The Kaipara was well represented in the final awards at this year’s Northland Performing Arts Competitions 62nd Festival of Dance, Music and Speech

In the vocal competition, twenty-six performers were students of Matakohe singing teacher, Maura Flower. “All of my students did really well and the kids were amazing,” says Maura. “However, although it’s lovely to win first place, I emphasise that I just want them all to do their personal best and have fun! “Out of my 26 performers, there were 20 adults and six children and we came away with eight first placings.

“Young Molly Curnow, who’s not quite 10, came first in two categories. Molly, who played the ever-optimistic red head, Annie, in Otamatea Repertory Theatre’s recent production, was also placed second for a duet piece with her partner, Kayla Joyce, and some minor placings for her other entries. “It’s a huge competition and competitors come from all over, including Kerikeri, Auckland, Whangarei and the Kaipara, so it’s really exciting that we did so well. The other first place getters were Chiannae Smart, Amy and Mya Lawrence, Anna-Marie Cutts, Kathy Bygrave, Emma Rankin and Carine Lange.”

“You get a lot of information from the judge about what you need to do — what you are doing wrong, what you are doing right and whether the song right for your voice. It was a very good experience,” says Carine.

Anna-Marie Cutts, is a seasoned singer and came home with a first placing, three thirds and a highly recommended while Tina McCullough entered eight sections, which included a duet with Anna-Marie Cutts and she also performed with Ruawai group, ACE Singers, who received a very highly commended.

Maura adds, that in terms of a pastime, singing is becoming increasingly popular among adults. “Also, you can do it anywhere and it is relatively inexpensive — you don’t need to buy an instrument or other gear because you were born with it — your instrument is your voice.”

Keep up with Kumarani Dargaville’s Daniel Wade and Sam La Hood, along with Kaikohe’s Samuel Tzikoucos, stood out and cleaned up at the Northland Regional Unicycle Championships, held at Kaikohe. The two Kaipara representatives are involved with Dargaville’s Kumarani Creative Centre, where they learnt to unicycle. “They are both going down to Taupo at Labour Weekend to compete in the National Unicycling Competitions,” says proud Kumarani manager, Jenny Huriwai. “The nationals are a build-up to the International Competition in Italy in July next year.” Daniel was placed first in three categories; long jump, high jump and flatland and in the street event, he came in second. Sam was placed third in both the flatland and street events. The pair will head to the National Unicycle Championship in Taupo at Labour Weekend and have their sights set on Italy’s international competition in July next year. Meanwhile, for youth who are keen to learn the unicycle, Kumarani Creative Centre’s school holiday programme will run from Monday, 10 October, to Friday, 14 October. Only 12 spaces are available for this, so interested children need to register now. Ongoing events for the centre include; the after school circus skills programme for children age five to 13 years, adult classes on Wednesday evenings, between 5:30 and 6:30pm and fire workshops on Wednesday nights from 7 until 9pm. On the last Friday of every month, Kumarani hold their Open Stage Night here at

Gifted kids need your help The Northern Wairoa is in danger of losing its Gifted Kids Programme unless the scheme can find a much needed financial injection, says the chairman of the Northern Wairoa Principals’ Association, Vern Stevens. The association manages the programme, which is based at Selwyn Park School and is open to all primary and intermediate school children in the area. “The programme used to receive funding through the Ministry of Education,” explains Mr Stevens, who is also principal at Selwyn Park School. “However, since the funding was withdrawn, units around the country have struggled to continue such as the programme at Tikipunga Primary School, which will close at the end of the year.

the centre — a casual evening that starts at 6.30pm with a shared kai and from 7pm people get to show off their circus skills. The Kumarani Creative Centre’s Kai Iwi Lakes festival is coming up in January next year and they are currently looking for some shade sources. Last year, the festival was cancelled due to lack of weather protection, so marquees, tents and other coverings are urgently required.

