Kauri Museum in award finals by Paul Campbell

There was celebration in the air at the weekend as the iconic Kaipara attraction opened its doors to free public access for its annual Settler’s Day

The museum is one of two finalists in the tourism category of the 2011 Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards. Word of the selection circulated among staff and museum Friends and Volunteers, resplendent in period costumes, as along with visitors they enjoyed access to exhibits, wide-ranging interactive pioneer activities, and live demonstrations of vintage kauri logging equipment and machinery. “It is a thrill for us all, and it reflects great credit on the staff, our Friends and Volunteers groups, but also on the community as a whole,” said museum CEO, Bet Nelley. “It’s sort of fitting that it coincides with our commemoration of Settlers Day as well. “An important factor of these awards is that the work everyone has put into the application process stands everyone connected to the museum in good stead for the future — in understanding our aims and ambitions going forward.” The winners of all of the categories will be announced at the 2011 Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards presentation and gala dinner in Whangarei on October 28. Two other Kaipara businesses are finalists in other categories of the awards — Silver Fern Farms in Dargaville, and Mangawhai Heads 106.4 FM. All finalists are considered for the Northland Regional Council

New early childhood centre for Kaiwaka We’ve never been more aware than we are today of the unique learning experiences and abilities which early childhood brings. It’s a time of growth and development during which kids need a safe but challenging environment — interaction, care, attention and fun brought together. That’s just what Graeme and Patricia Walker and John and Natasha Lee have created at Small Poppies, a purpose built early childcare education centre in Ruakaka, Northland. With small children of their own they aimed to create a ‘home away from home’, and their success has led to great demand from the parents of Northland — so much so that Small Poppies is now coming to Kaiwaka with a brand new centre under construction right now. It’s an exciting move for the innovative and well loved company — recipients of a 2010

Northland Business Excellence Award, and one which sees a whole new group of children and parents welcomed into the Small poppies ‘family’. Enrolments are now open for your child to join Small Poppies, where they will benefit from truly exceptional early childhood education and care, including fun and challenging activities, healthy meals and a head start on school through the ‘Tall Poppies’ transition to school programme. With specially designed facilities catering to children from zero to school age, Small Poppies provides a blend of care, education and fun that helps kids grow up smart, healthy and happy. Give them a call today if you’re in the Kaiwaka area and give your kids a head start with Small Poppies!

Performers taking part in the BNZ Talent Quest gather at the Dargaville Town Hall for their first rehearsal. The talent quest is a party for the town, marking the BNZ’s 150th anniversary and, considering the amount of local talent, it is set to be a night of tough competition. The BNZ Talent Quest is on October 21. For further info contact Terangi or Caleb on 09 439 8543 or 021 133 3232.

CEO candidates shortlisted “The only other farewell we have scheduled is a morning tea with council staff,” said the KDC’s corporate services manager, Barbara Ware. Mr McKerchar said he had resigned because he was not getting any younger and his health, affected by diabetes, was not as robust as he would like. “I have helped the council and the community to achieve some significant outcomes during my time here,” Mr McKerchar added. He went on to cite the leading edge wastewater scheme for Mangawhai and the new 50-metre swimming pool in Dargaville, amongst these.

