River road works

Dargaville enjoys Polkadot fun! The Polkadots are New Zealand’s female version of the Wiggles and the colourful quartet were in Dargaville recently and proved to be a big hit with the local children. Mum, Sarah Midgley, said Dargaville Town Hall was filled to capacity. “The Polkadots loved the audiences’ enthusiasm and involvement during the show

and they hope to be back again in the near future.” Carly, Dionne, Sarah and Dez, who make up the Polkadots, are a group of energetic young mothers who share a love of dance and music. They are committed to providing enjoyable and effective learning programmes and materials for preschoolers.

Transfield have just completed maintenance works on the stopbank by Dargaville’s River Road on Council’s behalf. The river had scoured out part of the top of the bank. Transfield are repairing the damage and placing rocks along the top of the stopbank to prevent further scouring. The cost of this work is fully funded by a targeted rate on properties in the Dargaville Stormwater District, as it is this wall that protects parts of Dargaville from disappearing under water on particularly high tides.

Gaining inspiration in difficult times is the key to regeneration, success and fulfilment. ‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill was written at the time of the great depression in 1937 when business confidence was at an all time low. The book was an instant success selling 20 million copies and spawning a whole new category of ‘self help’ books. Most importantly, ‘Think and Grow Rich’ helped inspire great numbers of people achieve great success despite the dire state of the economy at the time. It doesn’t matter where you get inspiration, as long as you get it. Today’s economy is tough and it is the people who get inspired now that will be leading Northland in the future. If you would like to get your business into top gear then the Northland Business Excellence Awards could be just what you need for inspiration.

$3,000 closer

Dargaville women, Lisa Bowman, travelled to the National Field Days with her chainsaw and came home a winner

If anyone needs proof that ‘girls can do anything’, Dargaville woman, Lisa Bowman, can often be found wielding a chainsaw on a practise ground off Dargaville’s Liverpool Street, as she trains to notch up titles in logging skills competitions. Her most recent success was winning first prize in the Ladies Chainsaw Race at the National Field Days at Mystery Creek. “The event involves cutting three slices, or biscuits, off a log lying in a trestle. There is a cash prize but no medal or anything like that,” said Lisa. “I started entering chainsawing contests just three years ago.” In her completely different everyday life, Lisa

has a job in the office of Northland Regional Council in Dargaville. Ask her how much practise goes into her chainsawing and Lisa laughs: “Not enough. Paniora Logging has set up a training place on a borrowed area in Liverpool Street and we practise on the grass in there. And a man from Auckland has given me a morning’s training on how to use a chainsaw. Paniora Logging did really well at the Field Days too. They won the fastest time on the bar fit.” Husband Karl formerly worked in the bush, but Lisa says he now concentrates on training and as an assessor. “His own team, Cutters Club Gold took a fourth place at the Field Days and he raced as a ‘fill in’ for a Tokoroa team on the day.”

Mr James Foster of Pono Lodge presents Debbie Evans, chief executive of the Kaipara Community Health Trust, with a $3,000 cheque towards the purchase of a Community Auto Pulse Machine for use at the Dargaville Hospital. Fundraising initiatives, including raffles and personal donations, is currently underway and together with this donation, the fund is nearly half way to reaching the total $18,000 that is required.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

A house of memories by Paul Campbell There are very few history books about Northland and the Kaipara in which the pioneer missionary, Reverend William Gittos does not appear. He arrived in New Zealand as a child and grew up fluent in Maori and was an arbiter of note between various tribes and the early settlers of the latter half of the 19th century. Now in the 21st century, he has had further recognition. His former home overlooking the Otamatea has just been registered as a category II historic place by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. The Gittos House was built in about 1866 as the Wesleyan mission house on land given to the Wesleyans by Rev. Hone Waiti Hikitanga, a chief of Te Uri o Hau. William Gittos, his wife Marianne and their seven children lived here from 1866 until the mission closed and the family moved to Auckland. The house has had a varied and often colourful history. “By March 1868, Gittos and his family were well established in their home, which welcomed visitors including a Daily Southern Cross reporter covering a sitting of the Native Land Court. The house also served as a meeting place for his Pakeha congregation, says the Historic Places Trust's Northland Manager, Stuart Park.

The house has had a varied and often colourful history

Famously less welcome was Frederick Fairburn, a former fiancĂŠ of Gittos’ second daughter Esther. “In April 1882, while William Gittos was away from the property, Fairburn and a male friend were driven off by Mrs Gittos wielding a horse whip assisted by a servant,â€? says Mr Park. “It seems that Fairburn had been courting a young lady in Auckland at the same time he was seeing Esther, and Esther had broken off the engagement.â€? After serving as a mission, it became the site of more unusual ventures. Next on the scene was a Victor Nissen, who is credited with being an innovator away ahead of his time, importing the first ostriches to be farmed in the North Island. They were farmed for their fashionable feathers. He must have had plenty of money as tabulating his costs then, in today's terms, adds up to an astonishing $2 million. But it seems ill-spent as many birds died en route from South Africa and the survivors’ arrival coincided with the worst drought in living memory in the Kaipara, lasting through the entire first half of 1887.