“We were lucky this year to receive funds from the principals’ association and the Kauri Coast Fishing contest but we can’t count on these next year and so far, we haven’t secured another source.” Deb Green teaches two GKP classes at Dargaville and explains how important it is to bring like minds — gifted children — together one day a week to learn through the specialised curriculum. “There are four parts to the programme and in the first part we look at giftedness — how they may be a little bit different to their peers and how to deal with it. Many don’t think they’re gifted, so we help them understand that they have a different brain to others and I also have students with ADHD and Aspergers, so it’s helping them as well. “These kids also have a really high emotional intelligence. They’re the ones that are kind and really care about one another, so we do a lot of work around this. Despite being from different schools, they all get on so well.” Thirty six students from the Northern Wairoa participate in the GKP, 18 in each class. The programme focusses on in-depth thinking and students are able to explore their own individual talents in a supportive environment. If you can help contact Vern Stevens at Selwyn Park Primary. Keith’s special surprise Greener pastures for carver Keith Quinn called into Dargaville’s Norfolk Court Rest Home earlier this month, the day before he was due to commentate at the Rugby World Cup game in Whangarei. The legendary rugby commentator spent 45 minutes greeting and talking with a very animated audience. “I shook his hand and said, ‘Welcome, welcome, welcome. The All Blacks are going to win’,” said a very happy John Passell, a resident of ten years. Caregiver, Joi Jeffery, helped organise the special occasion and says everyone has been willing to help out. The Northland Rugby Union sent an autographed rugby ball and rugby jerseys, which the residents wore during Keith’s, visit along with All Blacks caps. “He sang a song,” says Joi. “And he had all the residents laughing and joking and he asked them about their caps. It was really nice of him to come. Adidas has supplied Norfolk Court with posters, which are proudly displayed throughout the home and staff and residents have been making their own tributes. Black and white streamers, collages, photos, painted flags and dressed-up soft toys line the walls, dining room, lounge and halls. “The residents are really getting into it,” adds Joi. “On opening night they had a beer or shandy and hot dogs, chips and sauce in ‘takeaway’ boxes. “For all the All Blacks games we have chips and dip and for the final we’ll have hamburgers and chips in boxes — like they’re at the game. It’s been great and everyone has put in a lot of work.”

One of New Zealand’s first Ngāi Tahu licenced Pounamu artisans has travelled north to make his home in Dargaville with wife, Amy, and young son, Ezra. On Monday, 3 October, Paul Graham officially opened his new studio to the public at 4 Murdoch Street on State Highway 12, and is hoping that locals and visitors will ‘come and have a nosey’. “I’ve been carving since 2002 but last year I became a licenced carver, which means that the stone I carve now is all traceable back to its origin,” explains Paul. “It’s all part of the new legal system that separates it from black market or imported jade, instead, the pounamu comes direct from Ngāi Tahu, down south.” Paul, who trained in his hometown of Gisborne in 2002 says his family’s decision to move for north was a lifestyle choice. “I’ve actually been coming up here since I was a kid. My uncle, Mike Mudford, started the Kauriland Skills Centre and I’ve been involved with them since I was a young fella.” The talented artist says he “kinda just fell into” carving but now his art is a huge passion and “despite the hard yards, carving just gets into your blood.” “I was courier driving and I used to pick up parcels from this couple who asked me if I wanted to learn. It was cool because all their equipment is set up for left-handers and I’m lefthanded, so it was easy for them to teach me.”

Paul trained at Gisborne’s Stone Studio for three-and-a-half years and spent a further three years building up his business while he completed a sport and leisure degree at university. Nine years later and Paul has been commissioned to do carvings for the Waitangi Grounds, Te Papa and has just finished 50 carvings for South Africa’s Rugby World Cup team and officials. “For now, I’m keen to get established and get to know the community. I can do custom designs and people are welcome to call in and see how everything works.” Paul’s website is www.jade-jewelry.co.nz and if you are wondering, the American spelling of ‘jewelry’ equals more hits.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

The first wave of settlement

photo courtsey Albertland Heritage Centre

by Paul Campbell

The settlement of the Kaipara abounds with stories of hardships and difficulties overcome by the first wave of Europeans, the Albertlanders, in the second half of the 19th century. Among them is the account recorded by the Wilson and Trounson families, who set out for the northern reaches of the Kaipara from Helensville, after journeying overland from Auckland. The family names are still strong today and their descendants will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of Albertland at Easter, next year. The original settlers were rowed from Helensville to Pahi by two Maori oarsmen, and the journey is described in records housed at the Albertland Heritage Centre in Wellsford.

