‘‘It was a fabulous event and something that Kaipara can point to with pride.” Dargaville businesswoman, Margaret Bishop, was one of a host of visitors who crammed the Paparoa Hall to capacity last Saturday night for the Paparoa Wearable Arts Gala Evening. “I have been to the national wearable arts in Wellington, and except for the massive infrastructure and dollars that go into that event, Paparoa and Kaipara can be justifiably proud,” she added. WAG organiser, artist Pat George, was similarly impressed. “I was stunned by the huge out-of-town contingent. I didn’t know many of the faces on Saturday night and the hall was packed.” The crowd saw creations in categories including Kauri Forest Fantasy, recycled Creationz, Rugby Bizzare Bra, Fantasy, Colour Me Black and Silver, Sea Life and Insect Alley. The overall winner on the night was ‘Skatie Perry’, which also took out the Recycled Creationz award for designer, Sandra Guest. Top in the Trash to Art section was a sculpture by Craig Jones ‘Search 4 Inspiration’, which also won the People’s Choice award. “We are now right into next year’s Wag event, which marks the 150th anniversary of Paparoa and Kaipara settlement,” said Ms George. “For now, those plans are still under wraps.’’

It’s now official

Last year, the Dargaville Scout group celebrated their centenary but there has long been some confusion about whether the group started in 1909 or 1910. Recently a newspaper clipping from the Wanganui Chronicle, dated July 28 1910, confirms that the group indeed started that year. Leading up to the centennial celebrations, group leader Brian Burnett said there were a Dargaville scout leader Brian Burnett great deal of old photographs, newspaper articles and uniforms still around and of particular interest was an enrolment certificate from 1910. However, confusion had been caused by a newspaper clipping from 1909 referring to an event that the Dargaville Scouts had attended during that year. The recent discovery of the Wanganui Chronicle clipping states: ‘DARGAVILLE, July 28, 1910. The Boy Scout movement was successfully initiated at a public meeting held in Dargaville last night. The Mayor presided, and all arrangements were made to commence a corps. ‘The intention is to form a troop under private control, thus avoiding red tape and too much drill. Mr H. G. Bellamy was elected to scoutmaster’. Brian Burnett is pleased that the scouting movement in Dargaville can now confirm the group’s official initiation.

Bra chain record in sight With the world record in sight and with one last ditch effort, everyone throughout New Zealand is being asked to find those old or unwanted bras to help support Girl Guiding New Zealand’s attempt to break the world record for the longest chain of 200,000 bras. “We are nearly there; we only need another 12,000 bras. Now that may seem a lot but in reality it’s not really, considering we have collected over 156,000 bras in under two years,” said Dargaville Girl Guide leader, Robyn Martinovich. “The length of the chain would be approximately 184 kilometres, or 3,630 times the length of an Olympic swimming pool and if the average weight of a bra is 55 grams,

200,000 would weigh approximately 12 tonnes or the same as a 49-seater bus! “I hope we can all do one last push and achieve our original goal. Our main focus hasn’t changed; we still want to raise awareness of breast cancer. The more we can do to help the better. I know from letters I have received that this campaign has encouraged some women to go and get checks,” said Robyn. “I know this is what us New Zealanders do best. We come together to help each other achieve great things!” Contact Robyn Martinovich, 09 439 4105, or 021 850 220 or send bras to 550 Mahuta Road, RD1, Dargaville 0371.

“All those who rallied around to address the problem are to be thanked for their prompt and professional approach to what was looking like a major disaster for the (pool) Trust, the community and the pool.” Community Spaces Manager, Thomas Patterson said “It is quite likely that when the pool is filled it will level out even more and return to its build level.” The statement added this was the ‘consensus of all parties including the engineer and construction company. Hydrostatic pressure appears to have been the culprit. ‘Investigations will continue into what caused this so it doesn’t happen again, but it looks likely that the pool will be able to open much quicker than we had been thinking earlier in the week.’ Ms Ware said the hydrostatic valves in the pool designed to relieve damaging pressure appeared to have malfunctioned and this would be covered in the continuing tests this week. “It’s my understanding they didn’t release,” she said.