Recognition for Kaipara volunteers by Joanne Speechly Two Kaipara ladies have been honoured at the SPARC Sport Volunteer Awards 2011 for the time they have dedicated to sport in their communities. The two were among a host of nominees in three categories and the Kaipara only missed out on the student vote. Norma Ker won the Lifetime Achievement award for her work with netball and women’s leisure marching. She previously won a similar award for Service to Sport in the Kaipara. Norma was one of four regional finalists in this year’s award and says she was overwhelmed at her nomination. At the awards however, the judges surprised everyone by announcing that they could not make a decision between the finalists due to their many years of dedication. “So we all got it!” says Norma. “And I am just wrapt!” For the past thirty years, Norma has dedicated every Saturday to netball and she loves to see children succeed. She is the patron of Northern Wairoa Netball Centre, the office lady who makes sure each game runs smoothly and on time, the traffic controller who points everyone in the right direction and the familiar voice over the loud speaker. Norma started marching in the 1950s as a fifteen year old and later became Centre Chief NZ Judge of Northland and judged at NZ Championships. She continues to co-ordinate the women’s leisure marching in Dargaville, which meets weekly and is available for events. Terri Donaldson won the Volunteer Award for her work with rugby union and squash and she is involved in many more community endeavours, both sporting and otherwise. Terri organises the girls’ rugby at Otamatea High School, along with the squash team and is the current chairperson for the Maungaturoto Squash Club and the junior co-ordinator. She is also the chairperson for Maungaturoto JMB Rugby Club, has played rugby and refereed for Northland, organises the high school pet day, the Christmas parade and is part of the Resident’s Association. “I was chuffed,” says Terri. “It’s pretty humbling when you get your name called out and you go up there to get the big award and see the pedigree of the people around you. It was funny when Tama Jones, from Sport Northland, presented the award, he said ‘Terri will give us a speech, she’s never short of words’ and I said ‘I think for once, I am!’” In the past, Terri has been involved in theatre, swimming and cricket to name a few and she is currently a volunteer for the Rugby World Cup.

The first of Tangiteroria Tavern’s monthly car boot sale and market day was a major success with a great turn out, despite the poor weather. The event will now take place on the first Sunday of every month through the spring and summer months as a fundraiser for the boar hunt in July next year. “We’re now on the boar hunt circuit, so we’re fundraising for next year,” says hotel proprietor, Sheryl Harrison. “Basically, any stall holder is welcome to sell whatever they want — fresh produce, kids’ toys, anything. “Each stall holder pays $5 and the money will go toward prizes for the boar hunt. Stall holders need to be here for set-up by 10am and then people can come and buy goods from 10.30am. “Our first market day was awesome. We had fourteen stalls, plus a sausage sizzle run by the school, a live singer and then rugby in the afternoon. It was a great turn-out so let’s hope for a sunny day next time. Sheryl Harrison and partner, Keary Stuart, took over ownership of the tavern on April Fool’s Day 2010 and originally planned to make it their new home and not continue the business. However, once they arrived, the locals voiced they would support them. “It’s been awesome. Keary and I are really enjoying what we’re doing, though running a tavern is a first for us — a home and business in one.” The couple and their two teenage boys had previously lived in a 10.5 metre motor home for nine years and decided they needed to spread out.

Beware of marine pests by Paul Campbell

Keeping a close eye on the Kaipara Harbour The first of a series of six workshops to highlight the problem of marine pests in the Kaipara harbour as well as the marine waterways Northland-wide has been held in Dargaville this week, in an initiative undertaken jointly by the Northland Regional Council and MAF Biosecurity New Zealand. While the Kaipara’s harbour users, including recreational fishers, coastal residents and commercial concerns kicked off the programme, workshops will continue until Saturday, in Whangarei, Russell, Whangaroa, Rawene and Kaitaia. “These two-hour workshops are for people who want to find out more about marine pests and how they can help look after Northland’s coast,” said NRC biosecurity officer, Gail Townsend. “Many marine pests can be encountered by those simply walking along a beach or swimming or paddling in shallow water, so the workshops are for everyone who uses the coast, not just divers, boaties or those working in marine-related fields.” The workshops include what marine pests are and how they spread,

what they look like and what to do if you find one. Among the roughly 20 species being covered will be a number that are already in Northland, including several sea squirts, but the list will also include others like the particularly invasive Pacific sea star which have yet to reach New Zealand waters — a case of forewarned being forearmed. The workshops also include a number of harmless native marine species which can be confused with introduced pests. A memorable dream ride “We’ve been fizzing about it ever since we came back,” says Trevor Moss, who has recently spent 42 days on a bike tour around the United States with his son, Shane, and Ken and Elain Foster. The four Dargaville residents were part of an organised tour with the Far North Ulysses Motor Bike Club, which covered nearly 14,000 kilometres across the States and Canada. “You can try and imagine what you’ll be in for but it just blows you away. We were fortunate to be part of an organised tour, so every day we knew where we were going,” says Trevor. “It was massive, just massive,” agrees Elain Foster. “You’ve got no idea until you get there. Everything is big — big motorways, thousands of houses, huge canyons and miles of barren desert. Even the vehicles, the meals and the furniture is big.” The tour started in Los Angeles and travelled up the coast into Canada, before heading back through the mid-western states to LA and included popular tourist spots, such as the Grand Canyon, Mt Rushmore and Hoover Dam. “Some days we covered 390 miles, which is 624 kilometres — that’s like here to Wellington!” continues Trevor. “In all, we covered roughly 13,700 kilometres. “I decided to do the tour because I’m young enough and I can — you just have to make the decision, stick it on the bucket list.” One of the many memorable moments for Ken and Elain is Mount Evans which, at 14,700

