Beach strategy looks ahead

Rescue service appeal begins

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Paul Campbell

Ahead of a busy Labour Weekend, the Kaipara District Council, local police and the Department of Conservation joined forces to present a united strategy for the safe use of Ripro Beach.

The Northland Rescue Helicopter annual appeal is now underway with an acknowledgement that in “tough economic times, we understand people can only donate what they can.”

Concerns had flared after a mass influx of off-road drivers during previous holiday weekends. The strategy, which saw a video released and teams meeting and greeting tourists at beach entrances, is the template for how local authorities will manage the coming summer. “We’re going to be engaging with the public, and speaking about safety on the beach,” said Dargaville police detective Kiley Dalbeth. “At Baylys Beach and Glinks Gully we have traffic restrictions.” Detective Dalbeth reiterated that standard road rules apply for the whole length of the beach, which gives the police a wide mandate to crack down on dangerous driving. “Ripiro Beach in a unique environment,” said DOC Kauri Coast operations manager Stephen Soole. “It’s home to many endangered species, including dotterel, seals and penguins. While it may be your playground when you’re visiting here, it is home for many of these species which are threatened by human activity.” As well as making it clear to beach drivers that the fragile dune surfaces are out of bounds and good conduct

“We are so thankful for the backing and loyalty we receive from Northlanders year in and year out,” says Northern Rescue CEO, Ian MacPherson. In previous appeals, the trust has raised more than $300,000 but considers that economic conditions have taken a downturn and remain hopeful. Bike park brain teasers u by Andy Bryenton

A quiz night organised to raise funds for the development of the Kauri Coast Mountain Bike Park was well attended and hotly contested as riders prepare for Labour Weekend action.

p Auction action added to the quiz night fun as Chris Fife helped raise money for the Kauri Coast Mountain Bike Park

The old post office building and clock town on Hokianga Road was offered by Greenways Trust to host the quiz, which had a distinctly spooky theme thanks to its Friday, October 13 date, and the proximity of Halloween. Best-dressed ghouls John ‘the butcher’ Pickworth and Donna ‘The witch’ Shadick took home prizes for their gruesome fancy dress, ahead of a rogues gallery of vampires, zombies, supervillains and monsters. “There were a few surprises in the questions, especially a whole round of mathematics,” says Rebecca Eve, a member of the winning team on the night. Other patrons cheered or groaned accordingly as facts about child celebrities, polar bears, Russian

literature and more saw the points add up. At the end of the night, local auctioneer Chris Fife applied his skills, fetching top dollar for a variety of mystery prizes. The entire event was to aid further construction at the Kauri Coast Mountain Bike Park in Babylon Coast Road, just outside of Dargaville. Several downhill tracks have been cut and compacted by volunteers, and bathroom facilities have been emplaced thanks to the local Lions Club. The park will be a major drawcard for outdoor adventure seekers this summer, with a shuttle service running thanks to local cycle shop Time To and many more trails planned to expand the fun. ¢

Council report card — Mark Vincent

This week, we continue our report card series from local councillors, following a brief hiatus during the general election. Have you managed to achieve or make progress on your election promises? I don’t recall promising much, as I learnt in my first term that even if I had the greatest idea in the world unless at least half the other people around the council table thought it a great idea too, it would amount to nothing. I did pledge to use my judgement and experience to act in the best long-term interests of the people of the Kaipara District as a whole. I acknowledge the need to preserve the local voice on local issues as I continue to promote the development of strong communities. What have been the obstacles to achieving change? The legal framework local government operates within can result in us having to dance to someone else’s tune. I think many of our seven newly elected members are discovering just how difficult it is to dance a quickstep when the music is a slow waltz. For instance, we had a very successful session at the beginning of the year to agree on our vision and related community outcomes. The challenge for many has been to accept that the operative vision and community outcomes set by the previous

