Variety at Ruawai A sell-out crowd attended Ruawai College’s fourth Variety Concert and Wearable Arts Show and a high percentage of the students were on stage during the course of the evening “The yearly event was just a typical, old-style, school variety concert with — everything,” said the school’s financial officer and concert organiser, Ngaire Dent. “The acts included the Year 7 drama class, a skit by Year 13 students, the ukulele group, students who are learning to play rock guitar and singers. We also had a couple of guest items this year, including a performance from Matakohe Primary School. “The Year 10 students usually make a wearable art piece and model it in front of the school as part of the Home Economics programme. This year however, we opened the competition up to the whole school and included it as part of the concert. “The ultimate winner was a Year 7 student — one of the youngest participants. Her creation was a caterpillar come butterfly, symbolising a metamorphosis. “The wearable arts would have to have been a highlight, because it’s the first time we’ve included it in the concert but there were a lot of highlights and it was a delightful show. “Supper was also prepared and served by students and part of a curriculum exercise. The Year 11 Home Economics had to decide what they were going to sell, cost it out and work out how much profit they could make. Any profit it will go back to the Home Ec department.”

Excited children, fans, council representatives, RWC officials and 30 Tongan rugby players came out in force for a lively Tongan spectacular, including traditional food and music. After a Tongan welcome, dance and prayer, Mayor Neil Tiller officially welcomed the team to Dargaville. This was followed by a generous fare of taro, raw fish, fresh salads and roast meat — all prepared traditionally and with love. The evening continued with more dance, autograph signing and excitement before the team had to depart for their next destination.

Mangawhai Beach School Agricultural and Gala Day 2011
Nothing characterises rural school life more than an Agricultural Day but the long standing tradition is in danger of joining the history books — however, not if Kaipara communities can help it! Mangawhai Beach School Agricultural and Gala Day, on the Saturday of Labour Weekend, promises to be an awesome day filled with family fun and plenty to see and do. The day will start at 9am with the calf and lamb judging, as proud children present their pampered pets. Familiar favourites will also be on the agenda, such as vegetable animal creations and sand saucers. The miniature gardens will tie in the Rugby World Cup by having a ‘World Flags’ theme. A new custom this year, is that the Year 7 and 8 students are designing and running their own game and activities, as part of their classroom learning, so there are sure to be some creative ideas! The new activities include water walking and sumo suit wrestling but there will also be cake stalls, bric-a-brac, plants, book and toy stalls, gumboot throwing, an electric fence challenge, pony rides, a nail drive and more. Another new event is the ‘True Taste of Mangawhai’, from 11am, featuring an array of local wine, beer and cheese. Lots of local entertainment will also be on offer, with performances by the school kapa haka and Love 2 Dance groups, the School’s ‘Mangawhai’s Got Talent’ finalists and local bands. The popular quick fire raffles are back again and the prizes include an Avanti bike and family photo sitting. The dunking machine, where principal, Aaron Kemp, and some of the teachers will be stationed at times will be a student’s dream come true. The fun day out for young and old, will also

The Daffodil Day Cancer Appeal has had its fundraising efforts boosted, thanks to some help from the Kaipara. Dargaville’s National Bank, along with the help of ANZ Bank, have raised approximately $8,200 for Daffodil Day 2011. “In previous years we were very successful with grocery raffles, so we chose to run these again,” says the National Bank’s, Stacey Beattie. “The raffles ran throughout August and there were limited tickets, which sold out in record time. “Our numerous raffles included an iced cake, pet hampers, pamper packs and, of course, our massive grocery hampers. These were all very well supported and we would like to say a big congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who brought tickets. “On Daffodil Day itself, we ran our annual sausage sizzle and had a fantastic array of delicious slices and cup cakes for sale. Many of the baked goods were kindly donated.” The National Bank and ANZ Bank would also like to say a huge thank you to all the businesses that contributed to their success on Daffodil Day and also thank the community for getting behind a worthy cause. They look forward to next year and your help to make another impressive contribution to the cancer appeal.