‘Several days were occupied on the journey in the open boat. A night was spent at Shelly Beach. It was with greatest delay and difficulty that they succeeded in crossing the heads where the heavy ocean swell makes a dangerous stretch of water for small boats. They were nearly swamped and had to put back and make several attempts. However, finally the rough water at the entrance was passed without mishap and as the boat ascended the harbour, the beauty of the Kaipara began to unfold, a beauty as yet unspoiled by the clearings and burns of the settlers. ‘It was a sight to excite admiration and

wonder. Nature had donned her best garb to welcome the visitors. The spring of 1862 was especially beautiful and the New Zealand clime was at its best. At various points tributary rivers flowed into the harbour, which was bordered by fine stretches of beach. Many hill slopes rose, forest clad from the water’s edge. The tide flooded the beaches and the neighbouring streams in the glory of the spring sunshine. ‘With evening falling, our pioneers landed at Chief Manukau’s camp at Karakanui and were kindly received.’ After spending the night and being served fish boiled in seawater, and some kumaras, they bartered more for a few of the settlers’ stores, before the journey continued. ‘From this point it was but a short distance to Pahi where the party landed the next day. About half an hour afterwards (probably due to the incoming tide) other boats came in sight carrying settlers who had come via Mangawhai, Kaiwaka and the Otamatea. It was nearly a dead heat between these widely separated parties. ‘Tents were pitched and the English folk made themselves as comfortable as possible under camp conditions — and the township which sprang up presently began to wear quite an animated appearance. More tents and whares sprang up. ‘The stay at Pahi was destined to be more than a mere picnic. The settlers’ Crown land grants were not yet surveyed, and three or four months were to elapse before the settlers could proceed to their sections.’ Looking back from today it seems fair to assume that 150 years ago, Pahi was a much more bustling community than it is now — perhaps with the exception of the frenetic activity that takes place just once each year — on Pahi Regatta Day in January.

Kaipara Community Health Trust

Important Changes to the Health Shuttle Service Changes to the Health Shuttle service will be introduced during September. The Health Shuttle will focus on: 1. Helping the whole community (Ruawai North) access health services in Whangarei 2. Helping rural people access health services in Dargaville. For bookings phone Te Ha Oranga 439 3013.

What this means is: The Health Shuttle will no longer be collecting people within the Dargaville Township and taking them to appointments in Dargaville.

So if you live within the Dargaville Township area i.e. inside the 100km/hour speed limits, Ritches Town Service can help you, they have reduced their fares to $10 return trip, on their scheduled timetable route. YES they are able to collect you from your home if you ring 439 6306 and make a booking, it would be helpful to align your appointments within their scheduled bus route. Working together we hope to be able to meet the transport needs of our community.

A special assembly was held at Ruawai Primary School for the presentation of their Northland Regional Council (NRC), Environmental Curriculum Award and a cheque for $977.50 presented by Environmental Educational Officer for NRC, Susan Botting and Councillor Graham Ramsey. Two senior students Kaitlynn Langton-Scott and Sophie Blundell created and presented a power point of the schools journey through the transformation from a grass patch to present gardens. The school garden committee gave Ms Botting and Councillor Ramsey a garden tour following the cheque presentation.

“You have now entered the third leg of the trifecta of helping all of Northland’s district councils,” was how Paul Cresswell’s new role was described to him on his first day at the Kaipara District Council. The new management accountant has previously held similar roles at the Far North and Whangarei district councils and says the diversity of activity in local government has continued to interest him throughout his career. “I guess I can nearly call myself a Northlander,” says Paul, whose family moved to the area from Palmerston North when he was in primary school. “My wife Sue and I have raised our four children from our Whangarei home and our family is deeply committed to Northland and our community. Sue is the Whangarei Netball Centre’s Administrator and she and our three girls are all very involved as players, coaches and umpires. “Our son, Christopher, is a member of our local volunteer fire brigade and although he’s currently away studying, he turns on his pager as soon as he arrives home for breaks. For me, with my accounting background, I find I am regularly involved in assisting our community groups with their treasury.” Paul says it was while he was away studying, significantly distanced from the coast, that it became evident that Northland, with its diversity of coastline and myriad coastal activities was where he wanted to be. “I dive, fish and use our coastal environment extensively for its recreational attributes. Northland is one of New Zealand’s finest assets

Paul Cresswell — new management accountant for the Kaipara District Council

and I would like to think that it can provide us as residents with the best of lifestyles and opportunities to prosper forward.” Paul adds that with his commitment to Northland and understanding of what makes local government tick, he hopes to be able to play an active part in Kaipara’s contribution to Northland.