council are in force until the middle of next year. Of course, having had the local government frontal lobotomy helps my understanding and acceptance of the situation. A further obstacle to me getting the council to do what I want is when not enough of my colleagues agree with my view, so I get outvoted. That’s the democratic process. How do you plan to deliver good value for your constituents in the Kaipara District, going forward? I continue to promote the development of strong communities. I think the council of the future will focus more on increasing community capability and capacity so that we can live in the place that we have helped to shape. Also, at any opportunity, I promote the idea of councils supporting not-forprofit groups getting access to external funding (which councils can’t) so that we can have better facilities and services without the ratepayer having to pay every time. I try to stay connected with local communities in the Otamatea Ward by attending meetings of local community groups while I maintain an interest in what is going on across the whole of the district. ¢

Long service honours in Tinopai

Lifetime achievement well earned

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

Tinopai volunteer firefighters met on October 7 to honour their own, with awards presented for many years of service to the local community.

Lions Club member and Dargaville community leader Warren Osbaldiston more than earned his lifetime membership with the Lions, being described as the club’s ‘elder statesman’.

Brigade members gathered at the Tinopai Hall to carry on a tradition of recognition as old as the fire service itself and reinforce the bonds of comradeship that come from serving side by side. Of special note was the presentation of a long-service medal of 14 years to Bob Goodin, who has become a valuable part of the team since arriving from Wellsford’s firefighters. “Since joining the Tinopai fire brigade in 2019, Bob Goodin has been an active member of the team,” said Tinopai fire chief Nigel Bernie. “Whether he is driving the truck, running the pumps or helping tidy the station, he is always willing to help the crew. He also comes armed with plenty of suggestions to help develop the brigade, which are drawn from his previous experience at Wellsford’s volunteer fire brigade.” The New Zealand Fire Brigades Long Service and Good Conduct Medal is awarded to members of Fire and Emergency New Zealand who have completed 14 years of service and whose conduct is of an exceptional standard. Chief Fire Officer Nigel Bernie was pleased to bestow this honour on Bob Goodin, saying the Tinopai fire brigade was proud of his achievement.

A keen sportsman, a teacher for four decades, and a contributor to many community causes, Warren was a dedicated member of the Lions Club in Dargaville, who joined the organisation in 1976. He served as president twice and as club secretary for 20 years in total, also stepping up to the senior role of zone chairman and represented the Dargaville Lions Club at district and nationwide conventions. “Both he and his wife have contributed greatly to the club, in the social side and in community projects,” said fellow Lion Ross Murdoch. This record of long service was widely recognised. In 2005, Warren was awarded one of the highest honours the Lions can bestow, the Melvin Jones Fellowship, named for the originator and founder of Lions International. Like Mr Jones, Mr Osbaldiston wanted to introduce others to the comradeship and goodwill of the Lions, and he sponsored at least 11 new members to join in Dargaville. In 2022, Lions International elected to award Warren Osbaldiston with the only accolade higher than the Melvin Jones Fellowship among their ranks. He was accepted for life membership in 2022

As well as presenting Bob with his medal, there were other long-service awards, ranging from three years to 21 in the fire service. Sam Williams, Kath Sarjean, Nigel Bernie, Faith Edwards, Ioane William, Paula Browne, Wayne Browne, and Robbie Kersey all received accolades for their duration of service to firefighting and the community. ¢

Highway priority in roads submission u by Paul Campbell

Road funding and improvements to SH1 at the Brynderwyns and the link between Warkworth and Whangārei as a strategic priority have been championed by the multi-council Northland Regional Transport Committee in a plea to the new government for significant improvements to Northland’s transport network. In a submission on the Draft Government Policy Statement on Land Transport 2024, committee chair Joe Carr says as a rural region, Northland depends heavily on a fit-forpurpose, sustainable, resilient p The Northland Regional Transport Committee (from left): Cr John Blackwell, (Northland Regional Council) Chair Joe Carr, (NRC), Cr Ash Nayyar (Kaipara and secure land transport District Council), Cr Steve McNally (Far North District Council), Steve infrastructure, particularly Mutton (Waka Kotahi) and Cr Simon Reid (Whangārei District Council) its local and state highway Chair Carr says the number of crashes roading network. “Without this, Northland will continue to fall resulting in deaths and serious injuries in behind the rest of the country in all four wellbeing Northland was disproportionate, with national areas — social, economic, environmental averages and continued to increase. u by Amy Fifita

