‘Some way to go’ for vaccinations u by Paul Campbell

While Super Saturday has raised the Covid vaccination levels across the country, Kaipara still has “some way to go before we get to 90 per cent,” says Mayor Jason Smith, after more than 600 people received the vaccine last weekend in events in Dargaville, Paparoa and Mangawhai.

“The turnout was really great, but this represents some three per cent of Kaipara District’s eligible people getting their first or second jab,” he said. Of Saturday’s turnout, 343 vaccinations were delivered at the Te Ha Oranga event at The Warehouse car park, 119 injections in Mangawhai and 120 in Paparoa, the two latter towns visited by a second vaccination bus, which will continue to cover the eastern Kaipara communities. Additional vaccinations continued at the Normanby Street centre in Dargaville and at a marae event. In wider Northland, where there are still places of interest following a boundary-breaking Covid-positive visit from Auckland, there were no community cases as this edition went to print. There were 5,115 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine given on October 16, 2,286 as first the dose with 2,688 second doses for a total of 210,313 doses given across Northland as of last Monday morning. While Auckland remains the key barometer for lockdown levels in Northland and Waikato, which were indicated as of midnight last Monday, the ‘vaxathon’ took the city nearer to its target of 90 per cent. However, director-general of health, Ashley Bloomfield, says Covid cases will continue to rise. Before the cabinet met, he said Auckland’s border would need to stay in place until the rest of the country’s vaccination rates also moved up. p When Covid lockdown made it hard to hear customers’ orders at local engineering company Farrand and Mason, the team there took it as a challenge to fix with ingenuity. Calling on some basic principles of sound and how it moves, the engineers quickly constructed a modern take on the old coffee can radio that has entertained children for decades. The talk tube situated at the door now means there’s no need to holler for assistance. A regular ‘hello’ is amplified down the pipe and made clear to the Farrand and Mason crew. Now that’s Kiwi number eight wire problem-solving.

p The Kaipara District Council’s LittaTrap system not only stops plastics from polluting waterways; it’s also helping identify who are the most respectful litter preventers. Sites across the district have been trapping refuse all autumn, and the results are in. A total of 5,709 items were captured in a threemonth period. This is a 17% increase in the number of items trapped in the summer audit. Cigarette butts were again the most frequently caught item, with 2,052 cigarette butts captured (36% of all items). Overall, the dominant source of litter was plastic (70%), followed by glass (8%). Mangawhai’s Moir Street trap was the most full, with Dargaville citizens taking extra care; one Dargaville trap held just four items. It’s a good reminder to be a tidy Kiwi this summer and protect the environment.

Beach access damaged Leader named for harbour repair

u by Andy Bryenton

Massive erosion has closed the access to Baylys Beach, keeping vehicles off the sand and blocking off pedestrian walkways to homes at the popular seaside spot.

p The power of the sea and torrential rain combined to destroy access to Baylys Beach; could a longterm fix be part of the council’s Climate Change Adaptation pilot scheme?

Torrential rain and high tides combined to batter the accessway, destroying the road, exposing water pipes and undercutting concrete structures. “Engineers assessed the site on October 8, and their initial report gave our maintenance team some immediate remedial options that we will implement as soon as possible,” said Kaipara District Council spokesperson Ruby Mitchell. “This includes installing large rocks (rock spalls) at the entrance, along the edge of the stream alignment.” “Our contractors will then backfill the area with compacted lime rock. Lime rock is cohesive and will provide better resistance to any future weather impacts in the short to medium term. That work is expected to take five to 10 working days,

depending on weather, and the beach access would reopen after that.” Last week, Kaipara District councillors discussed the pilot trial sites for climate change countermeasures. Previous attempts to tame the sea’s surges are now visibly crumbling. With climate change acknowledged to be a future threat, Baylys Beach is on the short-list of six possible trial locations for the council’s adaptive approach. Additionally, a stormwater project is planned, set to break ground in January next year. This plan incorporates enhancement and stabilisation of the stream to the beach, and the creation of a half-hectare wetland, which will slow surface water descending through the catchment area. ¢

The $300 million clean-up project for the Kaipara Harbour has a new leader with Justine Daw announced in the role of Pou Tātaki of the Kaipara Moana Remediation Programme (KMR) the decade-long plan to reverse ongoing environmental degradation by halving sediment loss from land to sea. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing between the government, Northland Regional Council, Auckland Council and Kaipara Uri signalled the official launch of the programme under a joint committee to establish foundation work. Now, Justine Daw, a board member for Reconnecting Northland and the deputy chair for the Worldwide Fund for Nature, will be taking over from acting Pou Tātaki Alan Wilcox. Ms Daw has recently provided strategic leadership to support Jobs for Nature investments in pest control, directions for groundwater research, priorities for environment and climate science, and new economic opportunities for Northland. “KMR brings together all my passions,” she says. “The programme’s whole kaupapa is about connecting and supporting communities, environmental restoration and innovative science and research.” Having returned from many years overseas and in Wellington, Justine