ft above sea level, is the highest paved road in North America. In an empty, isolated town in Canada, the intrigued couple asked a restaurant owner where all the people come from and she replied that her patrons will travel a hundred miles, just for a meal. “We also ran into one guy who worked on a dairy farm and they milk all day,” says Ken. “They’re in a 500-miles-long, 50-mile-wide valley, they have their own vet and nutritionist on site and the cow shed is automated — it puts the cups on and everything.” “Every day, it was like switching on the discovery channel,” concludes Trevor. “Every day, it was amazing.”

The Fun Run is back! It’s time to don the running shoes, fill the water bottles and get ready to take part in Maungaturoto Primary School’s ‘Round the Block Fun Run and Walk’. The annual event will take you on a circuit, which explores the beautiful countryside of Maungaturoto on Saturday, October 29. “It’s a PTA fundraiser for Maungaturoto Primary School, so we are trying to get as many people along as possible,” says PTA vice-president, Nyree Alcock. “To add some variation, we’re again involving the new community walkway so it’s in a really nice setting and not all road based. “We also wanted it to be a healthy

fundraiser that encourages kids to be active and gets the community out exercising. “The fun run and walk will be over by lunchtime and then there’ll be a sausage sizzle and drinks available. There are heaps of spot prizes on the day, donated by local businesses. “People who live in Maungaturoto will know what ‘round the block’ means. Basically the circuit is down past the high school, up Judd Road, through town and back to the Country Club.” Entries are available at Tony’s Maungaturoto and will be available on the day. Registration is adults $8, children $5 and for more information contact Tina on 09 4318 180.

The Otamatea Area Committee of St John is selling off books, furniture, clothing, tools, appliances and all manner of bric-brac in its annual Trash and Treasure event to raise funds to equip its newly formed cadet unit with uniforms and other necessities. The cadets have 50 young members, in a major initiative to expand the service organisation’s ranks for the future. Sales started this week and will run daily from the Maungaturoto Public Hall until Saturday, when the remaining goods will go under the auctioneer’s hammer starting at 10am. Organiser Albie Paton and volunteers have spent the last few weeks collecting items for sale, and these included a pool table, computer desks, televisions and radios, and a Yamaha organ among a wide range of items. “And look out for some bargains. On Tuesday, October 11 we will be open until 7pm so those folks at work all day can pop by,” he said. “On Wednesday, Thursday and Aladdin’s Cave?: Trash and Treasure Friday we will be open from 9am to co-ordinator Albie Paton with part of his donated 5pm. Then the auction is on Saturday hoard — now on sale or awaiting auction in Maungaturoto and some of the better items which may have had a reserve price will be knocked down to the bidders. “We’ve also run a number of raffles with the event and these will be drawn then, with the cadets running a barbecue, as they will be doing each day.” St John will also be running an information and recruitment desk. “This is for anyone seeking to find out more about, or join a most worthwhile organisation as volunteers or cadets, with possible career opportunities,” said Mr Paton.