The Central Hotel’s new manager, Ray McLean, is keen to get the party started this spring. Ray joined the Central team last year as a barman but since being promoted to manager a month ago, he has been busy organising a new line of entertainment and ensuring the hotel’s facilities are up to scratch. Friday night entertainment will now be a mix of old and new, alternating between Karaoke, with Kim and Judy, and DJ Jase. Ray hopes to finalise an entertainment calendar in the coming weeks. “I’ll be speaking to promoters tomorrow and there’ll be more musicians booked as we head into summer,” says Ray. “Keep an eye on our ads in the Lifestyler for the latest music.” Part of this plan, is live acoustic music sessions on Sunday afternoons and, subject to a licence being granted, Ray hopes to establish a beer garden within the current car park. “We also provide lunches and snacks and there is nothing over $16.50,” adds Ray. “The steak sandwich is probably our most popular meal and there’s a gluten-free option available. Friday BBQ lunches — steak, sausages, eggs and salad — are only $12.50. “This is a good place to work and our regular customers are great. We’ve also been fortunate to have a lot of tourists stay and enjoy meals here during the Rugby World Cup. “For now, I’m looking forward to finalising the entertainment and getting prepared for the busy summer months.”

Arapohue’s big show day

Arapohue School is hosting its Show Day on October 29 and they want everybody to know about it and be part of this fun day out. The small, rural school is determined to keep their Show Day alive but interest has been declining in recent years. “I just can’t bear the thought of calf club dying, so my husband and I rear ten calves and one lamb,” says board of trustees chairperson, Daff Adams. “My husband’s employers, Clive and Lynne McDermott, have generously offered to sponsor Arapohue pupils who live in town, by providing food and housing for their calves. “Eventually, I would like to take this idea to other farming communities because calf clubs

have been an integral part of our rural life for 120 years. “I’m quite passionate about this, after growing up on a dairy farm I know that children learn commitment, compassion, empathy for animals, stock and farm skills and a different way of communicating through rearing animals. Children also learn behavioural skills and how to act around animals, which is an opportunity that town-based children would otherwise miss out on. Show Day, which many of us will remember as Calf Club, will be catered for by Arapohue Country Kitchen and include fun games, quickfire raffles and grocery raffles.

Rubbish Dump Revival What started as a school project a few years ago called, ‘What would you like to see improved on your road or area’, by then Ruawai College student Renee Gatehouse, has now turned into Ruawai residents reclaiming the old rubbish dump site at Te Kowhai Road, Ruawai and replanting itwith native bush. The project is now being lead by Renee’s grandparents Noelene and Bryce Gatehouse. “Renee decided that something needed to be done — the dump was closed but was just sitting there uncovered,” said Noelene. “Drainage soil was donated by Renee’s dad, Paul Gatehouse, firstly covered up the dump before the planting could start. Kaipara District Council visited the site and donated 100 trees to kick-start the project. “Over the previous years we have donated a good majority of the trees with a Ruawai College Horticulture class planting 200 native plants. “Just recently we donated another 194 plants that were planted by members of the Ruawai Lions Club. We have made good progress Bryce and Noelene Gatehouse in the last year and have work hard planting trees to tidy up Ruawai’s old dump site to get it under control. “Amongst the plants are three big kauri native bush reserve, something Te Kowhai Road trees. Hopefully everything will keep growing residents will appreciate in the future,” said and in a few years time we will have a pleasant Noelene.

nother step in the rapid progress of Dargaville is being made by the newly formed Northern Wairoa Brick Company. They have acquired the property between the gas site and the Nursing Home in Victoria Street and are making preparations for the early manufacture of bricks. Mr. F. A. Jones and his staff of workmen are now busily engaged erecting a large building to accommodate the machinery about to arrive on the S.S. Ihamata in the course of the next few days. The supplying of locally made bricks will fill a long felt want in this fast growing district. We wish the company every success.

Local company forms strategic partnership

Dargaville book worms Dargaville Primary School students have been learning to love books — or love them even more! The school’s annual book week involved a range of activities designed to encourage enthusiasm in even the most reluctant reader and promote reading for life. On the Monday of book week, illustrator and storyteller, Lyn Kreigler, visited the school and spent time with all the classes. She told stories using her puppets and talked about a new book she is working on with the late Barry Crump’s son, Martin.