National Poetry Day celebrated u by Our Literary Correspondent

Winners have been announced in The Kauri Museum’s annual poetry contest, carrying a Kaipara Harbour theme for this year’s day of verse. The museum’s marketing director Grant O’Neill said the museum had intended to hold an award and open mic night. However, with lockdown preventing any large gatherings, the event was cancelled. “Unfortunately, Covid threw a spanner in the works, and with the lockdown restrictions continuing to restrict the way we can run, we decided that we cannot hold an awards night and reading as planned,” Mr O’Neill said. “However, despite this, we had more entries this year than last, which was good to see, and the work was excellent.” Drew Bryenton’s composition Still Standing was the overall winner, with second place award to Paula Moros’ Bradley’s Landing. The third place-getter

was Jel Davenport’s My Soul Has Settled; the judges gave special mention to Joan Brown’s work The Kaipara Harbour. ¢

Mayor’s Message Kia ora, Vaccination rates and Covid Alert Levels Congratulations to people in Kaipara District who’ve responded to the Kaipara Call To Arms and have rolled up their sleeves to get vaccinated in the last two weeks. More than 70% of all eligible Kaipara people have now had either one or both of their vaccines. It’s good to see this. However, with nearly 30% of Kaipara people who have not at all been vaccinated there is a large number of us who may be vulnerable when the virus comes here, which isn’t so good.

about where they’re permitted to shop or get vaccines or be tested, etc. Through all this I have been advocating for better services for Kaiwaka and Mangawhai people who’ve been badly served and so I’m pleased to see the authorities are making improvements now.

These are tricky times. There’s a major vaccination drive taking place because prevention is better than cure. I’m vaccinated for the sake of my family and the people who can’t get vaccinated (such as young children) as I want there to be fewer people spreading the virus when it’s here. And it’s nearly here, whether you believe it or Even if Alert Levels ease off again or not. The more of us who are vaccinated get replaced by some other system the less trouble there will be ahead. I for explaining the risk level in the want a future we’re all able to share, community, the need for vaccination one without the current restrictions and testing services that are close and where we can gather again safely; by for Kaipara people needs to be vaccinations are the best path we have addressed. So I’ve advocated for more mobile everyone and the tomorrows of us all. vaccination vans to be here in Kaipara I encourage others to do the same. Icy mists enshroud, where shadows walk and nothing else; an immensity of hush, deep as dreamless dark. Until the summer when the heathaze pauses, breathless. Festival of fabric arts u by Andy Bryenton

The Otamatea Quilters group has used the downtime of lockdown to bring to fruition the full intricacy of the fabric arts, gathering for an exhibition at The Kauri Museum for Labour Weekend.

p The state of the quilters’ art is on display in Matakohe this month and next, as the Otamatea Quilters exchange charitable work for pure artistry

The exhibition will be on public display for a month. It is the culmination of many hours of painstaking work for the quilters, who bring fresh perspectives to this ancient handcraft, transcending its origins as a homemaker’s necessity and turning it into fine art. “Community quilts are at the heart of the exhibition, with all the materials being donated by the quilters,” says museum marketing director Grant O’Neill. “The Otamatea Quilters choose an organisation to donate quilts to, and over the past four years have made quilts for STAND, the Children’s Health Camp in Whangārei, and the Plunket Society who give the quilts to young families in need.”

The list does not stop there. Otamatea’s quilting artisans have also fashioned warm and practical quilts for the new Maungaturoto dementia unit. At the other end of the spectrum of human age, they have also donated tiny quilts for premature and newborn babies. The St John Woolly Express programme has also received support. The forthcoming exhibition spans the range of quilting arts, from entirely handmade heirloom pieces completed in the traditional style to innovations made possible by modern sewing machine technology. Patterns and themes range from geometric to floral and avant-garde. The display is on from Labour Weekend October 22 to November 21. ¢

Hikurangi Substation gets an upgrade Our Hikurangi substation was built back in the 1960’s to service the small rural population at the time. Since then we’ve added new lines and new capacity as the population in the area has grown. Fast forward to 2021 and some of the equipment including the transformer and switchboard had reached end of life, and were in need of replacement. The growth in the area also meant we needed to upgrade the substation with new larger transformers, doubling the capacity of the substation to meet current and future growth.