It’s breast cancer action month

Breast Screen Aotearoa’s mobile screening van is currently in town and offering free breast screening for women aged 45 to 69. The van will be parked outside the St John’s Ambulance Centre at 90 Normanby Street, Dargaville, and women are strongly encouraged to make an appointment before November 25. Every year in New Zealand over 2700 women — and around 20 men — are diagnosed with breast cancer and around 650 women will die from the disease this year. Interestingly, the Auckland Breast Cancer Register recently released data, which shows that 95% of women who are diagnosed at a mammogram are still alive five years later, while only 73% of women

who detected their cancer through feeling a lump are still alive. Te Ha o Te Oranga are working in partnership with Dargaville Medical Centre to try and encourage women to take advantage of the mobile screening unit. “We provide support for women and encourage them to make an appointment with the mobile breast screening unit,” says Te Ha o Te Oranga social worker and health promoter, May Pivac. “We’re particularly focussed on the hardto-reach and out-of-town women and can also provide transport if necessary.”

Riverside Produce Market The successful Riverside Produce Market will celebrate its first birthday on October 20 and the organisers are promising a festive atmosphere for the occasion. Dargaville’s weekly bazaar, featuring an ever-changing variety of fresh produce and crafts, has proved to be an asset to the community. As part of the birthday festivities, one lucky punter will win a grocery hamper worth $500, filled with an item from each stall holder plus other non-perishable goodies. When a customer makes a purchase at any stall, they will receive a ticket to enter the draw and if they make five purchases from five stalls, that is five chances to win. The hamper will be drawn at 5.30pm on Thursday.

Mangawhai EcoCare Meeting The meeting will be held at the Senior Citizen’s Centre in Fagan Place on Sunday at 1.30pm, for a report back on requests to the Kaipara District Council gathered at a meeting last month. That gathering heard claims that the EcoCare rates on the community are unlawful and invalid, and that Kaipara District Council debt — at $60 million for the sewage scheme alone — has ‘reached the point where the collapse of the district is inevitable unless urgent and drastic action is taken’.

“We will be reporting back on progress since our last meeting, and the result of a long list of questions on EcoCare financing, and a request for an independent audit that we submitted to council,” said association treasurer, Bruce Rogan. “I have had a letter from the mayor, Neil Tiller, who says he will not be attending our meeting. “He has also said that council may carry out its own internal audit of the costs of the scheme. The rest of our questions have not received an answer. “It appears we are left with the possibility of civil disobedience and/or approaches to the Auditor General, the Ombudsman and the Minister for Local Government.”

“Well done to both the stall holders and the customers. Rain or shine, they come out and support the market and it’s been great for the town too. “Socially, the markets are a fabulous place to come and have a coffee, chit chat and catch up with people that you haven’t seen in a while.”The Riverside Produce Markets are held every Thursday at the AD Focus car park between 2.30 and 5.30pm. A range of local produce and craft, from kumara to chopping boards, is available. Come along to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and listen to local talented buskers.

OCTOBER 19 - 2011

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Sediment study gets underway by Paul Campbell A definitive study of just how our marine environment is affected by sediment washing to sea is now getting underway on the Kaipara. This month a team of NIWA marine ecologists is undertaking a study of snails, worms, shrimps and other small creatures, setting up experiments on the firm sandy areas that are dry during low tide and covered by water over a 12-hour cycle. As a result, boaties and other shoreline harbour users may see a number of strange additions to the intertidal flats — at least down Tapora way. They are in fact, a form of aquatic parasol, a sun shade. “The work is part of a concerted effort to understand the cumulative effects of stresses that can damage our precious aquatic systems,” said participating scientist, Dr Drew Lohrer. The programme aims to understand the impacts of sediments and nutrients that wash off the land and down the rivers into the harbour and the experiments will be set up at three sites on the Tapora Bank sandflat, in the south-western reaches of the harbour. “Experimental equipment may be visible for a few months during summer, although there will be no major impediments to the collection