The Gumboot Friday Sossie Slammer is on November 3, beginning at 5pm at the Paparoa Showgrounds, 2062 Paparoa Valley Road, to fundraise for child mental health services. “I see how much children need counselling, and this initiative provides support to everybody that needs it. Having that support and feeling that someone actually cares makes all the difference,” says organiser Jessica Brennan. Jessica began the Sossie Slammer event last year in support of Gumboot Friday, an initiative to provide free counselling services to young people 25 years and younger. Local musician Brian Baker performed at the previous event and will return this year. “It is a wonderful event. Last year, we had more than 200 people attending the event, and a lot of money was raised for this excellent cause,” says performance organiser Brian. The event will have music, games, prizes, raffles, a bouncy castle, various stalls from local businesses and a sausageeating competition. “The sausage-eating competition is a real laugh. There is also music, and we are having three acts on,” said Brian.

p Brian Baker will be performing at the second Gumboot Friday Sossie Slammer fundraiser in Paparoa

“I am the first act and will be playing an acoustic set, and then we are having a single launch for Whaea G, who is releasing a fantastic waiata on Spotify and the radio that day. The third act is a rough-and-ready blues band called The Gumboot. “It is a very family-orientated evening. It is a cool thing to take your children along for a pleasant Friday evening.” ¢

ALTERATIONS & RENOVATIONS An open potential u by Amy Fifita

Often, the garage is a hidden space for storing the car or placing items that people want out of view, but it can be made into a usable area. Garages are versatile and those fortunate enough to have extra room in that area have the opportunity to create an additional spot for whatever they decide. It could be transformed into a hangout space, a workshop, a gym setup and more. People could even modify to have a car hoist with a collection of the tools and machines necessary to do mechanical work. Once a decision has been made on what the garage will be turned into. A tidyup is likely required, and a bin to clear the clutter for more space. Once a blank canvas has been prepared, the project can begin. For fitness fanatics, a home gym is a desired aspect of the home. Garage floors are designed to be durable and suitable for larger gym equipment and weights. Minor adjustments to the room so the ground is more comfortable when working out. People can be creative

with this idea by adding a fridge for ice-cold beverages, a bench for protein smoothies and a television for anyone wanting to follow their favourite routine on YouTube. Handymen or ladies can use the space as a base to have their tools and machines. Clear the area and get out the tape measure. It would be ideal to make measurements while the car is in its normal spot to gauge how much usable space there is. It is the perfect area for a workbench, and away from the rest of the house, which is good for noisy jobs. It can be a haven for tinkerers to enjoy. Another favourable idea is to make it a space to relax. Sometimes, all it takes is to paint a spare area and add embellishments like a rug, couch, refrigerator and small coffee table. People can go all out and build a wall and door to make the space separate from where the car goes. ¢

Woven rugs and mats made from wool likely came into existence shortly after the domestication of sheep and goats, but it’s a long road from there to modern carpet. The very oldest carpet still in existence is known as the Pazyryk Carpet, and it

was woven in Armenia nearly 1,700 years ago. Roman writer Herodotus praised the ‘people of the Caucasus mountains’ for weaving beautiful rugs with colours that would never fade. The Pazyryk Carpet, despite its tremendous age, is still vividly red, dyed with cochineal, a pigment crushed from insect shells. Carpets were important to various cultures, especially those who travelled or traded. The Mongolian empire of the Khans travelled with carpets to warm and accessorise their yurts, while the image of Arabic carpets set up under tents by an oasis to create an elegant temporary home is familiar to all. Intricate and opulent, hand-woven carpets became valued worldwide, and different cultures from China to Scandinavia put their own mark on the art of weaving. Carpets throughout history can give clues to events and trends through the images and designs they display, tracing the influence of religions, kingdoms and even technologies.

