Community care boosts complex by Paul Campbell

Another six self-owned two-bedroom homes are to be added to the Maungaturoto Retirement Village in a major local initiative

“This is a community that does things, makes things happen and always has. It’s another milestone for the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust,” said trust chairman, Don McKay. He and other volunteers were this week working on site at a recently purchased property adjoining the retirement village in the town, preparing for another six ‘own your own’ two-bedroom units with lockup garaging. “Over the last six months the adjoining site behind the new vicarage has had a major make over,” said Mr McKay. “Locals would have seen Underwood Contractors removing tons of over burden, reshaping the site to accommodate the new buildings. Brogan builders constructed a substantial retaining wall to accommodate the multi-level site on which the new units will be built and which have been designed by local architect, Keith Youngman.” Final site work will begin as soon as the weather permits. The units will be carpeted with drapes, and sold on a cross lease basis with a management contract. A monthly service fee Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust chairman, Don McKay covers rates, insurance and grounds care, currently checking out the site and plans for the new units for the retirement village $220 per month. “Those people on waiting lists for OYO units will be given first Kaipara District Council in 1998. Twins: We’re not a load of bull! Kaipara farmer, Ivan Blitvic, was astonished to find his Friesian cow’s twins. While the twin calves were healthy and perfectly formed, one was clearly Friesian and the other, a Hereford. “When I found the twins, I actually looked around and thought, ‘There must be another cow somewhere’ — but no,” says Ivan. “In this case, we didn’t use AB, we just ran a Friesian and a Hereford bull with the herd’s tail-enders at the end of the mating season. This cow obviously had two boyfriends and one happened to be a Friesian, while the other was a Hereford.

“The twins were born one after the other but they are totally different. Apart from being different breeds, the Hereford has horns while the Friesian doesn’t. “Their mother was very proud of her calves but she’s back in the herd now, making a dollar. As for the calves, I will keep them myself — the Friesian in the dairy herd and the Hereford will go to the run-off for grazing.” The phenomenon is unusual but not a first. Paparoa Primary School’s coffers are jingling to the tune of $6,438 in the wake of their third PTA Possum Purge. “The event was an outstanding success which was thanks to the large team of helpers and possum hunters,” said organiser, Libby Jones. “We had 27 teams, with 68 adults, and 46 kids which were up on last year. “They brought in 840 possums to be plucked. “Around 250 people attended the prizegiving with heaps of fun activities such as a bouncy castle and slide, face painting, gumboot toss, coconut shy, possum quizzes, raffles, possum plucking, and $6,000 worth of sponsored prizes. “Local Paparoa and Maungaturoto businesses really came to the fore with practically all providing a donation. It was a real community event with a large number of locals coming to join the teams of hunters at the prizegiving.” At the gritty end of the day, professional possum hunters, Jeff Allen and Craig Hardisty, stepped in to salvage the possum fur. “They were fantastic and if you want to get rid of possums on your farm or block, we

Focus on planning Essentially from a rural background, the Kaipara District Council’s policy and planning manager, Mark Vincent, has his current focus firmly on the Long Term District Plan. “Part way through a law degree at Victoria I had the inspiration to go farming,” said Mark. “A couple of farming diplomas later I was the shepherd on a 1200ha property in the Bay of Islands for four years. That led to a farm managing job out of Mark Vincent Paparoa, and then the opportunity to join the Otamatea County Council as a noxious plants officer in the years leading up to it becoming part of Kaipara. After a short time I was offered an administrative role which had become available at the council, which was fortunate as I was ready for a new challenge. “Much of my time since then has been involved in dealing with regulatory issues, until the recent restructure gave me the chance of a change into the policy and planning area. “The new job is providing lots of new and interesting challenges for me, with the Proposed Plan to finalise and the Long Term Plan to be completed over the next year. I want these documents to be as user-friendly as possible, to the extent allowed by the legislation. I want our citizens to know that it is worthwhile being part of the process as well as accepting that ultimately council must act in the interests of the district as a whole, not just one part of it. “I have a personal as well as professional interest in restoring the health of the harbour. I consider it is too important for the community to abdicate this responsibility to councils, although local and central government agencies have important supporting roles to play. The Kaipara Harbour Integrated Management Group, supported by KDC, also has a key co-ordinating role. I would however like to see landowners recognising it as being in their own best interests to fence off foreshore and wetland areas and plant them up. “My wife Cindy and I will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in a couple of month’s time. We have three grown up children, and eight grandchildren scattered between Auckland and Ashburton.”