Kaipara bound, Niwa researcher and project leader, Dr Drew Lohrer

of shellfish kaimoana,” said Dr Lohrer. “The area planned to be occupied by the experiment will be much less than a quarter of one percent of Tapora Bank. “We have not yet decided on the exact positions of our experimental sites, but we are well aware of the need to avoid seagrass patches. We have no intention of disturbing or restricting access to cockle beds or other mahinga kai, and we can easily avoid sensitive areas.” The researchers have already been in consultation with harbour interest groups, including Te Uri o Hau, to ensure protocols are understood and respected. Under the programme the research team will visit the sites of their experiments at intervals to make various progress measurements. All traces of the experiment will be gone by the

end of May next year, at the latest, according to Dr Lohrer. “One of the more intriguing aspects of the study is NIWA’s plan to look into the influence of highly turbid water on microscopic algae, called diatoms,” he added. “Populations of diatoms live on the sediment surface and act as forage material for the snails, worms, and other animals. “Turbid water, with high concentrations of suspended sediment, will block out the sunlight and inhibit the growth of the diatoms. This may cause a series of cascading effects that the team hopes to capture.” The NIWA team will erect numerous identical sun-shades at each site above patches of sand to investigate the effects of reduced sunlight on the microscopic plants.

Capturing the Soul of the Kaipara Talented local photographer and artist Grant Marshall is passionate about the Kaipara and our ruggedly beautiful west coast, using the medium of photography to capture its power and its many moods With a long career as an advertising agency creative director and commercials director behind him, Grant also has a keen eye for the tourism potential of our part of New Zealand, and as well as exhibiting his panoramic and visually stunning works in galleries, he’s also turned his attention to sharing the beauty of the Kaipara with the rest of the world. “We have to stop looking like a second rate east coast and start looking like the first rate west coast we are — celebrating the mighty harbour, the people, the raw rugged beauty and the real, often living, history of the region,” he says. A golden book opportunity A ‘coffee-table’ book being published to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival in the Kaipara of the Albertlanders, the hardy settlers who pioneered the opening up of the region in the 1860s, will be launched on Sunday, October 30, in Wellsford. Images from Albertland features 120 stunning black and white photographs of Kaipara settlement, chosen and painstakingly restored from 7,000 images captured on glass plate negatives, by pioneer farmer, Harold Kaipara author Paul Campbell Marsh. The book has been produced by Echo Publishing, a company formed by author Paul Campbell and local businessman Allan Mortensen, and follows on from their last successful publication reliving the history of the kauri, Kauri Cameraman. “Reaching all those connected to Albertland settlement — given a diaspora of thousands of their descendants, is just about impossible,” Mr Campbell said. “So we have set aside 20 special invitations to the book launch which are being offered to Kaipara Lifestyler readers. The Albertlanders settled 70,000 acres, encompassing Port Albert, Wellsford, through Kaiwaka to Mangawhai and across through Maungaturoto, Paparoa, Matakohe and beyond. The invitations will be sent to the first 20 people to register at info@echopublishing.co.nz or by calling the Kaipara Lifestyler on 09 439 6933. They will have the opportunity at the launch to purchase a limited, numbered and signed, collectors’ Gold edition of Images from Albertland, before a standard Silver edition goes on general sale. Of the selection of stunning pictures in the book, which is a top quality example of the printers’ art and modern technology, many have never before been published. Major anniversary celebrations to mark the Albertland settlement, by some 3,000 pioneers on a succession of sailing ships, are scheduled in towns and villages around the Kaipara next year, with a flagship celebration over four days at Easter.

AGED CARE MATTERS

Giving wholehearted care to the older person Kia Ora te whanau, this month I am focusing on activities and how they play an important part in maintaining quality of life in the lives of our residents. Most people, when they think of activities in a rest home or private hospital think of the entertainment factor. Keeping people amused and occupied. This is only a part of activities role. Activities are also important for maintaining function both physically and mentally (don’t use it you lose it), helping people to give meaning and purpose to life, (one of the primary tasks in older life being to find meaning), to maintain independence and at the same time connectedness. To bring pleasure and joy, to provide an outlet for people to give out to others and more.