Civil disobedience call over sewerage costs by Paul Campbell
‘Kaipara is now in the same situation as Greece, except that Greece will get bailed out’ This was the dire warning, as well as a suggestion of civil disobedience in the form of refusing to pay rates, as around 200 Mangawhai residents supported by visitors from other parts of the Kaipara packed the town’s senior citizens’ hall last weekend demanding answers to the spiraling cost of the EcoCare sewage treatment system. The meeting was called by the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association which claims the EcoCare rates on the community are unlawful and invalid, and that Kaipara District Council debt — at $60 million for the sewage scheme alone — has “reached the point where the collapse of the district is inevitable unless urgent and drastic action is taken. “We have exhausted our options for achieving productive dialogue with the Kaipara District Council,” said association chairman, Bruce Rogan.
Mr Rogan said the meeting was called to define the problems the community faced and hear from those who might have solutions to contribute or need questions answered. He added an audit of all council financial transactions was needed to ascertain what money was spent and where it had gone. This had to be done as ‘a prerequisite to forming any plan of action to deal with the crisis as a whole’. He noted that Mr McKerchar had ‘told the Kaipara Lifestyler that council won’t show up here’, and then noted the presence of Mayor Neil Tiller,
who told the meeting he was present although ‘Jack advised me not to come’. Mr Tiller spoke to a number of questions from the floor, in effect confirming that council costs were financed by borrowings. Mr Rogan then said that “if at the next meeting we have no progress to report,” (in seeking an audit of council finances) “and no prospect of any, and it is clear we have our community behind us, we are going to propose to you that we all withhold our rates until somebody starts to take us seriously.” The Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association will meet again to discuss any progress and community options on Sunday, October 23.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.
Scallop season a mixed bag by Paul Campbell The scallop season opened on the Kaipara at the beginning of this month and enthusiasts out gathering the delicacies have been reporting a mixed bag so far. A straw poll of early season boaties finds some have managed a quota bag in a fairly short time, while others have found the shellfish a little more elusive. The local harbour situation seems to be reflected around Northland, with the local field operations manager for the Ministry of Fisheries, Darren Edwards, saying that early results have been patchy. “However, stocks are good, although there is predominance of juvenile scallops that have yet to reach the minimum 100 mls across. But it bodes well for the future of the fishery.” Mr Edwards added that the season so far has been trouble free, with fishers obeying the rules and regulations. “We had three-day patrols out on both land and sea at the start of the season, and these will be continued over the coming months.” From September 1 until March 31, gatherers are allowed to take a maximum of 20 scallops measuring a minimum of 100 millimetres. MAF head office spokesman, Greg Keys, says fishers are expected

Kaipara Community Health Trust
Important Changes to the Health Shuttle Service Changes to the Health Shuttle service will be introduced during September. The Health Shuttle will focus on: 1. Helping the whole community (Ruawai North) access health services in Whangarei 2. Helping rural people access health services in Dargaville. For bookings phone Te Ha Oranga 439 3013.
What this means is: The Health Shuttle will no longer be collecting people within the Dargaville Township and taking them to appointments in Dargaville.
So if you live within the Dargaville Township area i.e. inside the 100km/hour speed limits, Ritches Town Service can help you, they have reduced their fares to $10 return trip, on their scheduled timetable route. YES they are able to collect you from your home if you ring 439 6306 and make a booking, it would be helpful to align your appointments within their scheduled bus route. Working together we hope to be able to meet the transport needs of our community.