Kaipara Art Awards The Kaipara District Community Arts Award 2011 is back for a second year and the works will be on display at the Kauri Museum from Monday, October 17, until November 17. However, after the success of last year’s event KDC community development facilitator, Heidi Dreyer, is disappointed that there are so few entries in some categories. “We created an ‘other media’ category to support jewellery, flax, glass and wood, but we’ve received no entries and there are very few pottery items. Last year it was so successful that we had to move the venue to the Kauri Museum at Matakohe, for extra space. “These awards are meant to be for everyone in the Kaipara and it will be really sad if the pottery and other media categories miss out. Because of this, although entries closed on October 11, there is a window of opportunity for some late submissions.” If anyone has art work they can enter in either of these categories, please submit these to Heidi at KDC or email Heidi at hdreyer@ kaipara.govt.nz. Late entries will be dealt with on a case by case basis. The award is open to all practising artists who reside in Kaipara district and spans any form of the visual and decorative arts. The theme for this year’s award is ‘The Kaipara from the Pacific to the Tasman’. There is five categories and the winner in each category will win a $500 cash price. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will also receive a $500 cash prize. The categories are: Sculpture; Painting/drawing; Photography; Pottery and ceramics, and Other Media, including jewellery, flax, glass and wood. The exhibition at the Kauri Museum is free of charge and Heidi is encouraging everyone to attend during the month. The awards will conclude with an evening gala on November 17, when the prize winners will be announced. The KDC is being assisted by both the Mangawhai and Dargaville Arts Associations and the awards are being sponsored by the Kaipara Lifestyler, Brookfield Lawyers, Westmoreland Homes, Northland Waste and MPL Landscaping. The cost to submit an art work is $10 and there is a maximum of three entries per artist.

ANNUAL SOCIAL

A Sincere Message of Thanks

Settlers Day is when The Kauri Museum comes alive.

Last Saturday, once again, our Northland community and visitors from afar gathered to pay tribute to our early settlers, with a wonderful open day of exhibits and events.

The annual social of the Presbyterian Church was held last Wednesday night in Montgomery’s Hall. In spite of the inclement weather there was a fairly large gathering. The Reverend P. M. Munro of St. Luke’s, Auckland, presided and during the evening gave a short address. An acceptable programme of musical items was gone through and the audience was highly appreciative. At the close, refreshments were handed round and the meeting, which was enjoyed by all present, was concluded by the singing of the National Anthem.

This is a public acknowledgement to those who helped in any way and for the support and voluntary time given. Your contribution to Settler’s Day success is hugely appreciated! From Management of The Kauri Museum

Four days of fabulous weather and fantastic conditions made for a memorable trip for twentyfive Dargaville High School students. The group, along with teachers and parent helpers were on a school excursion to test out their expertise on the slopes at Mount Ruapehu. The Year 10 to 13 students visited both the Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields and spent their evenings at National Park. Some students were complete novices, while others were more advanced in both skiing and snowboarding. “Some of the students are very good, particularly the foreign students,” says teacher,

However, the Omamari farmers bought the property with little idea what to do with it, beyond it being a nice house. “We wanted to buy a house in town and our real estate agent mentioned this,” says Peter. “He said it’s on the river and you can tie your boat up right outside. “We also thought it was a beautiful building and really wanted to fix it up. We also wanted a challenge but mostly, we think it’s just a beautiful old house. “Eventually, we knew we’d have to do something with it. It’s too big for us and will cost a lot to keep going — kind of like a big old car. “I think what we’d really like for the place is to have functions, with people staying here as well,” adds Peter. “For example, a wedding could be held downstairs and the out-of-town guests can stay upstairs.” “There’s lots of options,” adds Pam. “Our visitors and guests usually wake up with lots of ideas at four in the morning! “I think we’ll really enjoy the sociability of having guests but who knows what the future will bring.” For now, the refurbished heritage building is operating as a boutique Bed and Breakfast on the idyllic Mangawhare waterfront. Upstairs there are four ensuite rooms with king or twin single beds plus two single rooms and two double or triple rooms with a shared bathroom. Downstairs the spacious dining room, complete with the original kauri table and floorboards, is available for small or large functions. The infrastructure of the original public bar has been kept intact, should it be used again, but in the meantime it is a spacious guest room.