The switchboard, which takes power from the substation to the seven feeders that supply the surrounding area, has been replaced with new equipment that is safer to operate and maintain. The building was extended to make room for the new switch board and the transformers have been installed with large concrete bunds as required for earthquake and environmental considerations. This project will cost $4.8 million and has taken 12 months. The new transformer arrived on site last week and it will be livened by the end of October.

“When I was nine years old at kura kaupapa, a teacher asked us to write down our dream aspirations and I wrote that I wanted to enter a university, help people, and get them better. My Dad stored that piece of paper in a file and I found it in my last year of nursing training. I realized that was exactly what I was doing with my life.” “I had previously lost motivation. I had dropped out of school at 15 and had a baby at 21, but then I was ready to set a new life path and have a career. When I moved up here to look after my father, I discovered the foundation course for nursing, updated my basic skills then went on to the degree.” “I’m now a community nurse for Otangarei Trust and I utilize all the content and practices of our training to reach out to our patients and community. Our lecturers and all the NorthTec support systems were absolutely there for us and the whole learning environment there warms my heart. Our training gave us a really good ground knowledge about health conditions and medication, but it’s on the job that you really learn rapport with patients.” “My work as a community nurse is all about building relationships and trust with our people in their own home environment where we can pinpoint their health and well-being needs. It’s a much-needed role because many of our people are too whakama (shy) to go and see mainstream health professionals.” “My longer-term dream is to become a nurse practitioner and lecturer, and after further training from my people, incorporate the teaching of Rongoā Maori and fulfil the aspirations of my nine-year-old self. Meanwhile, I’m learning on the job every day and getting a more comprehensive view of the detriments of our health system and the inequities in our community, and I’m keen to help improve that.” Hanibrez Sipu Bachelor of Nursing - Graduate

A local Dargaville metalworker has turned industry into art, having been accepted to compete in a prestigious United States-based copper sculpting competition.

Major restoration of the former bush campsite has been in the works as plans come to fruition for a major, communitybeneficial rehabilitation and healing centre. Founders Ray and Janet Curle are pleased to see their work translating into bricks-and-mortar gains. “An appeal for funds towards restoring the schoolhouse, the equine mentoring headquarters, was very successful, and now the focus moves toward finishing the p Hard work by volunteers and donations from well-wishers have both contributed to the restoration work happening at necessary accommodation Arapohue’s rural retreat centre buildings,” said Ray and Janet. “Provision has been coming in, project- cottage. Learn sign language for life

u by Andy Bryenton

The Department of Conservation and Toyota are joining forces to offer a green-space learning prize to local schools.

u by Andy Bryenton

A local sign language tutor is bringing a new approach to learning New Zealand’s third official language to Kaipara, offering classes in Dargaville and Maungaturoto. Eddie Hokianga is a strong advocate for trilingual fluency in te reo Māori, English and New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL). He has turned his hearing impairment into a positive for the community by spreading the message and helping people learn to sign. “There are many reasons to learn NZSL,” says Eddie. “NZSL is used by people for different purposes. For example, people come to learn NZSL to communicate with deaf people as part of their careers, or to better communicate with friends and family.” He also says that there exists an urgent need for more trilingual interpreters in Aotearoa. Māori deaf want better communication access with their whānau, and only a small number of people can sign, translate and communicate in Te Reo Māori this way. The term for signing in te reo is Māori Ringa Tohu Reo. However, Eddie predominantly teaches newcomers the classic New Zealand Sign Language lexicon. “People from all walks of life come to learn NZSL. From young to old, we have had teachers, police, medical personnel, councillors and a mayor, as well as a local MP, learn NZSL with us.”

p Dargaville Primary School won a school garden via Rabobank; now Toyota and DOC have a similar prize up for grabs

p Students of sign language practise their forms; New Zealand’s third official language is getting a boost from local classes this summer

Recently, the Lottery Grants Board gave a partial grant to Deaf Action NZ. It will enable Eddie, and his colleagues, to teach classes throughout Te Tai Tokerau for the next 12 months. Classes in Dargaville and Maungaturoto are starting very soon, in late October. Those who wish to sign up and learn should visit the website eddie.nz to enrol. “Anyone can join our classes to learn,” says Eddie. “Give it a go.” ¢