Local Kaipara based company NorthSouth Multi Media Ltd have entered into a strategic partnership with Country99TV, in a move that will be mutually beneficial for both parties. Country99TV is New Zealand’s only television channel dedicated to rural New Zealand and NorthSouth Multi Media is a Dargaville business, which publishes the Kaipara Lifestyler and four rural publications. “It’s a win-win situation for both of us,” says NorthSouth Multi Media’s managing director, Allan Mortensen. “They were looking for a print media company that had serious penetration into the rural market and every month our publications are delivered to 150,000 rural delivery addresses around New Zealand, including Northland, Waikato, Taranaki /Manawatu and Christchurch and they will now carry the only hard copy available of Country99TV’s viewing schedule. “We are quite a way down the road in regard to future digital concepts and online services that our company will be bringing to the market place, and we will now be able to draw on the depth of industry knowledge and expertise in that area that Country99TV has to offer. Also, in this day and age of international multimedia ownership, it is pleasing to know that we have two New Zealand owned companies working and moving forward together. Country99TV’s brand communications manager, Raegen Houldridge, says the new partnership extends their reach into rural New Zealand. “We are dedicated to providing relevant and interesting information from all sectors of the agriculture industry. Our partnership with NorthSouth Multi Media enhances our reach within these communities.

Story telling time during book week at Dargaville Primary School

The father and son Crump team wrote the original ‘Pungapeople’ books, which Lyn Illustrated. Tuesday was parents’ day — a time for parents to come in during school hours and see their children working and reading. This was followed by grandparents’ day, on Wednesday. Thursday was guest reader time and included parents in costume, Mayoress Catherine Tiller and representatives from the fire brigade, Dargaville library and the police. Friday wound up an activity filled week with a dress-up day and parade which included Dargaville Kindergarten. The colourful students and teachers performed a rehearsed dance before a good turn-out of family and friends.

“It also allows a direct feed of relevant information between parties to ensure that all communities are well informed and well entertained. “We’re also a private company, backed by rural investors and are dedicated to providing our viewers a rich selection of the very best agribusiness, rural lifestyle, equine and entertainment programmes from New Zealand and from International partners.”

There’s no better time of year than spring to install a heat pump – with the rush of winter months over and the full blast of summer heat yet to come your local installers have shorter waiting times and, usually, big discounts available from the big name manufacturers. Hundreds of thousands of Kiwi homes have already warmed up to the exceptional value and convenience of this modern form of heating, reaping the benefits of inexpensive heating and refreshing, filtered cool air in summer. But thousands more are coming onboard with the heat pump concept every year, spurred on in part by generous grants available through the government’s EECA scheme. Of course, a good quality heat pump is a valuable investment, and the doctrine of ‘do it once, do it right’ applies to heat pumps in a big way! Luckily, if you’re in the Kaipara district you have at your disposal a team of dedicated electricians and heat pump experts who think just the same way – they are fully qualified to make a plan, fit the right heat pump for your home, and also provide top notch after sales service to ensure years of hassle-free comfort. Bruce Metzener and his team have been working under the Laser name since 1991, so you won’t find many people more experienced with the all-important task of selecting the right heat pump for the right home and family. Picture of Spring

As I write this it has been raining all weekend. Not quite the picture of Spring we are used to! However, on the bright side, the District Council tell me that the dams and water tables are high, so we have no water supply challenges this year. Also, NIWA tell us that from mid-October the La Nina weather pattern will take over, providing Northland with a warmer and dryer summer. So if you want a summer vege garden, now is the time to plant. As usual, our range and quality are superb. We have over 30 varieties and sizes of tomatoes in store. This year again we are featuring our Fast Food range of veges, from single pots of tomatoes, capsicums, aubergines and cucumbers with fruit already on the plant – each for $15.99 – to “ready to eat” salanova lettuces at 2 six-packs for $20 – that’s cheaper than dead lettuces in the supermarket!

EVER HAND DOWN RECEIVE A FREE PATIO CLEANER ATTACHMENT, VALUED AT $165, WITH SELECTED STIHL HIGH PRESSURE CLEANERS*.

$475

This week we will receive the first of our kumara plants. These are very popular every year and sell out fast. For this weekend only, all deciduous fruit trees are half price!

RE 108 / High Pressure Cleaner Engine Power 1.7kW Engine Capacity 230V Weight 15kg Max Waterflow Rate 6.3L/min Max Working Pressure 110 bar (1,590psi)

So if you haven’t planted an apple, plum, peach, pear, nectarine, nashi, persimmon, or apricot, now is the perfect time to do so. These are all healthy first grade trees, many now in leaf and bud. And remember that every deciduous fruit tree sold this year comes with a free planting kit. Another treat this week is a huge discount on our popular Living Herbs range. Usually $3.99 each, they are on special at 2 for just $5. No excuses not to put in a herb garden this year! We also have a few Luisa Plum trees left. These are the ultimate eating plum for Northland, and we have already sold about a third more this year than any other year. You may have noticed the Go Gardening ads on TV in support of the Nursery and Garden Industry. We are full members of the NGIA, and happily give out over 10,000 Go Gardening magazines every year free to every shopper. Happy gardening all.