Activities are anything that engages a person. When you think of activity in your day it can involve anything from brushing your teeth to a major social outing or sports activity. As with most things we do here at Kauri Coast we are always looking to advance and improve on what we do and how we do it. With activities we have recently changed our thinking somewhat and while we will continue with the great work our activities officer has been doing building a vibrant programme that engages residents in as many ways as we can we are also moving to a normality activity approach. Whatever people did as normal activity for them prior to coming to stay with us we are aiming to support them in doing so after coming to us. We know that the traditional approach of doing everything for residents is not necessarily the best for them in terms of overall health so we will be supporting them to continue to do those things they are still able and wish to do for themselves. This fits well with our philosophy of working in partnership with residents and families rather than us taking over and deciding what is best for the resident. The same comprehensive service will continue for those who wish to use its full range. In addition to encouraging and supporting normality of function we do have a vibrant programme aimed at individual needs. The daily news paper reading and discussion group is popular. Weekly bingo, interactions with other rest homes with games, outings to community groups such as the RSA provide mental and social stimulation. People who come and play (music), sing, dance, demonstrate (eg local spinning group) all add significant value to our residents lives and their value should not be underestimated. For those residents unable to appreciate group activities one on one time is key and they are provided with reading, massage, memory journeys etc. Some volunteers come and spend time just talking to residents and this also helps to give people a sense of worth and connectedness. Regular van outings with picnic lunches are increasingly popular to the forest, Trounson park, local beaches and parks, the Kai Iwi lakes etc. Residents enjoy pointing out and sharing things that hold significant memories. We appreciate the input of local schools, the girls Brigade, kapa haka groups and individuals who come and provide their time and talents to add something special to the residents day. What you provide is so much more than a diversion in the day. If you have suggestions or a contribution you would like to make to the activities of the residents we would be interested to hear from you. Please contact the activities officer at 09 439 6367.

A deep respect for Fashioning a future New Zealand’s precious stone Not long ago we welcomed acclaimed greenstone carver and artisan Paul Graham to Dargaville — a talented exponent of the ancient art of Pounamu carving. At the time it was noted that Paul is one of a select group of carvers acknowledged by Ngai Tahu as using only authentic and authorised New Zealand jade — the stone known as Pounamu by Maori. In pre-European times this functional and beautiful stone was prized above all else throughout New Zealand, and the Ngai Tahu people of the South Island were its guardians, forging trails deep into the forest and up rivers such as the Arahura to find the deep green stone. A large part of Paul’s journey as a carver and artist using this unique medium has involved exploring the history of Pounamu and of Ngai Tahu themselves. While developing as a carver he travelled to the South Island as part of a joint Outward Bound/Ngai Tahu cultural course, where he walked the greenstone trails up the Arahura and learned about the history of the precious stone — as well as its future. After seeing many reports in the media about the poaching of greenstone, and of unscrupulous carvers labelling foreign jade as Pounamu, Paul was convinced he had to do things the right way. He promised himself that if he was unable to forge a relationship with Ngai Tahu and work legitimately and ethically with true greenstone he would give up carving forever.

Paul, Amy and Ezra Graham — the pounamu artisan and his family

Thankfully for us, after a three month registration process Paul’s application was accepted, putting him in the vanguard of a movement to properly regulate the local industry. “Carving isn’t all about the money,” he says, indicating his collection of beautifully finished traditional pieces. “Learning about the history of Ngai Tahu has given me a great respect for the stone — I’m now making more perfect pieces.” Looking ahead, Paul envisages a time when all greenstone carvers in New Zealand enjoy the same relationship with Ngai Tahu as he does — a mixture of best business practice and good ethics which will guarantee a better future for all involved, as well as making sure each precious Pounamu carving sold is as authentic as a professionally graded diamond!