The Kiwi Guardians contest is a simple one. It asks parents and children to explain why their school should receive a $5,000 grant to build an interactive green classroom — a garden area to nurture growing things and the next generation of kaitiaki. Learning through interaction with school vegetable gardens, horticulture programmes and the raising of native seedlings is a big part of the curriculum for many of the Kaipara’s young students. Dargaville Intermediate School and Ruawai Kindergarten achieved Enviro Gold status for their efforts. Dargaville Primary School won a contest similar to this one via Rabobank and now enjoys an outdoor garden area. “It’s really special that so many Kiwi kids have chosen to get out into nature and learn about how important protecting our environment is as part of Kiwi

Guardians. So we are excited to continue to encourage this kaitiakitanga,” says Toyota New Zealand’s general manager of marketing, Andrew Davis. “Planting trees, shrubs and even veggies is a great way to start a lifelong journey of appreciating and protecting New Zealand’s environment,” said DOC director Geoff Ensor. The partnership between DOC and Toyota goes deeper than one providing vehicles for the other. Their Kiwi Guardians programme has been up and running since 2016. It features more than 120 activities for students to try in the classroom setting or at home, earning medals as they go. To win a green space prize, parents are encouraged to visit facebook.com/ kiwiguardians, tag their favourite local school and give a reason why they should receive a $5,000 garden. ¢

BUSINESS PROFILE

Water where it’s needed most by Andy Bryenton

Ray and Heather Juretich have been delivering water to people in the Kaipara’s rural hinterland for 35 years through all kinds of seasonal conditions. When the big dry of summer begins to bite, they are the ones people trust. “My father used to own the business, back in the 1980s, when he bought the water carrying operations from the old dairy company,” says Heather. “We worked for him and then moved up to being the owners ourselves.” It’s a job that’s all about people. Those who have been saved from empty tanks by Dargaville Water Carriers, the trading name of Dargaville Haulage, are grateful that there’s a professional company providing this vital service in the region. “We’ve got some great customers,” says Ray. “We appreciate their loyalty, and we always do our best for them.” That means investing in full accreditation from the Ministry of Health, with regular checks to ensure that the water they deliver is as fresh and healthy as anything that comes out of a city tap. This year, it also means investing in new technology, with a new Mercedes truck taking over duties as the power behind Kaipara water deliveries in 2021. The big M-B Actros

hauls a specially designed tanker trailer, outfitted for the job by one of Dargaville’s top metalworkers and fabricators, Jay Juretich, son of Ray and Heather. With summer on the horizon, it’s time to think about those tank levels and plan ahead. The Dargaville Water Carriers team suggest that if your tank is less than a metre from the bottom, it’s prudent to call and book a delivery. When you do, take stock of the access ways to the tank and down the driveway. Ray reports that many first-time callers or those new to the area may not realise the restrictions on manoeuvring a large, fully laden tanker of H2O. Sometimes a spot of pruning and chopping is necessary in a tight squeeze. When you see the bright blue truck out on the road, bearing the Dargaville Haulage and Dargaville Water Carriers names, it’s likely that another household is about to be saved from the big dry. They’ll be out there this summer, ensuring that nobody goes thirsty.

Baylys Beach access closed Earlier this month, an extreme rain event at Baylys Beach, followed by immediate periods of further wet weather, saw significant damage inflicted on the beach access at the bottom of the catchment. This included major erosion to the stream and the resulting exposure of several retaining structures. The footpath was also damaged, as was the road leading to the beach access. Engineers assessed the site on the Friday (08 October) and their initial report gave our maintenance team some immediate remedial options that we will implement as soon as possible. This includes installing rock spalls at the entrance, along the edge of the stream. Our contractors will then backfill the area with compacted lime rock. Lime rock is cohesive and will provide better resistance to any future weather impacts in the short to medium term. That work is expected to take 5 to 10 working days weather dependent, and the beach access will reopen after that. Until this work is complete, the area is not safe for beach access and remains closed. Please exercise caution and do not attempt access by vehicle. We are still investigating the area. These works are carried out under ‘Section 330 - Emergency works and power to take preventive or remedial action, of the Resource Management Act 1991’ under delegated authority of Kaipara District Council. In the longer term, there is also a stormwater project planned for Baylys Beach, programmed for January 2022. The work is funded under the current Long Term Plan and incorporates enhancing the stream and creating approximately half an hectare of wetland in Chases Gorge. Planting for the wetland is planned to take place in Autumn 2022. The aim of the project is to reduce and slow the amount of surface water flowing down through the catchment area, and by doing so, minimise the roadside discharge of stormwater. It does not seek to protect the road corridor, beach access, or potential unstable land downstream from Chases Terrace. The new wetland is located on private land and a covenant agreement is required to allow for planting and maintaining the wetland area. Kaipara District Council is currently negotiating with the landowner to begin the work.