OCTOBER 5 - 2011

Keep cool this summer with DAE Most modern cars come equipped with advanced air conditioning to keep you cool on those long hot summer drives. In the same way, many of the machines which keep the wheels of industry, infrastructure and agriculture turning are outfitted with air conditioning to keep their operators comfortable, alert and ready for a hard day’s work — all of those tractors, harvesters, diggers and construction machines which keep the economy ticking over. In the Kaipara area, there’s one team of professionals dedicated to keeping all that air conditioning equipment running as it should — the team from Dargaville Auto Electrical. Since as far back as 1980 Terry Boakes of DAE has been working on air-conditioning systems. He struck out on his own in 1990 as Polar Auto, and by 2002 the firm had become the number one auto air conditioning service centre in the Kaipara. Today Terry works with DAE to bring his years of experience to their customers, across all makes and models of machine — from the family car to the biggest earthmovers and tractors. DAE operate two mobile vans to keep your fleet cool, increasing operator comfort and boosting productivity. They’ll go (almost) anywhere to reduce your downtime! DAE can even custom-make everything from new hoses to entire systems, retrofitting older classic vehicles or outfitting brand new projects. They also supply a regassing service for air-conditioning units which have lost their power over the years. Automotive air conditioning is a specialist trade, and it pays to get the job done right first time. If it’s time for a regular service before summer for your air-conditioned vehicles — no matter what shape or size — come and see DAE — still number one and proud.

Competitors of Suzuki have already been floored by the rise of the now iconic Swift (the second generation of which has recently taken over from the first as NZ’s favourite hot hatch), and now a whole new market niche has been opened up with the arrival of the Splash on our shores. First and foremost it’s important to note the differences between this car and the Swift — the Splash occupies its own space and is by no means designed to supersede its ‘big brother’. Spacious, nippy and stylish, the Splash embodies a sense of elegant practicality, and brings to the Kiwi market one of the most amazing fourdimensional magic tricks in the industry. Quite simply, this neat-as-a-button little hatch with its snub nose and tiny turning circle is big enough inside to get lost in! Clever engineering is clearly afoot here. Internally the cabin of the Splash is tall and spacious, with a commanding view afforded by the high, comfortable seating position. Getting in and out is a breeze, and there’s been no compromise on safety — indeed, with a full suite of airbags and all the traction and stability control features of the very agile Swift, this cabin is comfortable and secure. Leather and brushed aluminium accents pick out an uncluttered and smart interior, featured around a bold single-dial display which hints at the original Cooper or the iconic VW beetle.

The sporty little wheel is equipped with fingertip controls for the stereo, and both driver and passenger seats are fully adjustable. But the European build quality of the interior (unlike the Swift, the Splash is manufactured in Europe) isn’t the real trick up this intelligent contender’s sleeve. It’s the feisty 1.2 litre engine and, more pointedly, its fuel economy of only 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres. That’s HALF the consumption of a similar car just a few years ago which gives the Splash impeccable economic and environmental credentials. Then again, the price of only $17,990 for a nippy 5-speed manual model could be part of the appeal too — a price which puts real tried and tested quality into the reach of those who would usually have resorted to a second hand car! If smart, economical and stylish is your thing, and if you need a practical small car with a little bit of personality and a lot of innovations built in, then the new Splash is for you. Check out the advert on the back page of this edition and contact Pacific Motor Group’s Suzuki branch in Whangarei for a test drive, and witness for yourself just how well a clever idea can come together.

