far afield as Auckland set up camp at Kai Iwi Lakes, participating in a series of nautical challenges. After a summer of wind and rain, the weekend was crisp but sunny for the scouts, who rowed and sailed in friendly competition, appreciating the facilities and surroundings of Pine Beach.