Lyndsey Bargh Physiotherapy in Dargaville specialises in getting you back to work and enjoying life after an injury — large or small. Sometimes, even a minor stumble can cause damage and on-going pain that is best dealt with by a professional, in such cases, Lyndsey Bargh Physiotherapy should be your first point of call. Lyndsey Bargh, who heads the practice, has 15 years’ experience and extensive training to back her tried and true methods. Sports injuries, work accidents and life’s general tumbles at home or on the farm can all take a toll, and require a degree of rehabilitation at the hands of a qualified practitioner. Their consulting rooms are based in a quiet, modern setting at Fosters Mall, in Dargaville. Two days per week are devoted to the Maungaturoto clinic, which is based at the medical centre. Completing the Lyndsey Bargh Physiotherapy team is Reuben Rhodes and Victoria Wigram. “We are now open two evenings a week for those that are unable to attend an appointment on weekdays,” says Lyndsey. “We are also assisting all the sports codes in Dargaville, which is a new development and I spend a couple of hours a week at the resthome as part of the PHO’s fall prevention programme, for those people over the age of 80.” Lyndsey is a qualified treatment provider for both private and ACC patient/ client consultations — no GP referral is required. “I have worked in private practice for 15 years and I’m interested in a wide range of different physiotherapy functions concentrating on musculoskeletal injuries and work related injuries.” Call Lyndsey on 09 439 1656.

Margaret Bishop and husband, John, own Newman Engineering (2004) Ltd, a locally owned and operated engineering firm that provides agricultural and general engineering services to meet the needs of New Zealanders nationwide. The company is also well known around the country for their innovative farm equipment, such as Landplane®, de-CRAP-it®, the mini deCRAP-it® and Serious Incinerator®. While John is the engineer in the partnership, Margaret is the manager and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the business and human resources. “I love what I do,” says Margaret. “I really enjoy working with people and I love the customer base that we have. “I think it would be fair to say that we have a good reputation. We’re proud of our business and we’re proud of our team but we’re always looking for ways to improve what we do and how we do it. “I’ve always been part of the service culture and one of my key goals is trying to meet peoples’ needs and exceed their expectations. When we can’t do this, we’re honest about it and we’re known for recommending other companies who can meet our customers’ needs if we can’t. Margaret realises that it is uncommon for a woman to be managing an engineering firm but she has worked hard to overcome stereotypes. Recently, Newman Engineering has employed Roseanne Crawford-Hunt as a female trade assistant and Tracey Nilsson works alongside Margaret in the office. The on-going training of apprentices is another goal for Margaret and John and they currently employ three aspiring engineers. In the last seven years, four Newman Engineering apprentices have completed their qualifications and this is a culture that Margaret plans to continue for many years to come. For any engineering job give Margaret and her team a call on 09 439 5065.

Traci Moring

Julie Dickeson

Nine months ago, beauty therapist and nail technician, Traci Moring, started the successful Millennium Skin Beauty and Body Clinic in Maungaturoto and says after 12 years, she is still passionate about her chosen career. “The beauty industry still excites me because it is forever changing and evolving. The treatments and products that are now available is mind blowing and skin technicians can now treat many of the skin conditions that only a doctor or dermatologist could several years ago. “I believe it is never too late to start looking after your skin and my motto is ‘making healthy skin a reality’. I am now in my forties and I’ve used numerous skin care ranges but I now recommend Environ Skin Care. “I use only the best quality products and equipment and believe hygiene is of the utmost importance, along with professionalism and treatments that will get results. Traci, who has lost two family members to breast cancer, is running an Xpress Facial special for the month of October and will donate $5 from every facial to the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation. She is also the local co-ordinator for the Breast Cancer Foundation and will be out collecting donations on Friday, October 14. Millennium Skin Beauty and Body Clinic is located with Well Kneaded Massage at 86 Hurndall Street or visit www.millennium-beauty.co.nz. In the coming months, Traci will be offering private beauty therapy tutoring for those who are already studying but need some extra help for their exams. “My opening hours are flexible, just call and I’ll endeavour to accommodate any appointment any time or day — even during the weekends, within reason!” adds Traci. Contact Traci on 09 431 8220.