The big spring clean Westpac Dargaville staff along with members from the Sir Peter Blake Trust have done their part to help ensure the gems of New Zealand’s coastline stay intact for future generations. On Saturday, 17 September, they participated in a coastal clean-up, which is part of the Sir Peter Blake Trust’s Care for our Coast programme. Nicola Smith, manager at Westpac Dargaville said Baylys Beach is one of the region’s best assets and it is important for the community to be involved in helping preserve it. “It’s important that our kids — and eventually, their kids — get to experience New Zealand’s wonderful coastline, especially spots like Baylys Beach. That means we can’t treat the ocean as a giant rubbish tip.”

Nicola adds that plastic and other inorganic waste is disastrous for seabirds, seals and dolphins. Animals can get entangled or end up choking and human health and some commercial industries can be affected. “On a more personal note, who wants to go to the beach and find the sand full of cigarette butts or even nastier surprises?” Westpac has set itself a target to remove one million pieces of rubbish from our beaches and waterways throughout New Zealand in four years. In the past three years, over 710,000 pieces of rubbish have been picked up and on Saturday, 1,521 pieces were removed from Baylys Beach.

We locals know the Kaipara Harbour is a great place to fish for snapper, but our visitors are impressed to learn more than 95 per cent of the snapper off the west coast of the entire North Island were spawned in the harbour.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Respecting a treasure by Paul Campbell A weekend on the Kaipara Harbour is a step into a wonderful world and it always perplexes me that many a visitor from Auckland, as on this occasion, is amazed that this huge harbour is right on their doorstep. It seems many don’t associate a trip to Helensville, just minutes from their city, with the same vast expanse of water that is also accessed from Port Albert, Te Hana, Pahi, Tinopai, Ruawai and Dargaville. I guess Auckland thinks of itself as a Hauraki Gulf child. It is also surprising when we remember that European settlers began arriving in the Kaipara circa 1839. You would imagine word would have got out more positively in the years since. But no. Auckland visitors still express surprise. My recent guests said they have ‘vaguely heard something about power turbines in the sea up this way’ and ‘some problems with the fish’. As we were about to embark on a quest for some snapper for the dinner table, I felt it timely to bring them up to date on the Crest Energy proposals, as well as acquaint them with a few fishy facts.

DARGAVILLE SEWING AND CURTAIN CENTRE

Craft Corner

Crafty move for fabric artisans Dargaville’s famous sewing centre has recently moved and expanded into new premises in Normanby Street, transforming what was once Main Street Interiors into a ‘mini department store’ of fabric arts and crafts. Local fashion boutique Bessiemay has also come on board, bringing fashion design, alterations, patchwork, quilting, curtains and more all under one roof. Marion McEwing and husband Brian are the joint owners of the store, with family and friends making up a dedicated team who are passionate about their craft in every way. While Brian installs custom curtains and blinds, Marion and her daughters Jessica and Julianne take care of the store with long-term friend and colleague Pat, offering style and colour advice as well as a vast range of fabrics, sewing and needlework accessories and more. As well as their colour and image consultancy the Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre team create unique evening and bridal wear, complete clothing alterations, host classes in sewing and crafts, and are delighted to combine their hobby with their livelihood. What’s more, Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre is a five-star Janome dealer, selling and servicing this leading brand of sewing machine. With such a wealth of experience it’s no surprise that the loyal clientele of Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre often drop in for advice or just to chat — a trend which may soon see Marion writing a column about sewing, patchwork and other crafts right here in the Lifestyler! As they say, keep watching this space.