New Ranger — works hard, plays hard by Kaipara Lifestyler motoring correspondent

For those amongst us who value a good day’s recreation just as much as a hard day’s work, the new Ford Ranger is just the ticket — a tough and capable ute which effortlessly bridges the gap between workhorse power and sedan-like comfort Well, perhaps effortlessly is not the word — Ford have put in over one million kilometres of test driving time over five continents to hone this machine down to a level of precision few other auto makers can boast — the culmination of an ambitious programme to make the Ranger the number one light commercial vehicle on Earth. They’ve gotten off to a great start with the styling of the latest iteration of their popular utility — a whole new look awaits your viewing pleasure, with the new Ranger adopting a streamlined front treatment and altogether smoother lines than its predecessor. At the same time there’s no mistaking the road-dominating stance of the Ranger, especially a very nice set of alloys which lend a muscular look to the finished product. Internally it’s a similar story — a wide and comfortable cabin space tastefully appointed with all the mod cons (including dual zone climate control) yet still rugged and practical enough to pack in a whole work crew. What’s more, come the weekend the whole family will fit into the double cab with ease, leaving ample stowage space for all your luggage, groceries — or a whole bbq! Whether for work or play you’ll also be impressed by the Ranger’s ability to haul a mighty load, towing up to 3,350kg with 1,492kg on the deck, depending on which model you choose. That’s a phenomenal amount of pulling power, made possible by the smart and economical TDCi range of engines powering the Ranger lineup. It’s also helped along by Adaptive Load Control, which works behind the scenes to keep

the Ranger rock steady and stable no matter how you’ve stacked its payload. The previous iteration of the Ford Ranger was a firm favourite with the public because of its uncompromising blend of no-nonsense practicality and its comfortable, car-like ride. Once again Ford have managed to advance their flagship light commercial without sacrificing any of the spark which made the previous model so well loved — but to really get a grip on this refined new ute you’ll have to visit Lindsay West for a test drive. Stop in at Dargaville Ford today and check out the new Ranger — it’s the vehicle which works and plays as hard as you do!

OCTOBER 5 - 2011

Big boars means it’s never boring Aratapu’s famous Wild Boar Hunt again took place last month and, true to form, drew in a large crowd and some heavy wild beasts. Nathan Marshall took the top prize with a massive 86.2 kilogramme boar — as judged by Ridgeline officials Ross Guy, Tony Stockman and Sid Bristow. Andrew Howells came in first on Saturday, with the heaviest boar of the day. Alan Hadlow’s average-weight catch for the weekend, weighed in at 59.1 kilogrammes. The annual event was characterised by a familiar festive atmosphere and large crowds.

Raffles tickets were also sold throughout the weekend and these will benfit the local community and select charity groups. The popular Hokianga Country and Western Music Club returned to entertain the crowd in the sunny, sheltered garden bar. The spit roast and array of salads ensured that the punters and hunters were well sustained. Aratapu Tavern proprietors, Richard and Donice Morris, were overwhelmed by the considerable support they received from the community and their sponsors. This is one competition — and tradition —

Making the switch to Freeview easy! Technology moves pretty quickly these days, with new innovations and improvements changing the way we talk to each other, how we view the world, and now, how we watch TV. Freeview is coming, with the change over from old-fashioned analogue television set to occur in a couple of years’ time. But the shift to a better, clearer picture, flawless reception and better choice of channels for news, sports and entertainment needn’t be a great expense — or a major hassle. In fact, it’s easier than you may have realised, so long as you talk to the experts at Davison Electrical. Gilbert Davison has been installing the rooftop dishes and set-top boxes needed to access the new Freeview service since the changeover was announced, and he points out that many of his customers are already well prepared for the new era of TV. While television sets with a ‘built in’ Freeview box won’t do the trick in the Kaipara region (they get their signal from a transmitter in Auckland), most modern TVs will work perfectly with an inexpensive Freeview box installed by Gilbert and his team. They’ll also walk you through how to get the most out of your new

Freeview set-up, in plain language — it’s just as easy as using the remote for your stereo or your current television! To add peace of mind, Davison Electrical are also there to answer your questions with just a phone call — there’s no need to worry if you push the wrong button a few minutes before the big game starts! With their help you’ll very quickly be able to master Freeview like a professional, and being local, their after-sales service is second to none. Gilbert, Nigel and Max (who runs the local office, and who is himself a respected local electrician with many years’ experience) want the people of the Kaipara and Dargaville to know above all else that the change to Freeview is easy, affordable and simple. It all starts with a totally free measure and quote, which you can book by calling their Dargaville office — and the outcome is a new world of entertainment in information in your lounge room, brought to you with no monthly bills to pay and often without the need to buy a costly new television set. Give them a call today to get the ball rolling — you’ll simply love the crisp, clear and easy-to-use new world of Freeview!