Driving from Dargaville to Whangarei (or vice versa), travellers will find themselves passing through the little town of Maungatapere, home of one of the best little cafes in the district. The Office Cafe is the home of fresh food and hot, velvety smooth Chiasso coffee — an oasis of relaxation and hearty cuisine situated in the converted offices of the old dairy factory! Owner Julie Dickeson and her husband Graeme have renovated the art-deco era building into a unique eatery, with a kitchen that’s always busy turning the best local ingredients into mouthwatering cafe fare. After managing a successful English pub, their aim was to bring that experience back home to New Zealand, and they have done so with aplomb, creating a relaxed environment and a stunning menu centred around classical cafe favourites. Julie has worked hard over the past 18 months to make The Office Cafe a local ‘must see’, with patrons flocking to try her famous eggs Benedict on apricot toast, decadent carrot cake with cream-cheese icing, and an all-day breakfast big enough to tame the mightiest hunger. It’s a success story which owes a lot to her passion and determination, and accolades must go to her talented team of bakers, baristas and cooks for making her vision a reality. If you’re making a trip across from coast to coast, this little gem of a cafe is the perfect place to stop and relax. Come on in and see for yourself why The Office Cafe is becoming a byword for fresh food, great coffee and friendly service!

During the Rugby World Cup Sue (pictured here with Leanne Pomare from Halo Hair Design) has been the ambassador for our district, helping hundreds of international guests get the most out of their time ‘out west’. For this tireless advocacy of the Dargaville and Kauri Coast region, Sue Taylor is the winner of our first Community Angels’ award, honouring those people who make our community extraordinary! Each week we’ll be selecting a worthy nominee to receive a big THANKS from the people of the Kaipara, a little recognition, and some care and attention from the professional stylists at Halo Hair Design in Dargaville. Their kind contribution of artistry and skill allows us to reward our ‘Community Angels’ with a beautiful new hairstyle — a token of the whole district’s appreciation from our local style professionals! If you know of someone deserving of some TLC and an accolade for their hard work, please email us at info@thelifestyler.co.nz and tell us about their achievements! We’d love to offer them our thanks and a little something back, courtesy of the Kaipara Lifestyler and Halo Hair Design.

Last years’ Ruawai and Methven Lions exchange students enjoying the summer experience on the Kaipara Harbour Hot air ballooning over the Southern Alps, snowskiing, jet boating, a shopping day in Christchurch and a helicopter flight are on the menu for four Ruawai College students selected to take part in a ten-day student exchange programme, sponsored by the Ruawai Lions and Methven Lions Clubs. Ruawai students Brad Crosbie, Vaughan Thompson, Phoebe Fordyce and Madison Salter are currently visiting the Methven area and in January four Methven students will visit Ruawai. Less wasteful waste water When a septic system is working well, it’s something most people don’t spare a thought for. In fact, it’s only when a septic system goes wrong that most people really pay attention to the feat of engineering which makes their home liveable! Thankfully, there is one local man who knows all about septic systems, tackling the sometimes dirty job of making sure the West Coast’s waste water systems are up to scratch – and up to code. His distinctive number plate tells the tale, but Darryl Bagby is quick to remind us that his job is really all about keeping homes safe and hygienically clean. Darryl has been in the renovations trade for over 30 years, so he knows the ins and outs of repairing and maintaining the perfect home. Installing a top-notch septic system is literally ‘doing the groundwork’ for the future, and when a home is upgraded (with a modern en suite, for example) it’s often a council requirement that the septic system is updated at the same time. That’s a good thing, because modern septic systems are far more efficient than those of yesteryear. Darryl recommends and uses the Super Treat system, which adds oxygen to the waste water, allowing microbes to do a better, faster job. These little organisms are ‘nature’s janitors’, and they clean up anything nasty the natural way. Super Treat systems use less electricity and are more robust as a result of their unique construction. Darryl’s company, Bagby Property Services, incorporates West Coast Waste Water Treatment, but he’s at home with all kinds of repairs, alterations, minor renovations, painting, wallpapering, fencing and decking. Older homes are a specialty, so if you have an old villa that needs some TLC, Darryl can restore it to its former glory. Darryl even works for The Historic Places Trust. So if you are looking to upgrade, it makes sense to talk to the man who can do it all – from the parts of your home you see every day to the vital infrastructure hidden under the ground!