National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research scientists collected juvenile snapper from seven estuaries along the west coast of the North Island and in a process that involved checks — of all things — their ear bones — came up with a chemical signature that told where they originated. Rugby on display at Wellsford Rugby buffs have a treat in store at Wellsford’s Albertland Heritage Centre, which is staging an exhibit of memorabilia in conjunction with the Rugby World Cup. Photos and other exhibits date from early 1900s untill the present and include Port Albert and Wellsford clubs. There are also Rodney area representative teams displayed. “Anyone interested in sport in the area will find the exhibition of great interest,” said committee member, Jill Earley. Second chance recycling Thinking outside the square, Kaipara Refuse is opening their depot at the Awakino Road Transfer Station with the aim to re-use and recycle. The Second Chance shop will be open from October 1, with new transfer station hours, 9.00am-4.00pm weekdays, closed Thursdays and 10.00am-2.00pm on weekends, opening on Sundays on trial until February. Also available is e-Cycle, encouraging people to recycle electronic waste. “We aim to recover as much as possible, pulling anything out of the rubbish that can be re-used. There is lots of stuff to be broken down and what someone might think is rubbish maybe reused by someone else,” said manager, Rob Battcher. “Kaurilands Skills Centre clients are employed by Kaipara Refuse to do the recycling collection and assist in the recovery of recyclable materials from the transfer station.

“Kaipara Refuse has also taken on e-Cycle, recycling electronic equipment, TVs, computers etc. A moderate fee will be charged to cover the cost of safe recycling. TVs and computer monitors are bulky and expensive to transport and contain very little recyclable material. “Electronic waste is one of the fastest growing and most toxic waste streams. Electronic waste contains heavy metals and chemicals which can harm land, water and people. Through recycling, valuable and scarce metals can be recovered and used again. E-Cycle is aiming to achieve zero e-waste to landfill,” said e-Cycle spokesperson, Gina Dempster. “This is the first time most communities have been able to recycle TVs. With the digital switchover starting next year, it is expected that a flood of TVs will be replaced. Each TV contains three kilograms of lead; a good reason to keep it out of the landfill. C

Tribute Tour — the echo of an era

Sometimes you go to a show and are thankful you made the effort — and you also feel sorry for all those that didn’t come. Such was the case at the Dargaville Town Hall on Saturday night when a disappointingly small but enthusiastic crowd enjoyed what can fairly be described as a world-class performance by the Howard Morrison Trio and Showband. The How Great Thou Art Tribute Tour, which is currently traversing the country certainly harkens back to the golden days of Kiwi entertainers. The lineup includes the late Sir Howard Morrison’s son, Howard Morrison Junior, Russell Harrison and Chris Powley, performing as the Howard Morrison Trio. Their repertoire pays homage to a great New Zealand entertainer, bringing to life a musical collage of songs that defined an era and assured the Howard Morrison Quartet’s place in New Zealand’s musical history. “It was an outstanding concert,” said one of the lucky ticket-holders, Patricia Mortensen. “The group was highly professional but they also had that indefinable casual feel that typified the original quartet about them too. Plenty of down to earth kiwi humour that somehow spans the generational and cultural gap. It made for a really great performance and one that richly deserved a wider audience.” Another concert-goer, Lynley Clements said the trio and their backing showband were “absolutely spot on — just brilliant. As well as the music, there were all their jokes and repartee that moved things along. It was like

stepping back in time to those great showbands of the past — the Maori Volcanics and the like.” The show, which lasted for a good couple of hours, ended with a spontaneous standing ovation. The group came together at the late Sir Howard Morrison’s unveiling. The Howard Morrison Trio say they have created a show that embraces the same performance principles, style and flair of the world-renowned Maori show bands of yesterday, but always with the aim of striving to fulfill the needs of an ever-moredemanding audience. Howard Morrison Jnr, Russell Harrison and Chris Powley seem to have rekindled the art of entertainment. They say they will make a return trip to Dargaville in the future, so look out for the dates. — Allan Mortensen

Structured workplace learning, linking school and work The Gateway Program, a TEC funded initiative is designed to strengthen the pathway for students to progress from school to workplace learning. Gateway targets students who have a specific interest in an industry or work type and who are eager to “get out into the real world”. It allows students to experience real workplaces while continuing to study at school. The skills and experiences link in with their vocational study and career goals. Once a student is selected for the program (certain criteria apply), the Coordinator organises work placements and individual learning plans for the student. Learning resources are designed by the ITOs (Industry Training Organisations) that are relevant to the work place. Students are required to complete Unit Standards and practical Assessments during their work placements with the credits counting towards their NCEA and industry qualifications. Placements vary in lengths, are normally 1 day per week for a period of time or some students work during the holidays. We arrange whatever works best for the student and business needs.