Tangowahine’s Navit Skelton cleaned up at the recent Bernina Fashion Awards in Whangarei. The young Diploma in Fashion Design student, was placed third in the open fashion section and second-equal in the wearable art section. “I was home-schooled in Tangowahine,” says Navit, “but started playing on a sewing machine as soon as I could reach the peddles. Navit won awards for ‘Summer Snow’, an evening gown, which is inspired by the image of a summer’s day being Award winner, Navit Skelton dashed by unexpected snow. The gown is a warm cream, with faux flowers, layers of silk chiffon and a chiffon cape — like snow is melting off the shoulders. Navit’s award in the wearable arts section is for ‘If a picture paints a thousand words, then why can’t I paint you?’ a piece inspired by ‘If’, a song by Bread. “I love books and I love this song. I imagined a young lad who is deeply in love and the object of his affection is so beautiful, that he can’t describe her. She is the perfect picture. “He can’t find a single word, as she is the picture that paints no words: the one that words cannot describe. Navit Skelton says she never envisioned a full-time career in fashion design and was more interested in being in front of the camera. “I actually wanted to be an actress and did a drama course through NorthTec and after that I did a course in sewing children’s wear. I’ve always been sewing and never thought it could be a career option but now I do.” Now, the award-winning twenty-one-year old student has her sights set high and is hoping to work with Weta Studios in Wellington.

Dargaville cricket association reforms Dargaville’s Cricket Association survived for about a hundred years before lack of players and teams saw its demise in the early nineties. This season however, a committee of proactive sportsmen have helped the association reform. “The senior team has been playing for three or four seasons in the Whangarei competition and the juniors started two or three years ago,” explains team captain, Terry Duncan. “Now we can come together as one association including the juniors, seniors and a high school team. Previously there have been sporadic clubs and it’s all been a bit disjointed. “Cricket’s been really popular with the kids and they have some good numbers coming through. In the next few years, we’ll have some of those players filtering through into the senior grades. “Carters have sponsored us for the last few years, which has been awesome and really helped us financially. The community is also starting to get behind us and two seasons ago, we didn’t lose a game.” James Nyssen, president of the Dargaville Cricket Association committee adds, “We’re very happy to restart the association and it will bode well for cricket in the Northern Wairoa.” The cricket association is keen to hear from people interested in coaching and people can contact Terry on 021 164 6794 or James on 021 131 5912. Cricket practise and home games take place at Dargaville High School — practise is on Wednesdays at 5.30pm and home games are from 12.30pm on Saturdays. New members and supporters are welcome.

75 years of serving the people of Dargaville

by Andy Bryenton

Munn’s Furniture and Furnishings and Munn’s Flooring Xtra turn 75 this month, an anniversary to be proud of for the iconic pair of Dargaville retailers. With three generations having served behind the counter at Flooring Xtra, and the second generation still going strong across the road at their Furniture and Furnishings store, the legacy of George Munn is in good hands. Their customer base also spans the generations, with families loyally supporting their local professionals down through the years, and many a home in Dargaville and the Kaipara

boasting flooring, furniture or finishing touches from the Munn family’s stores. The story began back in 1936, when George Munn opened his first store in Dargaville. With 400 pounds and a rented building George built up a reputation as he built up his stock of rugs, carpets and furniture, surviving the woes of the Great Depression with a combination of determination, faith, and good old fashioned business acumen. By 1938 his brother Maurice had come on board, lending his book keeping skills to the firm, and after the end of WWII younger brother Reg signed on to the growing business as a salesman. The trio were joined n the 1950s by the next generation — Don and Graeme Munn bringing the total of Munn family gentlemen on staff to five!

In 1975 the old shop had to go, making way for a two-storied edifice still housing Munn’s Furniture and Furnishings to this day. Across the street the carpet and flooring side of the business has branched out into its own premises, allying with Kiwi group Flooring Xtra. Between them they are still dedicated to the ideals George founded his business on all those years ago — service, integrity, and a belief in Dargaville and its families. By the occasion of their 50th birthday back in the 1980s, the Munn family had collectively given over 200 years of service to the community, helping make mere houses into beloved family homes. By now that total is closer to half a millennium — and we wish them all the best as they look forward to the future!