New Grizzly a roaring success Yamaha’s Grizzly series of ATVs has long been legendary for toughness and practicality — a byword for reliability in the most demanding environments. But the next generation of this hard-working machine is by no means a stark and utilitarian tool. The engineers at Yamaha have worked hard to refine the performance of the Grizzly (both the 700cc and 500cc models), adding a level of comfort and ease of use which would be the envy of some road cars. While the capable power of the big 700cc and 550cc power plant is still all that you could want for a hard day’s work, Yamaha have upgraded key areas to make a day’s work aboard the Grizzly a more comfortable and safer experience! The innovative speed-sensitive power steering of the Grizzly removes the chore of wrestling with the handlebars at low speeds. Combined with a low centre of gravity and an innovative chassis the Grizzly handles and rides better than its predecessors, traversing uneven ground and slopes with aplomb. Independent suspension and a generous ground clearance help smooth out the bumps and the mud.

Attention to detail has been lavished on the Grizzly’s automatic transmission as well — a v-belt system which gives you power when you need it. Unlike other automatics, the Grizzly is also smart enough to know when a little engine braking is needed, slowing your descent when you’re tackling the steep stuff. The switch between four-wheel and twowheel drive is now just as easy as pushing a button, with four-wheel drive delivering ‘locked differential’ torque to really handle a load. All in all, the new Yamaha Grizzly is a great example of innovation in just the right places — the successful core of Yamaha’s flagship ATV has been left just as we wanted it, while every modification hits the spot to provide the safety and comfort the modern market demands.

An investment in maize After 40 years as a farmer, familiarity with machinery is natural for Paparoa’s Rex Browne. “I have been full-time contracting for 18 years while my family, my wife Colleen, son Scott and daughter Hayley, run our 450-acre dairy farm at Paparoa. Colleen manages the property fully, looking after the dairy operation. But in reality, I suppose I have been contracting for 40 years, when you count working my own properties.” The family is milking 300 cows. The farm is typically fairly wet and rolling country and they split-calve autumn-spring, milking once a day.

Men who made the Northern Wairoa . . .

Kayak’s are summer fun

F. A. (Francis) Jones by Brian Eastwood ‘I am prepared to build workers dwellings in the Borough and arrange finance for intending purchasers. Early application is necessary. Signed Francis A. Jones’. That small advertisement appeared in the North Auckland Times in December 1919. Drive over Kaihu river bridge to Mangawhare in 2011, pass Farmlands on River Road, look to your right and you will see a row of houses all looking to be originally off a similar plan. Jones built them as spec houses over a ten-year period starting about 1920. Drive a little further and you can still see the handsome villa built by him as his own home on the corner of Kings Court Avenue and River Road. His workshop stood over on the opposite corner on Kings Court Avenue. Frank Layther bought the villa in 1944. Francis Augustus Jones was born in Arapohue in 1870 and married Sarah Cassidy. He became a busy builder around Northern Wairoa and an even busier public-spirited man in Dargaville. About 1920 he built the two-storied Dargaville Fire Station that once perched over the river at the end of Kapia Street. His team also built the large workshop for an early brick works in Victoria Street near the site of the Municipal Gasworks and today’s Dargaville Motel. Elected in 1925 Jones is Dargaville’s longest serving mayor, retiring after thirteen years in that position. While he was in office, Jones loaned £500 to the Northern Wairoa Experimental Farm at Parore for the purchase of cattle. He drew up plans for the original St. John Ambulance Station built in 1935 and was St John’s first president. As a measure of his standing, Jones was presented with his Presidential badge by St John’s Ambulance Brigade Overseas Chief Commissioner, Grand Prior Colonel James Sleeman. In his official capacity, Jones was largely responsible for them acquiring the land for the station alongside what is now the front entrance to Dargaville’s Memorial Town Hall. The rental was reported to be the mowing of the grass around the Town Hall. In 1937 Mayor Jones officiated at the opening of the Empire movie theatre in Victoria Street.

F. A. (Francis) Jones

As a member of the Chamber of Commerce, he was President when Dargaville Post Office and clock tower was planned in Hokianga Road. Jones was also an owner of the North Auckland Times newspaper. In his leisure time he was a Rotarian and Dargaville Rotary Club elected him as their first president. Jones died at Mangawhare in 1941 aged 71 years after suffering a heart complaint for five years. He is buried at Mt Wesley. Frank Augustus Jones was a huge contributor to the making of Northern Wairoa but perhaps he has not been honoured or remembered as much as some others who have lived and worked in this district.