helping our young people find their feet and giving something back to the community and local school. It is great to see these working relationships developing. Employers also get a chance to screen potential future employees, and over the years many students have been offered employment and/or apprenticeship upon finishing their years at school. This is also a great outcome for all involved. The Department of Labour recently released a very interesting Trade Occupation Shortage report, providing an overview of NZ industries with a genuine skill and qualification shortage. New Zealand needs to build a skilled workforce —Watch this space, here they come! A public meeting to discuss the cost of the Mangawhai EcoCare sewerage scheme is to be held next Sunday, called by the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association, which claims costs have ballooned from a forecast $23 million to over $50 million. The association says the EcoCare situation will be presented in detail, and a range of options for dealing with the problems will be presented and discussed. It says the Ecocare rate may be unlawful and despite numerous challenges and undertakings the Kaipara District Council has made ‘no progress in rectifying the situation’. It adds that the KDC is invited to the meeting. However the council’s outgoing CEO, Jack McKerchar, says council will not be attending. “It has given an undertaking to the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association and two other individuals, that it will carry out an independent review of the scheme,” Mr McKerchar says. “It does not want to impair that process.“ He added that the association’s advice of the meeting contained inaccurate information. “The scheme was originally proposed for 1200 connections. During the development and construction of the scheme Mangawhai continued to grow. The council decided to cater for that growth. Today there are close to 2500 sections connected and the facility has the capacity to cater for 3300 connections. The cost of the scheme has been well controlled by council and came in at council’s approved budget.” Association contacts for Sunday’s meeting are: Bill Bygrave 09 431 2057; Helen Curreen 09 431 5447; Bruce Rogan 09 431 5413.

A big Ruawai black out To celebrate New Zealand hosting the Rugby World Cup and to support the mighty All Black’s effort to win the much-sought-after Webb Ellis trophy, the Ruawai community created their very own ‘Black-out’ last Monday. Ruawai Kindergarten, primary school and college pupils, along with much of the local community turned out in the show of support, with everyone encouraged to dress in black. The schools held a mufti day to help in the endeavour.

www.kaiparalifestyler.co.nz

The community gathered at Kaipara Kumara’s forecourt in front of their massive ‘Go the All Blacks sign’. “We couldn’t have done it without the support from Tony Patterson and his drivers, ferrying the school students, my staff, the teachers and the local community,” said

Kaipara Kumara director, Anthony Blundell. “Ruawai has jumped on board and supported the Rugby World Cup. “There are flags flying in support as you drive through town. We want everyone to know that we support the All Blacks 100%.”

Relationships need to be healthy for us to be healthy. This includes your relationship with yourself. Are you a bit hard on yourself? Often those with high standards are hardest on themselves. In loving yourself, you allow others to love you too. Allocate some time in your busy life to spend with people who are important to you. Laugh. Having fun and quality experiences don’t have to cost dollars. Instead of sitting in front of a screen, get outside and connect with nature. Breathe. Activities like gardening, walking on the beach or in the bush will really help you to relax and unwind. Being outside in the sunshine lifts the spirits and raises vitamin D levels in your body. Exercise boosts the immune system as well as being good for your heart and circulation. Nourish yourself well, food is your body’s fuel for energy and repairs. Try to avoid excesses, but a little of what you fancy does do you good. Go for it! — by Sally Randall RN, MRNZ

Halo shines even more brightly! The dropcloths have come down from around a new work of art in Dargaville — the stunningly modern redesigned premises of Halo Hair Design! For two years owner, Leanne Pomare, has been planning the visually stunning upgrade to her popular hair studio, and the results are nothing short of fabulous. Of course, such attention to detail and modern styling are simply a reflection of the keen aesthetics of Leanne and her team of stylists — Rachel Kuljish, Dawn Dreadon, Alana Sherman, and the exceptionally talented Kiri Wati, who has just finished an intensive threeyear hairdressing course to join the Halo ‘angels in disguise’. Amid the sheer black and shining chrome of their new premises, these skilled haircare professionals offer the full salon and studio experience — fashion foils, colours, cuts and blow waving, a full range of PPS haircare products and of course straightening with the prestigious GHD trademark! Special occasions and formal events are a speciality. But that’s not the only reason for their ‘angel’ status — the team at Halo also support training in the industry via the Gateway programme, and will soon be joining forces with the Kaipara Lifestyler to honour community heroes with a special weekly award.