Kaipara born and bred ‘Oh, I thought you worked at Polwarth’s?’ is a common mistake people make when meeting the Kaipara District Council’s new corporate services support manager, Brenda Polwart. Her response is typical, “No, I’m the much younger, prettier more intelligent sister that works at the council!” Brenda has worked at council for three and a half years, working in customer services and then policy and planning. Recent restructuring has seen her promoted to management and she is now in charge of the customer service teams for Dargaville, Kaiwaka and the Dargaville Town Library. “It’s about excellence in customer service and building up the levels Brenda Polwart — KDC of service that we provide,” says corporate services support manager Brenda. “We have a philosophy here and that’s that we want to be the best little council in New Zealand and that’s what we’re working towards. The council is a fantastic place to work, the people are great and we really want to build a reputation that we are awesome. Brenda brings a great deal of experience to her new role, having worked in customer service for twenty years. “I’ve managed call centres and an office in Mt Maunganui and Tauranga and I was the personal sales manager in New Lynn for State Insurance. Brenda is the mother of three children aged 17, 12 and 6, and is studying business psychology part-time through Massey University. She says she was keen to come home to Dargaville and return to the relaxed lifestyle here. The talented thespian and singer has performed at Dargaville Little Theatre and plans to be involved in many future productions. “I’m pretty much born and bred Kaipara — I went to Ararua Primary School, where I learnt to play tennis and played for Northland Tennis right up until I left Dargaville High School. I wanted to come home — I’m surrounded by family and friends and I’m looking forward to making our council the best little council.” C

Dargaville hosts waka ama regatta Golfing in her blood by Joanne Speechly The local Waka Ama Club held a regatta on Saturday, 17 September, and Chairperson Archie McCahon, says it was a fantastic day and well attended. “Representation from within Taitokerau Waka Ama community — Opononi, Pahi, Te Tii, Mitamitaga, Parihaka, and of course, our own Hikuwai Kaipara — was huge. What a great day thanks to everyone who participated and the spectators.
“The highlights, from a day of many highlights, included that the third place team was all over sixty! Also, Parihaka took an extra turn in the 10-kilometre race to accompany our Hikuwai Kaipara team on the final leg.” A women’s, junior’s and pick and mix race also took place on Saturday, with the three teams completing a 2.5-kilometre circuit. The Te Tii junior men’s team, looking very strong, came in with 14m 26s, followed by Hokianga Solid’s 14m 40s and Hikuwai’s 16m 37s.
“The river was showing itself off on Saturday and the combination of wind, tide and current provided visitors and locals with a thrilling test. We decided to run a 10-kilometre mixed race and, using buoys placed out by the Northern Wairoa Boating Club, we marked out a fivekilometre course, heading to the old dairy company and up to the bridge.
“All winning team members took home a bag of kumara, which was generously supplied by Dwayne Blitvic,” adds Archie. “Clearly though, we have challenges ahead and Hikuwai Kaipara really needs to get an over sixty and a junior men’s team!”
“It was an awesome sight to see seven Waka lined up at the start and after a lot of hard work and nearly an hour of battle, the winner crossed the line.
He wishes to thank everyone involved, especially the Northern Wairoa Boating Club, the Te Kopuru Fire Brigade and local Maori Wardens.

Time to get serious about study Our senior students have recently sat their end of year mock exams. I now expect that they will start their study for end of year external exams in earnest. Parents can assist their child’s study programme by helping them manage study efficiently. Spending long periods of time in unbroken study is not an effective use of study time. The other part of designing an effective programme is the timing of follow up revision for each block of learning. A while ago I attended a learning workshop with Karen Boyes where we were reminded of the need for deep focus, which most people have difficulty maintaining for more than forty minutes at a time. When studying for extended periods of time a five minute break every twenty minutes is recommended. This break is to refresh and absorb the new knowledge. However it is important to return after five minutes or valuable revision time can be lost. Every third break (i.e. after an hour of study) should involve some time outside with exercise and fresh air. To maintain deep focus it is helpful if students can have a regular place of study, free from distraction. Some music is OK, but not radio or heavy beats which can interrupt the learning. With regards to retention, it has been
shown most people remember 90% of what happened within 24 hours but only 30% of what happened three days ago. It is therefore important to have regular revision, particularly for externals being examined at the end of the year. The most important revision time after a new concept has been learned is the very next day, but this needs to be further reinforced at regular intervals.
A Whole Brain Parent As part of nurturing our children to become whole and well-rounded personalities, we want to see them develop their natural gifts and talents. Sometimes, adults can pigeon-hole children into either/or when it comes to their abilities. We may view creativity and Science as completely different spheres. However, in Leonardo da Vinci’s day it wouldn’t have seemed unusual that he studied and excelled in Mathematics, Art, and Music all at the same time. Opportunities to view, explore and create Music and Art are so good for our children, because they draw these two worlds together, strengthening the capacity for connections between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This is how we nurture great thinkers and problem-solvers.