Customer Perception survey Our third edition of the customers perceptions survey is available on our website kaipara.govt.nz. The survey, undertaken four times a year, gets feedback direct from customers about areas we can improve on, as well as measuring against our targets set in our Annual and Long Term Plans. We’ve seen marked success in our resource consent process, park facilities, and libraries. Surveys are undertaken via telephone, mail and online. If you do get asked to take the survey, please do, as your feedback helps us to improve our service.

Pahi wharf continues at pace With the handrail work now complete, the Huband crew have been working at the end of the wharf recently, preparing the connection for the new gangway, and replacing pile caps and stringers. Last week saw the third and final pile being driven, concluding the heavy machinery work for this part of the project. The structural steel required for the gangway connection is being fabricated in Dargaville by Greg Smith Engineering, with installation planned in a week or so. Images: At the end of the wharf you can see one of the team in the heavy rain, undertaking pile set measurements for the project engineer. Three piles have been driven in the last fortnight. The computer generated image shows what the wharf will look like once complete. There’s still a bit to do! Bellingham Marine are building the pontoon and gangway in their Auckland workshop. These components will arrive on site sometime in late November (pending COVID restrictions). The project is currently on track to be complete before the end of the year. The wharf remains closed during construction, with the boat ramp open for launching. The wharf upgrade is part of Kaipara KickStart, supported by PGF funding from Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit.

The Gallic grin factor u by Andy Bryenton

There’s a lot of heavy-duty engineering involved in making a car truly fast by modern standards. Turbos that can hoover up unwitting livestock, more radiators than a public school block; is it really necessary? Admittedly, some of the truly great cars of history have been the fastest of their day. The McLaren F1. The Ford GT40. Even greater, are those that have proven you don’t have to blitz the sound barrier with your eyeballs squished by G-forces to have a good time. The MX-5 comes to mind or the old Golf GTI. However, I put it to you that the masters of this idea are neither the Germans nor the Japanese. When it comes to greeting weird automotive ideas as a bit of a chuckle, accepted with a wry grin and shrug, the trophy goes to France. We could talk about the bonkers Renault Clio V6 hatch, where they ripped out the back seats to add more engine, or the Peugeot p Parisian style and electric, high-range practicality make the new 208 a sensible choice that’s still loads of fun to drive 505 V6 when they took a small, reliable little four-door made to survive in a supercharged John Cooper Works Mini spice. Forget the world’s woes and mow u by Andy Bryenton

There’s a tactic for clearing the fog from your brain and de-stressing, which the initiated call mindfulness. Now there’s a new way to forget Covid conspiracies, politics and petrol prices and live in the mindful moment. Alright, perhaps it’s not exactly new. However, those who enjoy a quiet rumination or two swear that one of the best venues for doing so is on top of a ride-on mower. Think about it for a second. You’re outdoors in the great green sanctity of the back yard, and you’re unlikely to be disturbed, as you’re taking care of a vital chore. It’s just you, the canvas of the lawn, the brush of a finely tuned machine; it even beats the old WC, as nobody is going to come knocking with urgent needs to take over. The average dunny does not come equipped with a cup holder, either. Of course, this time to philosophise and speculate on such matters as dream All Blacks back lines from history, how to solve the pandemic, and what real-life jobs certain politicians should have to try their hand at only works if your mower is working smoothly, and is right for the job. Otherwise, rather than a clear and Zenlike mind, you’ll end up with oily, bashed fingers and a temper shorter than a runover garden gnome. There are so many tools to choose from that setting up a shed of the right stuff seems like preparing the tools for a complicated spot of brain surgery. Different mowers are best for different

yards, from the mighty zero turn monsters of the open turf to nimble little batterypowered push mowers and powerful beasts meant to traverse hills and slopes like army rangers on manoeuvres. Then there’s the range of other tools for edge trimming, weed whacking, brush cutting, pest spraying and water blasting. Each one has its niche, and this is entirely down to the fact that all homes are different. Therefore, what’s needed most is someone who has mindfully meditated on which ones fit which kinds of section and garden. A guru, if you will, but not in the religious sense. Such people do exist, and in Dargaville, they’re found at Godfrey’s Chainsaws and Mowers. This time of year, they are usually out there demonstrating new technology to potential customers. Trevor, for example, has been busy showing future buyers the power of his new Hansa wood chipper, which might come in handy at your place. Others on the team are readying tools for spring and assembling new stock. If you’d like some peaceful time to ponder life, the universe and everything, away from the worries of the world, talk to Trevor and the team and book some time with your garden. ¢