“Next to occupy Gittos House was a Mr Simich who established the Zealandia Canning Company of Otamatea on site, and built a long wharf made from manuka piles on the beach below the house, says Mr Park. “Simich processed mullet and Zealandia Canning won a prize at the 1896-7 Auckland Exhibition. Then along came wine growing pioneer W.H. Jackman who apparently installed Billy Paikea as caretaker but did not take up residence himself. In 1911, he sold the house to George Forester Linnell, and the former fish cannery was converted into a wool shed and the wharf was used to ship the wool. Then, the roads and rail connected Kaipara to Auckland so the shipping trade gradually disappeared and the house has remained in the Linnell family, who have farmed the Rangiora property continuously for a century. Now the classification under the Historic Places Trust sees the Gittos House preserved, for the generations to come.

Farming country jewels What started out as a hobby for two farmers’ wives has turned into a thriving small upmarket costume jewellery business for neighbours and best friends, Erin Gunson and Leesa Babe. “Leesa and I have always been crafty people and when Leesa went away on a trip to Tauranga she came across a bead shop, had a lesson with the lady and came home and introduced me to jewellery making. We are not the type of people that do things half heartedly so we jumped on in, said Erin. “With our busy lifestyles, we try to get together as often as we can to create our jewellery, working around our families. “We started making jewellery for ourselves

but ended up with a bit much, so now we are available for jewellery parties and also at the Waipu Boutique markets which are on the second Sunday of every month, and the Whangarei Night Market, held once a month at the old library once a month. Country Jewels jewellery is trendy and funky, with some finer pieces, and is good quality and affordable upmarket costume jewellery with prices ranging from $10.00 to $45.00. The jewellery is made from imported glass, wood, resin and acrylic beads. To organise a jewellery party and book a date contact Erin Finlayson at Country Jewels, phone 09 432 2074.

Real estate awards Roper and Jones First National have had a winning streak in the franchise awards taking home the Top Rural Office of The Year title as well as a string of individual awards. These included Michelle Tomlinson — Sapphire Award, Rachael De Vries and Rhoda Morrison — Ruby Award. Top rural sales to Rhoda Morrison, a Highly Commended for Public Relations/Media content to Jill Wilson and John Powell, as well as a Long Service award to Kerry Cyprian. Jill Wilson says there are many ways people can enhance their buying and selling of real estate. “Avoid over-pricing your property. Overpricing a property is possibly the most costly mistake a seller can make, she says.

“Have your home looking its best. If there are minor jobs to do, make sure they are done before your property is put on the market. Improving the appearance of bathrooms and kitchens, and landscaping, can add value to your property. Marketing includes how your property is presented, how it is priced, and how it is promoted and advertised. “Ensure your property can be easily found on the Internet and ensure the photographs are of a good quality. “Apart from your property, your biggest asset is your sales consultant. He or she should have a good knowledge of the market in your area. And when is the best time to sell? There are always buyers looking for well-presented, wellpriced properties.

Wonky and Willbee Kaipara kids came out in force to see Craig Smith perform at Dargaville Town Hall last Tuesday, 19 July.

Courtesy of Archives, Dargaville Museum Extracts from the North Auckland Times, Dargaville . . .

The singer, songwriter and author of Wonky Donkey was invited to perform by the Dargaville Town Library, as a special treat for the school holidays. “His books are so popular,” says library manager, Paula Guy-Stuve. “He was going to sign his books but they were all out on loan!” Craig Smith got his break in 2008 when ‘The Wonky Donkey Song’ was voted Children’s Song of the Year by APRANZ. Following this, the song was given the go-ahead by Scholastics to be turned into a children’s book and another song, Willbee the Bumblebee, was given the same honour. In 2009, Craig released children’s album, Not Just for Kids, using a recycled paper case and corn starch trays — even the printing ink was environmentally friendly. Later that year, Wonky Donkey was voted into the semi-finals of the ISC, which is the largest international song competition in the world. Paula was very impressed by the performance on Tuesday and the level of support: “It was really cool to see such a great turnout on Tuesday and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. “The kids adore him — but the parents were getting into it too.”

he Tennis Club opened the season on Saturday afternoon. A fair number of players and visitors turned up at the courts and a good time was spent by all. The ladies provided afternoon tea that was much appreciated. In the evening a social was held in the hall. About thirty couples were present and all apparently had a good time. Every credit is due to Club secretary Archie Metcalfe, under whose able management everything was carried to a successful issue.