Dargaville High School student, Jodi Macallister, has golfing achievements in her past and in her future, with her father and her great-grandmother both enjoying and excelling at the sport. Starting out as a caddy for her dad, Jodi soon decided to give golf a go, and with the support and encouragement of her family she has gone from strength to strength, winning second division at the recent Junior Maori National golf tourney in Te Awamutu on a course she rates as her all time favourite. Jodi Macallister — a rising star She’s also been picked to compete in Invercargill on the 11th of October in the Eagles tournament, and has just come back from the NZ Amateurs, where she placed 15th out of 40. At the age of 14 Jodi has been playing for three years, since age 11, and has already achieved many things which golfers strive to master through their entire careers — including an incredible 115-metre hole in one. She puts her phenomenal success down to regular practise and determination, as well as regular Sunday games with her father and coaching from local golfing legend, Quenton Diment. This winning attitude has seen her shoot a personal best 79 in recent weeks, and there’s no doubt that this talented Dargaville local will soon be living the dream as a professional golfer, competing at such famous courses as Augusta, Pebble Beach and the ‘home of golf’, St Andrew’s in Scotland — names which her classmates have likely only seen in computer games!

well-attended meeting of the Dargaville Chamber of Commerce convened by the president F. A. Jones, was held last night to discuss the question of the site of the proposed new Post Office at Dargaville. Mr. Dall, chief inspector of Post Offices, considered the section at the corner of Hokianga Road and Normanby Street to be the most suitable for the erection of a new office. A good foundation could be secured there for a brick and concrete building and that it possessed superior qualities for the working of the telegraphic instruments.

Northern Wairoa’s got talent Every year, the Northern Wairoa Principals Association and Dargaville Rotary present the Junior Speech Contest and once again it proved that the Northern Wairoa is home to some very talented young speakers. Thirteen articulate speakers, from eleven schools, spoke on a variety of topics in the tough competition. First place went to eleven-year-old Stacee Lloyd from Te Kopuru School, who gave a reasoned argument about the contentious issue of smoking.

Mr Teddy is coming
In anticipation of their upcoming children’s show, Finding Mr Teddy, Dargaville Little Theatre has held a poster competition to promote the show. Pictured are the two runner ups, seven-year-old Sky Flight, and five-year-old Bryn Mason.
Ruawai Primary School’s Edmund Fordyce came in a close second with his humorous case for teachers should have a sense of humour. Third place went to Will Green from Dargaville Primary School, who eloquently demonstrated his knowledge of the tuatara.
“As usual, the standard was very high,” said Rotary’s Neil Clements. “Those at the top were maybe a little better than the others but it was a very, very close contest. “The students have already won school speech competitions at their own school and this is an opportunity for the winners to face off against each other and represent their schools. “It was certainly worth going to and everyone — parents, teachers, even people with no association to schools — said how much they enjoyed it and it’s so entertaining. The judges were Becky Matich, Lester Appleton and Rose Stirling. Ken Cashin videoed the evening and Jo’s Home Cookery once again sponsored the event.

The two Dargaville Primary School pupils have won tickets to this weekend’s show. There will be four shows at 11am and 1pm on both Saturday, October 1, and Sunday, October 2. All tickets are door sales and $2.00 per person.