Wellbeing

Spring ponderings on health and wellbeing My holistic health work and teaching is driven by my passion to enable people to be the best they can be. I value all aspects of health: mind; body; spirit and relationships. As we move into SPRING, here are a few ideas on how to increase your potential for health and wellbeing. Start listening to the signs your body gives you. It is not healthy to push past your limits. I see pain and ‘dis-ease’ as the body’s signs that something is wrong or out of balance. Take positive action for your wellbeing. Please remember that martyrdom belongs to an ancient era! Positive thoughts and self talk lead to positive experiences. Try starting the day with thinking of something that you are thankful for. I assure you that you will be able to find something, it could be being thankful for your bed, the roof over your head, or the love in your life. A smile will form on your face to start the day.

Kaipara Community Health Trust

Important Changes to the Health Shuttle Service Changes to the Health Shuttle service will be introduced during September. The Health Shuttle will focus on: 1. Helping the whole community (Ruawai North) access health services in Whangarei 2. Helping rural people access health services in Dargaville. For bookings phone Te Ha Oranga 439 3013.

What this means is: The Health Shuttle will no longer be collecting people within the Dargaville Township and taking them to appointments in Dargaville.

So if you live within the Dargaville Township area i.e. inside the 100km/hour speed limits, Ritches Town Service can help you, they have reduced their fares to $10 return trip, on their scheduled timetable route. YES they are able to collect you from your home if you ring 439 6306 and make a booking, it would be helpful to align your appointments within their scheduled bus route. Working together we hope to be able to meet the transport needs of our community.

Suzuki Swift

It’s easy to talk entirely in superlatives when discussing the Suzuki Swift. It’s first iteration was accorded the title of NZ’s favourite small car — indeed, our favourite car hands down as it won over a generation of motorists with its fun, funky looks and utter practicality. When you look at the second generation Swift, clichés spring to mind about the best getting better, of new tricks from a car which is the very opposite of an old dog. The heir to the supermini crown has just kept surprising through both generations, with careful evolution and tweaking from Suzuki adding space, widening the car’s stance, delivering even better fuel economy and still retaining the thrillingly nimble feel through the corners which has seen the Swift become a firm favourite with critics and the public alike. Indeed, the figures tell the tale: 5.5 to

6.2 litres per 100 kilometres; 5 stars on the all important ANCAP safety rating; 1.4 litres of precision hardware under the hood which purrs contentedly and unhurriedly at motorway speeds. With electronic stability control and brake force distribution backing up a cleverly designed layout, the Swift certainly lives up to its name, parking, turning and handling with smooth and precise ease. Here in the north the Suzuki Swift is available from Pacific Motor Group in Whangarei, who have a specialist Suzuki dealership in Kioreroa road. Here you’ll find a full range of Suzuki cars and motorcycles — including the exciting new Swift. It’s well worth a drive over to take the wheel of this incredible little vehicle, and see for yourself why it’s become New Zealand’s favourite!

Upsets and excitement set the stage You could be excused for thinking that Saint Patrick’s Day came twice this year, as overjoyed Irish fans celebrated their team’s victory over Australia in what has to be the stand-out upset of the tournament so far. Supporters, who had packed the 02 arena in Dublin to watch their team tackle the highly rated Wallabies partied into the night after the boys in green pulled off a tryless win to shake the World Cup to its roots. All eyes will be on the chastened Australian side as they take on relative novices the United States this Friday — from 8.30pm expect a lot of Kiwi fans to tune in and see if the Wallabies can come back on form — or if they’ll dip out before the semis! Equally keenly observed will be the match between Ireland and Russia on Sunday the 25th at 7.30pm. Can the men from the Emerald Isle keep up their winning streak? Elsewhere in the pools on Sunday the determined Scots team takes on Argentina at 8.30pm, with Scotland keen to show the Irish that they aren’t the only Celtic warriors in this tournament! Meanwhile it’s a battle of Pacific Island neighbours as Fiji and Samoa face off in an afternoon game at 3.30pm, with both teams putting their national pride on the line in what is sure to be a very hard fought game. Of course here in the North there are two big fixtures we’re looking forward to — the first promises a replay of the festive atmosphere and

