Gifted kids need your help

The Kaipara was well represented in the final awards at this year’s Northland Performing Arts Competitions 62nd Festival of Dance, Music and Speech
In the vocal competition, twenty-six performers were students of Matakohe singing teacher, Maura Flower. “All of my students did really well and the kids were amazing,” says Maura. “However, although it’s lovely to win first place, I emphasise that I just want them all to do their personal best and have fun! “Out of my 26 performers, there were 20 adults and six children and we came away with eight first placings.

“Young Molly Curnow, who’s not quite 10, came first in two categories. Molly, who played the ever-optimistic red head, Annie, in Otamatea Repertory Theatre’s recent production, was also placed second for a duet piece with her partner, Kayla Joyce, and some minor placings for her other entries. “It’s a huge competition and competitors come from all over, including Kerikeri, Auckland, Whangarei and the Kaipara, so it’s really exciting that we did so well. The other first place getters were Chiannae Smart, Amy and Mya Lawrence, Anna-Marie Cutts, Kathy Bygrave, Emma Rankin and Carine Lange.”

Maura adds, that in terms of a pastime, singing is becoming increasingly popular among adults. “Also, you can do it anywhere and it is relatively inexpensive — you don’t need to buy an instrument or other gear because you were born with it — your instrument is your voice.”