8 SEPTEMBER 28 - 2011 Men who made Northern Wairoa . . .
J. Alex McLean
by Brian Eastwood
Whatever the real reason for a former Dargaville mayor being called ‘Caesar’, the explanation has now been lost in the mists of time. But later that nickname for J. Alex McLean became an affectionate one for a man who was said to be one of the town’s most go ahead mayors. Look into the early stories of Northern Wairoa and the name McLean features often. When Dargaville Borough celebrated its halfcentury in 1958, McLean wrote a history for the Golden Anniversary booklet and told how he had travelled by train from Auckland to board the river steamer ‘Minnie Casey’ at Helensville and set sail for Dargaville. It was 1878, he was three years of age and he lived here for the rest of his life. Joseph Dargaville had bought the land just four years previously from Te Awha Parore and others. There were no roads but two hotels, Northern Wairoa and Kaihu Hotel, later renamed Central, were up and running. McLean always remembered how basic things were. His father started a bakery business, his shop about where Jack Fannon Ltd trades today in Victoria Street and they lived on the premises for forty years. McLean senior was public minded enough to become a member of the first Dargaville Town Board. His son J. Alex (Caesar) started work as a printing apprentice in the newspaper office of the Wairoa Bell, eventually taking over the family bakery business from his father. By the time he had turned forty he had retired from those long working hours to
become a Land, Insurance and Commission Agent in a little stationery and book shop alongside Dargaville Club. Perhaps marriage to the daughter of the first Mayor, F. F. Day, pointed him towards community service and public life. When the Chamber of Commerce held the inaugural meeting in 1906 he was there. Four years later McLean represented the Borough on the J. Alex McLean Marsden Kaipara Hospital Board that was soon to become Kaipara Hospital Board. Elected to the Borough Council he went on to become mayor in 1914. Over the next few years great progress was made. In his term the municipal Water Works brought tap water to town and allowed a swimming pool to be opened. A gas works was planned during his five years in the top job. In 1917 Mayor McLean was elected chairman of a newly organised Dargaville Fire Board. His progressive ideas led him to help bring electricity to Northern Wairoa. When a committee was formed to organise Hobson Electric Power Board he was an enthusiastic member. It fell through but in 1930 the North Auckland Electric Power Board came into being with McLean as first chairman, serving for thirteen years. In 1938 he was a charter member of Dargaville Rotary Club. An expert gardener he wrote a gardening column for North Auckland Times in his retirement. Probably there are some older town residents who can remember the tall, jovial, larger than life Caesar and his big glass greenhouse in front of his villa that once stood around 100 Hokianga Road. Learn something of his untiring work for his hometown and it becomes a little clearer just Alistair Nauman Registered Financial why he earned the nickname Caesar. Adviser

A group of talented students from Te Kopuru School have taken part in a mass ukulele rehearsal ahead of a concert in Auckland. The New Zealand Ukulele orchestra, the Kiwileles, is made up of students from more than 150 schools from around the country and they will perform a massive ukulele concert at Waitakere Events Centre on November 26. “We were lucky enough to have a prepractise at the Cloud on Queens Wharf in Auckland,” said music teacher, Matua Pere. “There were 1,100 children taking part.” The students have a repertoire of 18 items and the rehearsal included Maori, Samoan, Nuiean and Tongan songs as well as pop songs by the Finn Brothers, Tiki Tane and Dave Baxter. “It was a very good day and the students are benefitting from learning a musical instrument and interacting with peers of a similar age from across the country,” said Matua.