Central

bright red banners of last Wednesday, which saw Whangarei transformed into a RWC carnival! On Tuesday the 27th Canada and Japan meet on the grassy battleground of Toll Stadium for a match that will light up the north — be sure to get there early! And most crucially of all, on Saturday the 24th at 8.30pm the All Blacks take on their most feared World Cup opponents — a French side who may have had some early jitters last

week, but who still represent a historical fear for our men in black. Memories of World Cups past will hopefully not put their hoodoo on our side as they meet their biggest challenge in the tournament so far! As usual, we’re right behind the mighty A.B.s and so are many of the local businesses in Dargaville — check out all the flags, banners, bunting, balloons and window displays as you cruise downtown to see our patriotic spirit!

Dargaville’s St Joseph’s School showed their support for the All Blacks — and some other teams — by running a themed mufti day to coincide with the opening of the Rugby World Cup 2011. “We usually have a mufti once a fortnight, so we decided we would do a dress up one this time,” said principal, Glennis Guest. “We decorated the tennis courts with All Black flags and got some black and white balloons to decorate the office. We got lots of toots from cars going past, so it was great.

Bust your moves, tricks n’ tunes “Basically we’re throwing a party to mark BNZ’s anniversary,”

The Bank of New Zealand will celebrate its 150th anniversary this October and BNZ branches around New Zealand are devising plans to mark the occasion. Dargaville staff will honour the milestone with a Talent Quest for young and old. “Basically we’re throwing a party to mark BNZ’s anniversary,” says customer service consultant, Terangi Williams. “And we thought, what better way to celebrate than a talent show to showcase Dargaville’s local talent. “We are hoping to have fifteen performers on the night, with a range of singers, dancers — even drummers. Sneak peaks at our acts so far are; Circus Kumarani, the Highland Dance Troupe, Jessica McKenzie and Dan Collett. A few performers are interested but they are yet to be confirmed. “On the night, there will be prizes and the crowd will act as our judges. At the front of the stage there will be boxes with each performer’s name and the crowd will choose their favourite act by placing a card into that performer’s box.

“Acts should be three to eight minutes long – to keep the show running smoothly,” adds Terangi. “We’ll have an award for the crowd favourite, runner up and the BNZ choice winner.” The BNZ Talent Quest is on Friday, October 21, at the Dargaville Town Hall. Doors open at 6.15pm for a 7pm start, admission is five dollars for audience members and seats are limited. All profits made from tickets will go towards a $1000 brick with the Dargaville community name on it, for the Oncology Unit at Whangarei Hospital. Tickets are available from BNZ Dargaville. Refreshments will also be available for purchase at intermission. So come along and celebrate with BNZ Dargaville, you’ll be supporting a great cause. Enquiries should be directed to Terangi or Caleb: 09 439 8543 or 021 1333 232. Email terangi_williams@bnz.co.nz.

Big, bright — and thirsty! If you’ve been wondering about the hot orange paint job which graces part of the Northern Wairoa Hotel, you won’t be alone. Speculation that this bright makeover has been something to do with the Rugby World Cup has proven to a be a little wide of the mark, however — all was revealed when the bold signage of Thirsty Liquor was unveiled, heralding the opening of the nationwide chain’s latest addition. With branches up and down New Zealand (and locally in Waipu, Maungaturoto and Wellsford), the bright orange stores with their big specials and friendly staff have become a hit with the public, offering a wide range of refreshing ales, fine wines and imported spirits perfect for parties, get-togethers and special occasions. In fact, with enough prior notice the Thirsty team can even cater the beverages for your forthcoming event — meaning that while they are Thirsty, your guests won’t be! A warm welcome to Thirsty Liquor from us here at the Lifestyler. We wish you great success and encourage all our readers to come on in and introduce themselves as well.