HUKATERE NOTES.

r. C. Hansen met with a painful accident the other day while going from Hukatere to Matakohe. He was riding a young horse which is a timid animal on the roads, when one of Messrs G. and R. Coates’ Hereford bulls jumped out of a bush of scrub. The horse took fright and jumped from under Mr. Hansen who came down on his face on the road. Mr. Martin came along and found Mr. Hansen lying on the roadside and he was taken to Mr. Coates’ house. He was attended to by Mr. Rodney Coates and others.

TO THE RESIDENTS OF NORTHERN WAIROA.

hile thanking the public for the generous support accorded us during our many visits to this district in connection with Acetylene Lighting, we beg to intimate that we have opened business here as: Plumbers, Sheet Metal workers and Acetylene Gas engineers. John Hale and Company. (next to Central Hotel).

This Town in 2011 A wander around Dargaville with Brian Eastwood Take a look up on Harding Park and you will see that the heather is flowering red, marking the approximate half way point of the winter and always a bright note in our wet season. In the past it was also the signal for locals that the toheroa were coming to their best in the August, September, October months. There has been no open season since 1981. Forty years ago the season lasted from March to October, but in later years for a short time, there was even the pandemonium of two-day seasons. Now days you need a permit to dig toheroa, but you will only get that for a special occasion, such as a family get together or a reunion.

Wondering what to do with the kids on the wet days these school holidays? Try a trip up to the Dargaville Museum and have them take part in one of the quizzes based on the heaps of interesting things on display. Kids are free and Mum and Dad get a free cup of coffee with every entry ticket. Come to think of it, it would keep the young ones happily amused even on a dry day. And they’ll be learning stuff as they go around. No need to book, just turn up anytime on the week-days between 9am and 4pm.

Men who made the Northern Wairoa

Can’t read the paper online because your broadband is slow and unreliable?

by Brian Eastwood If you head down the road to Te Kopuru from Dargaville, you can still see one of the buildings that are a reminder of our Northern Wairoa story. Back off the flats at Aoroa stands the original homestead of well known early settlers, the Harding family. Even now in good order, it was built for them in 1893 by a former Wellington man, Charles Henry Mansill. Mansill was thirty-two, a qualified carpenter and an accomplished cricketer when he came to Northern Wairoa in 1891. Born in Wellington in 1859 he served his time as a builder before spending time in Australia and later going into business on his own account. He had gone into partnership with his friend and cricketing team mate J. W. Brown when they decided to buy a block of 3,147 acres in Northern Wairoa from Dargaville businessman Edwin Mitchelson. They intended to go sheep farming. It was an unusual move for a builder and his partner Brown, who was a solicitor and Chief Clerk in the Wellington Stamp Department. Keen sportsmen, they both played cricket for Wellington at the Basin Reserve in a game against Australia in 1881, Nelson in 1883 and Australia again in 1886/87. The two friends were also keen members of Wellington’s Athletic Football Club. After letting his three rental properties in Wellington, Mansill was the first to come north to start off their farming venture, with Brown arriving three weeks later. Ill health bothered Mansill for a while in 1909 but on the advice of his doctor, a stint in Rotorua cured him. The electoral roll of 1911 puts him in Aranga but still lists him as a builder. He had carried on building and is noted as builder of the Downey homestead.

Mansill became a true local when he married Elizabeth Mary, the daughter of Aratapu mill manager Mr. H. E. Stehr. They brought up two sons. An unsuccessful tender in 1902 saw him missing out on the Te Kopuru Hospital job to Tom Heron, coming in second with a bid of £1,737. But Mangawhare Hall and Aoroa School were among the many other buildings that are credited to him. He entered wholeheartedly into community activities, not surprisingly taking on the job of secretary of Mangawhare Cricket Club. He became a member of the Order of Oddfellows Lodge and was a foundation member of Dargaville Club in 1903. Charles Henry Mansill lived in Mangawhare for most of his days in Northern Wairoa but the ex-Wellington man died in Auckland’s Cornwall Hospital in 1945. He was 86 years old.

That polar rodent strikes

by Our Motoring Correspondent

You have to hand it to weatherman Jim Hickey with his ‘polar rodent’ description of the weather. Drivers in many parts of the country this week have had the wintry rat snapping at their wheels with the first real blast of winter sweeping up from the deep south.

You are not going to stop in a hurry, if at all, until you hit something solid. So keep well back from the car in front and adjust your speed. Controlling the fuel bill

by Our Motoring Correspondent

the power plant to work harder and your car becomes less fuelefficient. Replacing a clogged air filter could improve your mileage by as much as 10 percent. Use the right oil. You can improve your car’s mileage by up to two percent and this all adds up. So it pays to take care of maintenance. And with winter still with us, take care of a few other things. Visibility is vital in bad weather. Clean windows, headlights and effective wiper blades are a safety must.