The ‘whole home’ approach to effective insulation Many homes built prior to 1991 do not have insulation in their walls — a situation which can leave them feeling cold and unwelcoming, even in spring and summer. Luckily, this flaw in older building practices is easily put right with effective insulation. To create a healthy, comfortable and energy efficient home, you need to take a ‘whole house’ approach to comfort and energy saving, ensuring that your investment is wisely spent. This means not just heating or cooling your home, but ensuring that the ‘thermal blanket’ which keeps that heat or cool inside doesn’t have money-wasting gaps! With uninsulated walls, even a home with a well insulated loft and underfloor can leak warmth in winter, and cool air in summer. This leaves air conditioners, heat pumps, fireplaces and heaters working overtime to compensate, rising power bills as they struggle to cope. A common misunderstanding of how insulation works is the idea that by insulating only the ceiling of a house 35-40% of generated heat can be saved. Without a true ‘thermal blanket’ effect wrapping up the whole home, the walls become huge thermal gaps, akin to wearing a hat and boots in the snow — but no jacket! Until you complete the ‘thermal

blanket’ effect to your home, you won’t be able to contain the heat and have the benefit of the insulation you have already spent money on. When you have insulated the walls you will feel the difference, and see the difference in your power bill. Your family will live in a warmer drier, healthier home, like the benefits of a modern home. Airfoam is the only insulation designed specifically for insulating existing wall cavities and is suitable for all existing homes including weatherboard, fibrolite, plasterboard, stucco and more. This non-toxic, safe and even rodent proof substance has amazing thermal qualities, working to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. Airfoam has been transforming homes for over 25 years and their licensed installers have been thoroughly trained. They can neatly and expertly install Airfoam to complete your ‘thermal blanket’ with minimum disruption to your household. Low interest repayments are now available with the help of the Energy Saver Fund, specifically for Airfoam Wall Insulation. Your Airfoam distributor can tailor repayments to suit your individual needs.

Labour Weekend is coming up, daylight savings has already turned our clocks back to the long evenings of barbecue season, and blue skies are more prevalent as summer comes our way again. The three-day weekend (ironically, it’s a holiday to celebrate the 40 hour work week) is a Kiwi institution, and here in the Kaipara we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to ways to enjoy our time off — and the balmy summer days which Labour Weekend precedes. This weekend is a traditional one for outdoor jobs — the good weather and that extra day give you a little more scope to sort out tasks like painting, weeding, planting, mowing, renovating or even building that deck, fence or barbecue area. Of course help is at hand for all the DIY heroes of the Kaipara from a host of professionals, offering the tools, plans, advice and raw materials to make your outdoor project come together perfectly. And if it’s a job just a little too big for the home handyman, there are many top-notch local tradespeople on call to help you out. If you have all your jobs under control, why not try your hand at fishing — a number one drawcard of the region, and one which promises a free dinner to those who have the knack. For those who don’t a relaxing snooze next to the rod and reel is almost as good as the taste of fresh caught fish anyway! Another option is to check out the tourist attractions in our own back yard. Artists and photographers agree that the west coast is rugged and picturesque, and there are plenty of great sights in this part of the country to take your breath away. Not least among them, is the great Tane Mahuta, New Zealand’s biggest kauri tree and a magnet for foreign tourists. Many locals haven’t been to pay a visit to this forest giant, just up the road! Another great location in the Dargaville hinterland is the Kai Iwi lakes — before the tourist season packs them with holiday makers, they are a tranquil oasis of clear fresh water, naturally formed by volcanic action millennia ago. A day’s walk or picnic here is a great way to relax. Of course no weekend (and no summer) would be complete without great food! Local restaurants are gearing up for summer with a range of fresh menu items and specials, showcasing the succulent seafood and mouthwatering local produce the Kaipara has to offer. Try a hearty breakfast, a light lunch or an evening barbecue at one of our local

OCTOBER 19 - 2011

A bold leap forward for Ford by our motoring correspondent Ford Motor Company have been changing the automotive game since they opened their doors over a century ago, bringing the convenience and freedom of the automobile to the masses with innovative new technologies. Three times in that long and proud history, Ford feel that they have altered the entire playing field, leaving their competitors to follow.

The first time was back in the 1900s, when the venerable model T rolled off the first ever modular production line in uniform gloss black, heralding the end of the era of the horse and cart. Ironically, the second seismic shift came with a picture of a horse on the side — the Ford Mustang ushered in the age of the American muscle car, sparking an arms race which brought more power to a new generation.

It’s Here! tHe all-new 2011 Focus More power, more safety, more innovation, more car for your money!