p Intricate hand-woven rugs persist in their popularity despite the rise of manufactured carpets as the standard in western homes

However, as well as being expensive and unique, carpets had another disadvantage when it came to being accepted in the homes of the common person. Up until fairly recent times, cleaning one’s house was a massive chore and only happened once a year in springtime. A permanent carpet couldn’t be taken outdoors to wash and clean. Even the luxury carpets imported by aristocrats took a small army of servants to roll up, move, beat and launder. Two people changed all this. Erastus Bigelow invented the power loom in 1839 and used steam power to weave carpets

faster and less expensively than ever before. Then came Melville Bissell, who invented the carpet sweeper in 1876. Carpets could now be fixed down and cleaned without being moved. Suddenly, the ornate hand-woven rugs of olden times were superseded in the homes of average people by warm, machine-woven carpets, which were easy to maintain, and made easier still when John S Thurman invented the power vacuum; his first models ran on a petrol engine like a motorcycle. Walter Griffiths added the electric motor, and the rest is history. ¢

Ranger gets electric boost u by Andy Bryenton

The best-selling vehicle in New Zealand is set to get an electric option, with a hybrid plug-in Ranger ute on the horizon from Ford. It comes just in time to wave goodbye to the so-called ‘ute tax’ which so vexed the rural public, but more on that elsewhere. For now, tradespeople, farmers and those who love the original big Ford utility will be looking with interest at a machine that promises lower emissions and better economy and more torque than the alldiesel variant on sale today. “We are very excited to soon be offering the Ranger Plug-In Hybrid to New Zealand customers,” said Ford New Zealand managing director Simon Rutherford. “New Zealanders are rapidly transitioning to electrified vehicle solutions. The Ranger plug-In hybrid will play a key role not only in Ford’s global sustainability efforts to reduce emissions from transportation, but also in helping meet the varied needs of our valued customers here in New Zealand. We anticipate that a more sustainable, low emissions solution will appeal across retail, business, rural and urban customers alike.” Electricity combines with 2.3 litres of turbocharged petrol power to deliver a raked towing capacity of 3,500kg, fourwheel drive, and the claim of more torque

than the big turbo diesel, which has become a favourite around New Zealand. As a plug-in hybrid, the new Ranger will allow for approximately 45 kilometres of fuel-free driving in full electric mode. As far as looks go, Ford has resisted the urge to create a retro-futurist rocketship or an edgy design study like Tesla’s Cybertruck. The hybrid Ranger looks like a Ranger, which is smart thinking when you are already the top-selling ute in a vicious market. The appeal of this machine may well be that it doesn’t wear its electric heart on its sleeve and instead presents itself as what it is intended to be — a stablemate of Ford’s great all-rounder. One very handy addition to the mix is the inclusion of Pro Power Onboard, which effectively makes the whole ute into a large, quiet generator. Power outlets embedded in the tray and cabin will allow hybrid Ranger drivers to use electric equipment on the go, charge up the batteries of laptops and power tools, and never be far from a plug. There’s a year to wait, until 2025, before Ford says the first of these utes will hit the road locally, but it’s expected that they will make quite an impression

p Ford’s Ranger couldn’t be more popular, or could it? A hybrid version will soon deliver more economy and more torque

when they arrive. Customers asked for a solution that would give them the best of both worlds, and this might well be it. This is a premium example of the market naturally filling a gap which government legislation could not account for in terms of the ill-fated ‘ute tax’, recently repealed. ¢