THE ONLY SOLUTION FOR LEAKY WINDOWS!
Leaky buildings — the very words conjure up an image of broken dreams and ruined homes. The crisis which has shaken New Zealand’s building industry to the core has already cost more in simple monetary terms than the devastating Christchurch earthquakes. A major part of this problem involves ‘weather tightness’ — the ability of a home to repel water and moisture, and the number one spot for moisture to enter the vulnerable timbers of a home is around aluminium windows and doors. These areas account for about half of all leaks according to Department of Building and Housing research, but thankfully now a These before and after shots show how the Flashman solution exists to correct the problem and eliminate system can transform a ‘leaky home’ to a weather-tight modern dwelling costly leaks. At your local Plumbing and Heating centre you’ll find a wide range of colours and styles to choose from, as well as expert advice from people who have been in the business of creating beautiful tiled interiors for many years. Local innovation increases yield and cures compaction by the Kaipara Lifestyler farming correspondent Compaction is a major issue in pasture management — caused by the weight of stock and machinery bearing down on the soil, it can lead to the development of a ‘hardpan’ layer stopping the natural flow of nutrients, air and water and ultimately undermining your soil’s ability to support growth. Needless to say, this impacts heavily on your bottom line, and with modern agribusiness practise meaning that farming is ever more intensive, the industry was in dire need of a simple solution to this problem. Enter the Groundhog — a local Kiwi innovation built tough in Dargaville and supplied exclusively by Compass Equipment. While this innovative piece of machinery is able to tackle the compaction issue head on, there are numerous other benefits to be had as well from the aeration and deep soil shattering properties of its smart tine system. While standard ‘ripper’ type aerators work from the bottom up, the Groundhog works from the top down, with a series of angled rotating tines which are built for hard work and will last ten times longer than conventional welded tines. The motion of the Groundhog, towed behind a tractor, creates shatter lines deep into the soil up to three times deeper than the tines
themselves, preserving the structure of the soil and opening up the soil to receive vital air and nutrients. This top down approach also works against hardpan re-forming. The Groundhog promotes healthier pastures through better nutrient movement, and can add value to any fertilising work and spreading undertaken, promoting vigorous root growth, better dry-weather tolerance and less nutrient leaching. The range of models available at Compass includes attachments to work with a harrow, seed box and even a trailing roller for all types of farms, paddocks, vineyards and even sports grounds! Not content with just providing their customer with the opportunity to view this unique innovation, the team at Compass Equipment, are also prepared to show you just how much the Groundhog can revolutionise your pasture management this Spring. Give them a call and they will bring their dedicated demonstration model to your place for a comprehensive demonstration and test free of charge — you are guaranteed to be amazed by what this Kiwi-built, world-leading device can achieve.

Clash of the codes as RWC and grand final face off by Our Sports Correspondent It’s a television programmer’s nightmare and a sports fan’s dream — two of the biggest games in the world going head to head on TV screens across the country in a veritable clash of the codes. And while it’s fair to say that the nation will be in full ‘blackout’ mode to support our rugby heroes, the real question will be which code to watch when the All Blacks face Canada and the Warriors take on Manly — on the same day! It’s a perfect storm in many respects, with our only NFL team battling to the top of their code for only their second crack at grand final glory. Meanwhile the A.Bs have powered through old nemesis France in a thrilling 37-17 victory which was set up by a blistering quarter hour in the first half and cemented by gutsy defensive play to hold the French offensive back as the game went on. Both sides are a mixture of seasoned veterans and young superstars — and both have their eyes set on the prize at the top of their respective codes. The strange part of this story is that both have had their hopes destroyed in the past by the same insignia — the French rooster hammering the All Blacks in a previous (and best unmentioned!) quarter final and the Warriors falling to the Roosters in the 2002 grand final of the NFL.

And while all eyes will be on both our Union and League heroes to champion the pride of New Zealand on the 2nd (when the ABs meet Canada at 5.30pm and the League kicks off thankfully a little later!), there’s plenty of rugby action in the last round of pools play to keep fans happy all week. Canada face Japan on the 27th at 5pm in a match which will show the Canadian’s form before they meet New Zealand on Sunday. On the following day Georgia kick off against Romania in a battle of the East European rugby powers, with South Africa taking on Samoa on the 30th. France will attempt to redeem their pride on the 1st with a match against Tonga at 6pm — expect a physical and exciting game as the Tongan supporters come out in force to cheer on their home team. Later in the day northern powerhouses England and Scotland will fight out a hotly contested battle on the pitch, in keeping with their long history of sporting rivalry — watch out for the methodical English side’s tactics, as they are definite finals contenders, but don’t write off the ‘men in kilts’ either — they are a team with solid skills and a lot of heart. At the same time Australia meet Russia in another closely observed fixture — our trans Tasman neighbours will be under scrutiny coming up to the knockout stages. On the 2nd, you can consider Ireland v Italy and Wales v Fiji as curtain raisers to the main event — a double billing of rugby so singularly unique it’s like a gift from sporting Valhalla! Whatever your code, there will be thrills, hard knocks and unstoppable action enough to satisfy the most ardent fan.