The third dot on this timeline is now, and Ford reckon that it’s just as important as the previous two. The ‘world car’ concept is Ford’s latest initiative, and it’s already given the motoring public a host of stylish and affordable models. Now the ‘world car’ concept has truly come of age, as one of Ford’s 2000-era success stories is unveiled in its new iteration — the all new 2011 Focus. In this car, there really is a sense of the whole world coming together to produce a machine of rare greatness. Consider the exterior of the sharply styled 5-door hatchback. In top-flight Titanium trim, this car fits clearly into the Ford family between the Fiesta and the Mondeo, but it has its own distinctive presence. With 18 inch alloys and an aerodynamic, taut curve to its roofline mirroring

Ford’s now-signature midline crease through the doors, the Focus has ‘grown up’ into a seriously attractive mid-sized car. There is no whiff of rally-spec ambition here — the new Focus is a sophisticated urbanite with more than a couple of tricks up its sleeve. The list of innovations sported by the new Focus is a list which seems to have been torn directly from the options brochure of a million-dollar luxury marque. For starters, it parks itself. Lexus tried to make this magic trick happen a few years ago, with limited success. Ford have nailed it — to the point that the Focus lets you take your hands off the wheel as it slides into a parallel parking spot, the same distance from the kerb every time. In the roomy cabin you’ll find dual zone climate control, voice activated Bluetooth and radar-sensor equipped adaptive cruise control. Wipers speed up, slow down and stop according to the weather conditions. Rear parking sensors help out if you decide to dock the Focus manually. But its under the hood that the best secrets lie in wait. The engine. While a 1.6 litre DOHC mill is available, there is no reason not to opt for the bigger Duratec 2.0 litre GDI motor — amazingly, it has the same fuel consumption as its little brother. When it comes to keeping the power up and the fuel bill down there is the smooth six-speed PowerShift automatic gearbox. This seamlessfeeling transmission uses a supercar-spec double clutch system, preselecting gears for you to make each shift nigh on imperceptible. All up, it’s easy to see how the new Focus encompasses the spirit of the ‘world car’.

The blackout has begun Last Saturday it was a fine thing to be a member of the French Rugby team. With a red card ruling out Welsh powerhouse Sam Warburton, the French played a by-the-numbers game to clinch a place in the final of this year’s Rugby World Cup. That flash of red was to define the game and will likely go down in history with other controversial calls of the sporting ages — in Wales, it will no doubt take on the status of the infamous underarm bowling incident. But next week — ahh, that, we hope will be a different story. And as the Wallabies nurse their pride and their injuries after a fierce bout on the turf of Eden Park, the French must be looking on and worrying — if only a little — about the steamroller force of the All Blacks. For a game featuring only one try (and that in the sixth minute by a positively incandescent Ma’a Nonu), this was a brutally bloody spectacle, resembling in some moments a glimpse of the old Roman circus. Rarely if ever has an Australian team seemed so battered and dazed when facing New Zealand, but their defence was tight enough to prevent a run of try scoring. Kiwi fans were by turns anguished and elated by the accuracy of Piri Weepu’s boot, and left breathless by a sniper-like 35-metre drop goal by young superstar Aaron Cruden. It may have been only his second chance to get into the tourney, but there is a hint that this 22-year old will one day be listed with the legends of the game. A clear case of ‘watch this space’ for the future — and for the French. The infamously taciturn Graham Henry praised the work of the backs in playing a ‘pretty special’ game, and also reserved some kudos for French team manager Jo Maso, who has pledged to do everything he can to make sure the home team wear their signature strip in the final. With France sporting a dark blue uniform, it will be necessary for one

Rugby superstars of tomorrow learn new skills at the Auckland fan zone

of the teams to switch to more visible white, and Maso has graciously conceded that his team will do the right thing by Kiwi fans. Even if France are defeated on the pitch, this is a victory for good manners and sportsmanship which we shouldn’t forget. Henry remarked — “We’re the All Blacks,

we’re playing at home and we wear black, so it’s an obvious one. But I do thank him.” Now all that remains is 80 minutes of grit, flair and determination before one team can proudly lift the Webb-Ellis trophy. May the best players take the glory!