Check and ensure your washer additive levels are filled. Ensure your wiper blade rubbers are clearing water effectively. Damp weather can also put more stress on electrical systems. And remember too, heavy rain means localised flooding sometimes and water is a lubricant, so if you drive through a flooded area and submerge your wheels, your brakes won’t work effectively. Using them a few times once you’re out of that water will help to dry the discs again. In the end, don’t skimp on maintenance. Be serious about car care as performance depends on it. A car is designed to run a certain way. If you neglect it, it won’t be as efficient.

What goes up must come down. Well, if we are talking about petrol and diesel prices, I don’t think so! But while we are being hit in the wallet each time we get behind the wheel, there are ways to minimise the shock in car care and maintenance. For a start though — does you vehicle really need high octane, more expensive petrol. Probably not. Lower octane use will save you many dollars. And check you petrol — or diesel cap, as a loose fitting cap means evaporation. If you have the opportunity, use a garage to park your vehicle. This cuts temperature extremes, and use of the heater, demister, or aircon unit — and that cuts fuel use. Watch your tyre pressure too. Under-inflated tyres wear down more quickly and they also lower your car’s mileage per litre — apart from being vital to car safety on the road. Tyres that have low pressure offer more resistance so the engine is going to work harder and use up to 15 percent more fuel. Driving on under-inflated tyres will also reduce their life by up to 15 percent. Check your tyre pressure once a month. Buy a digital gauge and keep it in your glove box and try to check pressures when they are cold after standing overnight. Keep your engine in tune. Fixing a car that is out of tune or has failed an emissions test can boost fuel use by up to four per cent. It’s a good idea to coincide you car service with your warrant, and at that time air filters and oil gets changed. Clogged engine air filters cause

Frank Nola — gentleman and mentor The recent death of well-known Dargaville man Frank Nola has not only been a sad loss for his family, but his wide knowledge of the history of Kaipara and Northern Wairoa has also been lost to this district. Born in Valley Road in 1920, he was the son of immigrants Frane and Jako Nola. That street we now know as Station Road has always been Frank’s home. The Nola family has been involved with the winemaking industry here since 1911 and Frank took over the business from his father. In boyhood days Frank was a boy scout and the oldest ex-member present at a recent Dargaville scouting reunion. A big man topping six feet four, Frank joined the territorial army before going into the regular army in 1940 after the outbreak of war. He was twenty years of age and served for the next two years. “He was a real gentleman and a mentor for us and for others too,” says his son Frank Nola jnr. “With no health

He is survived by wife Alma and two sons, Frank jnr, Michael and their families.

Whats New... Its Strawberry Season! Growing strawberries is fun, easy, and yummy! They taste better home-grown, and are very fast growing. If you have young children, get them started into gardening by giving them a strawberry plant to grow. Most people are familiar with planting them in the garden. However, they will grow successfully in an upright strawberry planter with pouches, or in a terracotta tower, or in a hanging basket, or even hydroponically. The growing part is easy, with just a few key points. Strawberries need rich well-drained soil in a sunny spot. You could prepare your soil before planting by adding compost, sheep pellets and blood and bone. Or you could do it the easy way by planting them in Strawberry Mix - a potting mix specifically formulated for strawberries. Heap the soil up to provide good drainage. Feed them generously with strawberry food when you plant them, and keep them well watered. Strawberries are generally disease-free when grown in full sun and good air circulation. A simple copper spray will keep fungus and mildews at bay. Now some cleaver tips. Spread pea- or barley-straw or mulch around the base of the plant. This keeps the soil warm, the crawling bugs at bay, and the fruit cleaner! Finally, jealously guard your fruit the minute it turns red, because if you don’t the birds will have a feast! Bird netting is cheap and easy to manage. Black netting tends to be less obvious in the garden. Keep your plants after the season. Strawberries are ground-hugging and spread into a clump 50–100cm wide. Each clump sends out long thin runners (or stems) that take root to form a new plant. In my experience the second year produces sweeter fruit in greater numbers! We are trying for third year of fruit this year, but ultimately plants will become underproductive and need replacing. Every year we sell hundreds of strawberry plants in a number of varieties. Currently we have bare-root plants in clumps of 10, and new plants 4-cell punnets. Shortly we will carry single-potted plants – the most popular way to buy because the plants are mature and ready to fruit. Perhaps the best thing to be said about strawberries is their versatility as a fruit. They are great to eat fresh off the plant, but they can also be frozen, made into preserves, as well as dried and used in such things as cereal bars. You can put strawberries into dairy products like ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies, and yogurts. Who hasn’t had strawberries and cream for dessert (even if you haven’t been to Wimbledon!). What’s not to love about strawberries!