Kayak fishing is the fastest growing sport in New Zealand right now, with anglers and enthusiasts getting hooked on the light and versatile watercraft in record numbers. But the durable modern kayak is far from limited to just being a platform for a rod and reel, as evidenced by the huge range of watercraft on display at Dargaville Kayaks. Owner Jason Dassler has been into fishing since he was very young, and has an understandable enthusiasm for kayaking too! Combining the two sports is something of a new idea internationally, but for the last few years the number of kayak fishermen in New Zealand has been steadily growing, as anglers find out firsthand about the thrills and the practicality of this novel approach. “It’s stealth fishing,” says Jason. “A kayak makes far less noise than a big boat, and the fish aren’t scared away from your bait!” Even better, a kayak uses no petrol, never needs its motor servicing, and gives you a good workout at the same time. Jason proudly carries the Ocean Kayak range, made here in New Zealand out of recyclable plastic and built Kiwi tough. With a range covering everything from fun kayaks for the kids to serious, camouflaged fishing and hunting kayaks, the Ocean Kayaks range can cater to every kind of outdoor pursuit, and their quality and design means that you’ll be enjoying your new investment for many summers to come! October 2011 Highlights HELL ON HOOVES

Premieres Tuesday October 18 @ 7.30PM

Few sports can compare to that of a professional rodeo — with events ranging from bull riding to barrel racing to the popular rodeo clowns, there is something for everyone. Hell On Hooves presents the most extreme eight seconds in sports today — the most dangerous sports on the planet and leaves little room for error. That is the sport of bull riding. At any second the rider could be thrown from the bull getting trampled by almost a ton of uncontrolled raw power. As each episode

moves forward, interviews with the weekend’s top competitors grab their reactions and expectations as they move toward claiming the Big Buckle. This series looks into the other side of this extreme sport like rodeo clowns, the lifestyle, the fans and life of a cowboy. There is always the excitement of the next bull ride and finding out who will rise to the top and receive the ultimate prize being crowned Canada’s best cowboy. (Repeat screenings available)

And then there were four by Our Rugby Correspondent Excitement, already at a fever pitch, is building ahead of the hotly contested semi finals of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. And while all eyes have been on the All Blacks’ injury woes, a hardfought match against Argentina last weekend has proven once and for all that our men in black are more than just a supporting cast for ‘Dan the Man’. With the celebrated five-eighths still sidelined, it was time for the rest of the team to step up, and step up they did, trouncing the Pumas 33-10 after a bit of a shaky start. Colin Slade came on to fill the big boots of Mr Carter, but his own injury problems saw him rotate back off again, clearing the way for rookie Aaron Cruden, who held up well under the immense pressure of the sudden-death quarter final — as well as the biggest hit of the game! Also deserving of accolades is penalty kicking sniper Piri Weepu, who all but saved the match from the jaws of defeat with his boot. In the opposite corner (to mix sports metaphors) this Sunday will be a fired-up Australian side, who squeezed past South Africa to book a place in the semis and expunge the hurt of their loss to Ireland. The clash of the coaches between Graham Henry and Robbie Deans will be decided one way or another in this epic match — with national pride and bragging rights on the line for a fouryear stretch expect a physical game and some Machiavellian strategy. France edged out England in an ignominious defeat for the English team, who will be sent home chastened. But the big upset for the semi finals is surely the rise and rise of Wales, a team who have tightened up their discipline both on and off the field.

Parallels are already being drawn with the great welsh teams of yesteryear who crushed all before them to a chorus of harmonising fans, but the smart, focussed game which the Welsh team played against Ireland is far more technical than the passionate but often blunt rugby they’ve displayed in previous tourneys. They’ll be partying in the streets of Cardiff long into the night for days to come, and an upset against France this week will see the whole nation consumed by patriotic fervour. It’ll be a repeat of Agincourt if the Welsh pull it off — the historic battle where the plucky longbowmen of Wales (under English command) took down the heavily armoured knights of France. We’re down to the sharp end of the competition now, and it’s up to all four teams to bring their A game — Australia vs New Zealand on Sunday at 9pm, and Wales vs France on Saturday at 9pm. May the best teams win — by which of course I mean the boys in Black!