Save our rail The petition to save Northland’s rail network has attracted well over 10,000 signatures and will be presented to Government in the coming weeks. Those who signed the petition did so for a variety of reasons, including the Kyoto Protocol, health and safety concerns, historical preservation and loss of infrastructure. In the coming days organiser, Vivienne Shepherd, will hand the petition to Green MP, Gareth Hughes, on the steps of Parliament. Mr Hughes joins Labour MP Kelvin Davis, at a public meeting in Whangarei on October 11, which will explore the case for retaining rail. “Some 10,000 Northlanders can’t be wrong,” says Ms Shepherd. “It’s even bigger than the GE-Free petition, so we are hoping local and national government will clearly see where the people are at on this one and support the Northland network accordingly.” At the time of publication, 12, 899 had signed the petition for a variety of reasons. Among these were sustainable energy, the possibility of an electrified rail network, New Zealand’s commitment to the Kyoto Protocol, concerns about health and road safety, heritage and tourism and the loss of economic opportunities. Viv says it had been easy collecting petition signatures so far and sometimes, people are lining up to sign it. “The results speak for themselves. I guess that ordinary people think longer term than our governments do. Northlanders can see the sense in maintaining our rail line to keep logging trucks off the road — rail is a way more efficient use of fossil fuel.” A Forum North meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 11, starting at 7pm, with addresses from invited guests, including existing and potential rail users, members of parliament and representatives from district and regional councils. KiwiRail representatives have also been invited. Business consultant, Teresa Moore, will present an up-to-date summary of her findings in the Save Our Rail Northland campaign and additional speakers will present their case. The forum starts at 7pm in Room 2. Light refreshments will be available and people attending will be asked to contribute to overall costs and pro-rail t-shirts will be on sale for $25.

Warriors bow out as All Blacks power into quarter finals This Sunday night, despite the fact that all eyes were on New Zealand and another hard-hitting All blacks’ victory in the Rugby World Cup, many Kiwi fans were directing their hopes and prayers fervently over the Tasman. That’s where a gutsy Warriors’ side took to the field for only their second outing in the NFL’s grand final — which if only momentarily — elevated League above the vaunted position of Union during this epic season of rugby. And while the Warriors slammed into the stalwart Manly Sea Eagles’ defensive line with determination and spirit, the seasoned Australian veterans were just that little bit more aggressive, taking the hard knocks and keeping their eye on strategic gains. Come the first whistle the Warriors were down 12-2, thanks in part to some questionable calls and despite the valiant efforts of Manu Vatuvei in shutting down a Manly try — a feat which only showed up in the replay! In the end the Kiwi dream ended in a 24-10 loss, even though the impassioned Warriors put up a spirited second half defence. Hopefully this defeat (and to be fair, the Warriors played like champions to reach the grand final in the first place!) is the only one New Zealand will have to suffer this rugby season. Crunch time looms in the RWC arena, as the pool games draw to a close, leaving eight sides to fight it out in the sudden-death quarter and semi-finals. We kick off with the biggest day of rugby yet on the 8th of this month — tune in from 6pm as the game gets underway between Ireland and Wales. Both teams come from a strong heritage of rugby, and both have shown great form in this tourney already — especially giant-killers Ireland who unseated Australia in their last face-off. Following this at 8.30pm is a match which comes with more than a hint of rivalry — England take on France in Auckland in a clash of northern rugby superpowers which may well decide the makeup of the final. New Zealand demolished the French in their last outing and they will be looking to regain their form and composure, but England is nothing if not methodical and strategic, and this could play out like an extension of the hundred years’ war! Sunday dawns on an epic day of rugby for the southern hemisphere

ARATAPU TAVERN

teams, with a smarting Aussie side weighing up against South Africa at 6pm. We will soon see if Robbie Deans was really playing strategy over glory when his team succumbed to the Irish assault. The Springboks are merciless and both sides deserve a place in the semi’s based on their trinations’ performance. Only one can pass this test! Finally we’ll get to cheer on the All Blacks again at 8.30pm as they take the field against Argentina — an oftunderestimated side who have fought hard and played smart to get this far. With the roll of the injured growing in the AB’s camp, this game will be all about new combinations and tempering the steel of the home team before the next week’s trials — a likely face off with the teams who beat them in the tri-nations. How far have Henry’s boys come in the weeks since then?

At 1250cc she’s smart and lively with heaps of personality and perfect round town manners. New Splash is light, compact, and runs on a whiff of fuel. But if you’re tall or just need more room, new Splash will love you even more. In fact we think she’s practically perfect. Come in and meet new Splash, from just $17,990 driveaway.
